  That is Brian Fallow in the Herald today – Who said tax was meant to be fair? He does make some good points though.
  
  The Government has given the Tax Working Group chaired by Sir Michael Cullen a well-nigh impossible task. Its terms of reference are peppered with the word “fair”. It occurs seven times. How can the tax system be made “fair, balanced and efficient”?But the terms of reference go on to rule out all the obvious ways of making it fairer.
  
  Tunnel vision then, minds made up. Surprised?
  
  Can’t help but be reminded of Thomas Sowell – “Since this is an era when many people are concerned about ‘fairness’ and ‘social justice,’ what is your ‘fair share’ of what someone else has worked for?”

    A good piece by Matthew Hooten indeed.
    
    The only thing that let his article down was his comparison of Jacinda’s actions to that of Murray McCully – the two do not remotely compare (McCully’s actions were small change in the scheme of things, although not well executed arguably had good intentions which was to free up trade and it didn’t cost anyone’s job nor wrecked a province and the national economy at the end of the day), as it gives the retarded Left a “way out” (eg “wah wa, see National did it too etc”)! Plus also Hooten gave Ardern too much credit near the end (“The one saving grace is Ardern’s reassurance this is not how other decisions will be made”), I wouldn’t put it past the vacuous Ardern to keep making absurd Captain Calls again, as she demonstrates logic does not come into her thinking, as she struts the world stage enhancing her own vanity.
    
    Anyway excellent analysis on the whole and I’d like to know if Hooten thinks perhaps another reason why NZF sided with this treasonous action is because that was the trade-off to ensure the Greens support NZF’s waka jumping bill? I guess if the Greens end up supporting the bill (despite many within the Green movement opposing it) then that perhaps does suggest some tie-in?
    
    After all what else would make NZF support screwing over thousands of NZ’ers and tanking the economy (O&G ban) and what else will make the Greens support such a draconian bill (if indeed they do end up supporting the waka jumping bill)?
    
    The other scary thing is, what else is there to come from the COL?

        Hardly sooty the brat will be in the same category as the 122 committees and inquiries and clipped onto the shield of hypocrisy to counter criticism of the SLG. So funny they thought March was a tough month but has extended to June and in her absence might run right through the winter of discontent. Especially when senior citizens can only “think” warm and fuzzy thoughts because the COL can’t pay the heating allowance yet. Remember a smile exercises more muscles that a frown so at least they will have a warm face.

Then turns into more of the same from him as his true colours are revealed.   Brian Fallow’s no communist. He’s an intelligent, highly educated journo. In and Out’s comment about him being a “former” economics editor, is also misguided. Fallow came from the pre-tabloid days of the Hooerald, when it was a real newspaper.
  
  Hooten, the real deal? Hooten is Red Radio’s designated spokesman for the Right. He’s a PR/lobbyist, and is often well off target.
  
  Fallow makes some interesting points in the article. It’s time NZ started experimenting with tax types. We’re a small, very easily changed country, so we should improve the tax system where we can.
  
  We don’t need more tax, but we need to raise it in ways that help resources go into productive enterprises, rather than into housing bubbles.

Oh dear. Poor old ztev will be inconsolable today, now that it has been revealed that his Labour heroes have clay feet:

Finance Minister Grant Robertson gave a post-Budget speech at a $600-a-head Labour fundraiser at the exclusive Wellington Club, drawing comparisons to the previous National Government’s “Cabinet club” scandal.

According to several attendees, about 40 people, including party supporters, business figures and corporate lobbyists, attended the dinner hosted by Labour president Nigel Haworth on Wednesday, at which Robertson was the key attraction.

A similar dinner is due to be hosted at the even more exclusive Northern Club in Auckland on Thursday night.

A spokeswoman for Robertson refused to make any comment, describing the dinner as “a party matter”.

The Prime Minister, who is charged with ensuring Cabinet rules are being adhered to, has also refused to comment.

At the Wellington Club dinner, Robertson spoke about May’s Budget and future Budgets. He also signalled policy announcements set to be announced in the coming weeks, one person who attended claimed.

Another person at the dinner described Robertson as “extremely on message”. After his speech, Robertson went table to table for more private conversations with small groups.

Haworth said, as Labour president, it was his right to invite any party member to a dinner.

The dinners were part of a series of events Labour ran and $600 was the standard price, he said.

He refused to reveal how much profit the party made from the event, saying “that’s for us to know”.

Haworth said Robertson should not be speaking about party matters, given he was there as an MP, not finance minister.

“He was there, invited by me, as a senior member of the party.”

Shortly after the story was published, an invitee supplied Stuff with a copy of the invitation sent out by Haworth, which suggested Robertson was at the event as finance minister.

“You are cordially invited to join me at a private post-Budget dinner with the Finance Minister, Hon Grant Robertson MP.”

Earlier, he insisted that Robertson’s speech was “about the economy, much more generally” rather than the Budget, before adding that “of course the Budget came into it”.

Wednesday’s Wellington Club dinner was the first of its type since the election, Haworth said.

    Whether or not the National Party has done anything illegal with its Cabinet Club/s fundraisers, there are wider issues about values, who the National government represents, and how they insert themselves within networks of influence. A major part of the opposition and media focus has been that of people with a lot of money buying political influence, as posted on by NRT.
    
    Now we find that the Labour Party thinks it’s fine to “insert” Grant Robertson into “networks of influence”, charging him out at $600 a seat. Presumably there weren’t too many beneficiaries, people from the “squeezed middle” or union members at the dinner, given that $600 is not an inconsiderable sum of dosh.
    
    And Nigel Haworth has made an absolute dick of himself, trying to justify inviting people to hear the Finance Minister, Hon Grant Robertson MP, rather than the MP for Wellington Central. Even hardcore Labour supporters on Twitter are struggling with Haworth using the “two hats” defence, one saying “had enough of that ‘which hat’ bullshit with the last crew #grrr”
    
    Let’s face it ztev; Labour has been busted as being hypocritical. Unleash all the squirrels at your disposal, but nothing can change the FACT that Labour has enough egg on its face (and its hats) this morning to make several omelettes.

    Didn’t give a rat’s arse when National did it either, but the opposition were apoplectic and the hysteria went on for days – aided of course by our media as there were no cats up trees at the time.
    
    Now that Robertson and Labour have breached the cabinet manual, how could you not expect a dose of the same medicine?
    
    Telling though that the Nats were clearing $2k a head and Robertson is only worth $600.

  I have no problem with Robertson doing this. Parties are entitled to raise funds by inviting people to hear speakers. The idea that he can only attend in his capacity as an MP is just silly. Everyone knows he is the finance minister. Is it fair that people will pay more to hear a government minister than an opposition spokesman? Not really, but life isn’t always fair.

      No, take the patch off the other eye for a minute. The Cabinet Manual is very clear this is ok, as it was when National did it.
      
      Robertson isn’t getting paid. It is a party fundraiser. And the mere fact that the finance minister goes to a dinner and talks about what the government is doing, does not mean he is carrying out a “ministerial function”.
      
      On any non partisan interpretation of the rule against accepting payments for performing a ministerial function, that rule is referring to conduct that is very different from what happened here.

In fact so far the same seems to be the case in Governing the country where the biggest failures are trying to be covered up. That is apart from waiting for directions from 120 odds expert groups. Now it looks like beauty contests are dead! Are we going to punish all the beautiful women because plain, fat, or ugly ones have their feelings hurt. Maybe the intention is to pave the way for hijab wearing competitions?

The day is fast approaching where *Beauty Pageants* will only be worth viewing on the radio.

Mercury’s Globug pre-pay power system has come under attack (again) from Consumer. The principal claims are that some customers are being forced into the scheme, power is more expensive under the scheme and there are charges associated with topping up.
The scheme seems profitable for Mercury as it has the money up front and there is no ‘bad debt’ problems, but it does come at a cost (installing the special meter and extra administration) but this raises the issue whether this should be borne by Globug customers (some of whom have no option but to use Globug) or spread among Mercury customers at large (thus making Mercury slightly less competitive compared with the others). There are also complaints about the 75c top up fee at dairies, but then Mr Raj would expect a commission for ‘selling’ Globug power.
Should there be cross subsidisation?

  When you have a bad credit history, people are less likely to want to do business with you, and if they choose to do so they will probably charge you more than they charge other people. I wouldn’t expect Consumer to understand that though.

    Seems Mercury (Globug) developed the most effective prepay system with automatic cutoff and the other players (card meters or keypad meters) have dropped out or not accepting new customers. And you can only get Globug if you agree to pay extra to pay off previous arrears with Mercury or some other power companies. There are other prepay companies (eg Powershop) but they do not have an automatic cutoff facility so would still require credit checks etc.
    So it is not surprising that Globug is as popular as payday moneylenders.

    @Nigel Kearney it is a bit like trading online using the pay first method of selling well priced items below the SRP. Often asked is it COD? They fail to understand it comes at a cost that would push the purchase price up compared to shopping from home for goods shipped freight free to their door. So I tell them you pay I ship same day while providing a safe secure means to pay.
    The most noticeable thing is a that the lower the value of the item the lower the level of mutual trust they display. Buyers of higher priced goods have always done their checking before their first contact while the budget buyers don’t how to.

A light hearted contribution for the end of the week:
Horses look after their own-

Horses are very clever, community minded animals.
We have three horses (A, B and C) which live in a large paddock and, being herd and hierarchal animals, they seldom leave each other.
Yesterday OH saw B standing at the paddock gate by herself, so detoured over to have a few words.
B was unsettled and as soon as she saw OH approaching, she unusually turned tail and started trotting off, but glancing behind her as she did so.
(You don’t usually leave until you are sure the human is not bringing food).
OH followed and found A isolated from sight and tangled in wire, unable to free herself. Horse C, last in this pecking order, was standing dutifully alongside.
Once A was freed, she typically tried to bite C (you have to blame someone, don’t you), before trotting off in search of a bit more hay.

On Morning Report today – Evan Thame interviewed at length about being charged for meth contamination is a state house, and also having his belongings destroyed. Details are in the decision, link below.

This one is a bit unusual in that it is acknowledged that it was probably a boarder causing the contamination, as tenants had left town and later gave notice. Mr Thame wants compo for belongings destroyed, said on the wireless he did not know that was happening. This aspect is not mentioned in the TT decision, though it is stated that contamination was at the lower end of the scale. So assume it would not now trigger decontamination.

Seems to me there is a case for some compo here, though the Thame’s definitely contributed to the situation wittingly or not.

    Williams line was, Davis was this exceptional teacher in Northland teaching Maori kids to read & write. So Williams, encouraged him to be a MP.
    
    It is a case of 1 of 2 things:
    1. He is way out of his depth as a MP & minister; or

    He has since apologised for making a sexist judgement remark.

Personally I’d start making plans to get out, if that’s the thinking of your average voter then stick a fork in NZ, because it’s done.

Soper’s article in the failing newspaper this morning had a headline that got me excited “Why David Seymour has a point about state housing”. Although I’m not a Seymour fan I was surprised Soper would even come close to saying he could be right. It did not take long however for Barry’s dislike of David to appear. For some reason Davids ideas cannot be taken seriously because of “his truckie toes on the dance floor, he’s in no position to be casting aspersions.” What dancing has to do with housing is beyond me……Woops… no I’m wrong because currently Phil of Shit is dancing on the point of a pin.

    The US debt (described as unacceptable, by senator Obama) in and around 2008 was approx.
    $9 TRILLION by 2016 it became nearly

  Well Obama presided over the most anaemic economic recovery in US history. Excessive regulations, high taxation meant that 3% economic growth rate was seen as a pipe dream in Obama’s time.
  
  Suddenly in comes Donald Trump. His administration slashes regulations, cuts corporate taxes, promises to focus on economic growth and jobs and frees up the energy sector. Now 3% economic growth is seen as very likely, in fact some pundits are predicting 4%! Unemployment is now below 4% and black unemployment is at its lowest level ever recorded.
  
  Donald Trump has done everything differently to Obama. The Obama era is almost entirely over. The US economy is booming as a result of the Trump policies.
  
  Interestingly enough here in New Zealand we are doing the exact opposite and focusing on income redistribution, more taxation, more regulations and killing off the energy sector.
  
  Scott predicts that the US economy will continue to boom while the New Zealand economy will be at best anaemic. Our government inherited a steadily improving economic situation and is doing its absolute best to drive our country into recession. The next election cannot come soon enough in my opinion.

What’s going on in Southland?

The dairy industry, probably now with aluminium, the lifeblood of the area, is about to be hemmed back by environmental rules, but the Southland Chamber of Commerce wants a lift in immigration.

The Department of Labour has been funnelling refugees from Colombia, near the Equator, but you can bet they’ll be through the back door to Australia and headed for sunny Queensland as soon as residency allows them.

The real opportunity for Southland is recruiting and retaining some of the hundreds or thousands of young people coming there for education under the local subsidy scheme.

The answer of course is to pay them a decent wage. That might keep them there, at least for a while, and some would put down roots.

  Instead of running to the media with sob stories, you instead pick up the phone and call the appropriate colleague for a korero.
  It also pays to visit dept. heads and get a briefing, this may include a field visit.

Parker said figures released by Statistics NZ showing a high level of house purchases by overseas buyers in New Zealand’s least affordable areas, vindicated the Government’s move to ban foreign buyers of existing homes.

The figures showed that 7.3% of homes sold in the Auckland region in the first quarter of this year were sold to overseas buyers, and in some central suburbs overseas buyers accounted for almost 19% of purchases.

In Queenstown-Lakes, overseas buyers accounted for almost 10% of purchases.

“That shows the concentration of buying is in the areas of worst affordability and where price rises have been the highest,” Parker said.

More than one out of every five federal prisoners is foreign-born, according to a joint report from the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security released on Thursday.

There were a total of 183,058 prisoners in Bureau of Prisons (BOP) custody as of Dec. 31, 2017, according to the government’s quarterly assessment.

Of those, 38,132 — or 21 percent — were known or suspected aliens. Nearly two-thirds of that foreign-born prison population did not have lawful immigration status, the DOJ/DHS report stated.

A (true) tale of two TV news organisations and what they decide Kiwi’s should see!

Tonight TV3’s Newshub carried the Alan “F**k, I could f**king nail you up against the wall” Duff on-camera melt-down against a Spinoff journo (because he dared mentioned not everyone in NZ adores the PM Select) during their coverage of the Northcote by-election, including stating both the Labour candidate and the PM herself refused to comment.

Yet again, more evidence of TVNZ’s bias protecting the reputation of Ardern and the NZ Labour Party, so that everyday Kiwi viewers remain covered in fairy dust and still smitten with the “people’s princess”!

Hello TVNZ – anyone home??!!! Don’t you strut around saying your job is to “speak truth to power” and to “hold the powerful to account”??? Are you really “TVNZ” or pretty much the “NZ Woman’s Weekly” nowadays???
