      I know what you mean (and I agree to a certain extent), but, to be fair, it is as much about public appetite as MSM prioirites. It is a dramatic unfolding story – racing to rescue children, underground, waters may rise, international response team – it is like an episode of Thunderbirds.
      Can you still remember “baby Jessica” who got stuck in the well in Texas(?) – that was in the 80’s sometime (30 years or more ago). Same sort of circus.

        You can call it a ‘circus’, but it’s just human. It’s precisely why, biblically, Christ used the examples:

        That’s the human way – find that which is lost. Other expressions of it which include the question of honour, would be ‘leave no man behind’.
        
        It isn’t about ‘tragedy’ or ‘death’ or ‘risk’. It’s about retrieval, success, triumph – especially of life over the worst circumstances and through common effort. It’s what can be achieved when people are prepared to submit their collective resources for a common commitment to someone’s being saved from an unfortunate event which could happen to any one of us, at any time.
        
        There are few more powerful experiences than the sense of belonging and unity which human beings crave above everything else – which drives all marketing, in every subject, on every level. Probably the most commonly felt would be about a rugby or football win etc. But when you’re winning against death and disaster, against all odds, the stakes are mesmerising. The ‘hero’ with the special skills, strength, and commitment has never lost and will never lose popularity because it’s an essential to the human condition – a basis of hope, unity, and pride.
        
        What Thailand has gained from this is immeasurable, nationally and internationally, on all levels – and it will have some level of change for everyone. Similarly, NZ lost the same thing(s) at Pike River.

I have mixed views on the purchase of the P-8 Posiden. There is no disputing the fact they are not well suited to New Zealand’s needs. But unfortunately there isn’t really a better alternative.

The critics complaining that the P-8 is too expensive, that we don’t need its high-tech sub hunting capabilities, they aren’t wrong unfortunately. For New Zealand’s purposes the P-8 is in some ways inferior to the P-3s they’ll be replacing. Its operating costs are higher. Its loiter time on station is less. And it’s designed for a high altitude mission profile which is less than ideal for the sort of visual searches often used during search & rescue and fisheries patrol. The NZDF will probably end up operating the aircraft at low altitude/low speed a lot of the time anyway, which will doubtless mean reduced fuel-efficiency and airframe lifespan.

But the problem is… the P-8 is basically the only game in town.

In an ideal world, we would replace the P-3s with new-build P-3s, or a similar aircraft. While the design is more than fifty years old, its capabilities remain absolutely ideal for New Zealand’s needs. But unfortunately, nobody builds such an aircraft. There just isn’t one on the market for us to buy. The critics claim there are cheaper aircraft that could do what NZ requires, but I call bullshit on that. Name another patrol aircraft that has the range and endurance to cover NZ’s massive EEZ and search and rescue zone? There just isn’t one. The patrol version of the Bombadier Dash-8 is the only thing that even comes close, and even that would be a massive step down in capability compared to the Orion.

Our choices come down to either a huge reduction in our maritime surveillance capability (unacceptable), custom-designing an aircraft ourselves (expensive and risky), or biting the bullet and purchasing the P-8. At the end of the day the P-8 may not be an ideal choice for NZ, but it’s realistically the only option we have.

At what point does a fool like Marks just recognise that we know he doesn’t have a clue what he is talking about and his job is just to give a public face to a cabinet decision that should have been based on recommendations from his officials.
  
  He is clearly out of the pre-internet age, inhabited by those of us who thought politicians were for the most part well informed people. Sadly, we have come to realise differently.

        Long range executive jets are right sized for this sort of thing and can carry 10 crew. But they too cost not much less than a 737(cheaper running costs) but no one is putting all electronics together to make it all work.
        What worries me is that we will be locked into expensive electronics upgrades by Boeing as software integration is King now. Previously we could just buy upgrades that suited us and often skip a couple of generations at a lower final cost

    There was a Boeing proposed cheaper model based on a mid size executive jet the Boeing MSA. Or a European based regional airliner type like the ones sir NZ flies. Probably have to get something like that anyway just to look after our economic zone and do search rescue in region

    I actually hadn’t looked into the P-1 in detail. Looks like it might have been a good choice. At a quick read of the specs it seem more similar to the P-8 than the P-3 – jet engines, higher speed but not as good a loiter time, state of the art sensor and weapons options. Still, if it was cheaper than the P-8, it could have done the job fine.
    
    But I suspect the interoperability argument will have been what made the decision. With Australia, the UK, and the USA all using P-8s, we’d have been the odd-man out with P-1s. Spares would have been harder to get as well; Kawasaki would have been the only source.

      737 is poor choice as airframe goes due to its age and the wing was sized all those years ago for shorthaul airport gates. Very poor at higher altitudes which is where long range surface search comes in( Australia is buying a different plane for that). Plus runway performance at Max weight isn’t great, the reason to leave Whenuapai. No jet with swept wings is going to do well tooling around at low altitudes- don’t have MAD for that anyway( India has bought that version)

        P8 has same wing as the 737 version it’s based on, which I think is the 737-700 model. There might be small changes. Main change is fuselage to have internal bomb bay. Doesn’t even have 4 quadrant search radar like the Kawasaki P1does to look behind(neither did Orion) just have to hope a fleeting contact only occurs in forward hemisphere

        Boeing says the plane is -800 model ( I said -700)
        Boeing says P8 wingspan is 37.64 m which is a bit more than standard -800 as they have the -900ER model wings with ‘raked wing tips’
        But its all still taken from 737 models and is known by Boeing model number 737-800ERX

      CM and Than, the problem with the P1 is that it doesn’t really exist yet. The Japanese are working on it but it is not at all proven like the P8.
      
      Same goes for the airbus one based off the A319, it only exists as a concept drawing.

    Presumably they looked at the Kawasaki and decided that a plane that could actually take-off and land at their existing naval airbases and maybe half of the airports in the southern pacific ocean was too good to be true.
    
    So naturally they went with the P8 which can only use 10% of the existing airbases. And even smarter option would have been to use one of the many smaller propellor driven planes around the size of our current birds, or opt for a jetpowered MPA on a business jet platform that can actually use 90% of the runways in the Southern Pacific.
    
    For the Americans money is no object, if they had to rebuild every single runway at every single air-base to use it they wouldn’t bat an eyelid. I am glad we share their mentality with our puny budget.

  Some good points Than. In a way it’s repeating what the Orion’s were in the 60s, based on an out date airliner that was built in the rivets age and controlled by wires and levers.
  
  The budgeted cost staggers me. They say ‘only half’ is for the cost of planes themselves ? Previous stories about a mixed US Navy buy and for allies shows the contract price is around
  US$128 mill each. This is still well short of NZ$1.15 billion(1/2) price. And yet they are way over the top for most occasions around NZ or South Pacific and we’ll never see a ‘red’ sub South of the equator

    The $128 million is the unit price for an individual aircraft, no spares, no training, no simulator. We have paid for a complete package, and the price is basically the same as paid by Australia and the UK.
    The same sort of reasoning applies for the F35. The unit cost is now $85 million, but if NZ bought say 12 the package cost would be at least $3 billion. The UK is paying around $20 billion for 48 F35.

      Spares ? These things only fly a fraction of the hours per year that say Air NZ do ( they have Airbus model) and arent doing the high numbers of cycles of takeoffs/ landings it was designed for. Engine is renowned for its trouble free time over a long number of hours.

  I think the P-8 purchase is a rare sensible decision by the CoL. Long range maritime surveillance is arguably the NZDF’s most important and most useful capability. These aircraft will be fitted out with electronics that give them a far superior surveillance capability to the P-3s, which have indeed done a wonderful job over 50 years. They will also have the ability to respond quickly and effectively to any maritime threats. And they will make a valuable contribution to international operations against terrorism and keeping our vital sea-lanes open. So I am pleased.

    Range and endurance basically. Our search and rescue zone of responsibility is absolutely huge, and the aircraft needs to be able to stay out for a decent amount of time to perform this role effectively.
    
    Now the P-8 is larger than we need, yes. But unfortunately there just isn’t an aircraft in the sweet spot that would be ideal for us. Few if any other nations have the same requirements we do, so nobody has designed an aircraft to meet these requirements. Most smaller maritime patrol aircraft are a lot smaller, intended for short ranged patrols near the coast. They’d be no good for long range patrol over a large area of ocean.

  P-8 purchasing kills two birds with the one stone. It will also put the first nail in the coffin of Whenuapai air base because the P-8’s won’t be able to land there.
  
  I’ll bet London to a brick that Twitford has his eyes on the Whenuapai air base for housing !
  
  The government will champion P-8 acquisition and follow with a similar strategy for craft to replace the aging Herc fleet. Once they are all out of the way Twitford will be out at Whenuapai with his Estwing throwing up KiwiFail homes with gay abandon.
  
  Auckland needs to consider the ramifications of this move very cautiously. Whenuapai is Auckland’s second major airport, and the former International airport for that city. As such it is a vital strategic asset, and needs to be protected at all costs. As Auckland continues to grow, the need for a second civilian airport will become more and more evident – and once that parcel of land at Whenuapai falls into Twitfords clutches it will not be possible to return that land to public ownership.
  
  Look at the decades of trouble Sydney has faced with the same problem. The airport that was “absolutely necessary” to facilitate the 2000 olympics is only now getting close to starting construction in former farmland umpteen miles to the west of that city!
  
  To believe that our largest city will not need a second airport in the future is pure folly. To imagine that pressure on air travel into and out of New Zealand’s largest gateway will remain steady – or reduce – is idiocy of the highest order.
  
  Whenuapai needs to remain as an airport-it is vital to our future strategic framework !

    Whenuapai will stay. C-130 replacement will use it and so will P-8 when it hasn’t got enough fuel to get back to Ohakea after a long mission to the north. It’s not that P-8 can’t use Whenuapai runway – it’s only restricted when it’s chock full of fuel.

    Ohakea has the longest runway in the country and does not go over residential conurbations.
    COL would love to build more cheap houses at Whenuapai also.

It will need to be lengthened, especially if the airforce gets their way and replaces the C130s (until recently the smallest cargo plane in the USAF arsenal) wuth the C17s (the largest cargo planes in the USAF arsenal).
        
        But oh well, as long as money is no object. They can also fly the the P8s several hundred kilometers further than would be necessary had they the option to use local basing.

  flying low in rough weather doing searches is incredibly hard on airframes. The turbulence is brutal, and induces large stresses on wing spars that only have so much fatigue life in them when subjected to big alternating stresses. Typical commercial jets just aren’t built for that kind of abuse.

    I would note that NZ has never had the Harpoon anti ship missile. In theory it could have been fitted to the P3, but with some expensive modifications. The P8 is fully equiped for it, so such a decision would now be much easier to make.
    
    No sensible government is going to listen to the Greens on this issue. Clearly training for the current weaponry will continue. Basically that is torpedos and “dumb” bombs. But the P8 also has substantial missile capability. It makes sense to get some of that capability as well.
    
    We did that with the new Seasprites which have the very capable anti ship Koinsberg missile.

  Actually they are not Than, and I think I will write in more detail about that in a future GD post, but wrong on all points I am afraid.
  
  They are not the ‘only game’ in town, there are many different Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPAs) from many different providers, it might be the only ‘american’ option, and it might be the ‘only option’
  based either on what Ron Mark has told them or what their flawed assesment criteria has determined, but they aren’t the only option, and this is from the same people that are seriously considering the C17 globemaster as a replacement for our current cargo planes…
  
  In reality it is fundamentally unsuited for our region in the Southern Pacific because of A.) Performance/Cost, and B.) the planes runway requirements being so high it eliminates like 80% of all basing options in the southern Pacific, we only have two airports in all of NZ that can operate this plane and they are both civil airports, and one of them Auckland is probably far to at capacity to welcome this plane.
  
  Whereas something sensible like a C295MPA/SAAB 2000MPA both of which are around the aproximate size of our current planes, both are propellor driven, and both can operate from pretty much any runway in the Southern Pacific and are the modern version of the P3 that you said would be the best option if it existed. It does exist, it just isn’t made in america, and it is not called the P3 or the P3 Mk2 or the P4… The cost to buy and operate one of these over the total lifetime total cost of ownsership (TCO) is about 1/3rd to 1/4th of the gold plated P8.
  
  Alternatively for a high-end soloution SAABs Swordfish based on the G6000 platform is a jetpowered plane like the P8, its a better plane, it flies faster, cruises faster, and has a longer endurance than the P8, it carries equivelant equipment and its take-off requirements allow it to use 90% of all runways in the pacific, including Niue and Cook Islands which are NZ territories. SAAB also claimed at one point that aproximately two Swordfish MPAs could be operated for the cost of 1 P8..
  
  So yes that ideal world does exist, that 1:1 replacement capability does exist, it may not be american, but the americans definitely use the precursor to the C295MPA the C235MPA in their coastguard they have about 40 of them for EEZ enforcement. And now its being used by Chilee, Portugal, Brazil, and many more will buy this full-capability spectrum plane for EEZ enforcement! Good enough for the Americans, good enough for us!

    The P8 is effectively a modern P3 in conceptual terms, ie range and mission fit out.
    They were the only logical choice. The Kawasaki P1 was potentially in the contest, but with Japan being the only operate there were risks around interoperability and long term maintenance.

      You are deluded wayne (and don’t take that personally), the P3 is last century technology, to say that these modern planes pale in comparison is manifestly unfair. Both of these aircraft are a vast improvement in every single class (except number of engines, its a decrease from 4 to 2) compared to the P3s, infact the P3s we currently have were never fully capable, they have many of their capabilities stripped out… So its like 100x improvement over what we have.
      
      The USA even operates the ‘EADS HC-144 Ocean Sentry’ which is a derivitive of the C235 which is a shorter version and the precursor of the C295. And the C295 in its various MPA configurations is growing in popularity amongst foreign operators.

      Look I understand that in terms of equipment options the P8 is likely going to carry more weight of equipment, and all things being equal it is going to have a bit more capability in that regard. It is also going to have somewhat longer range. But its 4x the size, and 3-4x the price of the modern P3 alternatives.
      
      You can get the same capaiblities more or less out of the SAAB Swordfish as the P8, you can operate 2 for the price of 1 including TCO. It flies faster, cruises faster, has longer endurance and range and it can operate from ~90% of runways in the southern pacific. The P8 can’t, its limited to like ~15% of the total runways in the pacific. The only runways north of auckland in the southern pacific the P8 can use is fiji and american samoa..
      
      There are two runways near that location inside of NZs jursidiction, and another 2 NW and SW of that under Australian Jurisdiction. From a logistics argument the p8 looses. From an economics argument the p8 looses. From a capabilities argument the p8 probably ties with the swordfish.
      
      But I do agree with you that the P1s are a risk, not necessarilly because of the number of operators (thats more of a deeper strategic risk) but certainly on a daily basis because as far as I am aware its not based on a mass-market commercial plane.
      
      Any mass-market commercially derived plane will have lower risk as it can use civil supply channels for its routine maintainance and parts, and is 100% interoperable with civil airbases.
      
      What would I suggest, look if we 100% are going to spend that much resources in the MPA arena, then get a sensible high-low mix, say 6 C295 MPAs and 3 Swordfish, or say 4 Swordfish and 4 C295s or 6 Swordfish and 0 C295s, something like that.

        The P8 could use Rarotonga, Samoa (the country), Tonga, Niue. Basically every country in the Pacific has runways long enough.
        
        Admittedly I am going by the fact that B777’s can use these runways, having been in B777’s that landed in Tonga and Samoa. I am pretty sure a P8 can use any runway that a B777 can.

        real reason is small wing for what is quite a heavy plane for its size needs longer runways of Ohakea

        Wayne I was refering specifically to runways within the jursidiction of Australia and NZ that currently meet runway length requirements because we could operate there basically tomorrow without requiring special permission.
        
        The P8 would not be able to run from Nieue or Raro because the runways do not meet the USNs length requirements. Now can they physically take-off and land, probably, under the right conditions, with the right load and the right wheather. Obviously there is some safety built into the USNs guidelines. But it is outside of the normally allowed operating paramaters and I think for normal operations sticking to those is fair.
        
        There are only 3 runways that I know of in the Southern Pacific outside of mainland AUS/NZ that can take the P8, Tonga, Fiji and American Samoa and they are all clumped together. There are however many more runways all over the place that are long enough for the Sworffish or the C295 even if they are too short for the P8.
        
        And because Ztev despite the P8 weighting more or less the same as the Japanese P1 the P8 is underpowered. The P1 can take-off with 1.5K of runway, the P8 somewhat near 2.6k. I bet that the Japs went with a 4 engine design partly to get the power required to ensure interoperability with pre-existing runways.

    Wrong. As Wayne Mapp said, none of the aircraft you cite have anywhere near the range, endurance, and equipment fit to meet New Zealand’s needs. Purchasing any of these models would have resulted in a massive decrease in capability.
    
    And to be blunt, if you’re going to claim the C-17 is the largest cargo aircraft the USA has (it isn’t, that would be the C-5 Galaxy), and that the C-130 is the smallest cargo aircraft (again wrong, that would be the C-2 Greyhound… OK technically that’s USN not USAF, but still in American service) you don’t come across as a particularly credible source on military aviation.
    
    To retain the same level of capability we currently have with the P-3s there are effectively only 3 options – the P-8, the Kawasaki P-1, or wait until the Airbus A319 derivative becomes available. Any other MPA option would result in a massive reduction in operational range, equipment fit, or both.

In most interviews given by Peter’s it only takes a few minutes for him to revert to his favorite answer the other lot created the problems we have to fix today and we can’t fix them in one budget. This germ spent nine years in opposition stopping bills that would have benefited NZ and now wants to blame National for all his and the inept Coalition’s problems.

  But Happychappy imagine how different it might be if it were National at the helm now as the nurses pay worries would have been by A) reduced tax especially as some rise through the income bands and B) they could be looking at a better offer that would see them a lot more disposable income. Better as apposed to bigger while being so much more affordable from the healthy surplus while noting the stark difference in each administrations contingency provisions. After all contingency allocations soon become savings if there are less need to use them are can be top up funding for essential needs in any portfolio budget. Winston was visiting Israel with his top government officials. Fortunately, he died during the visit. The Israelis offered to bury him in Israel for free, explaining that it will save money that can be used to help the poor people of New Zealand.   It’s not a “soft exit” that May has proposed, but a Clayton’s Exit – the exit you have when you’re not having an exit. It would have left Britain subject to all the EU rules and directives with zero say in setting them.
  
  Which was stupidity. Britain just needs to say “goodbye”, declare unilateral free trade with penalties if their own exports are unfairly targetted. The NI border is an issue potentially, but just deal with it as it comes – and make it an Irish & EU problem, not a British one.

Whats going on with Goff.Over forty years ago he protested by putting the boot into returning NZ soldiers from Vietnam.He even spat at them and threw paint. It was called free speech. Goff got away with it.
Roll on a few years later. As an MP in a Labour Government while Foreign Affairs Minister on a trip to meet up with a well known terrorist called Yasser Arafat said to be the leader of Hamas. Goff hugged him as well as gifting him $500,000 NZ dollars was said at the time to buy guns and shoot Israelis.

Now the latest act of betrayal of NZs, by Goff.
He has the gall after being told by some Muslim Mullahs regarding the visit of some Canadians wanting to put some balance into the type of actitivities of Islam performed by that group.
The unelected Mullahs told NZs number one political hypocrite Goff and that is saying someting, there would be trouble if the Canadians were allowed to address a public forum in a rate payer provided hall in Takapuna.
Once more to reiterate what is going on in NZ,when a grubby little hypocrite called Goff aided and abetted by a few Muslim troublemakers can attempt forever to destroy the type of Democracy that thousand of NZs have died for.
It will be a very sad day and a slippery slope if ratbags like Goff who was voted in by democratic means can act more like a real two faced bastard with no guts,or more like another NZ Politician who answers to no one except himself.

I want to thank Gutless Goff. I had never heard of Lauren Southern until he decided to play Stalin. Now that I have watched several of her videos I find that she is young,courageous, beautiful in a natural way, speaks clearly, and stands for the conservative values that National once represented but has so compromised that no one knows what they stand for anymore. She is maligned because she is prepared to expose the real evils that the free world are afraid to confront. She is in no way extreme anything, unlike our many left wing zealots.

        Evolutionary psychology is of course a viewpoint that the left wants to suppress because it basically opposes the idea of “the clean slate” that humans can be remade in the image of our left fascist betters.
        
        It is, BTW, a perfectly valid and scientific area of research. It isn’t necessarily true, but being scientific is open to refutation by counter examples. However the current opposition uses the refutation by polemic, political opinion, and flat assertion.

        I am an atheist. I don’t pray.
        
        Yes, I am well aware of the paradox of tolerance.
        Karl Popper reckoned we need to stand against those who use violence and abuse us. That is now my position.

        Not so Maggy, I have a lot of respect for your intellect and the way you deport yourself, which is why I am so curious. I just can’t understand how you can hold to pacifism as a reasonable or rational personal choice while enjoying life in a society founded and built using at least some necessary violence to overthrow the previous tyrants, and where you are now reliant upon ongoing protection from both malevolent individuals, groups and even potentially nations who would do you harm by kiwis who would use violence to protect you. It just feels somehow like freeloading, to be fixedly unwilling to do the dirty-work yourself while enjoying the benefits.         The cowardice and freeloading arguments have often been used against those that try and walk the pacifist route through life.
        
        There are other ways to serve and work against violence than by taking up arms/resorting to abuse-violence at the first instance.
        
        Friendly persuasion is the first step.
        Assistance to the weak, abused, bullied, hurt is the way many pacifists choose to contribute to society.
        
        There is no comfortable position.
        But pre-emptive violence is hardly a solution to human co-existence.
        
        Anyway, back to my initial posting…..

Monckton gave a polished, professional and, in his words “scientific evidence based” talk.
There were challenging questions from the genuine and knowledgeable conservationists present, but there was no shouting down or violent protesting – and no demands that he should be banned for sharing his views.
We made up our own minds about Monckton’s information without fear or favour.
That’s as it should be in a grown up, democratic society free from totalitarianism.
But we don’t have that anymore, do we.

The COL is to redevelop 128 Greys avenue into the bigger and brighter slum. There is another building that is sitting empty in Greys avenue. When it was built it was a first for New Zealand now its a asbestos death trap. The old Auckland city headquarters. If Goff’s team are wondermen why can’t they sell it to Twitford for homeless accomodation. 16 floors at 20 units per floor. It’s so badly contaminated there would be a quick turnover of tenants. Homeless problem solved

I listened to the first three episodes then gave up. The subject of the podcast is so low rent that I just don’t care that she spent twenty years in prison for a crime she claims she did not commit. Given the long list of crimes she has been convicted for our society was a much better place without her for two decades.

  We don’t need a money sucking organisation for this issue. Yes those first couple of months are very important but after that breastfeeding has no measurable advantages over formula. Is the 3rd world changing? No because it costs to much to buy. Some women have problems with breastfeeding. Some babies have problems with breastfeeding. Why not leave it up to health professionals to help thier patients to do the best in thier own situation.

  – Urbanization on flood plains (the only flat land around). This was okay years ago when there were only paddy fields
  – Building houses close to the foot of hills (extremely vulnerable to landslides)
  – A high proportion of elderly living alone
  – Many short, fast-flowing rivers that can quickly wash roads away and cut off access

“Alex Davis: Research shows no benefit from women on company boards”

In the past five years a drumbeat has echoed through business, a mantra if you like, that companies perform better when women sit at the board table.

It intuitively appeals to our sense of fairmindedness and equality. It has become accepted wisdom, organisations as august as McKinsey, Harvard and, locally, the Institute of Directors have led the charge in promoting gender diversity.

Unfortunately, it’s also incorrect. There is no empirical evidence that supports this thesis at all.

The author then goes on to discuss two separate meta studies of board gender diversity, published in 2015, which together synthesised more than 140 separate studies with a combined sample of more than 90,000 firms from more than 30 countries.

Conclusion: “The relationship between board gender diversity and company performance is either non-existent (effectively zero) or very weakly positive.”

I shall watch eagerly for Julie Anne Genter’s reply …

  Agreed. It’s the whole diversity argument which argues that diversity is a good thing for organisations and businesses. They argue that diverse groups are better, they objectively perform better than non diverse groups.
  
  In my experience in business and in church life this is not always the case. People of different races, different cultures see things very differently and may not work together well at all. Even in a church setting where everyone is Christian, different races may value different things and may not see eye to eye on a range of issues.
  
  What about this for a non pc thesis? Homogenous groups work the best. People of the same background and culture perform better than people of different backgrounds and cultures in a team situation.
  
  What’s my chances of getting government or university funding do you think? ?

  A Supreme Court Justice should interpret the constitution as it is written. Unfortunately liberals have interpreted the constitution as a “living document” and found a right to abortion and a right to homosexual marriage out of whole cloth.
  This Supreme Court will adhere to the constitution as they are meant to do. If liberals want abortion, for example, then they need to win people over to their viewpoint and win elections.
  That’s the key. If you want to change the law you have to win elections, not expect liberal justices to legislate from the bench. This is a good day for the United States and the rule of law.

More on Theresa May and her treachery –

Brexit is dead – strangled at the weekend by Prime Minister Theresa May and her cabal of Remainer cronies.
It was a brilliant coup, masterfully conducted with a sadist’s attention to detail.

All the ministers in the Cabinet were hauled up to Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country residence, where their phones were confiscated, as though they were naughty children. Then the stubbornly pro-Brexit ones who were rightly disgusted by the shaming sell-out deal May had cobbled together with her virulently Remainer civil servants were given the same choice Rommel was in 1944: cyanide pill or slow career death.

The cyanide pill option would have involved resigning immediately on principle: but then being ritually humiliated by having their official car confiscated and having to walk to the train station via the mile-long drive, or catch a cab, with a £67,000 pay cut.

A letter to each minister, leaked to the press, warned them of this beforehand. Petty, but given how vain ministers are, very effective.

None of the leading Brexiteers present – not Michael Gove, not even Boris Johnson whose last chance this was to establish himself as the credible voice of the Leave resistance – chose to do the decent thing. (Though Brexit Secretary David Davis has resigned since, as has his brilliant and principled junior minister Steve Baker – one of the unsung heroes of the Leave campaign).

Really, though, the “who did what to whom and why?” elements of this story are a distraction from the only thing that matters: Brexit has been sabotaged, democracy undermined, and the people betrayed by the Remainer establishment.

  I don’t think I’d assume all is lost just yet.
  
  The current situation was always inevitable. Whoever became PM to enact Brexit was always going to be shredded – and in the end, May will be. It would probably be better if only she had to be but if Boris is determined to add himself, there’s nothing anyone can do. David Davis has more sense.
  
  The people would always expect their PM to attempt to make a deal with the EU – even just in the name of fair trading and common sense – so the process always had to go on. They are British, after all.
  
  The EU, and the Remainers in the UK, were always going to spend their time trying to overturn the referendum. It’s what’s been done everywhere else. And they were never going to negotiate fairly or rationally in the best interests of any people in the EU, including the UK.
  
  All of that was a ‘given’. Admittedly, it is frustrating and boring and a complete waste of everyone’s time, energy, and money – especially the taxpayers’ money. I don’t doubt some MPs truly deludedly believe they are trying to make ‘responsible’ decisions but the ringleaders tearing the UK down are just treasonous.
  
  Ultimately, though, the majority of the UK people know it’s a question of democracy. They also want to be ‘free’ and have been thriving since they made the decision. It would be a very brave or extremely stupid person who thought they could walk over them with impunity.
  
  You can’t stop people being greedy, stupid, obsessed, etc. It all has to play out. All the infighting is irrelevant until the EU accept the ‘deal’, which they well may not. Let’s hope. Let’s hope also that it forces a ‘no deal’, because that would be the easiest course and the UK will thrive all the more and all the more easily. If not, it will just take longer.
  
  All the talk about business not coping or failing is rubbish. ‘Business’ thrives on crisis, because it means opportunity for whoever is prepared to accommodate and/or adapt to new circumstances, especially those who do so the fastest. You can believe there are lots of people positioned and positioning themselves to take advantage of whatever ‘crises’ emerge – some undoubtedly hoping for them.
  
  I don’t know what other people think when these companies threaten to stop operating – like the flights. I just think “I wonder who’s scrambling for rapid scale-up potential?”

    It’s also useful to recall that Theresa May was anti-Brexit, and was indeed a supporter of ‘remaining’ yet despite this became Prime Minister. Her words (from memory) were along the lines of ‘I’ll do the best I can in this unusual situation out of ‘loyalty’ to my country’;. She was, at best, a ‘ring-in’ and, at least initially, I believe she tried her best to ‘remove’ the UK from the EU’s grasp. However, old habits would seem to have re-asserted themselves and the initial ‘will’ seems to have faded-away over time as the enormity of what she was trying to do sank in. She was not exactly helped by the ‘pro-Europe’ statements of some of her fellow Conservative party members who seemed determined to ‘White Ant’ her for their own personal reasons.
    
    It will be interesting to see who arrives next…

A reporter was accompanying the Riot Police during a major disturbance in Auckland. Hordes of Peace Action supporters hurled rocks, petrol bombs and anything that wasn’t nailed down. The reporter grew anxious as the police inspector shouted on his loud hailer. “Deploy water cannons”! With a whoosh, a couple of hundred protesters are battered back down the street. Arse over tit they tumbled.

After a minute or so, they regrouped and fought back with a vengeance. The reporter grew more anxious. “Deploy tear gas” Shouted the inspector. Dozens of canisters are thrown into the crowd who by now are gasping and choking as they dispersed.

As quickly as the gas disappeared, back again they came throwing all they could find. “Prepare to deploy rubber bullets.. Aim……. Fire, BANG! They fell and staggered away howling in pain as the reporter was shitting bricks

Again they regrouped and with renewed vigour, the mob prepared to charge forward at the police. “Send in the dogs”! Ordered the chief. Fifty or so half staved, drooling German shepherds were let loose…. chasing after and tearing to pieces those unlucky enough not to get away fast enough.

Within minutes the streets were like a ghost town and peace descended once and for all. The reporter, now relieved asked the police chief, “Why not use the dogs in the first place?

Don the Kiwi

Talking to my son this afternoon – he complaining about what this govt. is doing to the rental housing market. He has decided to sell his rental – purchased for $400k 8 years ago: spent $100k updating it: now worth probably $995k. Location is Valley Rd., Mt. Maunganui.
He wanted to keep it, but decided its not worth it now that the govt. has removed tax claim backs.
The problem is, he’s not the only one. A close friend has 3 rentals – another friend has 5, and they’ve all decided its not worth keeping them and they’re going to sell and take the nice fat profit.
That’s only 3 guys in Mt.Maunganui, quitting 9 rentals. How many others are making this decision.
Obviously the govt. is screwing the rental market, and Have no concept of unintended consequences – purely ideologically driven – or is that Idiotilogically driven?

  Creating this parasitic rental industry was easily the biggest social and financial mistake our nation has ever made.
  It cracks me up when landlords say ” if we didn’t own them where would they live”. Answer is they would live in the same house but with them paying the mortgage at about half the price.
  I hope they get properly stung for there profiteering by IRD. Wage earners actually work and have to pay tax so non workers milking solo mums (taxpayers money) and accomodation supplements (taxpayers money) should pay the top rate.

‘Curious’ 13-Year-Old Boy Taken To Hospital After Inserting USB Into His Penis

A 13-year-old boy had to be taken to the hospital to have a phone cable removed from his penis after he inserted in himself out of curiosity. The boy cut off the head of the USB and put the cable into his genitals, which left him in extreme pain.

Dr. Xu Liyan, from the Department of Urology, told the 13-year-old that the cable stuck in his penis had become twisted and tangled. Dr. Liyan continued that the cable reached as far as his bladder and that the cable was the length of 10 centimeters long. Dr. Liyan also stated that from the x-ray taken, the doctors could see where the cable was in a dead knot and that was why Duoduo could not pull it out.

Genital injuries can occur in men and women and can cause permanent damage and excessive bleeding. For boys and men, most genital related injuries include a straddle injury, getting the penis caught in a zipper, or a toilet seat falling on the genitals.
