  And furthermore on all things Trump – remember when Trump tweeted last year that the Obama administration was spying on him? And he was roundly lambasted as paranoid by every media commentator.
  
  Well it seems clear that the Obama administration was spying on the Trump campaign and the incoming Trump administration. They don’t use the word “spy”. They use the word “informant”. And it was for Trump’s own good because the Obama administration was just keeping tabs on the Russians. And so it’s all okay, move on, nothing to see here.
  
  Actually this is probably one of the biggest scandals in US politics ever. The whole weight of the Obama administration including the FBI and the Justice Department and the mainstream media actively colluded to stop Donald Trump becoming president and then to derail his presidency once he assumed office. They spied on the Trump campaign which was exactly the type of offence that Richard Nixon was pilloried for decades ago.
  
  But the truth will come out and it will not be pretty for CNN, Obama, James Clapper, James Comey and a whole host of thoroughly disreputable characters. Trump was right. He was being spied on! And that is disgraceful.

    If you get up in the morning, dry your washing in the lounge (because it gets stolen off the line), lock the house up and go to work and not wonder where all the water goes when you find your clothes dry.

    No, it is an ad for curtains to be included in the minimum standards MBIE is to put together for the Parliament under the Healthy Homes Guarantee Act.
    
    Not just any curtains, have to be thermal of course.
    
    And only for rentals, owners will just have to buy their own as they are excluded from the HHG Act.
    
    The $61o per family HHI get, according to the article, is just not enough for curtains. They want more money. What a surprise.

      The curtains don’t care. If they are not ventilated and washed sometimes expect mould.
      Expect legislation following a panel of experts investigation local and overseas and report on:
      “Requirements for landlords to be responsible for tenant mould prevention and other stupidity arising out of any tenancy or other disposition for a term fixed or otherwise of any interest in any property that would otherwise be deemed habitable.”

    Perhaps they could have used the photo at the following recent link – the one labelled “The door in Tipora Grennell’s Christchurch City Council-owned unit, a block building that gets little sun, is black with mould.”
    
    Only problem is there is no curtain in the photo, but if there was it would be ideal for the article. The tenant is clearly unacquainted with regular cleaning.

Vance has now re-invented herself over to the Dom Post.Not to be outdone by the attention seeking drama her buddy buddy mate “Hallucinating Homophobic “Mallard got . Vance has gone for Sensationalism in a front page headline.
It reads “The End of Sharemilking”?What a bloody stupid panic type of fake news,with the wrong type of message and attention to the other world wide fake news outlets.
Vance was useless in TVNZ and is it even possible she will be an even bigger disaster fake news reporter in Dominion Post.

Police carried out a sting on Turret Rd yesterday targeting drivers using their mobile phones. During the 7.45am to 9.30am operation officers caught 27 offenders. Of those, 25 were women.

“It’s just very surprising. I would never have imagined we would have got 27,” Western Bay of Plenty acting head of road policing Sergeant Wayne Hunter said.

Hunter said most of the people caught were so absorbed by their phones, they did not notice the police cars or officers watching them from the side of the road.

“That’s the thing. Police weren’t even hiding. Police were standing on the side of the road. They were obviously so distracted they didn’t even see them there. To me it’s concerning.”

    Introduce cheaply trained and salaried ‘wardens’ to enforce simple road law breaches like failing to signal, running lights, mobile phone usage etc.
    
    Revenue is plowed back into financing the operating cost of the wardens.
    
    Wardens register the plates of fleeing drivers and the registered owner of that vehicle can be fined for failing to stop.
    
    This frees up cops from mundane enforcement and should improve overall policing! I get that this is a bit like the old days of traffic police but wardens scope would be far more limited than the olden day traffic cops.

    Agree, there’s some support from studies that show that phones are not in fact the largest cause of distraction accidents though that may be changing. Attending to the music being played was always a factor, might be less so now if the phone is used as an MP3 source.
    
    And I think it is generally agreed that texting is worse than talking on the phone. After all a proper “hands free” kit makes it legal to make and receive calls in a car as the driver. Texting takes one’s eyes off the road unless you are one of those rare “touch-texters”.

      When you’re at the lights you are supposed to be observing what is going on around you. It is called “situational awareness”.
      
      I once tooted at a woman doing this. She must have thought I was tooting because the lights had changed. She immediately put the phone down and started driving forwards even though the lights were still red.

It’s an interesting issue as there are quite a number of people who won’t heat their houses as (rightly or wrongly) they are afraid of the power bills.
Problem is it leads to mold and health problems.
I know of one property management company that are tearing their hair out with mold damage expenses. They install heat pumps etc but the tenants won’t use them.

  Problem is most times the landlords go with the cheapest heat pump option.
  
  Under size a heat pump and you’re looking at a huge power bill for very little heating.
  
  Also education would help a lot, people don’t realize that the heat pump in the lounge is just for heating the lounge not the whole house.
  
  A house properly set out with heat pumps will have a heat pump in every bedroom plus a big heat pump in the lounge/ktichen area.
  
  3 bedroom house will set you back around 10k if you want to heat it effectively with heat pumps, house has to be insulated as well.

    Yep, and that’s what we’ve done. Pretty good cost estimate.
    
    Cheaper and more controllable than putting in a bigger central unit as unless you spent quite a bit more individual rooms cannot easily be controlled from a central unit. There are units to do that, at a price.
    
    And the heat pumps work very well – we use them in winter to heat and in summer to cool when it’s too hot at night. Only complaint if you call it that is the limited cooling – only goes down to around 18 degrees, which is usually enough but sometimes a bit more would be nice.

  She told me it wasn’t her fault the property was damp and asked for help to clean the walls/ceiling or she’d lose her bond.
  Silly me agreed. Arrived at the property, pulled the plug out of the bath and told her she made the problem, either clean it up or pay up.
  Don’t know how it ended.

  Mallard lacks the personal charm, equilibrium and dignity to be able to conduct a fair Question Time that will facilitate the Opposition’s fundamental constitutional duty, namely, holding the Government to account.
  
  How can Mallard, in all logic, chastise or even dismiss (i.e. ‘name’) an MP for something said in the House that he as Speaker declines to define or to put on the Parliamentary record?         Mallard single-handedly linked Jacinda Ardern’s name with the “stupid little girl” insult that he, and only he, claims to have heard. His claim has not been verified by Hansard, or through Parliament’s sophisticated recording equipment. It will take a long time for the incident itself and for Mallard’s colourful phrase to disappear from what is remembered ultimately of PM Ardern; for that Mallard must assume total responsibility.
        
        Will Mallard now act like a true man, stand in Parliament at the commencement of its next sitting day, apologise publicly to the PM, and withdraw all comments that he has made in the House on that subject?

    The forecast today is for snow to 1300m, lowering to 1200m tomorrow, and a freezing level of 900m by Sunday night. The altitude for the skifield’s base is 1623m, and they’re forecast to receive around 75cm of snow between now and Sunday. Given that Ruapehu traditionally gets its biggest dumps of snow in August and September, I’d say the folks from Ruapehu Alpine Lifts are rubbing their hands in anticipation of a bumper ski season.

      A big snow dump in May is a fairly regular event. And then come the warm Norwesters and rain that washes the snow away. The ski season used to start around Queen’s Birthday weekend but for the last 30 years snow conditions comes good around 12 July. If temperatures go low the new snow making machines can make a difference.

        Actually as I recall the ski season starts at different times and always has. Back in 1973 there wasn’t a season at all at Ruapehu and only Coronet I think had enough snow to ski on. No snowmaking back then.
        
        But 4 years later 1977 was the big one, so much snow you could ski some lifts because they were buried. RAL hired a chopper to lift in their people to start digging out and we managed to persuade the pilot to take a couple of loads of people to the Dome (for a fee of course) to ski down (it was still legal then). Skied back via the Downhill and the then Downhill T has buried up to the top of the lift towers at some points, that’s something like 10 metres of snow !
        
        It’s always good to get a fairly early dump like this. yes the weather can and probably will turn, but this cools the mountain down and provides a base to build on. With luck it will be a good season. Whakapapa in particular needs quite a lot of snow in some areas to make it skiable.

      I’m not a skier, but was a regular up to the Turoa side of Mt Ruapehu during the late 1960s-1970s when a student at Wanganui High and Massey Uni.
      Both Educational Institutes had their tramping/Alpine huts on that side of the mountain.

    KevOB, I think it is pretty well established that a missile took out the flight not cannon or weapons from a fighter/interceptor. The argument has been over who was responsible, Ukrainians or Russian back separatists (or the Russians themselves at the separatists were typically not allowed to control the heavier weapons).
    
    This report purports to identify the source as a Russian controlled unit.
    
    The holes “peppering” the cockpit are most likely shrapnel, the missile has a proximity fused warhead designed to “kill” by fragmentation damage.

      Within days there was photo evidence of the cockpit of MH17 showing the shell holes. There was an intense concentration on the base of one side of the cockpit. Delivery had to be targeted not explosive.
      
      Missiles have either complete demolition or random shrapnel punctures not nice round 30mm canon holes in one place showing their appropriate exit deformation. Punch a nail through a tin lid and see that affect. That was what the cockpit holes were like.

  I disagree Poppa. There’s no way Collins, as effective as she is in Opposition, could unite the National Party enough to win an election. She is simply too polarising.
  
  Bridges is doing well enough, given he’s only been in the job for a couple of months. His best move so far was to give Collins a high profile front-bench placing, and match her up against the ineffective Twyford. He’s obviously happy to utilise her attack-dog skills, but he can remain at arm’s length.
  
  Bridges has been getting out and about in provincial New Zealand, and pulling good crowds. The key in that is winning back some of those who voted for Peters last year to “keep National honest”.

Muldoon had a huge following in the 1970s with his bulldog attitude, but then his socialist side came to the fore when he started putting price freezes on all and sundry.     The pathogen has lived because of low immunity caused by a lack of something in the diet.
    Most likely because of Palm Kernel feed and insufficient minerals in the diet.

When I popped into Kiwiblog the other day to defend Ghost South Road I noticed that a few people, including my mate Jack5, were pretty critical of the study of indigenous oral history.

I’m not so critical, because I owe my life partly to indigenous oral tradition.

Back in 1999 I was involved in a very serious car crash on the harbour bridge, and wound up in hospital getting emergency surgery. The doctors could only operate after they relaxed my broken body with generous doses of neuromuscular blockers. These blockers, which are used on a daily basis at all our major hospitals, were developed from curare, a potent poison that Amazonian Indians took from frogs and put on the tips of their arrows.

I’ve been reading the great ethnobotanist Wade Davis’ book One River, which describes how generations of Western scholars have taken to the forests and mountains of the Americas, and learned from the peoples living there about useful substances like curare. Very often these Westerners became students of local shamans, who shared with them oral traditions about plants. A huge number of the drugs we use to save lives in the West come from indigenous peoples.

When a group of people live for thousands of years in an environment, they naturally come to know a lot about it. Through trial and error, they learn which plants cure and which kill. By surviving they accumulate knowledge, which is based down verbally where no written language exists.

I mention all this because a young and brilliant Tongan scholar, Taitusi Taufa, has just won an award for a Vic University for a PhD that reveals the medicinal properties of the kingdom’s sea cucumbers. After diving in the sea around various islands and resting the marine sponges he found, Taufa was able to isolate a number of sub-species that may be able to treat various illnesses, including cancer. https://www.victoria.ac.nz/news/2018/05/research-uncovers-unique-anti-cancer-properties-in-tongan-marine-sponges

Like the ethnobotanists that Wade Davis’ book celebrates, Taufa was guided by local oral tradition. As he said:

“As a child, my grandparents and mother often used plants and herbal remedies to treat us when we were sick. At that time, Western medicine was unpopular and many people did not trust it, so we relied heavily on their traditional knowledge and medicine made from the leaves and bark of plants.

“These traditional medicines always seemed to work, which prompted my curiosity about the chemical contents responsible for the healing process.

“When I did my undergraduate studies in Chemistry, I realised that many drugs used nowadays, such as aspirin and morphine, were either based on, or inspired by, traditional medicine.”

I think what Taufa has done is marvellous, and I look forward to more medical benefits from the study of indigenous oral history.

  Sure, we should look for cures wherever we find them.
  
  Remember too that Western (European) medicine also had its herbal/traditional medicines. That’s all there was until 200-odd years ago.
  
  However in the Western case we also applied a more scientific approach that:
  1) identified compounds in natural medicines and figured out ways to synthesise them and industrialise them
  2) develop out understanding so that new meds could be invented.
  
  As for the “might cure cancer” claim. The researchers always throw that in there as a way to get funding. Pah!

I do not mean it is inaccurate, it is true, but I think some people are beginning to realise there is not just one compound in these traditional remedies. Often it is how some of the minor compounds interact with the apparent “silver bullet” compound that gives best response.

      Collins received the information from a passenger on the flight, and did the responsible thing; she asked Twyford, via written questions, if what was alleged had happened. She could have gone to the media first, or asked an Oral Question in the House, but chose not to.

I was disgusted with the story on One News last night about the culling of M-Bovis cattle on a Canterbury property.

MPI want to go on to the farm today and cull hundreds of cows which are in calf. That is despite Cabinet being scheduled to make a decision on Monday as to whether to continue culling, or try to manage the disease.

MPI’s attitude towards these farmers is callous and cruel. Surely, showing some humanity and waiting until after Cabinet on Monday is not going to make a difference to their efforts to contain M-Bovis.

Guess which one the progressives are upset the most by? Yep, the cattle. As far as aborting baby humans, it doesn’t bother them in the least – they are all in favour of it and think laws should be passed to legalize it yet again.

Makes you weep for humanity.

The baby calves are almost full-term and will be cut out of their mothers’ wombs conscious and probably struggling to breathe.
The human embryos/fetuses will be anaesthetized and feel nothing.
They are at a much earlier state of development.
The humans have a choice.
The cows don’t.

        Not many people deliberately kill others.
        But people with a propensity for violence need to be kept in custody until they learn not to endanger others.
        I’m not “pro” abortion.
        The pregnant woman/girl is the only one who can make a decision like that.
        It’s in human nature that unwanted pregnancies are going to occur.
        Hopefully with enough support, couples will work together to support each other and their child.
        Often this is not possible and abortion is a more humane option.

        GV, I have to say, we all know where babies come from, so a woman having sex – performing the action that creates a baby – and then complaining because she has lost her autonomy seems a specious argument, like jumping in the water and complaining about getting wet.
        
        Getting pregnant is what a woman’s body is supposed to do as a result of having sex (of course, not all of the time). It is not something that is involuntarily forced on a woman (discounting rape) but something she chooses to do. This is where the woman makes her choice. It is entirely her decision: she has the choice to say yes or no to having sex. Ultimately the baby is a direct result of that choice, even though she may not want a baby. She can refrain from the actions that naturally lead to it. After that, it is too late. People make it sound like it isn’t fair to her that she got pregnant, and is something other than the direct result of her actions.
        
        I have the choice to drive very fast in my car or not. I may find the speed pleasurable, and getting a ticket is obviously not the outcome I want. If I speed (my own choice) and then get a speeding ticket (something that may not happen every time I speed, but depends on the chance of a police officer spotting me) do I then have a right to complain and to ask the officer to tear up the ticket because it isn’t the outcome I wanted? I exercised my choice, took all the precautions I could in order not to get caught, decided to drive at the speed I wanted, and must live with the consequences of the result that naturally flowed from that.

        GV, of course I was just using speeding as an analogy. In real life I do not speed because I know the consequences and danger. I know that if I wanted to take pleasure in speeding that there is a time and place for doing that (on a racetrack, legally, etc). It used to also be considered that the place for taking the pleasure of sex safely was in marriage. It was safe because the woman knew that any offspring would be both wanted and cared for and also that becoming pregnant was seen as a blessing and not a curse.
        
        It is the taking the sex out of marriage these days that is one of the problems. It may not be breaking the laws in most societies, but it used to be called fornication and is against the moral law.

        As C.S Lewis points out in Mere Christianity, there is only one moral law. Otherwise each person could have their own moral law – Hitler’s moral law and Mother Teresa’s moral law and why is it fair to say that one person’s subjective view is better than anothers? Only one can actually be moral. As Lewis explained –
        
        “Isn’t what you call the Moral Law just a social convention, something that is put into us by education?” I think there is a misunderstanding here. The people who ask that question are usually taking it for granted that if we have learned a thing from parents and teachers, then that thing must be merely a human invention. But, of course, that is not so. We all learned the multiplication table at school. A child who grew up alone on a desert island would not know it. But surely it does not follow that the multiplication table is simply a human convention, something human beings have made up for themselves and might have made different if they had liked?
        
        I fully agree that we learn the Rule of Decent Behaviour from parents and teachers, and friends and books, as we learn everything else. But some of the things we learn are mere conventions which might have been different—we learn to keep to the left of the road, but it might just as well have been the rule to keep to the right—and others of them, like mathematics, are real truths. The question is to which class the Law of Human Nature belongs.
        
        There are two reasons for saying it belongs to the same class as mathematics. The first is, as I said in the first chapter, that though there are differences between the moral ideas of one time or country and those of another, the differences are not really very great—not nearly so great as most people imagine—and you can recognise the same law running through them all: whereas mere conventions, like the rule of the road or the kind of clothes people wear, may differ to any extent. The other reason is this.
        
        When you think about these differences between the morality of one people and another, do you think that the morality of one people is ever better or worse than that of another? Have any of the changes been improvements? If not, then of course there could never be any moral progress. Progress means not just changing, but changing for the better. If no set of moral ideas were truer or better than any other, there would be no sense in preferring civilised morality to savage morality, or Christian morality to Nazi morality. In fact, of course, we all do believe that some moralities are better than others. We do believe that some of the people who tried to change the moral ideas of their own age were what we would call Reformers or Pioneers—people who understood morality better than their neighbours did. Very well then.
        
        The moment you say that one set of moral ideas can be better than another, you are, in fact, measuring them both by a standard, saying that one of them conforms to that standard more nearly than the other. But the standard that measures two things is something different from either. You are, in fact, comparing them both with some Real Morality, admitting that there is such a thing as a real Right, independent of what people think, and that some people’s ideas get nearer to that real Right than others. Or put it this way. If your moral ideas can be truer, and those of the Nazis less true, there must be something—some Real Morality—for them to be true about.
        
        The reason why your idea of New York can be truer or less true than mine is that New York is a real place, existing quite apart from what either of us thinks. If when each of us said “New York” each meant merely “The town I am imagining in my own head,” how could one of us have truer ideas than the other? There would be no question of truth or falsehood at all. In the same way, if the Rule of Decent Behaviour meant simply “whatever each nation happens to approve,” there would be no sense in saying that any one nation had ever been more correct in its approval than any other; no sense in saying that the world could ever grow morally better or morally worse.
        
        I conclude then, that though the differences between people’s ideas of Decent Behaviour often make you suspect that there is no real natural Law of Behaviour at all, yet the things we are bound to think about these differences really prove just the opposite.

Brimbank Council in Melbourne’s west has asked for female ‘walk’ and ‘don’t walk’ figures to replace the male crossing silhouettes, the Herald Sun reported.

    I stood for a 6-7mo pregnant Wellie High School girl.
    
    Poor girl walked most of the way down the bus past loads of old farts before she got near me.
    I offered her my seat.
    She said she didn’t need it and I told her I sure did when I was pregnant.

      Any parent of a thirteen year old kid with two offspring should be taken out & shot with a pellet of their own shit. Nature may allow children to have children but it takes a terrible toll on their bodies while at that age they are immature & totally mentally unequipped to raise the unfortunate kids.
      
      For all the crap you throw at cockys at least we have enough sense not to get our lambs in lamb.

      Taught a yr 13 (7th form) guy whose current girlfriend was expecting his baby.
      He wandered into one of my junior classes one afternoon to tell me that she had just given birth.
      One of my stunned juniors asked when he left the room whether the guy had a kid.
      No, I replied… he had 2 kids now.

        And both kids odds on to receive the type of upbringing that would guarantee that the cycle would be repeated within a few short years.
        
        Mind you, very occasionally there are kids who get pregnant & through sheer determination succeed.
        
        There was an article in the Wairarapa Times Age a few years ago focussed on the teenage pregnancy unit of Makora College. (I can’t source a link).
        
        Anyway the article was about a teenage mother who became pregnant in her fifth form year. To complete her list of woe her father was estranged from the family & her mother died of cancer about the same time. Mum to be got a flat, stayed at college, completed her 6th form year & went on to varsity to complete a science based degree. In her spare time she took in her younger brother who went off the rails & straightened him out.
        
        I’ve often wondered if anything or anyone could ever stand between that kid & success.
