Taika Waititi’s ‘NZ is as racist as f***’ diatribe seems a little naïve and I think he has bought his own publicity and become what most kiwis call a ‘wanker’.

I mean, he’s quite funny and good at observing genuine kiwi culture (ref. the scene in Wilderpeople where he is a bizarre Church pastor) but at the end of the day Thor Ragnarok was totally shit and he is only a film director, who did well partially because the NZ Film Commission does not consider any proposal that doesn’t have Maoris, gender confused people or refugees in it.

Taika (if that is your real name lol) hate to break this to you but –

People are ‘racist as f***’ in NZ because they watch the TV news, listen to the radio, read the paper, watch Police 10-7 and fully understand the ethnicities of those who commit the most crimes, are continually the most needy etc

  I enjoy the Marvel Films- But Thor Ragnarok was probably one of their weaker efforts.
  NZ Media went completely over the top (‘Taika has changed the game’ etc etc) as usual.
  Reality is- It was actually pretty disappointing.

      But is modifying the pronunciation and grammar of Maori words when incorporating them into English racism, ignorance or unexceptionable behaviour?
      
      For some guidance on this, worshippers of one of our founding documents might note that some English words have been given a Maori form – tiriti, Niu Tirani, Kuini Wikitoria, Ingarani, Wiremu Hopihona.
      
      Denouncing people for using modified forms of words from other languages in their own language is linguistically naive and closer to racism than the act of modification itself, IMO. Let people choose whichever form they feel comfortable with. I notice that I usually say all six syllables of Paraparaumu quite distinctly, but I also say Oderhu for Otahuhu. If others say these words differently – fine.

        I’m not saying that I agree with him, but I presume that as we’re all New Zealanders, living in New Zealand (I, again, presume you are), then we should be making a decent attempt at “proper” Maori pronunciation.
        
        So, yes, correcting that “Oderhu”. But if there’s some sort of colloquialism like there are a couple for Paraparaumu, it seems like a far stretch to call that a problem.

    For the Ministry of Education to be logically consistent and to uniformly discourage school children from unhealthy lifestyle choices, such as drug use and smoking, I would expect them to also discourage youngsters from experimenting with homosexual or bisexual practices.
    The statistics indicate sub-par health outcomes for such behaviors.

      As a gay man, I can’t dispute that statistically, we’re pretty dire for venereal diseases and HIV infection (though I have neither personally!).
      
      However I would counter that it’s unwise to discourage sexual practices that would occur regardless. Discouraging something as bad and dirty just increases the risk factors that occur alongside the inevitable actions, as that behaviour is forced to hide. Likewise, whilst I strongly doubt a lot of gay men will ever be monogamous, as homosexuality is normalised in society more gay men feel comfortable openly dating and getting into happy relationships, rather than hanging around seedy bars or worse, public toilets.
      
      I fully expect someone to try and counter this argument with “but what about ATEED’s infamous event ‘KiwiFist’?”, mind you!

        Being homosexual is not the norm despite those who try and say its accepted now in society. It has been forced down peoples throats and if you disagree in any way shape or form you are instantly labelled homophobic. Same with Maori.. disagree and you are wacist.
        Homosexuality is not, and never will be ‘the norm’. Leave it in the public toilet, or in your bedroom.

        The bedroom and the public toilet are very different things – I like the former, the idea of the latter repulses me, as it does basically every gay man I know.
        
        And I never said it was the norm, and certainly don’t seek to usurp the basis of society and human reproduction, I’m just happy to coexist.
        
        My personal philosophy is that my life can exist quietly alongside yours or anyone else’s and is no better or worse – I’d never tell someone my lifestyle (and note, being a gay is very small part of my life) was any better than theirs, but if someone, unprovoked, told me I was a less worthy member of society simply based on who I went to bed with, they’d rightly get an earful.
        
        I agree many acronym-activists are fucking idiots and completely misguided, and inevitably left wing and obsessed with identity politics which is a major turn off. As a result I have very little to do with the ‘official’ gay community. I don’t think that’s unusual in itself mind you – conversely most relatively conservative nuclear families think anti-gay activists like Brian Tamaki are fuckwits.

        You could make the same case for any other harmful practice. “Oh, they’re going to use drugs anyway, so we may as well legalize it and bring it out into the open”. Society has a duty to limit practices that are harmful to the polis at large, not to endorse them using the faulty reasoning that the people practicing those harmful things might hurt themselves. Police shouldn’t chase speeding cars in case the fleeing person gets hurt, etc.
        
        Conversely, I would say that it’s wrong to encourage such practices, the way society is doing right now.

        Fletch, with respect I do not think society, especially schools, are ‘encouraging’ sex (gay or otherwise) simply by acknowledgement of it’s existence and, through sexual education programmes, making people aware of potential risks associated with that behaviour (STDs) and mitigation strategies (condoms, testing, etc.).
        
        The perverse elements of any sexuality will always attract media and popular attention. Recently ‘choking’ (erotic asphyxiation) appears to have become a bit of a heterosexual pop culture phenomenon despite the obvious dangers, yet I doubt it is practiced by the vast majority of couples. Likewise most gay men are rightly horrified at the thought of a whole fist up their anus, ratepayer funded or otherwise!

  I caught a 60 second spell from radio live yesterday afternoon as I passed through the shed. They were discussing this issue. Lisa Owen said something to the effect of;-

      Phil as much as I hate what you are saying it is, unfortunately, the truth and we need to face the fact that National will not reverse anything Labour does just slow the car heading for the cliff.
      Like Labour they are poll driven and want to be liked by the media, who they fool themselves into thinking are representitive of the electorate. As much as Roger Douglas and Ruth Richardson were polarising figures they pout this country on the road to prosperity and the current mob seem intent on taking the dead end road up ahead. I have little confidence Simon Bridges will be any different from Jacinda but my one glimmer of hope is the fact he has MP’s around him who have had real world experience and they may drag him onto the right path.

  Which is a very similar way of looking at it, as my own “Vichy” label for “centre right” governments who pretty much follow the program of their long-term enemies, all while presenting an illusion “not to have actually lost the war”.
  
  Simon Bridges says they wouldn’t repeal the petrol tax. Actually, I don’t believe they’ll repeal the ban on offshore drilling either, or anything they say they will repeal – going by the last time they had 3 terms in government.
  
  They might even pass a water tax themselves if Jacinda doesn’t get around to it, just like they passed an Emissions Trading scheme that Helen hadn’t quite got around to. Especially if they end up in a coalition with the Greens (how low can they go?)
  
  There’s a wealth of facts out there that could and should be used as ammunition in the political arena, by the political right – letting the Left’s lies win all the time is certainly deserving of the label “Vichy”.

  I don’t believe the Nats will restart Charter schools either. Or restart highway building. Or restore the “3 strikes” law. There should have been 300 charter schools going after 3 terms in office, in fact the whole system should have been moved to “parental choice” and “funding following the child”.

      Knowing some of the Nats MP’s, it will require a victory on the part of those who have principles deep down inside and have been biding their time, versus the ones that pretty much tossed a coin to decide whether to become candidates for National, Labour, or The Greens.   Rather ironically you refer to principles – Winston -he’s really clinging to his isn’t he. The enquiry king hasn’t made a squeak about the dodgy behaviour even from the Minister for Open government. Spinelessness – Jacinda – any half decent leader should have chopped one or both of Kirton or Curran as I believe this will come back to bite. Why is it only the RNZ employee gets chopped?

    I have frequently condemned Winston on that very point. Every single person I know who voted for Winston is spewing now – and what is more, I warned them all against voting for him in the first place. I think he must intend to retire this term after achieving his dream of becoming “PM”, because he surely knows he has shafted his support base more comprehensively than ever before in his entire career.

      I hope you’re right but I am not at all sure. Grant Robertson is an idiot, Twyford is a hideous snob but Parker is astute. He knew exactly the right response to Donald Trump’s announcement re the TPPA. I think a Parker led Labour would survive comfortably until 2020…after that I wouldn’t make a bet other than to say Bridges wouldn’t win against Parker. (Judith would though.)

  The expressions and the body language is amazing to watch let alone the words from Jones.
  
  I suspect that there is plenty of scrapping going on.
  I would guess that this announcement was made because the Greens have issued an ultimatum to the COL. Do this or we are movin on. The whole presentation in the video points directly at that sort of action. The only one smiling is Shaw with supercilious smile. Jones hides his face in a face wipe and his words are just mindless crap and he has an expression the doesn’t hide his telling porkies given this an about face to his previous position. Megan Woods looks like she has swallowed a stinking turd and Jacinda ain’t that Happy. All in all a Green fiasco I think.

Behold, the very reason foreign corporates wanted the ability to sue the New Zealand Government (during the TPP negotiations).

An unelected, cobbled-together shambles of an administration unilaterally and with little mandate or consultation vows to ban all future oil & gas exploration. I actually think this might be stupidity on an unprecedented level in recent NZ history.

Foreign capital will be looking very carefully but also cannily at this nation right now and it’s just heartbreaking.

Some (like me) will optimistically think gravity and laws of nature will assert themselves and all will be well in a year or two. Sadly, some will decide to withdraw and come back in a few years to buy up cheap from the smouldering ruins.

Seen it before.

Who can forget Lange saying ‘I need New Zealanders to understand the enormity of the situation we find ourselves in’ or similar words.

Jacinda looks terrible. The words ‘wan’ and ‘drawn’ were made for the way she appears. Babies in utero do not like stress or travelling. God forbid.

  I want to know why she isn’t taking the full 26 weeks parental leave that her government pushed for and made law when they took office. Surely it’s a little bit hypocritical to not do so? Her workplace Minister Lees-Galloway should be having a quiet word to her. It was he who said “The Government is committed to giving children the best start in life and longer paid parental leave is just the first step in that direction”. All we need is a petition with 1% of the population to get the Barque Gas Prospect underway potentially creating 6000 jobs and $32 billion in royalties. Just think North Otago could be a success story like Taranaki and this government is all about the regions. Some of the royalties can go towards cleaning our waterways and towards the carbon neutral target. We won’t even have to start importing gas in 2028!
Cindy will stop half way through child birth to meet the hairy arsed petition presentation on parliament steps.
There will then be a 7am announcement the following day at a Polyrech in Oamaru that it’s all on.

        So, an end to oil and gas exploration from 2030. Consistent with the government’s policy to move to carbon zero. But, it’s twelve years away, man. Plenty of time for your mob to get back in and change the policy. But that’s not what they do, is it? You I and both know that next time National is in power they will happily run with whatever policies Labour has introduced – see Familes, Working for; Scheme, Emissions Trading; and Loans, Interest-free for Students.
        As for the travel, I have already said that I don’t know the itinerary or passenger numbers. It is entirely possible that a commercial flight would have been more carbon-efficient. But I’m not sure that you are seriously suggesting that our PM should not represent us overseas because you are worried about her carbon footprint.

To my mind the biggest beat up of the Commonwealth Games has been the overreacting to the less than impeccable spur of the moment behaviour of Sam Gaze towards Anton Cooper after an hour and a half of gut busting mountain bike racing.
These two guys are both Kiwis and probably see each other all the time for years, having come first & second in the last Commonwealth Games. It was obvious when they were being interviewed the reporters were trying to drive a wedge between them by asking leading questions of Cooper.
Gaze flew off the handle over some technicality, thought better of it & apologised, first to Cooper & then to all and sundry. He was fined a paltry ammount by the bike people, which reflected the seriousness they saw in the incident.
No drugs, no sandpaper, no fisticuffs.
No suspension, move on.

    The cost of investigating and clearing up after crime is huge. And so is the cost of prosecuting crime.
    
    Most people in prison have many convictions and have probably committed many more offenses, so paying to keep them in prison is good value for money.

      Funny mandk as we have been informed from those who know the truth of this issue it takes a tremendous number of conviction to finally get locked up. All be it for the minimal sentence set down resulting in stuff all time being served.
      It was funny watching Davis walk into the trap of acknowledging their catch and release policy so expect that to come up again in OQT. Sadly that won’t be until May day(May 1st) which is that most significant date for some dictatorial nations.

Just a thought. Will the ban on oil & gas include LPG.

Think of the households with appliances that run on gas.

Also we have heaps of petrol driven vehicles in NZ.
Many of these are second hand dungers as Labours traditional voters are not wealthy.

Just cannot see the above being able to afford battery powered vehicles so I suspect the Luddites want us to ride bikes.

I eagerly await the next political poll as going by recent conversations with complete strangers our COL is going to get a mighty kick in the arse.

  The reality here is that wealthy people will quickly switch to electric vehicles which until 2021 will not pay any RUC. So wealthy people get to use the roads (tax free) that are paid for by low income people who can’t afford a fuel efficient vehicle.
  
  The unintended consequences of poorly though out policy.
  
  Oh and lets not forget the irony that Jacinda is spinning around in a Tesla (paying no road tax) while smacking her voters with more petrol tax because they can’t afford a fuel efficient vehicle let alone a Tesla.

Given Shane’s regional fund, given Shane’s comments relating to oil and gas in the past and given the comment from Cam slater that Winnie managed to water down the Oil and Gas ban suggesting that labour and the greens wanted to turn the taps off now (large contract payout requirements?)
Surely if Winnie or Shane want a seat in the next parliament NZ First walking on this one piece of legislation would ensure that vote coming from the provinces.
Winnie could have said that it was a bridge too far. So I wonder if Winnie really put up much of a fight on this one. He was in the box seat after all forget any coalition agreement never bothered him before.
That is if he really is concerned about the provinces.

I see Lizzie Marvelly is seeking to continue the perpetual whine that NZers are ‘racist’ because of mispronunciation of Maori, echoing Taika Waititi.

Firstly, there is no people in the world who universally speak their language ‘properly’. Just whose version do you accept? The academics? The ‘common people’? The ‘privileged people’? The leaders? The followers? There is no possibility of anything other than a huge and wide variation in spoken language in any population.

Secondly, if anyone wants to hold as a goal a ‘pure’ language, especially spoken language, it can only be even partially achieved by restricting the ethnic identity of the population, and the spoken language, to that one ethnicity/language. That ship has sailed in entirety and forever in NZ. Not only was the choice made 200 odd years ago, I haven’t noticed Maori supporting a policy of zero immigration now, continuing to weaken native NZ ‘culture’ (which includes generations of English, British, South African, Dutch, European (not further defined), European Australian, Samoan, Cook Islands Māori, Tongan, Niuean, Chinese, Indian, Filipino, Korean, Middle Eastern/Latin American/African, Others.

It’s an absolutely certain bet to accuse people of ‘mispronunciation’, which can go on forever, having no consistent language authority or standard in the first place, let alone that human beings are incapable of such uniformity at any time. I wonder just how far Maori currently living in other countries have gone to ensure that they speak the languages of their hosts with perfect precision – or how they choose which ‘authority’ to base it on.

I most certainly do not see Taika Waitit as a ‘brave man’. I see him as someone who is completely integrated with ‘other’ culture, to the extent that he can take a minorly prominent place in it, certainly from a NZ perspective. In order to remain ‘popular’ at home and with ‘whanau’ he must engage with and perpetuate the Maori ‘narrative’ of perpetual victimhood, whining about ‘racism’ with accusations which are simply fraudulent. I certainly see him as a ‘sycophantic [Maori] nationalist’ spouting racist ingratiating platitudes.

“He, like many other Māori, has grown up in a New Zealand where the Pākehā way is the default. Pākehā have controlled the narrative, the power, the resources. They still do.”

On the one hand, 90% odd of the country not being Maori, that is a truism and not worth the breath. On the other hand, Maori have huge control of an increasing quantity and proportion of resources and all the sensory input of all NZers, all the time – and most of it malign to the 90% odd. They’re simply abusive, claiming the right to be from their history, and determined that this will persist into eternity.

Whatever ridiculous claims Maori make, or believe they have the right to make, any ‘success’ they have in the world means integrating with it – and that world is not Maori and won’t be Maori. They’re not going to do it with haka and poi; they’re not going to do it with tribal affiliation; they’re not going to do it on marae; they’re not going to do it with racist accusations of racism – however much they may force some NZers into it on a temporary basis. It is a complete fiction to suggest that they can.

I applaud people who value their native ethnicity and culture as part of their identity. I have no time for those who insist that everyone else should have to adopt that to the exclusion of their own. I have even less time for those who are simply irrational.
In the meantime, I have to agree with the eventual summation – “We’re not taking an honest look at ourselves. We’re not making progress….The truth hurts. It will also set us free. But first, it will piss us off.”

The ongoing racist Maori whining and divisiveness is doing NZ no good at all. If Taika Waititi is to be any model of ‘progress’, it lies in his integration and willingness to blend with ‘other’, taking them exactly as they come – human beings with an equal right to their own dignity and self-determination.

    Sorry, but it’s unlikely to happen. The rationale as it was explained to me, was that IF every member of (for instance) Tainui was given an equal share of what the tribe had earned or received in ‘settlement’ from the government, there would be those who would quickly spend it and be back at the same place they are at now; poor. Far better to let the tribal ‘financial experts’ invest it and acumulate it and ‘slowly’ use it to help with tribal infrastructure projects as required.
    
    Unfortunately this idealistic view fails at the hurdle of self-agrandisement which sees (again for example), Tainui tribal leaders drive around in late model vehicles and accumulating all sorts of nice trinkets while their tribe’s ‘Lower orders’ still receive government assistance, housing and almost everything else. Meremere is an example that comes readily to mind!
    
    Short of a revolt by the ‘Lower orders’, nothing is going to happen, and such is the tribal mentality that it is accepted that the ‘Tribal Leaders’ are ‘entitled’ to their cars etc as a ‘reward’ for being just that and for making the ‘serious’ decisions for the good of the tribe; decisions that only the ‘Upper Cl;ass’ know how to make, since they are the ‘educated’ ones (Even when they patently aren’t).
    
    With such an entrenched mindset as that, nothing will change.

      Well Komata that as we know would be the silliest way to try and share the windfall but the problem is that as a people they do NOTHING with it for “their” people. If they as a people by tribe or dare we say as a unified group looked at the reason that their people dominate all the wrong statistics they might understand that is “their” problem. They might then initiate a plan to help those in need by working right back their own cultural family ways to bring about change. Starting with whatever little steps are needed to make it work in such a manner that ALL their people can relate to.
      Sadly they ignore them and instead need the Government to pick up the pieces left at the bottom of so many cliffs. Instead they are managing to create a division of resources with so many additional bodies just for them in health, education, welfare and justice adding to costs with no real gains.
      Best example is what has now become a new Ministry of Far Now or Never Health that achieves nothing more than increased health costs not to mention a whole new bunch of bureaucrats. Whites need not apply to avoid disappointment of no appointments.
      Back in the day there was no issue with race for most New Zealanders where Maoris were fewer but purer and we all got along just fine. Now the bloodlines are so diluted it has swelled the numbers and along with that the demands for more “inclusion”. They have never been excluded from anything but always think that playing the race card trumps the whole deck. We would prefer that they would just start with a full deck and understand they can have or be whatever they wish in life just like everybody else. Instead they resort to the them and us mantra that is fertile ground for racism to flourish.

I have been away from KB since Tuesday due to Aucklands power problems and this has probably already been discussed but I need to vent my spleen to those who applauded Sky TVs loss of the Rugby World Cup rights. If TV Ones coverage of last nights the women’s pole vault and shot put at the Comm Games was any indicator of what we are to receive next year from Japan then God help us. It was a continuous programme of ads and Toni Street interspersed occasionally with some Comm Games footage. No continuity, no idea of who or who was not still in the running for medals. It was quite appalling.

  Been ongoing for a long time. The Nats were to useless to change the legislation covering damage after this court case so it remains and I don’t think that the Col will change it. Basically if the damage is covered by insurance the tenant walks away with no penanlty unless the damage is dekiberate. The first test of this ruling allowed a tenant to walk after their pets damaged a house despite the tenancy agreement saying no pet. The pets were kept inside and pissed and shat all over the place. It went to appeal and it was overruled because the court ruled the damage as a deliberate act.
  Been all sorts of rulings since but the greatest effect has been to up the insurance premiums which unfortunately can’t be passed onto the tenant.
  In the original case that caused the ruling the tenant had a stove fire and the insurance conpany decided to recover the money from the tenant. 18k from memory. Its dragged out for 7 years and at the end the insurance company lost but created grief and the new ruling which in turn is now costing the landlords and insurance companies a lot more money.

Landlords with any brains would evict all the scum that rent their hovels, drop them on the market and flick them off to the best bidder then let the COL house all their useless mates. For the life of me I cannot see why folk own rentals apart from greed and the hope of vast capital gain. 🙂

Means a dance teacher could be fined $2000 for using the term

  I doubt it’s true. If so it’ll be an interesting period of time coming up given they want to increase the number of registered teachers (which will be a trifle tricky when a large chunk of existing teachers lose that part of their title).
