  At the moment she wants to support the crowd who pay her to lie in bed all day with a bottle of Gin, so I support the crowd who want her out of bed and working.
  
  Fortunately they only pay her enough to buy three or four bottles at a time, so she still gets her exercise once a week meandering down to the bottle-o for a refill !

  I have already stated if Bridges gets it they will have lost me. I will not vote for the princess so only Act have a chance at my vote but they will need to convince me to do so. It is more likely I will stay home or go fishing

A devastated father has revealed his ex-partner sent him taunting messages moments before murdering their daughter in a revenge for him moving out.

Paul Hogan, 24, moved out of his home with former partner Cody-Anne Jackson after their relationship of three years turned sour.

The father-of-one agreed to looking after their two-year-old daughter Macey at weekends and thought everything was fine as he dropped her off in Staffordshire in October 2016.

But within hours Jackson smothered their two-year-old with a pillow after bombarding M Hogan with threatening messages.

Did you notice that the reason it is so cold in the UK is because a stream of warm air has extraordinarily pushed up into the Arctic, driving temperatures there up to 40C above average, and pushing the cold Arctic air down to the UK? So perhaps your link isn’t evidence for your position on climate change.

    Air moving in is going to push other air out – regardless of temperature. Air moving out is going to suck other air in – regardless of temperature.
    
    What I object to is the very thin science here.
    
    We have man-made CO2 being blamed for a wide range of different outcomes with very tenuous causal linkage.
    
    What we’re seeing here is far more akin to religious reasoning: the universe exists and something must have made it so therefore god exists. But nothing made god; god was always here.
    
    On top of that much of the scientific-sounding reasoning backing some arguments is a bit dodgy.
    
    CO2 coming out of cows is bad, but the same CO2 coming out of whales or krill or herds of zebras is fine.
    
    CO2 is going to cause acidification which is going to kill off shellfish, yet shellfish – virtually indistinguishable from what we have now – existed in the Triassic period when CO2 levels were 5 times what they are now. Oh, plants and various animals flourished too!
    
    Now maybe CO2 really is a big problem and maybe mankind and population is to blame, but the science is sketchy to say the least!
    
    Science is increasingly so politicised and ideologically driven that it is no longer driven by the scientific method (if, indeed, it ever really was).

        I am saying that there has probably never been a time when science was mainly driven by the scientific method.
        
        And it certainly is not now.
        
        These days the major goal seems to be to secure prestige and funding and that has been quite common in the past too.
        
        The really easy and lazy way to get funding these days is to hook your research to climate change, gender politics or some such.
        
        Dissent is no longer welcomed as an opportunity to find out something different, but is shouted down.
        
        While this has become more powerful recently, it has always existed.
        
        Consider, for example, the rise of tectonic plate theory in the 1960s (it predates that, but 1960s was when it was a hot-button issues).
        
        The alternate theory was that there were no plates moving sideways but instead the earth’s crust would rise up and erosion would then bring it down again (let’s call that the in-situ theory).
        
        In the 1960s many scientists had PhDs about the in-situ theory and had published many papers on it. Many had a lifetime of work invested in the in-situ theory.
        
        Then along come the platists with some pretty compelling evidence. However being a platist could get you fired from a faculty because the in-situists had the power and they didn’t like their ideas challenged.
        
        You can understand that from a personal level. You don’t want to have worked on something your whole life and have your whole ego wrapped up in it for someone to just come along and say naah, its junk mate!
        
        Now I’m up for devil’s advocate. All new – and old – ideas should be challenged. But platism vs in-situism went further than that.
        
        We see the same happening with string theory, various fields of medicine, etc etc etc.
        
        And now we’re seeing it with climate science.
        
        As Plank said more than 70 years ago: “A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents…, but rather because its opponents eventually die.”

The achievements of GangGreen.

Thought I would start harvesting suggestions from the KB audience about the achievements of GangGreen whilst they have been polishing chairs in the Parliamentary Debating chamber, and numerous other locations.

I recall some years ago Jeanette Fitszimons claiming that she, virtually single handedly, invented the CFL light bulb. Somehow I doubt that is true, but lets give them a tick for that.

At about the same time she declared that she had some involvement with a shower head that restricted flow to 10 litres per second, which would have meant my hot water cylinder would be empty in 13 ½ seconds – some achievement that one ! Not sure whether that one deserves a tick ?

Then there was the eradication of powelliphanta augustus – remember that one? Not sure whether it was their intention to eradicate the giant NZ snail, but they managed to do just that ! Tick or Cross – comment please –

  Well they did help Labour cut 2 billion dollars of the revenue by sabotaging the partial asset sales. That saved the planet from the destruction that would have happened if they’d built a few more hospitals and schools.

        Always amazes me why people choose to live in the Australian bush, and then complain like mad when a bushfire comes through and destroys everything !

        I saw a documentary in which an Aboriginal woman started a bush fire while the grass was still at a level where it would quickly burn off and no worse destruction followed. She said that is how it had always been, and trying to prevent low-level bush fires would just allow huge destruction to follow later.

An ex and bearded reporter wants to ban all plastics, starting with supermarket bags. Then all the handy bags we use every day from food shops. Mr Vines, our PMs party are not going to be idiots and turn off most voters, because many of us use plastic bags around the home. The only places I see bags blowing around are in housing corp areas.

      There’s something about housing corp areas and disarray. It’s almost as if the perpetual untidiness of the yards and the inability of the tenants to clean up after themselves are an important signal to the State of “neediness” and “look after me.”
      
      Perhaps if a tenant looks like they have their act together, their case manager will press them to move along and find employment.
      
      This state of “learned helplessness” forms the basis for the symbiotic relationship between State welfare provider and beneficiary. They both need each other to survive.
      
      What will happen when a recession hits and NZ is once again faced with 10% unemployment last seen in the early 1990s?

  If councils did their job properly a lot of the rubbish blowing around would halve, on rubbish day it is just hit and miss with a lot of workers and on hitting the ground it is left for other to clean up.

    That’s a bit harsh, HC. Where I live householders who dont care – or dont realise – put their recycling bins out on windy days without anything to stop the local breezes wafting their plastic and paper all over the neighbourhood. By mid-morning the streets can strewn with rubbish. I am in constant admiration of our local rubbish collectors, who invariably pick up all the loose crap as well as the bins, so that by the time they have done their rounds the streets are clear. Of course the dear householder whose rubbish has been blown everywhere has no idea what their carelessness has meant because they are ensconced warmly in their offices.
    And the useless wheelie bins are also a problem because they, too, get blown over and release their contents on to the road or footpath. Again, the collectors clear the mess up.

      I have witnessed the same problem Kabull. Except my experience was in an area where the single truck operator did not collect any of the refuse, and in fact drove straight over it.
      
      Also the wheelie bins blew down the road until stopped by a fence – and there they remained for several weeks !

  All the plastic bags most of us get from the supermarket end up either recycled or under the ground in the tip, not in the ocean.
  
  It’s a form of insanity to blame inanimate objects for problems that are really caused by human behaviour and it’s all across the political spectrum: plastic, guns, drugs and alcohol, sugar, TV shows, etc.

The fuss over the Ardern 60 Minutes interview demonstrates a sad fact of contemporary life. Everyone’s opinion is equal, from the most ignorant to the most educated. It is the same with facts. In the absence of any gate-keeper, facts these days are simply information that you choose to believe, whether it is objectively supported and regardless of the reliability of its source. That applies to opinions. If you agree with someone, their opinion is automatically right, and anyone who disagrees with that opinion is wrong.

The loss of critical thinking engendered by contemporary methods of information dissemination is leading us to a society where opinions and ideas aren’t exchanged, evaluated and perhaps accepted, but simply become the subject of polarised dispute. The great saving of humanity has always been its ability to think critically and accept the validity of opposing views.

Am I alone in thinking we are losing that ability to absorb, evaluate and if appropriate, accept alternative views? Are we lessened as a society as a result?

      Just as there has always been group thinkers, there have been independent thinkers, mavericks, and off-the-planet wierdos.
      
      The dark ages do not seem attractive. Once the knowledge genie is out of the bottle, it can’t be put back easily.
      At a political level, perhaps we have not advanced much from the dark ages… folks still killing each other all around the world.
      But within our society, I experience greater advantages and freedoms than my mother and grandmothers did. The possibilities for my daughters seem greater still.
      
      We just have to ensure the groupthinkers don’t take control of all our minds.

  What’s important is that people are able to get new ideas out there and have them discussed and evaluated by others, and the ability to do that has never been greater than it is today.
  
  But it takes time for good ideas to triumph over bad ideas. The temporary irritation of bad ideas getting an audience before finally being rejected is something that I don’t think can be avoided.

Why don’t MSM ask Bryce Edwards how many times in the last nine years was he correct when picking who would win the last four General Elections, when Goff, Shearer,Cunliffe and Little were the Leaders of Labour.Then ask how many times he predicted that one of these Labour Leaders would beat John Key, so how would he know that Jacinda Ardern will win the 2020 General Election after Four Months into her three year term.     Not really that disturbing. The AG is currently required to report to Parliament whether legislation infringes the Bill of Rights, so Parliament has the opportunity before it is passed to amend or vote down the proposed statutory provisions. If legislation is subsequently discovered by the Courts to be inconsistent with the BofR, then it seems sensible for Parliament to have a fresh look. If Parliament has already considered the BofR inconsistency and chosen to overlook it, then I can’t see the Courts exercising the power to make a declaration, as that would be inconsistent with the supremacy of Parliament.

Certainly!

When did it all start? Well I think we can trace this all back to rot that set in with the Walkman in 1970s and has got worse ever since.

That might sound preposterous, but consider this.

Before the Walkman, people had to negotiate far more with each other, on so many levels. That constant negotiation at a personal level is healthy for a society. It requires discussion. It requires critical thinking. It requires pitting your ideas and preferences against others. It also means you sometimes have to listen to ideas and tastes counter to your own and perhaps learn something and change your mind.

Individualised experiences of the world change that: you can make your own little bubble and live in it. Your bubble is as relevant as anyone else’s bubble and nobody is allowed to challenge it (white males excluded).

Music listening started out as “What music shall we listen to?” and negotiations of “All right one more Abba track, then let’s listen to this new Police album”. That became became multiple people listening to their own Walkmans. No more negotiation. Eventually that lead to ipods and internet music feeds. No longer do you even decide what to listen to for yourself, some Spotify algorithm decides.

What is on TV was replaced with tapes and DVDs and, eventually, personal video feeds. With tapes a family might have to discuss what they’d watch: “We had a chick flick last week, how about a shoot-em-up?”. Now there’s less negotiation. No more discussion over what constitutes good vs bad TV. Now it’s all relative. And, again, the decision making is going: some damn Netflix algorithm probably decides what you watch.

Now we no longer even have truth. Everyone lives their own truth. Your truth is as good as anybody else’s truth. 2+2=4 is just your opinion.

No wonder we have a generation of snowflakes who go to university – a place where your ideas are supposed to be challenged – and all run for the puppy room as soon as an uncomfortable idea comes along.

  Fair point, but I find it infinitely preferably to the very narrow world of old. We were limited to a small set of ideas and world views in this little island at the end of the world (Oh wow! TV2! Two TV channels!)
  
  Now, geographical boundaries don’t mean much. There is a massive pool of people to communicate with and to share ideas with.
  
  If the price is people negotiate less, or choose to self-limit, so be it. I’d rather be spoiled for choice.

    I much prefer the other choices which we have in NZ. If I feel like going fishing tonight I can choose to head down to the Waimak mouth and try for kahawia or salmon, up to the lakes for rainbows or a small stream for some browns… Choices, choices!

      I think I communicate with more people now, and the scope is a lot wider, than when we were limited by geographic boundaries.

  I loved the very muscular response of the Tongan doctor who said that the kidney failure people were victims of their own lack of willingness to address their diabetes through diet and exercise. He said that by the time they get to renal failure they have had 5-10 years to change their lives and have chosen not to. He also said that the Tongan government had considered getting a dialysis unit and had chosen not to, as it would simply enable people not to address their own illness. If the Tongan government has made this political decision in the interests of the health of its people, TVNZ should just butt out and respect their sovereignty.

        On this one, I was surprised at all the fuss about a contaminated batch of Ecstasy, and yet neither the hospitals, media or Police even described the tablets. Party pills are all made with distinctive colours and patterns, so it would have been easy enough to say what the bad batch looked like. Instead they were busy telling people who had E’s to flush them all. Is this a deliberate approach, at the expense of individuals who may still have the specific tablets but will now not get rid of them, to serve some wider deterrent purpose? If so,it is naive and possibly dangerous. FFS, even at Woodstock they told people what the bad acid looked like, and that was nearly 50 years ago

    It’s the Pasifika way being what we call fat can be considered culturally beautiful. Also it may show rank. The poor cannot eat so well nor survive as readily through hurricane famines. Cheap mutton fat from NZ has fattened up many in a boilup of mutton flaps.
    
    I appreciate the Tongan Doctor’s position–they do have to have a massive cultural change. Who would get to use the dialysis machines? The nobles would be first and spare capacity would be unlikely.
    
    I am not unsympathetic to their plight. This is Pacific wide and we have our share too in NZ.

      I think the PM is not enjoying the role. If she quips that she has “a thousand problems” then you know she’s in trouble. She’ll bail once she’s had the baby I reckon. The reality of dealing with a newborn and a thousand problems all at once doesn’t look appealing. After all, she did say early on in the piece she was in the role for a good time, not a long time. We shall see.
      She’s a train wreck already happening, and the train hasn’t even left the station.
      I don’t think we’ve ever had a PM who is so in your face uneconomical with the truth.

Look people, without wanting to be too harsh on you, some here need to lay off on the Collins Viagra pills.

The reality is that JC has little appeal outside of the National base, which is where all of you firmly sit. To elect Judith would be a blunder on the scale of union leadership votes / Cunliffian proportions.

Luckily, the caucus aren’t the base. They talk to regular folk every day, and know that they need someone centre right but with broad appeal to moderates.

I’m gonna take a stab and say it’ll either be Soimon Brudges and Aymee Adims, with Joyce keeping finance. Anything more drastic would sentence the country to a minimum of six years under the drunken egotist and that nice lady having babies.

    I didn’t realise rabbis had so much power.

I hate to burst your bubble dear, but unless there are some things that obvious from the picture, that wall of yours doesn’t look like a very effective screen against cellphone-frequency radiation.

NZ cell phone frequencies operate down to approx 700MHz in NZ. That’s a wavelength of 0.43 metres. Effective screening needs to be at least 10 times the wavelength. ie. at least 4.3 metres and the individual panels are far smaller than that. The whole wall is also much shorter than that too.

Unless you’ve actually tested to prove otherwise, I’d hazard a guess that wall is only helping in your mind. Probably fitting, since the problem is most likely only there too.

3. There will be modifications to the Army’s new AR-style rifles from LMT. They will be permanently sealed on semi-automatic fire.

4. Military marches will be banned from State radio.

5. The present pacifism indoctrination in State schools will be intensified.

6. Kumbaya in two years will be the national anthem, after there is final agreement on translating lyrics into Maori.

  The unions have reduced it to a poorly paid trade, so recruitment will inevitably be difficult in a buoyant labour market.

  Teaching is a profession that is probably high on the list to which ‘AI’ can be expected to cut into with individualised teaching of a lot of different subjects.
  
  A few thousand educators producing comprehensive and adaptable lesson plans for AI systems to administer to 100’s of millions of children worldwide could greatly improve the standards of teaching for maths and science.

And from the complete BULLSHIT files the NZ Herald “front page news..scrolling breaking news title”…”Drone Hovers over Sunbathing Mother and Daughter”. If you can be bothered watching the video, the drone is at least 30 to 50m up. Having owned a few drones like the one in the article I can tell you that 1. The battery does not last 30 mins and in fact is more like 15 when you build in the “return home” factor and will do automatically. 2. One function these drones do not have is zoom capability. the much more expensive commercial versions do using a DSLR. So, the “victims” lied about the time the drone was there and the fact that you cannot zoom and the altitude means the drone could see very little in the way of detail.

The above said, it is illegal to fly over someones property without permission so the drone operator deserves to loose his toy for that alone. The rest of the story is plain bullshit and will further restrict people like myself who obey the rules.

      I endured three & a bit years at a boarding school Kimbo but we came to the parting of the ways when I was expelled two months into my sixth form year.
      
      It can be a bit tough on younger less physical kids but anyone being raised in a gang household would probably consider it a cradle of gentle luxury.
