Captain Mainwaring

That has to be one of the greatest one-day cricket comebacks in the history of the game.
England were cruising to 380+ with 12 overs to go then the dominoes started falling, but they still got to 334.
Then NZ were 2 for 2 with both openers out for ducks. After a cameo from Wilkinson, Taylor got going and despite being a cripple at the end he hit a massive 181 not out and carried the team to a fantastic victory.
Never write the game off until it’s over.

      In my ever-humble opinion, Taylor’s knock was the best ODI innings ever played by a Kiwi. I rate it ahead of Fleming’s hundred against the Proteas at the Wanderers in CWC2003, and better than Guptill’s double century against the Windies in the 2015 CWC quarter final.
      
      Although Williamson will ultimately break every New Zealand batting record, I rate Ross Taylor as right up there amongst our best-ever batsmen, and arguably at the very top of the tree.

        Concur KS. That knock of Guppies against the Windies was glorious, took my middle son to that match and what a blinder of a game it was, particularity with Gayle coming out and smashing it all over the shop.
        
        Taylor showed amazing class, touch and incredible sticking power yesterday. A knock for the ages indeed.

        Taylor is an all time NZ great, there is no doubt.
        But people are so quick to label everything the ‘Greatest Ever’ these days.
        Last season the NZ Media were screaming Guptill was our ‘Greatest Ever Batsman’ after a few big slogging knocks, then before that Kane Williamson was the ‘Best since Bradman’ for a while, and let’s not forget the absolute hysteria whenever McCullum got a big knock.
        
        Still Martin Crowe for my mind (Though Kimbo makes a great case for Glenn Turner.)

  I watched it happen and was of the opinion at the time that Ross should have retired with about 8 overs to go, let someone come in who could actually run.
  At a run a ball it should never have been so tight.

  I disagree completely Happychappy. Sure, Hesson dropped Taylor as captain, not because of his individual performance, but because his leadership of the team was too low-key. But Taylor has blossomed since then, both as a player and as an on-field leader, without the burden of captaincy.
  
  I would argue that Hesson was actually astute enough to understand that Taylor wasn’t a natural captain, but could make his greatest contribution to the team with the bat.

Heard NZs ex PM the funny peculiar Helen Clark ranting on about International Womens day. No problem with that. Especially when we know that men will get the same coverage on November 19 .That is the date for international mens day.
Couldn’t help but think when her Reign of terror for nine years in charge NZ covered a law to make prostitution legal.
There she was Clark virtually bribing her MPs to vote for it.
She got her way. The result a can of worms was opened ,maybe unintended consequences.
It enabled very young women to frequent street corners selling their bodies. In fact many say completely out of control.
Wonder does Clark have that on her CV . dont think so .A bloody disgrace to think that a Labour PM would be the main catalyst for young women to sell their bodies ,is not a good look . Not in the spirit for the International day for Women 8th March each year.

  Prostitution as such was never illegal. The three illegal things were soliciting (drumming up custom), running a brothel and living off immoral earnings (those who received money from prostitutes for protection, management and other services).
  There was the ridiculous situation where the police found it expedient to let things be as long as it was done discreetly.
  However the police did not always use their brains. When they decided to ‘pot’ a brothel they often relied on the existence of condoms to help secure a prosecution. Hence some brothels tried to operate without condoms which was potentially asking for trouble. This actually gave some impetus for appeal.
  Repeal of prostitution and homosexuality laws were in my opinion needed and this is illustrated here, in UK and other countries that such laws have not been reinstated despite fringe parties and politicians campaigning on this from time to time.
  Also, UK homosexuality laws handed things on a plate to the KGB. If KGB got wind that a someone in the public or military service and had access to state secrets, KGB would blackmail the person often with success.
  If it had not happened on Helen Clark’s watch, it would have happened another time.

  In the past feminism was useful to change ridiculous rules such as women not being allowed to have a personal bank account. Women had to have daddy or hubby’s name on the account as presumably women were deemed too stupid.

    WG – I was mortified to watch the TV1 IYotW article tonight that had 3 high school girls worrying that gender inequality might stop them from achieving their potential.
    Whoever has filled their heads with this bullshit has a lot to answer for. It does nothing at all to empower women to undermine the confidence of girls before they even start out.
    These so-called feminists are in it for the attention, not the cause.

    Maybe not RP as we see the drop in the percentage of woman employed in senior position has now settled around 19% because their failure rates are higher. This was the logical result from a gender preferential selection process being used for so long instead of ability, experience and qualifications. It might also equal the percentage of females who make so much of an issue out of equality. While many are females from birth they do not become women.
    The remaining 81% are about where we might expect it to be for the majority who enjoy being women while more of the things that come natural to women.

But most articles are about National who aren’t in power and use agreesively negative language, and not a single negative on Ardern or any analysis of her performance or policy. International Sexual Discrimination Against Men Day today

HDPA is about to launch into an orgy of dishonesty on ZB about how women are on the wrong side of the gender equity stats.

Conveniently ignoring the big, meaningful stats which show beyond any reasonable doubt that men are the ones doing it hard:
– men on average dying younger than women (the biggest fucking issue for us all)
– men massively over-represented in work place injury and mortality rates
– males far over represented in suicide rates
– men bear a higher proportion of the total tax burden

All the life and death issues hit men far easier than women.

And on top of that men are now subjected to “guilty until proven innocent and even then all men are bastards anyway” thinking in all societal contexts where a woman can dream up a way to play the victim.

No one does hypocrisy like feminists.

  If women were paid less than man for the same work, surely companies would hire females over males? No? It would be the economically rational thing to do.
  
  I personally think that the decision to go from single-earner families to both-parents-working was a grave error in the 1970s. Sure, it greatly increased household income, but the market being the market simply raised the price of housing and lowered the hourly labor rate, and so people by and large ended back where they started.
  I won’t even touch on the depressing effects of working families on the choices to raise their 2.0 children (who could afford 3 or more?)

      I would say the phenomenon is far less advanced in Japan than it is in NZ. In Japan, it is still socially acceptable (and indeed a symbol of status) to be a stay-at-home housewife.
      
      Just between you and me (one man to another (assuming that you are of the XY persuasion) ), I would far rather be a middle-class Japanese housewife than a middle-class Japanese “salaryman” facing a daily 90-minute commute to work and being a small cog in a large corporation.
      
      Japanese apartments may be small, but they are easy to clean, and so after you (the wife) get your 1.3 children off to school, you can get together with your girlfriends over coffee. Your husband, in the meantime, will be under relentless pressure to meet his manager’s targets and to conform with the dictates of his workplace and his never-satisfied customers.

    It was less of a decision than a snowballing movement that had its genesis in post WW2 NZ. During the war women were “manpowered” into non traditional roles & were loathe to go back to the kitchen when hostilities ended.
    
    Another cause was the proliferation of new home appliances & add ons that people wanted. Many a woman went to work so that the family could buy a TV like the neighbours had.
    
    It was the start of the situation we now have where for the vast majority of couples two incomes are vital just to own a home in which to nest.
    
    Yet I still feel that it was a price paid for ‘progress’ rather than political incompetence.

      Not sure of the exact year (1980-1985?) but at some point, the combination of rising house prices and interest rates, when combined with the removal of the 3%-interest-rate Housing Corp (old State Advnces Corp) loan and, indeed, Housing Corp’s sale to Stone key Investments Ltd. (which you might recall), left those who wanted to own their own homes with very, very little choice but to have ‘The wife’ go out to work. That, combined with such minor details as an increase in the prices of Doctors visits, Milk, Bread etc. etc. effectively created a ‘no-win’ situation for such couples. If there wasn’t two incomes, then there simply wasn’t going to be a house! What didn’t help as well was that by not ‘complying’ (and going out to work), the ‘stay at home parent’ was effectively isolated and, in some quarters even ridiculed for deciding to buck the trend and make that decision. Some got through it (we did-so; just), but unfortunately many did not, and I have often wondered if what was experienced, was some form of social engineering experiment in ‘manipulation’; the combination of ‘negative forces’ (Rent rises, interest and house price rises, Food and medical price rises etc. etc. etc. ) was just a little too coincidental.

        Interesting thoughts Komata. The abolition of State Advances & Maori Affairs loans IMO heralded the start of the housing shortages. This was mostly because they were targeted solely at new builds thus linking house construction to population growth rather than supply & demand.
        
        But whether there was an element of social engineering involved in women joining the workforce is harder to discern. 1960s & 70s NZ was beset with labour shortages & from a political pov the only answers were women working or more immigration. The latter was the more expensive option.
        
        Your points about price increases are well made but must be seen in the light of the rampant inflation of the time which makes comparisons very difficult.

      I agree with the motivations for having both parents work in the post-war period. Part of the reason that this process was retarded in Japan was the far lessor role of the welfare state.
      
      Let me explain. In NZ the robust welfare state acted to “liberate” dependent mothers. In Japan, the lessor welfare state meant greater dependence for senior citizens on their families.
      
      What do we know about senior citizens? For the most part, they favor the “old ways.” So in Japan, it was common throughout the post-war period of the 50s to 70s for the eldest son to live on in his father’s house, bringing in his new wife and raising a family, and eventually taking over the household. (The inevitable conflict between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law in Japan is LEGEND and is a staple of many Japanese soap operas, films and books.)
      
      So, in this multi-generational household, the parents are going to put pressure on the young wife to stay at home, do the housework, raise the children, tend to the vegetable garden, and all that good old stuff.
      
      Not so in NZ, where senior citizens have pensions and freehold houses, and are mostly financially independent of their children. Their absence from the NZ household has taken pressure off women to conform to traditional housewife roles.

  Perhaps nasska but it might have been postponed after it was reported that 1 in 4 children have been seen by social services. Most are as a result of domestic violence problems which continue to increase substantially.
  Creating a baby making industry with an attractive income stream is one area where women have the majority as only they can reproduce. It is now the default occupation in many families that have been in it for generations.
  The unintended consequences are again in play as these children are simply an income source added to the population for the wrong reason. Now the COL intend to give another boost by removing any obstacles in the path of this lucrative income.
  Perhaps we can take some comfort in the fact that 75% of children are where they are by intention while getting the attention the so justly deserve.

Instead we are served up a diet of “Jacind the saviour” on her tour of Pacific Island nations;
The Col saved TPPA by renaming it CPTPPA & locally saying no to foreigners & with it goodbye true foreign investment;
So far KiwiBuild has managed to build 6 apartments in…..Westport – I thought the housing crisis was everywhere nut the West Coast & Southland?;
Poverty was solved, but then it wasn’t because the numbers were wrong, but it cost significant sums of money;
Mental health has been solved by an endless enquiry that will tour the country looking for & then telling us mental is a major problem & more money must be spent on it;
Pike River, the Minister with the DOM have kicked it into the long grass – I.e. beyond the next election;
There is a tax working group, with the remit of how to extort mote money from our pockets, rather than look at the shape of government NZ needs (turkeys don’t vote for Chritmas);
The gifting of the $1 billion per annum bribe/slush fund to be spent on pork barrel politics;
Then there are the list of ministers who after 5 months are looking like significant failures – starting with the Acting PM, & the Minister for Communications & Open Govt; and
Finally, there is the hangers on (NZ Last & the Red Melons) who have distinguished themselves as being nothing more than parasites supporting a clueless Labour administration.

When are this sad bunch of losers going to start governing and stop squandering the open field from critical analysis they have been gifted by the media?

      Igm, if my hunch is right you may not be too far out about who ztev is. As I believe he is:
      A two time losing MP from Auckland (1990 & 1996) – couldn’t have been loved by Helen so wasn’t high enough up the list to get back in 1996 after losing his constituency seat;
      A losing Auckland city councillor (2013);
      Is now a local board councillor; and
      As he is over 65 is a superannuiant, so is on the benefit.
      From memory the person I’m thinking of was a builders labourer before he became an MP.

      As for Cohn leaving –it was always going happen from as far back as Trump pulling out of the Paris Agreement, a move that Cohn strongly opposed. I was watching the cricket yesterday and Williamson was given out caught when he clearly wasn’t. I was fuming. The Kiwi commentators were fuming. It was as if everyone whined enough the decision would be reversed and he would resume his innings.
Reminded me of the American election. All the Hillary supporters grizzled vociferously about the inequability of a voting system that allowed the loser of the popular vote to win as if that would change the result.
In NZ some National supporters still go on about the outcome of last year’s election as if by endlessly complaining the outcome will miraculously change.

    Winston has the option, or the Greens for that matter, of pulling out of the coalition on some matter of principle. Munro couldn’t do that, although I wouldn’t put it passed Steve Smith to try.

    “Help out” is such an emotive term.
    
    The term “help out” implies that there is one active “helper” and a passive “beneficiary.” NZ gives aid to Tonga and Tonga sits there and waits for more aid.
    
    True “help” is more long term in nature, and more like “training in better life skills.” For example, NZ could help Tonga through programs to reduce obesity and dependence on NZ-based kidney dialysis facilities.

      I remember a story told to me some 30 years ago by an ex member of the IJA who saw service in the Philippines.
      In the 1980s, he and his elderly comrades wanted to do something to help the local community where they had been stationed in the 1940s.
      They raised money and bought a fire-fighting truck for the village. Alas, the goodwill project did not go well. There was no provision for maintenance of the vehicle, and it soon fell into disuse.
      Next, someone suggested they buy brass band instruments for the local village school. Alas, squabbling within the school over which children would use the instruments erupted, and most of the trumpets were “misplaced”.
      Finally, by the late 1980s, the group of old soldiers simply had a large immovable boulder set up on the edge of the village with a memorial message of peace to the local community.

Perhaps the worst political appointee in NZ history, Dame Devoid, jumps into the Maorification of place names.

Here is the Devoid view in the Hooerald:

“Aotearoa New Zealand consists of two main islands and Stewart Island.

“The right thing to do is to give proper recognition to Maori and English place names.”

Devoid’s talking about an online map that shows which NZ place names are English language, and which are Maori. Surprise, surprise it shows there are far, far more non-Maori place names in the South Island than in the north.

Anyone who doubts that there is a push on to re-Maorify NZ place names (led by the Maori-dominated Geographic Place Names Board), should note this from the Hooerald report:

A spokesman for Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori – The Maori Language Commission – said a lot of work had recently been done by the people of Ngai Tahu, based in Te Waipounamu (South Island), to maintain Maori names for places, rivers and lakes in the south.

(The reporter seems unaware that Maori were – and are – mainly in the north. Maori settlements became very few, small, and widely separated south of Kaikoura, which is about the southern limit for growing kumara, which was a staple food.

Referring to the map, the spokesman said: “We think [the] resource is great not only for te reo Maori but for understanding our history and the bicultural naming of our land.”

        A friendly neighbour told me of a dear old soul who was interested in having the 2 females.
        
        I contacted her and told her that we had only managed to tame a male and a female, and the other female was still too shy to be touched. We had also been told by our vet that they were still too small to be desexed. The old dear decided she would have a look at them… and when we went to collect her, discovered she had already purchased a litter box, feeding dishes, pet toys etc and was dead keen to take the 2 tame moggies there and then.
        I was a bit worried that the kittens would in all probability outlive her, but as she has family in Gizzy, perhaps that’s not a real concern.
        
        So we are left with one shy female that wants to smooch our other 2 cats. They loathe her.
        Our big ragdoll runs away from the kitten, and our very elderly arthritic girl (19yr) attempts to swipe her.
        The 19yr old is fast approaching her shrub fertiliser position , so we’ll keep the kitten and in the not-too-distant future (we hope) become a 2-cat home again.

Announcement from the Pacific Islands tour:

Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters today announced proposed changes to New Zealand’s superannuation requirements that will make the system fairer for residents of Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau.

“The New Zealand Cabinet has agreed to make changes to the eligibility requirements for receiving New Zealand Superannuation and the Veteran’s Pension that will help level the playing field for people residing in the Realm counties,” Mr Peters says.

“Under the current system people must have lived in New Zealand for five years after turning 50 in order to be eligible for New Zealand Super. We will now allow residency in Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau after the age of 50 to count towards the eligibility requirements.

“This will mean that people who are eligible for New Zealand Super will be able to remain in these countries and contribute to the local economy without having to return to New Zealand just to qualify for their pension.

“These are changes which the Governments of Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau have advocated for. We will continue to work with them to ensure New Zealand’s superannuation requirements recognise the special constitutional relationships we have with the Realm countries,” Mr Peters says.

Minister for Social Development Hon Carmel Sepuloni will continue to progress these changes as a matter of priority.

The changes will take place by no later than January 2019.

Question: Does that mean the recipients of NZ super have to reside in NZ at all, or is this a payment for all NZ territory? And, do the Island residents pay any tax to NZ while living in the Islands or are their taxes kept within their respective Islands?

  – be present, and

  Here’s how it classes being lawfully resident:
  
  You are considered to be lawfully resident to apply for a benefit or pension if you live in New Zealand and:
  
  – you are not unlawfully resident in New Zealand or here on a temporary entry class visa or temporary permit*, or
  – you are a New Zealand citizen, or
  – you are an Australian citizen.
  (*Temporary permit includes a visitor’s permit, a limited purposes permit, a temporary work permit or a permit to be in NZ for the purposes of study at an NZ school or tertiary educational establishment).
  
  It adds: “Generally, if you leave New Zealand for more than 26 weeks you may not be considered ordinarily resident in NZ. If you spend more time outside of NZ than inside you are also not considered to be ordinarily resident in NZ.”
  
  On residence it includes:
  
  … for NZ Superannuation the minimum time you must have spent resident and present in New Zealand to qualify is ten years, five of which when you are aged 50 years or over.
  
  An interesting exception that churchgoing Islanders will be interested in is that if you do “missionary work (you do not need to show ordinary residence in NZ).”

  Na, if they meet criteria before the age of 50 (lived and worker here for a time/10 years), they no longer have to meet any after 50 test (part of this is to do with our housing shortage).
  
  The people will still have to support themselves from age 50 to 65 back in the islands if they are to take advantage if this.

So Cape Town has called off Day Zero – when they would have cut off domestic water supply to 4 million people. That would never have been a good thing in the tinderbox that is South Africa.

This is being spun as Cape Townians being heroes and the politicians being fine leaders.

However the real heroes in this are the farmers to have been responsible and taking care of their own water needs for decades, stepping up and donating their water to the city. “Donated” might be a bit benign, they were probably going to have the water nationalised anyway.

For many of them this means losing orchards which will take years to rebuild.

The big question of course is whether the sacrifice was worth it. Will the provincial and state government actually fix the problem, or will they just depend on the farmers stepping up for them again.?

    The Ngaruawahia incident you allude to Kimbo may well have been either a bit of a publicity distortion, if not a set-up.
    
    The woman who insulted the young Muslims seems to have been pretty much “out of it”, and one of the young Muslims offended turns out to have been the PR at a well known NZ organisation.
    
    The PC media certainly zeroed in on what would have been ignored had it been a white no-hoper jeering at a small Maori group, or a Maori no-hoper jeering at a small white group.

      As such, he may be making the awkward and embarassing assumption that the Auckland Uni student who was the subjectp of his post would have to decamp to some place overseas if she went back to “her shit hole”. Instead, it may be next door to Chuck Bird. ?

How many Maori are there in NZ?

In an article in the Southland Times today, Rino Tirikatene, the Labour MP for Tai Tonga (Southern Maori), says there “are almost a million of us”.

His column was headlined as “What the Maori Battalion Means”. It was interesting though I’ve not seen an article in the Southland Times for a long time mentioning the 23rd Battalion, in which so many Southland and Otago young men fought in World War 2. (The 23rd Battalion did feature in London’s “Telegraph” recently in an obituary of the colourful soldier General Sandy Thomas, who was a leader of it in World War 2.)

Tirikatene was writing about the death of Alfred (Bunty) Preece, of the Chatham Islands, the last surviving officer of the Maori Battalion.

In it he notes that when Preece was 20, there were about 100,000 Maori in NZ.

If there are a million now, or close to 20 per cent of the population, it is because “Maori” is being rebranded everyone with any Maori ancestry at all.

With high intermarriage in NZ, that means within a few generations everyone will be claimed as Maori, even though have as little as one-thirty-second Maori “blood” – that is they are 3.1 per cent Maori, which it is said is getting people accepted into one tribe. That means having one great-great-great grandparent as Maori. One more generation back (possible in another few decades) will take it to about 1.5 per cent.

No problem, except that the various incentives and reverse-discrimination incentives may now be absurd.

Tirikatene also says that, “unlike the rest of New Zealand’s forces in World War II, the Maori Battalion was made up entirely of volunteers. Maori did readily volunteer for the Army, but Maori were exempt from conscription. Sixty thousand New Zealanders volunteered for the Army, before conscription needed to be introduced. I’m not sure that New Zealanders were conscripted into air crew, or into the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm where many served, including at least one Ngai Tahu pilot. There were other volunteers, including for the Long Range Desert Group.

The public conversation to restore affordable housing began in earnest early 2005, with the release of the 1st Annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey .

Back in 2007, then Opposition Leader (now Sir) John Key made it clear within this interview that lack of land supply was the major problem.

This has been a near 14 year process of evolutionary change, with the engagement of the public and responsible media.

In turn this has pressured politicians to respond.

Public opinion is the driver, as increasing numbers of New Zealanders better understand the true costs of unnecessary politically induced housing inflation to themselves and their wider families.

The initial advocacy phase ran through to October 2012, with the major Government announcement to focus on land supply, infrastructure financing, process and construction costs.

Over recent years broader consensus ( more , more ) has taken place.

To illustrate further, just prior to Christmas 2017, Stephen Sellwood of Infrastructure New Zealand and Bill Evans of major builder Flatcher Living repeated again, that the focus must be on land supply and the appropriate debt financing of infrastructure.

We are now moving to the implementation phase, with a recent change to a centre – left Labour led reformist government.

Historically in New Zealand, Labour has been the political party of reform.

I have some unit trusts with ANZ, and I track their performance regularly, The NZ Shares trust rose a little on the last 2 months of 2017 but has now slumped back to Nov 2017 values. Before the election, it was a regular steady rise year on year. I think the impact of the new government is already being felt.

NZ is in the path of “possible” sites to be fallen on by chunks from China’s 9.5 ton space station, Tian-gong 1, which is set to come down soon.

That’s according to Popular Mechanics, as reported in the Washington Post, which says:

“Parts of the United States, the Iberian Peninsula, China, the Middle East, South America, Australia, and New Zealand are all potential reentry locations …”

The Chinese lost control of the space laboratory in September 2016.

One report is that chunks as big as 100kg could reach the ground – or sea.

The government is now discriminating against born citizens of New Zealand and permanent residents by changing the rules so kiwis face a higher burden to be eligible for National Superannuation over that of Island protectorates.

“Currently, those from the Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau are entitled to the New Zealand pension if they’ve lived and worked in New Zealand for 10 years after the age of 20, and spent another five years doing so once they have turned 50.

The changes announced today will see that last requirement scrapped.

Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters says the existing restrictions were unfair because they didn’t apply to immigrants from elsewhere in the world.

“In our country over 87,000 people who’ve come in the last 15 years to get a full pension after just 10 years,” he says. “Now see the inequity of that.”

Actually this isn’t fair at all. Currently eligibility is equal, the same rules apply to both NZ born and the islands but they are changing this to preferential treatment for those in the islands concerned as they won’t need to come back for the 5 years past 50 unlike a NZ born and bred person.

The requirement for people born in NZ to be eligible for NZ Super is:

“Are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident..To get NZ Super you must have lived in New Zealand for at least 10 years since you turned 20. Five of those years must be since you turned 50.”

Mr Hooton has been given the arse card from NBR.

Social media has been buzzing with rumours about long-standing columnist Hooton’s sudden dismissal from the publication.

Hooton’s firm, Exceltium, provided advice to the Act Party.
( That explains why ACT can’t make the grade. Why would anyone listen to Hooton?)

NBR publisher Todd Scott posted on Twitter that he had made the decision to end the relationship with Hooton before the complaint was lodged. It was reported that he was axed as part of a move away from lobbyists as columnists.

“I acted decisively, my seniors will confirm that I made my call ahead of any legal action from Mr Joyce. I can’t say that I personally agree with Matthew, but I will definitely be standing by him and defending his right to voice his insightful opinion,” he said.
