    Where is this “money for the Pacific Islands” coming from? Was it provided for in the 2017-18 Government Budget? Don’t think so.
    
    Therefore, the money must be due to be allocated from within the 2018-19 Budget that will be presented to Parliament by Mr Roberson on 17 May, still 8 days away. In due course that Budget will be ratified by Parliament in the absence of any extraordinary intervention.
    
    But to me it is utter arrogance on the part of this Government to pre-empt the due processes of Parliament by publicly announcing a proposed ‘policy’ of the Government as it is was a fait accompli. There is never any “subject to the approval of Parliament” or similar qualification provided. That shows little respect for the constitutional role and powers of Parliament, and treats the institution as a mere show-piece and rubber stamp.
    
    National Governments have been guilty in the past of similar disregard for the role of Parliament. It is timely for all MPs to have an occasional reminder of the source of their power to govern and / or their role to opposition (as the case may be).
    
    One day, a genuine constitutional crisis will arise that involves our Parliament, its role, procedures and rights. Leading protagonists will cry foul because their intentions have been frustrated by ‘arcane procedures’, or by rules of which they were previously ignorant. But they will have only themselves and their own ignorance and contempt to blame for failing to recognise the true source of their powers.

Never in my 66 years on this earth have I ever been so proud to call myself a New Zealander. In a very short six months our brilliant govt has done the following.
Got rid of poverdy.
Homelessness has gone.
Hospitals are fully functional, no new ones required.
All outstanding pay claims have been settled.
Education is at an excellent standard, and free for the first year.
Cheaper doctors visits for all.
Reduced taxes for everyone.

How do I know this?
How else can we afford to give away 3 billion plus to the bludging pacific islands.
We have got a real money spinner here. All other countries will be clambering to get their hands on our brilliant liabour, Winstonfirst, green MP’s to help them achieve this for their own economies.

  Trade[edit]. In 2014 the total value of international trade between New Zealand and Sweden was $NZ 358 million. Of this, $NZ 62 million was exports from New Zealand to Sweden, with the remainder being exports from Sweden to New Zealand.
  So a trade deficit of $296million.
  How will spending money on an embassy enhance NZ?????

    What cost/benefit ratio are you looking at?
    The only really important one is that of MFAT. They regard the benefits as being all the extra money they get, particularly on extra staff and embassies going to nice cities such as Stockholm.
    Call the benefits about $400 million. Aid funds aren’t nearly as good. You have to do some work at dispensing them and you don’t get the money for your own benefit, but the diplomats dishing them out get treated well by people in the receiving countries.
    What are the costs? You wine and dine the drunken dwarf everywhere he goes overseas, which they have been doing for the last 7 months. It is amazing how happy Winnie gets when he is fawned over at a 3 star Michelin Restaurant in Paris where the food for each person costs $1,000 and the wine twice that. Do that every night he is in town and he becomes putty in their hands.
    I estimate the benefits from this expenditure must be at least 1,000 times the costs, and even at that the costs are paid my us mug tax-payers.
    What could something like the health system do for him in comparison? Free nicotine patches for his cigarette habit? A bit more money on his super for heating his Ministerial mansion? Nah.
    The pensioners can go to hell. The don’t really need to go to the doctor anyway and heating their home in winter is an unnecessary luxury. Winston’s entertainment in the fleshpots of the world is what is important and what this Government is going to supply him with.
    So the homeless can keep living in their old cars. We don’t need repairs to the Hospitals. Schools and teachers don’t need support. We don’t need to improve the roads. What are a few hundred deaths on narrow, dangerous state highways.
    The only important thing is.
    KEEP WINSTON IN LUXURY.
    MFAT play the game very, very well.

The Amazon tax seems doomed to failure. Taxes cost between 20 -25 per cent to administer and rarely produce what they promise.
Take this as an example: I purchased an item from the USA at a cost of $29.95US, post free.
It arrived on Monday from China. The declared value/cost was $US5. Yes, $5.
NZ GST – bugger all !

Stuart Nash, – we need to sort out the 5% of dirty farmers. Fair enough. However he went on to say that he knows that Fonterra doesn’t pick up milk from non compliant farmers or “dirty farmers”. So logically those farmers would then go out of business unless they cleaned up their act. what is the problem why punish the good clean farmers who are working hard for New Zealand. Let the commercial work do its job at no cost to the rest of New Zealand. Rivers are cleaning up, water quality is improving and this has happened fairly quickly.

  There is a real steady and constant erosion of our rights and liberties.
  
  And both sides are guilty , but now it’s coming home to roost and you’re hurting , but it was ok to tell the tobaconists to cover up or to plain package , well har har har this is just another attack on private property rights .
  
  So what’s good for tobacco should be good enough for dairy or oil and gas for that matter.

The specter of making Maori “compulsory” in schools has been raised again.

I put the word compulsory in quotes because, while you might be able to force schools to allocate X hours a week to the subject, you cannot force parents and students (let alone tertiary institutions or employers) to care. If Maori was made “compulsory” the classes would be a farce – a large percentage of students (and more importantly their parents) would literally not care if they got 0%. They would not feel the need to pay any attention, study, or do any assigned homework. They would almost certainly disrupt the study of those students who genuinely did want to be there. It would be nothing but an utter waste of time.

Both the Prime Minister and Winston Peters are downplaying the idea, and understandably so. This would be a hugely unpopular move. There are only a fixed number of hours in the school year. Impeding children’s education by wasting time on a pointless subject would not go down at all well with parents.

When I was going to school there was some slow kids, how many now can not read and write. If we were raising scholars, I would say yes to another launage, but why maori.

  The Maori Elders in the 1930’s acknowledged then that their language could not take their children into the future. Throughout the Pacific English and it grammar are taking over.
  
  There is no Maori nation but tribes who arrived at different times from unknown places. They mostly share a common Polynesian heritage including myth. The language is fossilised about 1840 as that of a warrior, hunter gatherer and place dweller. The tribes because of revenge requirements of battle could never become one and musket wars would likely have been their end if they had not appealed to the English Crown to intervene with the Treaty.
  
  Common Maori in use at present is being pidginised and English grammar is used more often than not. The source grammar is substantially different from English so relearning is needed. The basic root word count is primitive. It knows of kumara but not cars. Borrowing is common hence hu and koti or pidginised hus and kotis (shoe and coats); both incorrect as the plural form has no “s” at the end in Maori.
  
  The language is in transition and there are insufficient teachers as well. The cultural language is reserved for Marae use and will not be imparted freely. That is valuable but has to be kept on the Marae and maintained there. No govt can effect its life or death.
  
  It would be waste of resources to attempt to teach the primitive language known as Maori in Schools.

Donald Trump has scuppered the Iran deal. Best news I’ve heard all month. It was a very bad deal.

Obama caved to Iran on just about every point of the deal.
One of the parts let Iran inspect it’s own nuclear facilities.

Iran has admitted that part of the $120 billion payment made to them will be used to sponsor terrorism.

The Institute for Science and International Security reported that Iran was not in full compliance with its JCPOA commitments on Implementation Day.

A New York Times piece written by David Samuels tells how Ben Rhodes, the White House’s deputy national security adviser spun a story for the American public to make the deal more acceptable.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Barack Obama authorized the United States government to pay the government of Iran, a state sponsor of terrorism, to produce nuclear material.

Oh, and the deal wasn’t even signed by Iran.

Without being given another cent those that were in poverty will all of a sudden be above the line.

A few days ago, I saw Stuff claiming that NZ has the highest homelessness in the OECD at 0.94% (according to Wikipedia).

A bit of digging shows why: the “statistical authorities” have expanded the term to include:
*people living in campgrounds/motor camps
*people sharing accomodation with another household

NZ does not distinguish between trailer parks and campgrounds like they do in, say, Canada and USA and many of the people living in campgrounds in NZ are, essentially, living in the equivalent of trailer parks.

USA has an estimated 6% of its population in trailer parks, so that clearly eclipses NZ’s 0.94%

And yes, stephie, this is something I do know a tiny bit about since I actually lived in a campground for 4 months.

  Yes when I arrived in NZ in 1999 I was homeless for the first 7 years. Living on my yacht in Bayswater Marina. I could have sold it and had enough to buy a 3 bed house in Auckland but chose not to. But yes I have been “homeless” I also note there are a 100 or so in the marina who live on board and let their homes out. On surveys technically homeless although they own a home!

    Our two adult kids have returned home for an extended period. We have a large house, they more than pay their way and they are great to have around. Are they classified as being ‘homeless’ because they are ‘sharing accommodation’ and don’t currently own or rent a home? If so there will be many Indian and Chinese amongst the stats due to their culture of accommodating their extended families under the one roof. A culture that I believe we should encourage.

      It’s currently rife in ‘our’ societies. Shades of it yesterday about the father who can’t get paid parental leave to care for three children after his partner died. You’ll note that the government comment about ‘fixing’ his situation was very careful – not ‘We’re going to provide what the man needs’ but ‘We’re making sure he gets his legal entitlements’.
      
      Our currently ‘loving’ government doesn’t give a damn how he or anyone else survives – they just want to cover their arse. And the reality is, society will accept him ‘getting his entitlements’, even if he starves to death – cause that’s how it works in people’s minds and ‘consciences’, such as they are.
      
      That’s why we have the ‘inequalities’ everyone is complaining about and a burgeoning number going to foodbanks, people working for a wage they can’t live on but expected not to commit crime, and a Govt spending $70 million on ‘making children safe’ which will probably make none of them actually ‘safe’ in reality.
      
      Propaganda, what people want to believe, a way to salve their consciences, a desperate need to ‘belong’ to society, to see themselves as ‘good’ by combining against the scapegoats, staving off their sense of utter powerlessness, grateful that they’re not the target. And the ever-present ‘good intentions’ being all that’s required as the end justifying the means – not changed outcomes.

Why is someone with 7% of the vote making decisions for 93% of the population?
Its obvious now that Labour and Ardern are merely a figurehead for Winston Peters, a list MP who couldn’t win his own electorate and currently would be thrown out of Parliament should an election be held today.
These people have subverted democracy using MMP to foist rule and law changes onto NZ without a mandate to do so.
They are destroying primary industry in New Zealand based on dogma and ideology instead of facts or any sort of research into the effects.
FPP may have been a dog of a system, but it beats the hell out of the dead rat governance system we call MMP.
I am disgusted at Labour and the Greens for their complete disdain for the so called morals and policies they once stood for.

I am, as usual, sickened by Labour’s so-called ‘action’ on family violence.

“New Zealand has one the worst rates of family violence in the world. Police are called to an incident about every five minutes – around 110,000 cases a year. That is despite around 80 per cent of cases going unreported.” Hundreds of thousands.

John Tamihere is particularly sickening, maintaining that ‘faceless bureaucrats’ are in some way responsible for people torturing and killing their children.

“… in all the deaths that have been suffered through the failure of the family, the failure of that family’s community to protect that baby, and ultimately the failure of the government agency. But guess who is responsible at the end of the day? Never those that are paid handsomely to oversee an alternative result. Instead, the name of the dead baby and the baby’s family are written in the public arena. The bureaucrats are never known.”

That is exactly the way it should be – unless those bureaucrats have deliberately left a child in an abusive situation – and a majority of social services are now run and/or staffed by Maori. It is their ‘pride’ to preside over abuse by ‘their people’.

There’s only one group of people who are responsible for abuse and death of children – the family – immediate and extended; those who use their drugged, drunken, or just angry fists to abuse/kill them – and those who maintain the abusive systems that allow them to keep doing it, keep it ‘normal’, and prevent them from changing.

They are adults who fail to provide even basically adequate care and often outright abusive care. They are crimes against nature that destroy their own progeny for self-satisfaction and self-gratification.

Ardern is little better.

“Ardern said this morning reducing child poverty was about more than lifting incomes and improving housing and education – it was also about making sure children felt safe in their homes.”

It’s not about making them ‘feel safe’ – it’s about making them ‘safe’.

But children living with abusive parents are not suddenly going to be made ‘safe’ by a government initiative. Neither are children necessarily safe because they’re in refuges. There’s always been more female ‘abusers’ than male, simply because they’re the usual custodial parent. These initiatives imply that children are safe as long as they’re with women – they’re not.

Family violence initiatives are long-term ‘community work’ schemes which rely on teaching people to be ‘better’ parents. They don’t wake up one day miraculously ‘cured’ of their abusiveness because of a government initiative. It takes years – generations – and that’s only if they’re motivated.

The current generation of children are unlikely to ever feel ‘safe’ as their parents slowly ‘learn to be better’ – or not until they’re adults themselves, reproducing the same dynamics in their own families.

In the meantime, they’re left in abusive and lethal homes, maintained by their extended family systems and ‘racist’ politicians with an agenda who have no qualms about the child collateral damage which will be passed on to their own future children. It’s all grist to the Maori political mill which provides profits on all levels.

      I don’t know if you were being ironic, but have you EVER tried to follow ‘Maori’ money, or get anyone to account for it; where it went, who got it, what it was spent on, and by whom?
      
      Maori have perfected the concept of ‘Money Laundering’ to a level far, far beyond anything that the Cayman Islands or the Mafia could come up with.
      
      Within Maori society money (especially ‘Government’ money for a specific cuase / event/ project) becomes ‘invisible’; everyone knows it existed and everyone knows where it went; they just can’t actually tell you who eventually got it (and yes, they will all have genuinely, honestly ‘forgotten’ – although they WILL tell you if they didn’t partake’ personally; but nothing else), And as for a ‘Paper trail’ in the best European accounting tradition? No chance; suddenly things become ‘electronic’ and the ‘paper’ vanishes, and the computer fails and the … etc. etc. etc.
      
      Been there, tried that; it’s worse than herding cats or trying to catch Mercury with a fork; everyone know, but NO-ONE knows.
      
      ‘Transparency’? Not a chance, but if you want to indulge in an exercise of ultimate futility, then the game of ‘Chasing Maori Money’ for accounting purposes has few equals…

    An AUT report:
    
    “By age 17, 23.5 per cent of kids (263,670) had at least one report to child protection services. Almost 10 per cent had been a victim of abuse or neglect and 3 per cent had been put into foster or other care.
    
    Four types of maltreatment were included: neglect (3.8 per cent), emotional abuse (5.3 per cent), physical abuse (3.1 per cent), and sexual abuse (2 per cent).
    
    Half of the substantiated neglect occurred by age 6 years, whereas the medians for emotional abuse, physical abuse, and sexual abuse were 9 years, 11 years, and approximately 13 years respectively.
    Girls were more likely to have reports of concern and be found to be maltreated. The largest difference was for sexual abuse: at 17 years of age 3.2 per cent of girls and 0.8 per cent of boys had experienced sexual abuse.
    
    The report concluded that notifications and substantiated child maltreatment were more common in New Zealand than is generally recognised.”

  Criminals, especially drugged up, need very clear messages. They don’t get that when people pat them on the head and tell them it isn’t their fault they beat up their kids but that they are all victims of colonialism etc etc.

  @Anne… Bill English had a proposal to put one to one (WINZ/CYPS/Whanau Ora or what ever it was) counsellors to work with families deemed at risk due to rubbish lifestyle.
  Considering the children mainly I guess.
  Now there is a real postive try at helping. Who would want to do it though. Very tough job.
  Anyway, National got parked up and JA has chosen not to offer that same programme.

        What can you say about a group of people who believe they’re being ’empowered’ to be ‘equal’ by being flooded with hormones/drugs which prevent their bodies behaving normally and damage them longterm, fight for the RIGHT to kill their own progeny in the womb, fight for the legislated RIGHT to be used and abused as prostitutes, and protect all bullies/abusers – from individual family members to sex traffickers – whether in their homes, the workplace, political rallies, or in government – for the usual power, position, and money. They’ll sell anyone out – lie, cheat, steal, whatever they feel the need to do at the time for personal gain/advantage – all the while saying they’re ‘helping’.
        
        And they call this ‘sisterhood’. There’s lots of talk about men ‘sticking together’ and ‘old boys clubs’ etc. – you can’t accuse women of that. They’re more dangerous to other women than men have ever been to them.

I see Jacinda has probably made one kiwibloger happy with her normal way of fixing these long painful stories on Poverty and now Domestic Violence and that is to chuck $70 Million at the problem to pay more in the social counseling network to fix the problem. How can you fix a problem when the victims keep going back for more, having more children that further complicates the issue and then plays the blame game by suggesting the Government doesn’t do enough to help them.

    We do agree on some things but it doesn’t mater whether the perpetrator is male or female some one has to take responsibility for their actions and the Government should not be just throwing millions at new counseling services to fix the problem as the same problems keeps happening.       Counselling services are a waste of money for perpetrators of violence. ..the only thing that works is the long arm of the law.
      Counselling for victims of violence is usually useless too, because all they do mostly is tell them to leave/pray/keep a pillow handy and other b/s.
      What they should be doing is empowering victims to assert their rights before the situation escalates.
      The bottom line is violence is a crime and the police need to intervene to stop it.
      And you don’t need to wait until you get assaulted.
      “Disturbing the peace” is against the law too!

    Could it have been that the police got disillusioned with answering domestic violence call-outs where 9 times out of 10 the woman concerned would not make a statement and said it was all OK now?
    That was then, this is now and women should step up, report violence to themselves and their children and stick with it. Not cave in and withdraw the information because they are scared to be left on their own – any partner being better then no partner.

      It should never have been UP to the woman to make a complaint….and fortunately no longer is.
      It is the state’s job to protect its citizens, especially in the home.
      It doesn’t matter what a person’s reasons are for staying in a relationship, violence is a crime and it is up to society to address it, just like any other crime.
      BTW, I had a lovely uncle whose wife beat him up constantly.
      He knew he had no hope back then of getting the police to help and didn’t want to leave his wife and kid.
      In the end he had to force himself to use his superior physical strength to turn the tables.
      Most women don’t have this option, and shouldn’t have to anyway.

    Maori language and culture have been increasingly introduced into all schools by the stealth of the predominantly-Leftist school teachers.
    
    But the push is now for it to be made compulsory: that would lead to blocking formal qualifications unless you have passed examinations proving you can speak Maori.
    
    Perhaps it’s time to take a stand against this push to enforce a minority tongue on all of us, and in the process create tens of thousands of jobs for specialist Maori teachers, Maori sign painters, Maori editors, Maori-speaking X and Maori-speaking Y.
    
    The cost? well only a few billion a year.
    
    When we have National led by a Maori MP and his Maori deputy, who is going to make a stand?
    
    Don’t underestimate this drive. One of its leaders is Wily Willie Jackson, who succeeded in a Maori takeover of State radio — under the eyes of a National-led coalition.

      If Maori is an official language in New Zealand , which de jure , it is, then it must be taught in school and to get any job in the public service one must be fluent in Maori written and spoken.And every street sign , every gubmint publication be it central or local should be in Maori and English etc etc
      
      As Maori is de facto not an official language in the sense that no fucker can speak it or read , and no fucker even wants to , then it should be binned as an official de jure language.

        If National wants to get back into power it will need a coalition partner,and sadly ACT is unlikely ever to be sufficient. I’m not saying co-opt NZ First, but at least be intelligent enough to look at those of its policies that are valid and popular. But in light rail? Public transport systems can be profitable, as in densely populated Hong Kong, where more than 90 per cent of the people use them.

But in Auckland? It’s unlikely it will break even. Putting national savings into them is criminal. Another hijack of national assets by the third or so of New Zealanders who live in Auckland, and vandalism of national savings.

The Leftist-leaning media are going along with PR graduate Jacinderella’s spin. The Super Fund “wants” to own two Auckland light rail projects? Wants to? C’mon ….

I recall reading a while back about how the amount of freight movement can be a good barometer of the level of economic activity. I wonder if something else I’ve noted recently points to how the CoL are being seen as wreckers of our economy.

Trade Me seems to have a noticeable increase in adverts where the seller is “moving overseas” or “leaving for Australia next week”.

Maybe it’s seasonal but it could be better read as the more intelligent rats deserting the sinking ship.

China want a foothold in the area and are willing to pay for it. The PI’s will sell their souls to whomever will provide the most and that is China.
