    The weasels are saying these aren’t new taxes, rather they are threshold tweaks to existing taxes.

Farming is under attack from the Ecomaniacs.

Stuff reports that a farmer ‘destroyed’ a third of country’s naturally-growing endangered shrubby tororaro plants in order to plant oats and… shock, horror… “The work is said to have also killed numerous other plants, lizards and birds and ruined their habitats.”

This guy bought a farm which was basically full of fucking weeds and turned it into productive land …. and now Forest and Bird is taking him to court!

  Depends. Was there a covenant protecting the tororaro? If there was, and the farmer blatantly ignored it, then there might be a court claim. However, if there wasn’t, then it’s his land and he can do as he pleases, despite what others may think!

    Hahaha that reminds me of my youth when I was a gardener working in the Sydney botanic gardens. We used to have lively alcohol fueled mock debates in the smoko room about “Is a weed a plant growing in the wrong place or a plant which is growing in (its) correct place?”
    
    Those were the days….. Most of the staff were Eastern European or Greek professionals who either elected for a change of life or couldn’t get their qualifications accepted in their chosen fields 😀

  (2) organised a QE2 covenant over the land,

  The planning rules enable the farmer to farm his land.
  I could not identify any limitation or restriction on farming activities.

    Yes, this is a change of tack for F&B..
    Advocacy is one thing, but threatening court action against a private citizen for the legal use of their own land is a new one, I think.
    
    I don’t think this approach will be appreciated by land owners. I find it much easier to inform land owners how they can manage their land whilst offering protection to the native species/ecosystems on their land.
    Often its just a matter of showing the farmer where a rare plant is located and discussing whether the track/stock etc can be relocated… or whether cuttings/seed can be collected. Most folks are keen to help as long as they are not being prohibited from earning their livelihood.

    Ive been off F&B for the longest possible time. Bought to a head years ago when I spoke at a NFP conference in Wellington, and the plump bespectacled girly from F&B started flirting with me afterwards, as my now deceased wife was standing next to me.
    
    Bless her, my wife took it all with a grin, and after said plumper left the scene, asked me if I was taking her (the wife) back to our room, or if I was going to save a whale in distress.

  Good point Dave. TVNZ ran a major report on this on the 6pm news last night. I did think that the story was very slanted against the farmer. He/She chose not to appear and apologised. The curious thing is how this was packaged as a major news event. It seems that TVNZ is rolling out political propaganda for the Government.

The government does not have money. They can afford nothing. It is only us dickhead taxpayers that actually have to afford this.

Tax is only effectively paid by a few net tax payers – those who may more tax than they consume. That’s likely less than 100,000 people in NZ.

Fresh from screwing their electoral voter base by denying them legislated tax cuts on April 1 2018.
Guess what? the ex bible bashing Parson a clown called David Clark who now is performly badly as a Peters selected Health Minister.
Clark’s latest role seems to be bashing the Hoi Polloi with his cancelling the cheaper doctors visits which was used as a bribe to get his gang of no hopers elected.
Wait there is more, sorry Coalition of Corruption and Chaos voters there is no money for your visits to your doctor promised on July 1 2018.Yet there seems to be plenty of money for the NZs self appointed Dictator Peters and his Foreign Affairs caper.
To think that Peters gang with David Clark aboard finds it more important to throw NZs hard earned tax money to Foreign Affairs as against the needs of poor manipulated and exploitated voters is an abomination.
Whatever happened to the saying “Charity Begins at Home”. Probably normally does ,except it is not every day that pests like Peters are running NZ.

Then he also massively increased the staffing of Foreign Affairs to no greater purpose than to gratify his ego…Key tried to rectify matters by reducing staff and even putting a private sector CEO in charge but the staff rebelled and McCully quailed and caved. Just heard a tax lawyer telling RNZ that the government must have ”industrial strength optimism” if it thinks many overseas online sellers will ”volunteer” to collect GST on the government’s behalf.
He thinks the govt may try to name and shame a few big operators, but people buy from thousands of companies in many countries, and most won’t even know of NZ, Nash, or GST.

      Our only hope for those companies is that they basically tell the NZ govt to ‘stuff off, you can’t force us to collect your tax’. And then just keep selling to us. I think the lawyer you refer to (Nat Radio this morning) did also say it was rather cheeky of our govt to ask overseas traders to collect NZ tax. Goodness me, the complexity of collecting different taxes for every dang country!!
      
      As I’ve said: level playing field OK, but there are plenty of things one simply can’t get in NZ.

        An itemised list is not a tax invoice, but it could work the same way as when you pay GST to DHL etc.
        
        I only use one credit card for all my purchases.
        
        This is problem with regulation. Cindy just says a few sentences, but the impacts are huge: every business (large and small) has to muck around with new accounting details etc.

  Ebay for example are only a conduit to a seller, who set out the individual sellers, from whom you choose which one you want.
  They are invariably a separate organisation and I cannot see them doing other than selling.

      But RWC that is as bad an idea as somebody thinking it can be done in a brown paper wrapping. Easier solution deposit amount in a designated NZ bank account send details of item to be purchased it will be ordered and paid for from the Philippines and sent as a “gift” to you direct. A sort of order call centre which could be well in place by the intended introduction date in 2019. More Kiwi ingenuity being exercised.

    @Paulus it also easy to buy through Ebay for their buyer protection for goods that are shipped from other countries. Have had goods from Japan and China via Ebay with one on the way from China, made in the Philippines now on it’s way to being received in the Philippines. ALL postal items arrive duty and VAT free via post with the only catch being that the local Post Office charge a standard fee of P112 (NZ$3.00) per parcel. However have one recent delivery that took 4 days from China and was actually delivered to the door without any other charges. Ordered in Ebay USA and shipped through one of the major couriers postal service.

  Quite a lot of shopping happens through aliexpress – which is a collection of many different online shops that come and go.
  
  Big questions are:
  1) How are the government going to monitor all those aliexpress shopfronts and determine which are selling more than $60k a year to NZ and are thus liable to collect GST.
  2) How are they going to force these people to have extra GST pricing for NZ?
  3) How are they going to ensure that the customers in NZ get the paperwork they need to claim back GST? I buy a few thousand dollars of stuff every year from overseas for business purposes. I will need GST invoices so I can claim it back.

    On imports, your customs agent will be forced to collect it from you as is currently the practice for importing over $400
    If you don’t have one the carrier will be forced to collect it, you won’t get your goods until you pay.
    It’s (for over $400) called “GST off set”
    They determine the value of the goods (in case you supplier lies, heaven forbid) and charge GST on that.

      A thousands of dollars of imports are not in one hit. About 20% are over the current $400 threshold and the rest are under.
      
      The custom agent also charges a hefty fee ($60 or so) to process the transaction. Adding an extra $60 to a $100 purchase is going to cause problems.

    Perhaps cmm although the problem of GST recovery from legitimate business expenses only serves to make this plan eve messier. However all Aliexpress purchases are paid through Alipay where those funds are held in “escrow” until the goods have been confirmed as received. The funds are then paid to the supplier providing there is no dispute raised by the buyer.
    The buyers has 15 days to raise a dispute and if no resolution is agreed then Aliexpress will arbitrate. It is all part of the Buyer Protection Plan and works very well as long as the dispute is justified by strong evidence provided when submitted.
    The BPP guarantees a full refund if goods not received or full or partial refund if the item is not as described. Never had a dispute fail which have included partial refund for quality/finish issues and a full refund for wrong goods supplied without the need to return wrong goods.

      But RW Capitalist you forgot the Health sector where technology has become a very big part of the “cost of service” adding extended life expectancy . Sadly as a result of the COL that just got a whole lot more expensive to provide and in a funny way see them actually end up “underfunding” to a greater level than they so often accuse National of.
      In real terms the Health budget will contain a very high degree if imported content with equipment, drugs and suppliers. If the NZ$ continues as it has in the last couple of weeks then whatever is allocated in sweet cheeks budget will only be a starting point. We can expect most DHB’s to struggle to maintain current care levels let alone increase their productivity without serious blowouts. When considered along with the warnings of the need to lower expectations by Ministers and Departments in this budget it does not bode well. Not forgetting they have yet to find a solution to meet nurses pay demands without even thinking about the groups ready to get some “shared wealth”.
      There biggest elephant like drawback is that even with so many tax increases that are not new taxes (sarc) none are instant lifelines and will not be flowing very soon. The best is yet to come but one can’t but get a bit of a queasy feelz about the future.

    Too late Harkman the currency started to tank after the O&G announcement and did not respond to the Commie Chick “arranging” a trade deal with the EU and the UK. It has not shown this level of slump since the big drop when the COL was formed as it bottomed out at NZ$0.68 to the US$. It is now again looking like dropping below NZ$0.70 perhaps by Friday.
    It’s a double edged affair for NZ since it is good for exports but tough on those who suffer most from increased prices while the Government grows even without the budget borrowing rush starts. Not to mention making offshore buying more expensive even before the new GST is applied. Expect also a rapid change in attitude to the regional fuel tax above the Bombay Hills as those Fool Factors (unintended consequences) kick in way ahead of it being applied. On the other hand it might bring a rush of freedom campers who get more for their buck and enjoy pinching off a loaf in the open air.

There was a time, for example a couple of years ago, when this would have been cause for prophesies of doom & gloom. Now, however, the Secretary of the Treasury says he’s unconcerned.

On a happier note – I saw something I never thought possible the other day on a trip into Wanga-vegas.
A line of traffic coming along the river road (Anzac Parade) and a long line of traffic coming down Dury Hill to a give way sign. Guess what happened

The traffic merged perfectly. It was like a choreographed movement. Nobody was impatient and everyone played their part.

First time I have ever seen traffic actually merge like a zip.

  Now drive down Victoria Ave and the smile will be wiped off your face. The other day there was a large ute angled parked on one side and a delivery van angled parked directly opposite. There was only room between the two for a bicycle to pass. The whole street ground to a stop until the delivery van wanted to exit. Problem, all the cars behind it needed to backup to let it out. Took five minutes to orchestrate this. Great entertainment while I drank my coffee.

With less 6 weeks to go, our elderly primagravida is showing the strain. You would expect that and anyone in that position should be dialing it back. In fact they should have never tried to do both at the same time.

I have predicted that she will get a doctor’s note, pull a sickie and step down soon (next two weeks). I was expecting she might not come back for the May sitting, but now I think the budget announcement on 17th May is a much better bet.

They have already crowned Robbo as the next Labour leader. The budget is likely to be a roaring mess.

That makes me think she’s going to step down just before the budget and do a hospital pass to Robbo.

Lots of MSM drama over “Is Our Princess Sick?”, “She’s a hero who nearly worked herself to death for us.”, “Doctor says Cindy must rest.”, “Baby OK, here are the ultrasounds”.

This will provide a massive squirrel-bomb for when Labour will need it most: diverting attention from the budget.

Who help the kids with rote learning skills? Who know that teachers can’t do it all: children need a lot of home support to do really well at school?

      CL is correct, the news item was on Morning Report this morning. Basically, Maori educationalists ate wanting the govt to resume funding an expensive intervention programme to make Maori students feel good about themselves. The programme was abandoned in 2013 because it was expensive & had limited results.

    It’s not colour its genetics. Maori have a mean IQ of 85 on an international comparative basis and Asians 105 with the typical Kiwi whitey at 100. That puts the average of Maori achievement likelyhood at the bottom 1/3 of the white population. No schooling can fix that.

        The silly bugga refused to do it online… and demanded paper copies.
        Muggins here filled them in and sent them off.
        Then we got a letter from Stats (no longer Statistics Dept) stating that our household had been selected for a household interview survey- which one of us legally had to complete.
        
        So “Murray” Stats Dept turned up last Sat morning to interview me as to whether I am “Gay”, happy, live in a mouldy house, scared to walk around the neighbourHOOD at night, etc.
        I asked if this interview was revenge for not doing the census on-line…

Consider the results nearly eight months on from the election.

Anyone with income over $25K is paying $1,000 more tax annually than they would have under National, from April 1 2018.
– Doctors visits are more expensive than they would have been under National.
– New taxes are announced daily despite the ‘no new taxes’ pledge.

Where’s the money gone ?
– First year Uni drinking fund.
– Some Pacific Islanders super payments (who have never contributed to NZ) .
– Multiple committees etc for ex Labour MP’s and hangers on.
– Shane Jones NZ First re-election fund.
– To fill the $B hole National was castigated for pointing out pre-election.

And still the Beehive media team fluff and gush over what a wonderful job our PM is doing.

Pre-election, both parties agreed the economy was in good health and offered plenty of options.
Now Labour cry ‘crisis’ and the media suck it up.

With his trademark swagger and flair for the theatrical, he left the stage after just three minutes.

Jones had done what he needed to do – alert would be investors the Government is looking for infrastructure investment partners.

The message he sent was clear: without private capital and large-scale investment, New Zealand’s infrastructure deficit cannot be repaired.

Finance Minister Grant Robertson and Transport and Housing Minister Phil Twyford have both said as much in recent weeks.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern highlighted the extent of the problem. It’s so bad, she claims, that the Budget’s primary focus will be repairing the deficit.

“Since January, the City Mission had provided more than 3000 emergency food parcels, containing more than 49,000 cans of food, a 28 per cent increase on the 2334 distributed in the same period last year”.

So the poverty gravy train just keeps on rolling.
Despite the governments promise to eliminate it but after the election “corrected” to reduce it, poverty according to this article is in fact still getting worst, yes not better but worst.
So what have all the apologists and sycophants for the government got to say about this situation?.
Oh give them a chance, soon you will see change and things will improve.
Yeah well keep blowing smoke out your ass because that is not going to happen for two good reasons:
1.If you had 9 years in opposition to come up with solutions but now in government you need more time then put quite simply you are either incompetent or just out of your depth. You choose which.
2.Poverty if you want to call it that has always been around and always will be for a myriad of reasons so any organisation or person claiming they are going to fix it is either delusional or a liar. Again you choose which.

  There used to be a different value system around charity: Charity was there for the most needy, but if you didn’t absolutely need it you didn’t take it.
  
  Now that’s changed. It’s seen by many as a “free shopping” and you’d be a fool to go pay for something when you can get it free at the food bank.
  
  You can’t tell me all those people turning up for the free Chirstmas meals are all homeless and downtrodden. Nope, for many it’s a good free feed – no cooking required and someone else even does the washing up. It’s like going to a returant and somebody else pays. Got to be a fool to pass that up.

Just got an email from ANZ reminding me my Kiwisaver account will be getting a free $521 dollars from the government.

Free? FREE? Fuck off! It isn’t free. I’m paying for it!

But due to the extra administration costs running it through government bureaucracy it is not costing $521, but probably $600.

Then most of the 2.7 million Kiwisaver participants (say 2 million) are getting the $521 and only the 100,000 or so net tax payers are paying.

That means I’m paying 20x$600 = $12000 and getting back $521.

Free my arse!

  A mid-range restaurant lists it at $7
  Poncy wine bar sells it at $9.
  
  Who gets the difference, now that Countdown and restaurant alike put it up to $8?
  – OKBeer Co? (along with an incentive to make masses of cheap beer)
  – The retailers? (thus receiving a government-mandated profit hike, and the sports clubs etc a great fundraising option,thus incentivising and rewarding the sale of cheap alcohol – the type beloved of binge drinkers)
  – The government? (an effective tax on cheaper brands of alcohol drunk by the “poor”)
  
  What about the consumer? If OKBeer Co’s cheap beer is now $8, but QualityBrewPub’s prize-winning beer is unaffected at $10, then what does that do to the market?

On this defamation warning post, does anyone if a claim by the police is covered by some “history wipe” legislation? I.e. after 7 years they wipe your convictions, and then they can report you have never been convicted. I think the US may have such a thing, do we too?

I’m not suggesting in anyway that this is the case with Clarke Gayford, he should be totally out of limits, as he is not running for office.

But in case some lawyer knows how things work here with historic convictions.

It is entirely unacceptable and politicians families should be left out of politics.” Should politicians families be left out of politics? Sure. If they chose to keep a low profile. But Gayford has been a key part of the packaging and the story and the sales pitch of brand Labour, and the stardust of the celebrity couple Jacinda and Gayford. From how their romance started, to his twitter responses, to his celebrity photoshoots. Gayford has been very much part of the campaign. Any defamation is wrong.       I really agree – with all points.
      
      Families should be left out of politics – by everyone. It’s Jacinda, Clarke, and Labour who are bringing him ‘into’ politics.
      
      Bill English managed to have a long career and I have to say I had no idea who his family was until he resigned. But they weren’t thrust in front of cameras on frequent occasions or writing media statements haranguing the public for one thing or another. Key’s family was similar – apart from the media chasing them, which was increasingly often and often negative.
      
      Jacinda and Clarke make a habit of his presence in the media to promote ‘their’ image – and occasionally ‘lecture’ the public. Like the Kardashians, if you do that, you’re setting yourself up and have no justification for complaint when people comment. Probably, the same is going to apply to the baby.
      
      But, of course, it’s okay when the left-wing MSM do it to those they’re against.

      Well we have long since past ‘leaving families’ out of politics with the Jacinda Ardern Royal Family, appointment of Her father to high position of office, and the Baby of the Nation, and the First Man and that all that carry on….
      
      Frankly her entire family are up to their eyeballs in political involvement, I am only surprised that her boyfriend (yes the royal marriage is being saved for when popularity hits a low) wasnt ran as the joint, Labour-Green-Winston First party candidate for the Northcote by-election, really surprised me with that one. Perhaps he will be made Governor General or some such instead? (although that position was only recently filled)….
      
      And the attempt to build a cult of personality arround this person and all the tagger alongs, it’s the same sickening BS that sees the Dictator of NK worshipped, litterally deified and turned into a god, and worshipped in schools….
      
      Speaking of such, she is awfully fond of those school photo-opps isn’t she…. Kind of reminds me of those North Korean-murals of the deer leader in the schools with the children…
      
      And it may seem like an exageration, but if we get another 3 or so terms of this, I don’t think it will be far from the truth! What bothers me about this is that the truth is submerged in the interests of one person.
It has been submerged by Judge, Police, Media and the various others who have aided and abetted this.

I simply have no faith in the Justice system nor the police on the basis that they are covering up alleged crimes.
If they are wondering why police on the front line have low moral they need to look no further than their management and its policy.

Same applies to the Judges. What principles do they live by?
Are they bought so cheaply. Its seems they are.

Not good at all.
Where there is smoke there is fire. There is every reason to say we disbelieve those promoting this lack of Transparency.
We actually don’t give a shit what he did really. Like the rest of us he needs to stand up and be accountable and apologize to others for his misdemeanor.

Waitakere Local By-election postal ballots have just arrived in mail boxes, and Labour announces, after ballots arrive, a get out the vote meeting including door knocking. It’s extroadinary that this is legal. Will they be asking people to give them their voting papers to post on their behalf? Will people feel pressured to vote labour because they are standing at their door and potentially asking for their papers. It’s legal here but illegal elsewhere. I’d like to see a change to legislation where door knocking on private residences is illegal after the voting papers have been posted.

  Just got my first nz high school report. They have 4 columns for each subject. 1 Attitude towards learning, 2. Self Management Skills 3. Relates well to others in class 4. Understanding of Ideas and Skills.
  Only 1 of those has anything to do with proficiency in the subject. Attitude and Relating. Lots of emphasis on how well you are liked by your teachers and your peers. Only 1 out of 4 is about proficiency in the subject.

Winston Peters returns from the political wilderness to talk about dirty politics™:

It’s just a part of the black ops politics that have been happening in this country for some time. The only people who would be behind it would be the people who would seek to be politically advantaged by it. Have a wild guess who that might be?”

Peters wouldn’t go so far as to name anyone or any organisation, telling media they could draw their own conclusions. But he said he had been a victim of a black ops campaign himself. “I’m not going to stand around here and let people plead their innocence when their background has been one, in some cases, of engaging in political filth and dirt.”

So Winston Peters won’t let people “plead their innocence”, but he’s yet to prove in a court of law that they leaked revelations that he received higher superannuation payments than he was entitled to for seven years: Peters’ supersized super – the missing letters.

I wonder how his court case is going.

  It’s obvious that he hates National with a passion, so he has got to be a suspect for undertaking a psy-op and blaming it on National. There’s also the possibility that he fabricated the superannuation over-payment scandal because he wasn’t getting enough coverage in the run up to the last election.

The story about their being no story about Gayford is being reported all over the world. They all make a frantic point of telling us a ~~man in a costume~~ policeman said it, so it must be true.

Everyone will now want to know what it was that is not being investigated. This will invite all sorts of interesting speculation, creating even more rumours.

Gayford’s lawyer, hired to represent him (for what we don’t know) has threatened immediate legal action if anyone says a word (about what we don’t know)

Somehow I don’t think the damage control is helping her client 🙂

    No. The first thing is in another jurisdiction. The other is not a crime.
    
    The fact the police are not investigating [me] is different to saying I am a saint. Also the police do not pursue morality matters. They also need evidence and a chance of securing a conviction. So the fact there is no investigation underway does not say much.
    
    We don’t know what was said and we can’t say anyway… or the high priced lawyers will come after us.

        The problem here is that the NZ public are being threatened with legal action for discussing something about Gayford. We have not been told what. So any innocent remark could result in legal proceedings based on Gayford’s denials, which you seem to uncritically assume makes it a “lie”.
