  Wowsers from Otago University (Government funded of course) have been pushing for a massive tax hike on alcohol for some time.
  One woman was on TV recently pontificating that she thinks the price should be doubled!

  Funny you should say that. I just posted on the fuel price piece that exactly 60 years ago in 1958 Arnold Nordmeyer the Fin Min in the Labour government bought down the so called Black Budget with big increases in beer and baccy levies.
  
  The result. The one term 57/60 government were thrown out and replaced by Keith Holyoakes Nats who went on to rule until 1972 when Big Norm Kirks Labour replaced them
  
  By my calcs we will see the COL tossed in 2020 and a Nat or Nat lead government rule until 2032.
  
  I wonder if the Labour historians have contemplated the interesting comparisons.

      Actually as glacier melt increases it reduces the salinity of the sea which increases the freezing point of the sea which results in more sea ice. This increases albedo of the region (less dark water and more white ice) which reduces the temperature – so less glacial melt and increases salinity of water, a nice negative feedback loop that looks to return to equilibrium. Climate Change however is a greater forcing than that feedback loop – on average and over time we are loosing more land ice and warmer temperatures on average are resulting in less sea ice and more dark water, reducing albedo and increasing the warming of an area – a positive feedback loop.

    There’s more to air pollution than just freaking out about CO2. Smog and air pollution in Bejing does need cleaning up, but that can be addressed without worrying about CO2.
    
    The constant worry over CO2 is sidelining really important environmental issues.
    
    Every dollar spent on CO2 is one dollar we can’t spend on stuff that really matters.

WHERE will they be planted?
WHEN will they be planted? (over what time frame)
WHO will be doing the planting?
Will 100million be planted this year and next year to keep up the promise of 1 billion in 1oyrs?

    MPI is running a tree counter. It reports 60 mill trees planted, 67 mill seedlings sold and 6.5 mill seedlings provided through government funding.
    
    So pretty much the private sector doing what they always do then. Who would guess that from the announcements being made?

At least in Australia last night there was considerable pushback .

    Sea level has oscillated throughout Holocene by 2-3m over 1000 year periods for unknown reasons. Current sea level rise of ~2mm/year (roughly constant since end of little ice age) is normal, and with only ~1mm/year from ice melt is of no real concern.
    
    Higher latitude temperatures have varied by as much as 6°C during the Holocene. We can find driftwood under now permanent ice in the Arctic – there is more ice there now than a few 1000 years back. There is smaller temperature variations at lower latitudes (tropical temperatures clamped to a narrow range by sea water evaporation). Current temp rise, coming off coldest period of last 8000 years (little ice age that ending in 19th century) is nothing to write home about.
    
    Argo buoys only recording 0.3°C temp rise per century in upper 2000m of ocean. Ultimately limiting air temperature rise rate. Current air temp rise rate is about 1.2-1.3°C per century, taken over last 40 years (global satellite record).
    
    This is not the apocalypse we were promised, data contradicts more and more catastrophist claims and IPCC is getting desperate to keep the party going.

If DPF has the time and staff I would love to see him or a colleague do seven minute face to face interviews with National MPs and other people of influence from the right. Nothing flash. Just a sit down interview where we can hear all the facts. The right need to become louder about the sense of fair play and rights of the individual which are quickly being eroded away. Her Government are getting $1.18 Cents a Litre tax. Oil companies get 20c a Litre after paying for the oil import. Out of the 20c that is to pay running costs wages etc. etc.
Most of the punitive regional tax increases are to pay for the bribes they they offered for votes at the last election,with more to come.
As for NZs being “fleeced” by the oil companies,think Commie Chic Comrade Ardern in the mold of Lenin should tell the truth, if that is possible.The only ones who are being” fleeced” are NZs voters by Ardern and her gang as they attempt to pull the wool over our eyes,treating us all like a flock of sheep. Well we have a cry baby article from Clare Curren about all the nasty comments on social media and even going to the extent of trying to make out National were slapping each other on the back in triumph over her sacking. Clare said she had sympathy and support from her Labour, NZ First and the Greens but not National as they were to busy slapping each other on the back in victory to worry about her. This coming from someone that visited the Mansion of the fat Kraut and went all out to try and bring John Key down when she and Labour were in opposition now finds it abhorrent for the opposition to apply pressure and eventually cause the sacking of a MP that misled Parliament and the NZ Public on several occasions, NZ needs honest MP’s that are intelligent and capable of being a Minister not people like Clare that thought she was above all that and could twist the system to achieve her narritive.

So Air NZ is out of pocket by $20k because of allegedly not handling a case of a ‘problem’ pilot properly. Strongly seems the pilot is no longer employed. I think $20k was cheap at the price – given the background of the case I would would not want the guy flying a plane I was travelling in and indeed Air NZ would have shirked its responsibilities to customers, shareholders and insurers by keeping him on. Seems the issue was Air NZ did not ‘wet nurse’ him out of his problems (failed simulator tests among other things) – whether that would have helped goodness knows.
If a pilot ‘crashes’ a plane on a simulator then all things equal he could well crash the plane in real life under similar circumstances. OK if he was set a task with a distinct likelihood of a ‘crash’ (eg something far more serious than 1/2 failed engine), then a ‘crash’ would be acceptable. But this did not seem to be the case.

So I checked CNN last night for a giggle and the female host said all the women she talked to over the weekend were really angry about Republicans putting Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court and were going to vent their frustration at the ballot box. I was sitting there thinking, the poor guy had no credible evidence against him and still he was being smeared. I bet those “women she talked to” were already hardcore leftists.

The other one the left rolled out in the US over the weekend was anyone that didn’t believe Dr Ford or Julie Swetnick etc was “a denier.” Oh so original I haven’t heard that one before.

Sure, they have an actual Chinese espionage guy in their caucus, and plenty of current and former senior ministers are openly in the pocket of Chinese firms. But this is just standard for our political parties.   Interestingly, my bank’s estimate of the value is about $100,000 more than Homes.co.nz, and is adjusted weekly. Now either my bank has no idea about valuations ( which could be a problem for THEM if I default), or somehow the methodologies used are slightly different. My bank’s estimation is in line with the new CVs. However, since the housing shortage is going to be exacerbated shortly when SLG fucks the rental market over, prices are probably going to rise steeply once again.

From the BBC (thought they were a news agency)
car, use 129g of CO2/Km on a single person trip
bus, use 101g of CO2/Km on a single person trip
bicycle, use 0g of CO2/Km on a single person trip
to spite the obvious apples/oranges comparison
ie the number of times cars travel with more than one person in and the number of times buses run empty.
0g /Km for bikes? So the rider doesn’t breath in and out while cycling?

There are benefits to driving in a car that shouldn’t be forgotten when making comparisons. Emitting a bit of CO2 is better than getting run over. Well, I think that’s still true.

I’m sure someone has told her the number but she doesn’t actually fucking know what it means to go from, say, $80 a week to $40 spare a week because she’s a stupid fucking middle class bourgeois.
God i like the rich much more these days at least when they offer you hardship you get to keep what you earn.

I have been on Deaker’s case for many years. I think he’s responsible more than anyone else for the abject state of sports, especially rugby, commentary in this country. His behaviour after the 1999 RWC final was not only a disgrace, it was treacherous and hateful, and most of all, ignorant. Deaker is, thankfully, not heard or seen much these days but a generation ago he was all over the media. I haven’t wasted much time recently thinking about the horror of his notorious radio show or his cretinous television performances, but I welcome the opportunity to rehash some of what I’ve written about him over the years. I will put some of these items up here, and in extended form on my blog, in the next few days.   That’s where you’re wrong sleazebag – the absolutely democratic report function is being used entirely correctly and appropriately in highlighting to DPF posts that readers believe are beyond the pale. It is then up to DPF to assess them and publish them if he wishes to.

  They will need it. Big 2nd quarter NZD drop will send inflation shooting up in 3rd quarter (out next week) due to expensive imports. Combined with reduced discretionary spending it will kill growth and drop NZD and business confidence and spending still further. The excrement is about to hit the air mover.

  Labour were always going on about National cooking the books to get out of surplus and now find it ok to massage the figure by making the Housing Corporation borrow over two billion to forfil some of the housing problems without it affecting the budget figures so how do we know that their has not been other borrowing hidden from these figures.

  Most of Labours big spend-ups (eg, the Families Package) didn’t kick in until 1 July so are not included in this reporting period.
  Essentially this surplus is on the back of Nationals prudent economic management and the cancellation of their planned tax cuts.

    What has been left unsaid about this ‘surplus’? There has been a very strange reaction from the markets with the NZD down against all of the major currencies and the NZSX having another bad day and about to slip back under 9ooo. A massive and unexpected surplus should have seen the NZD strengthen significantly and the NZSX a positive day. Do the international markets know stuff that we don’t?

      The ANZ Truckometer indexes both fell in September. The Heavy Traffic Index fell -2.6% m/m to be up just +0.4% in the September quarter. The Light Traffic Index fell -0.7% m/m (+1% q/q). ANZ commented: “We now have complete data for Q3. The monthly fall in the Heavy Traffic Index means the Truckometer is now suggesting the risks around GDP growth in the quarter are skewed towards a weaker outturn.”

  But Fletch we do appreciate the irony as sweet cheeks is trying to claim credit for figures to the end of the year to June and the end of the good times. While at the same time the silly little girl is trying to blame oil companies for being greedy to cover up their tax gouging pushing fuel prices up. Carefully avoiding that their actions also caused the NZ$ to slide. Unfortunately for sweet cheeks it is already impacting negatively in the Balance of Payments starting month on month SINCE June.
  Also since June there has been some Cullen like creative borrowing being done again as before when they also supposedly recorded frequent surpluses. Completely overlooking that the Kiwi has lost $0.06 since the point up to which the last of the good times ended with these figures. We will not speculate on why it has taken so long for this wonderful news to be released since we understand how long it takes to “assemble” such a vast array of details. We can however expect to hear at least one patsy question next week on “what reports have been received” for the script to get another airing.

      The other way you can signal you think a comment is unacceptable, is to click on the link which says “Report Abusive Comment”. If a certain threshold is reached of people reporting it, then the system will automatically hide the comment from view, and place it into moderation for a moderator to review.
      
      Your posts stay hidden because the moderators have concluded that they breech the comments policy.

Hmm. The big homeless count came up with 336 people living on the street or in cars. Multiply by 2.5 because they’re guessing to round it to 800 or so. Then include 2900 people who aren’t actually living on the street, and we’re up to 3600 or so. A bit odd, but I’m with them so far. At least they told us where the numbers come from. What isn’t so clear is how they get from 3600 homeless to ~26000 homeless. Where do the other 22000 come from?

    NZ Statistics have a definition they use, summary as follows.
    
    Homelessness is defined as living situations where people with no other options to acquire safe and secure housing: are without shelter, in temporary accommodation, sharing accommodation with a household or living in uninhabitable housing.
    
    There’s a 15 page expanded version on their website. I understand it is a different definition to that used in other countries so panic about 40,000 homeless is not necessarily warranted.
    
    Not clear to me at least if adult offspring living n the basement count as homeless, but may do since a family bunking up with another household will count.

Regards fuel prices
Ardern forget to mention the fact the the dollar has dropped under Labour which increases the cost of imported fuel a lot. And that petrol companies also had to pay their staff more due to the wage rises in April.
