The government made an announcement about the “Crown-Maori partnership”, which now has a minister. For this announcement, they invited some Maori into the cabinet room to symbolize Maori having a seat at the table where the nation’s most important decisions are made.

So who did the government invite into the beehive to represent Maori?
Sitting next to the prime minister was Titewhai Harawira and on the other end of the table was her grandson Wikatana Popata (and some other relatives).

I’m shocked. Harawira is controversial enough, but Popata was convicted of assaulting Prime Minister John Key in 2009. Shame on Jacinda Ardern for associating with this lowlife.

Can you imagine the outcry if a Labour prime minister was assaulted and later a National prime minister knowingly held a photo op with the assailant?

Interestingly, only the NZ Herald mentions Popata’s presence at the meeting. And they removed a photo of him at the meeting from an earlier version of the article.

    She left a white, decent, hard working lady to die in Bali, yet she is reported as saying she felt sorry for not being able to do anything.
    She can give $3 million to paedophiles and thugs on Manus Island, give millions to PIs for bogus superannuation, but would not help a hard working taxpaying ill Kiwi lady dying in hospital.

    But the Crown won’t represent non-Maoris in the sense of vigorously challenging historical evidence or separatist claims, if the ToW tribunal hearings or iwi-local body partnership management bodies being set up are anything to go by.
    
    We already have equal-partnership groups with decision-making powers where half the membership is held by representatives of iwis whose members also have a vote in local bodies. The NZ taxpayer is subsidising claims for coastal control, but not subsidising those who challenge these claims.

  The tragic thing, though, is that there is very little possibility of this kind of Maori preferentialism ever being reversed – or even meaningfully reduced – if this government were to be voted out.
  
  Has anyone ever heard anything from the National Party that indicates it would arrest the slide towards racial separatism that is happening in our country? Quite the opposite in fact. Under the Nats the maoris were given billion$ and they were consulted and grovelled up at every opportunity.

    The “big lie” is that the Treaty of Waitangi created a partnership between the Crown and Maori, and this bullshit is merely complying with legal obligations.

    OK here’s a serious question. Obviously KiwiBlog readers and commenters aren’t exactly ‘mainstream’ kiwi voters. For starters they are much probably more interested in politics than the average Joe. This is probably given.
    
    But even of you accept that, isn’t there a huge potential groundswell of support out there for a party which would meaningfully send a message that we should backpedal on Maori separatism, stop pandering to stupid ‘climate change’ bullshit, demand integration from immigrants, halt the advance of Islam in NZ, radically improve our education system and reduce welfare to those who are in genuine need?
    
    What do you think? Uptick if you think the general thrust (not each item specifically) of such a party would attract support in the wider community, or downtick if you think I’m dreaming.

        There is a great opening for party now because there are more and more people who have no one to vote for and see no leadership amongst our current politicians.
        The issues you mentioned above are a good start and there are plenty more.
        Kiwis should be marching in the streets right now over the separatism alone but they are too busy getting on with life and with MMP they don’t see any options to get rid of the career politicians we are infested with.
        It is actually dam serious and when you have Palmer and HC yapping from the sidelines it is scary as hell.
        We need a new party , definitely.

      I think that people mostly just want a competent government that can manage the economy and generally won’t cause problems. This is why both main parties gravitate towards boring middle-of-the-road policy platforms. Voters don’t like radical change.
      
      So I think you will find that these policies get a lot of support, but this isn’t necessarily going to translate into lots of votes if the political messengers are seen as loose cannons.

All this does is reveal what a bunch of gauche losers the CoL actually is. The irony of having a convicted thug in the Cabinet Room will undoubtedly be lost on Taxinda & Co. The greater irony is that the vile Harawira tart cannot speak Maori other than a number of hideous anti-White curses so this can’t be a celebration of the pointless “Te Reo” week either.   “The media arrived for an announcement on the Crown-Māori relationship.
  
  But the announcement appeared to have been delayed because the only announcement Ardern made was that the Cabinet had decided that the group present would be the final submitters before the Cabinet made final decisions.”
  
  I don’t know what scares me more – the PM’s incompetence or the influence of Titewhae Harawira.

    Right AgainstTheFlow even apart from the silly little girl denigrating the chamber with activists whose constant agitation has resulted in so much wastage of public funding. Redirected to the critical areas of the system where these as well as everybody else would benefit most only sees the waste compounded as all those special programs fail. They have managed to redefine the term “help yourself first” buy the elite being there first to only help themselves to what they can grab resulting in the targeted group STILL missing out. Thus the constant cries of not doing enough for the Muddy people when it is largely their own tribal power structures fat hands too heavy to reach beyond pocket or mouth.
    However the two most frightening things about this disgusting show of impropriety is A) the old crow saying “we now have OUR OWN Minister and B) the said Minister is no other than Davis. Again we only see $$$$ signs as yet another burden layer is added into the mix likely to push the wastage level closer to the $1 billion mark. Yes it is never a surprise that yet another Murry language week sees an even bigger push this time for finally getting made compulsory. Knowing those obvious Fool Factors (unintended consequences) again being ignored completely by a Government more intent on keeping them in the tent just for their political survival.
    Lets just rewind a little to take stock of just who it is that is pushing the saving of this dying language. Apart this from all the white virtual signalling public servants and fools who follow the piper but is again the same elite group who crowd out all the bros. How many of the LCD will ever become fluent in their own or any other language for that matter. Then when we cross the growing racial divide it is only the sort of better schools who’s higher capable students have the capacity for two languages. Meanwhile the under performers will continue to do what the best and only swell the wrong statistics with numbers on their shirts and more headstones/unmarked plots.
    If anybody was confused about why after being reassured it was not necessary why this Government NEEDS more taxes just watch the bobbing head of the silly little girl. We are hastened to ask though if this move was so important why it was not the subject of one of their special expert panels or advise groups? They left it up to Davis? That’ll work well. I was criticising TVNZ for pushing maori language onto a POM, a very good weatherman, who clearly struggled learning a language he doesn’t understand. 99.9% of the viewers don’t give a damn about hearing a bunch of words they don’t understand and don’t care to understand.     It will all be over in a few years. No govt can force a change from English to a pidgin maori.
    
    Elsewhere in the Pacific the compromise has been to use both the local language and English. To adapt the local language was impossible or pointless as they would have had to borrow so much English as would swamp their natural language.
    NZ does not have the homogenous population of other Pacific countries so 85% of the people don’t have language problems in a modern technical society. Their language is already adequate.
    
    It’s the short sighted activists that are the problem.

Ardern, having been thrust into the leadership as she was, and adulated by the MSM at the time, was not placed under the scrutiny of previous holders of the office of Leader of the Opposition.

She has become the Photo Op leader, never tested in Parliament to any great level, never having been a Cabinet Minister, never winning an electorate seat until being gifted Mt Albert after losing in Auckland Central 3 times.

She is proving to be so far out of her depth, and lacks the introspection necessary to grow in the job, as evidenced by her assertion that she handled the Curran issue well.

Ardern’s gubmint happy to bask in the glow of returning deceased servicemen’s remains but also comfortable to allow New Zealanders to die abroad.

Whatever about the merits of insurance etc there’s a bit of an irony in what they spend our money on , including bringing unwanted fakeugees in while NZers languish abroad.

Waitangi Tribunal finds Crown breached treaty obligations, caused harm to Te Rohe Pōtae

The tribunal’s 1506-page report gives particular focus to negotiations between Crown officials and leaders of Te Rohe Pōtae in the 1880s.

“The report found the cumulative impact of the Crown’s treaty breaches in the district has been breakdowns in social and political relationships, land loss, and enormous social, economic and cultural prejudice, the impacts of which continue to this day,” the tribunal said.

The tribunal recommends the Crown puts in place legislation to recognise the rights of autonomy and self-determination of Te Rohe Pōtae Māori.

I’m not sure if anyone is following the “controversy” in the UK after Rabbi Menahem Lester broke ranks last week and said: “he feels Islam has no place in Europe and certainly not in Britain.”

The furore and swiftness of the denunciation of the good Rabbi by organised Jewry in this seemingly innocuous, factually correct and obvious statement is extremely telling & revealing:

Rabbi David Mason, of Muswell Hill Synagogue, also condemned the comments.

Was just wondering about the very ill NZ who was lying in a coma in Bali at the same time as the Peters selected PM Ardern made her must do dash to Nauru to attend a banquet and talk foreign refugees .
Yet here we had a real NZ born citizen in a desperate health situation in Bali.Maybe would it have crossed her mind to instead of spending tens of thousands on a trip to Nauru maybe flying the real NZs home in the early stage of her illness .Not to be, not important enough. Not enough votes in that.
Sadly the real NZs passed away in Bali at the weekend thousands of kilometres from home.
Between Peters and Ardern refusing to help out the desperate NZ family in Bali in their hour of need is a bloody indictment on how they operate. Maybe as a token they could at least offer to fly the body home back to NZ. Shame on you Ardern and Peters,for earlier refusing to help out the NZ family.Not a good look and a stain on the good name of NZ.

Right of way is Way of Right

I have a friend who used to be a US Marine.

On the morning of 11 Sept 2001, she was promoted to Lance Corporal in a ceremony at her place of work. She worked in Arlington County, Marine Corps HQ, Washington DC. Across the road from the Pentagon.

The ceremony was interrupted by the roar of jet engines, and they glimpsed the silver streak of American Airlines 77 flash by them, and then the impact, the explosion, the fireball. The building they were in shook as though it was an earthquake.

As is the manner of those in the military, she ran TOWARDS the fire, and with her Marine comrades, helping the wounded, performing basic triage, evacuating the more seriously wounded. She didn’t sleep for three days.

On the second day, she joined the search and rescue teams that scoured the rubble looking for ‘non-survivors’.

It was during one of those searches that a concrete barrier shifted and crushed her left ankle. At first it seemed the damage wasn’t that bad, but it was worse than she could ever have imagined. That ankle would never heal properly. It became a source of constant pain and suffering, leading to intense physical and mental anguish. She developed PTSD from what she had seen in the Pentagon, and always the pain from her ankle made it worse.

After 5 surgeries, with no improvement, in 2014, She made the decision to amputate.

Since her surgery, she has gone from strength to strength. As a para-athlete, she competes against, and beats, two legged athletes. She has heart and soul in abundance.

She’s one of the toughest women I’ve ever met. I’m proud to call her my friend.

I won’t name her here, but I’m thinking of her today. Her and thousands of others.

  I don’t think National would be wise to raise this in Parliament or make anything of it.
  There will be plenty of examples of previous Governments (of both sides) refusing to help NZ residents/citizens when they are in trouble overseas.
  National should leave it to David Seymour (who has already come out swinging).
  And people should be reminded about all of those uninsured (not under-insured) Christchurch residents getting payouts.

    In the court of public opinion, this was a decision that will be remembered for years to come.
    It will be remembered as a failure to act, a shameful decision, a lack of compassion and humanity.

A few KBers have had it in for Simon Bridges wishing he would come out all guns blazing against the govt. They have underestimated him. He is playing the long game.     Sweden’s electoral system is proportional, and similar to New Zealand’s except that the threshold for party participation is 4 per cent rather than 5 per cent.
    
    There are eight parties in the one-chamber Riksdag, the Swedish Parliament.
    
    The Riksdag has 310 electorate seats and there are 39 “adjustment seats”, which I guess are the equivalent of our list MPs.

    Right ex-golfer while many parents who usually rely on somebody else providing care for their handicapped children are now entitled to be paid to do what they should have done from the start. It will be interesting to see how this impacts on the established care industry provide through DHB’s? Lots of carers in those situations will not get the perk holidays they put their charges up to “deciding” they want to go to a Oz, USA or maybe the UK.

  The biggest fault with ACC is that it’s a “No fault” system.
  Suggestions:
  Privatize it, worked well last time!
  Modify:
  Accident/traffic record, linked to the cost of rego.
  Sports clubs and recreational pursuits subject to ACC (eg skiing, ACC part of the lift pass)
  Companies/people with good records (not just H&S policies) ie no accidents, pay less and their workers too.
  This will encourage everyone to be mindful of H&S, as it will hit them in the pocket if they don’t.

    Discussing it on TV3 it was noted there were 56 pages of conditions attached to one person’s insurance cover. Apparently, if you visit your GP within 3 months of overseas travel this can affect your policy. I assume that would eliminate quite a number of travellers who try claiming from their travel insurance?

      As long as you disclose pre-existing conditions, then they are contractually bound to pay out if a policy is issued. In this case, the lady clearly didn’t tell them she had a problem, that problem caused the twisted bowel, and so she lost cover for that and the consequences flowing from it. Big hint. Disclose. If you don’t get insurance, don’t travel.

        It’s just a bit simplistic, that attitude.
        
        Covermore is the same travel insurance sold by travel agents (who don’t actually understand their policies themselves and can hardly be expected to ask the right questions or provide clarifications) at the same time as the flights.
        
        I nearly took Covermore to court myself recently, under the fair trading act in the Disputes Resolution, til they finally rang me ten minutes before my cut-off point to tell me they would settle. They’d already had a phone call from a travel editor that same afternoon, to “seek clarification” and I strongly suspect they’d realised they would lose if it went to court. That was over knowingly selling me a dual insurance policy; the fine print said if I was able to claim under a different insurance policy, then I “must” do so, which meant my Covermore policy was worthless as I already received complimentary travel insurance through my credit card company, and had told the travel agent this at the time I purchased, but she persuaded me that Covermore would give me “better” cover; which of course wasn’t the case at all as I would not legally be able to make a claim with them!
        
        Basically I think Covermore are rubbish; they tried to do everything they could to avoid paying out when my friend’s daughter got sick in Thailand and she also ended up threatening them with the media before they finally paid up.
        
        I’m not convinced, given that history, that Abby Hartley actually did anything wrong at all. Just because a condition is pre-existing doesn’t mean she knew about it, or that she understood the terms on the travel insurance questionnaire, or that the travel agent who sold it to her understood those terms either.

        I use One Cover (Lloyds) because they have reasonable health questions. I have spoken to people who travel and use their credit card insurance and don’t tell the company they have existing conditions, thinking their bank will stand by them. Dumb.

I can’t believe they are not targeting SH2 between waihi and tauranga…. this is one of the most dangerous stretches of roads with high traffic volumes , poor road quality, and abysmal driver behaviour. Lot of deaths result.

And….yesterday there was another fatal on that road…. there will be more this year.

But cops still say sh2 is not a priority.

Ardern has well and truly jumped the shark. Insurance be buggered. This was an opportune time for NZ to restore relationships with the U.S and get Hartley to Stanford or back to Middlemore via American Medivac. Or Wellington.

      I doubt if there are public hospitals as we know them in Bali.
      There is a big difference.
      She was treated in a private hospital. I doubt if NZ private hospitals would accept uninsured tourists.
      
      I have had some experience with Thai hospitals. You can’t leave until the bill is settled.

  The economy tanks, fuel costs rise and kiwis stop travelling by car on casual trips. Cafes get quieter (it is already happening) as customers eat more at home or take lunches to work. Air NZ is throwing around big cuts in selected air travel and expect to see more before Christmas.

Just received an email from Spark telling us our broadband is going up by $5/month, from next invoice.

We’re in the middle of a 12-month contract.

Funny sort of contract! I wonder how it would go down if we told them we’ve decided we’re going to pay $10 less per month?

This will be the last time we make the mistake of using Spark for anything.

Up to five million Australians could get thousands of dollars back from the big banks under what is set to be the largest class action in the nation’s history.

Law firm Slater and Gordon will today launch an unprecedented wave of legal action on behalf of around one in three Australian workers believed to have their super invested as cash with the banks, according to a News.com.au report.

An issue is the fact that bank-owned super funds have been busted putting members’ money into the parent bank instead of the bank that offers the best interest rate — meaning workers are often paid between 0.5 and 1 per cent less interest than they should be.

The firm estimates that for someone with AU$100,000 in cash just a 0.5 per cent difference could have cost them about AU$3000 in only six years.

Could prove expensive for the banks, and a windfall for their lawyers whatever the outcome.

Wow. Wow wow wow.

I just listened to Mike Hosking interviewing Jacinda Ardern this morning … the term “train-wreck” comes to mind 🙂

Mike started off gently, asking if she regretted how she handled the whole Clare Curran issue. He then ramped up, asking why Jacinda didn’t tell Newstalk ZB that Clare had resigned during the interview when she already knew this. Jacinda answered, “Well the question I was asked from memory was if her seat was safe and had I sacked her, and I had not.” Mike then told her what the original question was – “Have you considered – this is the question – have you considered as Prime Minister cutting ties with Clare Curran?” Jacinda first bumbled about, unclear why Mike would ask her this when Clare has already resigned. Mike clarifies, telling Jacinda that was the question she was asked at the time and why didn’t she state she had already received Clare’s resignation? Jacinda obfuscates and firstly states that she had already made her decision to remove her from cabinet (Really? Despite stating her position was safe??? Uh … what???) and then goes on to say she hadn’t even received her resignation at that time!

Read that again. Jacinda states that she had already made her decision to remove her from cabinet. And yet in the interview with Chris Lynch she stated she hadn’t considered firing her, her position was safe, and that she doesn’t want to set the bar so high that if you show a bit of human frailty you lose your job over it.

Mike then goes in with all guns blazing – why had her office provided an edited, inaccurate transcript to David Farrar? “Oh that’s not something I was involved with, but there’s nothing for me to hide.” Mike asks if she is worried that her office is editing transcripts. “Well I can’t confirm that they had or hadn’t Mike.” Mike informs her that he can, because he has both versions in front of him. Jacinda’s answer? “Well then you can helpfully provide that transcript to David as requested”. Mike just can’t believe this, you can almost hear him face-palming!

And just for good measure, in the middle of all this, Mike slipped in a question about how was Greg O’Connor told off? “By myself”, was the answer. “But in a telling-off kind of way?” asks Mike (it’s pretty obvious what Mike thinks at this point, from the tone of his voice). “I think you can expect the conversation I had with him, and it was as you would predict” came the reply. Pfft.

Hosking obviously no more believes that Jacinda is capable of giving somebody a rip-roaring tongue-lashing than the rest of us!

Have a listen, this is just unbelieveable.

Hi all, been a while.
I am just visiting now that Agent BallSack is no longer banned to inform you all that I am retiring the Agent BallSack profile, and retiring from commenting on New Zealand blogs altogether.

I would like to thank first of all DPF for allowing me the privilege to comment here over the last few years, and wish him luck in the future with his family and his endeavours, thanks David!

To the rest of you, too many to name! who I have enjoyed interacting with, shooting the shit, living through great victories such as National and Trumps election, and the total clusterfucks like the last election and the disappointment it enjoined, thank you all. You all are great people and hopefully one day we will share a beer, a whisky or a huge fat blunt when dude weed is finally decriminalized. You have helped me through dark days even when you haven’t realized it.

While it has been fun, I no longer have the interest in curtailing my speech or thoughts to pass the standards on this or any other blog. Having lurked the last few weeks, while coming to this decision I have realized I wouldn’t last a week here before being banned for the 8th time and the requisite 6 months so it’s time to hang up my chapeau and bid you all adieu.

To the lovers, haters and mildly disinterested – stay safe, love life and don’t take it all so fucking seriously!

I think that’s about it, I wasn’t planning on writing a novella, just saying goodbye and wishing you all the best of health while drawing a line past the point I will not return.

Its not in my printed Maori dictionary.

      The guy’s obviously a bit limited – perhaps just ignore him or simply rebut his arguments if you must. Posting personal details is a little off. I can recall feeling a little threatened myself when one post swore he would find out who I was. I’ve only been marginally more careful than stephieboy.
      
      I find it a little odd that some regular commenters on this blog seem to think stephieboy is so out of line that he needs such concentrated attention.

“Better Treaty partner arrangements a mistake
A Crown-Maori Partnership portfolio and a new agency to support the Crown to be a better Treaty partner, announced yesterday, is fraught with danger because it entrenches the notion that the Crown and Maori somehow exist as separate groups.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern made the announcement in the Cabinet room with veteran activist Titewhai Harawira next to her.

Deputy Prime Minister and New Zealand First leader Winston Peters, who has consistently opposed such separatism, was conspicuously absent when Ms Ardern made the announcement.

Also present with Harawira, who was jailed in 1989 for assaulting a patient at a mental health unit she ran, was her grand-nephew Wikatana Popata, who is another activist who has also been convicted of assault.

Some must be scratching their heads seeing the Prime Minister and other Ministers fawning over such “Treaty partners”.

Police show two laws after statue vandalised
When an activist from Huntly sprayed red paint on the statue of Captain John Fane Charles Hamilton, in Hamilton, two weeks ago, the police only issued a pre-charge warning and the Hamilton City Council said it would clean up the statue and repair the damage. Awaiting Winston on Maori seats entrenchment bill
A bill entrenching the Maori seats into New Zealand electoral law passed its first reading in Parliament on September 5 supported by New Zealand First, which opposes the Maori seats.

The Electoral (Entrenchment of Maori Seats) Amendment Bill in the name of Labour’s Te Tai Tonga MP Rino Tirikatene would require a 75 per cent majority of Parliament to get rid of them.

New Zealand First MP Darroch Ball said the party believed the issue of the Maori seats should be put to a binding referendum. An amendment requiring a referendum could be added at select committee stage.

Stop living in the past
The past doesn’t have to dictate the future. We can keep heading down the path of separatism in this country if we want, but all that is going to do is enrich a few lawyers and academics, according to commentator Ryan Wood on Friday.

Commenting after the recent vandalism of the Captain Hamilton statue in the city that bears his name, Wood wrote that as a person with South Island Maori ancestry whose forebears were conquered by a North Island tribe, he feels no urge to get revenge by daubing graffiti on the Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua.

“We could stop living in the past and start seeing each other as fellow humans, we could maybe even start addressing the real cause of inequality in our society,” he wrote.”

    You’d have to admit that the 4 to 5 centuries of NZ settlement prior to the arrival of the Pakeha weren’t kind to the Maori race. We are told that they left the Pacific islands as master seafarers, conservationists & agriculturalists yet by circa 1800 they wouldn’t venture out of sight of land, had wiped out the moa & a few other assorted species & most had forgotten how to grow kumara.
    
    The poor wretches were sitting around dressed in rotting sealskins, chewing on the last of the tribe next door & trying to remember how to make a stone axe.
    
    Seldom have a people regressed so far in so little time.

        Strange logic. The Hungarians arrived in their homeland about the same time the ancestors of Maori arrived in Aotearoa. They were great horsemen, but no one realised for centuries they came from the Ob River part of Siberia, until linguists made the connection. The ancient Britons were great masons, but the modern Britons don’t know what Stonehenge was supposed to do. History tends to be mysterious; that’s why we study it.

        Don Brash spoke for many conservative Pakeha when he aired the old myth about Moriori being an extinct pre-Maori people; and another outdated idea popular in the same circles, and no doubt at Kiwiblog, holds that Polynesians didn’t have the aquatechnology and navigational skill to settle Aotearoa and other islands intentionally, but were instead blown here by storms.
        
        This idea was up for debate in Western universities in the ’50s and ’60s, but it’s been discounted for many decades, owing to new evidence: the discovery of obsidian from the Bay of Plenty on Raoull Island and of archaic Maori artefacts on the Auckland Islands; the first DNA surveys in the late ’90s, which showed that Maori were descended from not less than fifty founding females; and Lisa Matisoo-Smith’s first DNA studies of rattus exuluns in 1998, which demonstrated that, unlike the Chathams and the Marquesas Islands, the main islands of NZ were not isolated in the centuries before contact with Europeans, but instead received furry visitors from several parts of the Pacific (rat DNA is a good guide to human exploration, because rats can’t swim across the Pacific by themselves).
        
        Hopefully a few Kiwibloggers are watching Sam Neill’s new series about Cook and the Pacific, and seeing the extent of Polynesian knowledge of the ocean. Cook’s Tahitian translator and navigator Tupaia drew hm a map which showed fourteen different islands, some of them thousands of miles from his homeland.

        But, Scott, it’s inaccurate and misleading to say, as you do in your 9.48 post:

        Not true. You’re bending facts to support your argument about history of Polynesian migration. You are very enthusiastic about Polynesia culture, and I think this at times can can bend your analysis.
        
        Hungary, of course, means “land of the Huns”. When Attila died leading the Huns against the Roman Empire in 453 AD, the Huns were well known to have come from east of the Volga. That is, from Siberia.
        
        The historian Edward Gibbon, who died in 1794, wrote that the Huns were the descendants of the non-Han Chinese Xongiu tribes, which who were driven west (into central Asia and Siberia) by the Chinese a century or two before the Huns attacked the Roman Eastern Empire.
        
        Hungarian, Finnish, Estonian, and several Russian minority Uralic languages have long been known to be of one language family. The closest languages to Hungarian are Khansy and Mansi, both of which are spoken east of the Urals – that is, in Siberia.
        
        I presume DNA research has, or will confirm what language analysis shows – it usually does.
        
        Of course the Huns were famous horsemen. So were the Scythians and the Alans, who were either the same as, or were closely related to, the Huns. Everyone on the vast east European plains and west Siberian plains were either horsemen or were from further north and used reindeer for transport.
        
        Incidentally, it’s interesting that DNA links have been found between Scottish people and a Siberian tribe.
        
        With a surname like Hamilton, I suspect you have Scottish genes, Scott. You may be distantly related to indigenous Siberians, who are now greatly outnumbered by ethnic European Siberians.

With respect, Jack5, you’re mistaken about the link between Attila the Hun and modern Hungarians. The Huns had disappeared from history centuries before the Hungarians had their ethnogenesis. While both hail from central Asia, a vast area, there’s no proof of a historical connection. The scholarly consensus until the middle of the 19th century was that the Hungarians were descended from the Sythians – it was quite a surprise when, as you say, the linguistic connection to Siberia, and in particular the Ob River valley, was found.

  Scott, old pal,. Herodotus in the 5th century BC wrote of the Yugra people living west of the Ural Mountains. This is where still are the Mansi and Khanty people of Russia, whose language is the Hungarian language’s nearest kin.
  
  I can’t see how it’s surprising that there’s a linguistic connection between Estonians, Finns, Hungarians, the various Finnic peoples of Russia, and a tribe in Siberia.
  
  At least not as surprising as finding a Siberian-Scottish link.
  
  Scott, please keep your posts coming on Tonga, the Chathams, and NZ pioneer days. A possible topic: the many Australians who came to NZ as militia men and son on – were there “ticket of leave” (paroled) convicts among them?

    Without question they’re from Siberia; but Siberia is very large, and there doesn’t seem a link with the Huns. Having said that, the Huns vanished as a people a long time ago, so it’s difficult to completely rule out. But the Ob River valley seems to be the linguistic homeland, and as you note the Finns and Estonians and Finno-Ugric peoples of Russia are all relations. I believe that Hungarian nationalists and fascists have been very much opposed to the notion that their ancestors were fisherfolk from Siberia: they asserted what they considered a more virile ancestry, that went back to peoples like the Mongols. Turianism was a sort of pan-central Asian ideology, popular amongst Hungarian fascists, that south to unite everyone from Magyars to Japanese against the Slavs and the Western Europeans.
    
    I might have some Siberian ancestry; I did a DNA test a couple of years ago and the results suggested I had a small amount of either Russian or Finnish blood. But I think it’s more likely that the Polynesians rather than the Scots have a link to the indigenous peoples of Siberia. Certainly there are strong connections culturally between the Austronesians who had their ethnogenesis on the coast of China and in Taiwan about 8,000 years ago and the Siberian peoples, who of course also supplied the population of the Americas, via the Bering Strait. I think Siberian shamanism has some intriguing similarities with Austronesian and eventually Polynesian religion.
    
    Some scholars have suggested Polynesians are so tall partly because of natural selection on long sea journeys: the little people died of exposure. But this woldn’t explain why, for example, the I-Kiribtai and Marshallese, who were skillful and daring sailors, are less tall. The rich farming economy in pre-contact Tonga – Cook likened the island of Tongatapu to Holland, because of its gardens – may have helped stature.
