Did I see over the weekend that the government had not extended and invitation to Todd McClay to the signing of the CTPPA.
If so, doesn’t this show the vindictiveness and pettiness of the CoL, and in particular David Parker.

      Funny holysheet but they have invited Kelsey? The wrap around text that accompanies the CTTPP lists the 20+ issues put aside remain in the original txt. They seem to have done this in cased the USA decide to join. Many will think they are unlikely to region this agreement but instead maybe establish a trading arrangement between the group and the USA. Both Parker and the old drunk have spun a line that the USA might re-join simply to try and deflect from their failure to really gain any changes to the original.

    The words “hatred” and “fear” must be used by the Left according to their world view (irrespective of the truth).
    
    If “hatred” like “racism” is predicated on a perceived position of power in society, then the Left must find it impossible to conceive of whites (i.e., the “power holders” in Sweden) being capable of fear. In the minds of the Left, such disclosures by people like Springare can only give rise to hatred.
    
    Conversely, the reporting of skinhead violence towards “immigrants” in Sweden can only cause “fear” among immigrant communities there.
    
    Rather than “inciting racial hatred” I think Springare was “inciting racial fear.”

  And not just economic prosperity – our towns and cities are more vibrant and exciting because of migration

Palmerston North speedway is now under siege by Fairfax Filth supporting some losers’ claims that it is a family event and they will not allow prams. Being lefties, they must realise it is the result of health and safety regulations, and also who in their right mind is so ignorant as to push those bloody things around a speedway where there is an amount of danger. Seems Fairfax Filth want to assist doing the same as what happened to Wellington’s Sevens . . . “Think of the Children” is becoming more detestable by the day. But of course, it is a sport dominated by white males . . . it must go!

  They also banned the bringing in of food a few years ago, no doubt to bolster the royalties they receive from the hot dog and chip vendors. They was such an uproar that they had to back down and allow patrons to bring in home-prepared food, or snacks like chippies, but takeaways like fish and chips, Maccas, pizzas and K-Fried remain on the verboten list.

So what does South Africa’s change of President really mean? Part 3

The Zulus

South Africa has countless tribes and groupings and it would be pointless to go into details of every one, since most of them are of little consequence in the grand scheme of things. However, it would be foolish to ignore the Zulus.

The Zulus are the most powerful single group of people in South Africa and have been for generations. Since they have no written language we are a bit limited in what we know, but they have likely been the dominant tribe of the region for over 500 years. As my late father said to me somewhere around 1975: “We all live here at the pleasure of the Zulus.”

The Zulus are over 12 million of the South African population of about 58 million. They have a king who still has considerable influence. About 4 million Zulus live on the Ingonyama trust lands which are governed according to tribal laws with the king at the head. People do not own their lands but instead pay rent to the trust (ie. the king). While this is technically called rent, it is probably better considered tribute, in line with the traditional thinking on the matter. Quite similar to the European feudal systems of the middle ages.

Most Zulus in the tribal areas, and likely even most who live outside those areas, still regard themselves as subjects of the king first and foremost. Thus, the king has considerable force at his disposal and could start a civil war by lifting his little finger. And, as mentioned before, nobody does warrior better than the Zulus.

It is also worth considering the history that brought them to this point. When black people (the Nguni) first migrated south, they brought with them cattle and their traditional crops of low-yield sorghum. Agriculture was low output. Population growth (and essentially tribal power) were very much limited by how much food people could raise using traditional methods. Then, mid 1500s, the Portuguese imported maize, beans and sweet potatoes (kumara) to Mozambique – within easy trading distance of the Zulus. This increased food output by a factor of 5 or so. That lead to rapid population growth in the areas where these new crops grew well – particularly in the areas inhabited by the Zulus and Xhosa.

The Zulus also had large estuaries etc allowing fishing which added food to their diet – giving them a further leg up the power ladder.

Increased food supply brings both population increases and the ability to direct part of the population to other purposes. In the case of the Zulus, that was directed into their military. This allowed them to build an empire that expanded from a small tribe to absorbing others until they has a small empire. The size of that empire was limited by technological limits: no roads, no wheel, no horses, no written language and no arithmetic.

That increased population also drove the need for more of the best land which triggered the Mfecane in the early 1800s – a period of approximately 20 years during which over a million people (50% of the South Africa population at the time) were killed or driven off. The domino effect of this extended far into Africa. A pretty good score for an army with no wheel, horses or other technology.

European settlers had been in the Cape (1500 km from the Zulu action) since the 1650s, but in the 1830s – around the end of the Mfecane – both boer and English settlers started arriving in the areas the Zulus controlled.

Even though we are talking of population increases, we’re still only talking of a two or three million people almost all living in the preferred lands of the Zulus and the Xhosas (which they still inhabit today). A family – say 5 or 6 people – could only till a very small area of land by hand (no ploughs) and needed a small area for grazing etc. Further, they would not want to live too far from their extended family or friends (within yelling distance) for security. Let’s just say they family actually used 2 hectares. There would have been half a million families occupying a million hectares throughout Zululand and Transkei. In other words, far less than 10% of the KwaZulu/Transkei region would actually have been in use.

Thus, when the Zulu king gave a vast tract of Kwa Zulu Natal (not the best bits of course) to the Brits for saving his life, land was not viewed with the value it has today. The same when the boers arrived and bought land in the north eastern areas of Natal.

So why would you want a boer or a Brit in your region? Remember that there was no legal system of ownership and police forces etc back then. You only owned what you could hold onto by force. Therefore security from raiding parties was an ongoing issue and having people with guns and horses helped stabilise the peace.

The king is a busy man. He had about a hundred wives and other duties. Having the brits in the area to help control the situation would have been seen as a huge plus.

The same would apply to weaker tribes in the north too. Having the boers and their horses and guns would be seen as a good way to protect against raids from stronger tribes.

Getting a bit long, so I will pick up the story of the Zulus in the modern day tomorrow, if there continues to be interest.

    pfft – no where does he claim to being a “complete expert”. You can check his accuracy easily through Google anyway (which I do to various comments here that sound a bit off, often with disappointing results ? ). I don’t treat cmm’s comments as gospel, but still find them interesting.
    
    More generally, there are plenty of people with useful knowledge of peoples and places who weren’t actually members of the group. Some universities have whole departments of Classics, for example 🙂 .

      In the 1930s the late great Dr Danie Craven of South African rugby fame gained the first of his three doctorates (all earned!) in Anthropology, a thesis on the native peoples of the Western Cape, I think. And he proved instrumental in finding ways to influence apartheid-government policy so that
      
      1. First Maori and Pacific Islanders could play in South Africa
      
      2. Then South African blacks and whites could first play on the same field
      
      3. Then South African rugby was integrated at all levels
      
      4. Then, on the release of Nelson Mandela, he flew to Zambia to meet with the then-still-banned ANC, thus preempting the Nationalist government’s decision to dismantle apartheid in full.
      
      Doc Craven was the greatest rugby man who ever lived, and worked tirelessly and as opportunity allowed from the time he first arrived in New Zealand as a player in 1937 (when he struck up genuine and long-lasting friendship with Guide Rangi of Whakarewarewa and her family) until the first fully-integrated All Black team toured South Africa in 1970, and then Errol Tobias toured with the 1981 Springboks, to ensure the best All Black and Springbok teams played one another.
      
      Not that you would hear much of that perspective about Craven in 1981 or the boycott-busting years of the rest of the 1980s. Nonetheless, he was a giant, and yes, his knowledge of other cultures and peoples other than his own gave him an expertise to bring those people together, often in spite of prevailing social and political systems.

    Unlike you, I actually lived in South Africa for 30 years, including 18 years living in Kwa Zulu Natal – where the Zulu people come from.
    
    I grew up speaking Zulu some of the time and playing with Zulu kids. I don’t claim to be an expert, but I might just know a teeny-tiny amount about some of this.
    
    I also spent time in Pondoland (Xhosa) and could see the difference between the way the tribes behave.
    
    If you have read anything else I have written, you will know that I have never tried to justify apartheid.
    
    Your last sentence about 1960 makes no sense at all. Either that or I am far too stupid to understand it.
    
    Lastly, for your education, there are no “white south africans” as a group. The whites are tribal too: in many ways Afrikaners are very different to English speaking people and even the difference between Transvaal Afrikaners in the North and those in the Cape is huge.

Over coffee in the village at the weekend the question was asked as to who voted for Winston Peters, silence, then admitted by a few who are Grey Power members they did.
But all said they would never do it again but were unsure who to vote for next – certainly not Cindy or Greens. National ???
Somebody said that if Winston was not there and Tabetau, being from Rotorua, was leader they would reconsider NZF but only if the publically agreed before the election to work with National.
Until such time NZF would remain well below the 5% whilst Winston was there but could get up without him.

      In response to your last question it is just the same approach. They are free to post but must also accept the tick ratio they attract mostly from a silent majority.

        I disagree.
        The first instances of personal abuse came when I originally commented on KB about the NZ Temperature record.
        I would argue that I was sucker-punched.
        I had read the comments policy here and took it to mean that personal abuse/attacks would not be tolerated.
        As I am not going to offer back abuse, I have two courses of action:
        Accept the abuse and defamatory smears and stop commenting on climate science,
        or keep posting on topics that interest me and identify the abuse as abuse.
        For the life of me, I don’t see what my reproductive status has to do with NZ’s climate.

I watched the Sunday doco about Coral Burrows who was murdered by her mother’s boyfriend despite her father contacting authorities.

The mother would not front and in a statement failed to accept any responsibility. She just said if she had known Coral was in danger she would have done something.

When a woman makes a claim against a father it is much more likely to be investigated than when the father makes a complaint.

Children are still being murdered by mother’ s boyfriends.

        To that list, I would add lack of self-worth.
        I expect she had been told countless times that she was useless.
        
        You are one of the only males I have ever come across who has correctly identified that some vulnerable women (solo mums) become prey to other men.
        Whether these predatory men think that women on their own are easy meat or can be an unpaid house-keeper, I’m not sure; but there seem to be plenty of them about.

      Just how do you protect yourself from someone who is prepared to inflict injury, up to death, when you have no friends and nothing – and children to look after? It’s not quite as easy as, “Oh, I’ll go and live on my own.” As many dead women could testify.
      
      Many years ago I met some American women over here talking about domestic abuse. They had a saying – “Men beat their wives; women kill their husbands.” And then they go to jail for more punishment. That’s because it’s very difficult, if not impossible, to get out – safely. It’s all very well to talk about protection orders but paper isn’t a protection against physical assault.
      
      I’d give this woman points for leaving when she had the opportunity. Unfortunately, the kids had to be left behind – as they generally are in society. But she had the moral fibre not to kill her husband, despite that being the most rational action to take for self-preservation and that of her children. In the meantime, don’t tell me a whole lot of other people didn’t know what was happening and leave her and the children in the situation. They have no moral fibre at all and should have been jailed with him.

        But remember this woman kept going back to the guy. That must have been frustrating for folks who tried to help earlier on.

      I’m playing Devil’s Advocate here because I completely agree with you.
      
      But you can’t deny the feminist movement which has preached for years that women must put their own needs first, including to be able to provide appropriate care for their children. This was augmented, even, in the Refuge movement where children always came second – and it continues in social services now.
      
      I realise that such situations are a matter of degree but social movements never take note of ‘degrees’ and always talk in absolutes. So NZ mothers have been told ad nauseum to put themselves and their relationships first and their children last.
      
      It’s a mistake because if it’s not ‘fit’ for children, it’s not ‘fit’ for them.

        Anne in some ways both men and women must put their relationships first. Children can be very jealous when the custodial parent takes a new partner – even a very good one. They will sometimes try and destroy a relationship.
        
        However, putting a relationship first does not mean the one should allow a partner to abuse children. It gets even more difficult with a blended family. They are no easy answers to new relationships aside from not allow children to be abused.
        
        Hoskings and Hawesby deserve credit for how they make their marriage work.

    True KevOB but it is not seen as charity to the recipient however it does have a strong influence on the mind set of the them. More people in such situations expect it to be bottomless and just keep flowing in.
    Living in a third world country where 10% of GDP comes from off shore workers sending money home to family embeds an expectation in much of the population. Seeing it first hand it is amazing that when their circumstances change they never seem to share/give much at all.

  Truly scary oldpark as so many of us watch on as these incompetent COL members say so much and do nothing then proceed to spread their havoc on the International front.
  The storm damage is at the extreme level since it is all on the surface making it so much more visible. Local funds and resources to repair and recover are very limited since it is across a lot popular tourist areas that are sparsely populated. It also means very limited political representation with so few covering so much of the South Island.
  Added to this is the results of saltwater contamination now being witnessed by so much dead ground, flora and trees. At least we can see that disaster is the one event to be sure to see true gender balance.

So Winston has decided to pull his pet hate the Chinnese to save his Party and con NZ’ers by stating that NZ and Australia have to up their game in the Pacific and gain back the respect they had in the past. Who does this self serving prick think he is and what has the Pacific Islands done for NZ apart from taķing aid and trying to belittle our PM when things don’t go their way. We should be using that money to solve our so called Housing Problem, Poverty and inequality before looking after other Nations especially if these problems are the evil of our country with the Coalition trying to remind us daily of this being the reason they are the Government to fix these important issues. But getting back to Peters he obviously believes this Policy will lead to the return of his voters and being the Messiah he is destained to Lead the Pacific.

  Haven’t you noticed the campaign by TV1 news to raise awareness that Tonga doesn’t have kidney dialysis treatment available for their growing problem of their overweight population. The patients believe the Lord will solve their health problem and don’t take responsibility to lose weight.
  
  NZ has their own long list of citizens requiring kidney dialysis. Watch out for an announcement from the travelling roadshow about NZ funding a Tongan dialysis machine.

      Right cmm but surely you have noticed that things are only a problem if the COL say they are otherwise it is all the fault of the previous Government.
      It something that always seems to be clutched at during OQT as every response ends with their standard insults which might have actually come from The Standard. Or they opt to quote their policy intentions to avoid an answer while Speaker just lets them prattle on.

      There are some that do not consider our prisons to be much of a punishment, certainly not as much of a deterrent as those of some other jurisdictions.
      
      If given a choice, I wonder which one he would choose. Yes to the law and philosophy too, sometimes the tenets are in conflict. One is seemingly more objective than the other.

        Anything is possible, Rachael. But none of what you’ve written addresses the point I raised. Maybe I wasn’t clear.
        If all foreigners convicted of a serious crime like murder in NZ were simply deported immediately (with no further direct consequence), wouldn’t some people complain that they’d gotten off lightly? And, in some cases they would have.
        How exactly can one know if being sent back will be worse than prison here (and how would you write a law to cover that)?
        At the moment, having them serve the time for their crime and then deporting them seems the most workable, albeit imperfect, course of action.

  The thought processes of people on bail for serious offences can lead to destructive behaviour. If they think they will ultimately be incarcerated or deported, many of them seem to become destructive while on bail. It is a huge problem with men who bash their wives. It looks like Labour has solved the problem of how to recreate the slum housing of 1960’s/ 70’s latest update on 1 and two bedroom modular prefab housing that will be able to be put together in days. They can be erected on many properties that have large gardens and could save our homelessness with many large constructing companies including Fletchers looking at the incentives and whether it would be viable. I thought Winston and Jacinda said their is no place for capitalism in a country they would Lead.

Someone needs to start asking questions here. Like, why wasn’t the new bright-line test introduced earlier? If it was such a high priority before the election, why wasn’t it addressed sooner by the incoming govt (ie, before Christmas)?

Or were they holding off until Ardern bought her new house?

  Main homes are exempt from any “speculation tax”.
  So unless they buy and sell 2 or 3 times within the now 5 year period they will be exempt from any tax on gains they make through appreciation of the property value.

I predict that, despite the James and Golly Q and A in Parliament last week telling us how wonderful the census will be, the census will be a massive flop. Loads of people haven’t got forms here yet, a lot of my district contains the socially deprived who don’t have access to a computer and who probably can’t be bothered ringing up to get a form. I expect our district’s population will plummet accordingly!!

Dont forget its Census Day tomorrow. I suspect around 5% at least wont complete the form. Many because its on line and they dont have access to our understand computers.

So the population as per the Census could be 250,000 plus less than the population clock at the Stats website.

Of course we will never know. The Pollies and civil servants will cover it up or Cindy will say its the homeless that make up the shortfall and use this as an excuse to raise more taxes to “fix the poverdy”.

  No I don’t think that is the reason. If you can do facebook and cat videos then you can do the census.
  
  Rather there is little motivation: “What is in it for me eh?”
  
  Nor is there any obvious repercussions. In the old system you had people drop off the forms then come back and ask for them back. That surely intimidated quite a few people into actually filling in the forms that would not have otherwise.
  
  Now they will just say they never got anything in the post so it isn’t their fault.
  
  I’m expecting a flop, but I hope I’m wrong.

Dumbing down at Auckland Council. Akd Council are looking for the public to support their long term plan (10 year budget) the local boards priorities and 3 new taxes. But the last plan (done 3 years ago) they gave us prices and breakdowns. For example the local boards would say their top projects and the expenditure etc. This year nothing just words. Their is no accountability. Re their stormwater tax $70 per household, they give no breakdown of how much it generates and the projects it will go to and how much those projects will cost. Instead they have a nice animated video showing why we need the project but no details. The video symbolises everyhting that is wrong with Auckland Council whose PR team is on fire making fun graphics and spin, but their is no numbers or breakdown showing what they are proposing. Environment tax, they make vague comments like $70 will stop Kauri dieback spreading with 30% certainty. Really. What projects are you proposing to spend the money on. Surveillance cameras and security is the main expenditure from what I heard. But would be nice to actually get a breakdown of the projects and prices. Please stop treating us like we are stupid Auckland Council.

  (1) Ms Bright’s factual statements concerning Council affairs and its probity were, in general, not truthful or accurate.
  
  (2) Ms Bright’s criticisms of Council affairs and Council probity were personally reckless and crazy.
  
  (3) Ms Bright is not worthy of the public’s trust when it comes to information about Council affairs or Council probity.
  
  (4) Ms Bright’s recklessness with facts and actions based upon inaccurate facts is costing (harming) all Aucklanders.
  …
  Ms Bright claims general damages of $250,000, and aggravated and punitive damages of $100,000.
  
  The judge regarded you as a person with diminished credibility
  
  In my view a reasonable juror would note first that Ms Bright was seriously in default in payment of her rates. The juror would also probably accept the proposition in the Press Release that Ms Bright’s refusal to pay her rates was, to some extent, an action taken at expense of those Auckland ratepayers who were paying their rates. The hypothetical juror might reasonably conclude that the Council was doing no more than taking what was clearly a “last resort” step in discharging its statutory duties to levy and recover rates from ratepayers.
  
  The judge said Mr Town won – a full hearing wasn’t necessary
  
  In my judgment of 10 March 2016 I held that the Press Release was issued on an occasion of qualified privilege. That was sufficient to provide Mr Town with a complete defence to Ms Bright’s claims, subject only to the question of whether Ms Bright’s claims of ill will/improper taking of advantage were reasonably arguable. I have now found that those claims, as articulated in the amended s 41 notice, are not reasonably arguable.
  
  In those circumstances Mr Town must succeed on his qualified privilege argument, and that is sufficient to dispose of Ms Bright’s claims. As Mr Town’s application for summary judgment has been based entirely on an affirmative defence which I have held must succeed, summary judgment in his favour is the appropriate remedy: this is not a case for striking out Ms Bright’s statement of claim. I enter summary judgment for Mr Town accordingly.

“Further concerns about the camp have come to light over the weekend,” Professor Tony Ballantyne, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Humanities confirmed.

The meeting follows Herald revelations of excessive drinking, jelly wrestling and nudity at previous years’ law camps.

The university is investigating after a former student, who did not want to be named, said she attended a second-year law camp in 2012, which descended into “an American fraternity house”.

Meanwhile, a former University of Otago law student has claimed members of the law faculty have acted inappropriately towards women for years.

“Otago Law has been a . . . smorgasbord of young, impressionable women for men in the faculty,” said the woman in a message to a third party following a Herald on Sunday investigation.

The woman agreed to allowing the Herald to use her comments albeit anonymously.

”Even if relationships weren’t consummated, there were a lot of inappropriate conversations, caresses and carry-ons,” she said.

Wellington to spend $1m on city’s begging problem by creating beggar ‘activities’

Wellington’s ratepayers could be about to write a million dollar cheque to help fix the city’s begging problem.

In an effort to clean up its streets, Wellington City Council is proposing to set aside $100,000 per year, over the next ten years, to provide “purposeful day activities for people on the street”. I wonder what sort of “purposeful day activities” Wellington City Council has in mind. After all, the more time beggars spend on purposeful day activities, the less time they have to collect money from passersby.
