Captain Mainwaring

This week has been the high point of Princess Stardust’s so-far brief tenure.
Hob-nobbing it with the world’s leaders and getting gushing adulation in the media for her youth, her pregnancy and the fact that she can spin a good yarn without saying anything. Didn’t have to explain how she got the top job by virtue of a bitter old man with grudges to settle.
Next week it will be back to the real world: questions to answer about tanking business confidence, Joyce’s hole which is twice as deep as even he thought it was, banks and builders running away from Twitford’s ‘affordable’ $600K tenements, abandoning helicopter rescue services, screwing motorists to pay for a 19th century tram track, destroying our economic future by banning oil & gas exploration etc.etc.etc.
One can only hope that Bridges and his team have spent the last week heating up the blowtorch.

  At the risk of a stoning… I thought Jacinda had a good week and the international hob-knobbing went well.
  Perhaps that is her strength and where she should consider he future, the tilt at the UN seems to be the common thought and seems about right.
  But yes, We need the blow torch applied and fast.
  
  No offence to DPF and my fellow commentators, but KB is predictable in its outrage (and its valid outrage) over the COL. It would be boring if not to scary!
  
  How long to the general public come around though? and how much of the damage done by these fools will actually be repaired or repairable?

    You overestimate the ability of a government to make fundamental changes. No government has done anything much along those lines wince the mid-80s. So you don’t need to worry, really. The minor changes the present government is making will be perfectly compatible with the very modest ambitions of the next government.

      Jacinda doesn’t seem to realise it, but if the LabourGreensNZF govt continues to undermine the foundations of NZ’s prosperity (eg if farming & dairy next, to follow O&G exploration), then the damage done will be as notable as “rogernomics” was to NZ in the 1980’s (in terms of mass job losses at the time especially in the regions), except this time it will be larger as NZ’s prosperity won’t recover (as it eventually did under the “neo-liberal” reforms).

        The undermining the foundations of NZ’s prosperity is the goal for this government. They know they’re going to be on the outer for a long time and this term is all about embedding destructive policies (that the utterly cucked Labour Lite National govt that will follow – will not reverse) and really ramping up poverdy to create a platform for the great socialist struggle that will herald the end of capitalism.
        
        There is no other rational explanation for the crazed things they’re doing right now.

        We see the nightmarish emergence of London as Europe’s murder capital as the very self-same refugee policies that the CoL wants to introduce here take effect in the UK.
        
        We see the nightmarish and Orwellian ‘wrongthink’ attacks on conservatives under the influence of extremist cultural marxists.
        
        The evidence is all around us of these things that you imply are not real. I reject the thesis that the hard left are utter morons, it’s implausible. And the only explanation that remains is that they’re implacably evil in the pursuit of their doctrinaire goals – just like the idols of their past. And the 100 million deaths resulting from socialism in the 20th Century was possible only through the sort of denial that you exhibit so capably.

      The oil and gas one will have significant ramifications as international investment dries up.
      
      Wasted opportunity as well as wasted money need to reconciled, wasting money on a team set is one thing, the roading infrastructure that is now shelved is another. The opportunity cost is huge.

        Those are pretty piddly details in the big picture. One of the nice things about Kiwiblog is that it has introduced me to some other blogs with posts of better quality. A good example is the posts by ex-Reserve Banks staffer Michael Reddell – ‘Croaking Cassandra’ on DPF’s links on the right of this page. Reddell is particularly scathing about immigration policy, but also very good generally on New Zealand’s fundamental economic problems and the perennial failure by any politicians to address them with anything other than lip service.

    When we were out last night just about everyone was airing their disgust with the COL and the Unions in general. The lone leftie at the table said well has the change affected any of you so far? Implying that we’re all doing really well so shouldn’t be bothered. Then started on about how managers should all take pay cuts and that more tax should be paid to eliminate poverty with higher handouts.
    How on earth do these people think that new employment law and non consultation implementation of ‘policy’ on things like oil/gas has had a real affect on anyone yet. Some people can’t see beyond their nose. Some of these people think that anyone doing better than themselves must be greedy, well maybe some of these people are actually contributing a lot to their communities, providing jobs, and actually care about helping people to help themselves towards a better life.

Interestingly they are heading somewhat in the opposite direction

    I saw that. Political environment then. It’s a pity as it would provide jobs and having played on that area as a kid I never once saw any sea fishing until you come up past the Manawapou river. Lots of river life. eeling, flounders etc in and around the the Waitotara but no fishing trawlers would bother going into the South Taranaki Bight.

        The good old days with Jap squid boats pushing the 12 mile limit. The night horizon was lit up like Xmas.
        
        Our local fishermen made some good money taking local girls out to the boats for 10 hour comfort breaks plus fresh Veges and Kiwi piss.
        
        My kitchen was full of large bottles of number 1 saki and soy sauce. Also some crap Suntory whisky. Cigs tasted like cardboard…

  In my neck of the woods there’s no doubting which code holds sway with Warriors jerseys stretched over big pukus all over the place and the only Blues ones to be seen are on the half price rack outside the local Op Shop.
  
  Yesterday three Mormon guys engaged me in the street outside my house . An American & a couple of PIs.

Works very well among the PI and Maori youth communities, which to some extent are already “pre-churched”, and are more corporate. Once one joins, a whole bunch follow.   He was the original King of Troughs at ATEED as short term, high spending CEO. It was everyone else’s fault that the trains did not run for the opening of the 2011 RWC. Mr Redman is a victim here …and everywhere. Its not fair!

I’ve had a bit of a chuckle listening to the earnest types in Auckland Council, the deluded Penny Hulse, Phil Goff of course, their environmental departments, and other organizations wanting ratepayers to fork out yet more $ to save the kauri, native birds, bats and so on.

We are fast approaching the day where at least half of Auckland’s population is made up of immigrants from filthy nations who give far less of a shit about their environment than they do even of other people and that’s saying something.

To many of our new residents Auckland is about the cleanest place they’ve ever seen. Comparatively it is. They think the environmentalists are literally mental.

Tough sell going forward.

  Last night the news showed a disgusting sight of a river and the surrounding area in Indonesia that was filled and overflowing for miles around with plastic bottles, wrappers, and every sort of plastic you can imagine as far as the eye could see. The president had brought in the army to clean it up (by hand). The people of Indonesia are learning to recycle and make a little cash on the side instead of just dropping rubbish wherever which finally ends up polluting their local fishing villages and in the oceans.

    In the latest Waitakere Local Board agenda, is the latest State of the Waitakere Heritage Area Monitoring Report – an area which includes the regional park and the surrounding residential areas. Ngati Whatua and Te Kawerau a Maki have made high level recommendations to “establish a cogovernance and comanagement steering group for the Heritage Area”. So will this co management group include just those two groups and Council or will their be other stakeholders like residents groups and rural representatives. Will individuals not asssociated with a lobby group be able to submit on governance and management issues like they currently do on plans in their area via submissions to the council? Will this comanagement group be elected. I though our local board was our comanagement group. Will the comanagement steering group be open to the public and keep public minustes.

    And people in Christchurch who thought they had bought a great bargain as the earthquake damage had been repaired and the Council signed them off, but have now found that they should have had a full property property survey done – before buying.
    Is Caveat Emptor appropriate ?
    Was any real due diligence done or did they rely upon the Council sign off ?
    Sadly there has been over 12,000 earthquakes since the major ones we are told so any further damage could have occurred at any time.
    Not an easy solution but taxpayers money from EQC and ex AMI policy holders (still taxpayers money) is possibly the wrong area for compensation – Council signed them off so that is where liability should lie.
    Current insurers not interested in claims not under their policies.
    Finally anyway where are the builders to fix these additional claims ? Not in Christchurch.

    Hey, Hugh: the ‘bloke earns, woman reproduces’ way went out with the 50s and 60s.
    
    Since then a house is expected to be worth two people’s income. It was the same in the 80s and 90s: either buy with your spouse, or with friends, or alone but have flatmates. And many of us needed some help from our parents for the deposit. Nobody could afford a house while young on a normal one-person income. I remember the huge relief when I sold the house (high maintenance and only affordable with flatmates) and bought myself a unit in the early 90s. That’s what a one-person income can and did afford.
    
    And that couple quoted who earn $190 together – goodness me, who could even dream of such amounts when we were young? It’s called *inflation*. If they want years without the woman’s income, it’s time to go for something cheaper.
    
    Otherwise, take maternity leave and soon get back into work.

        Perhaps it is that expectations are too high for many. Instead of buying a house within their ability to pay for comfortably, it is more important to stretch to the biggest and best house to impress. Having to work if you don’t want to then becomes a necessity. The expectations that you can have your cake and eat it too is not new amongst the young, but the number of expensive electronic toys, cars, concerts, overseas holidays, etc, etc is increasing every year. When I think of Winston I am reminded of what an ex Air Force chap told me about Big Norm when he was transported to Wellington for his final hospital visit.   Here’s a lawyer’s view on what happens now (interested in other people’s thoughts):
  
  1. The GiveaLittle terms:
  
  Receipts & Refunds: Donations to a Givealittle Page are unconditional and non-refundable unless the Fundraising Member gives consent.
  
  2. Let’s assume that no one made a “Conditional Pledge” under the GiveaLittle terms.
  
  3. Penny raised $14,364 ($15,120 – 5% GiveaLittle service fee).
  
  4. Penny represented that any money raised would be held “in escrow” with a law firm and paid “[i]n any event” to Auckland Council by 20 April 2019 – in a year’s time:
  
  Funds raised will go towards the $20,000 in outstanding Auckland Council rates to be paid once ‘the books are open’. In any event monies collected for outstanding Auckland Council Rates, will be paid by the 20th April 2019 – it will be held in escrow till this time.
  
  5. The Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 sets out the house sale process.
  The local authority (Auckland Council) “may” apply to the Registrar of the High Court “to have the [rates default] judgment enforced by sale … of the rating unit” (section 67(1)). The Registrar of the High Court “may” sell the house (section 70(1)). The purchaser is “the highest tenderer” if the bid “equals or exceeds the amount required to pay the unpaid rates and the costs incurred” (section 71(3)) – but this is subject to “any rights reserved by the Registrar” (section 71(4)). Finally, in the case of a sale, when the purchase price has been fully paid, the Registrar “must” execute a memorandum of transfer (section 73(1)).
  
  6. The Act doesn’t expressly allow Auckland Council to withdraw its application. In my view, Auckland Council can’t withdraw its application, at least without paying the High Court’s costs and the listing agent’s costs (Barfoot & Thompson). Presumably, Auckland Council would require Penny to agree (in a legally enforceable way) that those costs will be added to the outstanding amount. The Registrar would also need to exercise its right to “refuse any tender” (which would make Graham McCready a disappointed purchaser).
  
  7. So the likely scenario, in my view, is that the sale process will proceed (particularly if Waikatogirl is correct when she says “I’m sure I heard yesterday that Penny had turned down an offer by the council to extend payment time”).
  
  8. In that scenario, Penny will get what’s left after the following amounts are deducted: outstanding rates and accrued interest + Auckland Council’s costs and the High Court’s costs (including Barfoot & Thompson’s costs).
  
  9. Strictly speaking, as Penny wouldn’t have a debt to Auckland Council, the GiveaLittle money held in escrow couldn’t be applied towards the original purpose. If Penny receives the balance (point 8) and keeps the GiveaLittle money (point 3), then she’ll find herself in an interesting position.

    It isn’t about who’s wielding the power within the Party, caucus, or cabinet. It is about who NZers perceive to be their ‘leader’ – their ‘champion’. And they’ll never accept a group in that role, or only secondarily.
    
    Bridges either wants to be NZ’s ‘leader’ or he doesn’t. And if he doesn’t, he needs to get out the way for someone who does.

Hmm for s start she has the obvious feral calling card of a neck tattoo which should have been a red flag . Simply typing her former tenants name into a google NZ search reveals she has convictions for p use , procuring an under age prostitute , has six children the youngest two a judge threatened to take into care, gang associations from when she was working as a stripper while living in a caravan and has appeared in court for violence offences.
The headline could have easily been “ is this NZs worst rental manager?” . Fortunately it appears she owned the house, I’d be furious if it was my place she let to this human crime wave.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has attended dinner with the Queen, making a speech to members of the Commonwealth at the event.

But it was a photo of Ms Ardern in a korowai gifted to her by the Ngāti Rānana London Māori club that stole the attention of the internet.

However, her beaming smile and ‘posidividy’ will disappear in a flash of stardust when she returns to New Zealand and has to deal with the reality of leading a country.

Given that the Nobel committee (when not embroiled, like the good socialists they are, in sexual abuse scandals), set the bar lower than Clare Curran’s IQ for winning a Peace Prize, how are they going to recognise Trump’s amazing success in de-escalating the Nork Nuclear issue without shipping off gazillions of dollars and weapons to terrorist states like Obama and Clinton did?

    I think it may be a little more tricky than that Scott. The North Korean announcement says the tests are no longer needed now that the country has perfected its nuclear weapons. But perhaps the master deal-maker, Donald Trump, will have an especially persuasive tone when he asks Kim Jong-un to give up those weapons.

    A lot will depend on how it plays out. If Kim uses this to ask for a US concession (you know, the purpose of negotiations where each side compromises till agreement is reached) and Trump walks out then Kim may spout that the US isn’t interested in negotiations but rather just issues ultimatums (and throws their toys out the cot if they don’t get their own way).
    
    In a sense that won’t matter for this issue but could make Trump’s life more difficult with other larger players (the EU for example). Actually, NK doesn’t matter at all in this; rather it’s about China vs the US and Kim is merely the proxy (a bit like the posturing going on in the Middle East).

        My view is that, having seen US regime change around the world, NK just wants to make it’s Govt safe (and the ordinary NK people being safe is a bonus too). It has no capability of hitting the US (an EMF is perhaps the nearest they can hope for at present) and even if they did and tried to execute an attack it would be tantamount to suicide. So I see the threat as being a con job by the US pollies (more likely the swamp tbh) for their own political ends.
        
        So I suspect we’ll just have to agree to disagree over this issue.

In the late 1990’s, University of bradford archeometallurgist Gerry McDonnell found evidence ear Rievaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire, Englahd, of a degree of technological sophistication commensurate with the great machines of the 18th century Industrial Revolution. McDonnell showed that the monks were on the verge of building dedicated furnaces for the large-scale production of cast iron – perhaps the key ingredient that ushered in the industrial age. The furnace at Laskill had been a prototype of such a furnace. “One of the key things is that the Cistercians had a regular meeting of abbots every year and they had the means of sharing technological advances across Europe (the Cistercians had hundreds of monasteries across Europe, each a model factory and assembly line in it’s own right)”. The break up of these monasteries broke up this network of technology transfer. The monks “had the potentia to move to blast furnaces that produced nothing but cast iron. They were poised to it on a large scale, but by breaking up the virtual monopoly, Henry VIII broke up that potential”.

Going back to yesterdays thread where I suddenly reminded people that God exists in accordance of induction from the natural law.

Anyone with faith in science absent the operation of the natural law is now demonstrably an imbecile.

Only 6 of 53 ‘landmark studies’ in Hematology and Oncology (blood and cancer) could be replicated during years of trying by Amgen.

These aren’t ‘soft’ social sciences, where we already know almost everything can’t be replicated.

These are hard sciences. These are sciences which doctors use as a reference for decisions made about patients’ endocrine systems. About their blood. That determine cancer treatments. These sciences are supposed to be interchangeable with engineering.

11% validity is effectively random.

11% is multiples less reliable then flipping a coin.

The Neil Degrasse Tyson tier ‘scientodists’ of this world have said that witness testimony should be barred from the court-room because it is too unreliable.

On the basis of the probabilities outlined above, shared in almost every other scientific discipline that isn’t engineering, expert testimony from scientists should also be barred from the court-room. Scientists are liars and they are no better then a random number generator. If we are to apply the scientific method to expert testimony, scientists should be barred from the justice system and policy making.

In fact, if we are going to be consistent with what atheists say, scientists should also be barred from the class-room.

The people who rely upon scientific authority are now demonstrably imbeciles.

How many laws and policies are based on non-existent science (like ECE and palliative care based on non-existent ‘neurogenesis’).

How many patients have been killed because of bloodwork based on results that may have well been gleaned from a voodoo rain-dance in the offices of Julius Malema with Chimpanzees throwing shit into the air and catching it in mouths. By sneering doctors.

But we can completely trust doctors and the state when it comes to euthanasia.

  I’m largely refraining from criticising Penny because of her health issues but this is over the top.
  
  Stripped to basics it has nothing to do with right, wrong, sacrifice or martyrdom. She has spent the money……she by her own admission doesn’t have the wherewithal to pay her rates arrears never mind penalties & costs.
  
  Her’s is not a protest. It’s a way to get other people to pay for her chosen way of life.

      This is a situation entirely of her own making – but she’s the one being ‘persecuted’, ‘picked on’ and ‘prosecuted’.
      
      She has fallen dramatically in my esteem now that it has been revealed that she never had her rates money put away somewhere.

        Retired and bought the Endeavour Lodge on Gladstone Road.
        
        Always immaculately dressed. Suit and tie whenever called for.

A good, clean living Atheist died and went to Heaven. St Peter met him at the door. “You can’t come in here,” Peter said. The Atheist asked why.

“You’re Atheist… sorry. But Hell isn’t so bad. Your friends are there and they say it’s cool.”

The Atheist is depressed but goes anyway, because he was, well, an Atheist.

So he goes to Hell and is greeted by a beautiful green field with people picnicking and having a great time. A man in a white comes over to him and presents himself as Satan and the Devil tells him of all the delights in what appears to be a 5 star resort.

“Wow!” thinks the Atheist. “Hell ain’t so bad! I’m happy to be here.”

Suddenly, the sky gets black and fire spews from the ground. A screaming, flaming man falls from the sky and is swallowed by a crack in the earth.

After he disappears, everything returns to normal.

“What the heck was that?!” the Atheist asks Satan.

Satan replies, “That was a Christian. They wouldn’t have Hell any other way.”

If I was Trump, I would meet Rocket Man, no conditions on the meeting.
But I would say at the meeting, that the sanctions will continue and get harder until you stop all your nuclear testing. Close all the plants,. allow verification And move your artillery out of range of South Korea.
We will gaurantee your independence, and then remove the sanctions
