  The government’s mainstay project Kiwibuild is off to a flying start.
  
  Ironically, it kicks off in Westport. HNZ application lodged with Buller District Council to construct 3 x 2/3 bedroom duplexes in Domett St.
  
  Just maybe Twitford will be able to stick a shovel in the ground and turn the first sod before June ?
  
  Tens of thousands to go, but at least the “conversation” has begun !

on the back Waiting and the PR triumph that Jacinda Ardern achieved, I was thinking about her deliberate use language for example, how she employed ‘judginess’ rather than ‘judgementalism’ This was deliberate wasn’t it?

Is it fair to say that she has emerged as a shrewd and cynical politician who will continue to market Labour to the people for a long time yet?

  There’s one other explanation. It’s not that Ardern herself is a “shrewd and cynical politician”, but the real power behind her is her mentor, Helen Elizabeth Clark, who certainly fits the “shrewd and cynical” label.

Also Soliders married British women, an accepted practice in the roman army, and when the army left they stayed behind. Remember the Romans were in Britain for nearly 400 years.
  Also there was a strong trade from African and Mediterranean countries in Britain. Ships were not that reliable so many were wreaked or not fit to sail back and the sailors settled down with the local population.
  Slavery was only abolished in the UK in 1803/1833.

      Because it doesn’t account for the Cheddar Man – it’s likely junk science that can be filed right beside “global warming”. It is not surprising that this came out during “Black History Month” either where all sorts of bullshit gets passed off as fact in the name of Political Correctness.
      
      I am highly sceptical that it would be possible to accurately judge someone’s skin tone from DNA alone, other than by allocating that person to a racial group, or hybrid, and then applying the standard colouration for that group. Genetic science is not yet at the point where we can look at a person’s genome and accurately guess their height, build or colouration, other than by reference to broad racial categories.
      
      It is interesting that the man behind the study’s background is in computing rather than genetics. It may be that he has designed some computer model, whose results could be wildly inaccurate.
      
      Even if some early people in Britain were darker skinned than the British, they were still separated from Africans by 60,000 to 90,000 years and far closer to modern Britons than to modern or ancient Africans. Race is not just skin colour. Skin colour is a minor and relatively unimportant aspect of race.

The COL have named another inquiry to look into the cost of electricity. Are consumers paying too much? A man interviewed in the street suggested the price should drop by 25% for the consumer.

Did those calling for cheaper electricity consider that the infrastructure including dams, turbines, pylons, undersea cables are expensive to construct and to maintain? That the Greens won’t allow any more highly efficient hydro-electric dams to be built, nor coal-fired electricity production, and definitely no nuclear power production for NZ. That wind-turbines been have found not to be efficient enough to produce sufficient electricity for the countries growing consumption?

Will our future electricity needs be met? What is going to happen when the dreams of lovely electric cars inhabit our roads and require their batteries to be plugged in to be charged on a regular basis?

So many questions…

  ‘Dr’ Megan Woods said that prices had increased by 50% and then very quietly added the words ‘since 2000.’ Thats less than 3% a year – hardly outrageous.
  
  The COL members are still smarting over the semi-privatisation of the power companies and in reality this is what the enquiry is all about.

      The rate is only that of inflation. Our power prices are relatively internationally competitive. The constant population growth requires an increase in generation capacity which does not come out of green mouths.
      
      The charges have to enable the continuing capital development.

        Pardon KevOB? Internationally competitive? While the actual electricity rate might be comparative the additional charges make it the opposite. For our modest little house the months usage of 169 kw/h was the equivalent of NZ$43.39 total.
        Plus there has been very little added to the national capacity with whatever is listed as “capital development”.
        Another concern is that Transpower will no longer be giving customers the annual rebate that were so great to get in the past. Likewise the COL are worried about pending increases and their extra power bill benefit for superannuates is to offset that more than their tax increase.

        Yes Prince but real people understand true “relativity” rather than feelz. We have the longest stretch of extremely low inflation ever which the COL are about to double at the very least. Even the shill in the RBNZ has changed their outlook to interest rising sooner than earlier predictions. The OCR has remained static this week but old WP’s dark days are coming because it was him who authored the secret agreement. Few would know the poofters lack of economic ability as he has seen him up close since he made to the Labour benches.

    The Lefties and Greenies are on their way to causing power-supply chaos.
    
    Green electricity needs gas or coal-fired backups to cater for peak demand, and to balance supply variation caused by weather.
    
    NZ hydro power is reaching its limit, before it upsets Greens by requiring new flooding of mountain valleys.
    
    Our terrain doesn’t allow substantial storage reserves of water, unlike the geography of hydro-power countries like Norway. So we always have fairly short-term water storage.
    
    Geothermal generation is uncertain because of meandering underground sources and unpredictability of supply.
    
    Wind and solar are at the whim of weather and light.
    
    If we want Green power, we need our offshore gas and CSG from coalfields. Unfortunately, greenies have driven away the foreign research vessels that would have provided the former, and the latter requires fracking, which makes Greenies faint.
    
    Dr Megan Woods needs to get up to speed in electricity engineering pretty quickly. Her background in the history of feminism hasn’t prepared her to chart NZ’s electricity future.

  The problem with the obsession with renewables is that we need to build twice the capacity in case the wind doesnt blow or the sun doesnt shine.
  Gas powered plants are being built to ensure the electricity is still available on calm, cloudy days. This means we could scrap all the turbines and solar panels and just have the ultra efficient gas plants.

  The Government has two choices on electricity pricing. It can basically let market forces get on with it. Or it can accept that the generation companies will stop investing in new plant (and close old plant kept as reserve) which will lead to a shortage in due course. This means the government will either have to arrange new plant itself or subsidise new plant. There is a third option – screw the investors in the five major generation companies – most of which are ordinary people either directly or via Kiwisaver etc, not just rich fat cats.

  Interesting waikatogirl and though it might sound like just semantics the article termed it a “review” perhaps the podgy Dr was trying to keep a low profile. Pound for pound though she does look like the new standard for female police recruits.
  Of significance in relation to the infrastructure you list is the point these assets were gifted to the SOE’s created.
  It was interesting attending a meeting that marked the transition from NZED to Power Corp. The first employee tree for the current staff of 128 was turned over to reveal the “new” staff tree of 8 staff. In fairness though any of the 128 could apply for any on the 8 new positions. The rest got a fair redundancy package and thank you for coming in. This event was in Nelson and was being held at the same time throughout the country.
  Since then there has been virtually no expansion of their capacity so they have just lived off the fat.
  However be it called review or inquiry it will not report back until sometime next year (2019) by which time the production costs will have gained the Fool Factor of forced wage rises. It also will be after yet another winter season that promises to be very cold and without the benefits of global warming. Thus we can anticipate the sob story from Woods how there is no room for price cuts except if they go ahead with their plans to nationalise it. Yes we may well ask is this really reason to help them with that rather than help the customers. Is this part of the secret agreement? This like all other questions asked of the COL formally and informally will likely never be answered until after the event.

      Even more, it seems that Steele may not have even prepared all that much of his “dossier”; two well known Clinton Associates Sid Blumenthal and Corey Shearer appear to have been involved in feeding snippets into it.
      
      It is also interesting that Carter Page actually left the Trump campaign before the FISA warrant was obtained, and that back in 2013, Page was not only investigated by the FBI in regard to Russian attempts to recruit him and others, he also served as an undercover FBI informant and passed bugged folders of info onto the Russians involved. So in 3 years he went from being undercover for the FBI to being a Russian spy.
      
      There’s so much that smells about the whole affair that a special counsel just has to be appointed, IMHO.
      
      There’s also pretty good evidence that there was a conspiracy to pervert justice with regard to the Clinton email case, and the dropped investigation relating to Uranium One. Perhaps a second special counsel to investigate the Clinton Foundation would be in order.

    Probably the tax collected would not justify the cost. But the benefit is not just the tax collected. It’s also the fact local suppliers would no longer suffer a 15% penalty relative to their overseas competitors. That is hard to quantify but could be worth quite a lot.

      Sorry NK but goods from offshore are often half the price delivered compared to local retail or even parallel imports. If buyers are only saving the equivalent of GST they are wasting their time. Amazon is a poor option for most who buy offshore and their freight costs are among the highest. The trap for many is the freight cost often includes an equal amount for customer country customs or clearance costs. Wise shoppers know A) the best country/supplier and B) the best freight method.
      A new Philips wet&dry razor arrived at less than half the local price freight free without ANY local charges applied. The other thing needed is a little patience as this took 3 weeks it could have been 5-7 days with massive extra costs added starting with carrier freight costs.

    But tf78 it has no bearing where or how the goods were made/produced. GST or VAT are simply a consumption tax paid for by the buyer. NZ has one of the simplest of all with NO exemptions but the downside is goods & and; services. Last addition to every other item charged. It is also why the last increase was a brilliant move by Bill English made tax neutral by income tax cuts. The poor little poofter just can’t grasp it at all. Less income tax = more pay in the hand = equals more GST collected when you spend it. Considering that the low/middle income majority spend all they earn on average. The low paid on their NEEDS if wise and the middle earners get to gain some of their WANTS or save more depending on degrees of wisdom.

  Interesting; I have also heard the “blood transfusions during recess” story about Peters from several people within the parliamentary precinct.
  
  One suggested that he may be suffering from chronic leukaemia, and had noticed that his peaks and troughs coincided, in order, with a new parliamentary session beginning, and a three week session ending. Peters would return to the House invigorated at the start of a new session, but by the time three weeks had elapsed was either absent most of the time or pale, shaky and at times incoherent.

    I can’t remember any other politician (except maybe Muldoon) who was so hated by some parts of the electorate that they literally wished him dead. This speaks volumes about the man.

      I’m not at all gleeful Dave. If Peters is terminally ill, he shouldn’t be spending his final days trying to prop up a political party that won’t survive his demise.
      
      The question is however, is Peters medically fit to be acting Prime Minister in June, when Ms Ardern goes off to have her child? If he is unfit to discharge those duties, we, the public of New Zealand, should know.
      
      If the rumours surrounding Peters’ health are true (and I’ve heard everything from Parkinsons and Alzheimers to emphysema and leukaemia), I would far rather he retired from public life gracefully, and spent his remaining days with his family and close friends.
      
      Having had my own health issues in recent months including a prolonged period off work, I have come to realise that working isn’t everything, and when I do return to work (hopefully around Easter), it will only be on a part-time basis as I transition towards retirement in a few years. There’s a helluva lot more to life than working every hour God gives you.

Our Minister of Employment was not aware Maori unemployment had dropped 20% in the last year, and kept denying that was true.
Also denied what Grant Robertson said yesterday that the CoL had no Maori-specific policies to implement or money to spend. Apparently Espiner had made that up !.

So, a years free tertiary education…… perhaps not!

I’ve just been advised by a friend of mine that his daughter is not eligible to receive a years free tertiary education, the reason why will stagger you! Apparently she is ineligible because she achieved over 60 level 3 NCEA credits!!

Yep, apparently if you do really well at school, work hard and get good results, you get to pay to go to university, while the slackers and ne-er do wells get to take a year free.

Mind you, I guess that is great training for living in a socialist workers paradise!

This is as contained on the Studylink website, and confirmed by the staff at the local tertiary institution!

The young woman in question was unaware of this until she got an invoice for several thousand dollars!!

  Right of way, your friend should take this up with the Minister if necessary. In his statement of 5 December he said
  “If you’re a New Zealander who finished school in 2017, or if you will finish school during 2018, you qualify for a year of free provider based tertiary education or industry training in 2018. If you’re not a recent school leaver, and you’ve done less than half a fulltime year of education or training, you also qualify”
  If your friend’s daughter was it school last year then she should qualify. I know that some of the universities talked to officials about some of the very bright students who did some university papers while still at school. I think the response was that so long as they had taken less than half a year’s study they were ok (and it is possible that even if they had done more they were still ok, so long as they were still at school). The intention was not to rule out the very brightest, who after all are the ones we want to encourage to go to university.
  
  It is possible that the daughter’s 60 credits were not NCEA but tertiary work done while she was still at school, but either way she shouldn’t take any bullshit from the institution or StudyLink and should hold the Minister to his words.

If you vote for euthanasia, then you have no right to, for example, protest the government coming to take your son away to have his penis removed at 5 and to be given to a gay man to make love to, because that is the 5 years olds self determining will, and you are irrelevant. That law exists, right now, in Canada.
    
    Euthanasia voters need to stop pretending that the issue exists in isolation.
    
    As for the Catholic church, I’ve said it before, once an institution becomes appropriated by the homosexual movement, it dies. The obvious link between all these priest’s homosexuality and what ‘some of them’ did to little boys (a lot of the class actions are money fishing expeditions) miraculously seems to have been overlooked.
    
    Tell me with a straight face, that those titles are anything but the most almost tragicomedical brain washing operations for kids.
    
    Tell me that’s what they should be learning instead of Aesop’s fables or Greek myth (where echoes of pagan sexualiry exist but always in the context of moral lessons) or Grimm’s tales, or shit even famous five.
    
    The backlash to this absolute fuckery is going to be terrible. The Canadians are fucked in the head. They don’t seem to understand that once the Muslim kids are a majority, their parents will stab in the neck anyone trying to teach that utter trash.

  What really needs to be factored in, which society doesn’t like to face, is that many kids will get NO support, and even active discouragement, from their excuses for parents.
  We need to explain to kids the why’s and how’s of succeeding in life.
  We need to impress on them they have a RIGHT to an education, not to be free babysitters for mum’s cash cows. That is HER job.
  We need to ensure that the money meant to feed, clothe and educate kids goes to those kids, not their parent’s addictions.

Just heard some of Larry William’s interview with Alwyn Poole.
A couple of points:
1. He said most of the kids coming to his schools are at about 35% on the “scale” for literacy –ie. well below average. But their extensive data shows they accelerate at a rate of 1.5yrs/year under their programs so when they go off to secondary school they are normally up to speed.
2. About 95% of their kids are Maori or Pacific Island kids —given that, it does not seem to be great political move.

Did we not learn last week something like 1.0 million kids are under achieving ? I think Hipkins will get a massive back lash on this.

Remember whn schools were due to be closed in Christchurch post earthquake, and the parade of kids and parents from an anguished school community berating the National Government for doing it?

The South China Morning Post reports that as hundreds of thousands of tiny farms close, unable to meet pollution standards, huge “sow farms” are being set up.

Several hundred farms, each with 5000 to 8000 head of pigs, will open this year.

Live-hog futures began trading this week. Using these, farmers can hedge risks.

Fang Shijun, chief researcher at research firm Huitong Data, is reported as saying there will be an increasing surplus in Chinese pork production over the next three years.

The South China Morning Post says:

In the long-term, it also could turn China’s pork producers into international competitors, offering quality, competitively priced meat to regional markets.
