Soper’s Column on the Health Minister’s spinning on his family holiday does nothing for his credibility. First he said he came back early without his family and then it emerged they came with him. Obviously he was ordered back but he did not want to admit that so he spun his story. The family holiday should have been postponed until the strike was sorted but Minister Clark wanted it both ways and the family suffered.

  He cancelled his holiday, he said, leaving the clear impression the family was left sunning themselves on the other side of the ditch. But it turns out his family accompanied him on his return flight home, which indicates to me he was fully intending to stay on holiday with them until he was told by someone higher up the food chain to get home and do his job.

Acting Prime Minister, Rt Hon Winston Peters, has announced a Provincial Growth Fund investment to help develop hydrogen fuel infrastructure in Taranaki. During his visit to New Plymouth today, Mr Peters said a grant of $950,000 will be made to Hiringa Energy and its partners which is seeking to develop zero emission hydrogen transport fuel.

Regional Economic Development Under-Secretary Fletcher Tabuteau is pleased to be in Taranaki today to announce $600,000 from the Provincial Growth Fund to support the Taranaki region to diversify its economy.

The Provincial Growth Fund seems to operate like an anti-wrinkle serum investment fund. $950,000 here. $600,000 there.

– Step 1: The government bans an industry (side effect = Taranaki voters develop wrinkles).

– Step 2: The government invests in a company that is “seeking to develop” an anti-wrinkle serum (Taranaki voters need to wait and see if a product is developed and commercialised).

It’s called live-and-hope politics.

  Hydrogen is being tested in a molecular form in the LENR research projects. It is bound with aluminum and lithium as a hydride. Nickel is being used too. We deal safely with bound hydrogen everyday in the form of water.

      Hydrogen is not generated it has to be unbound from within water or whatever else they use. It is highly reactive so is basically never alone.
      It’s isolation takes large quantities of energy–work has to be done to break the bonds. I understand that using the energy from hydrogen to create electricity which is to be used to separate out hydrogen from water is regarded as a perpetual motion machine. Not economic.

  Funny Nostradamus as there always seems to be particular key words needed to be granted large amounts of money from a lefty administration. Back in the day any program that offered numeracy and literacy for the unwashed was the key. Now it is diversity to anything other than fossil fuel that is the key to riches which unfortunately will add immense costs on top of the losses from the premature closure of the O&G industry.
  The fact that action was a crude attempt to try and make the silly little girl look good at CHOGM was a dismal failure since that gathering was concerned with more serious real issues. But you seem to be on to something with the PGF being a wrinkle fund made necessary by the most wrinkly of them all as a result of his secret 38 page agreement. What else is yet to come? It is a bit like the optimistic young pregnant girl rubbing vanishing cream on her swelling mid section. As good a remedy as offered from the snake oil salesman that 93% know is anything but a cure.

Interestingly on Sunday night TV1 News referred to Southern / Molyneux as ‘right wing’ so they have climbed down on ‘far right’.

      It’s one thing for the media to throw names such as “right wing” about, but what annoys me is that no-one calls them up on such sloppy use of the English language.
      
      I find it amusing that the most “correct” people I meet are frequently trust-fund babies with family batches on Waiheke Island.

That governments should bow down towards such authoritarianism is the real crime, though.

Gay conversion therapy, has made the lives of thousands of people happier – that is indisputable. I knew someone from school who considered themselves gay for much of their teens and early twenties (his Dad abandoned the family at a young age), was uncomfortable about it, and is now straight and happy and able to enjoy a normal and healthy family life with 2 beautiful children.

All this would have been denied to him if gay conversion therapy were made illegal at the behest of the zealots

The homosexual lobby keep lecturing civil society that we need to “get over it”, but the real truth is that it is Gays that need to “get over it”.

    Yes – from what I understand all it involved was talking to a counsellor for 45 minute sessions over the period of about 18 months.
    
    He was not browbeaten with Christian commandments, nor was not bullied. He just talked to a counsellor and as a consequence his life immeasurably improved and having thrown off his self doubts about his sexuality, is the father of 2 great children.

      The fact he is now married with kids is partially incidental to his background. Love is love, right?

      The UK is a disgrace and an insult to humanity, I guess that banning criticism of their promotion of alternative, unatural and unhealthy homosexual lifestyles wasn’t enough for these ‘people’.
      
      Now they are going after mental health service providers who are trying to help poor confused and troubled individuals to be happy with the body that they have been given!
      
      This shouldn’t come as a surprise, the government did similar things when free-market health clinics were popping up all over the UK, they put in legislation to prevent ‘non-licensed’ healthcare providers from providing healthcare services. Unfortunately this meant that many poor people could no longer afford healthcare.
      
      Unfortunately I suspect the same will happened again in this case. That these people will be denied the mental health services they need to be happy in their own body, to live a normal happy and productive life!

Raises the issue of whether a state house is a home for life. That has never been the case, except for a small number of tenancies with specific conditions. However in 2011 the previous government formalised reviewable tenancies and began to work quietly with state tenants paying market rent to move them into the private sector or home ownership.

That programme has been canned by the current government.

The Thai boys and their coach were all anesthetised so they could be brought out of the cave without incident. The trip out included 3km of deep pools of water through the cave system and could not have been made successfully without taking this action. The Aussie doctor, an anaesthetist, carried on helping to get the boys out despite finding out his own father, back in Aus had died from heart failure during the rescue of the boys.
Thank goodness for amazing people in this world.

  It’s pretty hard to imagine how the community might handle a influx of money if someone starts getting them to sign contracts for this and that.

      The “sub” was sized to fit through 30 cm gaps, but the biggest Issue I would think was its length and rigidity. In my somewhat limited caving experience, narrow squeezes aren’t always tight but nice and straight. More usually they are narrow and involve frequent changes of direction.
      
      Musk just went totally off the pavement with his “pedo” comment (and it could cost him a bundle), but the idea was creditable. He just has such an ego that he can’t imagine being wrong; and has this fixation that he has an answer to anything and everything.

Is this Strike Three for David Clark?

Strike One was the shit that wasn’t running down the walls in the wards of Middlemore Hospital, and his pathetic attempts to blame National.

Strike Two was his phone call to gag the sacked Chair of the Counties-Manukau DHB. We now know that an audit had uncovered dodgy financial transactions, the full extent of which is still to be determined

Now there’s the holiday that wasn’t. Barry Soper gets right to the heart of things this morning (my emphasis added):

Jacinda Ardern promised her Government would be the most open and transparent the country’s ever seen, but they’ve failed.

The fallout from the country’s biggest industrial spat in the health sector in a generation put paid to that.

This time last week it was pretty clear nurses were going to go on strike. Surgery was being delayed in preparation for the walkout and district health boards were working to ensure no lives would be put at risk.

Meanwhile, the minister in charge of the whole shebang – David Clark – was busy packing his bags, along with his family, to take a holiday in Australia. If politics was about perception, this was not a good look. It gave the appearance of a minister who had a cavalier approach to his portfolio.

But it was his fudging of the holiday that made matters worse.

In his first appearance before the media, post the nurses’ strike, he explained his absence by saying he was always going to be here during the strike, but he had to transport his wife and family to Australia, presumably to ensure they arrived safely. This selfless politician was then virtually on the next flight a day later to rightly attend to his responsibilities.

He cancelled his holiday, he said, leaving the clear impression the family was left sunning themselves on the other side of the ditch. But it turns out his family accompanied him on his return flight home, which indicates to me he was fully intending to stay on holiday with them until he was told by someone higher up the food chain to get home and do his job.

This transparent Government’s spin doctor for Clark was in high dudgeon when he was called to find out whether the Clark family accompanied him on his trip back home. He snapped, saying send an email. When I did, I got this reply: “I’m reluctant to discuss my minister’s family with you on the fly or at all to be honest. Can you explain the relevance of your question?”

By return email he was told it was obvious: Clark indicated he’d left his family on holiday in Australia when he hadn’t. It had a bearing on what he’d told us publicly.

David Clark is fast becoming the government’s biggest liability. One cock-up is understandable and excusable for a new Minister in what has often been regarded as a “graveyard” portfolio. Two cock-ups is very, very careless, but three? That’s simply inexcusable.

David Clark should have been stood down from the Health portfolio when the State Services Commissioner agreed to investigate the allegations over the CMDHB audit report. He wasn’t, and now the government has this latest lapse of judgment.

As Soper says “If politics was about perception, this was not a good look”. The perception is that Clark is a lightweight, not on top of his portfolio, and lashing out when his ineptitude is exposed. Will Peters do anything about it, or will crisis talks be going on at the Ardern-Gayford residence?

When today’s events are written in the history books, do you think Donald Trump will have the same standing as Margaret Thatcher. The economic reforms are/were drastic and unpopular, but necessary to kick start their respective country economic might.

Economic reform is always unpopular when its in the present. Anyone can hand out taxpayers money to the unions and their voting public. But that doesnt do the country any favours.

Thatcher will always been regarded as evil, but Britain benefited greatly. The same will be said of Trump in the future.

        The Alpine fault is 100’s of km from Chch. Even an 8+ Alpine Fault earthquake will likely be less severe in Chch than the 2011 earthquake was. And current building stock has been well tested.
        
        It’s towns at ends of long-lakes, perhaps some hydro-dams + Greymouth that are going to be in trouble.
        
        It is quite feasible to build in liquefaction affected areas – just have to build houses that are of equal mass to the earth their foundations displace – like a boat that floats at same level in an earthquake. Foundations are cheap, and add little to a building’s cost.

        There have been lots of big earthquakes along the Alpine Fault in the last 200 years.
        1848 – Marlborough, estimated magnitude = 7.5
        1888 – North Canterbury, estimated magnitude = 7.3
        1929 – Arthur’s Pass, estimated magnitude = 7.1
        1929 – Murchison, estimated magnitude = 7.8
        1968 – Inangahua, estimated magnitude = 7.1
        2003 – Fiordland, estimated magnitude = 7.1
        2009 – Fiordland, estimated magnitude = 7.8
        
        Earthquake energy spreads out into the earth following an approximately inverse square law. Double the distance quarter the magnitude. With Christchurch about 100km away at closest point, though mostly a lot further away. That means about 1% shake as from 10km in lyttelton for same size quake. ~7.8 Murcheson earthquake did little damage in Chch 150-200km away.
        
        Being 100-200km away drops the effective earthquake magnitude by about 1.5-2 points, your 8.x feels more like a 6.x Eg the 7.3 1888 North Canterbury earthquake, didn’t do much major damage other than the cathedral spire.

        Building codes are steadily improving, as buildings are gradually replaced the problems created by the big one will diminish.
        
        It is small town South Island where commercial building stock is 50-100years old and uneconomic to replace that will be hit hardest. Greymouth, Oamaru, Hokitika, Westport etc.

  This is the danger of compliacancy.
  The western nations nearly eliminate the disease but not completely or ignore its presence in the 3rd world. We aslo have had a few generations who haven’t experienced or witnessed its effect on people so millennials don’t have a clue.
  The not making the disease extinct when the human race had the chance will only result in the surviving strains being more resistant to the cure.
  It’s not only syfhilis but all the old school sex nasties are on the comeback with a vengeance.
  
  I’ve got the same statistical chance of my missus putting out as Stephieboy has of engaging in sex with a human, so no worries for me.
  
  I do have concerns for my children as we could end up with a no sex outside of marriage society agian. No try before you buy. No drunk social gatherings in the sauna. More strictly controlled political youth groups. No chance of the wife inviting a friend to stay the night. Increased dangers of beta males losing thier virginity with hired professionals.

As regards affordable housing.
There was a builder on New Hub the other who built three nice homes in Hawkes Bay for about 400K each including the land.

He was a Maori guy and seemed to have some good ideas.
He mentioned, plans and project management.

He needs to be in charge of Kiwibuild.

Good luck to Mr McLennan who saw this Minister coming; he’ll never again enjoy such a beneficial ‘commercial’ deal in his lifetime.
  
  Soon we’ll see these first ‘KiwiBuild’ homes changing ownership from Government to beleaguered ‘first-home’ buyers who can fetch up with mortgage deposits of around $120,000 (i.e. this country’s typical poor and homeless) and who can also win a lottery draw.   There’s more to what’s happening than appears.
  These aren’t all massive projects. These are mostly small projects. The contracts are about supporting a new power generation philosophy. One were many contribute and create far better resiliency to the network.
  This act in its entirety is about protecting the corporate electricity producers while eliminating the structures that make new alternative energy providers able to conduct Buisiness.
  
  A school may have a present cost per kW/h for power. It invests in solar that provides all its power needs on average vs it’s cost of purchase. So it’s financially a viable decision if the economics result in a cost less that the commercial price.
  These contracts now fail due to the withdrawal of the Structual and Bureaucratic support. The ability to sell excess into the system at wholesale rates.
  
  For example we have a network with a small number of producers. If a line caries a minimum use of 1 MW past a location then there is no reason why a max 1 MW solar, or wind, or wave, or geothermal etc power plant couldn’t be built their. It doesn’t need infastructure to be built for it.
  Here in NZ you have to have Large MW output to be even considered to be allowed to supply to the network.
  No matter your opinion on alternative power production. What is happening here is anti competitive behavour.
  We pay more because we restrain innovation. Enabling it is different vs subsidising it.
  If it is subsidised we pay but stifle true innovation.
  If it’s enabled we pay nothing and the tech must stand on its own feet economically to exist.
  
  We are underperforming compared to our potential.

    Uh yeah, economics mate. Solar power is uneconomic. The sun is the solar systems largest nuclear reactor, and the PV systems is basically akin to building a reactor on earth, sending it to the moon, then pointing a PV system in the general direction to collect the power.
    
    By the time the vissible light and other energy waves from the sun hit earth they have dissipated to almost nothing. Then that small residual heat energy in combination with the tidal forces of the moon create our weather patterns etc..etc…
    
    Its simply more effective to either use nuclear power directly, or burn naturally generated hydrocarbons.

Am I the only one that thinks that we should encourage accountability and behaving in safe ways in our youth? Or heaven forbid, an attempt to think things through and not cause danger to yourself or others?

If not, then why are a team of kids who went deep into a cave, with not a thought for getting lost or stuck or whatever, heralded as near heros? One man lost his life because of their risky behaviour and ill-considered actions.

Do I blame the kids? No I blame the parents of the kids, the guardians who were with them and the desperate to appear relevant news media. This is typical media whitewashing in much the same way is done to push the dangerous virtue signalling for Pike River entry, at which bad money is being thrown after more bad money. Little good will come of it.

  The boys teacher intended for three hours for both in and back. The cave slopes downward at the start then upward, then all over the place.
  Rain was not predicted. It quickly sank from the mountain surface and covered the lower parts of the cave . They were forced inward to a higher position. The rescue position was well further in by necessity. The man in charge kept the boys in a very good emotional frame work.
  We do have a saying over here called > This is Thailand < a bit casual but it is meant to cover a multitude of sins.

    A huge statue of Maui or other mythic voyager would be OK, Colossus of Rhodes style, so long as it wasn’t too stylised. Medieval Polynesians were incredible navigators, went everywhere from Sub Antartic isles to South America to Christmas Island and Madagascar. Worthy of celebration.

I wonder if the victims (a man and a woman) are a couple of tourists, or are recent immigrants unfamiliar with the West Coast beaches, or are a local couple?

Do you think that the Ministry of Tourism could do more to alert tourists to hidden killers in this country, such as the West Coast beaches and sand. I recall a case (a few years ago) where newcomers unfamiliar with West Coast sand had driven a 4WD at high speed, then lost control when they ran into a patch of soft sand.     I was referring to the perception gap between: a) the image of “Clean, Green and Overflowing with Wonderful Nature” that the Ministry of Tourism promotes and b) the unreported dangers of West Coast beaches, sand, the risk of hypothermia in cold, wet NZ bush, etc.
    
    Health & Safety should demand, for example, that all visitors from countries with coral lagoons be instructed that it is highly dangerous to attempt to wade out into the West Coast surf (due to rips and the freezing water).
    People from nations where tearing along the sand in a 4WD is socially acceptable must be informed (in no uncertain terms) that NZ wet West Coast sand is a guaranteed vehicle-flipper.
    
    How can the NZ government expect to put warning labels on soda pop but fail to inform visitors of the health and safety issues of the Kiwi environment?

        I find the West Coast beaches humbling and majestic. It is absolutely wonderful to walk along the beach and be the only person there.

        Risk is relative Odakyu-sen. In the mid 80s four of us formed a partnership to develop a forestry block out near the Wairarapa Coast. For my part I spent three years on a D7 carving access tracks up & along ridges & using a roller off the winch to crush the scrub. When I wasn’t doing that I was spreading screened river run to give all weather access.
        
        It was dangerous work but like anything you pays your money & takes your chances.
        
        The fun part was towards the end when we were trying to sell the block. Various investor groups were interested & some wanted site inspections.
        
        Watching Queens St farmers sitting in & on the back of the Hi Lux turn green while I was chauffeuring them up & down the tracks made it all worth while. 🙂

  There are numerous resources available in PI and Asian languages warning of dangers around our coasts and waterways.

  What do you expect from Australia and their kangaroo court system. For 30 years not one person appointed to serve as judge in Tasmania was legally appointed. Therefore all their trials were invalid.
  
  The State of Tasmania maintained the ‘rulings’ reardless of the fact that none of their judges had any legal powers to precide over trials, as paying reperations and issuing retrials would have been ‘inconvenient’.
  
  Then we had the state services just ignore the electoral requirements in australia for citizenship, it was embarassing to find out that many of their MPs were not appointed lawfully. Ironically they didn’t review the legislation to determine which acts of parliament were valid and invalid as a result.
  
  Of course if you can make one exception for the law, you can make another, and another, and another, and sooner or latter it isn’t what the law says that matters, it is what the judge feels is important.

A couple of days after calling up Spark about billing, I got this automated e-mail requesting that I participate in a Spark service satisfaction survey.
At the start of the online survey, I was given the option of language selection. There were 5 options: English, Maori, Hindi, Chinese and Korean.

I would love to know the percentage of Maori-option language selection and online completion in Maori of the questionnaire.

If no-one actually uses the Maori option, then why have it? Why not a Farsi, Urdu or Arabic option instead?

Seriously. Why bother with the Te Reo option if it is never used? (Maybe there is a clause in the Treaty of Waitangi about mandatory language options in on-line surveys?)

      Japan will deal with its problems on its own terms and will continue to be Japanese.
      
      If New Zealanders had a stronger sense of national identity, I don’t think that that they would give in so easily to cultural and ethnic replacement.
      But then, if you don’t value something, you will not worry much when you have lost it.
      If it’s any consolation, although the older generation can remember when times were different, the youth will know no different. Life goes on…

        It’s a bit laughable to complain about a weak sense of New Zealand national identity compared with Japan – an ethnostate for millennia.
        New Zealand’s national identity is an uneasy amalgam of cultures that still struggles to deal with concepts such as colonialism and nationhood.
        So, vising Japanese might look down their noses and think New Zealand should be more like Japan. Good luck to their chauvinism.

        Oh, the New Zealanders had a very strong sense of cultural and ethnic identity, but that didn’t prevent them suffering cultural and ethnic replacement to the extent that one of the replacements could comment on Kiwiblog that their language had no place in New Zealand.

        Very Western, though Milky. The English language is dominant, and NZ has English law, broadly an English Parliamentary system with German-type voting, English-style education, an English cadastral system imperative for land ownership and transfer, American popular culture, Western science, British type military, Western agriculture, and Western trade (yes, there was a small pre-colonial trade with Australia in agriculture as well as exports of flax and human heads, but the mechanism of trade – from container shipping down to bills of exchange and letters of credit – is Western).
        
        Apart from provisions built into the Parliamentary system for Maori, and the Waitangi Commission to sort out Treaty difficulties, Maori culture in NZ is largely ceremonial, and the Maori language keeps slipping towards a status of being a minor relic.

        The video about Japan that Odakyu-sen links to in his 7.42 post is very interested about 4min 30sec in on GDP per capita.
        
        It states there is almost no correlation between population growth and GDP per capita.
        
        I wish the politicians and journo’s who babble on about pure GDP would look at this.

    No it won’t Psycho Milt, Japan has a very stringent immigration policy, they have decided to keep Japan as a Japanese country for the people of Japan.
    
    So there won’t be any big changes in ethnic composition in Japan, unlike in NZ where we are comitting Ethnic Suicide demographically speaking.

      No psychomilt, Maori did very well, in exchange for selling those lands that they ‘owned’ or had ‘territorial exclusivity’ over to anglo-saxons they benefited from a 2,000 year leap forward in technology, morals and human rights, they gained access to a much larger job market and global trade.
      
      Plus anglo-saxons ended canibalism, and slavery and animalism, and brought rule of law, an end to tribal warfare, and christanity to these people.
      
      Why if we could find a group of people 2,000+ years technologically ahead of us, like a interstellar space fairing peoples that were going to treat us in accordance to the principals of common law and human rights, and they werent going to steal our stuff and genocide us, and they were willing to provide the same benefits that Anglo-Saxons provided to maori then that would be fantastic.
      
      Who wouldn’t sell useless space rocks for a 2,000+ year leap forward in technology, access to an interstellar jobs and goods and services markets? Technology which is so sufficently advanced that it appears as if it were magic!

    What other language has a strange name not related to its people.
    Eg Hungarian is spoken by Hungarians.
    But Maori speak Te Reo.
    
    Its a small language with a very limited vocabulary and should be kept as a ceremonial language (if that)
