I used to think that Kelvin Davis was the dimmest person in Parliament, but after seeing her performance yesterday, I think that Clare Curran wears the crown.

        And in reply, also, to Salacious Crumb – I was going to comment on the attire of Gayford. He appears to be a rather uncouth sort of a chap doesn’t he? The first thing I noticed was that he had his hand in his pocket shaking hands with the Australian Officials who were there to welcome them in Sydney. And no tie either. You’ve thought that he would take his cue from the other blokes travelling with the them. As I’ve said before, Ardern and Gayford look like a couple of toe rags compared to the new ‘power couple’ Bridges.

        It wasn’t an electoral achievment. National won the election – they got more votes than Labour and the Greens combined.
        
        But sadly the CoL won the post-election negotiations, thanks purely to being much more willing than National to sell out. With Jacinda Ardern willing to blatantly sell a stint as Prime Minister, that was an offer that National (or any party with even an ounce of morales) would not match.

        Yes he had to step in and shut down Melissa Lee’s questioning of Curran – she was flustered and confused and had no idea how to answer the question. Even after several attempts !
        
        Looked like those around her were equally unprepared because there was no frantic note passing as we have often seen in such cases.
        
        This is a real can of worms – get out the can opener Melissa !

  when the Herald putting a local election piece up about the issues in our area, and the commentator was introduced as head of a environmental charity but was actually a parliamentary staffer for a local mp.

  I note that in the German interview, Merkel uses the term “No Go area” in English, rather than a German expression.
  Japanese politicians also tend to transliterate US English expressions for social phenomena (such as “seku-hara” sexual harassment) which in a way implies that these have come into Japan “from outside.”
  By using the English term “No Go area”, Merkel is implying that this is not a German-created problem, when it was her administration that allowed the situation to develop in the first place.

      You are probably right.
      
      This is how these loan-words come about.
      First, there is some social problem that the German (or Japanese) media doesn’t want to talk about.
      Next, foreign reporters cotton on to what is happening, and come up with their own term for the phenomenon.
      In the third stage, the German (or Japanese, etc.) media transliterate the phrase. This is comforting to them because they don’t have to take the responsibility of thinking about or naming the phenomenon in the first place.
      Once you describe a new phenomenon or (God forbid) name it, then you are partially responsible for it.

        Maggy, you realise you listed nearly every city in the state with a population over 200k (obvious ones missing are Dortmund und Leverkushen).
        I would dispute some of that list as I lived & worked in Essen for 2 years (Kettweig und Werden both by the Ruhr, beautiful environment to live despite being in the Ruhrgebeit).

    Stephie, I suggest you read the book No Go Zones: How Sharia Law Is Coming to a Neighborhood Near You, by Raheem Kassam. His complexion is such that he was able to go into these zones and experience what it was like for himself.

  The government has published the list of zones and maps of each of the 751 sensitive urban zones
  
  In Sweden they classify them as “vulnerable area”, “risk area” and “especially vulnerable area”.
  December 2015 report, these areas numbered 53. June 2017 report, these totalled 61.

      Stephie Woolwich has a barracks where a soldier was hacked to death by a moron out to exact jihad. Not necessarily a dangerous place to go though. Trump was feeding of this incident.
      
      If you want “no go in the UK, I could list a 100 other places because, including London. There are places like the estates in Tottenham where there have been race riots, Sheppard’s Bush where Jamaican yardie gangs rule. Both areas are in different parts of London.
      
      So, relying on social media for your information is bloody dumb.

      So Merkel would know Germany the best.

      The real issue is “no police” areas, so German law is not being applied.
      
      Many, many parts of Germany are not so fraught, and away from large groups of ‘immigrants’ are great.
      
      But why is it recognized in Sweden the number of “vulnerable” “risk” and “especially vulnerable areas” increasing in number from 53 to 61 in 2 years?
      
      So finally government official Merkel also now calls it “no go zones”, where German police finds a number of areas, that it is very difficult to keep German law and order

So what does the change of President in South Africa really mean?

The old guy, Zuma, was clearly corrupt up to his armpits. With over 700 corruption charges, something has got to stick. He is also uneducated and borderline illiterate – he has a Year 4 education.

Zuma had a few things going in his favour though:
* He’s a Zulu. Being a member of the largest and most powerful tribe in South Africa gives him support that he does not need to earn.
* He was the last of the Umkonto we Sizwe (Armed wing of ANC) “freedom fighter” leaders. This gave him a certain degree of revolutionary “street cred”.
* He was anointed for the position by Mandela and nobody wants to disagree with Madiba.

Now along comes Ramaphosa. He’s not as criminally corrupt, but he has no doubt profited hansomly from his ability to lubricate deals and found himself on the board of directors of many large corporations. At one time he was the principle franchisee for McDonalds, taking a bite out of every burger transaction.

Ramaphosa lacks the things Zuma has:
* He’s a Venda, not a Zulu. From a Zulu perspective, Venda are a pesky minor tribe that were sent running in the Mfecane.
* While he did play a role in strikes and other civil disobedience, he is not Umkonto we Sizwe. It is easy to paint him as a “umlungu emnyama” – black on the outside and white on the inside – something that the EFF is trying to do.

Before Zuma came to power, the KwaZulu Natal region (where most of the Zulus live) was rife with constant battles between the Inkhata Freedom Party (more traditionally Zulu) and the ANC. This is a battle that has gone on since the 1960s and a lot of apartheid-era policing and military resources were deployed in peacekeeping.

When Zuma, an ANC Zulu, was in power, this conflict was vastly reduced. Now he’s gone, expect the ANC vs Zulu violence to erupt again. Expect a return to 1980s level tribal violence in KZN over the next year. However this time there is no white government (and white conscripts) to keep the peace. The government forces are now run by ANC, but staffed by Zulus.

  I am saddened to see what is happening in South Africa. I still have an aunt and 2 cousins over there and all I can see in their future is Zimbabwe but on a scale much worse.
  Still I say now there is a black dominated country in Africa that is safe we swop our Somali refugees for white SA farmers as I am sure they will get jobs that don’t involve driving a taxi.

    I would swap the typical Somali refugees for the blacks that I predict are going to flood out of South Africa: the honest and educated black professionals who can see the writing on the wall and realise there is no good place for them and their families in a corrupt society – regardless of who is running it.

Before Waitiangi they were killing each other off and they have never collectively coalesced into a united nation under the one leader. That’s the difficulty the Maori Party had–others had different tribal loyalties to the then leader of the Maori Party and were pleased to take them out.

      Not many would (yet) come out and openly advocate for land confiscation…. but I’m sure that a sizeable minority of kiwis’ background believe that ‘the evil white colonialists came out here and stole the country off the Maoris’. This after all is what these neverending TOW settlements are all about.
      
      The events in South Africa will have a flow-on effect all over the world, not least in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

I doubt anyone knows the extent of the brainwashing that is going on in immersion schools but the results are often on parade in Facebook.         A lot of these talking heads are connected to universities and other jobs at the mercy of government largess etc. Any that put their heads above the parapets had them shot off long ago. You are unlikely to get an honest word out of any of them – and I don’t blame them given their situation.
        
        There are no doubt many whites in South Africa who are happy to see this being made all about the Afrikaner farmers.
        
        They are happy to throw the Afrikaner farmers under the bus because it takes the heat off them.
        
        Just like in any genocide you can walk past the bloke being hacked to death thinking oh well, at least it isn’t me. Even better, help put in the boot a bit yourself to show you’re no threat.
        
        But that’s temporary. Next it will be envy of the whites living in nice city houses. If blacks can take the land off the farmers then why can’t they take the nice city houses off the whites too?       Interestingly, this is the divergence from Common Law, the government takes property without compensation, once this happens these countries are unsalvageable (Pakistan has slowly abandoned Common Law for Sharia Law, now it is a shithole).

        Gabby, the huge increase in homeless natives normally comes from something very different: health care and the availability of cheap food.
        
        If you’re living a traditional subsistence African lifestyle (ie. a few cattle and chickens etc, hoeing your own fields to raise a few square metres of some traditional grain) then 90% of the babies you have die in their first year, women die in childbirth etc. There is constant war, so that kills off men.
        
        Then come the Portugese in the late 1500s, bringing sweet potatoes (kumara), maize and beans from South America and teach some farming basics. Agricultural productivity increases and populations increase, but infant mortality is still huge.
        
        Then come the Brits (the best colonials). They bring hospitals, medicines etc. The third biggest hospital in the world (the biggest outside China) was built for black people by the white government in South Africa. Now the kids survive. Population goes exponential.
        
        When the Brits leave government, corruption sets in so the people at the bottom are even worse off.
        
        This is not isolated to South Africa.
        
        South African population has increased about 15 times since 1900. That’s going to lead to housing issues etc.
        
        And, by the way, the “terrible” shacks etc people are living in in South Africa are no worse than what average people lived in before the colonials showed up.

        Some years ago, as the effect of Mugabe’s policies were just beginning to be felt, I became friendly with a black Zimbabwean couple. They were educated professionals, deeply committed to their country and their extended families there.
        
        We discussed colonialism, whites, tribal politics etc, and how they saw it all. They had very strong feelings, and a sense of betrayal, frustration, and despair at what was happening.
        
        All summed up by the comment, “I do not blame the British for coming in the first place. I blame them for leaving. ”
        
        The colonists brought masses of things (eg. technology, health, business, education), all held together and distributed by law, order, and governance. When that governance was withdrawn, the system collapsed.

      My understanding is that South Africa, prior to colonisation, was very sparsely populated, and mainly only around the coast.
      The Dutch and English migrants found the interior virtually uninhabited and turned it into a fertile and productive land, and black migration from coastal and northern areas commenced.

    And it is not just the Afrikaners either. All those farmers employ workers who will no longer be productively employed. They also injected money into those rural economies which supported millions of people. With no rural livelihood many are going to head to the cities.
    
    Then of course there’s the food angle. South Africa is no longer feeding itself and that is only going to get worse. No more “fat and happy”. Hungry people get desperate. Desperate people get polarised and violent.
    
    This is not a case of whites winning and blacks losing, but a matter of everyone losing.

      That’s a bit like saying the Christchurch Cathedral was the best building in North Island.
      
      It is a stretch to say Madagascar, Mauritius, etc are really part of Africa.
      
      Mauritius was uninhabited until Dutch colonised in 1600s, then abandoned. French came along in 1700s, then the Brits turfed them out.
      
      It was visited a few times by Arabs and Europeans before the Dutch arrived, but no real Africans.
      
      Africans have never really been boat building seafaring people beyond a few dug out logs on larger African lakes and the Okovango swamps. You need pretty good ships to cross the 400-odd km stretch of treacherous waters from Africa proper to Madagascar and beyond. Those that went to Madagascar around 1000 years ago either got Arabian or Polynesian help to do that.

        You’re right – the average punter/voter probably wouldn’t give two hoots about something dodgy occurring at RNZ, but the line that this ‘caring’ govt for the people that thinks capitalism hurts everyone, so it’ll spend a heap more on RNZ rather than charter schools could be a good angle.
        Targeting the PM and demanding to know whether she knew whether one of her staffers was appearing as an unbiased/independent contractor trumpeting the govt’s view on life could gain traction – trouble is there’s two weeks of a legal team in overdrive composing a suitable alternative spin as to how this all happened before the next set of questioning…
        It’s interesting though – small, apparently insignificant scandals sometimes develop a habit of ‘snowballing’ (and possibly bringing down governments).

The National Party was in a mess in the early 2000’s thanks to Rob Muldoon then Jim Bolger trying to persist with Rogernomics type policies such as privatising the streets outside peoples houses and picking an unwinnable fight with firefighters. Change was inevitable.

      I do not think there will ever be an ‘ideal’ party leader. Perhaps John Key came closest to this. Pragmatically, the National Party MP’s are collectively in the beat position to select the leader. They have to work with the leader and are incentivised by wanting to get back into power. The sign of a strong cohesive caucus is one where MP’s will swallow rats where need be and get right in behind the new leader and definitely not to run ‘white ant’ campaigns. Similarly with the party at large and its activist membership.
      Early days yet, but Simon is already off to a good start. He will make mistakes, but that is to expected. He will no doubt take advice from the missus how to perfect media skills including handling leaders debates. However he will not be all things to all people so he will disappoint those who think National should return to its ‘founding principles’ whatever they are.
      My personal preference for leader would have been Judith Collins, but thinking objectively I doubt it would have worked out.

How nice to see CNN are almost universally unpopular amongst viewers, and Hannity/Tucker on Fox the most watched. I tuned into CNN last night to see how their presenters came across, and was taken aback by the sourness and negativity. I am sure most Yanks don’t think like that.

  I filled mine in on line today, as my letter was addressed to the householder, imagine my surprise when my ‘code’, when inputted, was for a different address.
  Admittedly there was the opportunity to correct the address on line, but hardly a good start.
  I did, as my civic duty dictated also ring the 0800 number to say what I thought of their logistical system and questions. 😉
  
  I am however at a loss to explain the relevance of some of the questions and confused by the likely use to which the answers were to be put, ie a kitchen dining room to be counted as two rooms, when describing house size. To my mind it is one, does that make a house bigger or smaller?

    What an odd question. How does one answer when modern housing is now quite often open plan and may even include in an open area a kitchen/dining area and perhaps a lounge area as well? I do resent the collection of every aspect of our lives and I have nothing to hide. It is quite intrusive

Moaning Report this morning providing evidence of how dumbed down NZ has become, running a complaint service about the census. I am in my middle 50s & last filled out the census in March 1991, before I went overseas, but even I knew the census was this March. The 2011 census was delayed 2 years because of the Chc earthquake.

But the questions are why is there even a story here in people being lazy or just outright dumb? And why is so much tolerance even given to such idiots?

Finally, given Espiner was a political hack, surely even he knew there was a census due?

It has been suggested from discussion with a local Rental Company that the lack of rental properties, whilst base on supply and demand, has grown exponentially over the last say ten years is because there are many more solo mothers with X number of children needing somewhere to live.
Men appear to find their own solo level.
She says it is not unusual for a women to turn up with as many as six children to provide for, looking for somewhere to live and believe it is their right for the agencies to do something for them. HSNZ is up to its eyeball catering for the houses they have and the now those sold to Charitable Management Companies are in a similar vein. Being Maori no longer works as everybody appears to be for for the sake of accommodation.
Most have been turned out from previous accommodation due to a very various of reasons – but usually non payment of rent and “tactless” children and visiting Uncles.
Sadly she says that whilst she is very sympathetic many of her rental owners will not have it.
Previous rental experience is usually the guide used.
More and ,more owners are selling up as they are afraid of what the Government will do to them.
Older Social norms have disappeared with the leaving of a more serious gap which cannot be cleared in the short term.
Twitford and Cinderella have all the answers we are told, told, told.
If many women took the free birth control pills it could develop better but that is not happening

  Spoke with an agent before Christmas about finding a house in Auckland for a family member to buy.
  
  Was advised to wait until February, as investors were starting to liquidate their assets due to uncertainty with government policy, and various threats to their income stream.
  
  So right about NOW should be the right time to buy. There has been a noticeable ebb in pricing over the last six months. However, historically housing prices double about every 8 years – and have done so for time immemorium.
  
  There are plenty of houses for sale right now, and the price is not going to get any better if you wait !

    The problem is that “Elders” are well and truely gone. Young Maori are third generation Social welfare clients living “In Town”. There Grand Parents were from different Iwi, so are their Parents.   At the time of the last census 33,000 Auckland houses were listed as vacant. A third of them because the owners were not living there at the time and the rest because the owners chose to keep them empty.
  I’m aware of at least three just around here that are permanently empty. Probably been earning more money sitting there empty than someone on an average salary.

This jury took nearly 8 hours to reach the guilty verdict. They should have reached this verdict in 8 minutes. One wonders how many morons were on the jury. There is not the slightest doubt this scumbag was guilty let alone a reasonable doubt.
This is one of the disadvantages of juries. Some might say no harm done they got there in the end. However, what if the case was not quite as solid and there were 12 dumb jurors?

I wonder if Little and Workman think this POS can be rehabilitated.

      Without being at the trial, hearing all the evidence, or knowing what range of charges the jury were choosing between, then I’m not hasty to make a judgment call on the length of time they took to reach a decision. They may have been a level-headed group of people who took their responsibilities seriously and went through everything a careful systematic manner.

        That would depend if you were innocent or guilty.
        
        The case I was on was rape case. The foreman was the moron. After the the judge’s summing up this clown want to talk a lot of crap. I interrupted I said we have spent three days listening to an absolute crock. It is hot and I am thirsty and feel like a beer. I say not guilty and then pointed to the person next to me and went around the room and the foreman was last and caved.
        
        We were in the jury room for less than half an hour – more like 15 to 20 minutes.
        
        BTW – there is a saying if you are innocent choose a judge and if you are guilty choose a jury.

Was a key matter in the Arthur Allan Thomas pardon, Mark Lundy’s retrial, and Scott Watson’s defence team sure put it front and centre for the jury…to consider. The cutting of the plastic bag with Olivia Hope’s hairs in it certainly raised the question. Personally, I’m still comfortable with the Watson and (two) Lundy verdicts, and have little doubt that cartridge case was almost certainly planted outside the Crewe’s house by someone

Let us say the odds of there being a mistake with cell tower of 1 in a 1000. The odds of both these events occurring is 1 in a billion.

The jury is expected to apply common sense/judgement when it considers the credibility of all the witnesses, partly based on demeanour and any motives for lying/embellishing/misremembering, and that is part of the “looking at the evidence”! Seemed mighty big coincidence that Ewen Macdonald was vandalising his brother-in-law’s property behind his back at the same time Scott Guy just happened to be murdered when there seemed no obvious motive or reason for malicious intent by another soul on this earth, let alone in his community.         We now know the jury were told of his two rape conviction one going back to when he was 15. There was also a DNA match on the 1992 victim.
        
        The law makers here and in the UK were aware of the odd moron who thought that people had to be found guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt not a reasonable doubt. That why in NZ we can convict with 11 jurors and in the UK 10.

      In my experience juries will often take time coming to a verdict even in the most clear cut cases, usually because they are conscientious and work through the evidence but sometimes because they want it to seem as though they did not rush to judgment on a fellow human being. I also should point out that a proper deliberation is not just for the sake of the defendant but for the victim, who is also entitled to proper care from the court process.

        fernglas, I am pretty sure you are a lawyer. As such how would you know what juries think? In my case I went for a beer with toyboy who was falsely accused and his lawyer. I believe that is very unusual but in this case the lawyer knew his client had be fitted up.
        
        I have just seen in the news something that explains not only the time the jury took but the time the trial took. He has been also found guilty of a 1992 rape on the same day as the current case.

A $500,000 Kiwi build home bought with a 3 year 4.99% interest rate on a 30 year term with a $100,000 deposit has repayments of $987 fortnightly which equates to $493.50 a week. Rounding up income to $52,000 a year for simplicity – tax is $8620- net income $43380 =$834.23 a week so mortgage eats up 59% of net income leaving $340.70 to live on.
I am tempted to suggest Twatford has less Brain power than an Amoeba but that would be insulting Amoebas.To be fair to the Minister perhaps he is not aware of the BNZ home loan calculator or isn’t capable of using it, whatever my advice is take a 10 year course on common sense and apply for a job as a sanitary operative being what you are best suited to.

Once a stock falls even a small amount all the sell notices are electronically generated and bang that generates more sell notices.   It’s going to be a very interesting exercise the next few years of Trump. Don’t forget that it was a key campaign promise that he would protect local manufacturers including the steel industry from what he described as unfair trade.
  
  I will be very interested to see how this exercise works out? I know that in the 1980s Roger Douglas and co basically slashed all tariffs which wiped out whole industries in New Zealand. And it has been the orthodoxy ever since – free trade, get rid of all tariffs and somehow all will be well. But I know that manufacturing has not recovered in this country, we don’t actually make anything. Lots of jobs were lost and some people never recovered from that.
  
  So Trump is actually protecting the American worker and looking after them. I would be very interested if labour or national were prepared to look at these kind of policies? I think they could be worth exploring. We could learn something from the American experience in my opinion.

      Milhous- I don’t think with respect that anyone is arguing that we go down the same road as Venezuela. But what I do know is that we had some very good industries, my wife worked for a suit manufacturer, that employed 100 local women as machinists. The slashing of tariffs over a very short time meant that the jobs of the machinists were lost to New Zealand and went straight to Fiji.
      
      How was this good for the New Zealand worker? If some moderate tariff protection was left in place one could argue that these New Zealand women and their descendants would still be gainfully employed here in New Zealand.
      
      The example of a nation doing well with tariff protection would be Japan. The Japanese automotive industry was built on very strong tariff protection.
      
      Essentially we have been doing a massive economic experiment replacing New Zealand manufacturing and New Zealand workers with imported goods. We even used to make trains!
      
      Regarding the Second Amendment Donald Trump is absolutely awesome. He is trying to bring the parties together to make a meaningful compromise that will stop these awful awful shootings. And I think he should be applauded for his bipartisan efforts. And I know once you realise that Milhous you like me, will become a member of the New Zealand branch of the Trump appreciation society 🙂

To keep the costs to a minimum I presume these new houses Twatford is building for new homeowners will be just that, properties without all the landscaping, paths, added extras all new homes need, such as letterboxes, etc installed? Moving into a “turnkey” property adds a considerable amount to the cost of a new house. Are those new homeowners aware it will cost them added thousands to have all these add-ons if the developers/government don’t complete and add it to the price?

  Steel stocks are up but almost everything else is down. It seems that the administration is justifying the tarrifs under WTO rules by claiming it is for National security reasons. Almost half the imported steel comes from Canada and you would think would keep flowing in time of war. Not sure if any of the aluminum ( note spelling ) that will be affected comes from Tiwai but last time I looked we were a US ally as well.

3/ there is no compulsory labelling, and FIANZ currently advise shops not to advertise their certification.
4/ that this halal tax is only promoted by the radical Islamists, many peaceful musims residing here recognise that there is no such command to charge this tax on foodstuffs in the Koran.

This is a submission regarding the proposed Halal Export Assurance Framework. I do not think the State should be sanctioning the description of dogs and other animals as haram. This description can lower their status and promote cruelty to such animals.
I am strongly opposed to being offered in supermarkets dairy products that may have been processed in a halal premises in the same way as export halal products, but is not labelled as such. As occurs with meat because meat producers can not afford to run 2 separate processes. I no longer eat meat, like many others, because we know the halal stun process is cruel based on Massey studies showing large bulls have a secondary circulation feeding the brain for longer than halal stun lasts.
My concern about unknowingly buying dairy that has been halal processed but not labelled this way is that it infringes my human right to practice my religious beliefs under section 15 of the NZ Bill of Rights Act
Manifestation of religion and belief
Every person has the right to manifest that person’s religion or belief in worship, observance, practice, or teaching, either individually or in community with others, and either in public or in private.

I am an atheist and could not buy a product that has possibly been prayed over or blessed in Allahs name as then I would be eating something repugnant to my belief system. I would have been prevented from practising my atheist belief that food ought not be religiously processed before going in my body. It is not reasonable to expect me to abstain from common food just in case, I have a right to be informed of aspects of manufacture outside ones traditionally used for most of our history in NZ.
I believe I have a right to know this kind of food tampering has not occurred so my request is that non halal products be defined as clearly as halal ones are. I think the description is that the product has not been kept apart from the things listed as haram and has not been blessed, prayed over or otherwise religiously contaminated. I would like to see a requirement for such dairy products to be labelled as non halal or as a secular product.

  Fair enough Rodney Randall, and good on you for setting out your stall. But I’m not too sure of the practicality of the compulsory labelling for “religion in food production”. For example, I think the original purpose for the vineyards of the Hawkes Bay was communion wine for the Catholic community, so religion is inextricably bound up in the institution forever. And how do you know the farmer or producer concerned hasn’t prayed on a regular basis for his bounty which you consume? Including resting from their labours on the Sabbath or Lord’s Day. Oh, yeah, and then there are those shrines you sometimes encounter at Indian, Chinese, or other Asian eating establishments. And how do you enforce accurate labelling with overseas imports? Sounds bloody expensive, highly bureaucratic, and for the sole purpose of satisfying a noisy yet small minority. But good luck to ya…

    Irrelevant what religious practices he applies for begging for successful crops. I doubt anyone would care if their wine merchant prayed to Mecca or whether the priest blesses the wine presses as part of a harvest festival.
    
    What is problematic is that the Hallal food has been “spiritually treated” for consumption by a religion (an adversarial religion at that!)
    
    To extend your Catholic analogy, that is a bit like a priest performing transubstantiation (the part of the mass where the bread is changed into the body of Christ). Now I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to buy transubstantiated (??) bread from the supermarket!

      But I wasn’t the one who, on the basis of professed atheism, objected to “food that has possibly been prayed over or blessed”. Rodney Randall was – which, of its very nature will involve the pious of other faiths – be it Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, whatever – making prayer and petition in all areas of their life. Including producing food if that is their livelihood.
      
      But I agree there is a tight rope to walk. Yes, sharia, because it is so all-encompassing, with universal claims over all in some way or other must be guarded against. Or at least to the extent where it crosses the line where one person’s nose ends and another begins – just like any other religion.
      
      But I’m also wary, even though I belong to a competing religion, of an anti-Islamic campaign being the thin end of an anti-religious wedge. I’ll defend Rodney Randall’s right to freedom of region, or non-religion. However, I suspect what he is really wanting is freedom from the presence of religion, one in particular. And in doing so he wants to introduce a bureaucratic system that will inevitably entail all of us paying more for our food. Which, ironically, seems to be one of his objections over halal.
      
      In reality, if you don’t want or like halal – and I stress that is an fair enough opinion in a free society- the onus is on you to seek out providers who will supply that niche. If there are enough of you, then it will be in someone’s economic interests to do so.
      
      And while you may want the state to take special action to target the propagation and or practice of one religion, and good luck to you if you want to try, don’t be surprised if there is kick back. Including from non-Muslims who value the fact that secularism/non-sectarianism means we all get treated the same. Including freedom from illegitimate restriction.

        But let’s not overlook the fact that halal is a rort. It is a fabrication. It is a tax on everyone for the benefit of a few. It also mandates jobs for Muzzies and no-one else.
        
        I wonder if NZers know that internationally halal certification is now being extended to cover all manner of products including non-food items, water, pet food etc.
        
        I’m not sure what the answer to all is this – but I’m not at all convinced we should all just lie back and think of England.
        
        I have seen overseas instances of where halal certification has been brought under government control and any surplus monies raised are returned to the local community.

        Halal is a rort, or halal certification? Former seems to be fair enough as a compulsory requirement for devout Muslims. And in the modern setting, where home kill is discouraged, it seems a good and necessary pragmatic measure to have certification, or some sort of standard. Whjich, of its very nature would seem to require only Muslims to do it.
        
        But yes, not sure the state should be involved in it, other than ensuring hygiene and animal welfare standards are maintained.
        
        But yeah, like anything, including the pilgrimage ethic of the Haj or visit to the “holy places” of Jerusalem, Rome or Lourdes, it doesn’t take long for a whole lot of people to line up to clip the ticket. Is not restricted to Islam or religion, is a fact of human nature if you allow it.

        The logical end in all of this is that every single product (except pork and alcohol I suppose) and potentially service must be halal certified – giving the certifying bodies the license to tax a whole economy for their sole benefit.
        
        It is a rort and must be resisted.

        Yes, they do have an option to opt out, but that’s very risky for exporters and difficult for consumers in an exporting nation like NZ.
        
        Take our meat industry. My understanding is that all animals raised in NZ (except pigs) are slaughtered according to halal rituals and processed in accordance with halal regulations just in case some of it will be exported to an Islamic country or that any of it will be used in the production of other food products and subsequently exported….
        
        Producers just cant take the chance.
        
        So, as a consumer I do not have a choice currently.

        Three problems with that.
        
        1. Neither the market, nor in most cases is the state obligated to provide you with all your preferred choices. Including, as I mentioned above with Rodney Randall, the choice of being free from the presence of religion in the market place.
        
        2. Sure, the supplier may pass on to you the extra costs incurred in providing halal. But that is their prerogative, and yes, still your choice to purchase – or start your own non-halal provider if it really is that critical.
        
        3. But it Is no more valid, to object or ask the state to stop the extra halal-certification costs than the extra costs McDonalds pass on to all their consumers to fund the costs of toys in their happy meals, or children’s playgrounds in their restaurants. Anyone can target and favour whatever demographic they want.

        Ok, thanks. Radiation and chemo over (hooray), slowly but surely recovering strength, but appetite not back to normal by any stretch. Also, due to the effects of the radiation on the tumour (it gets worse before it gets better) it difficult to swallow but I’m still getting enough protein and energy. Snapper from the fish and chip shop – the Hollywood Takeaway in Kelston, whom I strongly recommend to all Westies – and McDonalds thick shakes. All with the nutritionist’s blessing to guard against weight loss and dehydration, ?. Also a bit of minor pain in my right side that the oncologist said may be some side effect on the liver or gall bladder, and they may do a scan, but I’m sure it will not be anything serious, and I’m confident I’m in good hands.
        
        So, still kicking esophegeal cancer’s arse! Anyway, that’s my boring health update. ?
        
        Am going to take March off and relax and enjoy the test cricket. All 10 days, and sixty hours of it. Like a pig in muck. ?

    Also, personally, as a Christian I have no problem eating any food as long as it is prepared hygienically. Ethics such as animal suffering I’ll take into account, but I’m not sure either kosher or halal food count. Indeed, both are wrapped up in a culture of conservation and constraint from what I can understand.
    
    Also, the Apostle Paul in I Corinthians counsels Christians of a “weak conscience” to abstain from food they may find objectionable on religious grounds. In the context of Corinth it was meat in the markets, or even set before you by a host, that was first offered to pagan idols. But for those who take the attitude “the earth is the Lord’s and all its fullness”, then there is no problem, no matter if it came with the prayer, blessing or specialist religious preparation of a pagan, non-Trinitarian infidel or papist! But then I’m not a devout atheist like Rodney Randall, so I guess I’m a bit more adaptable and flexible! ?
    
    Oh, yeah, and I think it is part of the transubstantiation deal that there are none of the elements left around for non-Catholics like you and me to consume, once the bread and wine have been consecrated.

I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan (and his bro Jimmy) at the Wellington Town Hall in the late 80s (?).

It was an excellent concert, we were right up front. He played a blinder. He was clearly out of it and so was I and the young lady who accompanied me.
