UK Treasury’s predictions following Brexit vote

Claim: Recession by Christmas 2016
Reality: The United Kingdom has not had a single quarter of negative growth after the referendum, with no recession.

Claim: Tens of billions in extra borrowing
Reality: The latest official figures showing government borrowing has fallen to its lowest level in 16 years. Last month was the biggest surplus for any July since 2000 as receipts outstripped spending by £2billion

Claim: Lower productivity
Reality: Official figures confirm that output per hour worked is higher than where it was at the time of the referendum, with the last update from the Office for National Statistics revealing that it had grown by 0.9 per cent compared with the three months before. This marked its first rise since late 2016 and the biggest increase since the second quarter of 2011.

… seeing a pettern yet? ….

Claim: House prices falling by nearly a fifth
Reality: The average UK house price has risen over the last two years, the Office for National Statistics has confirmed, with it now at £228,384. That represents a rise of around 7 per cent

Claim: At least half a million more people out of work
Reality: The number of people out of work has fallen markedly since the referendum, from around 1.63 million to 1.36 million. Such a low level has not been seen in over 40 years. The unemployment rate fell over the same period from 4.9 to 4 per cent

Claim: Tens of thousands more young people out of work
Reality: Approximately 623,000 16-24 year olds were out of work around the time of the referendum. Two years on, the youth unemployment tally has fallen to 492,000. The youth unemployment rate has fallen over the same period, from 13.6 per cent to 11.3 per cent, marking its lowest level since records began.

Claim: Real wages shrinking
Reality: The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show that real wages not only rose in the month after the referendum, but they are 0.8 per cent higher than in June 2016.

Treasury boffins were wheeled out by the UK government to scare the masses. I believe our government is similarly guilty of strong-arming what was once an independent source of analysis.

    Brexit was an opportunity for U.K citizens to hold there MPs to account. So was Trump an opportunity to hold elected officials to account. Already Simon Bridges has been held to account for spending, Clear Curren, Maclomn Turnbull. The list of politicians globally who’ve failed to live out there terms is one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse behind pestilence. The Australian Liberal Party in particular, almost all of them have resigned from a ministers rial portfolio in the last 2 years. Do I think this political unrest will ease, probably not. Will politicians be able to tackle the big problems. Hope so.

    The pressure needs to go on her at question time. If she doesnt appear then we can have a pretty good idea its stress related leave. Bridges cant launch an effective inquiry but he can turn the heat up on the likely offender.

      The RNZ Focus on Politics programme on Friday had a one minute exert of an interview (at 7.10 into the programme) with the Gnome (who was in Vanuatu).
      
      Not only did he show himself to be a rank hypocrite (based on his own actions re. his Super overpayments and subsequent legal actions), but listening to the exert suggests:
      – Peters had been out to embarrass National and Bridges all along;
      – that he didn’t want the enquiry in the first place; and
      -he knows who the leaker was – which brings the focus on his caucus.
      
      Given he was Acting PM at the time, he would have seen Bridges expenses and he has past form at leaking and together with Marcroft’s past form on making an ass of herself doing the dirty for NZF ministers. It is my opinion Marcroft and Peter’s are the guilty parties.
      
      Does anyone know if she has had mental health issues?
      
      Although I doubt the person has mental health issues (strangely enough even some on the Standard on Friday were sceptical about the mental health line), I would suggest this was a ruse set up with O’Brien to get the enquiry close down. O’Brien ran a piece on NewsHub on Friday attacking Bridges and National for not caring about the mental health of the leaker (maybe she should have thought about that in the first place).
      
      Also, given the police have spoken to the guilty party especially in relation to their health, they did not recommend the enquiry be closed down, it was Mallard taking the decision himself, this suggests to me some other information came to him, making the continuation of the enquiry unwise from a CoL perspective.

    But pdm dumb enough to think it might win her favour with the silly little girl which the begs the obvious question. Is Curran involved in this hit job? It this the reason that she only lost one stripe instead of getting banished to the back bench after two serious wrongs? Is it like the Speaker with his method of giving and taking supplementary question? Who else might have influenced (told) the silly little girl to make a show of trying to be decisive?
    With it ending up such an open scab to be the stuff of much speculation it could well have been started by Curran who is not known for completing any dot images. It also leaves us wondering who told Mallard to kill the inquiry?

  Isn’t there something in the Speakers brief about impartiality? Mallard seems to have decided arbitrarily to stop the investigation because he thinks (but does not prove) that it is not a government MP. It’s a pity that Bridges cannot use the Waka Jumping legislation to boot the guilty part (assuming it is a National MP) without looking like a hypocrite.

With respect to Parliament being seen to capitulate to emotional blackmail on the faux claim of suicide threat from the leaker( recall Police report them as at no genuine risk!), the Nats should fight this tooth and nail. A motion of no confidence in the Speaker is in order IMO.?

  I would not rule that out. And I would expect Gerry Brownlee, as Shadow Leader of the House, to be demanding a personal and public apology from Mallard to every National MP and staffer for inferring that National leaked Bridges’ expenses, if it turns out National had no involvement.

Come [UK] election time, many of Jeremy Corbyn’s words will be read back to him, but none so poignant as these, delivered a year ago as President Maduro was sending in riot squads to squash anti-government protests:

“The issues in Venezuela are partly structural because not enough has been done to diversify the economy away from oil – that has to be a priority for the future.

But we also have to recognise that there have been effective and serious attempts at reducing poverty, improving literacy and improving the lives of the poorest people”.

    According to last week’s Porirua talkfest:
    -sadly too many Maoris commit crime; and
    – only Maoris know what it is like to be victims of crime.
    
    Maybe this is because they do the crime, get caught and then get banged up for their stupidity. Creating a situation of self inflicted stupidity and therefore a victim.
    
    As this has not happened to me, it is understandable that I don’t understand being a Maori victim of crime, but as I have been a victim of crime perpetrated by an ethnic national in a Pacific Island country, I know what it is like to be a victim of crime.

This should be a very strong case to get rid of the sexist law when if a man assaults a woman he can get double the penalty. This aggressive woman punches him in the face and does not even get charged. I wonder if she hit him so hard he was unable to protect the two women who appeared to be with him.

There is no logical reason why this law should remain. The reason it does is for votes. No political party believes in one law for all.

Pair suffered ‘extreme, unprovoked violence’

      Longknives: Sadly, no, it isn’t so. I am a Palagi who married into one specific PI culture (No names), and from close observation over some 40vyears can definitely confirm that some PI women are actually very, very strong and this fact, when coupled with almost insane and frequently instantaneous anger can create an individual who would make a berserker think twice. Such ‘Ladies’ are very violent, yet such is the pervasiveness of the ‘women are weak’ narrative that any male who has been on the receiving end of such violence will rarely go to the Police for fear of ridicule, a state which most adult PI males find unacceptable. Under such violence the whole family suffers, yet weirdly, these self-same women can actually be very good parents – until something (invariably of a minor nature) goes ‘wrong’ in their opinion, at which point it becomes a literal ‘Hell on earth’ for any ‘nearest and dearest’ who might be in the vicinity. Finally, and FWIW, it should be also noted that some island cultures tend to be more inclined towards violence than others, a fact reflected by the actions if some of their womenfolk. At the invitation of my Bank, I attended a Corporate Event last night in the city. The moment I entered the venue, I was approached by a lovely young red-head bearing a tray of bubbles and finger food.

As I reached for a savaloy, I stared down at her chest. She was wearing a name badge that said, ‘Hello – my name is Niamh’

In an attempt to strike up a conversation, I said, “That’s an unusual name, how do you pronounce it?”

She replied in a most wonderful Irish accent, “Exactly the same as the Prime Ministers baby’s – Neve.”

Trying to crack a bit of a joke, I said, “I find that hard to beliamh”

Turns out she was correct. Lucky I took two savs, never saw her again all night.

So I’m beginning to understand how NZ First voters must be feeling right now. See lately I’ve churned through many of the local fish and chip shops in the northern part of Christchurch. We order crumbed fish with our chips and get home, open it up and bloody heck it’s soggy battered fish and soggy chips. So I change outlets, it’s good for two months then they stuff up the order, so we change stores again. Now NZ First thought they were getting the good economy of National’s and a few extras for themselves. Instead they got a weaker economy, the same doctors, nurses, midwives, teachers and bureaucrats that were failing before the election but now are being paid even more for doing less just as hopelessly. Mental health is worse, the regions have been trashed, the oil/gas and mining sectors have been crushed, farming is under attack, business confidence is in a tail spin, only Northland is getting any infrastructure, the inflation figures are a complete fraud which is being perpetrated on old people with a fix income, petrol prices are through the roof, foreigners are still buying prime real estate and bottling water with no real levies. Doctors ain’t cheaper, yet foreigners are being given money hand over fist, the Navy just bought a second hand dinghy from Norway, how pathetic and embarrassing is that? The truth is NZ First voters got a big pile of soggy fish and chips.

First topic for today’s program: the Crime and Justice Summit. Serious topic, and one which attracts some thoughtful and brilliant minds. Professor Greg Newbold was what Mora likes to call “the talent” in this discussion…..

JIM MORA: Andrew Little’s Crime and Justice, uh, Summit looks, ah, set to recommend have fewer people in prison, you would infer, and the pulling of other levers, as the Prime Minister puts it, to both keep New Zealanders safe and better treat and rehabilitate those behind bars. And as we’ve discussed before, doing both at the same time will be the trick. But, Panelists, you are all for this?

REBEKAH WHITE: I really—

JOE BENNETT: All for what?

REBEKAH WHITE: You go, Joe.

JOE BENNETT: No sorry, I just want to clarify, what am I “all for”?

JIM MORA: Okay. All for both the extra rehabilitative approach and getting prison numbers down.

REBEKAH WHITE: Sounds great in theory. How do you DO that?

JIM MORA: Yes, we do ask that as well.

REBEKAH WHITE: Ha ha ha.

JOE BENNETT: Heh, heh, heh, heh….

MORA: Joe, do you have an opinion on it?

JOE BENNETT:Ummm. I’m no criminologist. It’s, it’s, it’s very hard, isn’t it. Ummmm, the, I remember going to a prison once, visiting a prison, ahem, Christchurch Men’s Prison, um, for, with regards to some columns that I had written, and I went there a couple of times. And it was an appalling place. Ummm, just the bottled testosterone there, it bristled, it was, it was, you felt soiled and horrible and horrid to be there, and you couldn’t imagine that it was rehabilitative. Ah, but I remember the Governor there saying to me, and he had far more reason to know than I would, he said that only two things rehabilitated the inmates in his prison, and one was they got God, and the other one was they got the love of a good woman. And I throw that out there for what it’s worth, I can’t verify it, I can’t vindicate it, but he sounded as though he knew what he was talking about.

MORA: Memorable.

JOE BENNETT: Mmmm.

MORA: Memorable. Criminologist, uh, Professor Greg Newbold isn’t at the Summit. We’ll seek his views on it shortly, but first actually we want to ask him something else from a listener. Greg, good afternoon.

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Hi. G’day.

MORA: Here’s the question for you, ahh, first up, uh. “Jim, at this summit are lots of people with all sorts of ideas on how to reduce recidivism. Lots of them make a living from this sector. Has anyone sat down and asked the criminals and prisoners what their ideas are as to what would motivate them to change their behavior and their lives? Is there any research like this?” asks Chris Malcolm. Greg, what’s the answer? What do prisoners want, what do they think will work?

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Aww, they wanna get outa jail. Mo– heh!— mosta them, ahhm, they would come up with ideas, they’re not criminologists, I mean, I was in jail myself, as you know—

MORA: Mmmm.

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: —for five and a half years, and um, awww, everybody had different ideas about what they’d do when they got out. The problem was that a lot of guys in prison say, when they’re in jail, they say, Ohhh, I’ve ruined my life, I shouldn’ta done this and I shouldn’ta done that, and when I get out I’m not going to make the same mistake, and then they get out and make the same mistake. You got 86 per cent recidivism in New Zealand over five years. So, ahhhhmmm, y’know, what prisoners say and what they actually do are two different things.

JOE BENNETT: Can I ask a question?

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Yeah. Please.

JOE BENNETT: Is there anywhere in the world which has, say, half that recidivism rate?

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Ah, no, not that I know of. The United States has got pretty much the same as us. Ummm, we’ve got a pretty high recidivism rate, I’ll tell you, the United States is around seventy-FIVE per cent—

JOE BENNETT: What about Scandinavian countries?

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Yeah I mean people talk about Sweden and so on but you never see any real data from it. I went to a prison in Sweden once, and it was a pretty nice jail, but you know, you’ve got a different social situation and a different demographic makeup over there, so you can’t compare them. You’ve got to compare apples with apples.

MORA: When you were IN jail—

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Mmm.

MORA: —did you get an inkling of, if not what they wanted when they got out, which was to get out, but of what they needed, Greg, of what other fellow inmates needed to make them, ah, better citizens afterwards?

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Ahhhh, not really, um. Most of the guys—I was in maximum security for most of my time—most of the guys up there had had horrific backgrounds, really terrible family backgrounds and childhoods, and that’s where the problem lay. A lot of them were very damaged before they came to prison and had histories of offending going back to when they were in school, absenteeism, neglectful parenting, abusive parenting, no parenting at all in some cases, and when you have a kid who’s been brought up in those circumstances, you’ve got a person who’s very very difficult to do anything with. It’s a problem which begins in childhood and is very difficult to turn around in adulthood. Quite often these guys wake up once they reach their forties and fifties, but between that age of seventeen to, say, 35 to 40 they can be pretty dangerous and pretty crazy.

MORA: And I know there are intentions, I’m sure they were voiced at the summit today and yesterday, about turning it round far earlier on in life, and that’s been discussed a lot.

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Oh yeah.

MORA: Anzac Wallace, at the Summit yesterday: “If we are 52 per cent of the prison population”—meaning Maori—“why aren’t we 52 per cent of the people speaking?” Is he right, that we need the Maori voice louder here, Greg?

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Well it’s no good just having—just ’cause you’re a MAORI on, uh, on, on crime or prisons. Ahhhhmmm, so I don’t think, uh, ahh, ahh, y’know, there’ll be Maoris at that thing that have got backgrounds, but ah, um, it, that’s not going to solve a problem, having a whole lotta people speaking who don’t know what they’re talking about. Um, you got seven hundred people there, and most of them won’t have any real background in criminology or corrections at all, they’ll just be people who’ve got nothing better to do for two days.

JOE BENNETT: Ha ha ha ha ha!

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: And you’ll have a big talk fest there, and everyone will come up with their own personal plans and bright ideas, but it’s not really going to make any difference.

JOE BENNETT: If you were Minister of Corrections what would you do?

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: This isn’t the first one, there’ve been heaps of these bloody summits in the past. The reason I’m not there is that I’ve been to so many, and that’s all they are, talk fests, and so I didn’t bother going, I’ve got better things to do.

MORA: Were you invited, out of interest?

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Yeah yeah, I was invited to, uh, to, uh, apply to go up, which was essentially an invitation to go there, but I didn’t respond to it because I thought it would be a waste of time.

JOE BENNETT: Can I ask a question? Greg, if you were suddenly appointed Minister of Corrections today, what would you do?

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: I’d start building prisons.

MORA: Seriously?

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: I’d build a, I’d stop, uh, double bunking, and um, I’d set up a program for inmates who self-identify. A lot of prisoners aren’t really that interested in reforming, and I mean, where Maori are concerned, for example, 70 per cent are gang affiliated. Well, if you’re gang affiliated, um, then, uh, your chances of actually going on to a crime-free lifestyle when you get out are pretty limited. So I’d get guys who self-identify, who want to get out of gangs and don’t wanna go to jail, and I’d make things available to THEM, and the others I’d say, well get on with your lag and get out and good luck to you when you get out.

MORA: One obvious question, and I mean, I don’t really want to get into the Scandinavian model again today, because we’ve talked about it a bit on the Panel but there ARE places overseas, and countries overseas, with lower recidivism rates than ours and, getting back to the original question that Chris asked about getting into the minds of prisoners, and it was interesting to hear your viewpoint on that, and also what Anzac Wallace said, uh, isn’t it necessary to get better acquainted with the minds of Maori prisoners if we’re going to get that terrifically high number of people in prison down?

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Y-y-yeah, well they talk about the Maori mind, Corrections talk about it. I don’t think Maoris have got different minds than Pakehas, quite frankly. I know lots of Maoris, they don’t think any differently to me, I was in jail with them, we all thought the same. I don’t think there’s such a thing as a Maori mind. And, ummmm, as far as that, you know, these recidivist rates, you can’t compare them internationally because they don’t ha—, there’s no standard measure for recidivism. They have different criteria and different follow-up periods, and unless you have the same follow-up period and the same criteria, you can’t compare different countries with their recidivist rates because you’re comparing apples with pears.

MORA: So you’re saying that when we hear about the success of individual overseas rehabilitative treatments, and someone says we’ve got the recidivism rate down from 49 per cent to seven per cent and measured that—

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Oh yeah, well they’re—BLOODY rubbish, absolute rubbish. AB-solute bloody nonsense. You look at that, you could look, I guarantee you, you give me that, that report and I’ll have a look at it, and I’ll find all the flaws in it. RUBBISH.

MORA: Heeeee-e-e-e! [chortling] We’ll assemble them all and present them for your, um, perusal! Ha ha!

JOE BENNETT: Ha ha!

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Yeah yeah, give me—

MORA: Okay—

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: I’ll critique the bloody lot.

MORA: So you think nothing works. I mean, people are sending in ideas on the text, uh, “a low rate in Utah of recidivism, where prisoners are adopted by families.—Paul.” I mean, we hear all the time if you can connect prisoners with whanau for example more efficiently in prison, they are far less likely to go back to prison, so I mean, there’s a lot of pretty impressive anecdotage about this Greg.

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Yeah it is, it’s all anecdotal, that’s all it is. You could get, y’know, I mean, they talk about, they talk about strengthening family ties, Christ, most of the guys in jail come from GANGS. If you, if you, heh heh, if you strengthen family ties, specially whanau ties with Maori, all you’re strengthening is the GANG association. So, um, y’know, ya gotta be pretty careful about what you’re talking about with your, with your, ahhm, when you, when you talk about strengthening whanau [chortling] whanau links. A lot of them come from intergenerational crime families [chortling]

MORA: Well the same applies—

REBEKAH WHITE: You go.

MORA: Sorry Rebekah, I was just going to say the same applies to intergenerational Pakeha crime families you would think.

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah, it does. It does, it does. And they—

MORA: Rebekah you were going to say something.

REBEKAH WHITE: Go.

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: But the Maori problem is particularly bad because whereas about 30 per cent of all inmates have gang association, where Maori’s concerned it’s SEVENTY per cent. It’s a HUGE problem.

REBEKAH WHITE: So going back to those families and those associations, is there research around what kind of interventions are successful at, um, correcting the course of life that someone might be on?

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Can you repeat that please?

REBEKAH WHITE: So is there research around what kinds of interventions can be, um, carried out?

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah. Yeah yeah there’s a whole lot of Canadian—

REBEKAH WHITE: What are the most effective ones?

PROFESSOR GREG NEWBOLD: Yes there’s a whole lot of Canadians which have done this very complicated regression analysis and they’ve got these programs which they say work. See, the problem is that most programs, and Integrated Centre Management, which we adopted in New Zealand in 2002, tried to emulate it. But the problem is: most of these programs that work take place in highly structured laboratory type situations where they’re fully resourced, they’ve got specialist Ph.D.-qualified people applying them, and they do have some effect on some people. I’m writing to a bloke at the moment who’s doing a degree at the private prison in Wiri and he’s having a hell of a lot of trouble studying because he’s got a cell-mate who wants to play the guitar all the time, while he’s trying to study. You know, if you’ve got, you do get people in prison who really do wanna get out and they’re taking realistic steps to stop themselves from reoffending, but if they’re stuck in an environment where achieving their goals is impossible, then they’re bashing their head against a wall.

Regarding the leak I have 3 concerns.

1, A person suffering a serious mental illness will also be unable to exercise good judgement. We witnessed this as regards the leak. Therefore they should not be sitting House but should be taking time out to recover. Mind you if we regarded good judgement as a requirement to sit in the House most of the benches would be vacant.

2. By not naming the person suspicion has fallen over more than 50 people being the Nat caucus. This is a breach of the rules of natural justice.

3. The person concerned has said they will self harm if named. I regard this in the same vain as the excuse used to shut down free speech that is Health and Safety. There is also no guarantee that the person might not self harm even if they are not named.

I regard the non naming as a very poor judgement for these reasons.

        Newbold’s views contrast with the empty-the-prisons insanity of Minister Little, who is being egged on by: liberal groups like the Howard League; by Maori politicians who at times seem to be advocating on behalf of gangs; and by those of the elite who live in safe, leafy suburbs and have little empathy with victims of crime.
        
        Newbold’s call for building more prisons ought to be a fighting call for National, but I suspect a few old “blue blood” Nationals will be working to rein in attacks on Little’s mad reform plans.

  I asked a similar question-‘How many Wallabies would make the All Blacks’? that kind of thing…
  His answer? – “No Wallaby has ever been good enough to pull on the Black jersey!”
  Thrown aback by this claim, I threw some names at him- John Eales, Nick Farr-Jones, David Campese, Tim Horan etc etc

Swedish public radio broadcaster Sveriges Radio has announced a new series of debates and workshops for the Stockholm area which will be exclusively in Arabic to “reach out to new arrivals”.
The project, which began this week, will see the broadcaster invite Arabic-speaking members of Swedish political parties to debate issues ahead of the national election next month, Sveriges Radio reports.

The leader of programming for the radio broadcaster Samar Hadrous commented on the new initiative, saying: “First of all, I hope that there will be a real debate. I really want that when the debate is over, the audience will have become a little wiser at political debate and Swedish politics, have more understanding on how Swedish politics works.”

What Samar Hadrous no doubt knows is that Swedish politics is regarded by Muslims as a temporary arrangement until Sharia law can be implemented.

  I have always been critical of meth hysteria, because I looked at the science and applied common sense. The hysteria failed both tests.
  
  The production of meth can cause contamination, but not the consumption of the finished product. Common sense suggests if tiny traces of it in the curtains were a serious health risk, then smoking the shit would kill you instantly.
  
  Just like climate change – there were other motivations for misrepresenting the risk.

      Some brands are coming back. Last time I heard, early this year, Triumph, which had gone bust twice, was up and running strongly under a new owner, with good technology and healthy international sales.
      
      In America, manufacturer Polaris Industries has the Indian brand back in the market. Both Harley Davidson and the motorcycle brands owned by Polaris are well ahead with electric motorcycle development.
      
      Maybe electric motorbike riders will be able to select the sound: a roar to annoy the neighbourhood, or quiet stealth to sneak home at ungodly hours.

The first time I tried Trivago I knew it was a con. It is as simple as comparing hotel sites with Trivago and seeing the big price difference.

I have it on good authority that the vile creep Sam_Bro won’t be bothering us too much more… Looks like it’s Stephieboy running the shop for the left wing lunatics on the blog. I do admire those on the left who put up a coherent argument and come here religiously often to face abuse from those who are a little less tolerant. But abusive, vile trolls like Ztev and Sam_Bro deserve their time in the wilderness.
