I have a close family member (Max, not his real name) who has suffered from a mental illness for years. Max is incredibly brave, never complaining and has worked hard to self-manage with support from our wider family. There’s nothing in the world that would have me trade places with him. Life is very tough.

He lives on a fixed benefit income, and rent-free in a family home.

Max is unable to hold down a regular job, but has learned that having a purpose and getting out of the house is an important part of keeping him well. So he volunteers 2-3 days each week at a charity organisation about 40kms from his home. He uses his car to lug some equipment to/from his work each day, and in any case there’s no public transport available to him.

Last night Max told us that the increase in fuel costs mean he is having to reduce his volunteer work by one day a week. He simply can’t make his budget stretch any further.

The impact of fuel prices is inconsequential for me, but for Max it’s forcing difficult, no-win choices.

The thing I realised from Max’s situation is that far from increased fuel costs leading to higher priced bread, in this instance the net impact is poorer mental health for Max, and one less volunteer day for the charity he’s been supporting.

Blame? Yes, on Labour’s poor economic leadership, and on a lust for tax to fuel their socialist ambitions.

    If the COL legislate a change to the MMP 5% threshold and change it to 3%, we are doomed, if they dont, we still stand a chance of booting this bunch of pricks out of office in 2020. There will be massive collusion and support for the COL by MSM which maybe difficult to get any cut through.

      I fully expect as to why the Secret Agreement being Peters’s work that included the MMP level reduction.
      A main reason why it is “still” a secret.
      I heard this at the time of the original agreement from a pretty good source in Wellington at the time.
      Winston’s agreement is to 3% but now the Greens now want 2%.
      Ardern does not care and will support it as no COLL member can disagree – they changed the law for this reason.

  An 80km round trip – yes, that is a long way to travel to volunteer when you’re on a benefit. Before or after this current Govt.
  
  Just to run road legal vehicle on a benefit takes some doing.
  Did this person get the winter energy payment ?
  
  Wouldn’t the increase fuel price for 240kms come out at a few dollars ? Wouldn’t that equate to dropping one day out of every 2-4 weeks, not every week?
  
  There’d be a lot of jealous beneficiaries in terms of weekly income when you’ve got someone receiving a benefit with free accomodation (yes – others receive supplements to afford to live) – on the face of it without knowing outgoings like rates etc Starts to add up to most of a full time working wage. Tell me where I’m wrong.
  
  While it’s a good deed to volunteer – is it prudent to stretch your budget to the limit in the first place in order to meet the cost of travelling 240kms per week to volunteer ? Is there nowhere closer to home ?

    Max has been doing this for the last 5 or so years. The organisation is one which benefits from his experience when previously in the workforce, and there’s nothing closer to home for him.
    
    A number of family members relinquished their share of an estate home, gifting it to Max. So while he’s rent free, he has the usual home owners costs – rates, insurance, maintenance. Not many beneficiaries would be jealous of those costs.
    
    It is indeed good to volunteer, however I think Max’s primary motivation is the personal benefit to his health. He’s definitely less likely to have episodes while he’s working, and our family is looking for ways to support this, now that Ardern’s socialists are getting stuck into fuel.

      Fuel has risen 19c per litre in 2018. Worst case three days per week 240kms uses how many litres ? At 10kms per litre it’s 24 litres times 19c increase. $4.56c. Am I wrong ? So everything was stretched to the last cent before that – I mean come on mate give me a break. I’d love to see the truth and facts and detail behind your post – and fark I don’t care about admitting if I’m way off – *prove it*.
      
      Effective income of how much ? Benefit plus free house, hello ?

  ….In my line of work I meet people from all walks of life….Liarbor and Nats….business owners and the working poor…..I know of many people struggling and the gas situation is making things intolerable….my best example is a woman on minimum dollar….working up to sixty hours a week to make rent etc…..they live out of the city (Chch)…for cheaper rent…..the huge worry now… is how one gets to and from work as the budget does not stretch that far….catch a bus I hear people say….now that would be fine to get to work ….but how to get home…..buses do not run for people doing a late shift…..this government does not give a shit…..my hope…..that my disgruntled liarbor voting clients are leaving the left in droves….

      Well the New yorker which i received today has a wonderful story about J multitasking in New York which has all sorts of stuff we don’t need to know about like buying wireless breast pumps purchased in the USA and ” I can pump and walk” she said gamely.         You’re right, G152. Two official languages – two versions of names.
        
        But Maori want to take over the English versions of the names. They want to “pidginize” the version of English spoken in NZ to parallel Maori language. State-owned electronic media and the country’s two print media companies are complying by using NZ Pidgin in place names rather than conventional English.
        
        Something similar is happening in tertiary education. Special Maori tertiary institutions, wananga, have been set up, where “Maori knowledge” can be used. But Maori are also taking over our traditional Western universities, with special Maori advisers, boards, and subjects such as kapa haka and oral history. Canterbury even has a tribal (Ngai Tahu) research centre to focus on the tribe’s issues. At least some of our universities are also being committed, without full public consultation, to support of international indigenous issues.

So Jacinda is now going after food prices. Norm Kirk had a go at that in 1972-1975. Every item had to have a ‘shield’ symbol showing the ‘maximum retail price’ set by the Government. The shields were printed on labels but remained blank – seemed officials could not get their heads round what the MRP’s should be.
So one part of a supermarket will be subject to externally imposed maximum prices, and another part externally imposed minimum prices.

If gas is found then Fonterra’s Clandeboye plant could be converted to gas, a big win-win all round. But hey!   The real threat is that the cryptocommunists who have siezed control of our country will simply ban certain methods of electricity production altogether without warning, or put severe restrictions on them on a whim without any consultation.
  
  I’m not joking. This pack of arseholes won’t allow the importation of gas if it doesn’t fit their agenda. We’ll just have to start rationing or freeze to death.

    This is what Tom McGuigan as Minister of Electricity did in the Kirk Labour Government. Norm Kirk had told his Ministers that they were not to allow Departments to boss them around. When some Greenie or other complained about the operation of some hydro station, Tom would impose a restriction on its operation. The Assistant General Manager (who could be a real B) would then phone the Superintendent in question (bypassing the food chain) and impose the restriction. After several months the oil bill for Marsden went through the roof (when prices were already high) and Tom was sidelined.
    This was relatively minor – but Jacinda in due course will cop the similar sort of thing big time.

    Yes, but Red Radio’s point was that there should be a cap on loan size altogether and that 100% was still much too high. Faafoi sounded pretty sane: ‘100% is a lot better than the 800% some people’s debt currently grows to.’ ‘Capping loans is a step too far’.
    
    ‘Loan sharks’ sure sound nasty, but I expect they deal with many untraceable defaulters and that’s why they need high interest?
    
    I’d like Guyon to start a low-interest loan service using his and his buddies’ money, always happy to write off debt if people just can’t or won’t pay, and never letting debt grow above 20%.

So why did Trevor Mallard, having cancelled his investigation into Simon Bridges’ expenses leak, then decide to launch his own SECRET inquiry?

This smacks of Mallard playing partisan political games, something which he, as Speaker, is supposed to be above. I somehow doubt the already-fragile relationship between National MP’s and Mallard will be improved by this revelation. And once again, it seems that Mallard himself has run off to the media with the story, just as he did with his “stupid little girl” allegation, when he was the only person in Parliament who heard said remark.

It certainly sets the scene for a boisterous time when Parliament resumes next week.

  So Police took, at the very most, three days to work out who the leaker (and mentally-ill person) is and contacted the person, ensuring their well-being – apparently without the authorised forensic investigation of emails and relevant databases that Mallard’s inquiry involved. Is this the best way to spend money and avoid high interest charges?

  I use AirNZ’s OneCard and Qantas pre-paid cash cards when holidaying. It does pay to check ATM fees when using them. Some charge a percentage commission, and others charge a flat fee – which can work out to a large percentage commission if you’re withdrawing smaller amounts.

    Did that but sill came unstuck. Did not realise the AirNZ card was phased out and unusable and lost my credit card (it was found by a honest person). Being in USA without a credit card was rather like being like Sampson with a crew-cut – the shuttle company at Kahului, Hawaii would not take cash! and Hawaiian Airlines were very suspicious of my $US50 note when paying for bags (you normally stick a credit card into their check-in machines). Fortunately in-laws covered most costs and I reimbursed them when I got back.
    So I now also use a travel card where they give you a spare card with a different number.

  Presuming you have the money (as you state that you would preload the card) why would you then incur interest charges? Surely you would pay off the bill in one go anyway?
  If you want to have a bit of safety why not get a debit card preloaded with the currencies you intend to use? With the dollar sliding this might work out better for you plus give you a back up if anything happened to your credit card.

    Last time I looked most credit cards charge interest on cash withdrawals from the date you took the money, unlike on purchases where, as you say, the interest only kicks in if you don’t pay the bill off in full. I think your suggestion of a pre-pay international card is a good one.

  I did some calculations while ago and came to the conclusion that the amount of money I would save was not worth my time trying to work out what was going to be the best options. I’m not an exchange trader so anything I did to offset this was best guess, and I’ve right as many times as I have been wrong on this.
  This may be different for you and you might like the exercise of working it out. But I figured if I was saving $100 while spending $5k on the holiday, I was best to just enjoy myself.

  I normally keep my credit car in credit (just a few bucks) just because I don’t like the idea of getting a millstone around my neck.
  
  You won’t get pinged huge interest by going into debt so long as you pay it back within the first month.
  
  I would be reluctant to put a whole lot of credit in the card because if you somehow get scammed, you might lose that money whereas the debit is normally covered by the bank etc.
  
  Remember you can always log in on web banking and top up your credit card if need be.

  I got a card from the ANZ which could be preloaded with a variety of mainstream foreign currencies eg US, UK & some others. Then once overseas it could be used to withdraw cash from ATM machines. The exchange rate didn’t vary once you put the money on the card. More could be added using internet banking.

    I agree. And never have the credit card amount converted into NZ dollars when you are paying.
    Take a wad of US dollars and euros, keep in different places so you don’t lose the lot if you are robbed and don’t worry about exchange rates unless you are shifting millions.
    Relax and enjoy the holiday and try to have enough in reserve to payoff the credit card as soon as you get home.

  Get a travel card with a small credit limit. Top up with internet banking. Get a debit card with the a small amount of local currency ($US Yen Pound etc). Top up with internet banking.
  Use travel card to pay for things, used debit card to withdraw local currency.
  This way if you are scammed or lose your cards you wont get fleeced,

  Never get debit cards. You lose all protections against scams.
  
  Just use normal credit.
  
  Say you take a grand out at an atm just use Internet banking that day to pay it off. The interest will be fuck all anyway.
  
  Just let the bank know what countries you’ll be in on what day. Makes life easier as you won’t trigger any fraud warnings. I’ve had my card not work in Hawaii before cause the bank didn’t know I was there.

  I have two cards. Cash Passport which is a pain in the arse because reloading take 1 or 2 business days. The other is Loaded for Travel, which works perfectly. Load up to 11 currencies and it is immediate, and at the exchange rate right at that time. These cards are treated as a credit card – sometimes sign, sometime PIN. I prefer to sign, there are too many cameras and shysters ready to harvest your card number and PIN. Been to Alaska twice – stopping at Hawaii there and back. I have never been let down. Cash withdrawals no problem (for tip money) Reload NZ$ into US$ way up in Fairbanks, no problem

    The judgement relies on lies about petrol use. Everyone understands the maths of petrol use. If Mark Cooper had the guts to say he carried jerry cans as Andrew Tipping did verbally in the 2002 appeal I would give him a leave pass on that, but he took the word of DC Johansen instead.
    
    There was a gore covered jewelry box that disappeared. Morgan said in appeal court that a bangle emerged from this onto the floor of Mark’s car without forensic attachment to the crime scene. The list of lies is endless.

        They were repeated in the second trial by misusing notebooks describing the research.
        
        The maths show that Lundy used 58 liters of petrol since he last filled.
        This would require him to do 520 kilometers on that amount, including a racetrack style drive averaging 104 km/hour for the last 150 kilometers.
        It is completely impossible, on a racetrack fuel consumption is, across all petrol powered vehicles, 3 times that which the most careful driving consumes.
        He was 30 liters short for this, but judges are lawyers, not mathematicians or scientists.
        Ironically Ellis j from trial one had a BA majoring in maths, but could not intervene with the fools in the jury.

        About three months ago I had to go to Napier to see a sick friend
        I left at 1am. With little traffic it was real easy cruising at that speed and higher.

These figures were unchallenged in the defence closing. Unlike a race track, these conditions were no doubt similar to those faced by Mr Lundy.         [287] For these reasons, we are of the view that the application to adduce the further evidence of Mr Robertson should be declined and we will order accordingly. Otherwise, our conclusion is that there was evidence before the jury on which it was entitled to conclude that Mr Lundy could have made the late night trip between Petone and Palmerston North for the purposes of the murders and return as contended by the Crown. They could also have concluded he would have had sufficient fuel for thetravel that he made the following day, including the fast trip back to Palmerston North from Johnsonville, although as the Crown conceded all along, it would have been tight. That is consistent with the fact that as Mr Lundy said to the police, by the time he had reached Palmerston North the petrol warning device on his car was sounding….”

        Notsofast, surely 104 km/h is not particularly fast, and the fuel usage at a little over 11 litres per 100 km is not that remarkable for even a Falcon at cruising speed.
        
        Why do you say he had to race to average 104 km/h ? Late at night on uncrowded roads outside an urban area, that would seem reasonably easy.

        There is a harmonic mean that precludes using 104 as a steady speed. In 2000 there were 5 sets of traffic lights on the route used to average 104, this meant doing speeds of 180 km/hr whenever possible. Mark would say after this was the first time he discovered the leased vehicle had a speed governer. It was shaking to bits. He used the auto transmission as a manual, not relying on torque to change gears.
        The super 8 vehicles are exactly the same. When driven carefully from a to b on civvy street they consume exactly one third the juice they do on the race track.
        Part of Lundy’s plan would require him to have purchased jerry cans of petrol prior on a camera laden forecourt undiscovered by plods. Then to disappear them without trace.
        It would also require him to have concocted the exact calculation later proven by Jonathan Eaton’s research.

        I see from Stephieboy’s quotes that the Police managed to achieve between 13 and 16 litres per 100 km, but that is rather short of the required 11.1 for Lundy to go the distance he did, is it not ?
        
        58 litres at 13 litres per 100 km is only a little over 440 km travelled; and 16 is even worse, 362 km. I don’t think that a standard Falcon is capable of doing much under 10 even when driven very carefully.
        
        I agree that the racetrack comparisons are useless, but the police open road tests are equally unhelpful if Notsofast’s claim about the distance and fuel usage are correct – even 13L/100 km is not good enough.

        And do rentals have speed governors ? Using the auto as a manual, I guess you can but almost no one ever does unless the car is DSG equipped with steering wheel paddles.

        There was a commission to persuade Lundy to pay money for rootstock, 500k. This was money that a witness with permanant name suppression owed down the chain.
        No one knew Lundy had driven to Petone that day, not even that middleman who was also a good friend. When the person arrived with the persuader machete, it appeared to be a home invasion to Christine Lundy, so she screamed, woke the child. They fought from in front and behind, both getting cloth fibers and unidentified male dna beneath their fingernails. They had to be silenced quickly before the neighbours called the police.

I never owned one and I don’t think I ever drove one from that era, and the online references are to the long wheelbase versions (Fairmont/Fairlane) and the Ute where the limit was ECU imposed to prevent harmonic vibrations in the tailshaft breaking it free from the gearbox. The shorter wheelbase Falcon’s possibly diudn’t have it. The XR models did but it was set to 250 kmph.

Brain without formalin is degraded in 24 hours, yet the bullshit claims that Lundy fluked air drying, which even that ratbag du Plessis would declare in court is actually the worst method to get an identifiable forensic sample for pathology.
    Mark Cooper agreed that this gunk was not shown to be of human origin. Raynor Asher stated in court this was a missing link. So the substance, if of cellular origin, was PRESERVED.

    Isn’t it a question how that sample got onto the shirt and no where else at all on his clothing ? I think it was alleged that he must have worn a protective suit that presumably was disposed of and never found. So why the little spot getting through, contamination when removing the protective layer, was that the theory ?
    
    The preservation state is another question, but DNA can certainly be extracted from much older samples.

      In appeal court it was stated and unchallenged by prosecutor Morgan that cow sheep and pig dna were extracted from the sample, but no human dna. Christine’s dna was in the vicinity.
      She did the ironing, and the family used cold water surf. The greasy spot survived the wash, and she rubbed it to disguise, conferring the dna and the smeared in result.

A hotel maid who claims she was brutally sexually assaulted by Dominique Strauss-Kahn has settled her civil action against the former IMF chief for an undisclosed sum, in a move that allows her to “move on with her life”, lawyers said. [….]

The lawsuit settled in New York on Monday relates to claims by Nafissatou Diallo, a 33-year-old former housekeeper at the upmarket Sofitel hotel in Manhattan.

She says Strauss-Kahn attacked her on 14 May 2011 as she attempted to clean his room.

Diallo alleges that Strauss-Kahn ran at her naked, molested her and forced her to perform oral sex on him. The claims led to a criminal investigation against the IMF boss last year, and to his house arrest in Manhattan.

But charges of attempted rape, sex abuse, forcible touching and unlawful imprisonment were eventually dropped, with prosecutors citing “substantial credibility issues” with Diallo.

I am interested in the Horald’s front page photo of an experienced Teacher who after 43 years only earns $59,000 and her qualified son earns more than she does because he has a paper from some irrelevant university.
After he many years experience you would have thought that Teachers such as herself would have insisted along with many others that they become a real Profession.
But no, they have been totally controlled by the Unions who are only interested in themselves.
She and many others have been under the thumb of the Unions and now wonders why she only has such a salary after many years of service.
Sadly she and the others in a similar position do not have anybody to blame but themselves.
I try to sound empathetic but really and sadly am not.
No wonder the education of our children is so bad as it is Union promulgated for so many years and is going to get no better.

        When she was interviewed she said the course she did was reconfigured as a degree course a few years after she graduated, with minimal change in content. Later if you wanted to upgrade to a degree you had to do an extra year of study.
        To me the BS is that, thanks to unionisation, her salary is restricted.
        
        I don’t have a degree, but because I can negotiate my salary based on my 20+ years experience in IT and my ability, I can command a better than average salary.
        
        If schools and teachers were to break with the unions and pay there staff what they were worth, some teachers would earn less, and some more. I bet this lady would command a much better salary, even more than the ~$72,000 she says her son gets. At least she would if she is worth it.
        Go charter schools! Oh, I forget, this unelected screw up of a gubernment scraped charter schools without a mandate and against all evidence that they were successful!

        I once worked in an office whereby the owner attracted people to work for him by offering as much as it took to entice them away from their current employment. So there was a number of employees of similar ability with widely differing salaries.
        I would suggest that if there was no salary restrictions for teachers the high decile schools would raise money from their community to make sure they had a full compliment of teachers as they do now with, for example, 1st XV coaches.

Whites, on the other hand, will burn an entire country, or even continent to the ground if pushed. Personally, I wish we did less of that kind of thing, but we ARE really good at it, and that’s also a separate issue.

If you are so concerned about whatever culture you come from getting erased by white people, why do you insist on living among us? If we are so terrible, and such a threat to your culture, shouldn’t you go back to wherever it is your people come from? You should. But, you don’t, and won’t. You won’t admit this, but these problems you bitch about are far outweighed by your desire to live in one of our countries. In white societies, third worlders are provided with a far higher standard of living than your countries and people are capable of providing for themselves, and you all know it.   Maybe for you but certainly not for me and most of the rest of the world. A trip to the supermarket to grab a few essentials, “sorry, no car available for you at the moment as all local vehicles are on loan to your neighbours at the hairdressers”.
  
  How about a quick trip to Taupo for a weekend, “sorry, all vehicles in your vicinity have low battery levels and cannot make the journey, please check next month”.

  Those same tech analysts assured us in the 1960s that we’d all have flying cars and moon holidays before 2000. Still not happening.
  
  Back in the 70s and 80s those same tech analysts were talking about all the stuff artificial intelligence & robotics would be doing within 20 years. Still not happening.
  
  And peak oil. And electric everything. And super conductors…
  
  Look at any street scene in NZ. It looks identical to 25 years ago, except for people carrying around cell phones. Come back in another 25 and it will still look the same.

    I have a wonderful old book, Whites Aviation aerial photos of all NZ towns, published in 1960.
    On the last page there is a map showing a non-stop air route between Auckland and London taking only 12 hours, which they say would be happening ‘within a decade’.
    They missed that target by about as much as these autonomous car geeks are going to miss theirs.

      Well the Concorde can do the distance in less than 9 hours in the air but would need two refuelling stops.
      
      But your point is well taken, people who think we’re going to have ubiquitous self-driving cars are naive. They just don’t understand how challenging it is.
      
      I did some artificial intelligence post-grad work in the mid 1980s and we have hardly moved from there (except for some small incremental improvements due to having faster computers etc).
      
      I also worked on automated steering in the early 2000s. It is easy in a very well constrained environment (which is why we have things like autopilots for planes), but controlling vehicles through chaotic cities is a nightmare. Humans do way, way, better.

  It might take more than twenty years, but the implications of the dominance of the self-driving car will definitely change driving attitudes.
  
  I suspect car-ownership will drop. Maybe not to zero but a significant proportion of the population will forego the expense. There’s even a attitude change to car ownership with the millennial generation. Compared to previous generations they appear to be slower to get their driver’s license…if at all.

      Add that into self driving cars (whenever they actually become available) and I suspect personal automobile ownership will drop substantially.

  The problem with the shared car model is that it is based on the broken assumption that cars are only used a few hours a day and thus, by sharing them, we can make more use of the same car.
  
  Great, except we all want the car at the same time.
  
  We all want to go to work/take the kids to school/go home/whatever at the same time.
  
  If Pete has already taken the car to go home, then Mike is going to have to wait until Pete has been dropped off and the car gets back. Tonight Pete only gets home at 7.30.
  
  We all want to go to the beach/on holiday/whatever at the same time.
  
  Secondly we want our private cars because, frankly, shared cars are going to get messed up. Fred takes his huge messy dog to the beach and Steve has to put up with a sandy/slobbered car. Hugh goes on a hunting trip – oops, blood on the carpet!
  
  As for self driving cars…. still way further off than people think.

  I may buy into the idea that my kids generation is the last one that will be required to get a drivers licence]. I estimate that by the time my grand kids are old enough to drive, self driving cars may be good enough that you can opt to get a full licence or only ever be driven. But they will generally still want their own cars.

  We’re really good at making car parts after a hundred years of doing it. That’s why cars are cheaper and more reliable than any time in history.
  
  EVs are expensive to make because the batteries are expensive. They’re relatively heavy and need more beefy suspension etc.

    There are still significant developments needed – battery technology especially, but it is possible that in 20-30 years they may become as cheap as and as long-ranged as the internal combustion competitors. they may even have an environmental impact as low as an IC car rather than one nearly twice as large.

Taken separately, a fair-minded person could say the authors of these and still more unfairly anti-Kavanaugh reports were merely ignorant or sloppy. But taken all together – and mind you, this doesn’t even include the commentaries – it paints a far more damaging picture for some of the nation’s most prestigious and vaunted newsrooms.

From the smaller errors to the more egregious ones (like NBC’s decision to air the Swetnick interview), there’s only one thing that ties all the awful reporting together. Every single story worked against Kavanaugh, as if with a unity of purpose intended to ensure that he would never be given a fair chance to clear his good name and reach the Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh has a lifetime appointment now, which may or may not be worth what he had to put up with to get it. But the clear victim here is the credibility of the news media itself, which has suffered far more damage than any number of attacks by President Trump could inflict upon it.

I got an insight into the blind love for Jacinda yesterday. I was talking to a lovely old lady and happened to mention the government. She then told me how much she loved Jacinda. After overcoming my shock I explained a few things about the state of the country as many others currently saw it, and that Jacinda didn’t seem to have much of a clue as to what she was doing. The reply I got – “But she is loved in America.” I asked how this conclusion was reached – the reply I got was “Didn’t you see it on the news? They love her.” Oh God I thought – the propaganda of our MSM news is working well, and these people get to vote with this blind logic! I walked away convinced that we are screwed for all time!

Just to start a fight with all the atheists here 🙂

All belief systems (‘religious’ in the traditional sense, and secular belief systems) appeal to the intrinsic religious nature of man. We all operate within ‘value hierarchies’ as Jordan Peterson would have it. We act because we believe in something, not because we fully understand that thing. I act because I believe, not because I know. We all place some form of trust (faith) in something outside of ourselves and our personal experience and act in accord with that trust/belief system. We are therefore all religious in some sense.

After that the only question that remains is whether the particular belief system is adequate for purpose; does it provide a proper basis for structuring our lives, and how does it stack up against other competitive belief systems? That in essence is the only question that matters.

Most atheists just have an article of faith that life and existence are good and worth doing for the enjoyment they bring – the alternative is suicide which ends that line of thinking pretty quickly. Being good and decent in your treatment of other people brings all sorts of benefits from a game theory analysis (as they are likewise good to you). And societies that generally practice the golden rule (treat others as you would like to be treated) strongly outperform the ones that don’t. Religions just codify rules of interaction (and economics) that derive from evolution and game theory developed over thousands of years of competition with societies having different rules of interaction.

    Your reference to the Golden Rule is interesting – it is a direct reference to the teachings of Christ and does not arise from evolution or game theory; it is a religious teaching (that it can be argued we all derive some benefit from, at least where it is actual practice). But it is not in the least a ‘rational’ response to the uncertainties of life. In fact it could be argued that the rational response could equally be the ruthless exploitation of others for one’s own profit or benefit. What would be irrational about that approach? That would accord more closely with Darwinist evolutionary principles wouldn’t it?

      Article of faith is a philosophical term for something that you cannot provide a rational argument for believing. It does not imply any belief in sky fairies. Athiests need at least one article of faith to provide a reason to get up in the morning. Theists typically have hundreds or thousands of contradictory, mean, obsolete, or outright stupid articles of faith.
      
      The golden rule is nothing to do with Christianity, it evolves in essentially all martially technological societies and amongst some social animals as a means to optimise cooperative efforts to build the martial strength of a group (of whatever size) and allow it to compete more effectively with other groups that will otherwise subsume or wipe you out through superior cooperative efforts. Game theory presents good explanations of how and why it works.

        Forget all the ‘sky fairies’ nonsense you use to disparage the traditionally religious: you are operating from the same basic human impulses in the nature of your own belief system. You can come up with whatever justifications you want for your own religious beliefs, but that is all it is – a religion.

Religion or Theism is belief in sky fairies. Atheism is non-belief in sky fairies. It’s right there in the word. It is a religion in the same way that not playing tennis is a sport.
        
        Religion does seem to have some use in a martial sense – as a way of convincing young men to risk their lives fighting in non-defensive wars for the benefit of the group, which has generally terrible risk/reward metrics for the young men unless you factor in the raping etc that tended to go with conquest. … But why? To find out I asked economist Shamubeel Eaqub and housing expert Hugh Pavletich about the main problems keeping house prices so high. Here are the three main problems they raised.

1. Land supply

Eaqub said that “by far the biggest culprit behind higher house prices … is the cost of land.”

Since 1995 land costs have risen 73 per cent faster than incomes, he wrote in his book.

Land is expensive because there is not enough that can be used for housing. A lot of land is tied up in complex and restrictive planning rules.

Restrictions on land use constrict the supply of homes, Eaqub said.

Pavletich and Eaqub agreed that we should expand the city limits and build high density housing in the city centre.

2. Infrastructure funding

Land without infrastructure is just a paddock.

The roads, sewerage and powerlines needed for new homes are expensive.

Councils have under funded infrastructure for decades and are reluctant to borrow money to pay for it because that is politically unpopular.

Changes since the late 1980s, like privatising public assets, also mean councils are less able to fund infrastructure, Eaqub said.

“Councils were stripped of their assets,” he said.

“Councils went from having lots of sources of income to just rates for infrastructure funding.”

Pavletich said councils lost control of their costs.

“They could not keep up with growth and meet their infrastructure requirements.”

“Costs have blown out and they haven’t got the money to do it.”

This means land that could be used for housing often remains a paddock.

Eaqub said that liberal economic reform in the late 1980s, known as Rogernomics, also changed the housing market because people could more easily borrow money.

“The pre-1980s banking system was very differently regulated and you couldn’t get any money. That was gradually lessening from the 1960s onwards.” … read more via hyperlink above …

Explains why I’m still so out of whack – noon is now at the wrong time throwing my whole time sense out. Wouldn’t have been a big deal if the change had been gradual.

If someone carries a knife and commits a crime self defense should not be allowed. This was murder and the law should be changed to reflect this.

    That’s a person is committing a crime against you or your property and you get a knife or happen to have a knife. Very different from committing a crime while in possession of a knife with the intention of using it to fight off arrest.
    
    The self defence comment is incorrect in this case as the defence was “I didn’t intend to kill”

      It was a comment on sex crimes not DV. But if you like some info. The police identify the woman as the DV offender 35% of the time but make up only 10% of arrests. Male arrest is arbitrary. As for sex crimes by women against men the arrest rate is about 0.0%
      
      Maybe she shouldn’t have assaulted him just because he was drunk. Or left him for being useless. Got a protection order if she was needing to protect herself, then his arrest no matter what she does is arbitrary. Respectable woman? In public but behind closed doors slightly less?

  The Labour Party they were the ones trying to hide the fact and giving poor advice to those that were assaulted. When you try to get the victims to change their minds about charging the perpetrator you are playing with fire and tampering with justice, you could bet your bottom dollar if the victim was their daughter they wouldn’t have given the same advice.

    Some people in National think the public do not like muck raking and even if the offender was family one should no pick on family. That is right to a point. If a MP’s child rapes and/or murders that may not be the MP’s fault. However, if the MP and others in the party try to cover things up the public have a right to know. Women can’t murder men.

That’s why the term manslaughter was created.

I can’t be bothered with the list of stabbed in their sleep, axed from behind, strangled while tied up, promised sex to kill for them, blah blah…. It would make those male killing partners, regurgitated DV stats look good if I did that.

The pussy pass industry for murder even wants killing male partners an entry in the crimes act as a defence. No proof required.

  After 17 domestic violence convictions and protection orders the male waited in hiding for his former partner to return home. While confronting her trying to enter her house he violently pushed her down the stairs killing her. The man lied about the event until years later the police gained a confession. The man was given a non custodial sentence as his violence towards her was minimal and he meant no harm by pushing her. Men lie all the time and are always violent, hence the 17 events, and protection orders are only bits of paper, so no time was added to the “manslaughter” conviction.
  
  If something smells fishy it was the pussy pass. The “violent killer” is obviously female. No male can get to 17 DV convictions or protection order breaches without long prison time. Let alone the 10 years plus they would get for manslaughter.

TV One is promoting their news with an item about the Government’s ‘ambitious’ plan to involve more women in sport. Pictures of Ardern surrounded by aadoring young women etc etc.

Here’s the thing – $10 Mil of our money will be spent. Given the plan is ‘ambitious’, I’d expect some actual stats and targets – eg 40% of girls between 5 and 18 take part in some organised sport, we will increase that to 60% etc etc.

What’s the bet that there will be no measurable targets apart from the $10Mil spend. After 3 years we will have no idea whether the money was well spent. This will be nothing more than a typical Labour/Ardern promo shoot leading our news.

So, the now routinely-ignored IPCC says that limiting global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2050 will
1. Cost $US900 billion, requiring a restructuring of global finance and wealth
2. See industrial emissions at 75–90% lower than 2010, aka de-industrialization
3. Implement a fundamental re-designation of land which is almost certainly be societally and/or environmentally unacceptable.

Ardern didn’t get the memo. She’s stuck in a teenage climate catastrophe mindset, far, far away from the facts.

She sounds as if the world was going to end if we did not act right now.

As I have said if they are really serious they will tell India and twenty other countries to reduce their useless populations now.

We here in NZ are OK as any emissions we make are in the interest of feeding many people in the world.
Just as much Chinese population is created making the products we buy all over the world.
