  I would be more concerned with what’s happening over the Tasman.
  
  The ethnic mix in Melbourne is a time bomb waiting to explode. People living in what used to be up market leafy suburbs are very concerned as some neighbourhoods are turning into no go areas run by African gangs.
  
  My sister in law has just come back and was gob smacked by the aggressive activity she saw in the malls etc and suburban shopping areas.

There is a commercial playing on Radio Live at the moment encouraging listeners to put in a submission to the TWG (Tax Working Group).

In it, the scenario played out by two (mature, white) male actors runs thus: (not word for word)

‘Boy I’m sick of paying so much tax’

‘Like the tax you paid when you sold your boat?’

‘Um yeah um well’

‘And the tax you paid when you sold your two sections’

Aw well yeah but…’

You get the drift. Listen out for it.

I believe the commercial (one would assume its purpose is to drive people to MAKE a submission not ADVISE what they should write in their submission) –

1: Frames up a partisan scenario (i.e. a guy who is privileged and is complaining about paying tax when he’s already well off)

2: Clearly tries to engineer a specific response by targeting ordinary punters who wouldn’t normally give a shit by invoking a reaction using the above

3: Does not have a partner / flipside commercial that has a scenario whereby, say for argument’s sake, somebody who does not pay any tax at all, say, a career criminal complains about being hard done by, even though they have access to billions of dollars of services paid for by net tax payers.

I want to know:

Who created this commercial
What advertising company employed this person
What was their actual brief
Who approved it, and paid for it
What does Michael Cullen think of it

Five questions, one journalist. It’ll never happen.

    Well Huevon they will have done the numbers and with 15% of the population owning boats where would they find another group of this size who would actually be in a position to actually pay tax? In the end this is where the real burden of the new taxes will be felt the most with another increase in the number of neutral tax payers as a result of the grand Family Package. The substitute for the tax cuts now lost as of 1/4/18 as we see the biggest group of losers as the April fools they are.
    Funny even that equation is makes the COL look even more foolish as 50,000 children miss out being lifted out of poverty while 384,000 get more hand outs. Opposed to the 1.4 million who would now be paying less tax and being Kiwi’s feeling a little more charitable to those in need.

    Sure SR but there are so many ways to tax boat owners through a more devious indirect method. We still imagine that all road taxes collected on motor vehicles is used for roads yet the COL think it can build train sets with it. So where do you think the new petrol tax in Auckland collected from boat owners (where the single biggest boat numbers are) will be spent?
    There is nothing stopping such and ideology driven mob using boating taxes for cleaning up water ways as an excuse for say a boat licence fee + GST naturally. Rates starting with non motor boats and graduated up in horsepower steps not forgetting the Green Gangs kayaks.

  This can go too far and probably has in this instance especially as it would add distress to his wider family. I made myself unpopular with a posting in the same vein on an old fashioned newsgroup. Guy was to be sentenced for commercial quantity cannabis cultivation and threatened a hunger strike if imprisoned. I thought it was great news for the long suffering taxpayer – Corrections would save on food costs in the short term and custody costs in the medium term. That comment did not go down well.
  So even if this is SST’s sentiment it is one best kept to themselves, especially as SST and co is about to have a big fight on its hands over Labour’s penal policy.

      Half the reason for the high costs in staff are the huge staffing levels required to keep the peace in prisons.
      
      If prisoners “knew their place” rather than “knew their rights”, it would be a bit eeasier to keep them under control with less staff.

Amazed that Clare Curren appears to have the so called media in her hands as she explains why she was never wrong and Carol Hirshfeld is only in the poop because of her own failure and nothing to do with Curren.
Curren is a nasty piece of work – even Trevor must have been very drunk to “look”at her” – probably only the once as understand they got caught in the act.

Which means she already has plenty of contacts and knows well how to cultivate them…and keep on asking the right questions that will slowly tease the story out for maximum damage to Curran and the government. There is nothing reporters love more than a cover up scandal, where all the hard work is already done for them! ?
      
      Lee has sure improved since her gaffs in the ill-fated Mt Albert by-election in 2009. Mind you, she is helped by Curran’s arrogance, incompetence and stupidity. Those of us who encountered her propaganda and “moderation” when she ran Labour’s I’ll-fated website, Red Alert knew it was only a matter of time before she got into trouble…we just never thought it would be this soon! I went with family to have a pre-dinner beer yesterday at a local brew bar. I was told I had to have a meal with my beer. EACH beer. Either two entrees, a main course, or 8 of the excellent finger food items they sell. This is a holiday centre currently packed with people for the last time before the weather turns. The sun was shining, the sea was warm, and some idiot told me that I couldn’t have a nice beer with my family without having to stuff my face. I can see absolutely no reason for this restriction. I hasten to say that I am not critical of the bar itself. They have been told that they could lose their licence if people take their drinks to an immediately adjacent park instead of being crammed into their deservedly popular bar, so understandably they were being cautious about Easter trading. The last Government chickened out of this issue by trying to devolve responsibility to local councils. Isn’t it time we recognised Easter for what it is? A public holiday for all with religious significance for some. If you don’t want to buy something on Easter Sunday, don’t buy it. If you don’t think you should be able to have a drink without a meal, buy a meal to go with your drink. But don’t treat me like some naughty child who needs to be told what to do.

      They have 7 seats allocated for Maori, which in an MMP parliament holds a significant amount of power. Voting for a Maori based party would allow Maori to have a say at the top table, and the Maori Party were very aware of that. National knew that as well, which is why they chose to work with the Maori party and saw them as a viable coalition partner, even when they didn’t even need them to gain a majority.
      
      What did Labour offer Maori again? More benefits? Meanwhile the Maori voice is lost in the caucus, because they are now a part of the whole, not a stand alone voice!
      
      Meanwhile, the top two positions in the National Caucus are held by people with Maori ancestry.
      
      Honestly, when will Maori finally be sick and tired of being taken for granted by a Labour party that simply wants to consign them to the role of vote delivering beneficiaries?

        Think back ROW. One of the benefits touted for the Maori seats and MMP was that it would give Maori an independent voice – which is basically what you are saying above.
        
        MMP did deliver an independent voice to Maori, and the Maori Party used that to good advantage, even while their percentage of the vote in Maori electorates was being eroded by Labour.
        
        Now all those platitudes about Maori having an independent voice are meaningless. Since the last election Maori have lost their voice, and we now see the most senior Labour Maori member backing away from his heritage to tow the party line.
        
        If the very premise upon which MMP was implemented no longer exists, then the time has come to dismantle MMP and replace it with another another electoral model. Our MMP model was and remains apartheid in nature, and this should not be the case in a nation like ours.
        
        Personally, I believe we should have a 99 seat Parliament. We should begin the process by culling 21 underperforming list MP’s – God knows, there are plenty to choose from !

    There was an article the other day bemoaning the ‘Maori pay gap’. Blaming all the usual non-reasons, of course. My theory is that Maori are poorly paid on average because many do not do what is best for them – they are anti-individualist, and liable to act how they believe their peers think they should, which is often belligerent and scathing of academic success.
    
    It also explains why they keep voting Labour.

      Maori average IQ measured on an international comparative basis put them about 1 std deviation below the euro NZeder. That class are not likely to finish college and represent the lowest 16% of Kiwi euro society. How can Maori then achieve any better?

      dubya, I have in the past worked with both Islanders and Maoris. In one instance the Island chaps were happy to work their day out and pick up their reward on payday. The Maori workers on the other hand were union men one day, and the next were the boss’s men. They seemed to be fair weather types driven by whatever issue affected them on a particular day. A couple of them seemed to have an endless supply of dead ‘Uncles’ which required lengthy tangi-leave. I can only recount this situation, but speaking to other employers this is not that unusual.

        Ha Ha I had a bloke who disappeared for three weeks on Tangi Leave as his ‘Aunty’ had died up North.
        I phoned him after two weeks and some woman jumped onto the phone and threatened to get a lawyer onto me. A sneaky Facebook search showed the funeral was well over and he was actually in Australia.
        I spoke to my lawyer who told me this sort of situation is all too common but to tread carefully because Employment Court would almost inevitably rule in his favour. (He also advised me on another way to ‘skin the cat’ so to speak..)
        *Oh and it turned out it wasn’t his real Aunt after all…

      Maori have the ability and the resources to be doing the paying, rather than working for somebody else.
      
      I know Maori who are bloody good farm managers and farm workers – they get good pay because they use their initiative, no doubt bolstered by endless contributions of resources from successive governments !
      
      And in the farm environment they are willing to get their hands dirty to get the job done !

  Labour lost the Maori vote when Peter Sharples and Tariana Turia mobilised support away from them.
  There is a growing well-educated population of middle-class Maori who are not falling for the old platitudes from Labour.
  If Labour fails to perform for them, these folks will again look elsewhere.
  
  It’s the PI vote that remains solidly Labour.

    With respect Maggy, the Māori Party lost support because Underpants Morgan was party leader. He has no respect in Māoridom either.
    The other problem was the Māori Party endorsement by the Ngaruawahia truck driver. Māori are more able to think for themselves than their ‘cash for appearances’ king gives them credit for.
    I think the Māori Party have got the message that there are some people you just don’t need on your side.

Its also time to get rid of the extra pay for workers on statutory days.
Many bars and restuarants are closed as they cant afford to pay the extra.
More proof that if the govt and union get involved workers are the ones that lose out. As they earn nothing on those days.

    The day in lieu is only if they work the stat day.
    If an employee works a stat day they get time and a half and a day in lieu.
    If the employee does not work they get ordinary time for the hours the would normally work if the day was not a holiday.
    So, if the shop/cafe opens, the wage bill is 2.5 times higher than a normal day, and if the business closes they miss out on revenue.
    It is up to the employer to choose which suits best, but s/he should consult with staff as they cannot be forced to work a stat holiday.

  Submissions closed on Good Friday and will now be before the select committee until August. It is a devious means to try yet again for compulsory unionism but there is a sliver of hope with worker rights to choose covered by some other heavy weight laws.

    The rationale for public broadcasting is that the privately-owned, commercially-driven alternative in practice serves up “lowest common denominator” content as the primary offering. If you look, for example, in the US, their news media has gone down hill dramatically from, say 40 years ago. Major networks such as FOX, or MSNBC and CNN are deliberately tribal, and eschew any attempt at balance or objectivity. That’s fair enough in so far as any one media outlet is entitled to its editorial slant, but if in that collective process nuance and also important but non-commercially viable niches are ignored, then there is a rationale for public broadcasting. Not just in news, but in programming. The ad-free ABC in Australia, for example, is outstanding. But it costs.
    
    The problem comes that left-wing activists are not happy to leave it at that. Instead, they view public broadcasting as necessary to “even up” the propaganda battle that the VRWC is waging upon the workers and their interests through commercially-driven media. Sounds far-fetched, I know, but here, let Chris Trotter tell you how he and the likes of Curran view the rationale for public broadcasting:
    
    That was how Labour rolled back in the 1930s. Its socialist leaders understood what today’s Labour politicians do not. That the media – be it print, electronic and/or digital – is crucial to the success or failure of any government; and that without the support of at least a very substantial fraction of that media, the government’s ability to implement its policies will be severely compromised.
    
    Savage was well aware that his right-wing opponents could rely upon the unwavering support of the daily newspapers. That is why he was so keen for the new Labour Government to take control of the airwaves and appoint someone he could trust to run them. The Left needed to even-up the odds.

While on here yesterday, I looked up what percentage Winston First actually got, I couldn’t remember if it was 6%, 7% or 5.something%. My quick “2017 NZ election” google search revealed a Wikipedia page with one little pic underneath of the walking, talking, breathing dentistry-bill with caption “winner.” Amazing how the left have already sanitized the history of the event. In 20 years the teacher’s curriculum will have changed it so that the Airhead beat Bill by 20% for self-assurance. Then some industrious student will investigate it for a masters thesis and prove that Bill English actually beat the Airhead by 6-7%, only to be shafted by Winnie, who rorted the democratic process. Naturally, that kid will be banned from all uni campuses for hate speech and labelled a fascist, with his thesis completely rejected as a fantasy by clones of Steve Maharey and Bryan Gould.

Further example of Labour’s ‘honesty’ – or more to the point completely fraudulent PR spin on the truth, including by the MSM – can be found in the NZH this morning – announcement/headline “Roberston to check out how to host games”.

You have to say he IS being transparent:

“…he is making no commitment for New Zealand to host or even bid to host for the next unallocated hosting rights in 2026 or 2030… I’m certainly not committing to that … But I’m certainly not committing to us hosting it or even bidding for it…”

The truth is, Roberston wants to go and is going to the Gold Coast and/or Commonwealth Games for a holiday. I’m sure a lot of people in Labour need one but I don’t know that he needs it more than some others.

In order to make it acceptable to the public that he swan off to the Gold Coast, as probably a lot of people would like to do, he says, “one of the things I want to do WHEN I go to the Gold Coast …”

I know they all do it, all the time, but it’s just a junket with a fraudulent veneer, typical of everything else Labour do. Clearly, he’s very laid back about the NZ economy – none of that ‘nose to the grindstone’ for him.

      Housing costs are theoretical for bystanders but not buyers. We are a very small country with our supply lines I suspect well tied down by hopeful monopolists. Building costs are what the market will bear. Also we are living through an asset bubble in global house prices caused by excessive central bank credit creation. It’s a dream until the money supply is reigned in for house prices to get back to even 6 x income. I sure that buildings costs are priced to reflect the asset bubble selling prices. The rule in the market is buy cheap sell dear. It would appear absurd for the components of a house to only add up to ½ the market selling price.

        If you can recall (well maybe you can’t with demntia), 9 years ago NZ was losing a plane load of people each week. A shaming statistic that was the reality of the two previous govt.’s.
        At that time house prices went well down and indeed there were empty house all over the place and tenants became rarer than rocking horse shit in many area’s.
        The Nats managed to turn that failure of the previous 18 tears around and people started coming home. The movement became a torrent and was boosted by other immigrants, but still the biggest number is returning Kiwi’s. Many in our area reclaimed their houses that they had rented out a low rates because they couldn’t sell the.
        
        The so called shortage of houses has only been around for 3 years and then it is a false construct of the Labour Party. More it was a shortage of decent tenants with the scum being booted out to live in a hedge till they learnt some respect.
        We still are not short of houses. We only have 2.7 persons per dwelling. compare that to say Mumbai. I know we don’t like that but the reality is that we are not short of housing. We just have a lot of people who don’t like living together. ( I’m one).
        Of course our success in tourism helps. Airbnb and Book a batch have an effect but without them out tourists would be sleeping on the beeches.
        
        This govt. will stop house building in its tracks. I am already aware of people who are slowing their building programs. The just think that there ain’t going to be a market.

New Zealand is in serious trouble. We have an incompetent and rudderless government with no credibility. We have lacklustre opposition which appears to have been penetrated by the Chinese Communist Party. We have 500 Maori claims to the whole New Zealand coastline coming down the pike which have the potential to blow communities apart and cause civil disorder. All this on top of the immense social and infrastructure pressures generated by excessive low-skilled immigration to bump up GDP figures. It is a deeply worrying recipe for disaster.

Palestinians of Gaza planned a protest at the border (involving a tent settlement until May 15) over their refugee status (most of the Palestinains in Gaza are 1948 era regfugees).

Israel told them not to go to close to the border fence, or they would be killed (they sent in hundreds of snipers). Two picking parsley from a field near the fence were hit by a tank shell, those killed since unarmed men in Gaza territory shot by snipers.

Reminds me more of unarmed protestors shot in the streets of Damascus some years ago, than justified self defence by Israel.

Naturally there has been criticism, but of all people it has come from Erdogan of Turkey – who criticised Israel over the occupation of Palestinian land and killing of unarmed civilians, this while Turkey is occupying parts of Syria and shelling the Kurdish town of Afrin.

Tough neighbourhood, the only place in the world where governments supply weapons to their favourite armed group of militants.

    But there seems little ground to reason with when the abusers either deny that they have written something or (in Griff’s case) declare openly that the intent is to destroy my reputation.

        I don’t think anyone should take online disagreements to another level that has real-world consequences. So, if what you say is true, and someone really did put a notice about you on the St Albans church door, then I don’t approve of it.
        
        But I think you need to reassess the way you comment here, and in particular, the way you interact with Maggy – who uses her real name and is potentially affected by real-world consequences based on what you say about her. I’m not sure if you realise, but what may seem to you like harmless banter comes across as something much worse.
        
        You could try a commenting style like Mikenmild’s? Many people disagree with his position on various issues, but he sometimes has interesting things to say – particularly regarding military history and Official Information Act matters, where he seems to have particular knowledge.
        
        Of course, you’re free to ignore me, and carry on doing your thing. But eventually the legal chickens will come home to roost. Up to you really.

The World Bank is telling Australia that it should consider abolishing three-month work permits for backpackers, and give more temporary work to Pacific Third Worlders.

NZ’s in the same boat, with white backpackers working in horticulture and tourism, but Melanesians and foreign Polynesians as well.

There are hidden dividends in the backpacker trade. Backpackers increase awareness of New Zealand in the the First World markets they come from. Second, when they are much older they might well return to New Zealand as nostalgic, wealthier tourists.

What an uproar there would be if the World Bank were to tell Australia and NZ to shut down temporary work for brown people to create more temporary jobs for white working tourists.

So, fuck the World Bank and its meddling bureaucrats.

It’s no joke how much data your internet service provider can collect about you. A new service from Cloudflare aims to change that.

These days, you may wish you had a magic switch you could flip to keep your data more secure.

The misuse of Facebook user data by Cambridge Analytica is only the latest consumer privacy flap to create outrage. Remember the Equifax hack? That affected more than 230 million people. And in 2017, US lawmakers reversed Obama-era rules that forbade your internet service provider from making money off your web-browsing history.

Suddenly internet users are realizing that their internet service providers have been amassing huge troves of data on all the websites they visit. People aren’t happy about that, and it seems there’s nothing we can do about it.

So a magic switch would be nice. And that’s essentially what website performance and security giant Cloudflare set out to create with its new tool called 1.1.1.1. Announced Sunday, 1.1.1.1 aims to speed up your internet connection and make it impossible for your ISP to collect your browsing history. That’s big news at a time when consumers are demanding more control of their data.

“If you switch to 1.1.1.1, then that ledger of where you’re going online is not being kept by your ISP,” Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, said in an interview.

With 1.1.1.1, internet users can let Cloudflare take over the process of resolving requests to the Domain Name System, also known as DNS. That’s the crucial process of matching up a URL — like facebook.com — with a website’s true location on the internet, called an IP address (for Facebook, that’s 157.240.18.35)….’
