  As was pointed out yesterday, the definition of “Maori” has been modified over time as the merging of races in this country continues. I recall that as late as in the 1970s, 50% was the acceptable level; now it is 1/32nd (just over 3%).
  
  Maybe being Maori is like being cranberry juice: only a small percentage of pure cranberry is sufficient to make the beverage palatable and saleable as “cranberry drink.”
  Only the other hand, being “white” is like apple juice: even 80% apple juice and 20% orange juice and the drink may be marketed as “orange.”

    I grew up in rural NZ in that era, and a good number of those in the Maori community would have been a lot less than 50% ancestry-wise.

        Simon interviewed by Duncan Garner this morning. Simon was going on about his background and whakapapa. Asked if he thought of himself as a maori or a NZ’er first? Simon replied a NZ’er, but is proud of his maori heritage.
        
        His first car was bought for him by his rich auntie. It was a convertible Mazda. Bet that made him popular out West!

    I make of it you are selective, likely even mischievous in your hearing and memory, as it was also pointed out to you yesterday, the Māori self-definition (which is the most important, indeed arguably the only valid one), is that if one has Māori whakapapa/genealogy, then one is entirely Maori. Percentages and fractions, even when implemented in the Pakeha-dominated colonial or assimilationist eras, were alien impositions.

      That doesn’t follow Polynesian cultural requirements. Title to property, real and personal, including tribal lands often goes with a title. An interest in tribal lands likewise to a recognised customary claimant. That’s what the Maori Land Court is concerned with. There is a similar Lands & Titles Court is Samoa where genealogies may be recited to show customary rights. These do not necessarily follow parentage.
      
      The Maori political roll has independent qualifications.
      
      A 3% Maori =97 % Pakeha (non-Maori.)

      Kimbo: Isn’t the answer, like it so often is: “It depends”.
      
      In casual settings perhaps people can get away with a lot more by self-identifying as being X, but for various official purposes it is as you say: you need to prove linkage to a whakapapa. No whakapapa, not a Maori.
      
      I know that is the case for playing in Maori sports tournaments etc.
      
      For example I know a young hockey playing man (as he is now) who has a European mother and a Maori father. He always wanted to play in the Maori hockey tournament as a boy.
      
      The father refused to acknowledge paternity, therefore no whakapapa and no playing. Bitter disappointment.
      
      Then the boy turned 18. The father acknowledged the paternity. The boy gets whakapapa and plays.
      
      The cynic might put this change of heart down to the father no longer having any child payment obligations, but it might have really been parental pride winning the day.

    That historically the “pure breed” white community has less forgiving of those with a “touch of the tar brush”.
    
    Mixed race children of white slave owners were usually still slaves, and I imagine that a child of one of those daughters would still give birth to slaves irrespective of that child’s father.

    Gobby, Bones & Parked-up promised due diligence in approving these projects. Five days later and the announcement statements are seen for what they are, no more than vacuous hot air.
    Many of the “projects” are nothing more than NZ Last election bribes with others being govt “pipeline” projects.
    $1billion “to invest” & they offered up $61million, that will provide only temporary work at best & some consultancy opportunities.
    
    Not regional economic development at all, as for the tree planting count, he is no better than Twitty Twitford & his KiwiBuild houses!

        My sister was run down and run over by a muslim about five years ago. She was not killed, but was very badly injured. The perpetrator fled, but was identified and captured by the law.
        
        In his statement to police he said “but she was only a woman” as some sort of justification for his actions, and for leaving the scene.
        
        Fortunately the jury did not find that an acceptable excuse for his actions, deliberated for five minutes and found him guilty !
        
        Unfortunately the judge only hit him with a wet bus ticket, and he is now free to do the same again !

        Try typing the name Abdul Wahid Abass AL MUSILHI (Al Musilhi is the surname) into the ACCR database (Australian Court Criminal Records) and you will get all the information you need to validate this.!

        From time to time I do post a piece of creative writing, as I am sure you will have witnessed. Yesterday for example about GangGreen.
        
        They all seem to be accepted with good humour and as good humour.
        
        This one however was very harrowing at the time, and is hardly the sort of thing you would invent. I went to Sydney to support my sister in court and was rather shocked at the content of the police report which was presented in court. I suppose Sam can find that if he chooses to dig that deep !

      The huge differences are:
      
      1) Behaviour like that is not condoned in Western society.
      2) It is incredibly uncommon for European men to act this way. When they do there is no cultural victim card played. It is not just shrugged off as a “sexual emergency”.

    Statistics will still have people going door to door. There will be no problem is Statistics predicted reasonably accurately the likely portion of those requiring intensive follow-up. If they seriously under-predicted this then there would be a problem. If they over-predicted those who would do returns via internet, it would mean that there would be more paper forms to process but that is manageable.
    My criticism of the on-line census process is it does not seem to be reviewable. If you submit and then realise you have given a dud answer you do not seem to be able to correct it. Compare with IRD’s online IR3 form where you can save an incomplete return if short of information etc, and can review it as much as needed before pressing the big button.

      Peterwn, Census NZ or whatever they call themselves is advertising there will not be the usual knock at the door during this survey. The mailout informs the householder of how to access the online survey, or you may contact Census NZ for a hard copy to complete and post back. Apparently they consider everyone is diligent enough to follow their instructions, that’s if they even bother to read the mailout in the first place.

        I think you will find that those who have not responded by 6 March will be getting a knock on the door with forms being handed out in the usual way. Statistics Department (who run the census) would have given some thought to the number of households requiring a follow-up. They would in particular be following up hotels, motels and similar places.

If the minimum household income needed to afford such a home is $144,000, then Labour will never get the houses to people who need them. Isn’t it time just to grit our teeth, bulk buy kitset houses from China and bring in Chinese gangs to put them up?   The world over, the average dwelling is more akin to a shipping container or a garage. Maybe you can even stretch to a soviet-style concrete apartment block.

  There are enough people who will write them as long a publisher or some other party puts up the money and/or underwrites it. If Winston wants one he could soon pay to have one written. It would be interesting to know if an independent publisher thinks such a biography would be profitable. Getting access to his papers could be an issue since someone or the estate may not give the biographer access to the papers unless reasonably sure the biography would be unfavourable.

She looked the picture of our future with her husband.
Of course the media have done the usual anti National at any cost fawning to the indomitable wonders of Cinderella – she should contact Metiria who at least besides also being a liar and cheat knew how to dress expensively (not on $500,000 a year).
Nationals problem is that they have considerable real talent and it is now to use it. I still want Joyce in Finance with a good alternative which are available.
Glad it is over and now they can get down to the role of opposition – that is to Oppose.

    And the number one prerequisite is to have the support of Caucus. There would have been a real problem if the leader was selected by a panel made up of representatives of the Board, representatives of major donors and a minority representative of MP’s.
    Any who are disenchanted with the leadership decision and cannot get used to it are better off to walk (at a time not to cause problems). There are plenty of others out there who want to be National MP’s. They can easily find alternative employment (or they would not be National MP’s to start with).
    I do hope that at the start of each Caucus Meeting they recite the mantra ‘the overarching objective of a political party is to get into power or if in power to stay in power’. Also a MP should give a brief ‘thought’ at the end of the meeting as happens at Rotary Clubs (or at least the one where I have been a guest now and again).

  Look ahead to when supermarkets stop supplying plastic bags. A shopper has a trolley full of groceries and forgets the reusable bags which they will need to purchase at the counter, or go to their vehicle with frozens happily melting. Supermarkets have problems at present with thieves deliberately not scanning certain items, done with such dexterity that even the CCTV won’t pick it up. Cue to reusable bags with false compartments and there are problems for checkout operators, especially on holiday rush time.

Another piece of news that slipped under the radar yesterday. Cindy has bought herself a fight with some who “suffered institutional abuse” & are “survivors of abuse” at Catholic Boys schools from 1950 to 1999.
Yesterday, Red Radio reported the cases of a father & son who apparently suffered abuse at 2 different Catholic Schools. As reported, Cindy was silly enough to set a time bomb for herself 5 years ago, in that in 2013 the father wrote to her seeking support, she wrote back promising Labour would set up a full enquiry into such matters. Five years on, her Royal Commission isn’t allowed to look into abuse in Church (or other non-state institutions unless the state was responsible for putting the child there in the first place).
The best part was Cindy being interviewed as to way she set up the Royal Commission with the limited ToR. It was pure gold, and was revealing in how out of her depth she is.

  I have a friend who is a Lake Alice survivor.
  
  He is consumed by the “injustices” of the past, and is constantly talking to advocates, media and pro-bono lawyers about that part of his life. He has already received a settlement of in excess of $100,000 but is still seeking some additional retribution.
  
  But whenever I ask him about what he is trying to achieve he has no answer, and keeps bumbling on about the perpetrators of the experiments performed on him back at Lake Alice. Of course most of these perpetrators are now dead, or have left New Zealand to escape ongoing scrutiny.
  
  By today’s standards, some of the “experiments” performed back in the 60’s and 70’s are indeed barbaric, but at the time they knew no better, and probably believed their actions, at the time, were meritorious.
  
  Similarly – here on KB we frequently see references to actions back in the last century held up to try and prove a point. Even today we see reference to Mohammed and Aisha – activities from how many centuries ago?
  
  Those who build their life foundation on such antiquities need a real wake up call, there is no doubt. But for the vast majority of us we need to accept that we are living in a new age, and begin to look forward. Please !

  Since the Catholic schools came into the State system in 1975, it could be argued that their pupils fall under the watch of the State.
  The schools are ‘in loco parentis” whilst the pupils are in attendance.

Does Labour stand by its decision to raise our wages (hugely) in New Zealand considering that more companies are going to outsource our jobs. Eg Insurance companies.

Outsourcing means sacking New Zealanders who pay tax, and giving the job to some person in India or The Philipines who will get paid much less, but will not pay tax here.

Where will those people who get laid off get jobs?

    Hide basically buried it with his perk hypocrisy and inability to manage his caucus and he certainly tarnished the rep with the super city fiasco he left behind.   EAD2, You say that the ADL made up the story about Cruz being a white supremacist, but the fact is that the ADL and other organisations were told by the leader of a Florida white supremacist group that Cruz was a member, a claim which he later disavowed, so I don’t quite see how the ADL can be responsible for the fabrication. Also, you keep banging on about how he is Hispanic, but you overlook that he was adopted at birth, as was his brother Zachary, from an unidentified mother and unknown father, so he could be of any ethnicity. He certainly doesn’t look terribly Hispanic to me. But be careful EAD2, with names like Nikolas and Zachary they could be…………..JEWS!!!!

i watch some aussie tv (some kiwi dude made a kodi add on and all freeview oz tv streams beautifully) and foxtel advertises a lot. they are cheap as.

  I was a loyal customer for ten years and when I disconnected they tried to charge me for an extra month, then when I returned the Box and Decoder to them (That’s right- Sky actually make you drive halfway across the City to their office to return) they tried to charge me for a missing piece of equipment that I had never heard of.
  They backed off when I told them I would happily see them in Court.
  As I left I politely asked if they ever ‘Wondered why they are Haemorrhaging Customers’?

    I ended the contract.
    Each month was paid in advance.
    The date of the final contract month ended on a Sunday.
    I dropped the decoder off on a Saturday as that worked out better to go over to Mt Wellington.
    It was all pre-paid and I simply dropped off a ‘hired’ device one day early.
    
    Then Sky TV sent me a bill for two months connection for ‘breaking the contract early’
    No, I simply dropped it off early.
    Emails were exchanged with them backing off when I said it goes legal and in court there will be a permanent record of their illegal behaviour. Total pricks.
    
    SkyTV and Vodafone. Appalling billing systems and customer service – huh? Que ? Service…what is that?
    Instead of allowing a deal to run its course and keep a door open for future activity they looked to make enemies.
    I have viewed SkyTV in the 5 years since as scum and filth.

OH has always supported National but is not a member.

A) Just burning the fuel used to transport the rubbish.

The energy density of household waste is pretty low. It is only about one tenth that of coal or oil. High plastic waste streams from industry would be much higher though.

Of course for $3500 you won’t get as many fancy Power Points and we won’t be able to throw in some guided fishing and a helicopter when you come look at the site proposals.

Money for investigations is complete jam. Just take the money (charging out all the workers who touch it at $150/hr) and then just say “naah, won’t work” at the end.

  Having once been attacked by a bull terrier and needing about three good “taps” on the head with a big spanner to change its mind, I very much doubt cuddles are going to work. Luckily for me it only ripped up the sleeve of my overalls and I was within arm’s length of a tool chest.
  
  The cops are our employees and we are obliged to give them as safe a workplace as we can. If that includes using tasers and even guns to subdue dangerous dogs then so be it.

    Police dog handlers know dogs, but some other constables are fairly ignorant about dogs.
    
    Youtube has many clips of overseas police shooting dogs at wrong houses, service dogs mistaken for pit bulls, and so on.

        I know a very sweet young lady whose small dog was killed by a relation’s pitbull. She wasn’t angry with the owner because she said the dogs “got along fine most of the time”.
        It doesn’t seem to occur to many naive people that it doesn’t matter if a pitbull is fine 99.9% of the time, if in that other .01% of the time, it manages to tear your little dog’s throat out or scar a child for life.

        The NZ Veterinary Association says this on the flaws of classifying dogs as “menacing” or “dangerous”.
        
        The NZVA objects to the automatic menacing classification given to dogs based on their breed or type for the following reasons:
        
        Aggressive behaviour in dogs can be encouraged by an owner in any number of large, powerful breeds of dogs. Breed correlations in dog bite statistics may actually be reflecting the owner’s behaviour as the underlying causal factor (American Veterinary Medical Association Animal Welfare Division., 2014).
        
        Dog breed is not the biggest contributing factor to a dog bite incident (Patronek, Sacks, Delise, Cleary, & Marder, 2013) and to target specific breeds or types as menacing is a gross oversimplification of this complex issue. It fails to capture large numbers of potentially dangerous dogs that belong to breeds that are not classified as “menacing” or who are crossbreds and promotes a false sense of security.
        
        It does not address or promote an attitude of responsible dog ownership. Regardless of the positive actions taken by an owner of a dog classified as menacing due to its breed or type, the dog remains classified and is subject to restrictions that reduce its welfare.
        
        Dog bite statistics do not accurately reflect the risk of a given breed or type as they are skewed by the popularity of the breed or type of dog. The list of biting breeds is also subject to change over time to reflect changes in popularity of dog breeds or types (Collier, 2006). The identification of the breed or type of dog involved in a dog bite incident is also subject to inaccuracies (Wake, Minot, Stafford, & Perry, 2009).
        
        It wastes resources by unnecessarily restricting dogs that pose no threat. The focus of dog control efforts should be on responding to the aggressive behaviour, rather than the breed or type of dog.
        
        Identification of a pit bull-type is unreliable as it encompasses a range of breeds, informal types and appearances. The NZVA does not support identification of unregistered breeds and/or crossbreeds on the basis of ‘visual assessment’ due to the lack of scientific correlation between genetic makeup and physical characteristics (Australian Veterinary Association Ltd, 2012).
        
        Breed-specific legislation has not worked overseas. Although politically expedient, overseas experience has shown it to be ineffective at managing dog bite incidents (Australian Veterinary Association Ltd, 2012). Three European and several US administrations have now reviewed and reversed breed-specific legislation.

        Jack5: the vet association can pontificate to their hearts content, but it doesn’t change the fact that there are plenty of dogs out there who wouldn’t bite you if you put your hand in their mouth.
        E.g. golden retrievers.
        (And my kids tried doing that with ours, apparently.)
        There is no need to keep dogs capable of killing or seriously injuring people or other animals.
        The only dogs who should be permitted to bite are police dogs….and good on them!

  There are also similar stink bugs in Africa. They release some awful smelling/tasting stuff when threatened by predators or crushed. Some also release a stink to attract mates.
  
  Some stink bugs can actually forcefully spray the muck.

    Hard to see that happening unless they have some money stashed outside the country. Most of the more mobile young professionals with portable skills left long ago. Those that are left are mainly those that are pretty much stuck.
    
    If you have 4 generations invested in improving the land and nowhere to go with it, then I can see why someone might just say WTF and make a stand.
    
    Some people just don’t want to see the writing on the wall. My sister (a qualified nurse) and her husband (diesel mechanic) moved to Uk, but then moved back to South Africa about 20 years ago. They, and their teenage kids are now trapped having blown all their reserves and by a shitty education system that makes it really hard to build up a portable skill set.

  2) Likely no more due process on establishing who really has rights to ownership.

    Ramaphosa is trying to turn over a leaf for the ANC. They are trying to make it look like all the corruption is now gone with Zuma and the best way to shift the focus is by ratcheting up the land issue.
    
    The corruption is nowhere near finished. It is completely systematic from top to bottom.
    
    Africa is now finally Africa from head to toe. Sure, Cape Town is the only city in Africa that is not majority black, but it is on the skids and as good as gone.
    
    The University of Cape Town (where I went to uni in the 1980s) was the first real university in Africa (discounting religious colleges) and is now fucked – with science being adjusted to be more African.
    
    The last glimmers of westernism that have brought prosperity, peace and wealth to Africa is being snuffed out.

  The dirtiest, most smelly bastard I ever came across used to drink in a pub in Upper Hutt Maggy. Those were the days when we used to cart hay over the hill & by the time we stopped for a brew on the way home we had a thirst you could photograph.
