Winnie is having a few drinks with his mate Pete down at the Viaduct. Well into the second bottle of Glenmorangie he pukes down the front of his shirt – looks at Pete and says “Jan’sh gonna kill me when she shees I got sho hammered I shpewed all over my new shirt !”

Pete pulls a $10 note out of his wallet, slips it into Winnie’s shirt pocket and says “just tell Jan that a drunk vomited all over you and gave you $10 to dry clean your shirt.”

Jan meets him at the door, and Winnie tells her that a drunk had vomited on him and given him $10 to have his shirt cleaned. Jan reaches into his pocket – and says “but this is $20 not $10 !”

“Ah yeah” – replies Winnie – “that’s because he shat my pants as well !”

He needs to – very publicly – tell all those attending Charter Schools (and teaching at them) to completely disobey the Joke Government and just carry on as normal.

Take a stand Simon. Encourage civil disobedience. Politics is about opportunity – here is an opportunity.

This is actually the only way National can de-legitimize these pigs. I can just see Chippy’s little face; he wouldn’t know what to do, it’s against the rules.

Well these arseholes have already chucked the rulebook out the window as is being amply illustrated on a daily basis.

Today in Trade Me there are 249 dwellings for sale in Tauranga at under $550,000.
Why pay over $650,000 after a lucky ballot having to wait years for them to be built.
How many have been started under this scheme – none yet – the first ones some approx 30 were started in the middle of last year so none have yet been started as there are no available builders.

It makes me wonder how many can actually get a deposit & afford the repayments, if the bank will lend them the money of course?

I suspect that most will fail to meet the criteria but are sucked in by Twyford’s bedtime stories

Those Kiwifail houses are going to be valued at $1M within eighteen months of purchase, perpetuating the same cycle that locked the generations following mine out of housing ownership. Demand is greater than supply in the Kiwifail scenario. The fundamentals are totally wrong. You’ve got to have a meaningful reform of the RMA and push out the city boundaries. The lefties might tout ‘urban sprawl’, as a reason not to but that is bullshit. Suburbia suits a certain segment of the population, think the Prime Minister’s demographic, but the young and some of the footloose Empty Nesters will prefer apartment living. Or Martinborough.

  I’ve owned property before – but always in a trust.
  So I can now classify myself as a first home buyer.
  I will be pleased to be selected from the ballot to get one of these KiwiBuild homes – it will be a great home for 3 years before I flick it off for nice cap gain (notwithstanding the tax I will have to pay).
  I may even choose to rent it out – and become one of those slum landlords, but I’ll be very selective on the type of tenant I choose.

Still boils down to the fact that National did a shit job with the housing issue.

They didn’t get local council sorted so land is freed up quicker

They didn’t get the required trades sorted so we had the man power to get the houses built in reasonable time frames and at a fair price.

They didn’t get the issue with overpriced building materials sorted

They did add a lot of extra HS/compliance costs

They did allow immigrants to flood into the country which overwhelmed our already stressed and small building industry.

National had nine years to get this under control but basically did nothing and we’re now in a situation where a tiny little house on a handkerchief sized section is getting raffled off at 650k which is apparently cheap!

It’s complete bullshit.

    Builders don’t have time or interest in training apprentices, which is why we’re in the current situation, people are so busy they just want staff who can turn up and get the job done.
    Also young guys aren’t what they used to be like, where they could stay focused and concentrated on the job without getting bored.
    Long term training has to go back to the situation where the government did the lion share of apprenticeships; it’s the only way the skill shortage will get sorted
    The only way they can do that is if they turn housing corp into a fully-fledged building division which can then be used to train people in all the different construction trades.
    We get state houses and we train people at the same time, You’d set up in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington.
    
    People do their 4 years or whatever length their apprenticeship may be and then leave and enter the private sector.
    
    The building materials is another situation where unless you mandate price caps and all sorts of shit solutions, you won’t be able to do much given NZs size.
    
    Why aren’t we importing framing timber? Why are we stuck with pine?
    Or plaster board there’s far superior products out their than Gib, but Fletcher’s has got the market completely tied up so it’s near impossible to get alternatives.

      I dont think you know fuck all about the trades.
      Simple fact is that every trade has a significant amount of labouring type brain dead work. That is where you start the munters, after a few months of them being able to turn up on time and remember what they were doing yesterday hopefully they will be able to think enough to do some basic tasks unassisted and after a year might even be trusted to go to a job without a bloke watching over them.
      After a couple of years they are full of themselves and think they can run a job and after 3 or 4 years you are fighting to keep them because someone else has offered them big money because you are known for turning out good staff.
      Point being, you cant run a successful trade company unless you have staff at all levels. You certainly cant use a $65/hr tradie to do shit work and expect to win quotes.
      So no you cant have all the apprentices come out of a govt training factory.

        You can buy $250K houses in suburban Wellington, Palmerston North, Hawkes Bay, Dunedin, in fact everywhere except Auckland and Queenstown.
        Queenstown is an international tourist mecca and Auckland is our biggest city by far. The same affordability problem exists in Sydney, London, New York etc. even though much cheaper properties are available in other parts of those respective countries.
        Not sure if it can ever be fixed short of a financial meltdown (quite possible under this Government) which would dump the price of a house in Wainuiomata to $70K.
        Your first car doesn’t have to be a new BMW. Likewise your first house doesn’t have to be a trendy villa in Ponsonby.

  No govt can control housing prices unless they are a full blown communist state. NZ had an unforeseen bonus, from National’s prudent economic administration, thousands of Kiwis returning. That put pressure on housing along with speculative low interest finance and Chinese seeking to park their funds overseas.
  
  There would have been economic chaos if we had attempted to be able to meet the sudden demand. There is 5-10 lag to prepare building workers to suitable standards. Raw materials are not left sitting around either. Blaming the past government for the spike is ignorant. The real problem is that there is a problem and the COL are way out of their depth in their ability to cope with it. Expect the difficulties to be compounded.
  
  Sneaky consideration.. Is the COL approach really more rational than it appears? Is the proposal to offer the new houses to higher earning Aucklanders a way to securing more Auckland seats? Dumb but smart?

Why do house prices keep going up.
If I buy a new car, I will have lost thousands when I drive out the showroom door.
Then in 5 or 10 years times it will be worth hardly anything.
Yet a new house keeps going up in value, whereas it should do down in value, as it is wearing out, the carpets, the roof, the cladding etc etc.
I know the land goes up, but the house itself should go down.

  The value of his home is in the land, even though he has a very nice house built on it. The valuation of the house component has dropped from $150,000 in 2014 !

  because regulatory costs, wage rises, and building supplies cost inflation have caused rapid escalation in the cost of building houses, something like 30-40% increase in last 5 years.
  
  So house renovation or replacement costs have sky-rocketed lifting value of existing houses.
  
  This is a relatively easy thing for govt to fix (on regulatory side), and perhaps we need a 3rd ‘kiwihardware” competitor to break the building supplies cartel and bring the prices down.

Labour’s bad week is getting worse; Barry Soper doubles down on them, describing Kiwibuild as “middle class welfare”:

There are three poisoned chalices in government: health, housing and education – and two of them have just converged in a rather spectacular fashion.

Put health aside for the time being, Minister David Clark’s got enough on his hands squabbling with the nurses over their pay and conditions.

There was certainly no raising of the chalices of the other two in celebration, more like drowning their sorrows.

Phil Twyford was, in his words, opening the door to affordable home ownership, which was little more than a public relations exercise. He invited aspiring home owners to register their interest in a ballot for a KiwiBuild home which was a bit like taking a stab in the dark.

Far from opening the door, there’s still not a door to open – the first house has yet to make its appearance and over the next year just 1000 doors will beckon the ballots. And to qualify for a key to your phantom household you’ll have to be earning less than $120,000 if you’re a singleton and $180,000 if you have a partner.

Unfortunately it looks as though it’s shaping up to be a middle class housing programme where you’d certainly need that level of income to cope with the mortgage, with the current average expected to be $650,000 and rising.

As if that’s not bad enough, I just heard on the 9am that Twyford has admitted that Kiwibuild was never intended for those on low incomes.

Pardon me? I thought that was the whole aim of Kiwibuild; to make housing ownership available to everyone, not just the middle class and above. I would suggest Twyford and Labour are going to face huge push-back over this.

Kiwibuild was Labour’s flagship election policy. But the party is quickly finding that what sounded good in opposition in much harder to achieve in reality. As every day passes, the chances of the Labour-led coalition even making it to the 2020 General Election, let alone being re-elected, look slimmer.

Prices of housing doubles every 8 – 8 1/2 years. This is not a new thing – it’s been happening for hundreds of years globally.

Do an exercise – google the average house price in your city 50 – 60 – or 100 years ago, then double that price every 8 years until now. You will find the result is pretty close to the average price today. Don’t forget to allow for decimal currency changeover in the 60’s.

So if the average price in Auckland is around $1 million today, there is nothing stopping it being $2 million by 2026 ! Even my palatial $250,000 home on the West Coast will be worth $1/2 million at that time, and locals laugh when I suggest that will be the case.

The answer is to buy what you can afford – doesn’t matter where it is – just buy it and get on the property ladder ! And if you can’t afford to buy a $250,000 palace like mine on the West Coast, then start looking somewhere else !

    Try it with your town – get the average home price in – say – 1960, then compare it with average prices today – you will be in for a surprise !

  One more possible appeal, to the Supreme Court. However with the District Court having approved the extradition, and both the High Court and Court of Appeal upholding the original decision, his lawyers will have to come up with something new for the Supreme Court to even give him leave to appeal, let alone hear from him.
  
  The clock is now ticking a little more loudly for the Large German Gentleman. Hopefully it won’t be long before we say “Auf wiedersehen”.

    It is necessary in the interests of justice for the Supreme Court to hear and determine a proposed appeal if—

    (b)
    a substantial miscarriage of justice may have occurred, or may occur unless the appeal is heard; or
    (c)
    the appeal involves a matter of general commercial significance.
    
    Dotcom may rely on subs a or b but given volume the high court and court of appeal decisions in this matter the Supreme Court may say enough is enough.

    Think about it, it’s a highly political story and a lot of people have barrows to push on it. It’s also a highly sensitive case area which in this case also involves minors.
    
    It’s not particularly surprising that he’s been given interim (not permanent) suppression. Ensuring a fair trial without an accompanying political smear campaign via the internet is vital to ensuring the little creep gets punished fair and square.
    
    I’d suggest that when/if he is found guilty, the name will be revealed.
    
    20 bucks says it isn’t an MPs family member, but rather one of those arrogant “I’m so woke I should be allowed to hook up with you” types which you get in these lefty circles.

It would be difficult to come across someone with the ability to conflate and distort the truth more than Kyle MacDonald does in my opinion. I don’t know how ‘successful’ he is as a therapist but I think he both needs a new day job and should stay well away from social policy. Once again, some basic facts are largely true.

He quotes: “’There is no such thing as a baby, there is a baby and someone.’ – conveys the idea that psychologically babies don’t exist without a caregiver. In those early days there is only the child-parent pairing, and that is how it should be.” He also states “… there is no such thing as a “naughty child”. There is a distressed child and a family. This is not some wrongheaded way of dismissing destructive, dangerous or hurtful behaviours, [which he is doing] but we need to see that behaviour for what it is. Not a sign of an inherently “naughty” or BAD child, but expressions of distress that need to be understood, more often than not from a child that needs help.” That is, ‘distressed’ people act out – as children, as adults.

That ‘distress’ however can derive from almost unlimited forms from “death and loss, workplace stress, financial troubles, normal parental conflict” to absent parents (whether literally or figuratively), clear abuse and neglect, overly strict discipline, or no boundaries at all. And that continues to apply to adults in society.

Let’s be clear – there is no possible way of preventing ‘distressed’ children, as the result of parental behaviour/attitudes, and it starts at the moment of conception. If there is no guarantee of ‘undistressed’ children from the womb, by the mother (and by extension, the father), there really is zero chance of preventing it with anyone else, ever – especially the wider society.

Some children are luckier than others but there is no society which has ever existed without problem behaviour and they never will. It’s a given – for a multiplicity of reasons. The absolute best humanity can provide is mitigation and remediation, the latter covering all aspects from the deeply personal to the wider social. It’s a simple and unfortunate truth that humanity steadfastly will not even act to provide even the most basic protection to children in any case. And that’s without considering any biologically predetermined problems, especially in the brain. Because children (and adults) ‘act out’ when distressed MAY mean they are not ‘inherently bad’ – but some of them have been made that way.

Those displaying the ‘dark triad’ of Narcissism (grandiosity, pride, egotism, a lack of empathy; Machiavellianism (manipulation and exploitation of others, a cynical disregard for morality, and a focus on self-interest and deception); and Psychopathy (continuing antisocial behaviour, impulsivity, selfishness, callousness, and remorselessness) – are not just unpleasant; they’re actively dangerous, distressed or not. More to the point, like rabid dogs, they spread their dangerousness and distress to the rest of society, eagerly and at will.

I’ve dealt with psychologists about ‘distressed’ youth. One of the most revealing situations was when one of them reported on an assessment that nothing could be done. When I questioned that, he took the time to get a bit more precise – lots of things (not all) can be ‘done’ and/or problems ‘fixed’ given endless time and resources. That time and those resources are such that they are not, never have been, and never will be available to the extent which would be required to effect a meaningful improvement in individuals.

Kyle MacDonald says, “But what I wonder is, why is it at some nominal point we stop seeing children as influenced, and even harmed by their environments, and decide that as an adult they just need to be responsible, or we’ll lock them up, and in some cases throw away the key? If we accept there is no such thing as a naughty child, why do we still cling to the idea of a bad adult?”

Firstly, some children can be born with biological problems. Secondly, a society in which parents are always ‘good’ is not going to happen. Thirdly, no matter where the behaviour derives from, some child/adult behaviour is very ‘bad’. Fourthly, some behaviour is not only ‘bad’, it can’t be allowed to continue. The fact that it is allowed to continue just spreads the damage to everyone else, as do ‘bad’ parents inflicting avoidable harm on their children.

Where I do agree with him is in rejecting the idea of locking them up and throwing away the key. Some of them definitely should not be alive – in fact, I’d say after either animal torture, deliberate murder (particularly when associated with things like mutilation – like Clayton Weatherston) and perhaps after the ‘three strikes’, let alone after several dozen convictions for violent crime.

I can hear howls of atheistic rage (and some Christian), but I invite scrutiny of a teaching of the early Hebrews from Jonathan Sacks who I consider one of the wisest people on the planet. It isn’t only that it’s rational; it takes account of all very real humanity. It may be it should have limited and very careful use, given the inherent unreliability of the ‘justice’ system, but it deals with reality rather than morally bankrupt PC fantasy.

  The title says ‘how to deal with it’. As usual, the article doesn’t do that at all. It moralises at parents not to react severely to lying – of the usual PC variety that to value ‘honesty’ is ‘wrong’.
  
  At least it hopes they’ll bother to find out the ‘truth’ to ascertain just how damaging the lying might be or what it may be covering up. But, basically, it implies it’s normal for everyone to lie, particularly about ‘personal’ things (like alcohol & drugs???), parents should just let it go, and that children will develop some form of moral compass with no guidance.       This isn’t the first such fatal tasering in NZ.
      
      There was a 53-year-old man, sought for allegedly assaulting his father. The man sought was described at a subsequent court hearing as morbidly obese.
      
      He wouldn’t get out of his car. Ten police officers turned up, and the man was bitten by a police dog and sprayed with pepper spray – as well as being tasered twice.
      
      He “became unresponsive” after he fell out of the car and police were securing his hands behind his back, and died.
      
      Four police officers were charged, but found not guilty of assaulting the man.

The Acting Prime Minister has confirmed that he is claiming the new $700 Winter Energy Payment, available to anyone over 65.

Winston Peters says it’s about principle – he supports universal welfare, so he’ll take his slice. We say, if it is about principle, why not take the payment and donate it to charity? But the thought apparently hasn’t crossed his mind, so Mr Peters is set to enjoy his $700 annual payment as extra whiskey pocket money.

On top of a $334,000 taxpayer-funded salary, the $18,000 NZ Super, and a gold-plated Parliamentary super scheme (understood to be around $100,000 per year), taking up the extra payment which is meant to help those who can’t afford the winter power bill is brazen.
