Patrick Gower: So my first question tonight is to you, Bill English. A key part of leadership is trust and whether voters can trust you. So is it possible to survive politics without lying?

[Bill English answers the question and 2 follow-up questions. Then it’s Jacinda Ardern’s turn. She’s had plenty of time to prepare her answer to the same question]

Patrick Gower: Ok, Jacinda Ardern, you haven’t been tested on these sorts of trust issues that Bill English has been confronted with. But if you are caught in a lie, or caught intentionally misleading the New Zealand public, how would you expect to be held to account?

Jacinda Ardern: Well, I actually believe that it is possible to exist in politics without lying, and by telling the truth. I do believe that. I have been in politics for 9 years. Yes, politicians make mistakes, but the true mark of leadership is whether you front those mistakes, be as transparent as possible with the public when you make them. That’s the sign of good leadership.

Patrick Gower: You’ve never told a lie in politics?

Jacinda Ardern: No. No. And if I have made a mistake, I fronted it. I’m going to make them in the future, too, Paddy, let’s be clear. But it’s all about fronting them when you do.

Jacinda said she makes mistakes, but doesn’t tell lies. She also said that “the sign of good leadership” when you make mistakes.is to be “as transparent as possible with the public”.

      The next to go should be Mallard.
      
      Biased incompetence personified although he does have good knowledge of the rules of the house that are sometimes misapplied to provide the red team an unfair advantage.
      
      Woods or martin next week would be good although the whole incompetent clusterfuck in an early general election would be my most optimistic hope.
      
      The bird bath is shallow, there are no other rising stars that could spell portfolio let alone be the minister of one.

        But Swifty it is interesting how little snipets of detail are added such situations when we read in one recent piece. It has been sidelined by the unusual but normal MO for Labour to be the subject of an inquiry long enough to be not only made confusing but less significant. While most might have assumed it was a male member of her staff that got pushed it seems it was in fact a female or more pointedly a female by birth. The writer referred to it as becoming a “she said, she said” situation after enough concealment. It adds a new element to the issue again raising the question if Mega Fittery is fit to hold any warrant unless it is an arrest warrant. Likewise the plot thickens a lot more as we read the victim is not pushing any charges of assault? We further wonder if the subsequent “conversation” had with the victim was about career path being short or her passion path?

      Also no point in moving a vote of no confidence unless you have the numbers first. Simon would need to pick off 4 or so COL MP’s before a no confidence vote is viable.

        Right peterwn much more is being gained by standing slightly aside as they individually and collectively show their true worth while being ready to give the swing a little push as it slows. Even the Curran sage that took so long to finally end her short flight has born unexpected bonuses. With her inept handling of the ending the silly little girl jumped right into the spotlight by of all things wanting to look like Miss Goody Two Shoes only to find they are on the wrong feet. Now when the next step is left her baby brain condition can only see her left shoe as being right and her right as being left with indecision again making progress a challenge.
        On top of this there is a power play being carried out that surfaced this week as expected it would eventually so no let the attack dogs do their job and move on to the next scalp. In order to spread it around fairly Martin is next on the list as we have already seen how she so quickly appeals to the Speaker to rescue her too. Guessing the silly little girl will use Fightery to show she is a “strong” leader. Tui anybody?

    Thanks LTA1955 for raising the real elephant in the caucus room ad what seems to be at the heart of their “stuff ups”. From what they seem to think are their best “best” person in so many key roles we only see a sad line up of wannabe failures as they struggle to achieve gender equality. Unfortunately it starts right from the top both alphabetical as well as by level of responsibility that their chosen ones are all turkeys trying to fly. Perhaps it is their skirts creating too much drag or their uncomfortable shoes that make even running downhill into a stiff southerly keeping them from reaching levitation speed. Or for some it is apparent that too much excess baggage is already on-board with a stout belt around it.
    Whatever the drawback that leaves them flightless it is often the number of “stuff ups” that sees them failing to sore in flight even called back off the runway. It is most notable how quick the Media party are to defend their incompetence as they rush to say “everybody has a bad day or make mistakes.” That won’t fly either as it is too many making altogether making too many as their leader sets the standard so low with her distinct leadership style. Especially calling up a massive aircraft to get back in the clouds then the following by a sickie the next day to get under the radar. Seems readership is more important than leadership following on from all those photo ops grabbed on such a short trip. But they all still “believe they can fly”?

  Jacinda Ardern is being cute with the truth. Her truthiness is now forever suspect and the media know it, which is why her stupidity is now the focus after Curran fell on her sword.
  
  There have been a few comments that Ardern knew, in advance, of Curran’s intention to contact Hirchsfeld, and may have even suggested it, as being perhaps one way around the obvious intransigency of Griffin and others to the Labour policy of RNZ+, the new television channel Labour proposes.
  
  Was Ardern aware of a possible communication or meeting between Curran and Hirchsfeld before it actually occurred?
  
  Is omitting the fact Curran had already resigned, when asked about firing her, the first omission Ardern has made in the whole issue?
  Has Melissa Lee actually got as far as she could have in the questions she could have asked?

    I don’t think that she had gone as far as she could have, but could continue with whoever replaced Curran in any of her portfolios. For example:
    
    “Would it be acceptable for a Minister of broadcasting to use her private email account to offer increased funding to State television and radio, in return for favourable news and editorial coverage of the government?”

    Clearly every answer that Jacinda gave was correct. She was not considering firing Curran and Curran jumped rather than was pushed. In both tone and context her answers were correct.
    
    Perhaps she could have volunteered the information that Curran had tendered her resignation but allowing Curran the ability to announce it herself is the sort of thing a compassionate leader would do.

      This works both ways for the questioner and the questioned.
      
      If Chris Lynch knew that Curran had resigned, would he have asked the question?
      
      I know this instance hasn’t worked in Jacinda’s favour, but it goes on all of the time.
      
      The media just don’t ask Jacinda the hard questions, they either already know the answer and it doesn’t suit their narrative, so they don’t ask the question.
      
      I think Jacinda should have owned it, I am sure that I read that Curran confirmed her resignation on the Thursday night, so that suggests that there had been prior discussion.

The past three days have seen a momentous shift in the nation’s political situation. I think we are seeing the beginning of the end of the coalition of incompetents.
The installed PM, the totally inept Jacinda Ardern, has been rudely exposed as someone without the slightest clue as to how to deal with employment issues, never mind inept Ministers who have been promoted way beyond their level of competence.
How the Hell do you accept a resignation one evening, then the next morning tell the world that the person’s job is safe? This is amateurism beyond belief.
Meanwhile the wily old wrinkled prune sits back and says nothing, knowing that when Jacinda finally cracks (and she will) he will be in the box seat to take the reins. And he knew all the time that this would be the result of his post-election decision.
We are in for interesting times.
The best thing we can hope for is that the Nats are ready for an early election.

  Agreed, Captain. Ardern’s disastrous week of leadership failures, indecisiveness and even misleading of the public is now behind her. She has had the weekend to absorb some decent political and PR advice (if she has any able advisors still available to her) and to attempt to present the Coalition that she leads as capable of governing NZ.
  
  What will this week bring for a Government that is reeling from its largely self-inflicted wounds? Will it be more ego-driven divisiveness internally, or can the Coalition develop a clear strategy for reassembling its forces to present a cohesive and purposeful front? Does it even understand the political imperative for doing so?
  
  Nothing should be impossible to rectify, of course. But on the evidence so far the chances are that this Government will fall into further disarray, struggling on in a vacuum of sound leadership until voters can have their own decisive say. None of this is in the interests of our country – which will pay the ultimate price of the Coalition’s incompetence and fractious personalities.

      Right Ross12 but we must wonder are the Media party avoiding a frontal challenge with direct hard questions knowing how quick the silly little girl will let something slip with all those word showers? It has been like that but has increased since the baby arrives as her mind is not always where it should be. This in such an empty cavity has room for the things she has been told to “not” mention override what she should endeavor to actually say. Meanwhile they hope against hope that the foot and mouth stay well apart as only her PR team have the will to cut the slips, wides and no balls.

It failed only to ring the change they worked so hard to tell us was taking place with a new “direction”. Now they are finding that it is in fact shit creek they are being led up though not new they still have the map they used to get around it last time. But even in this modern times they still do not understand their map is just a circular track to paraphrase that old song “On the Road To Gonna Die”.   I’d love to believe that you are right, Captain…. but I’ve hardly met anybody outside the hallowed halls of KiwiBlog who has any idea about what the ‘government’ is up to – or if they do, they don’t seem to give a fuck.
  
  As I don’t watch the TV ‘news’ or the laughable ‘current affairs’ programmes on mainstream TV, I don’t really have a good perception of the general public’s feeling about these traitorous corrupt assholes who have been handed power by that cunt Peters.

    I am biased but I try to keep my ears open for dissent. I am sensing women whom I know fell for Jacinda have turned from the Ardern. She is failing their gold test of showing she is a capable manager.
    They have begun speaking the unspeakable that this will a one term government.
    
    The opposition may need nothing better than to keep fielding the Melissas and prepare policy in the backgound. Simon is very adequate when he needs to debate. The media won’t give him a platform but Ardern is losing hers to scorn.

While at the same time oil prices have started to edge up again meaning not just a double fault and changing ends for service but new balls as well. I went down to the Patent Office trying to register some of my inventions earlier today. I walked up to the main desk to sign in and the lady pulled out a form to fill out. She asked for my personal info, wrote it down and then asked me what I had invented. I said, ‘A folding bottle.’ She said, ‘Okay. What do you call it?’ ‘A fottle.’ ‘What else do you have there?’ ‘A folding carton.’ ‘OK, what do you call it?’ ‘A farton.’ She chuckled and said, ‘Those are silly names for products and one of them sounds a bit crude.’ I was so upset by her comment I grabbed the form and left the office without even telling her about my folding bucket…

In this week’s Below the beltway, I’d have to disagree with two of Tracy Watkins assessments.

Putting Phil Twyford in the UP column is being very generous. Sure, the first few KiwiBuild houses are about to be sold, but its only 18. The promise was 10,000 over three years. You can argue construction takes time to ramp up, and to a large extent that’s fair. But still, we’re a third of the way in and only 18 out of 10,000 houses built. There is a serious risk of Twyford being percieved as over-promising and under-delivering.

The other one I disagree with is putting Winston Peters in the DOWN column. Why? Sure, the disagreement with Labour over refugees didn’t look great for Jacinda Ardern or the coalition as a whole. But it will have gone down brilliantly with NZ First voters, both by pandering to their xenophobia (keeping those nasty foreigners and brown people out) and by making Winston look strong and in charge. I’m sure Peters has absolutely no regrets about his actions and would gladly do the same thing again.

  Housing Corp had to refresh old retiring stock so chose to sell much of it off.
  
  It’s going to take a genius to organise and fund the masssive dream program. There will be balance of payments implications and a likely GFC to dodge. Grant R. may be facing nightmares.

  I agree with those who don’t want NZ to take in more very dubious “refugees”.
  
  As an aside I watched Lauren Southern on YouTube visit the refugee camp at Calais, France. She noted that all of the refugees were men. There were about 6 women in the whole camp and about 3 children.
  
  A mainstream media reporter duly interviewed the children, he rounded up the only 3 children in the camp, as if they were representative of the people at the camp?!
  
  The other anomaly was that these people are supposed to be fleeing war in Syria. Lauren Southern said she took a while to actually find a Syrian. Most of them were from Africa or Afghanistan.
  
  So there’s a lot of bulldust surrounding “refugees” and for once I agree with Winston Peters. We should be very wary of taking more of them in.

Beside the old drunk who we know of old is just protecting his own patch by flexing his diminished muscle. His move this week was no better than his weak attempts of humor in question time. The only difference is that little turn to his audience around him as the signal to laugh. A couple of weeks ago I posted asking somewhat tongue in cheek if anyone wanted to open a book on the COL not lasting the distance and if so which month would it fold.

After the past week I ask again only this time more seriously.

I dont know the answer but I cant think of a Government in the past 50 years I have been following politics that has looked so shaky after such a short time.

    I still believe this Government will go full term for the following reasons:
    – Labour/Green MPs are so desperate to keep themselves out of opposition they will do anything and give up anything – we are already seeing this in their bowing down to Winston’s wants.
    – Winston does not want to bow out of politics in a losing way – so he will continue to manipulate JA to his desires.
    – JA is so weak that she will let her MPs get away with anything – we are seeing this with the arrogance from Twyford and Clark in particular. Even Curran was still hanging on and moving to the backbenches is no great loss to the COL.
    – The Greens won’t do anything to jeopardise their position in the COL – because they know deep down that it will not come to them again in a long, long time.
    
    I also repeat my belief that unless National finds a respected support party, they will struggle to win in 2020. Labour and NZF will manipulate an electoral result in their favour – ie: do an Epsom – to ensure that even if NZF falls below 5%, they will retain a place via a seat.

        My view is that COL is doing just that–loosing the next election.
        I have never seen the MSM turn so rapidly previously.
        
        Women voters have been very sensitive to a govts ability to manage–it probably impacts their perception about security needed for themselves and their families. Maybe Ardern believes she is sufficient and that having a women at the top of govt is a substitute for necessary management. Maybe the sisterhood can contract out management demand like running a call centre? Ardern’s delusion may not be fragile but many voters are if their security is felt to be threatened.

        Not so long ago, I’d have agreed with you; however, I went to a meeting the other day, hosted by these two. What an embarrassment: Bishop was looking like an early David Lange in his ‘slob’ days, whilst Collins appeared to be doing a stand-up comedienne act, something like a poor man’s Jo Brand. Sure, it was a get-together for “Superblues” (God, that’s patronising!), but nothing of substance was aired; what’s more, Collins was disingenuously trying to get a laugh about Winston Peters’ apparent volte face over the Maori seats (when she must have known full well what his strategy was – get the Bill to Select Committee, and there insert a clause to mandate a binding referendum.). Those of us who are elderly, but not yet in our dotage, don’t appreciate being treated as simpletons. If Collins has any aspirations to lead National, she’s going to have to work on restoring her gravitas, and treat potential voters with a bit more respect.

      Dave; we are seeing right now what happens when an opposition isn’t prepared to govern. National can’t make any assumptions about the coalition not lasting the distance, so have to plan on the basis of an election being held around two years from now.
      
      I’m involved with my local branch in the policy area, and I can assure you that there is plenty of work going on behind the scenes from grassroots members through to the caucus and leadership. National will have a suite of strong and robust policies, but it is way too early in the cycle to announce anything.
      
      And if the PM has to go to the country early because Peters has once again brought down his own government, National will be ready, I assure you. Accept the reality that any opposition finds it hard to get media time, but especially so when there’s a new government, a popular leader, and in this case, a baby.
      
      National is not a one-man band. You can’t say that about either Labour or Winston First.

Kids at local pre-school discover birds nest in garden.
Forensic investigation of nest reveals several pieces of – wait for it – PLASTIC – used in its construction.
Staff shocked to see impact of plastic on bird life.
Someone should tell these birds about evil plastic and scold them for endangering their young by using it to insulate nests.
Such is life in the provinces. No Curran, Farage or Golriz.

  Nest building birds are great recyclers. We often chop up left over knitting wool and leave it out for the birds, and the hair from de-clogging the hairbrushes is put out in the garden too.
  I hadn’t thought of shredding the plastic bags.

    Perhaps VP but as other point out it is part of the bird life to build a new nest each year in most species. However they are quite clever if one takes the time to enjoy their skill, energy, industriousness, wisdom and adaptability. They need anybody to tell them plastic is weatherproof just like they don’t need to be told it is bad. To them and even many cleaver people they know it is recyclable in so many ways it might be a wonder product.

      I’m no bigot. I worked 7 years in the Pacific and could speak and check a translation from a current national language for law drafting. My loyalties lay with the locals not the outsider’s clique.
      
      Maori (te reo) bothers me because the language has not developed. I enjoy hearing the formal language spoken but that is reserved to a select few and holds the genealogies.
      
      It is not possible to develop te reo to where it would be useful relative to English for communication. Effectively we would end up with 90% transliterated borrowings and a hybrid Maori-English grammar. This issue has cropped up in education and resolved by teaching both languages with English becoming the common language for these technical times.
      In NZ the elders foresaw this in the 1930. They encouraged the use of English as the preferred way ahead. With the limited words and teachers I am sensing the language falling into disuse except on the marae.

        It wouldn’t – Maori was a fully-functional language for a long time before English-speakers turned up. Its grammar will certainly and probably already has been affected by English, just through the sheer dominance of English and the relative shortage of native Maori speakers, much like English grammar has been affected by other languages over the centuries. It doesn’t need to borrow from English to have fully-functional grammar though, any more than English needed to have its grammar changed by other languages that influenced it.

        Samoa and Tonga each have 3 spoken languages, Maori too. There is a formal language used in Church or by people of special rank on appropriate occasions; another for general use and a further one, a “street” language in common use.
        This third variant was having “k” substituted for “t” and the simpler English grammar form was also in use. e.g. O te wahine tenei became o te tenei wahine. (The woman this –>this woman). These grammatical changes have been heard frequently on Maori media segments here.
        Polynesian also has complex set of pronouns implicitly setting relationships, the numbers of people involved and whether the message is being received or sent.

        Three spoken “languages”, KevOB, or three variants of one? Even in English, we are taught that there is a formal way of writing that has stricter rules than conversational English.
        From what you are saying, contact with English has, not surprisingly, produced some modification in Maori, but that’s how languages develop. English itself has become all the richer from such contact (especially in terms of vocabulary). Maori had already changed from the language spoken by its original settlers, and, I imagine was developing regional variants as we still see throughout the UK.
        From what I can see, William Hobson would find modern English odd, especially in terms of vocabulary and idiom.

      Yep – languages change with time – probably a little slower nowadays with more established conventions for spelling and suchlike – but change they do. American English and UK English (itself a delightful mishmash of regional variations) grew apart, but perhaps have come together again a bit more with global media (the spellchecker here seems to think I am in the USA). I wonder if William Hobson would have recognised the word “cookie” as a biscuit (which is more like a scone in the US, I think) and obviously not as a component of communication software. Would he have had a “fly” on his pants (or would he have called them trousers – I doubt he wore “jeans” – he’d probably have thought you were accusing him of cross dressing)?

Most countries, NZ included, will benefit greatly from that much warming, and the 2mm/year sea level rise (consistent for last 100+ years) is only an issue for a few low-lying river delta countries like netherlands and bangladesh.
