So Megan Woods is launching an enquiry (yes, another enquiry) as to why electricity prices have gone up 50% since 2000. When she finds out that virtually all the increase happened under the previous Labour Government and power prices have barely changed since 2009 it might just blow up in her fat face.

    @ JIV – Exactly! Talking about retarded LabGreen thinking and unintended consequences, the early 2000’s also saw woodburners needing to be replaced to meet new compliance standards and in some instances open wood fires banned.
    
    Net result, increased demand on the electricity network (further hitting people’s pockets due to the cost of infrastructure upgrades being passed onto the consumer) and low-income earners (and the unemployed) had a reduced source of cheap (or free) heating i.e. firewood (which coincidentally saw an increase in health-related issues and damp homes, as a dry-heat source was largely phased out. Especially in Flats).
    
    Retarded LabGreens thinking will cause more mayhem and unintended consequences for low-income earners and the unemployed as energy and petrol prices will increase due to their monumental stupidity in banning further oil and gas exploration as Kiwi’s then need to import more oil and gas at the mercy of increasing prices due to international events. All the meanwhile NOT cutting NZ’s greenhouse emissions – the very reason why the Orwellian LabGreens are supposedly doing this.
    
    It sure does take a special sort of stupid to become a virtue-signalling, rick-prick Labour-Green MP, oblivious to the price being paid by the “people” just to make the Labour-Green MP feel so smug and superior, as they shit upon NZ’s sovereignty in order to blindly follow overseas eco-socialism trends!

  I did a back of envelope calculation a few years ago and found that when taking Consumer Price Index into account, electricity prices have increased in real terms by 20% from the mid 1960’s (when electricity prices were at their historic lowest) to the present. A big reason for this increase is available cheap hydro has been exploited and new generation whether wind or coal/gas is more expensive to build/run than the big hydro schemes of the past (these still are the backbone of NZ’s electricity supply and now also serve a valuable backing function to wind power).

    Ah, those were the days when if the need for electricity was there a hydro dam could be built to feed the grid so they just got on and built it. How would we be doing without the 8 dams on the Waikato River? The massive Clyde dam just snuck in before the GangGreens and the RMA made it all too difficult. No wonder the price of electricity is higher than it used to be. See if you can work that one out Megan Woods.

      I have re-done the calculation. CPI between 1964 (when power prices were at ‘real’ lowest) and 2017 increased almost 20 times. Electricity was about a cent a unit then, so the inflation adjusted cost would be 20 cents a unit now. Electricity costs about 25 cents/unit now meaning a 25% increase in real terms over the years. This would vary depending on particular tariffs etc but would be no more than 30 or so %.

The problem there was that prices were allowed to escalate to international norms before incomes had done so. The real issue was not prices, per se, but prices in terms of purchasing power parity. Wonder if they’ll look at that.

But also, before you blame the previous Labour government, it was actually National and Max Bradford for who set it all in place. Just saying, for the record.

  As I said previously, electricity prices increased by 20% in real terms since the mid 1960’s. And electricity 100 years ago in Wellington (before Mangahao Power Station was built by the government) was vastly more expensive in real terms than today.

I have always been a fan of Trump but he has been done by those around him who want to pursue the wrong course.Bolton has tunnel vision and Mattis is dithering.
The alleged gas attack in Syria was a great setup and now Macron, May and Trump have created a terrible situation where from now on any rebel group or terrorist group that want to wreak havoc just have to set a scene and cry ‘gas attack’ and Haleys’ locked and loaded comment to the UN will see more unecessary attacks.No justification.

Theresa May, the second guessing ground-squirrel took it to the Commons for approval and no fucking surprise there there was no approval forthcoming. Jesus, it’s turned into a clusterfuck over the last forty-eight hours. Just glad we have three battleships in the Red Sea.   No, Trump did the right thing. He enforced well accepted historical norms against the use of chemical weapons (dating back to WW1). He showed that when he draws a red line he actually follows it up with action. This enhances the credibility and respect of the USA, which had been eroded under Obama.
  
  He also pursued limited goals of deterrence. He isn’t pursuing regime change. He didn’t bomb the Russians. Its all good.
  
  Even CNN agrees with him on this. That’s why they’ve quickly moved onto Stormy Daniels. CNN cannot abide agreeing with Trump on anything!

      The only difference stephieboy in CNNs position is that with Trump they immediately move on to continuing with their campaign to bring down the duly elected president of the United States. With Obama they would quickly move onto softball interviews, “how do you cope with constant adulation?”. And then they would move onto covering up all his scandals – fast and furious, Benghazi, the IRS targeting conservatives, the Iran deal etc etc etc.

This piece seems to be the most reasoned excoriation of Kiwibuild I have seen and includes some realy embarrassing comments from Jacinda about high density development at Unitec. Calamity Cindy has cracked the Macron factor and he, as one of only 26 nations, will support a discussion on a Free Trade Agreement between the EC and New Zealand.
Well done Cindy.
As expected Macron used an interpreter as of French diplomacy insists, albeit his English language is perfect, having been partially educated and the US and the UK.
I am sure that his English is better than Cindy’s.
In addition I would have expected that despite his opinion polls trending far down below Cindy’s current dropping one – but he has been in longer, and is almost down to Trudeau’s level, that Macron had hoped that one hour was enough in case she decided to have her baby in France which would add to the Immigration problem.
What next – Merkel will be different, and it is she who will also agree to a conversation, hoping that Cindy will go away quickly – she has other fish to fry currently and not listen to the Commie Chic, albeit she comes from a one time Communist Country.

I predicted yesterday there is much more dishonesty and well-poisoning going to happen by Labour as they pursue the destruction of capitalism in NZ.

I thought it would be limited to just economic sabotage, I never thought for a second that the evil would extend to compromising NZ’s security services by letting liars, crooks, cheats and terrorist advocates get access to NZ’s security networks!

The NZ Inspector-General of Security and Intelligence (IGIS) announced the membership of her IGIS Reference Group. It’s heavily populated by extreme left-wingers!

Fake news exponents, hackers and terrorist sympathisers permeate the group. Deborah Manning, Nicky Hagar, David Fisher are the star members among a bunch of academia left-wing activists and a few unthreatening anonymous nobodies. Enemies of the state with access to security info – it would be interesting to know what vetting these numpties were put through (if any at all).

Talk about putting the foxes in the henhouse!

I guess NZ’s Five Eyes intelligence info will rapidly dry up (or maybe this is what the desired outcome was, no way for Jacinda to identify Russian spies if there is no intel!).

      The Blond and I were on a car ferry, she in her car, me in one of mine, both waiting to be signaled to drive off. I had my sons with me in the car. Blond sends me a txt, her normal competitive self – “Im so going to beat you off”
      
      My eldest, on me asking him to do so, reads out the message, as we sit next to the Blond in her car, as he was closest to my phone. We pause for a moment, and then all three of us burst out laughing. The Blond realises what she has said, and joins in. Guys working the vehicle deck that day must have thought were we all stoned 🙂

Israel’s comment has nothing to do with sport. It is a comment by a religious man about his religion.
He did not say that gays should not play sport. People should be able to say what they like as long as they dont incourage hatred or violence. We dont have to believe them or listen to them.     I couldn’t agree more alloytoo. To have put the money aside on a regular basis would have been the principled thing to do; what one might have expected from an “anti-corruption whistleblower”.
    
    Instead however Penny hasn’t put a cent aside, yet she has still been able to travel to all sorts of conferences around the globe, even though she claims to receive no income. That simply doesn’t pass the sniff test, and in many ways, Ms Bright is every bit as opaque as the Auckland Council whom she despises, rather than the epitome of transparency she claims to be.

  In addition, there are costs awarded of over $20,000 to Council. These will be deducted before any settlement is made of net proceeds to Ms Bright.

The battle now is with the dreadful Auckland Council but it began in 2007 with Auckland City Council which was a far better and fairer run entity. Waaaay less UN2030.
  
  It would be fair to guess the amount deductible from sale price is in excess of $60,000 for rates arrears, penalties, and court fees due. Possibly up to over $80,000.
  There will be legal costs and tender costs associated with the sale process.
  
  I am unclear of what $20,000 of this givealittle will achieve.
  As usual Ms Bright is being disingenuous.
  She wants Council to be ‘honest and open’ but she is not being honest and open herself.
  When Ms Bright was campaigning for Mayor in 2016 she posted slogans and shit on Kiwiblog.
  People asked her questions and she did not reply.
  There were few forums where she could interact but KB was one.
  She had the opportunity to interact and explain herself. She did not then.
  She does not now.

  Take direct settlement cost , lawyer’s fees, tender fees etc of $5,000
  So Initial sell price possible of $1,000,000
  Deduct $90,000; deduct $60,000; deduct $5,000 and Ms Bright gets $845,000 net.
  
  Result: Loses the house AND pays tens of $thousand$ as belligerence tax out of her own equity.
  Not very bright at all.
  
  She will have the net $845,000 and can return to her old hometown in the Wairarapa and buy a mansion and have money left over.
  She could get on the South Wairarapa District Council and scare the crap out of them…as payback for Cathy Casey being there then moving to Auckland to scare the crap out of us.
  
  My old boss years ago used to say ‘morals don’t feed families’.
  He was correct. They don’t.
  Surrender to battle another day would have made sense but its seems this is not in Ms Bright’s lexicon.
  In the next week she loses the battle and the war.

      Her track record of not settling dues and disputing things until others give up is the precedent here.
      Track record does not look good for repayment to donors.
      
      What may have been a good idea 11 years ago with a much more reasonable, smaller, more tightly run Auckland City Council has escalated out of sight. Her original argument was with Metrowater even before that. The very dodgy Auckland Council of today was formed in Nov 2010. It is a whole new ball of wax of dishonesty. She is now taking on the tweakers of the UN.
      
      There has been merit in the original cause but the wood and the trees seem to have caused a split in the space time continuum somewhere along the way in Pennyworld.
      
      The good news is Ms Bright will get the government pension in about 2 years and will qualify for the gold card so can travel on Auckland city buses and public transport at greatly reduced fees.
      
      Hint: Taxcinda will need a nanny in about 6 or so weeks. Newly homeless Ms Bright might apply for the role. It could be live in and come with an electric car to zip around in and carry the placards! It is only 2km from the current fortress. With her whistle-blowing skills she could blow the whistle on any air hostess sneaking up the driveway while the esteemed leader is away advising other world leaders.

  The real measure would be fatalities per 100,000 km traveled, rather than total number of fatalities. If you increase the number of cars on the road, then even if the rate of accidents is unchanged, more people will die because there are more people driving.

  So it is very unlikely a figure of 393 is just random noise even allowing for some increase in distance driven. Of course there is the usual caveat that very unlikely things happen randomly all the time.

        Someone above mentioned that Penny’s record with public funds is not all that good…..for example the closing of the ‘Occupy'(?) account.
        
        She has stated that anything raised through the Givealittle campaign will be held in a solicitor’s trust account.
        
        My query is what happens when the bludge doesn’t amount to enough to prevent the sale as seems likely. The funds raised obviously cannot then be used for the stated purpose.
        
        Legally speaking…..how can they be disbursed & to whom?

        It’s an interesting question – and, up-thread, you’ll see I asked Penny to address this point earlier today.
        
        Penny’s GiveaLittle page makes various statements to the effect that she’s seeking money for payment of her outstanding rates.
        If the house is sold, and Auckland Council recovers the outstanding rates amount from the house sale price, then Penny’s debt to Auckland Council will be extinguished.
        
        The moral position – leaving aside the legal position for a moment – would be for Penny to return the money to the generous donors (assuming the GiveaLittle website allows this).
        
        The legal position – leaving aside the moral position because Penny doesn’t seem to have any morals – is that a disappointed generous donor could sue Penny for breach of what’s called a “constructive trust” if she applies the money for a different purpose (eg living expenses). But, in reality, the donated amounts are so low that no one would bother suing her.
        
        So, if you’re Penny, life’s pretty good – apart from the messy house sale business!

        But I’m still wondering about that escrow bit & the solicitor’s trust account. To this poorly educated retired cocky it seems possible that the legal eagle could be considered to be accountable if he released the funds for other than their stated purpose. Which is what Penny was probably hoping to convey in order to maximise the bludge.
        
        Solicitors are not generally renown for leaving themselves open to accusations of misapportioning funds. How do they usually cover their arses in cases like this?

I wonder whether this gentleman is the one who was Dame Annette King’s political manager, or whatever you call it, for many years, and was appointed Chairman of EQC under her watch.
Must be reciprocal as she is currently Chairperson of EQC who with the Little fat Christchurch MP is solving all the outstanding 2500 claims from the earthquake.
