  Not that uh, not that that could ever happened. No not when the entire media in the US is controlled by like 4 whole holding companies? Similar thing in Australasia, and throughout europe. No its not like a small oligopoly of oligarchs could ever get together, and set their agenda….

    Disagree in two respects.
    1) When it comes to NZ news on Trump, it is not 98% negative — it is 100%.
    2) When it comes to USA news on Trump, things are much more balanced. Not that we would ever know of it here, but the negative news on Trump is slightly less than the positive news on Trump.

      She would most probably be given a brief opportunity to lodge an appeal or to either pay her rates or seek postponement on compassionate grounds. Not sure how much time she can ‘buy’ with an appeal, she would be unlikely to be granted leave, but if so AC could ask for a deposit to cover costs.
      There was obviously nothing in her argument that the CEO, not Mr Town had to sign the sale application – after all Mr Town is the CEO.
      Para [13] of judgment says “On 27 April, Woodhouse J held the Registrar may accept the best offer but otherwise take no steps until this application is determined.”
      I read this as meaning that the highest offer could have been accepted by the Registrar and the successful person (Graham McCready or whoever) informed. So except perhaps for a very brief ‘window’ the sale is all ‘go’ with settlement a month down the track. It could be stopped again, but this is unlikely.

      The Council can, if she asks. However as the Judge pointed out she has refused to ask. The Council cannot give rates relief under the Act until the ratepayer makes application. The problem is, Penny still wants the Council to accede to her extraneous demands. I think the Council could let it go until she or her executor sells up, but that would be unlawful – Bill of Rights 1688 (UK) which is also NZ law and particularly Fitzgerald v Muldoon.

        She is meeting council at 3.30, she says so she might be biting the bullet.

        That’s correct – in other words the prospective buyer factors in eviction costs.
        
        The High Court registrar oversees the house sale process, so the prospective buyer would reasonably assume that the High Court registrar will take whatever steps are necessary (including engaging a “qualified security professional” to forcibly assume possession of the house and hand it over to the prospective buyer).

        Nostradamus – The sale would be ‘as is where is’ with no obligation on the Registrar’s part to ensure vacant possession at settlement. In the Manurewa case last year the purchaser asked (and was granted) the Court to hold back $100,000 to allow for costs incurred for eviction presumably including further court orders. A bidder may not be sure of this so would apply his own discount as well.
        While she would be liable for legal costs directly related to the sale (which would come out of the sale proceeds), she has forced the Council to incur further legal costs which may not necessarily come out of sale proceeds but a court would most probably order this to happen. However if the Council grants a postponement these costs may not be included as rates arrears when the house is sold in due course. Hence the Council would probably need have her to agree that these costs would be met in due course through a mortgage or similar.

  I disagree with the judge. The power is always with the people to overthrow tyrranical govt.
  
  Penny is a polarising person. I do not agree with everything she has done but if a few more apathetic rate payers got off their fat arses and refused to pay their rates councils would quickly change their tune.
  
  The only reason corrupt councils continue to rort and missapropriate rate payer funds is because they know the vast majority of rate payers are gutless cowards.
  
  The corrupt judges would be powerless to deal with 50000 rates defaulters.

    Large scale tax revolts occur when people perceive their government to be fundamentally corrupt, useless and tyrannical. They are literally the prelude to revolution.
    New Zealand is not remotely in that situation. If we are then so is every other nation in earth.
    So Penny’s revolt is fundamentally misplaced. She is not the harbinger of the revolution.

    There have been some rates revolts but they collapsed pretty quickly when the councils concerned asked the mortgagees to pay the overdue rates.
    Very few have tried deliberate tax revolts, IRD holds all the trumps and the Ace of Spades. In the first instance the IRD can simply raid the taxnonpayer’s bank account.

      Until taxpayers/Ratepayers directly target those imposing unpayable charges like happened in Scotland with their Poll Tax – a good basis for tax badly implemented and explained. Work it out Councilors and IRD offials are few in number and becoming a pariah locally and finding you cannot shop or fill the car etc and you quickly decide its time for some sick leave, simply refuse to do as told or leave – system collapse.   The Palestinians have not been trying to enter Israel for a picnic, and it can be guaranteed that the Hamas fighters with automatic rifles, machine guns and RPGs would follow, if there was a significant breach in the border.
  
  What would happen then?
  
  The answer to that question is easy: there would have been a major armed conflict that would have left hundreds, if not thousands, dead.
  
  The Israelis have been acting with restraint, and they have, so far, saved many many lives on both sides.

    The council is not corrupt. Penny is in fundamental terms a good old time socialist.
    She believes that the council should own & operate all the means it requires to deliver the services that it delivers. Therefore in no way should it buy services from the private sector.
    
    The best example is public transport services. She believes AT should be a modern day ARA & AT should not be using private operators to deliver services. Consequently, she has been trying to prove that all procurement by AT has been corrupt. Her campaign on this matter has been irrespective of any facts to the contrary.
    
    In pursuit of her campaign she has wasted substantial amounts of council resource and money all to no avail. This lost money will never be recovered, leaving council & the government with the bill. Some public watchdog?

      Our rate money which the council has wasted over the years also will never be recovered. Think $200k curtains, $20,000 plus moving furniture for meetings, lunches for staff which you wouldn’t get at the best restaurants, Queen St offices which could be in Manukau but it doesn’t have the view, a department called ATEED which the staff can’t be found in their office because they’re out for lunch on the ratepayers. I could go on and on and that’s what Penny was all about – how they spend our money. Over half the rate money collected goes on salaries – that’s over $1.5b in case you weren’t aware.

Still no update from Simon Bridges about what the new policies of Labour Lite are? More virtue signalling about the ‘needy’ and ‘deserving’ inbound, veilled by non-comittal statements?

It’s amazing how long he can go, and how much he can say without uh, taking a position on anything. I thought Jacinda Ardern was good at that, better than Peters infact, but this Simon, he is on an entirely new level, ofcourse what do you expect from a smooth talking lawyer?

Really missed a handfull or two of opportunities since his innaugeration, to lash out at the self-destructive Labour party and draw a clear and definitive distinction between the two Labour parties.

Could have really humanized himself as well by talking about his experiences as a crown-prosecutor, and relating them back to the plan to release these people out of prisons… Really could have turned the tables on Jacinda their, making her out to be the big baddy who doesn’t care if criminals come to your house and…

Oh well, I am sure that there is 2023, or 2025 if they extend the electoral terms..

Obviously I don’t have a problem with Simon, uhm, its just that really from an ideological standpoint with his endless virtue signalling about the ‘needy’ and ‘more deserving’ and ‘not spending enough’, I think it really shows that he is in the wrong party.
    
    And some people will vote blue regardless of their policies, they treat it like a silly little sports game/team, they mock and call the other side names, and do all sorts of meaningless high-school drama BS, but the adults here know that politics is about more than ‘your team’, it’s about setting the policies of government which due to governments over-reach effect every aspect of everybodies life.
    
    And thats why we can’t support a party without policies, without convictions, who treats the next election like an exercise in rebranding and marketing, a game, where the prize is a nice car for 3 years and a small payrise.
    
    The fact is that Simon is not the right leader, his approval ratings is about 1/4th of what the party got in the election. Its becoming clearer every day, the sooner they roll him the better, lets not give him a second chance in 2025 and try for real at 2030…

      He is in a tricky position. Labour are pumping out lots of false propaganda about the last Government and when the actual truth emerges it very seldom hits the mainstream news. On the other hand lots of money is suddenly flowing in all directions now which means people know there will be consequences down the track but they want that money now. Simon needs to be patient and I think he is showing that. Labour want to empty out the prisons and Stuff site is obliging by pumping lots of articles in support of this. We know this policy will be a disaster. Hiking significant costs onto small business will be a disaster. Hitting farmers hard will be a disaster.
      I could go on with policies that could have severe negative consequences.

Does saying nothing work, does it achieve anything, no, not at all! And anyone who says he must not say anything because the media is biased is just making excuses!
        
        In order to grow his voterbase he needs to demonstrate to those people on the fence, that Labours policies are bad, that means when they flaunt their bad policies, i.e. that they will let people out of prison, why not make a point of it, and relate to it on a personal level as an ex-state prosecutor, it would have humanized him de-humanized Cindy, taken her shiny sheen off of her image.
        
        And he needs to demonstrate that national is an alternative, a better alternative, that they have better polices, they need to have better policies, and when she talks for instance about ‘affordable housing’ point out that it’s no more or less affordable than anything else being built in this country, that its a scam, a rip-off, that her numers are wrong, and she is out of touch if she thinks it’s cheap!
        
        Point out that it’s a bad deal compared to what you can get overseas, that the market is overpriced, and that if she thinks the soloution is government project managing realestate development, she doesn’t understand what the problem is or how to fix it. And then talk about the real issues like the inflated costs of building materials, the restrictions on the supply of land etc..etc..
        
        I am sure that he is welcome every now and again, when there is some sort of a scandal, to go on the Mike Hoskings show, and incite everyone against this useless bunch. Its good for ratings, its good for the polls, everyone wins. Instead he just virtue signals about the needy, and deserving, and complains that they don’t spend enough. May as well rename the party to labour while he is at it!

They say a week in politics is a long time so I think Labour will be very lucky if they can get to 3 years without cracks showing.   It is reprehensible that Israel is machine gunning all these New Israelis. All the New Israeli’s are trying to do is build a new life for themselves and their children, over the wall.
  
  The New Israeli’s deserve welfare and legal protection, not bullets. Israel needs to listen to it’s diaspora about how you should treat New Israelis. Give them welfare, and wreck free speech for them.

        I don’t know how the work permit system works in NZ, but I’m guessing the visa is organized by the employer and once the work is completed the worker must either leave the country, obtain a different type of visa or become an overstayer.

83% of a packet of cigarettes costs are now tax. So that means a packet of smokes that costs $35.00 is actually worth about $4.00. Imagine if the fuel companies, or any company were earning such obscene profits from a product (which incidentally mainly target the poor).
The tax is now doing the opposite of its intention by ensuring children go without proper food and clothing while their parents smoke.

  Interestingly, A packet of cigs in Japan is around $5. Smoking related deaths are 0.1% of the population. A packet of cigs here is 7 x that of Japan and smoking related deaths are around 0.1% of the population. This proves your point Agent, no matter how much you increase the price the same amount of people will die regardless. The only beneficiaries are the government coffers. The standout is the black market and the increase in robbery and violent crime directly proportional to increases in tobacco tax.

    Some schools already organize breakfast for kids who turn up in the morning with empty stomachs because they don’t get fed at home for whatever reason.

    It’s a known fact that people under stress are more inclined to smoke, and one of the major factors in causing stress is poverty. Drop all tax on cigarettes and suddenly the poverdy will be less.
    
    Assuming a person smokes a carton of ciggies a week, under current law that costs a whopping $350.00. If you dropped the tax it would be $40.00.
    Doesnt take a rocket science to see that would raise the living standards of children more than any Government initiative.

      As much as I would like to believe the government (of any ilk) dropping the tax on ciggies, it’s very unlikely. That said, It would be interesting to do the numbers. So, presently (as of November 2017) there are 605000 smokers in NZ. using your numbers ABS, $187,000,000 in tax. What is the current COL budget for child poverty and related spending? I bet it’s well over $200M. If any government announced this they would be a shoe in. Conversely, imagine the incandescent rage over in the ASH do-gooder”s camp 🙂 I think it’s a bloody good idea and think the statistics will likely remain the same at 0.1% related deaths. It’s obvious swathes of smokers didn’t give up at the last round of hikes so hardly likely to encourage others to start just by being cheaper. As as mentioned in an earlier post, the black market dries up in one fell swoop. Bold, but a good idea.

        I neglected to add the downstream costs of policing the robberies, loss of trade to the retailer, damage to property, costs in the judicial system and last but not least, prevent the deaths and injury of dairy owners and others on the front line. I imagine we are talking 10’s if not hundreds of millions in these area’s. Freeing up police time and lessening the need for more officers? Sounds like a win-win to me.

One is about Salimbhai Wadhwania, a taxi driver found not guilty on seven charges of indecent assault.

A second is about Aniket Sumeet Kumar, going into a four-day trial on sex charges including eight of doing an indecent act on a child under 12.

The third case is about Barry Alan New, described as a well-known flasher, who pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary.

      Kachin Christians have been persecuted and killed in Myanmar for about 70 years, since they helped the Allies in the Burma jungle war. There are pitiful refugee camps for them in Thailand.

  Jesus I’d love to have ten kids-But my wife and I carefully planned and budgeted for what we could afford..(And had kids later once we had paid off Student Loans, most the Mortgage etc)
  It’s called Personal Responsibility.

Looks like EAD has been proved wrong…..

One of my main lines of argument on this blog is that the whole left vs. right (and all the various isism) has been forced on the West since the French Revolution as a means of dividing the populace while other groups act purely in their own interest and tend to speak with one voice.

But it looks like the heavily financed Jewish lobbies (collectively they are worth $37 billion) in the USA are in some serious disagreement:

Three Jewish organizations — the National Council of Jewish Women, the Anti-Defamation League and HIAS — accused the Zionist Organization of America of inappropriately criticizing them; in turn, the ZOA filed complaints against member groups that have yet to be scheduled for hearings.

The complaints range from differences as picayune as who is responsible for anti-Zionist signs at a mass rally to intimations of corrupt intent to allegations of violence…..

HIAS complained about a ZOA letter to the Forward in January of 2017 charging that HIAS invoked “morality” in defending refugees because it receives “millions of dollars” of government grants to resettle refugees — essentially saying it defended refugees out of economic self-interest.

And ADL’s CEO, Jonathan Greenblatt, submitted to the Presidents Conference a six-page letter and an Excel sheet with 36 complaints against ZOA dating back to 2007. Many of the complaints focused on ZOA claims that the ADL was not fulfilling its mission in defending Jews and Israel. In one instance, which the ADL called “grotesque,” Klein complained to the Jerusalem Post in April 2016 about ADL’s criticism of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump’s attacks on refugees.

“The ADL should be fighting anti-Semites and Israel-haters, not helping to bring them to America to join the anti-Israel lobby,” Klein said. “Does the ADL enjoy seeing horrific Muslim activities in Europe against women and others?”

So in summary, one of the Jewish lobbies who spends millions of dollars lobbying to bring more refugees into the USA is in conflict with another Jewish Lobby (who also campaign to bring in more 3rd worlders into the USA) because some of the refugees might be “anti-semites”.

  The biggest issue is not the Jews but their enablers. Jews are a tribal people who work in their own best interests, as do others. Jews are just better at it.
  
  If Jews were treated like everyone else then they would not have so much power, but nor would they be such a target.

So the country’s first citizen Shane Jones announced today that the forestry service a launching a website that will count the trees being planted.

Given NZ First haven’t had an operable website since the Govt was formed, I won’t hold my breath.

PS: Yes, I know the only reason NZ First don’t have a website is because they think that means no one will see their pre-election promises and bottom-lines being broken on a daily basis.

Argentina’s currency has fallen 22 per cent against the US dollar this month, reports the Telegraph.

It cites as a cause the country’s current account deficit, which has reached 5 per cent of GDP.

Correct me if necessary, but I think NZ’s current account deficit was 2.7 per cent of GDP in the September 2017 quarter.

Let’s hope dairy output and tourism inflow hold up, at least while the US dollar is rising. Too bad we no longer have the lottery dream of a big oil or gas find.
