It was in the offing he was going to pull something while the world was distracted by the Skripal poisonings but I thought it might be a border incursion rather than notching up the arms race. The other morning on the AM Show they had a lady on from some organization that makes lunches for kids who go to school without.
Last year she made lunches for 27 schools and this year it has risen to 56 schools.
This got me thinking, what happens to the poor kids when there’s about 12 weeks holidays a year and no access to these lunches..?

      Always a loop hole artemisia… budgetors in the South Auckland area at least are booked months in advance and are over stretched. The vast majority are volunteers and are often beneficiaries themselves.
      
      We are told to take the clients “word” on where their money went. So a good case manager will “itemise” in their notes what the client has “stated” in regards to their spending.
      
      And for the record, I’m all for kids getting an Easter egg. But when you see people buying $10-15 on one Chocolate item and there’s 4 or 5 of them in the basket, I cant see that Easter egg filling that tummy over the weekend.

  This unmasks an issue that the government really should address:-
  
  Breeding, but not feeding !
  
  Unfortunately organisations like this are, unwittingly perhaps, helping remove the responsibility for parents to feed their offspring. Whilst there is no doubt that some families are in difficulty and finding it hard to provide children with even one reasonable daily meal, the bigger issue is that the very same families continue to breed and continue to increase pressures on these organisations, and government, to service basic parental responsibilities.
  
  If a parent cannot feed his/her own child, then I believe that the child should be removed by the state and placed somewhere better.
  
  Unfortunately, as we have seen in countless third world countries, this will not stop them from bringing yet another mouth to feed in to world !

    I think most of us have noticed that the vast majority of the poor in this country are from sexist Polynesian cultures.
    Most of their men demand that their women do not use contraception.
    How else is a man to keep his wife/wives dependant on him without half a dozen or more little kids clinging to her skirts?
    Polynesian women have told me how they got pregnant because their husband threw out their “medicine” or spent all their money at the snooker hall so they had no money to get some.
    Fortunately in NZ they have the options of abortion or sterilization, which many of them take.
    In their homelands, they can get none of these.
    Maori women are brainwashed against using contraception,even though it is available.

  My grandchildren go to school for breakfast, they do not ‘need’ to and I am note sure that they should do, except it is good that no-one should feel ‘shame’, which might be felt be some otherwise, my lot go because their mother won’t let them have sugar on weetbix at home.
  
  I am sure that they and others like them scew the stats.
  
  They are from a two parent, non beneficiary family, who have a cooked meal every night. Plus all manner of extravagances.

    I hear what you say about skewing the stats, and this is a very valid point.
    
    My grand daughter is out of the same mold as yours. Interestingly she rather drinks milk or juice when she comes to visit grandad, and has not yet
    discovered the “joys” of Coca Cola !
    
    However when measured against the governments measures, she is effectively “living in poverty.”
    
    She also has her own Air New Zealand airpoints card, and has already qualified for a free trip !

On Claire Curran – she’s got form in getting people fired due to her conflicts of interest:

      He is private citizen.
      As far as I am aware he has never created a situation which has forced a Public Servant out of his/her job.

        No, it is not irrelevant. It is because Benson-Pope held Public Office and had taken a stance on upholding the values of traditional Marriage that his private life was exposed. As he was Associate Minister of Education, it was relevant to reveal the accusations of violence and sexual harassment when he was a school teacher had been levelled against him.

In Parliament this week the Government was showed up as shit useless the result of which is their cheerleaders ? have gone quiet. Twitford wins the prize for me. That guy has no understanding at all of his portfolios and when he has read the notes in front of him he has nothing left but to repeat them. Even the speaker pulled him up on this on Thursday.

Miraculous Monday – Trade War Ends A Day After It Starts

It”s a miracle!

Or so they will have you believe. Just one market day after Trump declares a Trade War on China, team Trump is claiming victory in that Trade War with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin saying that “the U.S. can reach an agreement with China that will avert the need for President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on at least $50 billion of goods from the country.”  “We’re having very productive conversations with them,” Mnuchin said on “Fox News Sunday,” when discussing talks with China. “I’m cautiously hopeful we reach an agreement.”

An optimist would say Trump’s threats worked and China backed down but a realist might say China’s threat to retaliate worked and Trump backed down because the net effect here is there will be no sanctions placed against China and Wilbur Ross is already running around claiming it will be a victory if China promises to buy some LNG (liquefied natural gas) from the US to help balance the trade deficit.

China, of course, doesn’t care who they buy LNG from and, like oil, it’s fungible – so it doesn’t matter who we sell it to, there’s a GLOBAL supply and demand picture that sets prices so if we sell more to China, we will sell less to someone else and not one job will be gained and not one net import/export Dollar will have shifted other than on the balance sheet with China.  ..’

      I don’t think any of us really knows, tbh. The Catholic Church doesn’t subscribe to the protestant idea of being “saved” once and for all when you accept Christ. Our idea of salvation is more like something that has to be worked on day-by-day. As Paul said in Philippians, “continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling”.

It’s only Calvinists who affirm unambiguously that those who have truly been justified and declared righteous by faith will see their salvation through to its final completion. And good Calvinism treats a thoughtful and considered profession of faith at face value unless there are good and visible reasons to the contrary, and never presumes who outside of the visible church may or may not be the elect who will find salvation through Christ.

      The mine re-entry is probably legally hazardous under current law. In a litigious situation that could include anyone who breached a reasonable duty of care by recommending or promoting re-entry to a proven dangerous site.
      
      The danger is obvious: the proof of safe is not possible. Wishful thing is not sufficient.
      
      If it gets near the Courts and Ministerial responsibility is involved, including personal liability, it will be a canfull of constitutional worms.

    The latest bushwalking and mountain bike track has been opened in memory of the Pike River Mine tragedy. Not only the track opened but a memorial hut set high into the side of the mountain overlooking the valley where the mine is situated was airlifted into place by DOC at a considerable cost. Was this hut and the helicopter used to lift it paid out of the $23m allocated to the Pike River Westport office?

This is what happens when a naive, inexperienced teenager gets too much power. David Hogg is a teenager whom the Left have anointed as the go-to spokesperson of the student survivors of the latest shooting. He does things like call the NRA child killers and says politicians are bitches of the NRA (and worse).

Lately he tweeted out his disappointment that no college he applied to would accept. Fox host Laura Ingraham made fun of it in a tweet and Hogg called for a boycott of her advertisers, many of whom have pulled out.

So yes – this little shit has too much power. He got offended over a tweet (which Laura has since apologized for, even though she shouldn’t have had to) and so now he is destroying her livelihood – all because he took offense over her making fun of the fact that he hasn’t got accepted into any colleges (which he brought up in a tweet himself).

LOL. I find it difficult to believe that John Roughan lives in the same universe as the rest of the world. He’s always filtered everything through rose-coloured glasses but this most recent justification and celebration of, and argument for continuing, dominance of pretended democracy by the ‘elite bubble’ is simply astonishing.

He says:
“Wellington is a wonderful place…They are all in politics or the public service, or they are lobbying those who are, or they are in the media…New Zealand is often called an “intimate democracy”. That is a good thing. On one level it means the great majority of people feel engaged in its government and know their opinions matter.”

Really? He means, the ‘great majority’ of politicians, public service, and lobbyists. It’s not the ‘great majority’ of the population – because politicians, public service, and lobbyist groups don’t ‘represent’ the views of the majority of the population, only their own views supposedly for the ‘good’ of everyone else.

He says, “On another level it means people in powerful or influential roles get to know each other and can work with those whose professionalism, skills and judgment they respect.”

Exactly. They don’t care about the ‘great unwashed’ who comprise the majority of the population – who undeniably have no ‘power’ or ‘influence’ and apparently neither have any professionalism, skills, or judgement in his opinion. The elite bubble must be able to reign unfettered.

“The intimacy in the capital can engender resentment and suspicion among those outside that maybe their opinions don’t matter so much, but they are wrong, I think.”

Yes. The world over, the ‘intimacy’ of the elite bubble is engendering active resentment and suspicion – in fact, outright rebellion – from those who want their views taken into account. Roughan can think they this is ‘wrong’ as much as he likes but that’s what is evident the world over; violently so.

“We get better government, better information, better politics and better decisions because we are a small, well educated, accessible democracy.”

Well, we would get better government if we were an ‘accessible democracy’. Unfortunately, we’re not. We’re governed by the ‘elite bubble’ who are totally focused on keeping their power to themselves, especially the MSM.

The saddest thing about his writing is that he clearly genuinely believes what he’s saying. I don’t doubt he’s one of those who was shocked by Brexit, Trump, the Italian elections, and the rise of ‘populism’ – which is simply the will of the people – the latter supposedly being uncivilised savages who can’t string a coherent thought together. Can you get any more patronising?

Jacinda gets worse by the day. I thought H1 was embarrassingly crass at the best of times, but Jacinda is developing it into an art form.

Fancy going over to the Queen’s home country, stating clearly that the people of NZ are fond of her and don’t want to become a ‘republic’, but Jacinda expects us to get rid of the Queen in Jacinda’s lifetime. Of course, it would be an article for the Guardian.

I note also they’re quoting her question to Obama, of how he ‘dealt with the guilt’. I can think of lots of reasons why she may feel guilty, given the blatant dishonesty the Labour Party are guilty of, particularly her as leader.

However, I don’t think I’ve seen anything as ludicrous as equating Obama’s commitment (or not) to ‘family life’ with the mental, physical, and emotional demands of female pregnancy, birth, and motherhood, the latter certainly in the first instance.

It’s like it’s a choice of some kind that she CAN make – or a trade-off she SHOULD make – all other women along with her, by implication – that irrespective of any ‘damage’ she does to herself or her child, it’s all okay if ‘she does her best’ to stay PM.

And then, of course, they got on to her buying underwear and being accosted by ‘older men’ hanging out there.

Fair enough, but I think you are blaming the wrong thing with religion for its continued criminalisation, including Parliament rejecting Michael Laws’ bill some 20+ years ago. Unlike the USA, the NZ religious lobby has little clout, as evidenced by the passage of the gay marriage legislation. Instead, it is the natural politicians’ fear of taking a controversial stand that’s could be hung around their neck at a future date.
        
        Is the same with the fear of decriminalising drugs. Who wants to be seen to be making drugs more freely available to the youthful offspring of middle New Zealand, irrespective of the data and previous failed outcomes of prohibition and the war on drugs?!
        
        Also, as a Calvinist I am wary of the illegitimate encroachment of historic Catholicism or Islam into our mutually-shared public space. But Catholics and Muslims, like Calvinists, atheists, greenies, blondes and left-handers all have a right to legitimately influence that public space by the propagation of ideas, their vote, and also being elected to political office.
        
        Also, there seems little alternative to making assisted suicide a conscience matter, given the current legal status quo. Even granting a binding referendum for us all to vote on would still be a mater of our MPs’ collective conscience in the first instance. But their conscience is informed by a wide variety of sources – life experience, family, friends, discussions with constituents, science, listening to the medical fraternity, often illogical intuition and gut instinct, inherited, imbibed or formally-adopted codes of morality and ethics, and yes, in some case religion.
        
        So with such a large number of variables influencing the conscience of each of the 120 MPs, why make such an issue of the relatively small number of committed Catholic or conservative Protestant representatives? To be frank, I think your analysis is skewed, and you are using it to have a bitch about something you don’t like (fair enough), but also erroneously imagine has more influence over your peronal life, and the public square than it really does.

        Because the effect is cumulative. Every one of those qualities you listed would be natural to someone who has their moral compass defined by belief in a deity.
        
        Conservative, successful, well-connected & bound together by the tenets of the religion they were indoctrinated with as children they march in lockstep with the thinking of their church.
        
        They are a bloc of 30% of the electorate. They are entitled to exist. I am entitled to oppose them & expose them for the religio-conservative, self-centred nuts that they are.

        But the non-nominal religious don’t make up 30% of the NZ population. Instead it is about 5%. Unless you are seriously suggesting that it is only, or even primarily the religious who are opposed to assisted suicide. Many atheists and agnostics are reticent and unconvinced there is not a “slippery slope” that will result in the euthanising of the disabled and elderly against their wishes.
        
        Sorry, nasska, but I’d suggest that is projection in your part, stemming from a refusal to accept that an opinion other than your own in the issue can be justified by reason, impuricism and common sense. And atheists call theists presumptuous and arrogant…

Mount Roskill loses its Easter cross for good

An “iconic” cross has been removed from Auckland’s Mount Roskill/Puketāpapa after lighting up every Easter for nearly 60 years.

The borough’s former mayor David Hay has slammed the decision, saying the structure was part of the area’s local identity.

“It is disappointing that our elected representatives have voted to stop what has been part of our heritage in Mount Roskill for so long,” he said.

REINZ welcomes the bright-line passing its third reading, but more supply still needed

The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) welcomes the fact that the Taxation (Annual Rates for 2017–18, Employment and Investment Income, and Remedial Matters) Bill passed its third reading in parliament last night in relation to the bright-line test. However, the housing shortage still remains an issue that needs solving immediately.
