It couldn’t possibly be that she claims feminist status after a lifetime of enabling her sexual abuser husband and victim-blaming all the poor women who tried to be listened to about his abuses. It couldn’t possibly be that she allowed an ambassador to die a terrible death in Benghazi and then lied like a lying liar about it. It couldn’t possibly be that she condemns anyone who doesn’t support her. It couldn’t be that she cheated a better candidate out of the nomination because the DNC sisterhood decided it was “Her Turn”. It couldn’t be that she is a beneficiary of the Clinton Foundation’s dishonest money laundering schemes. It couldn’t be that she sold out to foreign powers by ‘pay for play’. It couldn’t be that she is contemptibly incompetent. It couldn’t be that she is complicit in what is increasingly looking like an attempted coup by the DNC to oust a legally elected President.

  And apparently Taxinda, our PM, one of several NZ female PMs, one of many NZ female MPs actually agreed with her.
  
  Maybe people just don’t want to hear that crap anymore. I know many women who are highly successful, through hard work and long hours.
  
  A pity that our PM got to her place through bribing students and nice photo shoots. It actually harms women overall when one ‘succeeds’ in such a way without the years of hard work and experience.

Why all the hype and interviews etc about what Cindy and Clinton talked about?

Clinton no longer has any official position and is here purely on a commercial moneymaking venture. Her meeting up with Clinton has no more official significance than having Ed Sherran around for tea and scones.

I guess there is one issue though (though I doubt it was addressed). The Clinton Foundation (aka the Chelsea Clinton Dress Fund) has its claws into the taxpayer for $5.5 million. NZ should not be using the Clinton Foundation as a vehicle for giving away money.

I suppose it makes a nice smokescreen to talk about Clinton rather than Curren, Fingergate, out of control NZF ministers and the looming budget.

A year on and Kahui version 2 (or maybe version 23 by now) are having their case thrown out due to lack of evidence.

Apparently: “The police Child Protection team endeavour to keep children safe, and consider success in a connected prosecution as an important, but secondary objective.”

And: “Police strive to get the best outcome for all parties, and this was aided by appropriate adult behaviour and “brave ownerships of issues by adults” ”

It really sounds like bending over backwards so that the numbers don’t look bad.

Why do we even bother with a Child Protection team if they are not aggressively pursuing cases like these? Shit parents on drugs need very clear messages that their actions have consequences and are not tolerated. We can’t just be giving them cuddles and a free pass all the time.

  I am coming to the conclusion that I would rather see my raxpayer contributions go towards paying these drug addicted, violent women with no ethics NOT to have babies.
  Won’t happen, I know, but how much longer can we as a society sit back and see babies and children treated worse than the dog – and then make excuses for that? These people should not be having children. The only way to stop them having unwanted children is to pay them.

    Our own David Garrett suggested this very sensible solution many years ago.
    Don’t let’s assume however that these parents are all “violent “.
    Raising young children is extremely draining work, especially when the mum/dad is a troubled young person on drugs.
    Which is why paying young people NOT to have kids, or at least delay having them, with incentives to do so, is so much better an idea than paying them to have them.

      You can’t tell young people they should never have kids, holy.
      They’ve had enough put-downs in their lives or they probably wouldn’t need drugs.
      Better to delay it for as long as possible with payments for keeping up with long-term contraceptives.
      If by some miracle they manage to turn their lives around by 30, they just might be able to do a good job of parenting.

  So I had my brothers two boys for the night (ages 9 & 7) and I had Fox on, as Trump was speaking. Suddenly they started telling me that Donald Trump is bad and Hillary Clinton is good. I argued with them for a bit, then changed the subject. The next day, worried that my brother who is the stereotypical yuppie had suddenly become a communist, I asked him about it. He was adamant he hadn’t even talked to them about politics. The conclusion we came to was that they were being brainwashed at a decile 10+ school (they are literally there from 8 AM til 6PM).       I don’t know the answer, but even decent people would baulk at this:
      Imagine if you only have a few weeks of work, were still paying your Rotorua room in a flat (because you need somewhere to go back to soon), plus the $120 APATA flat.
      
      Maybe for seasonal work WINZ needs to find a way (or non govt. agency) to organise young people going from one to another seasonal job, building skills and without the problem of ‘what now’ after each seasonal job.

    @Paulus remember the daily Ag reports on the radio about the harvest in regions where pip fruit/kiwifruit are grown. They highlighted which variety was being harvested and when the next variety would start. Also any variations of the condition of fruit arriving at the pack houses with early bruising or damage. Suspect you also know what fantastic money a good contract picker can make in a season. Sorry to see those beautiful Jonathan apples have gone though.

In recent days I have driven around the South Island. I routinely heard radio adverts for Community Colleges etc where they were encouraging students to sign on for various qualifications. The alarming aspect of the adverts was that they didn’t refer to the merits of the qualifications or the enhanced employment chances but rather to the fact that the course costs are FREE! There was reference to how the government policy was making education more accessible as opposed to any evaluation of the merit of that education. The absurd free tuition idea is nothing but a rort for the “education providers.” This policy is dragooning young people into socialist clap-trap and defeat.

Because I didn’t see yesterday’s Soper/Maori seats post until quite late, I’m putting my comment in GD.

One can partly defend Maori-only electorates, however ineffective and divisive they are, because they are constructed on approximately the same numerical voters-to-MP ratio as general seats.

Far less defensible, but coming to a local governments, are the thoroughly undemocratic co-governance arrangements justified on spurious ToW partnership grounds. Committees with 50% membership by iwi representatives, regardless of the actual demographics of the local body region, will have extensive decision making powers, and will all want funding.

Auckland has, I think, 16 of these planned or underway. If the performance of the authority on volcanic cones is anything to go by so far, we will soon be wistfully looking back on the good old days when the ACC was efficiently staffed by people quickly responsive and sensitive to the concerns of local people. (/sarc)

Undemocratic, racially unrepresentative, unaccountable government is a recipe for race relations friction and lousy decision making.

  They have the best of intentions of both sides – paving the ‘road to hell’. Maori believe they are finally achieving ‘equality’ – not that they believe it is ‘enough’. Others, especially Europeans, believe they are expiating their ‘sins’ and also achieving ‘equality’ – perhaps staving off dissension. Some, of course, are just in it for personal gain and a majority are ‘going along for the ride’ because they have no other choice – it’s where their self-interest lies.
  
  But institutionalised inequality has never worked. It didn’t work for the colonists anywhere – and that wasn’t because they were ‘white’ or ‘not indigenous’. It’s because it was unequal and society was completely fragmented. It won’t work here, either.
  
  But these things take time to come to fruition, just as it has taken time to get from the colonists to here – and during that time all manner of illusion will prevail.
  
  I could say it will end the same way – but it’s almost guaranteed to end much more violently, as it is everywhere else. It’s either ‘us’ or it’s ‘them and us’. You can lead the horse to water – force it’s head into the water or waterboard it – …. and all will eventually say, “We never meant that to happen. We had a dream”.

If you ever needed an example of how sometimes gender bias works in both directions, you need look no further than the shameful case of a new father in Christchurch who has cruelly been denied Paid Parental Leave in the most heartbreaking circumstances.

This father, who wishes to be known only as Keith, has fallen through a huge hole in the parental leave legislation, and the bureaucratic interpretation of the law in this case is something to behold. and it all goes to the definition of who is the child’s primary caregiver.

Keith’s wife, the mother of the child, sadly passed away; her heart stopped as she arrived at hospital, the child was born by c section. Keith was left to raise his son alone.

His wife was the primary caregiver, but as she had not worked in the 12 months leading up to the birth, she was ineligible to apply for PPL. Apparently this situation continues, even though the defined primary caregiver has now passed on. You would think in a situation like this the application process must be void, and the entire application treated as a new one, but this is not the case. Keith’s wife had no entitlement to transfer, therefore nothing is due to Keith, despite the fact that the initial primary caregiver is now dead. MBIE has suggested the father contact Work and Income! There is a gap in the legislation, and no possibility of ministerial discretion can be applied for under the legislation.

How could this legislation have been drawn up in such a way so that this poor man, at the worst possible time in his life, has now been kicked while he is down!!

We know Jacinda and her motley crew need someone to run protection for them but the stifling of Question Time is an affront to democracy.
It may even need a full boycott – or the Opposition refusing to ask any questions at all until things change.
At the moment they aren’t getting any answers so it wouldn’t make much difference.
Mallard is a disgrace but perhaps is doing his leader’s work in undermining key pillars of our democracy.

  All she really did at the time was say there was going to be no off shore block offering this year. They framed it in a way to make a big splash in the headlines. So it was not really a “captains call” in the sense you are alluding to.
  Apparently they are amending the Crown Minerals Act at the moment, which is going through Parliament.
  NB. I heard yesterday the OMV ( the huge Austrian company that has big investments in the NZ O&G industry has been trying to get a meeting with Minister Megan Woods –can not get anywhere. Maybe a big boy from Vienna will come down soon to have a “chat” with the PM.

If I look to the gains that have been had, so for example, in the Waikato as a result of a Treaty settlement, where the emphasis was on water quality, it led to a planned change because there was intensification in the upper catchment. It took 2 years for all the stakeholders – farmers, iwi, regional councils and the like – to get around the table and say what can we do to transition to a different space, so that water quality is improved, so that we’re giving farmers time to transition to the way in which land is used, so that everybody is a part of the solution, so there are examples out there… [Guyon cut her off]

Interesting work which needs to be revisited.

“In a 1962 edition of Scientific American, the ecologist John B Calhoun presented the results of a macabre series of experiments conducted at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).1 He had placed several rats in a laboratory in a converted barn where – protected from disease and predation and supplied with food, water and bedding – they bred rapidly. The one thing they were lacking was space, a fact that became increasingly problematic as what he liked to describe as his “rat city” and “rodent utopia” teemed with animals. Unwanted social contact occurred with increasing frequency, leading to increased stress and aggression. Following the work of the physiologist, Hans Selye, it seemed that the adrenal system offered the standard binary solution: fight or flight. But in the sealed enclosure, flight was impossible. Violence quickly spiralled out of control. Cannibalism and infanticide followed. Males became hypersexual, pansexual and, an increasing proportion, homosexual. Calhoun called this vortex “a behavioural sink”.

Their numbers fell into terminal decline and the population tailed off to extinction. At the experiments’ end, the only animals still alive had survived at an immense psychological cost: asexual and utterly withdrawn, they clustered in a vacant huddled mass. Even when reintroduced to normal rodent communities, these “socially autistic” animals remained isolated until death. In the words of one of Calhoun’s collaborators, rodent “utopia” had descended into “hell”.

Focus now shifted away from simply identifying the pathological consequences of density and towards factors that mediated its effects. This was aided by a distinction between “density” as a physical measure and “crowding” as a subjective response. Feeling crowded was determined by a range of social and psychological factors: AN INDIVIDUAL’S DESIRED LEVEL OF PRIVACY, THEIR ABILITY TO CONTROL A SITUATION OR THEIR SOCIAL ROLE. ….By reducing unwanted interaction through improved design of space … crowding stress could be avoided… Through improved design and increased control, Calhoun attempted to develop more collaborative and adaptable rodent communities capable of withstanding greater degrees of density.

In focusing upon crowding, not only were the benefits of dense city-living ignored, but other causes of urban pathology, such as poverty and inequality, were neglected. Yet Calhoun’s work considered many of these factors, suggested how they could be overcome, and as such, his role deserves reconsideration.

“…medical historian Edmund Ramsden about Calhoun’s work: Ultimately, “rats may suffer from crowding; human beings can cope,” … Another researcher, Jonathan Freedman, turned to studying actual people — they were just high school and university students, but definitely human. His work suggested a different interpretation. MORAL DECAY COULD ARISE “NOT FROM DENSITY, BUT FROM EXCESSIVE SOCIAL INTERACTION,” Ramsden says. “Not all of Calhoun’s rats had gone berserk. THOSE WHO MANAGED TO CONTROL SPACE LED RELATIVELY NORMAL LIVES.”

So – in our society, particularly in the age of social media:

* Just how many individuals do not suffer from ‘density’?

*Have “a desired level of privacy, ability to control their situation or their social role”?

*Have “control of their space”?

That’s the problem. Current society wants control of every individual’s mind, body, and soul – and society goes out of its way to drag them into unwanted contacts to “re-educate” them. Different people may know the theories, but ‘fiscal realities’ and lobby groups with agenda prevent the correct actions/designs being followed. The results are not going well and bear a marked similarity to:

I’ve had unconfirmed reports that the German Police, after an enormous man hunt, have captured 89 year grand mother Ursula Haverbeck after an American Jewish Shoah group launched a worldwide MSM “name and shame” on the German Police because Haverbeck was 2 days late in showing up to start her 2 year prison sentence for free speech.

    You’ve hit on two of the great truths of this life Tauhei. Men don’t listen & women nag yet there’s often plenty of humour to be had.
    
    Mrs Nasska is a sensible level headed woman not given to rash decisions but about five years ago she went along with our eldest daughter to a local kennel & came home with a bloody german shepherd puppy! We were farmers & shepherds are some of the worst wool classers bred but logic wasn’t going to win……I didn’t like cats & she’d decided to have a pet. Worse, as an ex stock truck driver & then cocky I’d always had dogs but they’d never been allowed in the house. That rule went west too!
    
    The inevitable happened. She had no idea about training dogs & things were coming unglued rapidly. In the end I stepped in & the dog responded as you would expect. It still loved the missus, still ignored everything she said yet sat at my feet & as expected with an intelligent breed will do anything I tell it to.
    
    The humour kicks in when I’m due for a telling off. Tara comes & sits beside me & looks sad! 🙂

      To be fair, dogs will always look to, and take cues from the alpha of the pack in any situation. It takes a lot of dedication and training from women for them to accept being 3rd in the relationship, even though they would defend your wife with their life, they would do it because in their eyes you own the wife as well.
      My rescued dog is exactly the same.

      I got called to school for a conference in 6th Grade after my oldest decked another student who took a swing at his mate. They both got suspended. At the conference, the principal asked who my son was most scared of. Mom or Dad. My son Ozy said Mom 🙂
      Similarly, the dog is more scared of me than any other member of the family. The Man of the House gets home and the dog will be beside himself and would piss himself as a pup but he knows who cleans the stone run and will only listen to me.
      Lest I withdraw my affection I assume. The dog is a nibbler not a biter and the most gawd awful scrounge but if he goes for my kids noses and I growl at him he makes like a cushion on the couch. All I can see is one eye looking at me while he considers if I’m still pissy.
      I crate trained him from 5 months after a stint in Kings County animal shelter and have been rewarded by more recognition and devotion than I ever expect to receive from the offspring. Or the husband.
      Doggo understands fourteen words and directions including “hide his boxers ”
      
      I’ve trained him to be a weapon in the battle of the sexes.
      The males in the house only listen when they are dependent on me for clean underpants and I’m not above recruiting my mutt to make a point.

I have just had had a great feed of steak and kidney stew with dumplings and can’t believe all these family’s that are in poverty would rather go down the Street and buy McDonald’s or Kentucky Chicken that more than five times the cost of a good old stew. The more money this bunch of clowns from the Coalition from hell throw at poverty the richer the takeaway business becomes. Our tea tonight cost about $12.00 and their is still enough to have on toast tomorrow.

Its time someone had the balls to tell Mahuta and Willie Jackson that their maori language is really just a small pigeon langue with hardly any words and any 12 years old Eurpoean could learn it in a year.
It belongs on the Marae for ceremonial purposes only.
No many maoris want to speak it anyway.
