      I have an interesting take on that.
      
      IOWC Regulations state that in order to compete in the Women’s weightlifting, a competitor must have testosterone levels below 10 nanomoles per litre to qualify.
      
      Following three years of androgen depravation treatment for my prostate cancer, my testosterone levels are at 0.8 nanomoles per litre.
      
      That’s not a typo!

I have always considered Middlemore Hospital as the worst in the country, in part because it is surrounded by true shit hole suburbs. In other news, the new Pale Green half leader warms to those who rip off benefits.

  Espiner was just lambasting Bridges on RNZ for all Middlemore’s failings, and he said, as Coleman has said, that if they knew about it, they would have fixed it.
  They then went on about DHB deficits and asked Health Minister David Clark to come on and he refused.
  He was probably with Robbo trying to figure out how they are going to pay for Dunedin Hospital, a rebuild at Middlemore, and what are bound to be big pay increases for nurses and teachers.

      That is a fair question, what is the executive structure of this DHB and how is their property management run….it beggars believe that in a small country such as NZ there are no fewer than 20 dhbs each with their own executive structures, presumably payroll systems, IT, procurement, HR resourcing systems, that is not to mention the ministry of health staff in Wellington…how much waste and duplication is there in the system, still it has been said that dhb’s were set up to give plausible deniability to the government of the day

Jonathan Coleman has confirmed that the problems of the buildings were NOT an issue raised at any time with Government. There is a lot more to come but the DHB has tried to stifle the flow of “facts” by rejecting an OIA request for meeting details.
      However it seems that it yet another example of having woman attempting to perform well above their level of competence when we read:
      This claim that was made in late March to Morning Report by former Counties Manukau District Health Board chair Lee Mathias.
      
      “Most people in Wellington knew of the situation Middlemore was in,” she said then.
      
      She also said the state of the buildings was covered in board minutes that were publicly available. However, the DHB has blocked the release of these minutes to RNZ under the Official Information Act.
      There might be some hurried “conversations” going on behind closed doors to avoid the inevitable result of throwing too much crap at the fan for Clarke on this one.

        But KS it goes much deeper than that when we understand that there is funding for operating and another process for capital funding. Letting go for so long has compounded what was a serious problem known to the DHB that may not have even been on their agenda paper. The board has blocked the release of relevant documents to Red Radio’s OIA request. Last report they provided the Government was that the buildings were at 89% fit for purpose. Do they mean porpoise as that sounds a bit fishy? Shades of the Cinderella Man with title/turtle that dad would bring home from his title fight.

        We need to increase the levy on all beds sold in NZ. And no, this is not a new tax. The previous levy was zero and didn’t exist, we’re just changing the status of that existence and the rate.

    I suggest the cost of preventing this was as little as $50000 per year to prevent $158million to repair.
    This is mismanagement of the highest order.

  I did a contract stint moving around all the northern DHBs. One thing you don’t realise is that each DHB is made up 30 plus buildings, big and small, and at different locations. The main middlemore hospital is quite new and impressive, the Super clinic they seem to be referring is a different building

  You will all recall the scandal a few years back about the DHB executive who misappropriated funds to enhance his own lifestyle, including the purchase of a huge yacht:-

  and there have been others – recently the guy from Waikato DHB who spend mega dollars on travel ?
  
  It’s not that the government don’t allocate sufficient funding to run a suitable maintenance programme, more so that there will always be vultures within the various DHB’s who would prefer to have a yacht or a Porsche rather than spend money on maintenance, and devise a way to extract those funds from government coffers.
  
  The answer lies in centralising and focusing a smaller number of DHB’s. On each DHB there should be an engineer responsible for plant and equipment spending, whether it be refurbishment or replacement, and each DHB should have a financial “vote” where money is quarantined for future works.
  
  My mother worked as a radiographer in a suburban hospital. She was always amazed when, approaching the end of a financial year, the bean counters would arrive in her office wanting to spend on carpet, furniture and equipment so that their cash surplus was spent, and then replenished for the following financial year. They made it clear that if any money was left at the end of the year, then their budget for the next year may be reduced – hence lots of inappropriate spending !
  
  If that hospital had in place a mechanism where unspent money could have been saved without prejudice, then situations like at Middlemore may never have happened.
  
  It’s the model that is broken !

That is who is responsible for repairs and maintenance, that is who is responsible for eliminating waste and from what I hear there is plenty of that. Fix the managers and their Directors.   A teacher I knew said she did not believe in unions but belonged to NZEI as it would provide legal support for teachers who fall victim to this sort of thing. She must have been mistaken since NZEI seems to be nowhere to be seen when one of its members (assuming he was one) is a victim to such a conspiracy.
  Hope the teacher filed a personal grievance after being fired (needs to be done in 90 days) so he can claim back pay.

    Just to clarify the story, Chuck, he was acquitted a year ago, although the catalyst forhim speaking out seems to have been the more recent acquittal, and Peterwn, he wasn’t fired, but kept his position after an inquiry, having been suspended on full pay. That said, the notion, as espoused by Oranga Tamariki last week, and held both institutionally and personally within a number of organisations, that children don’t lie about these things, is pernicious. In the wrong hands, it can mean that the Police will prosecute so that children don’t get hurt feelings, or that children will be taken away from parents on the basis of unfounded allegations. These two teachers are but the tip of that particular iceberg

    Me, I’m highly suspicious of the sprinter who set world records in 1988 that no athlete has since come within cooee of.
    
    The sprinter in question was Florence Griffith-Joyner (‘Flo-Jo’) who recorded times of 10.49 secs and 21.34 secs.
    
    The 10.49 secs time was set at Indianapolis in, I think, the US Trials that year.
    
    The 21.34 secs time was in the Olympic Games Final at Seoul.
    
    She blitzed the fields in both Finals.
    
    The respective winning times at the Rio Games in 2016 – 28 years later – were 10.71 secs and 21.78 secs.
    
    Flo-Jo was American, of course, and wouldn’t dream of dabbling with performance-enhancing substances, right?
    
    Just as no Australian cricketer would ever even think of ball-tampering.

        Well, she was tested (and it is said she was singled out for extra attention) but passed every test she took.
        
        Some other athletes expressed doubt at her ability to improve so rapidly (including Ben Johnson), but no drug use was ever demonstrated. The sudden 0.5 second improvement in both 100 & 200 metres events she ascribed to a new coach and regime.

      The drug use in Eastern Europe was State sponsored. It was seen by them as part of the Soviet v West dispute. The Sovs and the Easties even had a drug down training programme. Certainly the weightlifters should make a stand…. maybe not every female, but the weightlifters should protest for sure. I think we have reached a turning point in politics now with the overwhelming election of Marama Davidson as the Greens Co-Leader.
Shaw has done an excellent job but will be very quickly made to know his place as Co-Leader, like he was with the cheat Turei, who Davidson has forgiven, and will find he has been by passed by the radical Greens very left wing Social movement, despite being a Minister. The overwhelming vote has shown this as it is believed his personal preference was for Genter who would have made a more balanced Co-Leader who has shown she could worked well with Shaw.
What does this mean effectively that the Green Party will split into two sections the radical left wing SJWs with a Maori bias, and those who believe in the original role of the Green Party as an environmental body.
It is obvious from a number of sources that the Cinderella led Government is not pleasing many of the more radical Labour Party voters and it is they who could well move towards the SJW division of the Greens in order to get a party over the 5% threshold.
Labour will be the losers in this spat.
If we assume that Winston’s Party will not be around after the 2020 election failing to make the 5% then there will be a choice of left wing parties – the Union Labour Party led by Little, and the Radical Marama Davidson led SJW party.
The Shaw led group will fail to get 5%.
As Confucius says “May you live in interesting times”.
It is going to interesting to watch if these machinations move forward – no reason they will not, and quite quickly.

  Paulus, this is the same Genter who recently suggested that older white men ought to resign from company boards to make way for women and people with different coloured skin. Yet, as you say, she is nonetheless more “balanced” than Davidson. Things are going to get very “interesting” indeed.
  
  As cynical as it may be, I think the Greens have made an excellent choice. Davidson should be encouraged to spew as much SJW vitriol as she can come up with. Ardern will be in a position of choosing either to allow herself to be tainted with the stench of said vitriol or to distance herself from it, which would bring the divisions within the coalition into stark relief.
  
  New Zealanders, by and large, dislike extremists, so Davidson’s elevation might not only be the surest and fastest route to the reinstatement of relatively sane government; if we’re fortunate, it might also see the Greens consigned to political oblivion.

If you have a huge knowledge of Russian politics 1950-55 you will love this movie. Go and see it. If, like me, your knowledge of Russian politics 1950-55 is scratchy, the subtle humour will go over your head. It was only after reading many reviews that I realised what I had missed in the movie.

The test however Is still waiting qualification in Canada.

    These types of fire extinguishers were invented in 1869 and used between the years of 1870 and 1910. They would be stored on metal brackets on the wall. If there was a fire it would taken out of the holder, and throwen at the fire. The liquid in the clear glass often had a blue or red coloring agent and contained carbon tetrachloride (CTC).☠️☠️☠️

      More than once I have seen them in the engineroom of fishing boats and similar craft. Apparently if there were a fire then the glass ball would shatter, releasing the Carbon Tet, and extinguish the flames !

  Crime has always been a problem.
  
  First they did away with home owners being able to use firearms to protect themselves and their property.
  
  Then they did away with hard time and the death penalty.
  
  Then up to the ’70’s the police used to be able to stop and search , stop and question people abroad in the streets. ( within reason).
  
  Then this was attacked as anti civil rights and as more immigrants came in it attacked even more vehemently as “racist”.
  
  The police and politicians ran scared .
  
  Crime took off and now they’re desperately trying to recover. It won’t work. Too late.
  
  The funny thing about all this wowser shit is , the very “communities” most victimised by this crime wave are the ones the politicians and civil libertarians were pretending to protect.

Congratulations to Hungary and Viktor Orban on an increased turnout and a clear outcome. Not like the hung Parliaments elsewhere.

It may not seem much to me but clearly reveals an increasing participation in the democratic process.

They know what they want, as well, despite the best efforts of the EU and George Soros:

“With 74.6 percent of votes counted, National Election Office data projected Fidesz winning 134 seats in the 199-seat parliament.”

I assume that’s why Soros has turned his money and attention to trying to overturn Brexit – nothing like fighting against democracy everywhere when you’re very, very rich. Can’t have all those ‘uppity little/poor people’ making their own choices.

I don’t know how many of you remember events of a month ago? That is two cyclones in quick succession, both caused significant concern and destruction to the lower North Island and upper South Island (particularly Nelson Bays and West Coast).

Following the cyclones passing by, we were then, subjected to rocketing fruit and vegetable prices and we were deluged with headlines such as:

At the time, Mrs HullKiwi and I observed prices of vegetables in the supermarket did rocket. Many of you would say so what, that is market forces and the market says if you can’t don’t want to pay, then don’t. Well exactly that did happen. People were not buying the overinflated priced stock, so much so that my wife witnessed cauliflowers that when beyond their shelf life were being thrown into skips. What a waste to prove a point?

Move on one month, you can imagine our surprise when we drove into our local supermarket to do our weekly shop and out front was a billboard for Cauliflower at $3.99 (NZ product), when not less than a month ago the same product was $10 each at the height of the growing season.

The sad/depressing thing this is not an isolated example of how NZ fruit and vegetable prices are being manipulated and the consumer is told to put up or shut up.

Over the previous 12 months, we had headlines about a potato shortage (October 2017), yet in February we were being told how we were supplying Australia because Australia had a shortage.

Also last February/March, surprise, surprise NZ experienced a cyclone season and once again there were headlines about rocketing food prices at the height of NZ’s harvesting season. In fact, you can pick any year and you can find the same types of headlines. Reality people, NZ always experiences bad weather patches in February to April – it is the end of the cyclone season after all.

So, what is really at the cause for the level of price manipulation at the supermarket?
The answer is the MARKET, or in reality the lack of a market.

New Zealand does not really have a truly competitive fruit and vegetable growing market anymore. Over the decades, lazy (or inept) politicians and bureaucrats have allowed the market to become dominated by a handful of large grower companies, for there to be only 3 nationwide distributors of vegetables, and for there to be industry associations who do their utmost to ensure prices are manipulated to stay high.

These people do not care what prices are paid at the shop till, what food is wasted, or the fact that the bulk of NZ production in some fruit and vegetable varieties has in fact been exported.

So, what NZ has, and what governments of all hues have allowed to perpetuate, is monopolistic cartel regimes that are meant to represent the interests of the grower members. However, in fact act as the conduit to ripping off the consumer and taxpayers alike, while serving smaller non-corporate growers poorly (does this sound familiar – e.g. Apple & Pear Marketing Board etc?).

  Depends on where you are. We’ve always had access to alternative suppliers, independent resellers, for fruit and vegetables. They buy at auctions and despite your beliefs (having been to some), they are pretty competitive.
  
  May not be quite the same in central Auckland or the like, but mostly, independent retailers do exist though you may have to seek them out and not just shop at the supermarket.

    Turners & Growers). These same companies control the auction market. In turn they control the release of vegetables on to the market in order to manipulate prices in league with Horticulture NZ.

The sale of NZ clothing maker Icebreaker to the American VF Corporation brings a nice payout of $288 million to shareholders.

Good on founder Jeremy Moon for building up such a successful business, and let’s hope more New Zealanders who will emulate him.

But can we not be proud of such success without gabbling on about how the sale was for the good of the company?

Rob Fyfe, the former chief executive of Air NZ, and chairman of Icebreaker’s board, is reported as saying:

“”The opportunity to join VF’s stable of globally recognised brands and to be able to benefit from their expertise, consumer insights, distribution and operating scale presented Jeremy and Icebreaker’s board with the best opportunity to realise our ambition to become a $1 billion brand.”

I’d rather Fyfe had said something like: “We got a great price, and that’s a tribute to Jeremy Moon. What a great brand he’s built. New Zealand needs a few thousand more people like him.”

Matthew Hooton raises some interesting questions about the Middlemore Hospital situation.

Earlier today, Muttonbird has made some serious allegations against National and Jonathan Coleman, but it seems that even LABOUR MP’s weren’t told until just a couple of weeks ago:

But even if it is only half as bad as portrayed in the media, which presumably it is, then why was it not reported under the no-surprises rule to then health minister Jonathan Coleman, new health minister David Clark and local MP Louisa Wall – all of whom told RNZ on 28 March they hadn’t been informed about it?
After all, the no-surprises rule is now seen to include everything, including leaking Winston Peters’ superannuation problems to the previous government. The rule clearly applies to a sewerage-in-the-walls-of-a-hospital situation.
If things are as they are now being reported, it seems there must have been some type of cover up by the District Health Board not just during the term of the previous government but since the change of government.
If so, the board and the CEO should all be sacked, obviously for any cover-up but even just for not following the no-surprises rule.
So who is feeding the story now? And why?

  That’s not entirely surprising a response, and actually strictly legally correct: their disputes process is only there to deal with complaints where a person claims they have been discriminated against by another person, for example, being turned down for employment due to gender, ethnicity, disability etc without their being any reasonable justification. There is nothing in the Act the specifically prohibits people making sexist, racist or ageist comments (such as those made by JAG) at least where they are not evidence of some discriminatory action by the speaker. In any event, Jackie Blue (who alleges to have been a National MP in a past life) said she supported the idea behind JAG’s comment, so your complaint was an exercise in futility.

I don’t know how many have watched the coverage of the Commonwealth games but I have tried & find it impossible. I have tuned to the radio instead

They show some irrelevant sport when a more important event is on involving a kiwi.

How TV1 think they are going to cover the rugby world cup is beyond me

I see the MSM are running a few stories about how overpopulated our prisons are. I suspect they are being fed these story by Andrew Little.

One that caught my eye yesterday spoke of how few prisoners there are in the Netherlands and highlighted the difference in the percentage of the population are in prison there compared with here.

Clearly they don’t have many Maori and Polynesians in The Netherlands, and I suspect if you counted how many “European” prisoners are in prison as a proportion of the general “European” population here in NZ- we might find we are about the same as the Netherlands.

The scary thing is, he is planning on opening the doors and letting some very dangerous people out to do as they please and know they won’t be punished, and all based on some pretty flaky stats.

NZ cannot be compared with countries in Europe to model incarceration rates.

  Her headship of the Commonweath is only titular, so it shouldn’t be a problem. Only a few Commonweath counties such as our own are not Republics, with their own President as Head of State. And some, such as South Africa and Pakistan have been readmitted after they previously left. And some, such as the former Portuguese colony of Mozambique were never members of the British Empire, but at their request were admitted anyway.

      Hmm. That’s interesting. Rwanda was part of German East Africa/Tanganyika until the Belgians in the neighbouring Congo took it off them in 1916, and then it was awarded to them as a League of Nations mandate in the same way we acquired German Samoa.
      
      Not quite compensation for the sack of Louvain and the summary execution of Belgian peasants when the Kaiser’s army did it its big wheel through neutral Belgium in 1914 as per the dictates of the Schlieffen Plan, but good to see the plucky Belgians got some licks back on the beastly Bosche.

    Not sure “cheat” is the best, or even the best way to describe Hubbard, especially as that is about the worst slur one can throw at a sportsperson. Isn’t Hubbard’s fault, but rather the blame lies at the feet of administrators. They should implement separate competitions for transgender athletes, as already exist for Paralympian, mentally disabled, and also age-grade junior and masters competitions.

      …and having just watched Laurel interviewed on TV, irrespective of the controversy and the agendas that some from various ends of the political spectrum want to inject into the particular circumstances, they were the dignified words and sentiments of a genuine competitive athlete. And being able to compete at the highest level possible should be the goal which administrators facilitate for all athletes who are sufficiently motivated and gifted. Is sure why I got involved in sports administration.
      
      But I still think a distinct transgender competition is the right way to implement it.

I play sports myself so I understand the motivation, but think that it leaves the other competitors at a distinct disadvantage. Hubbards first lift blew every other competitor away, where is the honour in that?

Sophie Pascoe is as fully-human as any able bodied and/or transgender athlete, yet she competes in her own distinct comp against athletes similar to her. And irrespective of the number of contestants, and because she trains hard, and wins…only the mean-spirited who have little understanding of the spirit and purpose of sport begrudge the effort and achievement.

      I am glad she failed today, relieved for the competition who didn’t deserve an unlevel playing field.

At the presser today they were blaming National for doing sweet F all during the last 9 years and leaving a right Royal mess.

  I think a realistic approach for any opposition party contemplating government would be to assume that the incumbent liars and cheats will have found ways to hide a few unpleasant surprises. New governments of all stripes are usually caught out that way. Of course they can blame it on their predecessors, but they can’t do that for very long at all.

    Like the story of the newly-installed leader of a banana republic who, on sitting down at the President’s desk on the first day in office, was presented with two sealed envelopes. On each was alternatively written:
    
    “Open this when you first can’t get out of trouble”
    
    …and:
    
    “Open this if you still can’t get out of trouble”.
    
    Initially the new leader was full of ideas and enthusiasm, but within a year the problems mounted and seemed insurmountable, and public support was ebbing away. Then he remembered the envelopes. On opening the first he found a letter from his predecessor which read:
    
    “Blame all your problems on me”.
    
    The President promptly initiated a PR campaign based on that strategy, and for a while his popularity rose. However, a year later the implacable problems remained and the PR strategy was no longer working. Remembering the second letter he opened it and read:
    
    “Clear out your desk, leave the office, and before you go write two letters for your successor”.

Those Shot-putters are mongrels. Yep I’m doing my patriotic duty following the games. Even though my days have swapped to my nights. But you can drink and cheer any time of the night, right?

Woman’s 10,000 meters is going at a good steady gallop. Jeeper’s it’s like eating a roast chicken after you’ve dropped into KFC. A bit of an ordeal.
