Good morning Judith Collins,

I have written to my MP for East Coast Bays, Erica Stanford, and indicated that she should vote for you as the leader of the national party.

There is a media swell bent on not providing you any support or positive coverage but be assured that there are many in my circle who want you to be the leader of National for no other reason than having bigger balls than any of the other candidates.

In the event of your bid not being successful, I would like you to become an independent in Parliament before the odious dwarfs waka jumping bill is passed into legislation.

In 2020, or before with any sort of luck, you will stand in Papakura and be reelected as an independent MP as the people of Papakura have more sense than the sheeple of Epsom and will not need to be instructed on how to vote for a wimp.

Your independent stand will be supported by a massive party vote from like-minded thinking New Zealanders such as myself who despair as the creep of socialism makes its way through New Zealand society.

Touchy feely inclusiveness my arse, time to take the machete to the gangreen and associated creeping rot.

Become that support party to National JC, New Zealand needs to rediscover that it has a backbone formed from our pioneering forefathers, the one being surgically removed one vertebrae at a time by idiots on the left with their snouts in a trough on the best remuneration package of their lives.

If the opposition were paid by what they bring to the table, they would starve to death in a week.

    Adams is highly competent. I thought maybe she was PM material, but it would appear not yet anyway.
    
    These days, when everything is on video 24/7, there’s a lot more to being PM than just being competent. In fact you could argue that the positions that require competence are the key ministerial posts and the PM is more of a figure head.
    
    Bill, for instance, was superb as MinFin. He was the actual firm hand on the tiller through the GFC etc. However that was not really enough for PM.

      @cmm… Some folk operate best in a role out of the limelight. Adams might be good in her roles but as leader? No.
      3rd person Bridges ranks lower to me. Goodness knows how he performed as a court lawyer.
      Joyce is too much allied with the election loss. Like it or not. I’m sure he is competent in the finance role but as leader? No.
      That leaves Judith Collins who has (been) kept out of public view for months pre election. She is fired up to go gettam.

        Perhaps, but very few people know that. Only a few politcs wonks know who these sorts of things.
        
        What is far more important is how the leader comes across to Joe Punter. Is it a person they can relate to and inspire them to waddle over the the voting booth for?
        
        I can’t see that for Joyce. I also struggle to see that for Adams at the moment either.

      To the best of my knowledge Cindy isn’t running for the National Party Leadership, although given her vacuous mutterings perhaps she isn’t certain of this? I think that one of her “conversations” may well be needed? I regard Amy Adams as the worst possible National selection…she is possibly quite bright but I question whether she has the nous to be reflective and pensive.

  Second that directive. She beats the hell out of whoever is running. Hope the other 55 National MPs realise that Judith is their one big chance to right the sneaky back door attack on their Party by the wee judas Dictator called Peters.
  She will also make sure that the counterfeit selected PM called “Commie Chic” Comrade Ardern will not be able to hide behind the pest Peters in Parliaments debating chamber ,and just for once answer the political questions that Judith Collins will phrase in an appropiate way.
  Up to now wee judas Peters whispers the answers,and she also gets support from the clown Mallard,long past his use by date,as a Speaker who dosnt seem to know that NZ is still a democracy.

  @PG… I also emailed our local MP, Todd McClay supporting Judith Collins.
  The other candidates are just that, ‘others’ with no redeeming skills at this point in the game. NZer’s need someone with some ‘go gettam’.
  We can only hope that commonsense prevails over the other mindsets.

        JC didn’t get the message last time and according to the following it may be the same message again. Kind of shows how out of touch some folks here are because it appears JC is not even in the race and never was – hence her objections of Amy Adams being shown with supporters and calling it out as Adams having broken the rules – something she made up, maybe on the way to the airport. I had doubts about Simon Bridges but if his colleagues support him, and the middle, good luck to him – I think he has an edge on Amy Adams personality wise:

  Labour and media would be laughing their heads off if Judith failed to win the leadership and turned Independent. Her chances of winning Papakura in 2020 would be slim, even if National declines to put up a candidate. Accommodating Peter Dunne in Ohariu was damaging for National even though many National supporters there were ‘understanding and accommodating’.
  Judith has a track record of being supportive and still having fun while on the ‘outer’. If she was not happy to remain in Parliament if she failed to gain the leadership, she would be spoiled for opportunities in a life after Parliament.
  I am sure National MP’s tomorrow will:
  1. elect who they consider to be the best person for leader – particularly the one best suited to win the next election.
  2. put their weight right behind the new leader.
  
  I would expect in return the new leader would assemble the most effective team when allocating ‘jobs’ and not show favouritism and cronyism.

Not enough builders, not enough houses, not enough affordability.

  No surprises there then. Over the next 2.75 years, he will be on of a number of cabinet ministers who will be a big failure. Most especially when one looks at their promises and rhetoric at the 2017 election versus actual delivery.

    The list is growing longer by the day:
    
    Twitford, who has discovered that affordable houses simply cannot be pulled out of thin air, having trouble finding experienced construction workers while at the same time the Immigration Department is deporting up to 200 illegal Malaysian construction workers taking jobs from kiwi’s and paying no tax!
    
    Jones, whose nephews have gone in to hiding, absolutely petrified at the amount of trees they will have to plant, assuming of course, that land can be found to plant them in to. Perhaps those Malaysian construction workers can reapply as arborists?
    
    Hipkins, who blunders on under the misconception that the education department is managed for the benefit of the Teaching Unions as opposed to, oh, I dunno, THE STUDENTS! Never mind that senior university officials are pointing out that the free first year policy of only funding the first year of study means that those who need it most get the least benefit. Meanwhile our most marginal students rescued by charter schools are pawns to be managed to the benefit of teachers who cannot abide being held to account for anything that resembles a standard!
    
    Kelvin Davis, the invisible deputy leader, who magically appears when the Charter schools he likes needs a fairy godfather, and then disappears in a flash of incompetence!
    
    Ron Mark, who cannot even wear his medals properly!
    
    Andrew Little, who wants to reduce the prison population, yet seems unconcerned that some of the offenders released under his watch might offend again, calling them adverse outcomes or somesuch, not realising that those incarcerated are rarely there for a first offence!

  It all starts with land.
  Without land you cant build houses.
  Labour cannot address the land shortage without the Greens support and the Greens will not accept and support anything that will remove the rights for NIMBYs to block land development.
  
  If today you had a huge pile of money (say $100 mil) and you went out and purchased 1,000 Ha of well located (rural zoned) farms, with a team of highly skilled and motivated experts you MIGHT get some rezoned, roaded, serviced, subdivided and ready to be built on in 3 years under current RMA regime.
  
  Heaps of problems tho. Everyone is soooooo busy. Its almost impossible to get consultants to concentrate on a job as they has clients screaming at them from every angle. Likewise roading/civil/drainage contractors are turning work away. the only way to get someone to prioritize your job is to pay OTT.

    A. Adams is no doubt a clever person and knowledgeable in her areas of competence, but there is very little warmth there.
    Usually, if you hear a politician give a speech at a meeting for example, and you get to speak to them afterwards, they relax the facade a bit and communicate normally. Not Ms Adams though. She carries on as though still addressing the meeting.
    A large part of Ms Ardern’s mass appeals is not so much what she says, but how she says it. Sad but true.

  Just watched it on TV3 replay. Twatford lied about the income required to service the loans – he said $60k and the official advice $114k. He’s lied about the number of homes to be built – he’s claiming 18000 over the next two years but no way will that happen. At least Lisa Owen extracted a statement from him (albeit very reluctant) that he will resign if he doesn’t deliver.
  
  No doubt his spin team are rapidly preparing for tonights follow up on TV3 News. I can’t wait for QT tomorrow but given senior Labour Cabinet Ministers’ propensity not to be present when they know that they are to be asked an awkward question it will be an Associate who answers ‘on behalf of’ tomorrow.
  
  The chickens are really coming home to roost on Labour’s outrageous housing promises.

      Powell’s speech was made in 1968.
      How different a place Europe would be if the powers that be had done something then, in Britain the US and elsewhere. Instead they allowed the tide to flow on , now it is too late.

        Powell’s speech, unfortunately, was about race. That isn’t the problem to most Europeans. The problem is a certain ideology that does not respect secularism, human rights, equal rights for homosexuals and women, equal rights for ‘infidels’.

        In the UK as recently as 2004 Sir Andrew Green (former UK ambassador to Saudi Arabia), head of Migration Watch was advising against allowing unchallenged access to the UK when eastern EU countries were going to be allowed unrestricted access to western EU countries. Meanwhile, the UK Home Office Immigration department were saying Green was wrong & there was no need to worry
        Blair followed Home Office advise, despite the obviously poor advise that there would be no mass migration from East Europe.
        Guess what?, the bureaucrats were wrong, & Green was right l, there was a surge in migration from East Europe. Result UK public infrastructure, housing & jobs market were put under strain from the unchallenged mass migration.
        
        It is always amazing how the left like to “forget” inconvenient recent historical failures in policy.

        CL, not quite, Powell’s speech was about mass immigration & with it the pressures that mass migration would bring.
        It was painted as white v black, because the UK had policies of uncontrolled immigration from the West Indies (in particular) & Asia. This was putting pressure on jobs & housing in a country still rebuilding itself after WWII. If you read the speech, it was not explicitly racist (& did not single out racial groups), it just went against the group think of the time, to the extent Powell was expelled from the Tories.

        If I remember this correctly, it was a statement about overblown criticisms of the new employment law changes. The public transport strikes happened before any changes were made, and so, in effect, would have happened regardless. I won’t say you’re being “casual with the truth” as its more likely you don’t remember the circumstances surrounding it.

        The public transport strike happened before the law changes, and in all likelihood could have happened afterwards without being a product of said changes.
        
        Heck, if National had formed The Government, the strikes would still have happened.
        
        I don’t think anyone seriously believes that quote to mean “I promise there will be no strikes ever again in the history of NZ” – unless of course, you extract just that one little sentence and ignore all the sentences that came before and after it.

  There was recently a story regarding the census, and it’s historical data received in Moerewa. Apparently data collected there was pretty light, and this has affected health and other government money going into that region.
  
  So I asked a Maori mate of mine about the meaning of “Moerewa,” and he gave me a number of possible translations.
  
  “Moe” apparently means dream, dreaming or sleep up high – and
  “rewa” means sleeping, or floating like a bird asleep
  
  So perhaps the good citizens of Moerewa are dreaming, sleeping and floating up high, and have forgotten to complete their census details in the past.

National need a leader with presence, stature and diction. National need a leader who is concise, not prone to waffle, gets to the point, and most importantly, puts the fear of God into the government.

That leader needs to be backed by someone strong on policy, well versed in the mechanations of parliament, and competent.

I would like to see Collins as leader, and Joyce as deputy, with Bridges as chief whip. Amy Adams should be the spokesperson for social issues.

New Governments are not voted in, old governments are voted out.

The New Zealand Herald reports that there are 11000 overstayers in New Zealand at the moment. At the average people per household per the most recent census, that’s 4000 homes. Probably, it wouldn’t be quite that many homes but surely the fastest way to make more affordable homes available and/or reduce over-crowding is to get overstayers back where they belong?

Well it is for fat cat MPs etc.
But for average working kiwis with a family to bring up, I would have thought it was more like $400,000.

What was that formula? Mortgage payments should be no more than 25% of your income to be able to have a reasonable life and pay all of your other bills etc.

A few of us Septuagenarians were having a beer with wives after Bowls at the weekend and the subject of Russel McVeigh arose as two of our number were retired Lawyers from major firms.
We considered that the employment policies of these major firms must need to be reviewed in view of the current scandal coming to light.
One aspect must be that now that there that some though must be given by the Partners, not the HR Departments, as to whether there are jobs for all of these budding lawyers as more and more young ladies doing law at University and are now and will continue well into the majority. These young ladies are very clever, smart, can do anything and very sassy to go for what they want.
Accountants can find work more easily.
But these young often really naive young women, are climbing over themselves, as reported by mature senior partners, and anybody else, for the few jobs after graduation, often without family connections via the Internship system in the hope that they will be offered jobs on graduation.
Is this the best way to get new employees as the industry is really chocka with young law graduates, and many more annually ?
Russell McVeigh have been found out, and will lose a lot of business, thereby expected in a while to hold or reduce staff. We heard that this intention of getting a job has been getting more and more competitive by these young very smart women, often it is said that with the guise of the HR Department who of course favour more women.
Surely the Universities should look at the Law degree courses where the possibility of getting a job with a Law firm are diminishing rapidly.
So often families get priority in a small market.
We are seeing the start of a problem calling it Internships into question.
Other Law firms may reconsider Internships if HR and PC do not stop them.

  At one stage, some years back now, both the Law Society and the Accountancy equivalent tried to dictate the number of graduates to the universities, but there was hell to pay, particularly when a high percentage of graduates weren’t entering the profession. Nowadays it is market forces; give them all a degree and let them sort it out amongst themselves.

I note that the PM was wearing THOSE sweaty little ankle boots AGAIN during an interview on the 60 Minutes programme. The PM obviously does not understand that wearing ankle boots during summertime is not ‘de rigueur’ and all it does is show her ignorance in such matters. She also wore those said boots with that dreadful outfit at the NZer of the Year Awards As an aside, the interview was bloody awful and it leaves me wondering why she and the BF agree to appear on these programmes. The interviewer was an idiot and did nothing to enhance the profile of the PM and the BF. If the PM doesn’t want the focus to be on her pregnancy, then she should stop giving interviews to the media and get on with the bloody job of being the PM. You’ve got lots of things to get cracking such as building all those houses – “a house for everyone” was what you promised and, so far, not even one started! So less posing for the cameras from now on and a decent days’ work in earnest is what is required. This Govt is a train wreck before it even got started….

Is Ross Taylor New Zealand’s best ever batsman? He scored his 18th ODI century last night, to go with his 17 test centuries. He’s now in second place to Stephen Fleming for most runs in all formats of the game, and with eight innings to go this home season, he could well make the 600-odd runs to take him to the top of the list.

Taylor’s knock last night was superb. He took his time getting started on a difficult pitch, but once he was in, never really looked like getting out until Rashid deceived him. He and Tom Latham steadied this ship from 27 for three, when New Zealand looked headed to an almost inevitable defeat.

Ross Taylor is also a class bloke. He has recovered from being stripped of the captaincy a few years ago by letting his bat do the talking, and although he turns 34 in a week or so, he is in the form of his life. There’s no reason why he couldn’t keep on playing for at least another three years or more.

    There was no problem with his vision Poppa. He had a pterygium on the surface of his eye removed which could have led to problems further down the track has he not had it dealt with. I had the same operation about 20 years ago, and the major problem was increased light sensitivity, not ideal for a cricketer spending days out in the blazing sun!

  Taylor is a great batsman (certainly one of New Zealand’s finest ever) but I wouldn’t put him in the same class as MD Crowe.
  At his peak Crowe was the best batsman in World Cricket- Yep I know you are going to throw averages at me but could you imagine what Crowe would average in today’s batsman-oriented game? (Rule changes, Kiddie sized boundaries, ‘Superbats’ etc etc)
  Also- Sadly we tend to play most of our cricket these days against the ‘Second Tier’…

      Yes. The issue last night was that in the latter part of both innings, with the ball getting soft, it took time for a batsman to play himself in. De Grandhomme is an excellent striker of the ball, gives everything in the field, and is a good containing bowler. It’s not that long ago that he won an ODI for New Zealand against Pakistan with 74 off 40 balls when the team seemed headed for defeat.

  Taylor is an all-time NZ great and I’d have him in my all-time great NZ middle order ahead of Fleming, or Andrew Jones, and probably Martin Donnelly. But by the time he retires, I think Kane Williamson will be better – he should have over 30 test tons, another 20 in limited overs cricket, 10,000 test runs and an average of well over the “international great” mark of 50. No great predictive skills required for that one! 😉
  
  But batting averages today are a bit soft. I reckon you can add about another 5 to 10 runs due to pitch conditions and the prevalence of great fast bowlers compared to back in the 1970s and 1980s. Yes, Hogan was a great, but best of all IMHO, was, even with his self-imposed exile, Glenn Turner.

And 1,000 runs before the end of May in 1973 (other than a certain Donald Bradman, the only touring batsman to do accomplish that feat) And the small matter of 100 first class centuries when it was a tough grind against world class players on the English county circuit from 1968-82.
  
  Plus he is technically the best, and is a fascinating guy to listen to when discussing technique and tactics. What he did with innovative hitting and switching his stance in the 1982-83 limited overs competition against Austral and England was years ahead of its time. Plus he was the guy who taught Richard Hadlee something new, by getting him to bowl in the nets with a rubbish bin to simulate the umpire, so he could get as close as possible to the stumps when bowling in Australia in 1985-86. Hence the likes of the Aussie left handers, Kepler Wessels, Allan Border, Wayne Phillips and Greg Matthews (6 times out of 6!) figured highly in Hadlee’s stunning tally of 33 for that series.

    Agree 100% about modern batting averages- I saw Benaud and Lawry discussing this a few years ago and they reckoned the modern averages were hugely inflated and a little misleading.. (I wouldn’t argue anything Benaud said about cricket)
    
    As great as Turner was (Though his ‘Century of Centuries’ book has to be the most boring thing ever written) Crowe was for my money our greatest ever batsman. At his best his strokemaking and shot selection was second to none..

      I liked “Century of centuries” for the technical discussions, but yes, it is one for the train spotters in that it details each and every innings. An old county pro trying to milk a bit more out of their benefit! 😉
      
      His best book was “Opening Up”, published after his first stint as NZ coach in 1987, and also covering his career in a less systematic way than his 1974 mid-career “My Way”. Was fascinating, and I learned a lot about sport, and life for that matter too. Must have been my age at the time (late teens), but it was fascinating to see someone reject an “inspired moments” approach to life, work and sport, and instead be almost entirely systematic and devoid of emotion. I learned a lot that suited my temperament, or at least countered some of the youthful unrestrained negative aspects in my life. But then Turner was never popular with that approach in NZ teams, either as a player, captain, or his two stints as NZ coach. Particularly in the eyes of one M.D. Crowe. Whom, incidentally, Turner rated and enjoyed coaching because he recognised world class talent when he saw it, but considered Hogan psychologically soft (with good reason in Crowe’s early career), and too easily distracted by emotion and the need for attention.
      
      I also thought Turner’s all-time great team he played against was fascinating – Barry Richards, Sunil Gavaskar, Greg Chappell, Colin Cowdrey, Tom Graveney, Mike Proctor, Alan Knott, Richard Hadlee, Dennis Lillee, Derek Underwood or (on a non-rain affected pitch) Bishen Singh Bedi and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar. So no place for Gary Sobers (who was past his best when Turner played against him in 1969 and 1972), Geoff Boycott, Doug Walters (who famously never scored runs in England), Viv Richards (considered he batted too low and was too legside to be considered a complete player), Ian Botham, or Imran Khan (whom Turner tried to dissuade from trying to become an allrounder during their time together at Worcestershire – but to be fair, Imran was still bowling military-medium pies before he got it together one day at the MCG in 1976-77). And of his own admission, it was Turner’s English county bias and respect for their aesthetic abilities that saw him rate Cowdrey and his Worcester team mate, Graveney.
      
      Turner’s last book, “Lifting the Covers” was excellent detailing that, and also the shambles he had to deal with with Chris Cairns, Adam Parore and Chris Doig. But the subject matter was sad.

        Hmm. You wouldn’t rate Vettori as a certainty? Hard to think of another spinner, be it left arm orthodox, off spinner or leggie who would keep him out. Not even John Bracewell, or Hedley Howarth before they turned him into a stock bowler. And then there is Vettori’s batting.
        
        Hard to separate Chris Cairns and John R Reid for the no. 6 all rounders spot. But I’m almost prepared to call BJ Watling as our best ever keeper, better than Wadsworth, Smith, Parore and the young MacCullum, as a keeper-batsman, at any rate.

      But along with Graham Mourie, Chris Laidlaw and Joe Karam, I consider Glenn Turner one of the most fascinating people in NZ sport. Yes, some sports people can talk a good game about their career, and sport in general, or their life (you couldn’t shut Martin Crowe up about that subject! 😉 ) but it is the take on life that fascinates me most about those guys.

        As Hedley Howarth would often come to a practice or game straight from working at his dad’s fish factory, players used to joke the ball would soon smell of fish. 😉

        I first started being taken to the cricket at the Basin in the early 70s, at primary school age. Back then the players would sit on chairs on a grass ‘bank’ (sort of like movie directors chairs from memory and in the north-western corner) and us kids were free to play in amongst them/get autographs etc.
        
        One day I was obviously obstructing Hedley’s view of proceedings and he gave me a little nudge to alert me to this fact.
        
        I was mortified – and never transgressed in that way again.

        I agree Kimbo. In terms of his thought processes, Turner was ahead of his time. I recall during the tour to Australia in 1985-6, in preparation for the Gabba test, Turner put a rubbish bin where the umpire would stand as he coached Hadlee to get in closer to the stumps in his delivery stride. Hadlee took 15 wickets in the test match, and New Zealand had its first win on Australian soil, later taking the series 2-1.

        No, or at least not initially. He didn’t do well as a youngster on the awful 1976-77 tour to the Sub-Continent – was the days when they stayed in shoddy hotels, got sick, and were served water buffalo and/or chicken that looked suspiciously like the crows hanging around out the hotel! 😉
        
        But, no, as a county pro he was used to the “grind”. Where Howarth got into problems was his off-field life, including drinking and marriage issues. Mind you, so did a host of other players, including Gary Sobers. But then Howarth wasn’t as talented to get away with it over the long haul as Gary Sobers – not that anyone should be criticised for being a lesser than Sobers! 😉
        
        On the field, while leading the team at any rate, Howarth used to switch on and be in-the-zone. In that respect I rate him the best NZ skipper I ever saw, yes, better than Crowe at the 1992 World Cup, Fleming, and MacCullum. Bear in mind that there are two eras in NZ cricket – BH, and AH – before Howarth and After Howarth. Before him, we were hopeless. After him, we became genuinely competitive, obviously coinciding with Richard Hadlee becoming a world class player by the time we puiled off that huge upset against the Windies in 1979-80.
        
        But I don’t think his batting was ever good enough to rate as a great player, so instead he had to work harder and be more systematic. Instead, all his attention was poured into the mental energy of captaincy, including media. Bear in mind NZ Cricket was still an amateur organisation with a few pros (Howarth, Hadlee, Wright) working within it, but by the time Howarth was dropped they were paying good wages and it had become a lot more commercial. Howarth bore a lot of the brunt of that transition. And then his eye sight started to go, and with it his confidence, and they had to drop an established specialist opener like Bruce Edgar to keep him in the team. A pity he went out the way he did. But he still averaged 32.44

        I’m early 40s so only remember Geoff Howarth at the tail of his career when his eyesight was going and his batting was going down the gurgler.
        I remember my Dad telling me that Howarth had been one of the best batsmen around before he became Captain- But having read your summation it seems there was a bit more to it than that!
        
        Speaking of ‘off field’ behaviour- Did you ever read Ian Botham’s Autobiography?
        What a read! Botham, Rod Marsh and Allan Lamb certainly never let the fact they were playing a Test Match interfere with their drinking (and other things)

        Yes, I read Beefy’s biography – I assume you are referring to the one he did in the 1990s with an old drinking newspaper buddy and sometime rugby writer Chris (Crash) Lander – and an impressive antidote to the “they didn’t do that in my day” carping criticism of Don Mosey that came out about 1986.
        
        Was impressed that Botham seemed to have grown as a person from his younger days, and become more magnanimous and well-rounded in his judgements – and was refreshingly honest about some of his own mistakes and failings (his decline as a bowler, his dalliance with “Lord” Tim Hudson). He even picked Geoffrey Boycott in his all-time England XI! 😉
        
        About the closest equivalent player to Botham was Keith Miller. Didn’t give a stuff about his stats, just how he could win the game, right here and now! Is a refreshing attitude.

Anyone use POLI payments here? eg, Air NZ allows you to pay your airfares via POLI (irresponsible of them in my mind).

Don’t, apparently it is not endorsed by the banks and breaks the T&C’s of your account if you use it.

It is risky to use poli if you value your bank balance.

And I really need to read it two or three times to understand it, and what I have to do.

And those people who do not like census’s etc eg giving away information.

Hobson’s Pledge finds a cause. Winston Peters agrees, but the Greens’ Shaw says:

“We want to get rid of the discrimination that says that if you want to set up a Maori ward it requires a referendum but if you want to set up a general ward you don’t need a referendum – we believe that is discriminatory and you should remove the distinction.”

So something akin to political apartheid should be able to be set up without the rights of a general vote.

The Greens are well to the Left of Labour.

Way to go, Don Brash! Where does National stand on this?

  Of course only Maori ratepayers would be permitted to elect to be part of a Maori ward, and Maori wards would be allocated upon proportionality.
  
  So, for example, if there were 500,000 ratepayers in Auckland represented by 13 wards, then you would need to find about 38,000 ratepayers to have another (Maori) ward.
  
  Where do you think we can find that number of Maori ratepayers ?

  Plastic bags are a minor factor in the plastic problem, but others such as industrial packaging are a no go area. Timber, bricks, fibrolite, kitchen units etc are sheathed in miles of plastic. On the question of so called pollution I had one of those Maccas thick shakes on the weekend using a plastic straw. It took quite a while to finish the shake and I thought back to the days of paper straws when after the first 5 minutes the tube would squash up and make its use impossible.

Asia is confronting the dark side of migrant labour.

The South China Morning Post reports 500 people gathered in Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay to protest about human trafficking and pray for its victims.

The newspaper cited this case from Malaysia:

Lisao, a domestic worker in Penang, died on February 11 of multiple organ failure just a day after being rescued by a migrant workers’ protection group. She reportedly faced torture for more than a month and was forced to sleep outside with her employers’ dog.

The Jakarta Post has reported that Indonesian president Joko Widodo is receptive to the idea of halting the recruitment of Indonesian domestic workers for Malaysia.

NZ needs to be vigilant on employment of migrant labour.

        I admit that it’s got me beat Kimbo. A few years ago some Grand Poobar in the C 0f E came out as an atheist & I wondered then why he stuck around.
        
        I would, however, suggest that while otherwise rational people from time to time get converted to religion it is equally likely for those who have been indoctrinated from birth to believe in a Skydaddy to finally see the light.
        
        Imagine it! The best years of your life spent on your knees in front of something that doesn’t exist. I’d live it up…..not stick around listening to more of the crap. 🙂

        Yes, an interestingly fellow alright. Wasn’t raised in the church, but was attracted to it by the faith of a family he encountered in his youth. But Geering’s own spirituality was more an unoriginal existential “faith in my faith” /liberal politics.
        
        And for all the waffle about “a sense of transcendence” he got it by bludging off and undermining a spiritual tradition he ultimately thinks is mythical bunk. “Sophistry” is the word I’m looking for. If you are going to believe, believe. If you are going to deny, then deny. Either way, piss or get off the pot! ?

        Slightly tangential to the current topic Kimbo but do you think that some people are simply born with a “God hole”? By this I mean that they are predestined to believe in the first load of spiritual cobblers dumped on them.
        
        Because this would indicate that some would be blessed with the opposite…..that of a complete inability to imagine a higher being no matter how much they are told to shut their eyes & “believe”.

        Um, I can’t speak for the genetics of it, as I profess no expertise in that matter. But as with similar claims that some are born with “criminal” genes, while I’m willing to entertain the idea of propensity and/or predisposition, ultimately I’d reject any notion of materialistic deterministic inevitability that undermines human responsibility and choice.
        
        However, my Calvinism leads me to the presupposition, confirmed by my observation that humans are irredeemably religious/spiritual/sense making/transcendence seeking beings. Including you in your own way. You have a joy for life and seem to value family and friends, and a readiness to ponder the weighty issues of life. And even the modern materialist position is relatively sophisticated. Ultimately everyone is there own philosopher and theologian. “Created in the image of God” is the term that sums up the disposition.
        
        But coming to a specific faith, or rejecting one you are raised in? Can only speak from a Calvinist perspective on the Christian faith – it depends on human responsibility, volition and ability (all of which can be nurtured), undergirded by the initiative and grace of God.

      I’m not an expert in blow-up billy goats, but I have become a bit more informed about Billy-goat poo today.
      Have spent the day in a goat-infested reserve and didn’t recognize the crapper of a pile of poo. The chap I was with told me that it was an older Billy-goat’s poo (not little raisins… more the size of pig poo).
      Then he informed me he could age the goats from the size of their droppings.

    I have a close family member, a boy, 11, just started at intermediate this year. Clever, good heart, excells at maths and chess – but socially awkward, a bit of a loner, not a lot of eye contact etc etc.

      I have a personal account of having one of my children recommended for a programme for “exceptional” children.
      (This was over 20 years ago.) The programme was run as a 1 week course at some school in Kohimarama, Auckland during summer hols.
      
      I was pretty sceptical about the thing…It cost a few bob… but we took child up for the week (we were living in Wellington),
      and she loved it… following year she was recommended again, but we flagged it…
      
      With the exception of Music… Hubby & I could cover everything on offer (languages/classics/maths/sciences / media/computer stuff, etc …)
      
      I do have reservations about singling kids out as “gifted”, especially if too much emphasis is given to one ability only.
      I’ve seen a few kids who are not well-rounded in some subjects; I’ve seen kids who are intellectually arrogant and are pains; I’ve seen kids who aren’t prepared to put in the hard yards as they advance into more difficult work.
      But I also have seen at close quarters (friend’s child) parents who have managed their son’s exceptional ability in maths really well…. made sure he kept up his interests in sport, music, friends and social commitments.
      I’ve also taught a couple of clever but poor immigrant kids (Russian and Cambodian) who just took control of their own learning from an early age. They had no advantages, no one looking out for them, but just soaked up experiences and learning opportunities.
      
      I do not have experience with the agency you have linked to (but it might have morphed from an earlier entity).
      My advice (without knowing child, parents, teacher) is to encourage child to develop a wide field of interests, especially if he does start pursuing maths in depth. Don’t neglect sport, music and social activities with peer group.

‘Non-secret’ revealed by Cabinet paper formatting error

A formatting error in a Cabinet paper released by Open Government Minister Clare Curran has revealed a supposed secret that was not actually much of a secret.

Curran, who is also Minister for Communications and Broadcasting, released a Cabinet paper on Sunday on the establishment of a $1.4 million advisory group that could pave the way for a new Public Media Funding Commission.

Blacked out from the document was a statement that Curran was seeking a $38 million annual boost for public media in the next Budget, to be split between Radio NZ and NZ-on-Air.

But a formatting error meant the supposedly secret text could be read by copying and pasting the blacked-out paragraphs.

Curran had previously announced the intended $38m funding boost, and the fact it would be split between the two organisations.

She told Stuff in September that the bulk of the new money would go to RNZ to enable it to set up a new public service television channel.

A spokeswoman for Curran said the information on funding had been blacked out from the Cabinet paper because it related to the Budget process.

“It’s standard practise not to publicise Budget-related issues prior to the Budget being completed.

“The fact that the documents were able to be searched and reverse engineered was due to a technical issue with the redaction process,” she said.

The formatting error also revealed the identity of a proposed intended fifth member of the advisory group to advise on the possible creation of the Public Media Funding Commission, whose name was supposed to have been blanked out.

He is William Earl.

Curran said on Sunday – without naming him – that he had withdrawn from the role for reasons that were undisclosed.

Her spokesman said his name had been redacted from the Cabinet paper for privacy reasons.

Earl said he had not withdrawn, but had instead been offered the role and declined it.

The other four confirmed members of the advisory were named on Sunday as Tower chairman Michael Stiassny, former deputy State Services commissioner Sandi Beatie, former RNZ deputy chairman Josh Easby, and freelance television consultant Irene Gardiner.
