      Right waikatogirl but can’t shake off an uneasy feeling that is some serious pain ahead for hard working taxpayers in the first sweet cheeks budget. After battling through some very choppy water for over a month and the budget due in 13
      ( known as an unlucky number) days there has been a rash of spending being announced by the COL. Dunedin’s new hospital and finally something seems to be ahead to address poverty/homelessness that we gathered from it’s lack of prominence had been solved. It is very dubious that such a rush of quick-fire announcements proceeding any budget can only mean A) another scandal is about to hit the fan or B) we are going to be hit hard in the budget. Especially after so much prior warning of struggling to find enough funding for Ministers expectations as well as broken promises. It is very noteworthy after the Middlemore beat up how they rush to stretch so many issues out so far to find a figure that paints a black picture. Thus attempting to make them look like the good guys as the tackle these “problems”.

    Celebritydom scribbler Simon Wilson in the Hooerald asks “why doesn’t National support the regional fuel tax?”.
    
    He writes of Auckland’s portion of the tax:
    
    ” The $28b will come roughly two-thirds from central government and one third from the council. It relies on a regional fuel tax, levied by the council, that will bring in $150 million a year: $1.5b over the 10 years. More importantly, that money will be leveraged. It will attract a 1:1 subsidy from government and development income as well, taking it to an expected $4.3b.
    
    That’s a remarkable win for Auckland: we’ll pay 10c a litre, plus GST, and get almost three times as much benefit from it.”
    
    As one of the 60 to 70 per cent of New Zealanders who live outside Auckland, I guess I should be saying, “You’re welcome to our tax money, Aucklanders.”
    
    Wilson and the Hooerald are propagandising in favour of Labour’s petrol tax.
    
    Does anyone outside Labour and the Greens still subscribe to the Hooerald?

      What Wilson is not saying is:
      1. The people who will get very little benefit out of the ATAP plan will pay the tax because they have to use cars as transport. While those benefiting from the lolly scramble don’t pay much, as they will get more splashed out on them e.g. Dominion Road bus users will get a shinny new tram set;
      2. Most of the projects listed will do nothing or very little to address any transport issues in Auckland; and
      3. Residents in Hibiscus Coast-Bays and Rodney will pay substantial amounts of tax & tolls for Penlink, that will need to be made 4 lanes within 10 years of opening (sound familiar?)
      
      Then there are all the cycle projects that will do nothing except add to congestion.
      
      Is that enough reasons for National to oppose Twitford/Goofy & JAG’s planned regional fuel tax?

    If this was really a big concern for Sharon (Kath&Kim) Woods, then they would not have made the moronic frontal lobotomy decision to axe oil & gas development in NZ. It should be drill baby drill but instead, we’ve got complete dropkicks making decisions without any consultation with the industry, Treasury or even any cost/benefit analysis.   * Petrol price will be down to 25d a gallon. That will need to be inflation adjusted of course – only $2.20 a litre.
  * Ration coupons of 4 gallons per family per week.
  
  The primary thing pushing petrol prices up is tax. About a dollar out of every litre of petrol is either excise or GST.

  Businesses with branches will always consider pricing and location-don’t supermarkets do that too? Competitors do exist in markets.
  
  Even worse the “Minister” is threatening heavy and expensive nuisance through increasing departmental power to examine businesses they don’t like. That is bullying. Criminal?
  
  Not our sort of government–oops they were selected not elected.

      You are quite right. He didn’t keel over.
      I can remember a lot of people making rude remarks about his weight though. Mostly those on the far left of the spectrum of course. The same people who got enraged when Me Too was described as a Teletubby.
      On the other hand I can remember commenting myself on at least one occasion that Gerry should lose a lot of weight for the sake of his health. It seems to be a very unhealthy lifestyle being an MP.

  May be she should get out more & then she’ll find:
  1. There is some profiteering at the pump (even within Auckland); and
  2. There is competition, even when stations are only 2km to 3km apart (you just need to have a Gull & a BP less than 500m apart).
  
  So, the market is not as competitive (low prices for all) as some would like & Gull is not in the lower South Island, that does not equal a broken market. Besides, she doesn’t have any solutions to what she perceives are problems, except more legislation.

    I suggest you make a close examination of Gull’s business strategy before you start extolling them. Basically they want other Oil companies to bear thew cost of supplying their fuel anywhere outside of Tauranga.
    They also, for a long time, didn’t actually pay the full duty on the fuel they sold. That did, in the end, get stamped on and they had to pay about $22 million in duty they had evaded.
    They are also Australian owned of course.

      alwyn, Yes, I’m aware of their model of importing refined fuel from Aust etc. & yes they are Aussie owned as opposed to Z & Caltex (both Infratil) v BP & Mobil.
      
      Gull have done a good job at keeping the big 4 honest. As the work commissioned last year be Judith Collins found, most of the fuel price comprised taxes & margin to the operator. Fuel cost & cost of sales of a litre of fuel is a relatively small proportion of what is paid at the pump.
      
      Consider this, companies like Mobil (Exxon) & BP are able to control the supply (& therefore the price) of fuel from the moment it is extracted to the moment it is dispensed at a petrol station. With the collusion of government’s around the world, Exxon & BP have financial & economic clout that is greater than most countries. So, if Gull gets one over on the big oil international oil companies, it can only be to the benefit of New Zealanders and our economy.

        I think you are a bit out of date. The days of Exxon and the rest of the “Seven Sisters” controlling the World Oil Market finished about 30 years ago. The dominant player now is Saudi Aramco, wholly owned by the Saudi Government. It has at least 10 times the reserves of the next biggest company.
        5 of the 8 largest Oil companies, by revenue, are state owned. The only public companies in there are Exxon, Shell and BP at 5, 6 and 8.

Twitford is putting building prices under the spotlight, but he didn’t mention unintended consequences. We all want cheaper building materials, but I can smell unemployment on the horizon, especially given Fletcher Building has gone bust. Our whole economy is built on expensive trades and services and can’t easily be dismantled by a Minister’s decree; or by threatening with a big stick.

  I haven’t seen the memo yet from Twitford about the future redundancy of gas appliances in home yet to be built. If we are going to run out of gas in 7 – 8 years, is it prudent to be designing and installing gas appliances in these yet to be built 10,000 homes?

    NZ must have hundreds (possibly thousands) of motels and hotels that use instant gas hot water systems for the thousands of bathrooms each suite has …
    
    Hundreds (possibly thousands) of restaurants and cafe’s cook with gas where available …
    
    People have pointed out the likes of hospitals and other organisations use gas heating ….
    
    I guess Labour expects them to collectively fork out hundreds of millions of dollars to replace them with electricity (and compete for capacity with EV charging) or collectively fork out tens millions of dollars each year to import gas from overseas and watch NZ’s hard earned $$$ (millions) leave the country each year – I guess there will also be hundreds of more heavy LPG gas carrying trucks on the roads (let’s hope not one of these hundreds of extras are involved in a crash)!
    
    The dimwitted Labour and Greens COL, brought to you by WinstonFirst, whom none of them didn’t even bother to research any of this as a government and have absolutely no idea of the impacts and consequences and couldn’t care less that the cost of living will increase for everyone including the low income and poor people!

      It is major users of reticulated gas (including for electricity generation) who will be caught out first. The cost of their gas will rise more steeply than for small users and will plateau out at whatever it coses to import LNG from Australia etc. For those who need lots of heat energy (hospitals, dairy factories and some other industries), they will weigh up between persisting with gas, or changing to coal or liquid fuels (ie diesel or heating oil) and the odds is those on gas will stick with it (despite a coal ad years ago showing the janitor at Kings High School, Dunedin proudly showing off his school’s coal fired central heating boiler).

        I would laugh very hard if – for example – a proposed pulp and paper mill in Northland was canceled because of insecure energy supplies to run its boilers, the investors citing the need for certainty over the 50 year life of the plant and the uncertainty over foreign investment regulation.

      Gas cooking is the best, as every cook knows: instant temperature control. Asian friends of mine changed from gas to electric and deeply regret it, as some of their delectable recipes just don’t work so well without gas cooking.

In breaking news….The prison south of Te Awamutu is not warm & comfy & apparently not fit for human occupation. It is an outrage.

They are locked up in their cells for 22 hours a day. What an outrage.

Good I say, that is what prison should be, not some holiday at a 5 star resort

i just looked at her background, she is hardly qualified with her degree in history to make such statements.

Why do we have MP’s coming in like this with no idea about the subject matter and being able to act like experts?

The situation is that we have a private company making internal pricing decisions at a national level . So they subsidise prices from one outlet with those at another? So what! They did not break any laws.

The only person close to breaking the law seems to be megan woods by eagerly utilising information from stolen emails.

What is she going to do? Regulate company pricing decisions? Like she can do it better than the companies themselves? Laughable . She is a joke, and apparently a communist!!

BP are the last of the major oil companies that service the NZ market ad as we have seen before they are an easy target for the envy brigade who target big business. Using a leaked internal document that talks about how they cope with strong competitive discounting is reprehensible to start with but trying to blow that out to be something sinister is a step too far. DPF’s Disclosure Statement is lengthy and comprehensive. His affiliation with the National Party is fully disclosed, but to be fair, anyone that didn’t know that DPF was involved with National must have come down in the last shower.

Little has done a reasonable job of keeping his Angry Andy persona hidden since Labour was annointed by Winston Peters, but the mask slipped last night. I suggested to Mr Little that an apology to DPF might have been in order, but he has not responded.

The current story in the media about BP and the petrol market being “broken” is nothing more than a smoke screen to draw attention away from the Auckland fuel tax announcement.

There’s something really whiffy about this.

Practically the same day the Auckland tax is announced theses “leaked” emails appear and the government and media do a big coordinated pile in on BP.

Which makes you ask the question did the government leak these emails to the media and if that is indeed the case how did they get hold of it?

Heres how they operate.Heard a couple of Labour Party bullies threatening fire and brimstone to some people for different reasons.
First it was the unfortunate hawk faced female from a legal firm,who has had a personality bypass, writing a bullying letter to anyone who said anything about a wee mammys boy called Clark. Appears the hawk face letter writer was told that the mammys boy Clark was complaining that people had been “mean to him”.
Then there was the other Peters selected person from the Labour Party who seemed to threaten BP .not sure if it was about the quality of pies or something else. Maybe it was the pies. After all she looks like she never missed a meal in her life.
. Perhaps it was the cost of petrol even though the same pie eaters, Peters selected Labour Party had just socked some NZs with a huge petrol cost gouge of at least 20cents a litre price increases on Tuesday.Just a couple of threats dished out this week from Labours hawk faces and teletubbies.
Watch this space seems there is much much more jackboot bullying to come from the “Coalition of Corruption and Chaos”.

Now that we are on about Oil companies. How about our head in the sand Commerce Commission and our so called Consumers Council taking a look at the usurious blatant money grab by Banks and Airlines and Travel Companies and Phone Companies.
Couple cases in Point. Banks with their massive credit card interest rates of 20% plus even though they have five star security by most borrowers.
Then there is the Airline and travel companies gouging users when they book a trip. The crime of the booker is not to have an internet bank account. Evidence seems to show that there is a conspiracy between Airlines,Travel Companies and Banks. Surely not in our fair law abiding country of NZ.
Next it is the Phone companies with Spark the biggest offenders.They gouge their customers with a $2.50 Paper charge account on their bill.
All because not everyone has an internet bank account. What a bloody scam by many of our Phone Companies.
Think it is time that the Commerce Commission and Consumers Council mouth pieces got off their big fat arses and just for once earn their keep,with the massive salaries they get for just paying lip service to the mentioned NZs money scammers and grabbers.

Just yesterday they promised midwives a pay rise. They are spending money hand over fist in Healthcare, not on new drugs or equipment just wages. Healthcare workers have negative productivity in NZ, say they spend $10b on health, you’ll only get $9 billion in GDP etc.

Matthew Hooton’s efforts re Gayford may have some effect but I think he’s whistling in the wind.

Gossips are persistent – always have been. That’s why a lot of us were taught at Primary School about Chinese whispers. There are a lot of malicious human beings out there for a wide variety of reasons. But one of his statements is ludicrous:

“When you hear a rumour about a political figure, especially if it comes from several sources over many months and in slightly different forms, ask yourself: could it really be true the rumour is reaching you so often yet is unknown to the Herald? Could it be true the Herald failed to investigate it? And if the investigation proved it true, is it plausible the Herald wouldn’t run it straight away to scoop the competition?”

Oh yes. The MSM have been shown, and continue to be shown to be, outright liars and/or telling ‘convenient (mis)truths’ or parts of truths – whenever and however it suits their particular political purposes and/or social agenda. They’re also subject to political pressure, just like Bush appears to have been. There are probably millions of examples, large and small, but I can think of one major one over the years.

What is the ‘truth’ of Helen Clarke’s ‘gender’ (self and/or public) and how bona fide is her ‘heterosexual marriage’ (in other than a legal sense)? What has been the truth over her many years in politics? Rhetorical questions. I don’t really want to know the answer to that. But to suggest that the MSM have presented the ‘truth’ to the public about it at any point is ludicrous.

There are people who believe in conspiracies because there are, at times, conspiracies. There are even more examples of misdirection, unequal emphasis, excerpted facts, and one-sided versions. And the thing is, it can work so well that other people find it a really good strategy to employ – they follow the example – just as the MSM and lobby groups use strategies they’ve learned from others to achieve their desired ends – often some of the worst monsters in history. That’s why it will go on.

The only way to stop or prevent it is to stand up with some integrity and speak your truth – like Israel Folau – and look what’s happening to him. There’s always someone ready to attack. It’s easy to end up like Charlotte Dawson.

“Gayford is a victim of an ancient and natural phenomenon but one social media makes more severe. Bush’s intervention was the only realistic option to give Gayford some redress. It was unfortunate Ardern initially chose not to play with a similarly straight bat but to imply the ludicrous talk about Gayford was itself the result of a dark plot.”

Exactly. Ardern is as bad as everyone else. Neither is she realistic or honest about it.

I said once, a few elections ago, any woman (man) who did not acknowledge John Key as a role model they would prefer to marry, or have their daughter (son) marry, is not worthy of the ‘title’. The same applies to Bill English. I meant it and I’m not personally attracted to either of them. It’s about a man who is a loyal, faithful, supportive, protective husband and father who is also a reliable and good provider – who takes commitment and hard work to achieve that very seriously and lives it every day of his life, with a good dose of humility in that role.

The reality is that Gayford and Ardern are claiming the same status for him (and her, come to that) without any substance to back it up (beyond the MSM pushing the message) – and it will be a long time before any such substance would be apparent. They may be ‘middle aged’ but they’re only at the beginning of any real experience of life with very fragmented ‘commitment’. That’s why I agreed readily with Deborah Hill Cone and don’t think she was being ‘nasty’ at all – perhaps trying to capture what the difference is.

The reality is, it’s all PR spin – and spin he seems to ‘lap up’. Not that you can blame him. But it’s false – and that’s not any ‘tall poppy’ syndrome. He, and Ardern, would be better off to acknowledge and accept it with some humility than to be standing on any non-existent dignity or that which derives from the efforts of others. Their ‘dignity’ is, itself, their own deliberate use of a type of misinformation. They’re also pushing the demand that you acknowledge and respect someone only for their image, power, or position, not for any actions, ethics or integrity. Most people have to give in to that to some extent to survive, but few really like or respect it, and a lot actively resent it.

This juvenile kerfuffle could have been an opportunity to actually learn something constructive about our selves and society – including Gayford and Ardern. Instead, it’s just the usual PR MSM circus and a cynical and malevolent ‘power-play’ from Ardern to her opposition. Of course it will go on because ‘image’ is all she’s/they’ve got and they vehemently do not want to acknowledge it.

    One major one, which has been almost completely lost in the Left/liberal tyranny, is that people bring honour to positions – or not. Positions do not successfully bring honour to people.
    
    The character of a PM brings honour to PMship, not the other way round. When the character of a PM does not bring honour to the PMship, it is brought into derision and contempt.
    
    The Queen brings honour to the monarchy, not the other way round. If/when Charles/Camilla enter the role, the monarchy will be hugely diminished – unless or until William/Catherine take over.
    
    Knighthoods are brought honour by their recipients. Handing out honours to those not publicly acknowledged to deserve them simply destroys respect for the honours system.
    
    The honourable character of people brings honour to the House of Lords, not the opposite. Which is why the current lack of honour by the Lords is bringing the House into disrepute and may destroy it.
    
    Jesus Christ brings honour to being a Christian – because of his character/actions. Being a Christian does not necessarily bring honour to Christ or to the Christian Church – and when those Christians fail, attacks Christ and the institution.
    
    The All Blacks management have had that down to a fine art. The honour of being an All Black derives from the excellence of previous and current players. No lesser player derives honour from being an All Black – or not for very long because it would destroy the value of being an All Black.
    
    That is precisely the problem in the last few decades – like Obama being given a Nobel Peace Prize before having done anything.
    
    The Left/liberal hand out ‘honours’ demanding that the public value and respect the recipients – when there’s nothing to respect them for. It may have temporary, limited success – but it is limited, and temporary, and ultimately just destroys the value of or belief in the ‘honour’.

Interestingly though, Soper reveals that even the Clerk of the House, David Wilson, made a submission opposing the Bill on the basis that it is in breach of the Bill of Rights!

The fate of this Bill sits with the Green Party. Will they have the guts to stand up and do the right thing, as recommended by former Green Party co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons? She has said this:

Fitzsimons started her submission by noting she had voted against similar bills four times before.

“Integrity cannot be legislated for. It is a matter of conscience and judgment,” Fitzsimons said.

“This bill offends the freedom of conscience, freedom of speech, and freedom of association.”

She said parties were only important as bureaucratic structures giving effect to “coherent political philosophies”.

“A party is not what matters. What a party stands for is what matters,” Fitzsimons said.

“If my party started voting for the death penalty or the invasion of foreign countries or a massive increase in the use of fossil fuels, I’d leave it, might even start a new party.”

She said proportionality was distorted all the time without Parliament intervening.

I always knew things would get very dark and ominous with a socialist authoritarian running the country. However I am concerned that her attacks on the people and their freedoms have begun escalating so rabidly.

I thought this would only happen near the end of her term when she was more widely loathed and the facade had crumbled away.

But here we are after a few months living in a country where even speaking of the dear-leaders family can land you in court, with our top policeman coming out and making political statements to support the dear-leader and her cronies. The media is gagged and can only report favourably on the dear-leaders glorious entourage.

People need to wake up and see this evil bag of bones for what she is.

So Likud’s embedded New Zealand reporter acknowledges there is a name-association between him and the phrase “Dirty Politics” …and in doing so finds a way to portray himself as a political player by shamelessly shoe-horning himself into a story for gratuitous PR, as well as plant the idea that the spreading of the Clarke Gayford rumours was a Labour Party false flag op from the beginning:

Radio LIVE asked me to go on air with Sainso yesterday to answer allegations made about me by inference from the NZ Herald, Nicky Hager and directly on at least two blogs:

Controversial right-wing blogger Cameron Slater “categorically refutes” having anything to do with the allegations swirling around Clarke Gayford.

…RadioLIVE’s Mark Sainsbury says Mr Slater’s name has been linked to this.

Appearing on his show on Thursday, Mr Slater says he had nothing to do with the “scurrilous rumours” being spread, arguing he’s “no friend of the National Party“, and “it’ll be a cold day in hell before I do anything to help them“. He blames “Labour Party people” for the allegations going viral.

“They’re trying desperately to try and hang this on me, but I had nothing to do with it,” he says.

“In fact, quite the contrary. People who are associated with me had notified Jacinda personally on February 12 of the seriousness of these allegations. So the Prime Minister has known about them since February.”

Ms Ardern says she “won’t comment on dirty politics” and would “smile through” the smear attempt. But Mr Slater accuses her of “using a despicable term” coined by a “fiction-writer”

“This is a response finally from the Prime Minister’s department, from the Labour Party, but unfortunately they decided to try and make it into a shabby hit-job,” he says.

“I categorically refute that I was involved in any way in spreading these scurrilous rumours.”

Remind me again who was continually insinuating Bill English, Paula Bennett and Steven Joyce were behind the release of Winston Peters’s Super over-payment details…and it was just a matter of time before he (Whale Oil) exposed them?! Whatever happened to the proof for that allegation…other than it helped propel NZ First above 7% at the General Election?

    But having mentioned ‘dirty politics’ this precipitated online accusations from many, including people with close associations with Labour and the Greens, suggesting that ‘dirty politics’ means that National must have been involved – more ‘rumours’ without and evidence. I have also seen some claims that Labour had a plan to link the Gayford rumours to ‘dirty politics’=National, but again, no evidence of this.
    
    Winston Peters deserves a special mention. He has made insinuations without any evidence – as I think is is a common tactic from him. I think this is deplorable dirty opportunism. If he has evidence he should front up (he often doesn’t), otherwise he should act like a deputy prime minister, not a smarmy smearer.
    
    I have seen no indication or evidence that the National Party played any part in starting or spreading the rumours (and I would be very surprised and shocked if they were). Some people linked to National did mention the rumours, but I think that was likely to be because they believed the rumours may be at least partly true so should be publicised rather than being a deliberate campaign to smear…

  There have always been rumours about politicians. What astounds me is that both old and new media were sent threatening letters telling them not to publish the rumours. The thing is, no media old or new has published anything about them for the simple reason that they could not prove that the rumours were true.
  
  Now that the police have taken the extraordinary step of getting involved in something that should have been ignored they still have have zero hard evidence. It is an extremely heavy handed way to handle the situation and has made people who were unaware of the rumours curious about them.
  
  It is Chinese whispers on social media and I am gob smacked that certain people have tried to turn gossip and innuendo on social media into a planned conspiracy.
  
  Remind me again of Whale Oil’s response to Winston Peters actual (not just threatened!) legal action against those who allegedly leaked the details of his Super over-payment…for which we have never, despite Whale Oil’s assurances it existed, ever seen any…proof?!

        A hacker who was hired by blogger Cameron Slater to infiltrate a left-wing blog site has pleaded guilty to fraud in the Manukau District Court.
        
        IT consultant Ben Rachinger, 28, was hired by Mr Slater to hack into left-wing website The Standard, with the aim of embarrassing the Labour Party.
        
        Mr Rachinger was paid $1000 by Mr Slater, but never carried out the hack they discussed. Instead he blew the whistle to TV3’s The Nation, telling the programme he was asked by Mr Slater to figure out who The Standard’s contributors were and record their IP and email addresses.
        
        Police alleged Mr Rachinger never intended to follow through with the promise he made to Slater. He was charged with obtaining $1000 by deception for saying he could and would hack the site.
        
        Mr Rachinger was set to stand trial today but instead changed his plea from not guilty to guilty. He’ll be sentenced on the March 9.
        
        Mr Slater runs the controversial Whale-Oil blog, a right-wing news and opinion site which regularly criticises the Labour Party.
        
        A summary of facts shows Mr Slater believed Labour politicians were writing for The Standard and posting their views anonymously online.
        
        He offered Rachinger $5000 – paying him $1000 up front – believing the hack on The Standard’s servers would uncover evidence of links to Labour.
        
        Labour leader Andrew Little told Newshub earlier this year the party has no links to the left-wing blog.
        
        Mr Slater admitted his part in the plot and was discharged without conviction in May.
        
        Mr Rachinger is also seeking a discharge without conviction, and told Newshub outside court he’s looking forward to the chance to put the matter behind him.

So they think they can build a new hospital in Dunedin for $1.5b ?
They have to buy the required sites, demolish and remove all the existing structures, obtain consents to build again, pay for new traffic management, build the new blocks, fit them out ( this will be very expensive ) , build new WINZ offices with new fitments, and no doubt lots more.
Expect huge budget overruns on this one.

    It is amazing how we have all become experts on obscure US law. My understanding is you probably can subpoena a President. Clinton was subpoenaed in a civil matter ( Paula Jones ) after a court ruling. The current investigation is criminal one and the court would not be likely to see that as a lesser matter than the civil one. This is the leverage Mueller has as Trump could have his lawyers at an interview with the Special Counsel. He would not be represented at a Grand Jury hearing.
    
    The Justice Department has a policy that says a President cant be indicted as guilt or innocence should be up to the people or their representatives to decide.
    
    It amuses me that a Mueller interview is being called a perjury trap. In order to avoid that all Trump would have to do is tell the truth.

He must have told them a lie about what he said to Kislyak when they had his conversations on tape.         It’s already been admitted by the FBI that the notes for the interview (302’s) were changed.
        Other FBI officers present state the notes don’t reflect what was said in the interview- you can do some research to see who did the notes. You might learn something…
        Just today Mueller requested the sentencing be deferred for another two months, so he knows somethings wrong

      I was particularly interested in what the Rabbi said about the biggest problem being the enablers who would attack the messenger to protect the religion and not the kids. Without those people these crimes could not continue. They try and persecute anyone who mentions the abuse in an attempt to silence them.
