      Events are rolling out fast. They aint covered by MSM because they are too useless to ask follow ups on why Trump would say that about Iran.

        But we are — we’re doing really well. And the Iran deal, I have to be honest, I did it because nuclear is always number one to me. Nuclear is number one.
        
        But on the Iran deal, I think Iran is a different country now than it was three or four months ago. I dont think they’re looking so much to the Mediterranean. I dont think they’re looking so much at Syria, like they were, with total confidence. I dont think they’re so confident right now.
        
        But I hope — with that being said, I hope that, at the appropriate time, after these sanctions kick in — and they are brutal, what we’ve put on Iran — I hope that they’re going to come back and negotiate a real deal, because I’d love to be able to do that. But right now, it’s too soon for that.

        In the Hollowmen he called Friederich Hayek a conservative, though Hayek had actually written a widely circulated piece, “Why I am Not a Conservative.” Hager said Julian Robertson was a foreign take over of the National party, forgetting Robertson actually immigrated to NZ in the late 1970s because he liked the place and owns numerous properties in NZ. Hager was obsessed with the Exclusive Brethren, who should be allowed to campaign for whatever they want. Hager paid zero attention to the shenanigans of Labour, particularly the ‘Pledge Card’ and Winston’s massive overspending, or his denial of Owen Glenn’s money. Hager missed all that. And no commented that they changed the law by legislation to cover it up. And this was just a few. Hager is okay with hacking National because he is a Marxist but if nz security officials monitors these hackers he his panties in a twist. Judith Collins was completely cleared of Hager’s allegations. The U-turn is political.

    The facts remain that Police broke the law. Nicky Hagar was treated appalingly, and we’ve ended up having to pay up as taxpayers because our former PM and Police Minister leaned on the Police to do so. If Police management weren’t such gutless liars about it all there would be some comeback on those who demanded this action. Downvote me and throw your petty slurs in about Hager all you like but it does not change the fact that the Police broke the law, and have had to apologise publicly and pay up a lot of money.       The Police actions should be tested in Court. What is the difference between receiving and Hager’s actions.
      
      The Police have only been reported as doing their usual on a raid. They are intimidating, they do pull things apart, they do look in strange places, they can make a person feel like a criminal. That’s their job. Often they wake people up before daybreak to start a search.
      
      Hager has no more rights than any other citizen and has brought the nuisance on himself.
      
      The “settlement” feels like a Hager benevolent fund payment.

  Hager shouldn’t have accepted property he was not lawfully entitled to. His source had no rights to it so Hager can have none either. In another context that is called receiving stolen property.
  
  How can Hager be damaged by legitimate Police inquiries? He chose to accept property he had no legal right to.

      It took a long time for Grantham and Kelly to get their man where they wanted him, and the appeal decision is supposedly seen as part of the great undress. Helen Winkelmann j is highly intelligent and concluded quickly Lundy had nothing to do with this crime. Beside her are two jaded white male amateurs. How they are all dealing with the inevitable fallout is anybody’s guess, but I imagine more stories might flow this weekend.

      I’d heard (unverifiable of course) that an uncalibrated speed camera had caught Lundy’s car on the night in question. Obviously inadmissable as evidence due to the camera not being officially operable but would explain the Police’s keenness to prosecute. Has anyone else heard that rumour? Or have I been lied to (wouldn’t be the first time).

        The car never left Petone. Jonathan Eaton proved there was a 30 liter petrol deficit if 3 trips rather than one had been made. There has been a litany of lies by the authorities for 2 decades to keep him in jail, but where they start is not always known. By definition the police are prolific liars in cases like this. Think of Hutton in Thomas, Hughes in Tamihere, others in Bain, and so on.

    Actually, I can see a valid argument that it isn’t emotional as such, it’s more a money issue, if they don’t oppose them the Teacher’s Unions get upset and probably won’t send money to the party, and it needs that money badly.
    
    And for the Unions charter schools are an anathema without a logical basis no matter how much they try to dress it up, or lie about statistical outcomes.
    
    Me, I think charter schools work very well for some, but not necessarily for all. As such, to me they have a deserved place in the overall educational landscape, helping those who simply cannot be helped by the standard centrally driven model. Teachers unions though want only the standard model because it gives them personal and political power. That such a model may impact detrimentally on some children is a complete irrelevancy for the union as they don’t and never have had any concern for the children in the system except in so far as they provide an emotional appeal to add weight to their personal quest for power and influence.

The WH produced a video that was shown to Kim during the talks. This shows Trump and his team are willing to try different, unconventional things to try to get a result.

      Yes we will have to wait and see. China will continue to use NK as a cats-paw to irritate US. Maybe Kim is scared of China’s hegemonic ambitions (South China sea etc) and hopes to re-align, or maybe more of same old games. Trump is less predictable for Kim, so maybe that impacts developments of ‘deals’

      For a change ztev isn’t all wrong. I’m quite impressed with what has happened so far but a lot remains to happen before we can call this any sort of success beyond a minor diplomatic coup.
      
      What is interesting to me is that Kim himself has tied his personal reputation around this. It may or may not be important but it is different, and must surely represent a form of risk for him. Trump is in many ways unconventional, I imagine that if things don’t go forward in general terms he will quite rapidly drop the carrot and revert to the stick again.
      
      Be interesting to know just how much leeway Kim actually haves and how much China is dictating to him. In geopolitical terms China probably doesn’t want a strong, confident and united Korea on thei border so may make sure that any real movement gets stymied, but maybe, just Maybe, Kim sees an opportunity to play the US off against China and gain some flexibility. Maybe he can see that he needs a more developed and wealthy country to be able to assert himself.
      
      All in all, everyone is speculating as we don’t really know the full story. But cautious optimism is allowable. If Trump does Pull this off, he should get full credit. If not, well, it’s no worse than anyone else managed.

    China was all buttoned up before Nixon visited it and was even more closed in the 19th century. Japan likewise. Myanmar is not much different now.

Optimistic followers of international affairs see it as the most significant first step arranged in a very short time which in itself confirmed the willingness of both parties to initiate the process.

Most of the MSM are sucking back their bile at the success of the meeting. One even commented that “there has not been any concrete outcomes from the meeting as yet”.   What was interesting was the number of times he started by repeating “on behalf of the PM”. This is totally unnecessary (esp after the first answer) so is likely his way of distancing himself from the PMs position.
  
  One answer that made me chuckle was when asked (as a Q to the PM) about a meeting that the deputy PM had, he responded “I don’t know I wasn’t there”. Which is true for the PM on whose behalf he was replying, but sounded so weird.
  
  These next 6 weeks are going to be most interesting in my opinion.

  Funny how people see things from a different perspective. I saw Peters playing with Bridges like a mouse with a cat. He was getting nowhere and ended up getting nothing out of all those questions. A waste of supplementaries to keep asking the same thing again and again. Strange to me why Mallard didn’t suggest to him that he was wasting his time and that the questions were asked and answered. Still, it’s Bridges call on how they ask the questions. I thought Peters came out of it the better though.   Right niggly but trouble of another kind is coming as the Speaker yesterday eluded to “changes” he intends to introduce to OQT. This will surely be a new primary means to provide more protection for the COL by dictating how question are to be formed and presented. While at the same time he has dispensed with his earlier instructions to the COL to answer questions instead of making protracted policy speeches.
  After the old drunks performance yesterday and knowing he is chasing more exposure it is time to neglect him completely to emphasise his limited power in the COL. Targeting the Ministers where targets abound to show up policy/performance weaknesses will better serve the opposition as under pressure so many struggle. This then would leave the old drunk only a supplementary option to take part where he has consistently made a fool of himself with his failed humour. Sure there is always a patsie question option but he can stuff those up too with probing supplementary questions for detail. The fun has started.

It is largely irrelevant what commentators expoused on RNZ this morning because Trump achieved what many leaders should aspire to in that he has initiated a peace treaty without firing a shot or using brute military force.
Further to that commentators who expect a comprehensive agreement to be achieved in the initial meeting are simply demonstrating their naivety, this takes time and is dependent on the goodwill of Kim Jong un and his desire to pursue a lasting peace.

    My understanding (during the dotard-rocketman saga) was that the US wanted NK to completely disarm (nukes and other missiles) after which (when completely defenseless) they’d think about removing sanctions. More likely would be an invasion, killing of Kim, and destruction of NK as that’s what’s happened to most countries marked out as evil (Iran they’re still working on, the Russkies spoilt their Syria game). What he got was “complete denuclearisation” which includes the US. So he’s backed down and Kim’s position remains. Excellent winning (even if I’m not sure we have the same definition of winning).

      Sadly CL it is alright when the left do it but they missed the point completely because his emphasis was on the waste of money. There will be far more pressing needs for the many ways the USA can stimulate the NK economy thus it can be seen as being redirected to much better use.
      Nobody expects NK to change overnight in any radical way but we can be sure that in their time together Donald Trump would have talked fast tracking internal economic recovery. With 25.6 million people ready and waiting to be producers and consumers. The jewel in the crown might be tourism where so much foreign money is right on their doorstep with so many wealthy neighbours. It is all a matter of timing and he said they are far enough out to be considered more from the point of being a cost saving for the USA than a bargaining chip. They struggled to grasp the most significant point that nothing that was in place before the meeting had been changed by this initial face to face. It was a starting point for what may be some extensive discussions and negotiations to be undertaken by the team below Presidential level. The also seemed to overlook what Pompeo achieved in the lead up to this momentous moment in history. Unfortunately for the MSM he is a doer and not so much a talker and we can bet the farm he has a game plan ready to swing into play to keep the momentous up.

  Funny watching Fox News post the meeting where they had a balanced panel that included a beady eyed blond Democrat spouting her scepticism. Her biggest beef though was the number of unfilled positions in the State Department that should be handling this issue. It is the result of continual blocking tactics by the Dems that have delayed so many appointments. The news anchor repeatedly tried to get her to acknowledge that the meeting was progress but she kept ducking it with further irony in faithfulness to their hypocritical MO.

Black Africans never went that far South because their crops would not grow. Black Africans have only really been arriving in Cape Town in the last 50 or so years – well after whites.

Cape Town is the last non-Black African city in Africa. When the 1.2 million or so Cape Coloureds get taken over/wiped out by the Black Africans (as is almost inevitable), Africa will finally be African from end to end.

        But that is bullshit. That might have helped a small amount, but they were still using far more than the targets to make it through.

      It did happen. They ran out but the problem was sidestepped by using other peoples’ water.
      
      The crappy socialist government ran out of water, but they’re claiming a win that they did not run out.
      
      Farmers, who had been putting in dams at their own cost to take care of agricultural needs did not run out of water. They then gave up their water to bail out the government and city dwellers. Those farms are now destroyed and the jobs gone. When fruit trees etc die it takes a good 7-10 years to get them productive again.
      
      If they had not freely handed the water over then they would have had it nationalised.
      
      THe government did not learn from this. Next time they run out there won’t be farmers to screw over.
      
      Responsible people got screwed over by irresponsible people. Who would have thought?
      
      This could easily happen to socialist mismanagement here too. What’s going to happen if the state runs out of money? First port of call will be to nationalise all the KiwiSaver accounts. Responsible savers getting screwed over again.

    and might I add the chances of a c section delivery are higher the older the mother is.

  I was in Thailand at the time of the last World Cup, which occurred shortly after the military staged a coup.
  Football is popular in the Kingdom and to placate the masses the the Junta coughed up the money to put all the games on the free to air channels.
  One of the reasons the military had given to stage the coup was to stamp out populism. That didn’t last long.

  Maggy, there is a book called “Einstein the Incorrigible Plagiarist” and after skimming through I was suspicious of him, no big name is as ever as perfect as they’re portrayed (Newton was flawed, Darwin was, H. Ford was, Lincoln oversaw +700,000 deaths etc). At the same time (15 years ago) I read it I told my grad school Finance Professor (a visiting Prof married to another Prof) who researches famous historical figures and they worked out that after his marriage fell apart all Einstein’s genius vanished. They hypothesized that Mileva, a scientist herself, was a significant collaborator in his discoveries, hence the massive divorce settlement for her silence. Then Richard Feynman gives an account of a doctoral or a research speech that he gave at Princeton (late 1930s), and all the big names turned up and after the student finished it was traditional for all the old luminaries to ask questions and one physicist asked something and then some old chap (probably Jewish with a German name that had never heard before) started to explain how such & such was possible if such & such happened. Then out blurted Einstein something that was contentious, everything went off topic & argumentative. Feynman said that the old guy was onto something that evening, but he never got to postulate it, and later it would have potentially solved things riddling physicists in the 1970s-1980s. Most people I had read always thought the likes of Claude Shannon and John von Neumann were smarter. The other thing about Einstein was he was hounded out of Germany in the early 1930s by national socialists, yet in the late 1940s he was advocating socialism. After all those deaths.

The High Court of Australia hands down a significant decision regarding internet defamation:

A man who claims to be defamed by Google has now been given the green light to sue the search engine by the High Court.

Milorad Trkulja was shot in the back by an unknown gunman in Melbourne in 2004, at the time of a series of underworld killings. He wants to sue Google for defamation after discovering that searches for his name brought up images of mob figures due to the shooting coinciding with gangland activity in the city.

The case raises isn’t limited to images in Google search results:

[Mr Trkulja has alleged] that defamatory text, autocomplete predictions and images showed him alongside convicted felons when searching phrases such as “Melbourne underworld criminals”. Autocomplete predictions are the suggestions that appear under the searcher’s text before they have finished typing.

This will be an interesting case to follow. For those who are interested, the High Court judgment is here.
