  And, in a press conference with Malcolm Turnbull last year, Jacinda said “absolutely” a lot:

When it comes to your question more generally about the citizenship issue, I would contend that that actually has absolutely nothing to do with New Zealand and nor has it had ever had anything to do with New Zealand.

    Hmm, according to an article I just read, people who use absolutist words like that are more likely to be depressed and suicidal or have other mental issues.
    
    The style of language relates to how we express ourselves, rather than the content we express. Our lab recently conducted a big data text analysis of 64 different online mental health forums, examining over 6,400 members. “Absolutist words” – which convey absolute magnitudes or probabilities, such as “always”, “nothing” or “completely” – were found to be better markers for mental health forums than either pronouns or negative emotion words.
    
    From the outset, we predicted that those with depression will have a more black and white view of the world, and that this would manifest in their style of language. Compared to 19 different control forums (for example, Mumsnet and StudentRoom), the prevalence of absolutist words is approximately 50% greater in anxiety and depression forums, and approximately 80% greater for suicidal ideation forums.

  I completely affirm your right to express that view but first and foremost I absolutely maintain that the World Health Organisation should validate that position in order to avoid any blatant breach of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Government cannot allow such assertions to be left unchallenged without absolutely considering alternative measures and is appointing a review panel to be headed by Mr Chris Carter reporting directly to me, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Health. The panel will work closely with the United Nations and WHO to resolve any issues and de-escalate potential for conflict. The budget will announce an allocation of $500 million of funding for this. As part of the process you will see us continually calling for a multi-lateral approach that will ultimately see the question of chicken salt moving to the WHO and UN.

  Perhaps a legal wonk might express an informal opinion on this.
  
  I would have thought that diplomatic immunity would only apply to criminal prosecution, not civil.
  
  Otherwise what is there to prevent diplomats from refusing to pay for any goods and services? Walk into a restaurant, have a $2000 meal and just walk out.

    The Vienna Convention provides immunity to diplomats from any civil or criminal prosecution. So yes they can walk out of a restaurant without paying. I guess if such behaviour was a pattern, the government would kick the diplomat out of the country.
    
    BTW I recall 25 years ago when I lived in Canberra there was a high profile case where a Libyan diplomat driving a high end Mercedes t boned a small hatchback carrying 3 teenagers. The kids were all killed, but the diplomat was not seriously injured. He was drunk and travelling at high speed.
    
    The Libyans refused to waive immunity. IIRC they got him back to Libya ASAP.

      In 1984 there was a demo outside the Libyan Embassy in London.
      
      Police Constable Yvonne Fletcher was outside on the footpath. A Libyan opened fire from an embassy window with a 9mm submachine gun with a projectile hitting Yvonne in the groin. She died on the footpath.
      
      The Libyan was smuggled out of country under diplomatic immunity and I understand was never prosecuted.

  Simple: don’t rent to or extend credit to diplomats. The EU Mission here has a moral obligation to come to an arrangement with the landlords, especially if the diplomat was transferred by Brussels before her term was up. MFAT are only doing what they have to do under the Vienna Convention.

  Sure maybe one or two would be quite normal, but I’ve never ever heard a PM before consistently use those terms a number of times throughout every sentence spoken.

He doesn’t want to play against some-one who said something.

  I stand with Israel and Maria Folau on this issue. That homosexuality is a sin is a basic of Christian doctrine for 2 millennia. That all unrepentant sinners are going to hell is also a basic Christian doctrine. So it’s not just homosexuals.
  
  But basically Israel Folau is being constantly attacked for stating his Christian position in response to a question. Now you either believe in free speech or you don’t. The fact of the matter is that free speech is under attack by virtue signalling social justice warriors who hate Christianity and just don’t want to hear it.
  
  We also see the politicisation of sports. Sports now have to be “inclusive” which means accepting the gay agenda. It’s a funny thing about rugby but I would have thought traditionally it was defined as being not gay.
  
  I would like to see sportswriters get back to writing about sports and stay away from gay issues, transgender issues and any other politically correct topics of the day. They just ruin sports for everybody.
  
  I hope Israel and Maria stay strong in their beliefs. I hope everyone realises that free speech is at stake. And I would like to see people rise up and speak against the creeping gay agenda that appears to infect every aspect of New Zealand life.
  
  Gay sex may not be compulsory but approval of gay sex appears to be mandatory. That is such a shame. We cannot have a decent society if we approve of such terrible practices.

    The other freedom people have fought and died for is freedom of religion. The US was founded on it. It is a basic freedom 0f our system.
    If we don’t like what some people believe let’s have a go at all of them. How about Islam’s approach to gays?
    I suggest the media should not be asking a footballer about his religious beliefs. That’s their business and nothing to do with football.
    I also suggest the media outrage mob stop making such a drama about what individuals think about gays, tattoos or anything else. We are entitled to our beliefs and opinions, however unfashionable or unacceptable to the finger-wagging Marvelly and Mau crowd.
    We are just not allowed to use our own prejudices to discriminate against others in areas like employment.

    What heartens me the most about this is Folau has told the wilting snowflakes he’s happy to take his game elsewhere and stands by his principals. ARU has shown keen interest in him and good on him if he changes codes. I maintain that if it’s ok for SBW to pray to a pedophile and who’s belief system requires death to homosexuals and oppression of women and yet nobody says a word?     Folau is entitled to his beliefs, and entitled to express them, but I do not believe Folau’s statement on what the bible says about homosexuality is the issue. It’s what the bible says on the matter that is the problem.
    
    A clever journalist would be asking if Folaus wife is allowed to leave the house without his permission, or as allowed to appear in public or talk to strangers, or if she wears a double veil when outside, as these are all stipulated in the bible.
    
    Is her wife considered unclean during her period for 7 days? Does he touch her during this time lest he be considered unclean as well?
    
    Does Folau play sport on Sunday?

        I do acknowledge that he is entitled to his beliefs, and I believe them to be wrong. I would like to debate the issue with him if I could, because I feel his is trapped by his faith, and that the bible, while a good book, has in many ways past it’s best before date.
        
        I do like the don’t kill, don’t steal part, and the golden rule of Christianity, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, (or, simply put, Don’t be a Dick!). But when people use their faith as a shield for their bigotry, then we should challenge those tenets in the same way we challenge the left extremists when we feel they go too far.
        
        The trick is to separate the person from the behavior, and, to his credit, Folau does not hate homosexuals, he just regards homosexuality as a sin that people should be saved from.
        
        I do not hate Folau for his comments, but I take issue with those beliefs.

      As a Christian he is not bound to follow the old testaments rules, Pauline doctrine specifically renounced such. So Israel also isn’t required to be circumcised or to follow the dietary rules specified in the OT.

      Please, do have some knowledge of what you claim. Old Testament rules do not apply to Christians unless they wish to follow them voluntarily. Homosexuality is mentioned and condemned in the New Testament, thus it is part of contemporary Christianity unless the person decides not to follow that.
      
      Most Christians do rather pick and select which parts of the original Pauline doctrine to accept. For example most western Protestant churches have accepted women as priests despite Paul’s invocations against that. Similarly many are entirely accepting of homosexuality. Folau’s view would be the more “traditional” one that being a homosexual is not a sin at all, but practising as one is.
      
      And if as a Christian one believes in Hell, then any unrepentant sinner for any sin ends up there. However one can repent at any time – the Catholics even have a special ceremony for the same. One can repent and sin again, and repent and sin, etc. it’s the final repentance that matters in this belief set.

        You are a bit simplistic about the application of Old Testament law, and also overlook that there are differences between Christians. So for example, the two greatest Reformers took different positions:
        
        Martin Luther: all Old Testament law has been abrogated for Christians unless specifically endorsed in the New Testament
        
        John Calvin: all of the Old Testament law still applies for Christians, unless specifically abrogated in the New Testament.
        
        Hence, Luther and Calvin both agreed what is designated as the “ceremonial law” of the Torah such as circumcision, ablutions and dietary prohibitions do not apply.
        
        Also, they agreed that it is not obedience to the law that bestows God’s righteousness/approval. Also, they agreed that what are termed the first two uses of the Mosaic law still apply:
        
        1. To bring one to a knowledge of one’s sin, in order to induce repentance and availing oneself of Christ’s mercy
        
        2. As the basis of Civil law (bear in mind they lived and only conceived of Christendom as the model for Western government).
        
        However, Luther did not agree with Calvin that the law of Moses, properly interpreted in the light of Christ’s teaching, is a useful and necessary guide for Christian sanctified living.

        Kimbo, one has to simplify, and the positions of all modern Christians are at odds with what Jesus actually probably preached anyway. Christianity evolved from what Paul preached and was at odds with those who had actually listened to Jesus preach, like Peter.
        
        But on homosexuality, Christianity followed Paul, it’s not an OT exclusive thing.
        
        Go Vege, repentance as I understand it (and I’m no theologician) comes from the heart, so if you genuinely intended to repent then the formal declaration is not necessary. And since it is “God” who judges, then presumably the real truth is known.

      It also includes things like heterosexuals should be discouraged from talking about their spouses and children, especially at work, because gays can’t compete and it makes them feel bad. God forbid that this might cause any sense of commonality or bonding between staff.
      
      Let alone the obvious ‘agenda’ in the MSM currently targeting the Folaus.
      
      Just how many heterosexuals have been ‘subjected to abuse and violence for millenia trying to claim their human rights’? There is nothing special about gays.

        I’ve never thought homosexuality should be criminalised – before or after the law change.
        
        Having said that, given the extent of abusive power (and growing) of the gay lobby, to disrupt everything from the most basic right to personal freedom, basic social institutions such as ‘marriage’ and ‘family’, to inspiring real conflict in places like Russia and Turkey et al – I can see why and how a need for such law may have arisen – and why it may arise again.

        One of the things about Christianity is that it focuses on the real problem – the psychopathic malevolent and malicious abuser/torturer/murderer/jailer who has the power to inflict pain and suffering and uses it.
        
        The latter can give any excuse – they don’t like your race, religion, politics, gender, clothing, …. It’s always essential to them that they must ‘save you from yourself’ by forcing you to comply with their will or destroy you – some just enjoy inflicting pain on others.
        
        Christianity has always sought to bring individuals to awareness of their ‘real’ self and invite them to change, to treat other people as ‘their neighbour’ and/or be ‘their brother’s keeper’.
        
        Kimbo has often (I think unconsciously) reflected this when he says that Christianity did not seek to ban slavery – except I think he sees that as some sort of ‘oversight’ on God’s part or a more primitive time.
        
        Christianity didn’t seek to ban slavery et al – because that isn’t the problem. Christ refused political revolution outright. There will always be some people with more and some with less; there will always be ‘tax collectors’ and ‘tax payers’; there will always be gender differences, etc. Christ exhorted people to treat others with respect and dignity, no matter their ‘station’ in life, no matter the type of State they live in.
        
        It’s a humanist distortion of Christianity that focuses on ‘victimhood’ because Christ did not. He always focused on the individual taking responsibility for themselves to treat other people kindly, justly, fairly, etc which he did himself. It is within the self that the problem arises.
        
        No amount of victim groups is going to cure the problem because they just take their turn as abusers when they get power – as the gay lobby is now. And as all abusers everywhere, they claim they’re justified in doing it, for all manner of reasons, and refuse to hold themselves accountable or responsible for treating others with dignity and respect.

The fact that no money is mentioned when Twatford announced the plans and similarly, the council does not mention cost for these developments in jeopardy is a clear sign Tawtford has no clue about any of the costings from start to finish. A few rather important words buried in today’s Herald article “$300m Auckland housing project in doubt”.

…developers not being able to fund their portion means the scheme may not proceed.

6200 new homes at Whenuapai in doubt, with the council also under cost pressure.

That does not augur well for future developments, especially if developers are relying on overseas funding. Several developers went to the wall in the GFC when they could not get funding.

It is also a problem for the government coffers if they have to step in to get projects up and running, or alternatively pour money into social housing to make up some of the shortfall. Or both.

Good news though for landlords who elect to stay in the market. Higher rents and an increasing pool of excellent potential tenants.

It has always been accepted that Grey Power are a left wing organisation but the attempt by one Lloyd Falk to become President takes them further towards being a branch of the Labour Party.
When Annette King was Minister for EQC she appointed her close friend and political assistant employee Chairman of EQC.
It is ironic that King now finds herself Chairp….. of EQC so I would expect Falk to be there trying to sort out the Christchurch problems which a number of people have. He might be good at it.
The fact that the Christchurch Council signed off all the properties under dispute, like the current Tauranga effective condemnation of 21 new properties is deplorable.
I doubt it is an EQC problem however, just a political one in Christchurch but more of a Council one in both Cities.

I think MFAT owe an explanation why diplomatic immunity is being claimed on a commercial debt. Does this mean that any commercial arrangement with a Diplomat is unenforceable especially a lease? It would be simple I suppose to have a waiver of Diplomatic immunity in any lease and maybe Matthew Ryan the Landlord should have sought this.

  The FBI had been investigating the emails a long time before the election and decided there was not enough to warrent Clinto being charged.
  Shortly before the election Comey announced that they were investigating some new email evidence that had come to light.
  I think his reasoning was that it would look bad if they waited until after the election to announce they had reopened the investigation.
  Prior to the announcement Clinton was odds on to win. Her polling numbers slumped after the announcement.
  I suspect that if Clinton had won he would have been gone by lunchtime.
  He may have been good at his job at one time, but certainly seemed to struggle when politics became involved.

  The Inspector-General’s report into the events of late 2016 will be published in July.
  
  I’d be cautious about leaping to fitting up Comey too quickly before reading that report. I think Comey was a weak Director of the FBI. But, from the information that’s already in the public domain, I suspect the IG’s report will point a big finger at the FBI’s New York field office as playing political games with the Weiner emails in order to aid *Trump* not Clinton. They basically forced Comey into a corner where he felt he had to make a public statement, against FBI guidelines.

      Yes, as I understand the sequence of events, drawn from public sources:
      1. On or about 1 October 2016 the NYPD takes Weiner’s laptop as part of their sex investigation of him,
      2. NYPD tells FBI NY office there are emails from Hilary Clinton on the laptop (this happens around 3 Oct 2016),
      3. FBI NY Office starts to leak (to Rudi Guiliani and Joe DiGenova particularly) that they have a new batch of Clinton emails (note that at this time people were referring to the FBI NY Office as “Trumplandia”),
      4. No one at the FBI NY Office actually analyses the Weiner emails until at least the 26th of October. It’s unclear why the delay,
      5. The leaking and agitation within the FBI NY Office is such that Comey feels he has to write to Congress on 28 October to say the FBI has a new batch of Clinton emails (doing this breaches FBI guidelines for disclosing active investigations … and note that by this time the FBI was investigating Trump’s links to Russia but the FBI, properly, does not disclose that),
      6. The FBI NY Office begins analysing the emails on or about the 26th or 27th of October. That analysis very quickly shows the emails are copies of emails the FBI has already got (ie they are not new emails).
      7. Comey writes again to Congress on 6 November to inform them that the “Weiner emails” are duplicates of emails already seen by the FBI.
      
      The FBI’s Inspector-General is investigating the actual events and is due to report back in July. It might be that the truth is different to what public sources have outlined so far. But if the public reporting to date is accurate then this will just make Trump’s credibility even more damaged than it is today.

      A referral doesn’t mean much. I could write a nice letter to the Police referring you for some perceived slight. And the Police would likely put that letter in File 13.
      
      For now this referral letter just looks like a bunch of R’s carrying water for Trump. Let’s wait and see whether an actual investigation comes of it.

    Unlikely story. Weiner’s Laptop contained a heap of emails including classified ones – and Weiner had no security clearance at all. This compounds the offence.
    
    Remember to that the statute on classified information is an absolute one, no intent is required. Whether intentionally or not, copying a collection of emails including classified ones to a third party laptop controlled by a non-cleared individual is more than careless.
    
    Of course what we don’t know is what else is/was on that laptop, and rumours abound.
    
    I would have thought that finding additional emails (including ones deleted on the main server) on this laptop would be not just a cause to re-open the case but to change the original opinion. Of course since it had been pre-determined that HRC Would not be charged regardless of what was discovered finding new info was simply an embarrassment.
    
    Clinton was guilty, as I’ve pointed out a number of times before, beyond doubt guilty, of obstruction of justice, perjury, and security violations that are NOT excused by having “no intent”. That she wasn’t charged is pretty much proof that there’s a separate sort of justice available to the politically well connected Democrats like HRC.

      Yes, finding the emails was cause to re-open the investigation in order to check if they were some of the “missing emails”. But that didn’t happen for more than 3 weeks after the emails were received. And during that 3 weeks the NY office leaked like a sieve that there was a big Clinton email scandal … although no analysis had been done on the emails in question.
      
      Finally, if, as you say, Clinton is guilty beyond doubt of multiple crimes then why have a Republican President, Attorney General, Cabinet, Senate and House not made sure she is investigated and charged? If, say, Hilary Clinton was guilty of selling a big slug of America’s uranium to Russia then why haven’t the Rs not even appointed a Special Investigator?
      
      That none of that has happened suggests to me that “Clinton is guilty” is just a conspiracy theory for the deluded.

ANZ economists say that despite rising construction and land costs, the high existing house prices in New Zealand have made building a house more attractive relative to buying an existing one.

In the bank’s latest Property Focus publication, chief economist Sharon Zollner, senior economist Liz Kendall and senior macro strategist Philip Borkin say the cost of building (based on the cost of a section and a new dwelling) can be compared with the cost of an existing house through a measure known as “Tobin’s Q for housing”.

“Building tends to increase when the cost of a new build becomes cheaper relative to buying an existing dwelling,” they say.

“Prices for existing houses have increased 50% since the start of 2012, whereas we estimate that the cost of a new dwelling (including land and construction) has increased 30% over the same period.

“The location and composition of new versus existing housing can differ, of course, but this comparison gives a general indication of how relative costs have evolved.

  The previous Secretary of State was slapped down when he mentioned the possibility of negotiations with North Korea.

I have seen interviews with US airmen describing Lamason’s behaviour as the finest they’ve ever seen. A natural leader of men.

Worked with Phil Lamason’s nephew a few years ago – he spoke of his uncle in glowing terms.

  Yes, it’s a very good post. The Cabinet Manual is explicit in its instructions for managing conflicts of interest, be they actual or perceived conflicts.
  
  In this case, it may well be that Ardern herself is not directly conflicted. However it could equally be argued that the PM’s Chief of Staff could be considered a “close associate” of the PM, as stated in sections 2.65 and 2.66 of the Cabinet Manual.

    She wasn’t a health professional, she said a trusted friend of hers was also in hospital at the same time as a patient and was quite surprised to see him there (as in, seeing someone “famous” there – i.e. wasn’t expecting it). It was a while ago it seems.
    
    And that was the end of the talkback call, the host didn’t make an issue out of it or offer any conjecture, just expressed some surprise too and thanked her for her call!

National Radio this morning reporting part of a story.

Subject is a ‘charm offensive’ by Moroccan authorities to protect their phosphate exports to NZ. There is a political aspect, as the Western Sahara where phosphate is sourced is disputed territory.

The reason this is only part of the story is that the EU has dramatically reduced the permissible level of cadmium in phosphate and Western Sahara phosphate exceeds this. Cadmium is bad, very bad, and leaches into waterways to boot. New Zealand has not made a change.

So the ‘charm offensive’ is to keep shipping to NZ as other markets dry up because of concern for the health of their citizens.

Where are the environmentalists when we actually need them? Busy with the chicken salt?

  I think that Balance Agri-Nutrients Co-Op Ltd were caught up in this Moroccan phosphate carry on a year or so ago. A 54,000 tonne boat load of the stuff was held up in Cape Town or somewhere whilst the origin of the stuff was questioned.

    New Zeland does in fact have a large supply of low cadmium, low leaching phosphate ready to be extracted. From the seabed off the Chathams.
    
    Initial application to the EPA was declined and the company is preparing to reapply. They are waiting to see what happens with the Trans Tasman Resources iron sands appeal in the High Court this week. (That was also declined by the EPA but a second application was OKd.)

Sorry Countdown lady, I won’t feel ashamed by using plastic bags after Christmas. I will make a prediction now that when the holiday rush is on, and people are fumbling with reusable bags while the checkout queues get longer, the plastic will hit the fan. Then there are the self service checkouts and bags with interesting compartments. When ‘shop lifting’ increases will Countdown simply increase prices to compensate?

  I use a Countdown Metro in Welly CBD. Around the middle of the day there are many many working people buying – a banana, a sandwich, a drink and a sticky bun.
  
  Some of those working people are women with the handbag. A very few are chaps in suits with the manbag.
  
  But there are heaps of chaps in suits or hi vis vests. If Countdown think they are going to keep a reusable bag in their pocket, I have news for them.
  
  Already big queues at lunchtime. Perhaps Countdown will have a stand by picker upper to scoop up the dropped bananas. And pies. And sticky buns.

    Countdown will be running a trial soon to see how their preparation for no plastic bags is progressing for the end of year date. Will Countdown hand out free carry bags at the checkout or are we to expect to be told you have to purchase carry bags when you reach the checkout with a trolley full of groceries?

Am I the only one who watched Angela Merkel treat Ardern like an entertaining, precocious child?

It was extraordinary. The ‘most powerful woman in Europe’ was, I’m sure, grateful for the time-out from heavy responsibility to amuse herself – instead of her unstable government, failing banks, potential war with Russia and risky European infrastructure, war in the ME, Nato, and terrorism throughout Germany, and millions of unstable immigrants – she got to think and talk about Whau, the kiwi, and hug a soft toy.

I can’t imagine what world politics would be like if world leaders all attended press conferences with the MSM asking if they ‘like’ each other. Merkel’s response said it all – ‘Mein Gott’. I’m not surprised.

Her response would have suited schoolchildren for the school newsletter, and I include the MSM in that:

“”Time flew and it was nice, it was very interesting and fun,” Merkel said in response to a question on how she found Ardern. “So you can be proud of your prime minister. If you want to write this down for the New Zealand press. This will be the headline in the morning papers I trust.” Ah, such power, such weighty concerns resting on NZ shoulders.

I doubt Merkel could really believe it could happen but I’m sure she found it ‘nice’, ‘interesting’, and ‘fun’. And laughed all the way to her next meeting at our ‘quaintness’ and naivete. Aren’t we cute?

Here it is folks – the ultimate in green lunacy. Hardwoord forests in Virginia in the United States are being chainsawed, the wood turned into “biomass” pellets, and being shipped to the U.K and burned in place of coal because coal is bad and burning this stuff will help the U.K reach it’s global warming emissions target. It turns out though, that burning these pellets causes 8 percent more pollution than coal. 😆

Huge areas of hardwood forest in the state of Virginia are being chainsawed to create ‘biomass’ energy in Britain as the government attempts to reach targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in efforts to tackle climate change, an investigation by Channel 4 Dispatches has found.

A key part of government efforts to hit its green energy targets is to switch from generating electricity from burning coal to burning wood – or so-called biomass. It’s a policy that is costing taxpayers more than £700 million per year through a levy on their electricity bills.

Antony Barnett, reporter at Dispatches, travelled to the southern states of the USA to investigate the source of wood that is now being turned into millions of tonnes of wood pellets to be burnt in Britain’s largest power station, Drax, in North Yorkshire.

Footage reveals huge areas of hardwood forest in the state of Virginia being chopped down and removed to a factory owned by US firm Enviva that grinds up logs into pellets. A large proportion of these pellets are then shipped across the Atlantic to be burnt at Drax in the UK – one of Enviva’s main customers.

Britain has pledged to cut carbon emissions by 57 percent by 2030 and getting Drax to switch from burning coal to wood is meant to play an important part in that. Drax now produces up to 17 percent of Britain’s ‘renewable’ electricity, enough to power four million homes.

However, Dispatches conducted a simple experiment at a laboratory at the University of Nottingham to compare the carbon dioxide emitted when burning wood pellets, similar to those used by Drax, instead of coal.

It found that to burn an amount of wood pellets that would generate the same amount of electricity as coal it would actually produce roughly eight percent more carbon

So yeh, lets cut down and burn all the hardwood forests that aren’t in your country to decrease the amount of emissions, while actually increasing them.

Picking up my wife from the hospital I was about to drive off when another VW, bigger than my nice little Polo stopped ahead of me in the aproved manner to back into the park I was occupying and indicated it wanted my park.
Fair enough though it meant to get out I would have to go over into the opposing lane to get past
it.
There is stayed indicating a left turn while I was indicating a right turn.
After a while I pulled out and around it and noticed the woman driver … NO NOT an Asian but a dam fool European.
How do some folk get licences I wonder?
My wife who usually would be driving her own car was equally astonished at this woman’s stupidity.

  Experience from driving in the UK, stay well away from female European drivers of VS Turegs. Particularly, around railway station car parks when they are picking up their insurance broker husbands, who just arrived on the train from London.

Oh that was an amazing aviation feat. Tammie Jo Shults who glided a compromised Bird into a landing. Fan blades blew through the casing, shrapnel took out a window with decompression imminent. Which meant the crew had a few minutes of chuckling followed by minutes of panic and scrambling and there could have been lots more souls lost, but she held it together and took it into land like a seagull scrambling for the last mussel.

  Commercial jet engines fail quite frequently (probably 10’s of times per year). It is certainly a novelty, but to describe the pilots actions as anything other than normal is silly. She diverted and landed at closest airport. Big hairy deal, that is not heroism or bravery it is doing the job. They train for long hours in simulators to deal with this sort of issue, and when it happens they are conditioned to know how to deal with it.

    Very few failures generate enough shrapnel to penetrate the aircraft’s body though. So as well as an engine out they had do deal with a pretty rapid decompression incident as well, plus no doubt asymmetric drag from the damaged engine casing.
    
    Not completely out of the box extraordinary, but pretty unusual. I’d bet that the pilot has flown a similar scenario a few times in a simulator as part of her training, which must help.

    Keeping your sphincter nailed shut and the brains on board while undergoing a depressurization that makes you want to you laugh like fuck while dealing with annoying flight attendants who are trying to alert you to a situation that you’re well fucking aware of. And then you’ve got to talk to Air Traffic Control who are saying, “just bank left”. You know it’s not as easy as this, And you just want to grab onto the ground and save souls.

“I’ve lost movie offers, Broadway offers…people think I love Putin and Hamas. I’ve had the CIA question me about being a Russian spy, the New Zealand Police rang me about some sexual assault charge (I don’t even bloody live there!), Exxon have hassled me, some French dude keeps asking for my phone number and to top it off, that Canadian PM keeps asking me to go to India with him. It’s just got too much to bear and this Ardern woman needs to be made to pay”.

This is not the first time a New Zealand politician has been the subject of controversy for character impersonation. Recently, David Seymour from the Act Party was accused of pretending to be the whiny hologram Rimmer from the series Red Dwarf, whereas in the early 2000s, the previous Act Party leader Rodney Hide was accused of impersonating a Sontaran from the sci-fi series Doctor Who.

When approached for comment, Ardern stated she absolutely understands and accepts why Kendrick has acted and she utterly feels for her. She also announced she will establish a working party, contact Woman’s Day and form an advisory group of old white men who have recently been told to fuck off, to comprehensively get the bottom of the issues and deal with long standing, deep seated neglect by previous administrations into the massively important generational issue of climate induced-character impersonation.

It makes me sick actually seeing Ardern with Trudeau “lets turn Canada into a Caliphate run by Chinatown” and Macron “Europe will have to become Africa in the next 30 years because of African birth-rates” and Sadiq Khan “Terrorism is just PART AND PARCEL of living in a big city” (run by a muslims, populated with muslims).

Here’s one for the Kiwiblog experts: Four-way stop sign intersection in Rockingham confuses motorists

Perth drivers already have issues with merging. Now they are being asked to navigate this – a four-way stop sign intersection. Yes, four stop signs at an intersection. What could possibly go wrong?

Main Roads recently installed the traffic measure in the City of Rockingham and it already has motorists confused. Dash cam footage of the new intersection at Flinders Lane and Kent Street, posted on the Perth’s Worst Drivers Facebook page Tuesday, shows drivers coming to a stop and trying to figure what to do next.

The video has already sparked debate on the page with many posing the most obvious of questions, who goes first?

I see Andrew has been “into the mine”, well the front door in truth.
That’s not what he promised but into the mine proper.

The families of those who died in the Pike River Mine disaster say they have taken “one massive step forward” by entering the mine’s portal.

Pike Family representatives Anna Osbourne and Sonya Rockhouse and Minister Responsible for Pike River Andrew Little were among a small group that went 30 metres in to the first concrete seal on Thursday – further than relatives have been allowed to go previously.

Little said walking in with the families was an “emotional journey”, which demonstrated a safe re-entry was possible.

‘We owe it to those families to re-enter the drift and retrieve evidence and the remains of their loved ones.”

Whilst it is sad that Penny Bright has ovarian cancer, which I wouldn’t wish on anyone, her tearful plea on One News tonight that “It’s not fair!” had a hollow ring to it.

Ms Bright has had ample opportunities to settle her dispute with Auckland Council, but she has refused to back down. She alone is responsible for Auckland Council taking action to recover a debt which now dates back 10 years.

On a personal note I wish Ms Bright well in her battle with cancer, but that does not in any way discharge a debt which the High Court has upheld as outstanding.

  But if the test is negative and proves to be a desperate last-ditch attempt at sympathy, it will blow up in her face and deservedly so.

Penny Bright and her fight to save her house from the nasty council has made the TV1 news tonight. She also says she may have ovarian cancer. If that is true Penny then stress is no good for you. Pay your rates and put the fight with the council behind you. You say you are just trying to make the council accountable, but life is short Penny and sometimes for your own health you have to let the battle with the council go. Sounds like it is time to do what your body is telling you. Stop being stubborn, give in and have your home as a safe haven while you fight the cancer. Best wishes for your health Penny.

  Health is not politics. I disagree with everything that Penny does, the way she does it & what she stands for.

The One News item is here.

Two possible scenarios:

1. Penny and Auckland Council enter into a rate postponement arrangement for the full outstanding amount (base rates + interest and legal costs) and the tender process is abandoned.

(This depends on 2 things. First, Auckland Council must have a legal right to instruct the High Court to abandon the process. I’m not sure that Auckland Council has that legal right. Second, someone has to pay the High Court’s administrative costs to date, which may be tacked on to Penny’s outstanding amount.)

2. Penny raises $21,000 on GiveaLittle; Penny pays that amount to Auckland Council; Penny and Auckland Council enter into a rate postponement arrangement for the remaining amount; and the tender process is abandoned.

(This depends on 3 things. First, Penny would need to instruct her lawyers to release the money (held in escrow) contrary to her representation on the GiveaLittle page. Nasska asked a question about this the other day, and I don’t know what the trust account rules say. The other 2 things are the same as for option 1.)

Assuming no one steps in to settle the full outstanding amount, I can’t see (without detailed consideration) any other options.

  Graham McCready: I filed a tender for Penny’s house today. The tender closes on Tuesday 24 April at 4:00 pm. My bid is for $150,000 which is just above my estimate of the reserve set by the High Court Registrar.
  
  So here’s a third scenario: McCready is the successful buyer and allows Penny to continue living there (possibly with a private financial arrangement between them – eg he registers a first-ranking mortgage and eventually gets repaid out of the house sale proceeds).

I have today found a fascinating publication – New Zealand Voice magazine. It seems to have been going for a year and is published quarterly by the genius behind the famous Franklin e-local (https://www.elocal.co.nz/) – Mykeljon Winckel.
This would be rich source for resident parody nutcases JasonJohns and UpandComer.
Besides the usual irrelevant columnists who are obviously not too fussy about who publishes their nonsense – Michael Laws, Don Brash and Judith Collins – there is an entertaining line up of articles from anti-fluoride nutters, pseudohistorians and the like. So if you want to read about the entertaining fantasy that a Nazi submarine was wrecked off Northland in 1945 – this is the mag for you.

UPDATE FROM PENNY BRIGHT.

Ovarian cancer is not yet confirmed – got a 1-2 week wait for results of yesterday’s biopsy.
We shall see …

Feel a lot better having had 5 litres of fluid removed from my stomach.

Can’t speak highly enough about the wonderful medical teams at Hutt and Auckland hospitals from whom I had treatment from Black Friday 13 April 2018.
(Travelled south for a 50 year Kuranui College reunion of our 1968 3rd Form year, Sat 14 April at the Tin Hut – close to Featherston for which I was released from Hutt Hospital to attend).
Had acute abdominal pain early Black Friday morning while staying with my sister in Upper Hutt, so ‘self-presented’ at the Emergency Dept of Hutt Hospital that afternoon, where they Xrayed, ultra sound scanned and CAT scanned me.
Told me to get an urgent referral from my GP to get more diagnostic work carried out in Auckland.
So – that’s what I did.
Was admitted to Ward 97 Gynaecology Auckland Hospital on Monday evening and went home today Thursday 19 April.

(Never a dull bloody moment in the life of Bright.)

Being bullied, harassed, persecuted and prosecuted by Auckland Council for my ‘one person rates revolt’ in fighting for the transparency in public spending on private consultants and contractors to which citizens are lawfully entitled – seems to have taken its toll on my health.

It has been hugely stressful.

(Remember – back in 2010 at a time when I was disputing and refusing to pay Auckland City Council rates – I got a ‘Good Citizen’s Award’ from the Eden/Albert Community Board for work to help stop water privatisation and transparency in Council contracting.)

Ok – do you support my work and are you prepared to ‘put your money where your mouth is’?

(I know the ‘being broke’ thing – if you’re broke too – I understand 🙂
