Time to put your money where your mouth is Shame – show us the trees – time to put up or shut up !

Are you out there Shame? – wakey wakey, hands off snakey – 80 million trees to go now Shame – that’s 80 followed by a bucketful of zero’s !

This is a very large number. To put it into context, if 80,000,000 x 5mtr high trees were laid end to end then they would reach the moon, and half way back again.

Summer’s over now, winter is winding up, so it’s the right time to start planting – better go wake up your cuzzies and give them a shovel some time soon !

  If, as NIWA reckons, we have a 55% (!) chance of heading for a dry spring/summer on the east coast, then new plantings might be in for a stressful time.

  Steady KiWombat they are still getting all the ducks in a row until the cuzzies can attend Micro trade training so they can be paid at a premium rate for gaining a minimal skill set. Did something like that once in a short course to be able to legally attach a plug to electrical appliances. Very short but never go to go to the revised course when the wiring colour codes were changed. Chances are the Micro scheme will be a good cover for building defects when the surface down stream. What a farce to create even semiskilled manpower for any industry.

I really do think somebody from the National Party needs to come right out with it and let the State Media especially know – publicly – next time they are in Government (and it might be sooner rather than later) that unless they can become a little less partisan, funding for RNZ will be halved, with a commercial imperative introduced, TVNZ sold off and there will be no more sweet deals such as Joyce did with Mediaworks etc.

Trump blasted the media on the hustings and it paid huge dividends.

For its population size, New Zealand has a colossal number of media outlets and many of them rely on the massive annual cash injections from Government coffers via the taxpayer who now watches Netflix.

DPF has posted here before the discrepancies between positive articles about the Left and negative articles about the Right, and the leanings of the various journalists.

The fact there’s hardly a ripple this morning about the Greens lying about the waka jumping bill proves it to me. Bridges appears content to wait till the media dies; this could take a long time.

  I quite like a national radio service. But I would advocate a back to basics model. It can run a New Zealand news service without the left spin. For 12 hours a day it can just broadcast selected international news (BBC, DW, etc).
  
  New Zealand on Air can die. Read the list of programmes they fund.

  Frankly I don’t think the government should sponsor political activism and other such lobby/pressure groups. It undermines the notion that they work for us, what if they prop up political institutions that seek to influence our views.
  
  The point of democracy is that we have periodic elections where we decide what sort of government we would like to have, not lobby/preasure groups pushing the public to some predetermined outcome. Fortunately people seem to be waking up with the demise of the msm pressure groups and despite their activism we got brexit, we got Trump, outside of the loss of UF and the Maori party their big push in NZ was basically a N/C in Parliamentary seat distribution.
  
  So at least the msm is now a failure as an advocacy pressure group, still it is time to defund this institution.

  Perhaps duggledog but taking on the Media party is surely a battle for another day as there are SO many more serious battles to be fought. Suggest noting that the COL are doing a fine job of displaying their incompetence even with the supporting Media party doing their damnedest to shield the worst. It has become impossible for the Media party to keep some things under raps especially as more choose to view OQT where so many need the witless protection time to find refuge. Those left to answer on behalf of also soon become revealed as hardly being capable of their Associate Ministerial roles.
  The biggest challenge for Simon Bridges is picking from the massive list of targets being presented by the COL as well as the rapid rate new additions are included in the list. Like after a suspicious uncle top appointment the chosen head of a very restrictive inquiry was told/chose to resign.
  It failed like every quick fix they try to resort to as well as the failed drip feed plan of what turned out to be false accusations against the previous Government. It sees the list keep getting expanded as incompetent Ministers stoop to foul means to effect a cover up as even Parliamentary rule are flaunted.
  While many still see the leadership of the National party as the B team they deserve a fair shot of lifting their game which is best served by a steady path than a radical one. IMO the recent conference while certainly putting the fear of the devil in the COL will prove to be a turning point for National. We also got some serious indicators of an early start to a strong campaign ahead as firm, sound policy direction have started to be announced. The strong foundations are being formed but it is quite some time before the roof is celebrated. Unlike the building industry they have an a abundance of affordable priced material. Anybody who has missed out of some direct line of communication to motivate this team is missing their chance to be part of the solution.

  Yesterday:
  1. In the space of 6 hours their defence of a conflicted chair of a non-enquiry turned to being announcing the resignation of the conflicted chair. So, now we have a non-enquiry into a non-enquiry;
  2. Martin was forced to confirm she misled the House on Tuesday;
  3. Peters acted in (or said things in the House) that denigrated another Member – did Duckie hold him to account for it?;
  4. Two construction companies went to the wall, & there are suggestions there are more – suggesting not all is grand in the economy. All of which is helping to feed negative sentiment of the business community; and
  5. To top it all off, our favourite troll from the e-CoLI troll farm earned Strikes 7 & 8 and got a ban. Read it & weep zdivvy.

    I am at home on ACC at the moment and I watched what my million dollars a minute buys.
    
    Pretty horrible and needs to be compulsory viewing once a week for all, that alone will push voter participation close to 100% and empty the prisons because even the meth heads would want to change that shower of shit.

But while the inner city is a melting pot of hundreds of cultures, it’s worth taking a tram or a train to suburbs a little further out to truly immerse yourself in some of them.

Buzzwords like melting pot, diversity, enrichment, vibrancy, enhancement essentially appeal to a personality overly impressed with novelty – an essentially childish trait. Multiculturalism is an illness of a dumbed down infantile society.

In the west, Footscray has cultures spanning from Vietnamese to Ethiopian. It has recently started to attract the hipster crowd, and is becoming gentrified. You’ll find plenty of dining options, international food stores and markets there.

In the north, Brunswick has a diverse mix of cultures; Middle Eastern bakeries, Mediterranean shops, Arabaic eateries, and a distinct hipster vibe

What about that Congonese and Sudanese enrichers? The Vietnamese and Chinese Triad gangs or the Arabaic allu snackbars? Why no mention of them?

What really grates me though is the self-hatred and hypocrisy of the authors who use this line of argument. These sorry people have been brainwashed into believing our own people and culture are so shit you need droves of Somalian taxi drivers, Arab Bakers, Indian dairy owners or Pakistani kebab-makers to make our countries better.

  Duncan Garner made an interesting comment this morning in his support of the teachers pay claims. He rightly pointed out that a lot of society’s issues are landed at the feet of teachers and gave the example of fathers who won’t turn up to a kids teacher/parent interview because they don’t believe that women should be allowed to work. WTF? Surely if any foreigner wanting to immigrate here harbours such views they should be deemed incompatible to our society and refused residency?

  Given Woods has had to deal with 2600 claims out of the 450,000 made, or 0.006%, its just to hard for her as ‘talking’ just won’t fix it.
  My daughter is one of the 2600 and the crap she has had to endure is unbelievable, despite all the Wood’s rhetoric that all is changed within EQC. My daughter received her settlement letter, which was based on a flawed scope, but put her over-cap so now has to deal with her insurer.
  An example of the scope omission – How do you remove and replace a reinforced concrete ring foundation WITHOUT removing a double brick fire wall and external brick chimney that sits on it, as both the firewall and chimney were missed, let alone all the consequential works. You would have to be a moron to miss this.
  Additionally, all the noise Woods made in regard to the supposed $75mil cost over-run of the new sports complex, when it was in fact Risk Contingency.     Line them with old newspaper, wipe them clean when appropriate and all three are still in pristine (almost 😉 ) condition.

    I/We use reusable bags (as long as we remember to take them) and they last several years. Almost all the ones we have were given out free by NW. They don’t get noticeably dirty if you empty them out – most stuff that could soil them is wrapped anyway.
    
    Given up mostly on using the supermarket plastic bags as bin liners – at least the large ones. For about $2 we can buy a roll of 50 such that are larger, don’t have a 25% chance of having a hole, and fit into the bin better. That lasts 3-4 months so hardly a ruinous expense.

Catch the teens, teach them how to make a Hangi or weave a mat, introduce them to other gang prospects and send them back to the street wiser and trained to do more serious crimes.

Yesterday in PQT Winston Peters clearly referred to Gerry Brownlee as Fatty, perhaps an accurate description. But given that the media, including overseas worthies such as the Guardian, went overboard recently when Trevor Mallard (and he alone) allegedly heard a National MP refer to Jacinda Adern as ‘a silly little girl’ I am wondering where the outrage is about Winston’s sin of ‘fat-shaming’. Those with long memories will recall the hot water Jim Bolger found himself in when he used the well-known saying ‘it’s not over till the fat lady sings’. The nation’s fat ladies and their advocates went ballistic. The media as always are selective about whom they choose to criticise. And they wonder why we have so little respect for them.

Things like the Waka-jumping bill mean SFA to most, what NZ politics desperately needs is an end to the whipping system.

Make every vote in Parliament except those on confidence or supply a “conscience” vote.

This way pollies would have to negotiate every bill right through the parliamentary process and the poor bloody voter will get back some of their power.

      No, and don’t be even more stupid than usual. The Constitution forbids having an “established religion”, where that refers to have an official state religion. It was a direct reference to the Church of England being the “established church” of Great Britain and how many of the original settlers to the US were fleeing religious persecution.
      
      It would forbid an Islamic theocracy for example, it also forbids Sessions or anyone in Government from favouring one religion to the exclusion of others. It does not forbid and in fact encourages state action to prevent discrimination against a religion.

As far as I am concerned the COL have declared war on myself and all others who believe in good governance. They are knowingly and deliberately insulting us with their refusal to follow good governance principles.

The Davidson issue the Martin issue both incidents where good governance principles were ignored and worse lairs were told.

These people must be held to at least the same account as an employee.

They are not my Masters even though they think they are.

If my employees acted as they have I would dismiss them and the Employment Court would support my dismissal as it had in previous cases.
All employment contracts include clauses that if applied to Davidson and Martin would see them gone.
We must keep the pressure on them.

  My understanding is that the special counsel will report back around September.
  I feel confident that the central claim of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia has no substance whatsoever.
  It seems manifestly clear that the real collusion was between the Hillary campaign and Russia via the Steele dossier which led to the appointment of the special counsel in the first place. There was also collusion between the mainstream media, the Democratic party, the FBI and the Justice Department to bring down Trump.
  
  What I still am worried about is that the real colluders will not be brought to justice. Hillary Clinton, the DNC, there is heaps of wrongdoing there. Unfortunately the special counsel is not concerning himself with that side of the investigation.
  
  But I feel confident that Trump will be exonerated. I feel less confident that the real wrongdoers will be punished. And they need to be. We can’t have a special counsel investigation launched just because the Democratic candidate lost an election that she thought she would win. That idea needs to be stamped out forthwith.

      Agree that there are lots of traps around walking into the Mueller investigation to be interviewed.
      The latest reporting I have read is that Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani is setting out with the Mueller team some conditions around what Trump will be interviewed about. The reporting says that the interview will be around instruction of justice.
      
      The president does want to be interviewed and wants this investigation to conclude. He believes that he is innocent and that by agreeing to being interviewed he will go a long way to wrapping up the investigation.
      
      One of the difficulties is with the whole concept of special counsel. They end up looking for a crime, any crime. Bill Clinton was investigated by the special counsel for real estate dealings called Whitewater. He ended up being investigated for sexual dalliances with an intern and lying to investigators.
      
      But for the good of America this investigation should come to a conclusion ASAP.

        At present after 2 years of investigation the worst thing we can find is that Don Jr met with a Russian because he believed that she had dirt on the Hillary campaign that came from Russia. However everyone agrees that the meeting ended abruptly because the woman had no such dirt and was actually lobbying for the rules to be changed around Russian adoption.
        
        So after 2 years of investigation we still have no evidence of Trump/Russia collusion.

    We did. He was made to do the jail time that was coming to him for contempt of court and breaching the conditions of his suspended sentence. Personally, I think “justice” would have involved him also copping some extra time for deliberately endangering some pretty expensive trials, the collapse of which would have been a serious injustice for the victims involved, but funnily enough the judge didn’t ask for my thoughts on the subject.

        The video was recorded at the Sentencing not during the actual Trial. Robinson arguably breached the reporting limits on the case but saying that he was “declaring them guilty” is not true.
        He says “alleged ” multiple times and just reads out the names of the defendants and the charges.
        As it turns out they were all declared guilty so saying that “other people will declare them guilty” is moot given the video was recorded at the actual sentencing

Apparently Maori were screwed when they handed over 2/3 of NZ for the value of three properties in Auckland.

That is a really dumb way of looking at things.

A much better way of looking at things is to recognise how much value the white man has added.

By selling 2/3 of the land to whites, the value of that land has increased so much that it is now worth millions of times as much as it was. A teenie bit of land (eg. one hectare of Auckland) is now worth more than what the whole NZ was worth.

The 1/3 not sold to the whites has also increased in value – perhaps not to the same extent – but still by many thousand times.

Thus, the deal might have reduced their land by a factor of three, but has increased the value of the remaining land by a factor of many thousand. All up, they are thousands of times better off. Clearly a very good deal.

Until raw material is developed it has very little value. The same goes for land, oil, sand, timber, fisheries…

An analogy I like to use is taking sand and making stuff with it. You can take sand and make glass, microprocessors, cell phones,… In the value of the sand is increased millions of times over.

A bucket of sand is maybe worth 1 cent. A bucket of sand made into microprocessors is worth millions of dollars.

What Maori are bleating about is they sold a bucket of sand, it got made into microprocessors and now they are complaining that they should have been paid millions of dollars for that bucket of sand.

  The argument that the land was sold for the equivalent of 3 auckland properties is ridiculous as well. If that argument is valid, then my parents should have the right to compensation from the government because the house they sold in 1989 is now worth hundreds of thousands of dollars more, an whoever bought it off them obviously ripped them off!
  
  The reality is the chiefs who sold their land for guns, blankets, whatever, thought they were getting a good deal. They weren’t capable of farming, developing,mining the land so to them most of the land was worthless!

  Every time I point out that teaching is only a part time seasonal job (like fruit picking) so should not expect to be paid like a full time job, I get a whole bunch of people telling me how teachers work so hard during holidays too.

    Non-teachers have been saying similar things on social media for as long as I can remember.
    I’m not a teacher so I’m not going to be drawn into that discussion.
    However.
    What I’d like to know is where do the hard working people who bitch & moan about teachers, the unemployed and all the other slackers & ‘troughers’ find the time to fuck around on their phones when they should be working?
    The answer for a lot of people is they do it on the bosses’ time. I see them as I walk down the street or previously when I used to work in an office.
    I’m not pointing the finger at you. I don’t know what your personal circumstances are, but often I see masses of nasty comments on Stuff or elsewhere at times when quite clearly a percentage of the people are distracted from some menial job.

    I’ll give you one example of many I could give: I have forgotten the number of times I’ve seen recent arrivals exit shops, unwrap their purchase and instantly throw the wrappng on the ground – rather than use the rubbish bin standing a few feet away. Time and time and time again.
    
    Extend this to other elements of their lifestyle and there you go.

Crikey, Newshub reckons the PM pocketed $54k salary during her 6 weeks off (full pay because apparently PM’s don’t qualify for maternity leave) and Tova O’Brien asks Jacinda if she will donate any of her salary to charity, yes to Plunket says Jacinda, so an amount up to $50k(?) asks Tova, no several thousand says Jacinda (several = seven in my book, so that’s several thousand)!

… Attendees probably left last night with more questions than when they arrived as Ministers, who in Opposition had seemed sympathetic to environmental issues were left qualifying and modifying their stance on major issues.

This was starkly evident in an exchange between Urban Development Minister, Phil Twyford, and the EDS CEO, Gary Taylor over urban sprawl.

Twyford had set out an impassioned description of the impact of high house prices in Auckland and advocated the linking together of transport and other infrastructure and new housing developments.

But he also advocated the scrapping or urban-rural limits.

“We believe that we have to manage growth on the fringes of the city,” he said.

“If we do not allow new land to come into the supply we will never ever fix the problem of absurdly expensive urban land.

“With good investment in infrastructure and transport, with more planning, not less to create the future urban environment that we want, setting aside areas of special value and open spaces, acquiring land for transport and other infrastructure, if we then allow the city to grow we will bring down urban land prices and it is absolutely critical that we do,” he said.

Twyford had proposed this when he was in Opposition but, even so, any suggestion that more rural land was going to be absorbed for housing was going to be controversial at an environmental conference.

And Taylor was quick to respond.

“Everything makes sense except I worry about why you need to do away with rural-urban boundaries altogether,” said Taylor.

He said that giving free reign to developers seemed inconsistent with Twyford’s overall objective of having a compact city.

Twyford replied that it was a question of values.

“This is for us, for Labour, for our coalition government, this is fundamentally a social justice issue.

“Our objective is not to build a Copenhagen of the South Pacific.

“We could build a beautiful city with a whole lot of the policies we have talked about.

“We could build a Vancouver of the South Pacific; beautiful but utterly unaffordable.

“I’m interested in us fixing this totally dysfunctional urban land economy.

“If we don’t deal with affordability we will have completely wasted the opportunity that has been given to our generation.”

Twyford said the only way to deal with the affordability issue was to deal with the land price issue and that meant dealing with the artificial scarcity of land caused by the planning system and the availability of finance for infrastructure.

However he didn’t dispute that the Auckland region was going to become more heavily built up.

“You know what,” he said. “In two or three generations this is going to become a tri-city conurbation between Hamilton, Tauranga and Auckland whether we like it or not.” … read more via hyperlink above …
