Following the revelation in the Election Campaign that Winston had been overpaid superannuation for 7 years, the media was full of stories about how Winston was initiating legal proceedings against Journalists and high ranking members of National, including Bill English and Paula Bennett.
This went on for weeks, and had a very tangible effect on the coalition negotiations, and was highlighted as a possible factor in NZ First going with Labour. It certainly contributed to a certain amount of tension between National and Winston.
It was often mentioned in the Media at that time as well.
So I find myself stunned that yesterday, Winston not only withdrew the Lawsuit, but actually paid costs to those he instigated proceedings against.
What is particularly and gallingly evident is how this has been reported in the media, in that it mostly hasn’t been. I can only find one article on Stuff, and there has been no mention on TV and Radio.
Given the implications and the effects of the Winston initiated process, this should be reported in far greater depth than it was, but then it would be contrary to the MSM narrative, wouldn’t it?

    Doesn’t Winston’s Lawyer somebody Henry sound as though he has had lessons from Luigi Peters on how to avoid questions and bullshit. His slow voice tones could be Peters.
    Could be more fun to come as Peters fails to ignite the media any more so he and his Lawyer keep trying hard.
    Has cost them real money so pay for the work he made a number of people do for his edification.
    I see that he has let the media off – that’s a laugh for a start with the to reprobates concerned whom you would have trouble ever believing.

      Yes, I thought the same when I heard Brian Henry being interviewed (or having a verbal exchange as they described it) by Espiner on Red Radio.
      
      Points to note:
      1. The legal action is still possible, because he (Henry) hasn’t yet decided who they are filling claims against, if indeed he does;
      2. Henry himself admitted on the radio that it was Peters, himself who told the world about his superannuation problem. Apparently, he did this to mitigate a possible story he had become aware of. So, no damage was done to Peters reputation or his privacy by anyone, but Peters;
      3. Any action being taken by Peters is a civil one under the “tort of breach of privacy”, not the Privacy Act.
      
      So although, Peters lawyer is telling the world the case had not been dropped. There is no case, just Pest for all Reasons/Seasons and his lawyer threatening on the airwaves that there might be legal action action the named National Party MPs and staffers.
      
      All that is left to say, what a pair of low life’s Peters & his lawyer are & to think Peters is Deputy PM.

        You spotted it. Henry admitted clearly that:
        “Peter’s who released the info about his superannuation at the end of August 2017. This was in to mitigate in advance of a story that his client was aware of because he had been contacted about”.
        
        Second
        Proceedings have not been initiated against anyone.
        The claim is Peters’ privacy was breached, this begs 2 questions, what was the extent of the privacy breach; and by whom?
        
        Given what I heard on the radio, I suspect there is no case against the National 6 that would stick. However, for costs of $10k plus Henry’s cost it seems an expensive way to exact utu.

        Yesterday it was reported Twatford had received a report from MBIE that some his modelling was wrong & the homes would probably be unaffordable.
        
        Well, this is not a sucker punch for Twitty Twatford, remember he has told us that one of his problems to getting KiwiBuild going has been the RMA. So, guess what is being worked on at the moment both for KiwiBuild & to give ministerial authority for LRT in Auckland.
        
        Because it is the CoL guess what, the Greens & NZ First will swallow Twitford’s version of the RMA. What is more Twitford’s version will make Nick SMith’s version look democratic, Twitford’s version is anything but!
        
        This will be part of a package including announcements about light rail for Auckland.

  Just to be pedantic, the discovery process he went through was pre-proceeding, and in such a case the Judge has the power to order costs to be paid against the person seeking the order, so the fact that he has paid costs is neither here nor there. Whether he goes to the next stage, and issues proceedings against people who have been identified as a result of the discovery process, is more interesting. He was boasting that he had been given more information than he needed by those against whom the discovery orders had been made, but it has yet to translate into a filed claim, and despite what Brian Henry said to Radio NZ, it can’t be that hard to formulate.

    When the Court orders costs to be paid by the plaintiff (especially in the preliminary stage of the matter), that could be interpreted as a strong signal by the Judge, that the plaintiff is probably pissing into the wind.

      Not at all; it is specifically provided for in the Civil Procedure Rules. The Judge is unlikely to know much more about the case than he was told in the affidavit filed by Peters in support of the discovery application.

  In fairness to the media, they do not have much to report. Those on the receiving end of a lawsuit are well advised to shut up. If matters are settled out of court there would generally be confidentiality orders apart from the parties perhaps giving an agreed statement, apology etc.
  A litigant may try to seek a court order for ‘third party’ discovery from someone than the named defendants and that person is entitled to have reasonable costs met. That would usually occur without fuss or media attention.
  Firstly the two journos he tried to sue (or sought discovery against) were gloating (to the disgust of some people) when discovery attempts failed or yielded little or nothing of interest.
  Now the suits against some of the others have failed and it seems the costs awarded against Winston are substantially more than for discovery.
  It now seems that the information collected through discovery is less than what Winston hoped for and while he could theoretically proceed against the remainder the chances of success are fast diminishing.
  An ordinary person properly advised would most probably let the matter go (or would have some time back). So either Winstons sense of judgment may be impaired (we was a lawyer so would understand these things better than others) or wishes to continue to make life miserable for others by grandstanding even if it costs him some money.

    There’s no need to continue the lawsuit, because it did what it was intended to do. It took the media’s focus away from the fact that the coalition negotiations with National in September/October were based on a false pretence, i.e. that Peters negotiated in good faith.
    
    Clearly, he had no intention whatsoever of going into government with National, which I for one am relieved about.

He lost the first round against the two journos, he has lost the second round against some of those he is trying to nail – this is fairly obvious as they are talking (if there were agreed settlements they would shut up). Seems he now has little basis to proceed with the third round but needs to, to save face.

    I heard the interview & heard the other way.
    Espiner got out of Henry that it was Peters who leaked the story;
    That there are no proceedings at this stage; and he (Henry) hasn’t determined if there will be.
    So, it was a damage limitation exercise on behalf of Peters, using his lawyer to front instead of himself. Probably to ensure he didn’t get into a bigger hole of his own making.

  But Seymour is an idiot. Any politician with a modicum of PR sense should have looked at the t shirt, thought “what would this look like in a photo on Facebook” and declined.
  
  Lots of disaffected right wingers around here saying they’ve had enough of National because of Collins missing out. Don’t agree myself, but nonetheless there should be a place for a party to the right of National, and sure enough one exists: ACT.
  
  So why, when the new coalition government is throwing money around in pork barrel politics in the provinces, and there is the perfect opportunity for ACT to differentiate itself from that, and also National and its new centrist leader, is the discussion surrounding Seymour about a tv ballroom dance competition and doubling down about a t shirt that makes him look like a dinosaur?!

      Sure, and if Seymour is looking to emulate Kevin Bloody Wilson on the comedy circuit, all power to him. But then as ACT poll around 1%, and have always failed to attract anywhere near as much female support compared to men, I’m not sure “blokey fun” is the right pitch. I get that the likes of Trump have shown there is plenty of fatigue in some circles concerning what is labelled PC, and also that ACT has a strong libertarian strain. But ffs, make sure if you make a stand to highlight the issue, it is one worth fighting, and it will gain you votes!

      …when the first thing that will pop into their mind is him wearing that t shirt. The key target demographic that wins elections for either the left or right is white middle class women. And as per Maggy Thatcher’s pitch that women knew the practical value of, and supported her ACT-like policies, Seymour needs their ear. So how do you reckon they would react if a guy wearing that t shirt turned up on the door to take out their teenage daughter? And Seymour reckons it’s a bit of fun. Yeah, true, but fun for whom, and at what political cost?
      
      It’s the mismanagement of the seemingly trivia yet visible things that forfeits support, and disqualifies people from political office.

        Sure, most are smart enough to see Golriz for what she is – and let’s face it, like Angelina Jollee she is likely a woman without many women friends because other women instinctively dislike and distrust her – but the image of Seymour will remain.     Er, no, false equivalence. Guy Williams is a comedian (OK, that’s a matter of taste and opinion. I like him), whereas Seymour is a politician (again, is a matter of taste and opinion) who was campaigning. So judge ’em both on their capacity to reach a target audience with their differing purposes and methods. Williams may have got a laugh. Not sure what Seymour’s message was, so that is a political fail right there.

        Bottomline: Williams and Seymour have different jobs, so, yes, different rules apply. Including judging who has offended needlessly (not a clever move for a politician), and who has not. But then, as you seem to struggle with the essence and purpose of comedy, perhaps that is why you fail to recognise who is – and isn’t – a valid example.   The South African Government can legislate all it wants about the confiscation of “white land and property” but they have a problem…a huge one if they try to do so. The short-sighted government forgets that “white ownership” also includes Asian ownership. The investment in South Africa by the Chinese is enormous both at a private commercial level and at a governmental level. If any Chinese assets are confiscated there’ll be an internal fight of such a scale as South Africa has never known. I say, let these morons have a crack at the Chinese then sit back and watch.

      My point is: Does the South African Government apprehend this? So far there is little or no evidence that it does. The Chinese (and Asians in general) were never treated as being “white” in Apartheid terms, hence I would hesitate to accept that the current government is smart enough to perceive the issue they’re likely creating.

  I’ve been giving this a bit of thought in the last few hours, being somewhat tied to what is going on there.
  
  I would expect that few of the Afrikaans farmers are in a position to move to the West of their own accord since their assets are tied up in land that is no longer has any commercial value and few have exportable skill sets. Quite likely many will join the move deeper into Africa where countries like Nigera, Mozambique and Tanzania have snapped up the Afrikaner farmers since they realise they need the farming skills to feed their people.
  
  South Africa might realise what they had and lost, but they might need a few years with an empty belly first.
  
  However I also predict another tide of people out of South Africa: Black professionals.
  
  South Africa is not bad for white people and good for black people. It is bad for all skilled people who would rather live in a western country than a corrupt shit hole. That includes black professionals too.
  
  Will they come to NZ? Perhaps not, but if they do I would welcome them.
  
  I have occasionally heard Afrikaans being spoken by families out shopping, but only once have I heard isiXhosa. Perhaps we will hear more.

      All I do have is having lived in various parts of South Africa for 30 years, speaking 4 of the languages and dealing with a wide range of different people from different backgrounds and education levels.
      
      I have not lived in South Africa for over 25 years now, but I believe that stepping back from it gives a perspective that cannot be had if you are deep in the situation.

        Arpaio announced Tuesday that he is running for the Arizona US Senate seat currently occupied by Sen. Jeff Flake, who is retiring from Congress at the end of his term.
        
        He was a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump during the campaign, and was pardoned by the President in August. The former Maricopa County sheriff was convicted for defying a court order to stop racially profiling Latinos, and he has been widely criticized for his hard-line stances on immigration.
        
        Arpaio has touted “birtherism” in the past, and, when speaking to CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Wednesday evening, said he has proof that Obama’s birth certificate is fake.
        
        “We have the evidence, nobody will talk about it, nobody will look at it, and anytime you want to come down or anybody we’ll be glad to show you the evidence,” Arpaio said.
        
        Cuomo pressed Arpaio again on the topic: “So you believe that President Obama’s birth certificate is a phony?”

        From some sources, up to 25% of the farmlands are now dormant because farmers are reluctant to pay for all the inputs if they are not going to get the outputs.
        
        Land value has tanked, obviously. Nobody wants to buy a property that is going to get conviscated.
        
        Their costs are also going up:
        * loans: since they can’t use their lands as security, loans for seed, fertilizers, machinery etc are more expensive.
        * insurance: ridiculous due to high levels of theft and sabotage.

        The president and founder of Kentucky’s Creation Museum in Petersburg and the Ark Encounter in Williamstown has been dropped as a speaker at the University of Central Oklahoma after a LGBT group objected.
        
        Ken Ham, president of Answers in Genesis, had been scheduled to speak March 5 at the public university in Edmond, Okla.
        
        Stockton Duvall, student body president at the university, took responsibility for the decision to rescind Ham’s invitation after learning of the opposition to his visit. Duvall told The Oklahoman newspaper that a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning group opposed Ham’s visit because of his view that marriage is between one man and one woman.
        
        “I am not the first person to be personally attacked by a very vocal group on campus that has little tolerance for opposing viewpoints,” Duvall said in a written statement, referring to some Ham opponents.
        
        Ham was to give a lecture titled “Genesis and the State of the Culture” followed by a question-and-answer session. Ham told the Oklahoman he was “shocked” the invitation was rescinded in Oklahoma, “which is considered to be in the Bible Belt area. I think it’s going to be eye-opening to a lot of people.”
        
        In his own blog, Ham pointed out that opponents were able to shut down his campus visit, “yet the school has sponsored and given university funding toward a Drag Queen show.” Furthermore, he said, a professor who opposed his visit ‘also sponsors a safe sex carnival,’ which includes explicit, so-called learning games (that as a Christian I would describe as sexually perverse). Apparently, these events are acceptable on campus, but having a Christian come and speak is not.”

      For reference: 70% of farm land is in the hands of the whites & 30% in the hands of the African population. The problem with these statistics is that the 70% of farmland designated as owned by whites overstates the position, as this stat includes land owned by South Africa’s largest food conglomerate, which is most definitely not owned by the white population.

      What the fuck are you talking about? 80% own 2% is complete crap. That suggests 1 million white people (to fit your narrative) would own 80% of South African land.
      
      Just in the Transkei and KwaZulu Natal areas, about 10 million black people (about 20% of the South African population) together own the majority of the most fertile areas in South Africa.
      
      Let’s not just talk about land as if it is all the same. The best parts (which the black people occupied before whites arrived) has been in black hands since they stole it off the Koi San and remained in black hands all the way through apartheid to this day.
      
      Sure there was some relocation of blacks during apartheid, but there was also relocation of whites too. My grandparents were thrown off their lands too.
      
      To be clear, I am in no way condoning apartheid.
      
      South Africa can basically be broken up into 4 main regions (in order of most fertile to least fertile):
      * The Eastern areas: KwaZulu Natal and Transkei (whatever it is called now). Rural land in KwaZulu is perhaps 50% owned by Zulus and 50% owned by white farmers. Approx 30% of KwaZulu is owned by the Zulu tribal trust called Ingonyama. Approx 4 million Zulu people live on the Ingonyama lands.
      
      Almost all white owned land in KwaZulu Natal was either purchased or gifted to white people by Zulus.
      
      Transkei (where the Xhosa people come from) is almost entirely owned by Xhosa people and has been all the way through apartheid.
      
      *The northern area: Transvaal etc. This is where the majority of the Afrikaners live. This is also pretty fertile, but needs proper irrigation and management to make it productive.
      
      Black populations in these areas were very low when the Afrikaners moved in – mainly due t0:
      1) They preferred to live in the more naturally fertile areas where their crops grew better.
      2) It was shortly after the Mfecane genocide when the Zulus killed off vast numbers and drove people away to Zimbabwe and beyond.
      
      * Arid: Orange Free State, Karoo, Western Cape etc. Black people did not live there except for a few bands of people displaced by the Mfecane. There were sparse bands of Koi San people living in these areas when the Europeans came. These are now arid farmlands (think Otago on steroids). Sheep farming measured in acres per head rather than head per acre. Also winelands, fruit and some cereal crops etc. Traditional nguni crops did not grow in these areas, so therefore black people did not settle there.
      
      * Complete desert: eg. Kalahari. Just a few Koi San hunter gatherer tribes and some very arid sheep farming etc in some area.
      
      So all the way through apartheid, black people continued to live on, and farm, most of the fertile areas of land in South Africa: the East.
      
      What is under main contention are the areas in Transvaal where farmers were able to convert scrub land into productive farmlands though the application of modern methods. When those farmers are driven off, those farms will go back to scrub. The magic is in the farmers, not in the lands.
      
      When that happens. South Africa will experience even worse food deficits than it has now. Prices will go up, people will go hungry and the shit-stirrers will blame the boers even more.

        Superb summary, but it doesn’t equate with the group think though. As you point out, when the farms in the Transvaal, Natal, & the Western Cape are taken that will be the end of the last country in Africa producing food on an industrial scale. Therefore, not only will SA be screwed, but there will also be consequences in the rest of Africa.
        
        Finally, what is also galling is that this has been advanced by Julius Mlema, who was a shit stirring teenager when Mandela came to power, has claimed Marxism etc as a political/union organiser, but is a multi millionaire, go figure?

Sooner or later this make believe story from Winston Peters over being overpaid in NZ Super will come back to bite him on the arse. After agreeing to pay court costs of those he has accused we now find his Laywers getting tough on the media and having them amend their stories to suit Peters narritive but it looks like NZ Stuff are having none of Peters bullying and have stuck to the original story and posted it again at 7.51 am.

  Winston Peters’ case was in response to leaked details of his superannuation overpayments to the media before last year’s election.
  
  Winston Peters’ legal team has denied claims the deputy prime minister has dropped a lawsuit against senior members of the National Party.
  
  On Wednesday, there were media reports Peters had dropped the case over breach of privacy against former National Party leader Bill English, along with Paula Bennett, Steven Joyce and Anne Tolley, as well as two National staffers.

  Former National Party minister and election mastermind Stephen Joyce, left and former Prime Minister Bill English were sued by Winston Peters.
  
  Initially Peters also sued Newsroom editor Tim Murphy and Newshub reporter Lloyd Burr to uncover the leak sources – but in early February said “the application for pre-proceeding discovery against the two media intended defendants has been amicably resolved”.
  
  Peters later said he never intended to sue the journalists, and “phase one” of the legal battle was geared towards uncovering the necessary information.
  
  On Wednesday, it was reported Peters had agreed to drop the legal proceedings that were already filed and pay $10,000 in legal costs. These details were included in a settlement deal.
  
  However, Peters’ lawyer Brian Henry has since said the case is ongoing, adding the legal action will spread wider than first anticipated.
  
  Henry told the AM Show those from the National Party named in the discovery proceedings would be included in the second phase, as well as additional staff or MPs within National.
  
  This second phase was related to the alleged defamation, which allegedly damaged Peters’ reputation.
  
  The only people who would not be part of any future proceedings were the two journalists, Henry said.
  
  Henry’s comments were consistent with what Peters has said in the past.
  
  While “phase one” of the legal proceedings (discovery) had been completed, Peters was now moving onto “the next phase”.
  
  All those named as defendants have denied involvement in the leaking of his Superannuation payment details.
  
  In August last year news media revealed Peters had been overpaid $18,000 in superannuation over several years. After the Ministry of Social Development informed Peters of the overpayment, Peters promptly repaid the amount in full.
  
  Brian Henry was unable to be reached for comment.

I’d like to ask a straight forward political question if I can.
I understand the reasoning behind hard nosed communists like Lenin and the Bolsheviks, as they were trying to gain power by controlling and subjugating the people. Over the last 100 years or so, countries such as England, France and Germany have had communist movements which gained real momentum only to be quashed by the powers that be. What I don’t understand is what makes the common man believe in communism. The only people to gain from these ideals are the leaders who tread all over the rest.
We now have our own die-hard socialist in power, who I feel would gladly escalate to full blown communism. But what makes the working class people think they are better off under the iron fist of communism??

  JIV– That’s a good question. I would suggest that communism offered the chance for the worker to run the show by overthrowing their capitalist bourgeoisie Masters. Communism also offered a utopian “heaven on earth” where you would read Plato in the morning and fish in the afternoon.
  
  Sadly but predictably it really only delivered hell on earth with the banning of all things religious, torture and labour camps for all dissidents, and the institution of a personality cult revering the dear Leader.
  
  Communism per se is probably dead. The socialist dream does live on in places like Venezuela which has huge oil reserves but due to socialism is now an economic basket case.
  
  Communism also lives on in near Marxist cultural theory where it gave rise to feminism, homosexual rights, political correctness and the obsession with race, class and gender which blights much of our political and cultural life.

        The Japan Teachers Union (日本教職員組合 Nihon Kyōshokuin Kumiai, JTU) is alive and fully operational.
        They tend to support the Japan Socialist Party, and some the Japan Communist Party.
        
        There was quite a stir several years ago when the Ministry of Education called for the Japanese national anthem to be sung at graduation ceremonies, and a large number of teachers refused to go along with the policy.
        
        In a way, it is good to have a viable opposition to the more nationalistic elements in Japan; however, I would not trust the socialists and I question the wisdom of the nationalists.

  You only have to read the many, many comments on Stuff stories where the writers tear into the “Tories” and whinge about status and “unfairness”.
  Here in NZ everyone has the opportunity to make good, no matter what their birth circumstances might be, but still there is huge hate and envy of people who own property or business.
  Communism is well on its way here as many politicians and activists see conservation of the environment as a convenient means to take state ownership and control of land and the means of production.

    10% of the population creates the wealth for the other 90%. Those who actually produce stuff. Example, if you throw all the productive farmers off the land those who take over don’t have the expertise to grow the food for the population and starvation ensues.
    
    It is an unfair world for a reason. Those who are organised, educated and productive produce the products and create the employment. Envy will not get you anywhere unless it motivates you to work towards your personal goals and not expect the government to supply your needs and wants. If you remove the productive there is no one to fund the communist lifestyle.

      Also Merchant seamen in that conflict were forced to go to sea and if their ship was sunk under them they were discharged the moment they took to the lifeboats meaning their pay ceased
      
      Stalin in the Thirties transformed the Soviet Union from an Agricultural economy to an Industrial one which was hard on the people
      
      Winston Churchill suspended all civil liberties in WW2 and really that is not that much different from what Stalin did
      
      FDR interned the Japanese

        There was a shortage of miners because most people would rather be shot at than face slow death trapped in a mine.
        
        From 1943 to 1945 in Britain one in 10 men conscripted was sent to work in the mines rather than into the armed forces. The 48,000 or so conscripted miners were nicknamed the “Bevin boys” after the Cabinet Minister who came up with the plan.
        
        There were strikes during the war in coal mines, on the wharves, and even, as Wikipedia notes:
        
        In 1943, workers at a factory in London making tail-fins for Halifax bombers went on strike and more than 16,000 women and some men walked out of the Rolls-Royce factory in Glasgow — where they should have been making engines for fighter planes.
        
        Someone may be able to verify stories claiming that during World War 2 in NZ, wharfies went on strike, including at the crucial time when the 2nd Marine Division was embarking from NZ for Guadacanal.

  Do they think that? I can’t say I’ve met that many communists or even full-blown socialists in NZ. For the most part, people don’t have well-defined political ideologies (be it laissez faire capitalism, libertairian, communism, whatever).     Agreed. And neither Britain, nor France nor (West) Germany ever had a communist government. And even in the dark days of 1970s partially-socialist Britain, when Trotskyites were trying to hijack the the then-Labour Government of the moderate Jim Callaghan, the ones in his cabinet preaching the hot gospel of revolution or radicalism were intellectuals like (former peer) Anthony (“call me ‘Tony’”) Wedgwood Benn and Michael Foot. Benn used to was lyrical about the “British worker thirsting for revolution” but those in the government who were working class knew he had no idea or experience of what he was talking bout. Instead he was an intellectual snob who would recoil in contempt and disdain if he actually knew how mundane and unambitious the political goals of most workers were. ?
    
    They may have been on strike too much, but the reason lots of British workers did so was to keep up with or ahead of inflation, not precipitate the revolution. Workers are practical people, with little time for academic theorists, including those of the radical left.

If any further confirmation was needed about how far our msm has been compromised by bias, we need only look at the coverage of both new main political parties leaders.
A few short months ago, Ms Ardern was elevated to Labour leadership. Many outside small parts of Auckland and Wellington had barely even heard of Ms Ardern then, despite her being in Parliament for a number of years. What had she achieved during that time?
No matter, the new Messiah had arrived, no question of it. All relentlessly positive.
Now we have Mr Bridges appointed.
He certainly isn’t the next Messiah- ask B. Soper and associates.
Bridges may, or may not be leadership material, but
you can bet the only information about him out to NZ citizens via our media is going to be relentlessly slanted to a negative perspective.
We deserve better than this blatant manipulation.

  Soper had a column in the Herald yesterday inferring that neither Bridges nor Bennett is Maori enough to be able to claim being Maori.
  
  Interestingly, that column has been roundly condemned by people from right across the political spectrum as being bigoted, racist and completely out of touch. My view is that Soper is, like his mate Peters, past his use-by date, and should be put out to pasture.

        I think the inference later in Question Time from Brownlie was that the claimed payment was to the local council rather than directly to the same person/company.

    Surely instead of relying on the population to do the right thing and complete the census survey as ‘requested’, the more accurate way to take a snapshot of the NZ population would be for government departments to take a snapshot of the information they have on 6 March.
    The department in charge of noting all births and deaths of NZ state the number of current kiwis, Department of Immigration to state the number of new arrivals and returning kiwis and deduct those who have departed permanently. Anyone here illegally is not going to complete an official form.

  Assume she will form a committee. She was very involved with the reinsurance programme travelling around the world when her friend Lloyd Falk was EQC Chairman.

    I don’t think she’s expecting EQC to resolve outstanding claims over that time period.
    According to the chap who has just resigned the 2,600 outstanding claims represent a small fraction of the overall number. However that’s not much comfort to the people who have waited all these years to get their houses sorted.
    Furthermore a big proportion of the completed remedial work seems to have been not up to scratch.
    
    I’d be interested to hear from people in the industry defending the EQC.

    That of course is a load of rubbish. Let me explain how both can exist by way of a simple example. Assume 5 places, old temps 1,2,3,4,5. If new temps are 2,3,4,5,6 then there has been global warming of 1 degree (which is uniformly spread). If the temps are 6,5,4,3,2 then 3 places have warmed and 2 cooled (climate change) but there is still global warming.

For not the first time this week Stuff’s sub-editors have waved through a piece in which the words ‘them’ or ‘themselves’ have referred back to an individual:

“A lower North Island student who was allegedly goaded to commit suicide by classmates on a school camp bus trip later tried to kill themselves twice.”

All in the interests of eliminating gender references from the English language.

(And if the egregious mixing of the singular and the plural is not bad enough, the writer also alludes, laughably, to the person in question being capable of killing himself twice!)

  ‘themselves’ is an acceptable form of identification when the gender is of the person referred to is not known, or of no relevance to the sentence (i.e. when it does not matter if the subject is male or female). Always has been, AFAIK.
  
  You’ll notice that the article deliberately does not identify the person, who the writers refer to as ‘the student’, throughout:
  
  Stuff has chosen not to name those involved, as well as the school and its exact location, to protect the privacy of the student.
  …
  
  So, given the gender is not known (to the reader) I don’t see what the problem is here.

        No, it’s not that simple. In a revised version, Stuff itself managed to stuff up its attempted ‘correction’. Firstly it captioned a ‘staged’ illustration:

        Still has a single student “killing themselves”, but at least they managed to place the word “twice” in its (almost) correct position; so credit for that.
        
        Then, following immediately in the body of the story, Stuff reports:

        Once again, an individual person is assumed to be able to commit suicide twice; most of us would consider that impossible. But Stuff also mangled the suggested and familiar singular pronoun option, “him/herself” which is understood usually to indicate gender unknown. Instead it used its own stilted form, “himself or herself”, as though the unfortunate individual had a gender option.
        
        Sadly, some of these media people have difficulty stringing together a few simple words and phrases. Which is okay in general terms, but not in the media where they are paid to communicate clearly.

      This has always been acceptable. ‘They’ can be used in a singular manner to replace ‘him’ or ‘her’ when the gender is unknown. The only other option is ‘themself’ which sounds a little whack to my ear but is probably acceptable.

House price inflation was lower for all of NZ under the last National government then any other government since the 1950s.     If you want cheaper housing, get development, building and compliance costs down. Lifting interest rates will stall the building of new houses and cause people lo lower their sights when buying houses thus squeezing bottom rung buyers.
    Very cynically those already in their own homes do not want cheaper new housing – it will undermine the value of their own houses and they want stringent and difficult planning controls to continue because of NIMBY.

      Not only do we not have the builders to do the work, and we have known that well before they promised to cut immigration by 20 to 30 000, but turns out we don’t actually have the people with the money to buy the houses.. if in fact they’re ever built.
      
      Auckland alone will get 50,000 of these so-called affordable homes, but the papers show us only 25,000 first home buyers have the income to buy them.
      
      The great crime was Minister Phil Twyford being asked what sort of income you would need to buy one of these homes, he said 60 grand.
      
      Turns out to be 114 grand.
      
      Now if the bloke in charge of all this is that out to lunch, do we hold out any hope at all?
      
      Enter the Prime Minister who in an interview with me Tuesday broke into a rare bout of depression by agreeing the Government may actually not only end up building these homes, but having to buy them as well.
      
      They will have to take a stake in the homes so as to make them affordable.
      
      And that money for the stake comes out of the money that was for building, so the building slows down.
      
      And the building is already behind. 10,000 a year for 10 years is the promise, it’s already back to 18,000 in the first three years and we all know that’s a speculative promise at best, given not a single house has actually been built yet five months into Government.
      
      This is where the rubber hits the road, re-election will not be possible with committees, reports and working group findings.
      
      Re-election is won on a strong economy and good economic stewardship.
      
      If progress on KiwiBuild is their best work, National could have picked Mickey Mouse as their new leader and still feel confident.

  Leicester is the third-most densely populated European Union city, has become an interesting city that has become super diverse with a multi culture, a strong “Asian” flavour.
  
  Sort of strange that explosions strong enough to obliterate entire buildings, were not common in Western world cities.
  
  Quite possibly health and safety laws are not kept up to standard, by the authorities, that endangered their citizens.

(Scene – Point Chevalier, Auckland, sometime in June 2018)

Lo, a bright light appeared in the west. Which was unusual, because it wasn’t speedway season, and Western Springs was closed.

Three wise men came from the east. It was a long journey, as the ring road hadn’t been completed, and the leaders had withdrawn funding!

As they journeyed west, they saw the multitudes before them, line upon line. All paying a 10 cent a litre tithe to the profit, sorry Prophet Goff, who did say to the masses,

“The journey I attempted will be completed by another yet to come, behold, the end is in sight! Can you see the Sky Tower from there? All good then, why don’t you try a bus next time?”

“It’s takes too long to travel from where we can afford to live oh Profit, I mean Prophet! It’s too far Goff!” One of the multitudes replied.

As one, they all took up the plaintive cry, beseeching the Profit, sorry, Prophet, “Far Goff, Far Goff, Far Goff” (At least, that’s what it sounded like!)

Meanwhile the Three Wise Men consulted the oracle of Google, and went down Meola Road, marvelling at the silence of the animals at the zoo, calling it a portent of glad tidings. (somewhere in the distance, an elephant farted!)

As they approached the house in Point Chevalier, bathed in an unearthly white light, they approached the guardians and asked to enter so they could give blessings to the anointed one.

“Piss off”, said the copper, “she’s gone off to have the baby at a private hospital!”

The three wise men stood bewildered as a line of Green MP’s trudged past grumbling about why she wasn’t having an underwater home birth while being serenaded by chanting Buddhist monks while a Kuia from up north sing waiata and a Kaumatua says a karakia before taking the placenta back up north to bury it in the treaty grounds.

A wizened dark complexioned man in an italian suit carrying a bottle of whiskey kept running around telling everyone that he was in charge now, and would anyone like to wet the babies head.

The Wise Men left the gifts of Gold, Frankincence and Myrrh at the house for the annointed one, but the police did not know what Myrrh was, called the bomb squad, and blew it up!

Meanwhile, shepherds in their fields by night continued to moan about the lack of regional funding, as they didn’t have any money to help their nephews plant trees.

The bright unearthly light disappeared, and the Police Helicopter returned to base.

    Michael Wolf got a fair bit of flack because ” Fire and Fury” is full of unsourced and unsubstantiated quotes and anecdotes but it has got some credit for being a fairly accurate picture of what the Whitehouse was like. In particular he credits the war between Bannon/Priebus and Jarvanka with creating the leaks and chaos. One thing that is interesting is the names of people who came into the Whitehouse as part of Jared and Ivanka’s team and who have left recently. In the last couple of days there have been reports of Josh Raffel and Dina Powell moving on. May have something to do with Jared’s problems with his security clearance which stem from his financial and other problems. With Hicks leaving and Jared on shaky ground it must be getting fairly lonely for the Donald in the West wing. Doesn’t really look like Melania is talking to him any more.

        Yates, Bharara, McCabe, Comey were not his cabinet/admin choices. Yates just stayed on until Sessions was confirmed but she was fired for not following an Executive order which the SCOTUS agrees with. Bharara was a political appointee of Obama, it is customary to resign with a new Admin. McFarland took the job as Singapore Ambassador, Icahn was really only an outside advisor.     US media now also reporting that Trump berated her today for her saying that she told “white lies” for him. Reporting he forcefully said “How could you be so *stupid*?” At which point she quit.
    
    Legal experts all agreeing that berating a subordinate, who Trump knew was a witness in a pending criminal investigation of which he is the target, for *telling the truth* is a textbook case of felony witness tampering.

      The legal stuff is fairly academic. Even if the Dems pick up enough house seats to get an impeachment charge up the Senate wont find 75 members to vote for it. The GOP senators need Trump’s voters to keep their jobs and he still has about 40% support. After everything that has happened since the inauguration the bar is now set so low it is hard to see Trump not hanging on the most of that so the Republicans are stuck with him, even if he now is all in for gun control.

OK…..this may be venturing into Tin Foil Hat territory, but here goes.

Winston Peters, having discovered that he has been overpaid super by a mistake that he has compounded with 7 years of either mistaken or false declarations, rectifies the mistake and publically announces it, with the notification that he has initiated court action.

Given the fallout with Turei, this had the potential to devastate the Peters Campaign, so, in election year, how does he manage the scandal? By attacking and making himself the victim of a mistake and privacy breach, and making the narrative about what was done to him, and not what he has done. The court action was a cover up and will come to nothing.

Where we venture into tin foil hat territory is the following. Winston has a habit of stage managing controversy. Remember the NO sign? Remember his litigation with regard to defamation re the Scampi deal that was thrown out?

We also find that a lot of this comes at election time. Some readers might recall that in the 2014 election, Winston was assaulted in Hamilton at a campaign rally.

The result was an upsurge in free publicity, but despite many camera and what had to be a police presence, the assailant was never identified or caught, and Peters was shown to be a “man of action” who defended himself.

Was that staged as well? Why was the assailant oddly dressed with a weird beanie and a zipped up jacket, and spouting neo Nazi slogans?

Why, when I saw the pictures, did the assailant remind me of the NZ first candidate for Rongotai?

Now I am not saying that Winnie screwed up his own pension as a stunt, but he certainly worked the narrative for all he was worth.

    It’s pretty much compulsory to fabricate a Maori name for educational institutions or groups within them.
    My daughter’s school reactivated the “house” system several years ago. And despite only a tiny minority of students being Maori, and none (probably) able to speak Te Reo, all five houses had to have Maori names (named after fish, in the end).
    It might have been more “diverse” to give one house a Chinese name, one an English one, then a Hindi name, a Spanish name and finally a Samoan one.

        All these “unfamiliar” names for the students to learn, which had no relevance to their daily lives.
        
        If the fish names had been even familiar ones such as terahiki or kawhai, it wouldn’t have been so bad, but the ones they chose were all the names of the obscure kinds of fish that Kiwis (and most Maori students) would never know the names of, either.

        AR stands for Armalite Rifle, which this class of firearm is developed from. The current main version is the M16. These are select-fire assault rifles, meaning you can switch between automatic and semi-automatic fire.
        
        AR15s for commercial sale are generally modified so they are limited to semi-automatic fire. This meets laws of some American states. Thus the AR15s sold in America and NZ are modified versions of the original fully automatic Armalite style rifle.
        
        Unmodified AR15s don’t need bump fire stocks. They can fire fully automatic.
        
        Modified AR15s, the ones sold mainly to the public, cannot fire fully automatic unless they are tinkered with or use a bump fire stock.
        
        The NZ Army has just bought thousands of a sophisticated version of the AR15-M16, from LMT. Straight out of the packing crate it is select fire between semiautomatic and automatic.

The Labour Coalition Government is throwing $28 million at hiring health professionals to work with teachers helping Christchurch kids because of alleged mental health issues after the earthquakes.

It’s bullshit, and I say that as the parent and grandparent of Christchurch kids and relative and friend of other families with such kids.

Teachers, and probably some PC parents, are blaming heaps of behavioural problems on the earthquakes.

An ethnic Chinese New Zealander explains why she has two names: her given Chinese names and a Kiwi name.

Chinese folk have done this for a long time, and I think it’s quite sensible.

I wonder why some Pacific Islanders with names which are perhaps awkward to pronounce or spell, perhaps being laced with hyphens, don’t do the same.

Come to think of it, I’ve known more than a few European New Zealanders, with given Christian names that embarrassed them, and happily go by a nickname or an amended name.

A peculiar thing about this: These people are evidently socialists / communists. The PM of NZ is of the same persuasion (by her own admission BTW). She (and her fellow coalition members), although at one time ‘Anti’ the TPP, are now enthusiatically supporting it. Since the PM and these individuals are by all appearances on the same ‘side’ of the political spectrum and should (at least in theory) be all doing the same thing, why are these individuals doing what they are doing? A different faction of ‘socialism / communism perhaps; one that is ‘better’ than the others and believes that it has the moral ‘high ground’ as a result? Does anyone actually know?

    I listen to RNZ daily, especially Mora, and it’s chock full of lefties. Lefties who are frequenty not fully disclosed as to their interests.

      I can’t understand why Mr Bland Mora wasn’t put out to pasture years ago when he went from the afternoon slot to the 4pm hour.

so as of today you wont be able to take your old mum or dad for a drive to the summit of mt victoria , the gutless north shore council have bowed to a few noisey maori and a gate will be closed full time.
i have little doubt that if you are a komatua or kuia it will be like magic and opened to allow you access.
Being white in this country has become a handicap and i fear its just to late to change our course.
within 20 years we will have to go down to the local marae for a permit to walk on a hill, go down to the beach,or go fishing .
and we deserve everything that is coming because we have mostly done nothing to stop it.
