    Was actually due to NZD fall from April on. Get initial rise in GDP from higher farm earnings, but a bigger GDP drop 3 months later as high inflation from expensive imports filters in. GDP for next quarter will suck.

        Yeah it will hit service sector hard and that is where our government gets most of their revenue from.
        I’m really proud of NZ sheep industry who have managed to keep increasing yearly export revenue despite a decline in overall stock numbers. We don’t get the best to work with but what we do have available we make the most of.
        That and the Left wing loons seem to leave us alone and go after beef and dairy farmers 🙂

  Their latest shenanigans is to stop President Trump’s latest Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanagh. The media and the Democrats have been looking for anything to smear the character of Justice Kavanagh. And they found something! That someone back in high school reckons that he groped her at a party when she was 15 and he was 17.
  
  Oh my goodness – stop everything – this man obviously cannot serve on the Supreme Court!!
  
  I would be interested to know what other people think? Even if he did do this, and it is by no means certain that he did, should this disqualify him? In other words if you do a bad thing when you are 17 and then live an impeccable moral life, should that forever bar you from higher office? It’s an interesting moral question?

    That’s so general, Scott, it is hard to give a yes or no answer. In part, it depends on what you mean by a “bad thing”. If, say, an ex-friend came forward and said Kavanagh had been driving the car in a previous unsolved “hit and run”, I’d expect he would be toast – as a much as anything because he’d hidden it all these years. Allegations of sexual assault, such as this one, are notoriously difficult to judge – I would hate to be on a jury deciding a sexual assault or rape case (unless it was very clear cut).
    
    That said, I wouldn’t want to be judged now for some of the stupid things that I said and did as a 17-year-old.
    
    There is, of course, another thing, isn’t there? Kavanagh has denied any sort of incident at all (is that right?). If that denial doesn’t stack up, and if it appears he has been economical with the truth, then he will be judged for that as well.

      The two witnesses Ford alleged were there have come forward and said they have never seen Kavanaugh involved in any such incident.
      One wasn’t accused by Ford as being involved so is independent.
      Bearing in mind Ford can’t remember when and where it happened.
      Her School Year Books have also been scrubbed from the Internet- which is hardly the act of an innocent party.
      However someone kept a copy.

      I suppose though he could have driven a car off a bridge and then left his companion to die some hours later because he wanted his blood alcohol level to drop before reporting the crash. That would be pretty damning – for a Republican anyway – wouldn’t it ?
      
      What if two women came forward with very credible allegations of domestic violence complete with precise times, dates, and places, backed up by contemporary medical and 911 call reports – that would be career ending – for a Republican.
      
      Then we look at the veracity of the complainant in the Kavanaugh case. The allegations are vague, the only real detail is the name of the supposed assailant and of one other person said to be present. No time or place is provided. There are no contemporaneous records of any sort, no medical evidence (just a psychological counselling event some 30 odd years after the alleged incident), and no police records of any sort. There’s also the persistent rumour that the same allegation was made by the same person against Judge Gorsuch. It is also interesting that the complainant scrubbed all her social media, and also attempted to scrub the yearbooks from her time at college when the incident is said to have occurred. Unfortunately for her the yearbook data has been preserved and and it does show that the culture at the school was a wild, sex and alcohol dominated party time with frequent references to memory gaps due to passing out at parties. The game “Pass Out” is mentioned several times, just for info.
      
      To summarize, this is not a credible allegation and is, just IMHO, a paid for smear being used to block Kavanaugh “by any means possible”.

      SGA – fair comment. To go from the general to the specific, the specific charge is that at the age of 17 Brett Kavanagh groped the 15-year-old girl through her clothing at a party. There is no allegation of rape.
      
      Given those facts I actually don’t care if he did it or not? That’s my point. If everyone who has ever groped a girl when they were a teenager, that is held against them forever, how many people could stand that level of scrutiny?
      
      Because I am a Christian I believe in forgiveness and 2nd chances.
      
      Unfortunately the leftist Revolutionary doesn’t believe in any of those things. The me too movement is really a backlash against the whole sexual revolution and the culture of sexual license. Now those that were involved in sexual license are being prosecuted by a movement that is harsher than anything we have seen before.
      
      So I think we need to get back to Christian morals. We understand that people can do stupid things but if you do a stupid thing then repent, tell God you are sorry and receive forgiveness.
      
      What shouldn’t happen is that a teenaged indiscretion is for ever held against a person. That is just morally wrong in my opinion.

    It looks like it is all going to come unraveled for the Dems if this rumour has any truth to it.
    
    Activists, reporters, and White House officials are consumed with a barrage of rumors, hearsay and tantalizing tips about a Supreme Court nominee and his accuser.
    
    It is the tweet that launched a thousand rumors.
    
    On Tuesday evening, Ed Whelan, a conservative activist and legal commentator, posted a remarkable claim about the charge of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
    
    “By one week from today, I expect that Judge Kavanaugh will have been clearly vindicated on this matter,” Whelan wrote. “Specifically, I expect that compelling evidence will show his categorical denial to be truthful. There will be no cloud over him.”
    
    In a follow up tweet, he added for good measure: “Senator [Dianne] Feinstein will soon be apologizing to Judge Kavanaugh.” Feinstein is the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee and the first senator to learn about the accusation against Kavanaugh.
    
    Whelan, who is president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, has since remained cryptically tight-lipped. But his tweet, along with the perception that he is a sober-minded straight shooter, triggered intense speculation among conservatives and even White House aides about whether he had information that could acquit Kavanaugh.

    Whelan is supposed to be a ‘straight-shooter’ and not given to hyperbole so everyone is waiting to see what will happen. Speculation abounds though… Was Kavanaugh out of the country at the time of the incident? Does another witness remember something? The GOP have been interviewing people from that time period right, left, and center while Dems have refused any and all offers to take part.
    
    Within hours of learning Dr. Ford’s identity from press reports on Sunday Chairman Grassley took swift action making contact w the alleged witnesses. Dems haven’t joined background investigation of Dr. Ford’s allegations. It’s our constitutional duty to do investigations. Join us
    
    Democrats sat on Dr. Ford’s allegations for MONTHS & did nothing. They STILL haven’t turned over the original letter they received from Dr. Ford. Why would Dems sit on allegations for months and then not even participate in the Committee’s investigation?
    
    On Monday, staff interviewed Judge Kavanaugh under penalty of felony. Democratic staff was invited and could have asked any question of Judge Kavanaugh. They declined to participate.
    
    Staff contacted Mark Judge and obtained a statement under penalty of felony. Staff contacted third person allegedly at party described by Dr. Ford and obtained a statement under penalty of felony. Staff contacted fourth person allegedly at party.
    
    Staff have contacted a schoolmate who claimed on social media this week to have info related to Dr. Ford’s allegations. Committee has not yet heard back.
    
    The committee invited Dr. Ford for bipartisan interview by Republican and Democratic staff to obtain her testimony and any evidence she considers relevant. First reached out on Monday, but her lawyers haven’t agreed to an interview.
    
    Her attorneys say there needs to be an investigation, which is exactly what the committee has been doing all week. And we would love to hear from Dr. Ford. Democratic staff is invited to participate fully every step of the way.

  Plastic is made from oil don’t you know, must be bad. My daughter in law gets her groceries delivered from Countdown in hugely thick cumbersome paper bags. Plastic bags were much better, I am sure that she is paying per bag.

  In Ardern’s absence, Minister of Justice Little needs to undergo a public grilling on this latest example of institutionalised racism. And the Opposition should develop a co-ordinated strategy for dealing with it in the House – perhaps including a Private Member’s Bill aimed at preventing repetition of this injustice (and probably exposing at the same time the Coalition Government’s comfort with this kind of racism.)

  The trouble with this decision is that it is – apart from being blatantly racist – a good example of just how thick some of the legal profession can be. The judge has effectively said that Maori, as an ethno-racial group, suffered because of colonisation (a claim that’s by no means beyond dispute); so he then extrapolated from the general to the particular – the case before him – and said that a discounted sentence must apply, for no reason other than that the offender was Maori. This decision is morally repugnant.
  What it does is to set a precedent, because the judiciary are obliged to take into account previous sentencing practice when pronouncing judgement. It’s a slippery slope of the worst sort.
  Can we please have a colour-blind country? Is that too much to ask?

    They suffer from lousy parenting and violence in the home.
    The second one is a direct result of the chauvinism in their culture that makes many Maori males think they have the right to bash and terrorize their wives and kids.
    They have Pakeha culture and the rule of law it introduced to thank for protecting them from the worst excesses of this.

  “Capital income” was also referred to. A novel concept in tax case law. Income is what you live off: capital is the substance generating income. Inflation and values may change the amounts of capital but the substance itself remains unchanged. Hence the old rule to tax the fruit not the tree.

    The 99 page report by Alan Reynolds, for the Australian Stock Exchange, makes difficult but interesting reading.
    A couple of conclusions
    It is disproportionately against the elderly:
    Who are on a fixed income and only have capital assets to rely on.
    It restricts entrepreneurship:
    By taxing capital, it discourages investment in business.
    Because of complicated legislation required, it restricts growth in business by increasing compliance cost (and in my opinion confidence to expand)

      Taxing capital prevents savings for expansion. The fruit from a tree when sold produces income. Some of that has to be saved to buy/plant a second tree which will produce more income.

What is this I hear that it is offensive for people to display their tattoos in Japan? After a quick google, it appears that it’s offensive to _some_ Japanese people, but I also read that tattooing has a _long_ history in Japan. It appears that many people get tattooed in Japan, and not always because they’re Yakuza – sometimes just because they think it’s cool.
Is it _really_ that offensive to Japanese people if tattoos are on show? Or is it a bit like people wearing burkhas in NZ – offensive to some, but meh to the rest of us?

  Well I never saw a tattooed person in Japan. My impression is that a sizeable minority freak out but they are generally older people. I doubt most young people give a shit.

I suppose that if the only time Japanese people see tattoos is on a Yakuza member (because everybody else hides theirs), they could make the logical leap that you must be Yakuza if you have a tattoo (I really don’t think they’re that dumb though).

  I got the impression it might be reasonably widespread. In a conversation with someone who was going to some sort of public spa (or similar), I commented that I might try that sometime. Ms Ardern has seen the final report – on which she’s based her decision to strip Ms Whaitiri of her portfolios – but the public will have to wait until the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) has been through it before they get to see it.
She will not say what happened, only that Ms Whaitiri still disputes the allegation against her.

  This is what I posted on page about Whaitiri in response to cmm earlier.
  
  Whaitiri was thrown under a bus by Ardern as a squirrel diversion. If, you look at yesterday’s questions in the House and responses from Ardern, she is deep in it and was hiding behind exact words. The OIAs (could prove revealing).
  
  I believe I have seen this before , and I don’t think it will end happily for the CoL. We are seeing a definite parallel here with 30 years ago. What we are seeing now has many parallels with that period when Lange called time of Rogernomics and said “it was time to call for a cup of tea”.
  As with 1988 we have seen two ministers sacked (then it was Douglas & Preeble) who challenged Lange’s authority & made him look weak. After weeks of Lange’s authority being furthered eroded in the press, he called it quits and we ended up with Palmer. In the current context we’ve seen Ardern’s status eroded by events, in a similar manner to Lange’s. Curran & Whaitiri were unfortunate, but Ardern is involved in Handley & if it is to the extent of being involved in his recruitment, she is a goner. If Ardern goes, there is only one replacement and that is Robertson. Which will be history repeating Palmer’s leadership.
  
  Further, as with 1988 the govt & the PM is now in a weakened position, so we are going to see more leaking and grandstanding by CoL MPs in the media. In 1988, you had Douglas/Preeble & associates and on the other side you had Anderton. Today, we have the Greens and NZF. The Greens will not want to go down with Labour, so I’m expecting them to stand their ground – my bet is the waka jumping bill may take on water and sink now. As for NZF, they are determined to be in govt & prove they are a good govt partner, hence why Winston gave way on the refugees. However, he will not want the Greens furthering their causes at the expense of the CoL . So, expect some further in fighting.
  
  However, as we know with 1988-90, it ended in years for the then government, so I’m expecting it to do so again. Finally, if the pressure on Ardern is ratcheted up further and is sustained I expect her to throw in the towel by Christmas.

  It recommends that a LOW rate is best.
  Since Australia have had CGT since the mid 80’s.
  We could extrapolate that if the lower the tax rate the better……then Zero would be best, if you already have a CGT.

      People were evicted from state houses and in some cases lost their possessions because some self serving contractors detected what transpired to be harmless amounts of residue.
      Furthermore.
      Private landlords were, in some cases, put to unnecessary expense to ‘decontaminate’ their property.

If the Nats want to win in 2020 they need to do the following;
1. Give a John Key (retirement age) guarantee there will be no change to CGT ( we have had a CGT since the 1956 Income Tax Act,
2. Repeal the increase in refugees back to 750 per year.
3. Index personal tax thresholds to inflation.
4. Reinstate the Nats tax cuts dropped by the COL.

IMHO this would see them close to or over the 50 points and able to govern alone.

Bring back Stable Government.

BTW. The media the pollies and those outside business cant/dont understand why business confidence dropped and keeps on dropping.

It started at the time the COL cancelled the oil and gas industry literally over night without consultation.

Business people need to plan ahead in order to have a successful business.

I have worked in businesses that had a 3 year 5 year 10 year…………out to a 30 year business plan.

Now the further out the more general they get but you need to have some indication from the current Government of what their policies are going to be and most of all as in the oil and gas debacle No Surprises.

In fact Cabinet has a No Surprises Rule as regards the CEOs of Government departments and organisations.

So when a Government is making policy on the fly changing policy on the hoof and generally gives the impression it doesnt whats its doing little wonder that business confidence goes thru the floor.

And now we have consumer confidence at its lowest level since 2012 on the back of business confidence.

At this point in a new Governments life if it is governing competently then even if business doesnt like that Government confidence should be at worst stable or slightly lower.

      P I crime rates are similar to the average.
      That’s because most P I women are devoted mothers and do their best to raise their kids well.
      Many of them put up with considerable abuse from their kids’ father in order to give their kids a secure upbringing.
      Plus they value education and have a strong work ethic.
      Thuggish Maori youngsters (and others) are just replaying what they have learned in their homes.
      It’s very sad for all concerned.
      And could be prevented if we stopped patronising Maori and applied the tough many of them need.

I have had some recent experience with our Education system.

A nephew of mine has recently turned 15 and is in the process of getting level 1. He has however decided to leave school without that qualification.

His experience is like this.
He had a maths teacher who by all accounts was doing his best to be a good teacher. He however was Indian with a strong accent. My nephew and the rest of the class struggled to understand what he was saying. The system failed to pick up that my nephew and other students were struggling. The system just moves on and they get left behind.
He has a new math teacher now. She effectively turns up and doesn’t bother teaching. The class involves a cellphone use period.

He has given up on school. He is enrolling in more of a specialist course with 1:8 ratios that actually prepare him for life. Drivers licence, tractor and digger use, health and safety, 4 wheeler use, maths and literacy, etc. He will get level one in the course, over less time.
He will then do another specialist course that trains for police, military, security careers that will give him level 2.

I also had an experience from the same school when a friend arrived with her upset daughter. She had a dream of becoming a Nurse and science is a must pass. They were doing physics and the daughter just didn’t get it. She expressed this to the teacher. The teacher said “too bad, if you weren’t listening or cant figure it out, it’s your problem.” 2 hours later with some tutoring she could understand what the teacher was saying. Irony is her maths let her down badly so I taught the concepts instead. But she could have just as easily slipped though the cracks. Or the chasm.

And high school teachers want more?

  You don’t need school qualifications to be educated or to go to university etc. Neither of my kids ever went to school. Both now have degrees (Computer Science and Mech Eng).
  
  As for quality of schools teaching science and maths etc, yup I’ve seen that too. I gave two kids who were failing maths badly a one-day tutoring session that got them B passes.
  
  Somehow 12 years of school teachers costing hundreds of thousands couldn’t achieve what I did in one day – for free!
  
  I’m not saying all teachers are crap. Just the majority.

    So it’s my nephew who’s mother I get to see most days. Doesn’t sound like gossip. In fact his looking at other options, talked about for a year or two was my idea rather than him just leaving school and getting some low wage job.
    
    Also I don’t drink so got that wrong as well.
    I left out other issues with teachers that he has had. One is so appalling he was removed from the school. First hand experiences are slightly different from gossip.
    
    I’ve noticed you often attack the credibility of the person but have little credible input into the conversation. That’s not the best way to prove something I’ve said is false, or an exaggeration.
    
    Obviously since we have world best, high literacy and numeracy, low dropout rates, gender equal tertiary education etc that we have no issues then.

  Since power spend was at its lowest it’s hard to make a high price argument or falsely atribute blame on renewables. The research makes it clear the issue is with low income, mostly solo mums etc.
  
  The suppliments were for those low income groups. Trump cut it and the article is a Trump hit job. Supplementing those people subsidises all producers of power. Not just renewables. Like we do with our subsidy. Rent subsidies go to corporate parasitic landlords as well as the one rental retired landlord.
  
  Then you mention mandated levies. Why is it the solar and wind companies are creating wind, hydrothermal, and solar projects without subsidies, creating contracts at lower rates than current prices?

Emirates potentially taking over its unprofitable cousin Etihad

Dubai’s flagship airline Emirates is looking at taking over unprofitable neighbour Etihad, according to four people familiar with the matter, in a move that would create the world’s biggest carrier by passenger traffic.

The talks, which are at a preliminary stage, would see Emirates acquire the main airline business of Abu Dhabi’s Etihad, which would keep its maintenance arm, according to the people, who asked not to be named because the matter is confidential. The negotiations could yet fall through, they said.

Both airlines initially declined to comment, before later denying that any talks were underway. Were a transaction to go ahead the enlarged airline operation would be bigger than that of American Airlines, which has a market value of $US19.2 billion ($26.3 billion).

I do a bit of flying. This could be interesting in terms of traffic to/from NZ.

As for the negotiations ‘falling over’, there’s no love lost between the respective ruling houses – Al Falasi (Dubai) and Al Falahi (Abu Dhabi) – so its certainly not a done deal.

Al Falahi bailed out Al Falasi as the GFC took a hold. Dubai had all the debt, and Abu Dhabi had all the oil. Rumour at the time was the House of Al Falahi wanted Emirates as part of the security.

      When Britain took most of our lamb kill the race was on to produce a lamb that could be killed early enough to reach their Xmas market.
      
      I was under contract to supply X no. of lambs of a certain weight during a specified time frame (ie fat lambing) & therefore bought in weaned lambs to grow on. Nevertheless my breeding stock still lambed mid August.
      
      Without writing a book about the subject there are two factors at play. One….ewes don’t cycle until the days start to shorten then once they’re in lamb they won’t drop for approx 147 days. Two….for the first four weeks they’re largely dependent on the ewe’s milk. Ideally the lamb should start to graze just when the grass hits its early spring growth (when the protein level is the highest).
      
      The cocky can play around a bit with dates but overall nature dictates.

        Not really. A ewe’s cycle is 17 days & estrus only last for a day. The length of the day (or in my opinion the colour of the light passing through the atmosphere) dictates when estrus occurs & its not an off/on switch.
        
        Put the rams out too early & they’ll nail a few early cyclers…..too late & there’s a chance that you’ll miss some who have finished cycling. In any case ongoing management dictates that you want lambing over & done with in the shortest timeframe.
        
        There’s also the matter of optimum quality of feed & that dictates the month of lambing.
        
        Some factors are out of a cocky’s control ie a mild vs a harsh winter. In harsh winters the ewes are in poor condition when they lamb. If they can’t keep up to the demand on their milk the lamb is less viable when the weather turns to crap.

  I wish it were so simple GoVege. Trees shelter out to about 2.5 x their height but if the animals congregate under them & turn the ground into unhealthy mud the effects can be worse. In the summer those same trees provide shade but also harbour blowflies which leads to flystrike.
  
  I’d love to show a few bleeding heart “provide animals with shade” nuts the effects of flystrike. Even more I’d love to hand them a knife & get them to remove the maggots & cut away the rotting flesh.
  
  Anyway, unless you’re right in the middle of lambing losses aren’t usually too high. Young animals can handle wet & they can handle cold but wet & cold kills. If the mother gets time to clean up the lamb & get a feed into it things are generally okay.

    Actually quite a few, I was more the solitary one, child of working parents, school teachers ironically and I was tasked with getting myself to school, when it came to college I didn’t go often. I was in the second highest stream at school, those that took music were technically highest.
    So I took geography, history, german, etc as prescribed for students like me.
    
    I passed SC English accredited, (it was the first year that they did that) I was allowed to sit S.C . because my parents interceded for me, I was the first to walk out of four of my exams and I was the second to leave German, all at the first opportunity, I nearly passed all of them, I was accepted into 6th form but never went.
    
    I had my first child when I was 17 years and 9 months old, I was married to his father, we got engaged when I was 16, we got married when I was three months pregnant, we separated when my son was three months old.
    
    Does that qualify me to have an opinion?

        That was 1978, that son is 40 this year, how rude lol. I was lucky that I had a good basis prior to my waywardness, I attended many courses while he grew up and I was on the DPB, but there really wasn’t any requirement to finish any of them, the regime is supposedly different now.
        
        My advice to anyone is to stay in an exam for the whole time and fill in every space. I did real estate papers to Licensee level early 2000’s and I even opened my own real estate company, but in 2005 when I was trying to encourage my second son to pull his head in, I took a Writing for University purposes course after talking to someone at a College vocational day, I got accepted for Law for 2006 and I did that and a B.Soc. Sci conjoint, at Waikato.
        
        I passed Law in 2010 but could not justify the time to finish the B.Soc. Sci and did additional papers as no longer a conjoint and completed the B. Soc Sci from 2015-2016 majoring in Philosophy.
        
        My three children, two from a second marriage are all employed, one as a truck driver, one just doing his apprenticeship for a job that he has been doing the work for for a number of years, but his pay might as well be commensurate, so he is doing the paper work as he already does the practical and the third is a qualified chef.
        
        I have mainly been self employed, neither of my husbands have contributed financially to their children and I have raised them on my own, I was lucky to have some family money if you count having to have court cases as lucky.
        
        I feel qualified to have opinions on a large range of topics lol.

        I was difficult then and apparently I am still difficult now, I absolutely believe that someone needs to tell it like it is, PC has gone well and truly mad.
        Life is not fair, you have to make your own luck, but reading and writing as basics, every person should have.
        
        Good on the Principal and as a woman who is not the hated white, she can say things that would get others including me shot, someone needs to say it, and no it will not resonate with all the youth, but some, any, is a win.

If a ruthless political promoter with deep pockets wanted to wipe out the NZ Green Party, a Disney style feature film would be a devastating way.

I’m thinking of animation making heroes of NZ’s gutsy little tahr mountain goats. Eugenie Sage of the Greens has announced a mass slaughter of these little critters, which graze near the tops of the Southern Alps. The aim is to kill at least 17,500 of them. Don’t be fooled by the word “cull” – the Greens would prefer to have the whole tahr population slaughtered.

The Greens are like other fanatics. A little brainwashing and you could have them switch targets, but remain just as ruthless.

Doubtless much of the tahr slaughter will be done with military style rifles fitted with latest scope sights – firearms hated by the Left. They will be fired from helicopters – gun ships. I hope Richie McCaw, now a pilot, has the nous to stay away from this slaughter.

  Nor do you have to repay any student loans.
  Over a decade of an easy life, with many honours, government recognition, and further top jobs.
  
  Then after gaining the well paid positions plus recognition, just became a tad too greedy with an audit picking up a misappropriation of $100,000
  
  But then when we see how universities are run here, why not?
  Just what value is a degree?
  
  Just do not be slow cashing your assets and transferring to another country. 🙂
