If you argue this is morally and ethically wrong, then the same arguments can be used to completely destroy any pro-abortion argument. QED

    Locked away in the recess of my memory I remember a friendly GP who would help out females who were in the “ family way”. He had strict rules about the 2 month rule as if over he could not help you.
    
    The alternative was a single mother on the DPB or a hasty marriage that had a fair chance of not lasting.

    Everyone knows that had the Dems followed correct process then Ford allegation would not be “dividing” America.

        Big risk they took too. If Clinton won, the Dems would have the spots to fill.

      Fascinating Simon as we see all the Dems working from their own timeline being from the point of the controlled leak of Fords name to the MSM. Seeing the performance from Ford while noting such a long history of needing therapy we must wonder how she will keep it together? We must also wonder that after even the soft questioning by a woman prosecutor who exposed so many flaws in her oratory what the FBI might expose?

        The four people SHE named who were there said they never saw any such thing occur.
        One of those was her best friend.
        All have stated it under oath.
        Two new different men have come forward and given statements to Senate Judiciary investigators they were the ones who did it.
        So yes, something happened to her and yes, it wasn’t by Kavanaugh

        The honorable path would be to swear him in now. Had that despicable politician Feinstein come forward 8 weeks ago then the GOP would be right to disqualify him then, but to allow unverified sexual accusations to play out so publicly just for political gain is disgusting, it ensures that whoever the victim is, gets victimised further. Karma would have fienstein experience whichever crime has occurred; she is a horrible, evil women.

        I don;t think the accusation was credible. Ford could not remember who drove her for 20mins from her home to the swimming pool. Who drove her to the party. Who drove her home. Who if anyone accompanied her into the party. We know she didn’t complain to anyone. It doesn’t add up. It could be a nightmare she has somehow materialrised , or a performance played out over the script which she read. Either way over $half million raised on her Givealittle page so far. I wonder who will reap the benefit of that.

        She said when she went upstairs to go to the toilet, the two boys (they were teenagers then) pushed her into the bedroom and locked the door.
        
        When the second boy launched himself on top of her and the first boy, both boys tumbled off the bed, and Ford she fled from the room to the toilet, where she locked herself in.
        
        Was she locked in the bedroom or not?
        
        This seems relevant to whether rape was intended.

Kavanaugh was well down that list but his views on presidential power, much changed since he prosecuted Clinton, made him irresistible to a president who thinks he will need the Supreme Court to prevent him from being indicted.

        Um, it is standard at the DOJ not to indict a sitting President. Why? Basic chain of command, a Major doesn’t give orders to a General. Bob Woodward said two weeks ago that investigated Russian collusion for his book and found none. As for sacking Comey, Article 2 allows him to sack however he wants, besides Rosenstein advised him to do it.

    The principle of it. And the precedent.
    
    Otherwise, they’d be giving in to the bully and accuser’s veto. I.e. any candidate can be sunk or destroyed by an accusation from anyone.
    
    Ford’s accusation may or may not be true ( I don’t presume to know). But what matters is due process, the principle of innocence until proven guilty, and valuing and upholding truth.
    
    If they don’t fight this, no one is safe.

      Yes, precisely. I pointed out to a Dem relative in the US that I would hold the same contempt for the current process if it was a Dem being accused. He is a lawyer and still cannot see the issue of the presumption of innocence. His go-to was the picture in the yearbook..like it was proof beyond reasonable doubt. I asked him to take a step back and take a look at the damage this is doing to America and the world watches as they destroy themselves from within. It’s sad and disgusting those at the top encouraging and organising political divisions that almost mirror the race divisions of the 1900’s.

        The presumption of innocence applies to a criminal trial. The confirmation hearing is not a trial; it is effectively a job interview. I would like to think the standard for a SCOTUS job is higher than escaping a criminal conviction. In the real world, candidates get passed over for a job at the slightest whiff of controversy.

      Thats the thing about Ford’s accusation. It is not obviously false, but neither is it obviously true. That leaves the two Republican swing senators (both women) with a real dilemma. Who do they believe?
      
      Does it matter who they believe, maybe a seed of doubt is enough.
      
      That is, a credible but unprovable accusation is enough to prevent a person getting on the SC. It is a bit like being Caesar’s wife, the need to be beyond reproach.
      
      The difficulty Kavanaugh has now is that there will many reasonable people who will believe the accusation, unless it is actually disproven. Hard to do in the circumstances, though maybe the FBI inquiry might help.
      
      As with Clarence Thomas, this whole issue would make it hard for him to be a leader in the court. Ideally you want all Supreme Court Justices to be capable of providing both legal and moral leadership on some of the most challenging issues that come before the court, which means writing decisions that will be upheld in the courts and the law schools as leading authorities for decades (Brown and the Board of Education for instance). Could Kavanaugh, if he is seated, now actually do that?
      
      As Tas points out there are other options for the SC, and some will definitely be beyond reproach.

        Kavanaugh has a long long record of good judgements already. He is highly qualified.
        Fords accusation wouldnt even get to a Court.
        She can’t say when, she can’t say where. Her witnesses all disagree – under Oath.
        That aside, When you know that the Senate Judiciary investigators have spoken to two men who say they committed the groping then the answer is:
        Ford was assaulted
        Ford has mistakenly thought it was Kavanaugh
        Kavanaugh is innocent
        
        Edit, you also don’t get that no matter who the GOP put up, the Dems will behave the same way.
        Look at the way Feinstein sat on this for weeks and then threw Ford under the Bus by leaking her letter

        Right. Republicans (and All_on_Red here) seem to have taken the position that the accusation needs to be fully proven to the standard of a criminal conviction. However, any reasonable person (taking away this particular partisan situation) would agree that the standard for a supreme court appointment should be higher than not being sent to prison. Nonetheless “confirmed until proven guilty” is an easy position for republicans to defend, so they are doing so.

        I obviously understand that the Dems will play hardball, just as the Republicans did in 2016 with Garland.
        
        But there will be candidates in the Federalist List who will not be vulnerable in this way, ie they will self evidently be beyond reproach.
        
        So unless Kavanaugh is actually cleared by the FBI, that might be how it will go.
        
        Could be a new nomination as early as Monday 8 October.

You’re now saying he has to PROVE his own innocence. Which is just stupid considering she doesn’t know where or when and all the people she claims were there say she is wrong.

        There’s also no comparison between how Garland was treated and what’s happened to Kavanaugh
        Garland didn’t even get to hearings whilst Kavanaugh is being smeared as a serial rapist.

        Her accusation doesn’t even meet the standard of getting to Court.
        Also what she has accused them of (according to local Police) is (at that time) a misdemeanour. So not a prison offence.

        Yes, the elections are on 6 November but no-one new gets seated till January. So if there is a new nomination on 8 October, the Republicans will start hearings before the election and use the period between Nov and Jan to finish them. This has been done before. Provided there is no controversy (other than the appointees ideology) then it will be all done and dusted before the new Senate is seated.
        
        Both the Republicans and Democrats know that, which is why it is obvious the Republicans have a back up plan.
        
        In any event, it does not matter what you and I think, the ball is entirely in the court of Senators Collins, Flake and Murkowski. They alone have the power. From what I can discern this is where it is heading. A new nomination that they will support.

    It is nice to imagine that this is all about being fair and defending Kavanaugh’s honour, but the reality is that this is bigger than one man and politics is a cold, hard game. I don’t for a moment doubt that Republicans would throw Kavanaugh under the bus if they thought that was politically advantageous. The transparent cynicism of the Garland nomination shows that. Was it fair to Garland to deny him a hearing?

        Kavanaugh’s a Catholic. He described himself at the hearing as going to a Catholic boy’s school.
        
        Pretty much like the upbringing he’d have got if he’d been born in NZ and was educated at St Bede’s.

  Kavanaugh is likely not going to happen. At the eleventh hour, there was major drama after the Republicans had confirmed a majority.
  
  The Dems flipped Jeff Flake of Arizona. There was a 30 minute delay where he was alone with the full Democrat committee membership in the committee. Then mass confusion when he was granted the floor, requested a delay to the committee vote, and Chairman Grassley called a vote anyway. There was a confused vote, then Flake voted ‘yes’ after a long pause – but then added a caveat: he would vote ‘yes’ to move Kavanaugh’s nomination to the full Senate, but would only vote ‘yes’ in the Senate subject to a seventh FBI investigation.
  
  No-one was sure what Flake’s caveat actually was for the 11-10 ‘yes’ vote to move out of committee to the Senate for about 10 minutes – either Republicans or Democrats.
  
  Flake was the deciding vote 11-10 on the Senate Judiciary Committee.
  
  That vote takes the Supreme Court nomination vote to the full Senate of 100.
  
  The Republicans have to get 50 votes (with Pence then being the deciding vote as Vice President).
  
  Senator Linda Murkowski (another Republican) from Alaska also said she wouldn’t confirm Kavanaugh unless there was an FBI investigation. That meant the GOP only had 49-49, and McConnell couldn’t call a vote, assuming a DNC party vote.
  
  So there is going to be a seventh FBI investigation ‘of up to 1 week’.
  
  Flake looked petrified, as did Murkowski, after being accosted by Senator Feinstein.
  
  So the FBI will investigate Kavanaugh for a 7th time, after 6 times giving him clearance.
  
  Further delays are likely, based on fresh allegations. These will be based likely on further rape accusations. They will also likely centre on behaviour: anger. Evidence of being drunk at college. If a witness can be procured to attest Kavanaugh was ever inebriated to stupor an inference can be made he committed rapes without memory. All of the cross examination of Kavanaugh’s character will now take place by media. It is unlikely he will have any opportunity to respond to allegations.
  
  For the DNC the hope will be further delays and charges right up to the mid-terms.
  
  The Supreme Court session starts on 1 October 18. It will be deadlocked prior to Kavanaughs’ confirmation, rejection, or withdrawal.
  
  Trump has to be the one to call for the FBI investigation. The question will be on what terms. The FBI will have now have leverage to add to their extreme acrimony towards Trump. Trump also has leverage on the FBI. There is no telling what they will respectively do.
  
  The saga will drag on. The vote was meant to occur tomorrow. Flakes’ 11th hour flip was a watershed.
  
  The vote was crucial. The Kavanaugh nomination is now more likely then not going to fail.
  
  The ‘blue wave’ forecast is viable. The DNC may very well win the Congress. The Kavanaugh pick will likely fail if it is reliant upon an FBI hostile to the President providing a swift seventh investigation. The DNC will be able to ensure there is insufficient time pre mid-terms for a new pick.
  
  The Democrats have demonstrated again they can compromise establishment Republicans at will.
  
  Jeff Flake is retiring, and not up for re-election. The terrified expression on his face during the hearing must have been caused by something potent.
  
  So the the blue-wave is very much back on. What happens now is highly unpredictable.
  
  There is proof the rape accuser committed perjury in lying about being a psychologist. There is a risk the Dems over-reach. On the other hand Kavanaugh is now a sitting duck outside the judiciary committee and the DNC only have to keep 2 of 3 Republicans flipped – and Murkowski and Flake look like they are all-in for the DNC.
  
  So who knows.

    Well it seems we now have a week delay, which allows the fence-sitters to make up their minds (and look at polling data). I don’t think the FBI investigation will uncover much. It’s just about delay.
    
    I watched the Flake flake. It was quite extraordinary how the chairman rapidly pushed for a vote (despite members still asking “what are we voting for?”) and adjourned the committee.

        All_on_Red: Did you actually watch the video? There was clearly confusion about what motion was being voted on, but the chair wanted to quickly wrap up and have discussions in private.       What does seem strange is what people are saying on twitter about Christine Ford’s father.
      
      Christine Blasey Ford’s father, Ralph G Blasey Jr, was the Vice President of National Savings and Trust in Washington DC – a well known CIA bank, from 1962-1974.
      
      He now is the VP of Business Development of Red Coats Inc. A subsidiary called Admiral Security Services provides private armed security and cyber security for Washington bureaucrats who work in the security services.       But if the FBI say they want to investigate further lines of enquiry beyond their terms of reference and timeline, anyone disagreeing can be accused of obstruction.
      
      It’s extraordinary that a long-standing Republican like Flake would vote against what every legal person including Liberals in the United States actually regarded as the ‘safe’ standard conservative pick.

        The point is that Peter Strozk was demoted into FBI Human Resources after multiple transgressions of Federal Law and instances of bias, prejudice, and improper performance of his duties.
        
        It is simply extraordinary that all of these different relationships intersect.
        
        I do not understand how the FBI can conduct a legitimate investigation of Kavanaugh given it’s conflict of interest with respect to Christine Ford. Peter Strozk was demoted with Bill Priestap at the FBI. But he still works at the FBI in the capacity of ‘HR’.
        
        Whatever is going on in the United States in this nomination is utterly bizarre, and dangerous.

  Anybody see yesterday’s hearing from Ford? Oh she was so “credible,” I’ve been on two juries and one was child abuse, the other domestic abuse. Ford’s claims, were so weak that it would be thrown out. There is no statute of limitations on these alleged crimes and check could go to Maryland police at any time, but hasn’t. She reminds me of Anna Anderson, something’s not right about her but I think that will be revealed far later after this is all finished.

      I am aware of that GV. The thing is we all know that America is full of crazies, we know that the celebrity culture and “the 15 minutes of fame” allure has taken over America. We also know that America is very black and white (literally) where people hate the other ideology, with some willing to do anything to halt the other ideology. A very famous American recently pointed out to me (on a hobbyist website) that US law makes it difficult to sue for defamation. Add in the fact that Ford is a Democrat and likely being paid with a book deal and paid interviews ahead of her. The fact she produced no corroborating evidence and that she was a heavy drinker from the age of 15, says all you need to know. The thing is she could report this crime and so far she hasn’t.

        Expecting a teenager to report this sort of crime is asking a bit much, especially when for years the court experience was known to be extremely traumatic for victims.
        I know someone who was raped at 16, their first sexual experience …by a schoolteacher.
        The experience was so revolting as to cause them to just try not to even think about it.

    I agree with you and many others who bemoan the trashy decline in standards that the media have become. I also agree that a lot of the time the newspapers have failed to hold this catastrophic government to account (although there are some signs of critique appearing now so there’s some hope).
    
    The big problem that I see, though, is that we are still dependent on the media for our news. Kiwiblog is a really active forum where the news is discussed, and I’m sure there are others out there which are equally active (although not obviously as good hahahaha). But we still discuss the news which comes from the MSM, don’t we?
    
    I think all the MSM outlets were stupid in putting up their content for free in the first place. Especially newspapers where paid circulation has declined and online advertising income must be declining because it simply isn’t effective in most cases amongst the clutter.
    
    So what’s going to happen when the MSM puts up paywalls and some of them go out of business? Remember that a huge % of discussion on this, New Zealand’s best blog, comprises comments on things that are published in the MSM. It’s a conundrum.

  My thoughts are that despite the rational amateur mum&dad landlords are kind hearted folk who simply want an independent retirement fund, they are not fit to be housing providers moving forward and these guys agree. They say:
  
  We are trying to turn the rental model on its head a little. Traditionally it’s been mum and dad owning one or two in the suburbs and for a lot of reasons at this stage they aren’t wanting to reinvest in those properties to improve them.
  
  The government’s proposed reforms will go a long way to ejecting amateur landlords who are reluctant to provide decent housing which is a good thing imo, even if MBIE thinks otherwise.
  
  What of the poor quality housing stock? That is bought by 1st time buyers with the means to improve it.
  
  What of the “forgotten middle”? Professional outfits like those in the article have a solution.
  
  What of low income tenants? A stronger social housing portfolio plus minimum housing standards plus further security of tenancy will stabilise forced moment and build communities once more.

Ministers may agree or not but they are generally appreciative of the advice. But to repeat the obvious. How extraordinary to think an organisation as lavishly financed as the U.N. could f*** that up.

But anyway, interestingly, the TV1 newsroom – in fact the entire media as far as I know – did not draw attention to this appalling faux pas. At all.

Perhaps because it could infer that outside this Antipodean bubble she is absoludely a nobody. And that would be embarrassing.

If it were a National Party PM at the receiving end, say, Simon BRIDGE, do you think the media would have drawn attention to it?

      Capitalisation suggests that the word is not used in a general sense. If you had simly referred to “accounts of white crime” then I would not have asked the question. Instead you refer to “Annals”.
      
      I guess your answer does give an indication of what we are in for — a completely meaningless exposee of every criminal who happens to be white. Maybe you could break it down to country of origin, religion, marital status, occupation, gingas, fruitloops, converts, perverts, male, female, trans-one-way, trans-the-other-way, vegans, carnivores, omnivores and political allegiances. You know, something actually meaningfull. Maybe throw in a left field classication. How many are dispirited sports fans? Are left-handers more prevalent than right handers?

Nothing I could find on this week’s UN wankfest in international productions even mentioned it, saving their remarks for such luminaries as the boss of the Marshall Islands.

  I’ve noted the same thing all week. The international coverage was zilch. Last night I found her at the 25th story down on CNN, but it wasn’t about her epoch-defining speech. It was about her trading jokes with Stephen Colbert.
  
  The point is that this whole fluff-fest is not about international exposure. It’s about deflecting domestic attention from the never-ending fuck-ups at home.

        Important to pause and consider NZ’s pairing with such monstrous World Powers as the Marshall Is [pop 56,000] Wikipedia indicates that this “republic” is made up of “29 coral atolls, comprising 1156 individual islands and islets.”
        Also, when there are over 91 CITIES in the World with populations greater than NZ’s, and that in the list of Countries Populations we rate 125th.

Watched the Commie Chic Comrade Ardern at the UN . For some reason she was masquerading as “Mrs Ardern”. She even got involved with mentioning the #Meetoo movement. Got the impression she was more supportive of the massive amounts of Misandrists that have sprung up around the world.
She just has to look at her support partners the far left Lunatic Green party which is infested with almost a full board of Misandrists.

  There are some great photos up on line. An almost empty room and those that were there were preoccupied doing other things. One woman is standing with her back to Ardern during her speech and there was also a stream of people leaving. How the lying media could possibly say there was a standing ovation and wide applause is beyond me. Bloody liars. It was an abysmal display from Ardern. She sounded as if she was in the Miss Universe comp, you know the usual insincere babble about caring for children and world peace. I’m utterly ashamed of her but then again, The UN, pffft!

    No probably at all.
    If you look back, we had 6 Weeks without major stuff ups while she was on maternity leave, then chaos since, right up till the day she left for the UK, and nothing major since. It will start up again when she gets back.
    I overheard a conversation where someone was describing her as good but surrounded by and dragged down by the useless people around her.
    I disagree. I think she is a large part of the problem, a lightning rod for stuff ups and issues.
    It is like the lying issue. I think she overestimates her ability to deceive without getting caught by using clever and obscure language. I don’t think she is clever enough for that approach, and it has shown.

The tram is a stupid idea. It had a BCR of 0.05. It will be a money pit. As for the roads, they will just get bogged down in consenting wars for years. Every day the idiocy that is The Terrace tunnel is on show. And yet there it is still.

When Transmission Gully has its opening ceremony I hope that common sense prevails and Steven Joyce is given the privilege of cutting the ribbon. It never would have been possible without him.

Pike River probe’s independence under scrutiny.
It comes after video footage was released this week by the families of the 29 men killed, which they said showed the [second] explosion was caused by a conveyer belt being switched on.
Police said while the idea was considered, they could find no evidence this was authorised.
However, they had now launched an investigation to ensure their actions did not cause the second explosion, which scuppered all hope of finding any of the men alive.
Families spokesperson, Bernie Monk, said police could not investigate themselves and an independent agency should instead be put in charge.

As with other Government functions, various people seem to keep leaking material, supposedly to serve some purpose.

Is this latest leak (video footage claimed to show the conveyor belt started) to question Police propriety in investigating their own actions and will that now escalate to question who should conduct the forensics examination of everything that’s in the drift?

Latest on the Kavanaugh hearing. It looks like Republican senator Jeff Flake, flaked out. He is agreeing to moving the vote forward only if there is another FBI investigation. So it looks like we could have another painful, drawn-out week where anything could happen. More threats against Kavanaugh’s family, more chance for spurious claims and accusers to come forward.

Honestly, I don’t see what more is to be gained. The Democrats are not going to change their ‘no’ votes anyway, regardless of the results of any further investigation. Kavanaugh has already been the subject of six FBI vettings during his long career. He was an assistant to Bush and had access to the nuclear codes.

The whole thing is depressing. If the Dems want a delay and another FBI investigation (and you know how well the FBI can be trusted these days) then I’d be against it.

    Smart move by Trump; a further background check when new evidence emerges is not unprecedented. FBI will probably only need to verify the statements made by the four persons named by the accuser as being at the scene of the crime. In normal circumstances they would interview the accuser and assess the veracity of her testimony (which has a number of inconsistencies) but this would open a can of worms (in this day and age the female accuser is a protected species).

    It is politically charged, basically, because of abortion. Both abortion and gay marriage were made ‘law’ by judicial activism; by liberal Supreme court judges “finding” a right to each by “interpreting” the Constitution. They weren’t made the way laws are supposed to be made (and there is no way either of those would have been made law in the proper way at the time).
    
    If the whole of a law is based upon the opinion of one or two men and relies on those men remaining in office as long as they can then the law is spurious to begin with. When a judge retires (as has happened) then the law adopted this way can just as easily be jettisoned. That is what drives the fear of the Democrats and the whole abortion industry – that Kavanaugh, Gorsuch and others could make abortion and gay marriage unlawful. That, and having conservative judges for a lifetime on the Supreme Court who go against their liberal ideas.

He’s been interviewed 2x, and the prosecutor asked leading questions around whether a potential alternative person is involved. Is there information not in the public domain? Probably. Why would Winston Peters withdraw a Bill that he preached would save the Racing Industry and now finds that would help NZ TABS with millions from penalizing Australian bookmakers that take bets on NZ Racing. In withdrawing the Bill he said would be the saviour of the racing industry a couple of months ago his explanation was the Bill is not fit for service.   Apart from Massey effective never being ranked as a university again how does this work in relation to all the different subjects and research a university does? So history needs to be rewritten, some medical research will be scrapped etc

    Jahnke, who earlier seems to have been called Tomlins-Jahnke, is professor of Maori and indigenous education at Massey.
    
    She is a product of Massey, having graduated with degrees in education – bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph. D.
    
    Jahnke’s husband, Bob Jahnke, is a sculptor and is professor of Maori visual arts at Massey.
    
    As I see it, the problem is the Government has set up wananga to provide Maori-style research and tertiary education, but Maori are also taking over NZ’s existing universities, which are based in Western academia.
    
    The State agency which funds our universities seems to have told them to increase Maorification or suffer in funding.
    
    It’s similar to what has happened with State radio. Taxpayers subsidise Maori tribal stations, but the board of Radio NZ, and Wily Willie Jackson representing the tribal stations, sign a deal (while National was Government) that has Maorified Radio NZ.
    
    In tertiary education, if Maori want not only their own subjects, including kapa haka and oral history, but also some sort of mystical indigenous focus, I think it should be in their own wananga, the tertiary colleges set up for them.
    
    It seems Maori want both their own separate State-funded systems, but also to control the parallel non-Maori systems.
    
    On the face of it, they would have New Zealand abandon Western-style learning, research, science.

FWIW:

I recently received a very nice email from my local Countdown, advising me that I had been ‘ Chosen’ to be deprived of single-use plastic shopping bags effective from 8 October.

As any plastic bag I receive from Countdown is used more than once and are very versatile, I sent a reply to the Manager requesting that she supply me with an exemption document to that effect, and stating that I was quite prepared to provide verifiable evidence in support of my contention that I DID NOT use any of their plastic bags only once.

Although I sent off my reply a week ago, for some unknown reason I haven’t yet received a response…

As I said, FWIW. I thought you should know…

Some of the braver souls may wish to avoid supermarket pressure and leave their goods at the checkout. This is quite legal so long as you don’t take any unpaid for goods out of the store. ‘Wrong place, wrong time’: Kiwi lawyer killed by sign

A 200kg sign which fell two metres from a betting shop and crushed and killed a young New Zealand lawyer was found to have been “dangerously insecure for a long period of time”. Jacob Marx, 27, had been living and working in London for four months before he was hit by the sign, which was covering a William Hill bookmakers on Camden Road, north London, in 2013.

If you’re into dark humour, there’s something mildly amusing about a bookmaker using an unsafe sign to run a “one-in-a-million” sweepstake. And there’s probably a dark lawyer joke about “hard cases make bad law” in there, too.

William Hill Organisation have denied breaching health and safety duties in the case, which was brought by the borough of Camden.

I wonder what their defence will be. The sign was generally safe but was meant to fall on someone else, like Teresa May or the Queen?

  No one, man or woman, should have to face such conditions when they’re seriously ill Maggy. Like in most top heavy institutions there’s always money for H&S, cultural courses & managers’ bonuses but the cupboard’s bare when it comes to engaging cleaners.
  
  But another point. Do you think that some of the problems in hospitals comes from the elevation of nurses to degreed professionals putting mundane tasks far beneath them? Bedpans & patient hygiene are no longer important as nurses try to match & even usurp the responsibilities of doctors.
  
  If women were barred from becoming doctors or specialists I would have some sympathy but that is not the case.

    I nurse-aided one Varsity hols in a Male ward at Wanganui Hospital.
    Although I had to deal with bed pans, pee-wee bottles, incontinent sheets, dirty bums, they were nowhere as bad as dealing with sputum cups (ooooooooooooooooH!!!!!!).
    
    Nurses, Nurse-aides, etc…never had to clean the dunnies… We would clean up if there had been a spill in the ward… (food, blood, pus, guts, piddle, poos, etc).
    
    I don’t recall the ward or ancillary rooms ever being dusty…. First thing the Ward Sister would have noticed.

  There were about 50,000 people singing and chanting (not a bloody Haka in sight) and it was freaking awesome!
  There was a better atmosphere there that day than at any Test Match I have attended in New Zealand (Six Nations Tests in the UK are another story..)
  It still astounds me that Steve Tew and NZ Rugby were so happy to throw the NPC and the Ranfurly Shield in the garbage-History clearly means nothing to such characters.

    You should perhaps be a little bit careful. I have read that some travel insurers will decline claims from customers who already have ‘free’ credit card insurance, throwing you back on inferior benefits.
    Insurance companies typically only rank slightly above car dealers, and lawyers (last, obviously) in polls about trusted advisors.

    My point exactly Nostra. Travellers buy insurance thinking that is what they are covered for. I accept that the onus is on the insured to provide honest information for the company to make a decision on but I also think, in my innocence, that in return they should receive full cover.
    
    The “free” credit card insurance is just a gimmick but cover sold by travel agents should be the real McCoy.
    
    A further bitch I have with the thieves is the umpteen pages of legal gobbledegook that contain the relevant conditions of payout. I doubt that you, as a qualified lawyer, could decipher them easily.
    
    It’s fraud to make a false claim. It also should be fraud to sell a policy not fit for purpose.

    It was about twenty pages long…..every sentence being convoluted legalese. I was at the lawyers about an unrelated matter & asked him his opinion. His response was to the effect that that’s how they do it. Exclude everything & pay out what they feel like.

I just read this article in Stuff about how Maori staff are backing the VC. It says
“will be the first in New Zealand and developed nations to include an indigenous world view and the Treaty of Waitangi into its core business.”
If their world view is to de-platform, and to otherwise deny people with views that don’t match their own, they have a crappy world view, and could do with some enlightening.
