    As I stated yesterday I have just taken up an AA promotional offer of a five week free sub to the Herald. It is now day 5 and this mornings edition is still in the mailbox. Gone are the days of family members rushing madly for the news, sports or business sections – the Herald is now an irrelevance. The Sunday and Monday editions have just been consigned to the blue bin unread.
    
    I wonder how many thousands of copies are distributed free to maintain their proclaimed circulation numbers.

Plus to launch incindiary devices into Israeli farms. Plus organise stalls and music to create a weird carnival type scene.

Yet when some of those get shot it’s Israel’s fault?

Will the Greens be assaulting Chinese officials with Tibetan flags the way their previous leaders’ have done – you know, because “it was the right thing to do”? Or are they selective about the importance of human rights when they have a chance to destroy the NZ economy?

Will the government be taking on the Chinese about their selective approach to democracy after having come up with novel term for dictator “Premier for life”? Doubt it!

Why aren’t the MSM calling out the massive double-standards of the government who were always able to find something “humanitarian” to protest about when in opposition, yet find themselves able to lie down with the same dogs with a clear conscience when in power.

  The top Kiwibuild pricing is supposed to be for standalone houses, with much lower pricing for terraced housing and flats.
  
  The link below has two pics of the first Kiwibuild dwellings in the McLennan 600 home subdivision. The pic of Mr Twyford in front of the framing shows these are not standalone. However, the artist impression is not clear on that point – hard to tell if they are terraced or not. If terraced they well exceed the Kiwibuild price limit. Noting they are described in the article as ‘houses’.
  
  So is this more price fudging coming right up?

Prefabrication or house-building factories are no “silver bullet” for the stretched residential construction sector, says an industry chief whose businesses use traditional techniques.

Commenting on his expectations for Thursday’s Budget, Grant Porteous – managing director of Deacon Holdings which is the master franchise holder for more than 20 G.J. Gardner building franchises – said prefab housing was no quick solution.

“The Government is being misled about prefab plants or modular housing being a silver bullet and dramatically reducing the time and cost of construction of new homes. That is giving false hopes and misleading many people. I can demonstrate quite the reverse is the truth. That is, modular housing costs more and takes more time to build from conception to the factory to completion on site,” he said.

      Slumping business confidence in the sector was confirmed today with the release of the readymixed concrete data for the March 2018 quarter.
      
      Only 913,000 cubic metres of readymix concrete was poured nationwide in March, a -5% drop from March 2017. This is the largest year-on-year fall since 2009.
      
      Part of that retreat is the wind-down of the Christchurch rebuild.
      But a surprisingly large fall in Auckland is the real driver.

So I hadn’t heard this discussed but Labour/Cindy announced the touchy-Feely “$21.5m OVER 4 years” for some “8,000” early childhood spending to help children with learning difficulties/special needs to get help early. But the math on this doesn’t work, that is $5.375m per year, 8000 kids, is $671.88 per special needs child or $12.92 per week per special needs child. Given the minimum wage is $16.50 this is like 3/4 of an hour per week, any pay higher than the minimum wage and that means less for the children. All these calculations are based on all the money going directly to the children and no administration bureaucracy, which we know is not in Labour’s DNA.

  Someone on here yesterday stated that a friend of theirs went to a teaching conference recently and Cindy was speaking at the event and all the young women teachers were literally in tears listening to her speak. Well on my tablet I let someone set up their Facebook account (my stupidity) and there is a diverse range of friends, cousin’s partners, friends of friends etc. Anyhow after Labour announced the funding for ‘domestic abuse’ I noticed a couple of this person’s friends posting a link to Cindy saying “Thanks Labour” etc. Now family friends are allowed to have different views, and that is fine. But I looked into where she and her friends celebrating work and guess what? They will be receiving this newly announced funding. Talk about pigs feeding from the trough.

  But Harkman the sheeple see only “how much” their Government is spending on these unfortunate children largely from dysfunctional homes. The majority notice the move to spread it over four (4) years and even break it down as you have in a rougher manner wondering what it will actually deliver.
  Lest we forget it was National who saw ECE as the primary means to address this problem by putting a little pressure on beneficiaries to place their children in ECE as a first step to education. Also getting more young children in the public eye to try and reduce abuse while them getting time out from a dysfunctional family environment. Now it seems some children like it so much they are reluctant to move onto school classrooms highlighting another wrinkle in the ECE system failing to help prepare them for school.

  Ha, listened to him talking about education, and he was whinging about how there are more ‘needier’ people ‘more deserving people’ y’know typical sort of socialist ‘we pick the winners bs’, how about not having any of these handouts, and letting people keep more of what they earn, but I digress, not only was he a poor an ineffective communicator, but he had the policy wrong to begin with…
  
  I mean first of all I think the costs of free tertiary education are being vastly exagerated on all sides for political reasons, the government spends about 3.5bn on ~200k students in terms of tuition subsidies which until now were 70% of course costs, so obviously the 2.8Bn figure that they are citing includes additional ‘handouts’ and ‘grants’ (to universities) and/or is over multiple years (which is cheating, and missleading and deceptive). Because we are talking about an additional 3/10ths of 1/3rd increase in tuition subsidies…. And that is in the millions not billions of dollar range….
  
  But my biggest gripe is he just doesn’t get it, assuming a 25k per year tuition cost (including subsidies), a 12 week semester, with 2 semesters per year, 4 papers per semester and one 3 hour lesson per paper per week, you are at a cost of $600 per person, per hour, or with a 30 class room average size an $18,000 per hour class-room fee… And this is being generous and using an AUT style model which is more focused on workshops and whatnot for teaching than big lectures like normal UNIs, and ignoring lectures, and being generous on classroom sizes…
  
  The point to all of this is that $18,000 per hour per classroom or $600 per hour per person for classroom based education is far higher than any comparable market rate education course in NZ. It’s ridiculous, even 1/3rd of that rate is ridiculous at that scale of economies… These universities are taking student tuition fees, and using them to employ a very, very large number of ‘expert academics’ and beaureucrats, Auckland UNI has over 10K such people, and they are vastly overpaid, and they provide almost nothing for it…
  
  He should be addressing that problem, ringfencing and marketizing tertiary education, and looking to claw back all 3.5bn spent each year on tertiary education, and they can do that, and cut tuition by >70%, and reduce tertiary education costs to students, and they can have their pie and eat it too! It’s not about ‘who is more deserving’…

  So I went to see the 2003 World Athletics Championships in Paris. Anyhow this was before smart phones and laptops, so I went looking for a cyber cafe one morning. After getting lost down narrow alleyways I finally found one. I walked in unsuspectingly and looked up and I was the only none Muslim/Arab/Persian in the place. They were all in the 30-55 age range and they all stopped what they were doing and looked. I instantly thought “f_ck me” and bolted out the door and fast-walked/ran 200m before turning to see and there was like 15 or so middle-aged North African men out on the foot path looking back. I instantly thought, that was some sort of terror cell or something suspicious and they were extremely hostile to white people and it was all going on under French noses. And French intelligence officers had the nerve to coin the term Londonistan. For years I told people the place was Paristan and that an attack was a matter of time. But it took a while, but now it is started there is no way they can control it only minimise it.

  Presumably judge reserved his decision at yesterday’s hearing. AFAIK the basis of her claim is the Council CEO should have personally signed the papers requesting a court ordered sale. If she prevailed this would seem to win her another 6 months since a sale request has to ‘lie on the table’ for 6 months. She also threw in a humanitarian argument in the hope of influencing the judg’s decision.
  
  I have earlier thought (and copped downticks) that the Council should just leave her alone since accrued rates penalties will exceed the interest on a similar amount the Council has to borrow. In the light of her apparent condition there is even more reason to leave her alone and that is what should happen. OK it could be argued that it sets an undesirable precedent but it would be extremely rare that there would be a similar case – for starters all home owners with mortgages cannot try this stunt since the lender will simply pay the outstanding rates and add it to the loan.

      She has not won – as I explained when the house finally is sold, the purchaser’s lawyer will ensure rates including penalties are paid up to date and accrued penalties will exceed the extra interest the Council had to incur on account of the rates deficit. Win win for the Council. It is now lose lose lose for her being the consequence of living in a dream world.
      Of course she is playing the system, the Council should just stop biting and let things take their course.

        sooty – It looks unfair to other ratepayers, but they are not actually out of pocket on this one. Any sane person recognises you lose by not paying rates when you see the penalties mount up. There are special exceptions such as the Mangawhai ratepayers saddled with extra rates for cost over-runs on a sewage scheme – they went to court to argue the legitimacy of their rates but at the end of they day they were unsuccessful.

I just saw an ad here ln this page advertising quality bed linen for hire! It said “hire quality bed linen” or something like that.

Imagine being so disorganized and/or stupid that you can’t wash your own sheets! One or two of us (I won’t name names) might be so useless… but generally speaking I think we can manage simple tasks like doing the laundry.

  There could be valid reasons for not washing bed linen eg mother with new born child, both parents running a business with hefty demands on their time, etc.
  Nappy hire has been around a while which saves the family time, do not foul up the washing machine and avoids the adverse environmental effects of disposable nappies. So why not bed linen, towels, etc.

We keep getting told about the big investments in renewable energy overseas. Prices are dropping, it is getting more competitive etc. etc.
That is not what is happening in the European Wind Farm business. They told us all that financial incentives and subsidies were required to get the new technologies up and going. Now as the older wind farms are getting to the end of their lives they are putting their hands out for more subsidies to do repairs or renew the farms because if they do not get the subsidies it is not economic to continue !!!!
Maybe WoO can go over and help them out–he always seems to have the answers.

I have just spent an hour looking at Photos and videos of the demonstrations in Gaza. I must have looked at at least 100 photos of protestors being carried away or lying injured. Not once did I see a drop of blood. It seems that a large number of the injuries occurred from the Slingshots misfiring and going in the wrong direction. I trolled through lots of sources, including Arab ones, and saw none of the bodies from these reported deaths. I’m not saying there were none but I felt there has been exaggerated reports. “Hospitals were said to be at breaking point, running out of blood stocks and their mortuaries filling up with the dead. A girl was among at least eight children killed, the youngest 14. More than 200 of the wounded were under 18, according to the Palestinian authorities.“

    A note to DPF –make sure Bridges is told to come out very loud and clear about this, stating National will reinstate the Charter Schools. I think he has already said this but it needs repeating very loudly. This is golden opportunity for the Opposition to show they have some backbone

Hopefully she has a big surprise coming.I;m old enough to have seen a few ladies have babies and even when its not the first there are plenty of things to go wrong and things to do. Oh and the tiredness thing. Mothers need sleep too. I guess the man will be supplying the food via a bottle. Imagine all the negative press about the bottle feeding regime.

But then I doubt Jacinda is the motherly type. Reckon the baby will be treated like many others. A nice to have as an ornament.

  This is a similar story to what we were fed day after day pre-election. Now it’s the softening-up process pre-budget for tax increases.
  Remember the woman with five children who was living in poverty and then turned out to be on holiday in Europe? And the holiday before that was in the US.
  Then there was the woman in really dire straits but it wasn’t disclosed until after the story that a big part of her situation was due to a number of criminal convictions.
  The msm seems to now have two strands of “journalists”: idealistic, inexperienced young people wanting to to be sjw’s, and cynical seniors out to cause a swan song of embarrassment.

I can answer Kate Hawkesby’s question re Meghan Markle et al.

It’s not possible to ‘wrap up’ one or more committed ‘vultures’ who want to make money out of their ‘celebrated’ family member. Every moment would be circulated to the paparazzi, subjected to controversy and argument. Piers Morgan was right. The family are all ‘little vultures’ – and lying, scheming, crass, self-obsessed ‘little vultures’ at that. They’ve found a meal ticket and they’re never going to let it go.

There was a reason that the royal echelon used to keep everything ‘in-house’ – a big part of it was to maintain some sense of dignity. The only thing the palace can do is keep right out of it as far as is possible – because it’s not going to stop – but they don’t have to willingly provide the fodder for it.

The worrying thing is that Meghan Markle is a ‘Markle’ – and Harry is desperate to marry/have children. He’s never been particularly wise. It might all be ‘cute’ now, but it’s a disaster waiting to happen. His most responsible course of action would be to mercifully distance himself from ‘royal’ life/roles but he’s not that mature. I wonder how long Meghan would want to stay around if he did.

The teachers’ unions were unhappy about plans for bulk funding of teacher salaries as part of Tomorrow’s Schools- an aspect Goff later removed from the legislation Lange had drawn up.

Goff’s moves to introduce a student loan scheme (later canned because the banks would not take part) and charge university fees of $1250 had not gone down well among students used to free tertiary education. Goff’s argument that it was the only way to prevent capping student numbers fell on deaf ears.

    All these people blaming farmers for not complying with the Nait system have obviously never tried to use it. The website is an absolute dog – most farmers have wasted so many hours entering every animal individually only to have them all disappear, again, that they have given up.

      That’s interesting about the NAIT system milkmaid. So, from what I can gather, the scanners haven’t worked properly and now dairy farmers have to manually input the stock transfer records? This has led to a decrease in compliance?
      Also, Stuff has just posted another article on this – Why NAIT failed in cattle disease outbreak – and what’s being done about it

        A few years ago, I saw that when a farmer applied for a NAIT number, that where he signed up for that, (with signature) he accepted liability for the costs of any damage his computer system may do to the NAIT systems or computer.
        
        The next part was that the NAIT computer system, if it did any damage to the farmers computer or systems, then they would not accept liability.
        
        Sure shows the great confidence that NAIT had in their ideas.

        The scanners not working is a separate problem. That wouldn’t be as bad if the website worked. But more often than not after you have entered, individually, a group of animals that has entered your property, it disappears from the system. You enter it again – same thing. Spend an hour on the phone with them and enter them over the phone – next day they are gone again. Cattle that have died years ago seem to stay on there no matter how many times you register their deaths. Animals you have never seen or heard of can arrive into your account. It’s so clearly inaccurate there doesn’t seem to be much point in trying to get it correct.
        
        This government needs to get that sorted asap – even though it is probably too late for this disease, that is something they could start with right now. But they will probably need set up a working group to talk about that for a while first …

Well blow me down.
The High Court has refused Penny’s application to restrain the Auckland Council rating sale.
That means the sale can proceed.
I suppose that will not be the end of the matter as there will be an attempt to appeal to the Court of Appeal but I cannot see that getting any traction.

  He said there were other options such as Ms Bright entering into a postponement arrangement with the council.
  
  “Ms Bright’s personal circumstances favour relief. So too consequences if relief is not granted: Ms Bright will lose her home, perhaps at undervalue. The significance of the above is distressing.
  
  “However, there is very little prospect judicial review will succeed,” the judgment reads.

I have read the decision. It is quite succinct.
The Public Records Act has no bearing whatsoever on her liability to pay rates. She has been offered many chances to resolve the matter. Previous courts have told her that her argument is untenable. While sympathetic to her situation, the court noted that she could always pay the rates or accept one of the compromises offered by the council.

Her situation vis-à-vis the council is entirely of her making.
Her application for judicial review has no prospect of success. There is no evidence of malice at all. The council has a statutory obligation to collect rates in fairness to other ratepayers.
These sentiments have been expressed on Kiwiblog for many years. She has dismissed them out of hand.
The consequences are now at hand.

I hope that Penny listens to the Judge and enters into a rates postponement agreement. That way she will keep her house.

  I agree Alex. Ms Bright has told the Court her days are numbered and that she has inoperable ovarian cancer. In the circumstances, I am sure Auckland Council will do the humane thing and grant a postponement, but she must now start paying something.
  
  The ball’s in your court Penny. As I suggested the other day, live out your last months/years with dignity, and sort your debt to the ratepayers of Auckland out.

Judd is right about one thing: “There are two laws in New Zealand, one for the general population and one for Māori.”

That’s the problem and the majority don’t like it. Like Hobson’s Pledge, the majority want “one law for all” – and that’s a very reasonable goal. I’m also inclined to go for a ‘poll on all wards’, rather than none.

Judd says, “… To highlight out the Māori seat is divisive, it’s cruel. … The majority won’t let it happen.”

That’s right. Having one law for Maori and another for everyone else is utterly divisive and cruel to everyone. Legally forcing it through isn’t going to make it any less ‘divisive and cruel’ – just the opposite. That this is the case gives the absolute lie to NZ being this mythical ‘happily multicultural’ country where it’s supposedly accepted that some people are more equal than others.

How can Judd think it’s any better for the majority to be disenfranchised in their own country? Nobody is suggesting that Maori shouldn’t participate in society like everyone else. They’re just saying that everyone should participate equally.

Is there a benefit to progressively setting NZ up for real civil unrest? History shows you can force the population to accept ongoing inequality and undeserved privilege up to a certain point, then all hell breaks loose.

Perhaps that’s inevitable, given that Maori have been demanding ”protection money’ for decades now to prevent their active aggression. They’re on a lucrative gravy train but have any social statistics improved? Perhaps, also, we should get it over with so we can make some progress as one country.
