        I was reading the Standard for a laugh. In fairness to some on that site, they do mention Curran as a weak link and needs to go.
        
        Some even admit that some of the cabinet are weak and poor performers and some give an honourable mention to Kelvin. They feel Kelvin needs help with his presentation skills.
        
        However, the funniest I’ve heard is Mike William’s in his interview session on RNZ with Matthew Hooton justifying both Kelvin and Curran.
        
        I’ve heard William’s on at least two occasions telling listeners what a great teacher Kelvin was up north when he invited him to be a candidate. In the case of Curran, William’s told listeners that he chaired the selection panel when Curran defeated Benson-Pope who was the incumbant MP. Given Hooton then replied that her tenure in parliament to date has not been stellar, and judging by her performance this year, leaves you reflecting more and more about the Peter Principle.
        
        In the case of Curran and SLG manure has certainly risen beyond its capacity to deliver.

        I have thought about my last post too. I think Curran is proving there is a couple of flaws in the Peter Principle.
        
        The principle in general is an incompetent person will rise to the level of there incompetence.
        
        However, as I see it we have witnessed an extension of the Peter Principle on 2 levels. As I see things:
        
        1. Cindy is incompetent and does not know, and with nothing to stop her she has in turn appointed other incompotent people to be ministers; and
        
        2. Some of these she has appointed have been incompotent to an extreme level aka Clare Curran.
        
        Therefore, we have a paradox of the incompotent PM who having appointed the extremely incompotent Clare Curran, is then seen to be so incompotent that she can’t sack the incompotent Clare Curran.
        
        Therefore, I feel I’ve insulted manure, because manure at least has a purpose which is more than can be said for the SLG and Curran.

  We were sold a “she can do this” PM who would be a fantastic mum without compromising her ability to do her job as PM. In fact, it would enhance her ability since it would give her an affinity with the other family people out there.
  
  In one week we’ve seen:
  * Can’t show up for the flight to Nauru because she can’t be away from baby for over 36 hours.
  * Approx $300k of extra travel costs (and over 100 tonnes of extra CO2 emissions) to allow her to change her schedule around the baby.
  * No show at parliament because she felt like working from home to be with baby. I’m not sure how you can work from home on a debating day…
  
  Cindy, you cannot do it all without compromise. You really do have to make a choice.
  
  Trust me, your leadership skills are not more valuable than your parenting skills.
  
  Go home, be a mum, and come back to politics in a decade or so. You’re young and have plenty of time to make a career.
  
  I hope you choose wisely. Your child is more important than the temporary rush you get from power.

  Totally agree with your comments. As I said on another post yesterday baby brain is a real thing. Often a new mother will spend lots of time at home caring for her child in those first critical months of life. That bond between the child and the mother are absolutely essential to the child’s sense of well-being and love that he or she has through life.
  
  I am not trying to be mean to the Prime Minister but I really do believe that she would be better served by looking after her child and leaving the running of the country to someone else right now.

    Ardern feels that she can’t afford to leave the job on a temporary basis to her deputy, Winston Peters. Why not? It’s not as though she can do much without his personal approval; e.g.
    – repeal the ‘three-strikes’ legislation;
    – lift NZ’s refugee intake to 1,500.
    
    For all his idiosyncrasies, Peters has a much better grasp than Ardern of what New Zealand’s voters expect. He stands in stark contrast to this immature woman and her ‘look at me’ leadership style.
    
    As a result, Ardern’s days as a credible Prime Minister are already well behind her, regardless of how long her woeful coalition clings to its Parliamentary majority.

So I’ve finally switched to Newstalk ZB rather than Morning Report. I never liked ZB because there are so many ads. But the leftist bias on RNZ has spiralled out of control. It’s got to the point where actually I prefer hearing about the product that will revolutionise cleaning my bathroom, with occasional jabs in between at our clown government. Tough times.

    It’s precisely this attitude which will kill the Maori language. Why would you even attempt speaking it a little if all you get for your efforts is ridicule and embarrassment?
    
    If they are serious about encouraging people to learn or speak Maori, then they just need to get people speaking and using it however basic or ill- formed their grasp is, however many mistakes they make. That’s how we learn any skill, but especially languages.
    
    If we have to have perfect accent and grammar before we open our mouths, we’ll never open them.

      Sadly there is are so few root words to learn. The grammar would be confusing particularly with all the social-relations pronouns . Polynesia is also moving to English grammar forms. TVNZ frequently used them. Seven tribes means seven dialects.

      No living language is spoken in the same accent and pronunciation uniformly.
      Think of the many UK accents. Imagine the difference between the Japanese Kanto-ben accent (imagine plumby 1970s BBC English) and Kansai-ben of Osaka (think Yorkshire English). What about English in the US of A?
      
      Maori is no different. To have the Te Reo police come down hard on those non-Maori who dare insult the Language of the Tangata-whenua will kill the native language like a bullet between the tonsils.

    Te Reo, the voice, is very poorly developed compared to Samoan or Tongan.
    
    It will be gone within 20 years. It’s inadequate for present use and the elders have rejected it. That only leaves treaty-wannabes as potential nominal users with insufficient teachers. As those teachers age too without support from the dead or dying generation their enthusiasm will wane too.

Then there is the “Property” management company who mostly specialisies in Commercial and Residential Real Estate in Greater Wellington who are said to be in financial trouble. Many of their contractors have not been paid in months. What is going on. Soon there will be a move to wind them up for not paying their contractors wages. Watch this space.

The Speaker has tabled a report which proposes a massive ($13 million) increase in funding for MPs, almost all of it to benefit Government MPs, [with] an automatic 3.3% to 3.7% increase every year.

So how is this increase justified when this Government is outsourcing so much policy innovation to committees and working groups (over 125 of them) to do the work that Labour, in particular, didn’t do in nine years of Opposition?

So this current misuse of taxpayer funding is to have a further level of taxpayer funding added to it without any real explanation what it is for.
And is it a little weird following so close on an Ardern captain’s call to freeze politicians pay?

One concession that could be granted is, that having set up all their committees, they do admittedly all have to soon start reporting back, but that excuse is a little lame when a lot of them will be returning decisions Government has already decided, so not such a big deal as it may seem.

Meanwhile
Young Auckland cops are eating 89 cent tins of baked beans for dinner at work, or being supplied food by their senior colleagues because they simply cannot afford life in the city on their current wages.

$13 million would buy a shitload (about 14.6 million cans) of baked beans for cops to go on.

Ok, I have absolutely nothing against protecting medical staff – I am all for it.

What I see a problem with is constant video surveillance of patients in hospitals.

I do not really believe this is done to protect staff.
If there was real interest in protecting staff, then HIV/Hepatitis status of would be be made available to staff to allow them to take more precaution around high risk patients. Nope, that info is not provided to protect patient confidentiality.

It also seems strange to me that such a controversial subject is being raised right now. Squirrel bomb maybe?

The show of the week has been watching the conformation hearing for Kavanaugh live on Youtube. The COL vs National battle is pussy slapping compared with the GOP vs Democrats ding dong going on over there. The Democrats have been caught paying “mad cat women” to yell and disrupt the hearing. They have asked for some 440,000 documents about Kavanaugh for the period when he work for president Bush. That is twice as many documents that were aked for for the last three nomination hearings combined. The questions the Democrats ask are mostly “When did you stop beating your wife” type ones or “what would you do if” questions. Great watching, two more days to go.

  I may have missed it Hugh, but I am surprised you have not commented on 3 of the big 4 banks in Australia raising mortgage rates. Westpac a few days ago and Commonwelth and ANZ over night. Small increases ( around 0.15%) but still it is an increase.

I just walked past a building in Wellington. There is a large conference room at ground level. About 30 people practicing Maori singing. Good on them. But, and I have seen this before, a few looked like they were really into it. But most of them looked to be in various degrees of discomfort, like they could not wait for it to end. These of course were all white people.

      Many of the young Germans fully believe in the green melon agenda, and that to be totally tolerant is to be divine.
      
      When the pressure comes on they will eventually become willing converts to a “religion of peace”, where they will happily move up that ladder of knowledge, to then ultimately enforce all those new laws and teachings.

Carpenters to be paid a living wage on 4 year construction site in Brisbane.

CARPENTERS working on Brisbane’s multibillion-dollar Queen’s Wharf project will get up to $288,500 a year to make sure they don’t strike.

The astonishing deal is contained in a confidential Enterprise Bargaining Agreement brokered by the CFMMEU and leaked yesterday to The Courier-Mail.

The wages are three times those earned by Queensland teachers and nurses.

The Courier-Mail can also reveal the workers will get a 5 per cent a year increase in their wages up until the completion of the project in 2022 – taking their salaries beyond $330,000 a year, more than what a Queensland Cabinet Minister earns.

If a carpenter is engaged on shift work and begins ordinary-hours work after 1pm, the 46-hour rate totals $288,500 a year, including super.

Apart from the fact that stuff can’t spell “Rimutaka” correctly 🙂 the photo of the intrepid police rescue squad going to rescue the poor chaps seems to show them heading south towards the coast? Apart from that the poor wee tramping luvies that got trapped for that long by not being able to cross the Orongorongo due to flooding could have easily walked down the same 4wd track the cops used back to the road!!!

    Fucking walked it forty years ago when the Orongorongo flooded nasska! All the way down from Bains to Orongorongo station, round the coast and halfway up the coast road till we hitched a ride. Took us two days as we had to camp for a night to drink our piss!

      Some like to speak with a large “plum in the mouth” as I was told by my father, who was told by his father, about the old father, who acted as a translator for Maori.
      
      He was bought up as a lad, on a river bank, and swimming in the the river with the locals who resided in a nearby pa.
      
      My grandfather as my Dad recalls, would startle some locals, by speaking the lingo, and be quite conversant.

        I don’t think they’d invented macronised Te Reo when the old boy wore khaki JB.
        
        He was employed in the Post & Telegraph offices as a telegraphist before the war. In the army you went where you were told & as a good morse operator he ended up in signals from 1940 onwards. Much of the time he spent at a communications post on Kaiti Hill with a couple of stints on Pacific islands.
        
        They were locked up for six (?) weeks at a time & only got leave when the codes were changed. I do know that when the war ended he didn’t want to hear another dit or dot for the rest of his life & ended up working for a stock & station agency.
        
        From what I can remember of what he told me he learnt Maori from fellow servicemen to break the monotony.

        It’s the price paid for the Maorification of everything Maggy. If it didn’t directly involve the Tangata Whenua then it might as well not have happened. My older brother inherited all of Dads WW2 personal papers & a couple of diaries. He’s undertaken to pass them on to the Gisborne RSA to do as they see fit with them so I dare say they’ll be available for research.
        
        The interesting thing about personal records is that they give insight to the thoughts & consequent actions of the time. From modern history we can learn every detail of a battle but understand little about why people engaged in it.
