Yesterday at Pak & Save (the cheapest supermarket) –

Butter: (budget brand) $6.80

Two lamb shanks (large) $19.10

It’s the poor people and those on fixed incomes I feel sorry for. Going to be a lean Christmas for some.

Every three years off they trot to the voting booth and tick for a bit more regulation and tax – or a bit less regulation and tax.

Kiwis are slow learners. The one representative in the House whose Party would slash regulation and tax does not even register in the polls.

  To be fair Duggledog….the ‘poor’ people buy margarine or some spread that’s not butter and lamb shanks isn’t top of their shopping list (Christmas or not), cheaper cuts and mince is on their list. Chickens can still be bought cheaply and for $19.10, they can buy 3 medium chickens or 2 large ones. I agree that we here in NZ are awash with dairy and we pay so much it’s almost a rip off…lamb is cheaper in London than here, butter is just a joke…try Beef Cheeks, great cut but needs lots of cooking, unfortunately even those have almost doubled in price in last 2yrs or so. Blame cooking shows on TV 🙂

        Skirt steak is called Onglet in France…and its loved as a full flavored steak for sandwiches or sliced after cooking and served with fries. Its fooking fantastic. But you do not serve it as a whole piece it needs to be sliced then rested.

        You can’t go wrong with slow-cooked casseroles/curries/stews if you don’t know how else to cope with those cuts.

        Use the rump as BB suggests, the rest just cut into mouth size hunks, throw in a large pot (or slow cooker) with a few onions (quartered – peeled if you prefer), liquid beef stock (enough to cover the meat) and a handful of black peppercorns.
        
        I like to throw in about half a cup of HOT Thai chilli sauce but that is of course optional, you may use HP spicy or any other red sauce not based on sugar – i.e. not bloody Watties crap.
        
        Cook just above boiling for as long as you can – adding water when/if you need to, up to eight hours and then thicken it with cornflower.
        
        You can eat it over a week or so depending how hungry you are.
        
        I like to add spuds or rice and always have bread to soak up the gravy. Tastes better every feed.

    I’m a fan of skirt steak. It is still cheap because most people don’t know how to cook it. Great in the slow cooker.
    
    Unfortunately too many low income folk are stuck on frozen chicken nuggets and $1 bread loaves. They either don’t know about or can’t get to Sunday vege markets.

        Because if you harvest all or a lot of the juveniles there will be not be a generation to replace the older stock.. that is also being harvested/predated/ dying off.
        
        It’s a bit like taking all eggs from a nest….. if something happens to the parents… that’s the end of the line……(probably how Moa went extinct….. easier to harvest eggs and flightless chicks than hunt big birds)

  So true, approximately half the country are completely idiotic. At around 8PM last Friday I noticed we were out of (nice wholesome) bread, but being the long weekend it took me 5 supermarkets to get what I wanted, but in that time what I saw on the roads and around Chch explained to me why 50% voted Labour, Greens, and Winston First. How much better could the union-led TV1 have timed their poll to do the maximum damage to the Nats? But National actually came out of it better than expected, which will piss the MSM off.
How much different would the poll have been if it had happened in the middle of the Curren/Fightery meltdown? The bastards made sure that was never going to happen.
However it does seem that National’s choice of leader was not the right one.
Two years to fix it and take the CoL to the slaughterhouse.

    As much as I love Judith, the Slater connection may mean caucus digs their toes in. If we learn’t anything last week- it was that 55 National MPs are 100% united in their hatred of JLR, 1 even wants hims 6 foot under. JLR has become the Avatar of Lusk and Slater- Slater end game is to see Judith as leader, so he once more can become the inside man. Caucus will not want to grant them their wish.         Funny MrsAnnie watching OQT today the silly little girl was very agitated ending up becoming barking mad as a major issue she thought was clouded by the Ross sage returned. Rising fuel prices was reintroduced by Simon Bridges who quietly posed a string of questions that was just too much for her. So after accusing him of making stuff up in another round of scaremongering she lost the plot. She ended up making policy on the fly with a statement to the House. No more RFT will be introduced while she is PM. The pressure shows when she sits down after each question with that stark schoolgirl like pout and her hand holding her mouth shut. Perhaps she is really the weakest link in the COL as she certainly showed how dumb she is today. The funniest thing her constant claims they are doing something about what they think is oil companies fault and they are “doing something about it” To which we must eventually as they have not even started the process of massaging the Commerce Bill. Then there will be a protracted space of an inquiry before their findings reviewed (read adjusted) before any action is taken. Such action subject to implementation which not be overnight. She has her faithful followers swallowing every word while she thinks talking about something is “doing something”. Now on top of all these questions she has the worry of her in house stud breaking away from the boundary fence to head off fishing? In springtime? Bet that is a log way from her plan A. Eh.

  My take on the polling numbers is that the question that should be asked is why did Nationals support not drop? I wouldn’t necessarily say National voters are loyal, more that they have no where else to go. Labour, NZ First, and Greens are not an option and with no other viable party, Nats are the choice.
  To me this is more of an interesting poll for NZF than anyone else. With all that has happened over the last week, they couldn’t take any Nat votes. So if they want to get away from the precarious position that they find themselves in, then they will need to take those votes off Labour.

      Thanks Paulus it has been a harsh initiation for Simon Bridges over the last couple of weeks where he has been put to the test of handling a crises. Not a faultless process but he makes no bones about it giving credit to the team he has so diligently established. It again has the COL smarting every time he gives credit to the for their support but more significantly their united loyalty. This is a strength the COL find hardest to counter as they still struggle individually and together across the board. Another example today when Jones was answering on behalf of Twyford who is i witless protection. Paul Goldsmith spotted the gaps and asked “When did the Minster find out about the new policy today of no new RTF stated by the PM?” He rose and could only say on behalf of the Minister” only when the PM stated it in an earlier question.” A real two moons moment.       Expect more and more shrill harping from the media frontsmen (done deliberately) which will turn more and more voters away from labour. They don’t understand that the bulk of NZ does not hang on their every word.

    A lot of water has gone under the bridge since the last poll, so it’s hard to know how much of it is due to Ross. Perhaps a poll that finished just before the Ross meltdown would have had National over 50% and Labour under 40% due to the fuel taxes, Curran, Whaitiri, Haumaha, etc. Also this poll took place as the Ross saga was unfolding. We really don’t know.

      Look at the poor media coverage of Curran, Meka the masher, fuel taxes, Haumaha, Camp Molestation and so on.
      
      Now look at the coverage of JLR which in the grand scale of things is fairly irrelevant with National being the only major opposition party.

      I think you are right- we know polling was over 5 days. Wednesday polling was in the 30’s.
      Two key questions- What was it like on Monday? What was it like Friday?
      The average was 43%. My guess is either Monday was 46-50% territory or we had a solid rebound to 43-45% on Friday in order to provide that 43% average. Its not a leap to assume Wednesday by itself will have provided 1 point to Labour and 0.5 points to NZ First.
      In Summary- without Wednesday Labour and Nats would be even or the Nats would be ahead and NZ First would be below 5%.

  CM, agree with you about the polls. The narrative is now the Nats are on the slide, based on last week’s story. But a hard look at the story, shows it is not about the National Party per se, but about a disgruntled psychopathic trio trying to stir disunity and sling mud at National/Bridges because of perceived grievances. Seems to me the National caucus just wants to get on with the job. There is a problem to deal with, but the urgency seems to have gone off.
    I have wondered whether any legal action against his ‘mentors’ is possible. Being charged with ‘criminal nuisance’ perhaps.
    Now Winston has jumped claiming he received the same sort of treatment from National. He is highly hypocritical since he would not tolerate a renegade MP in his party – at best he would ‘deselect’ the person next time around and at worst kick the person out of Parliament using his Waka hopper law.

        I bet Winston was quite happy with that ‘buy-back’ policy until he copped an earful from his Grey Power (excuse the pun) constituents who had purchased some of these shares, then double crossed his MP. Same with ‘three strikes’ repeal, seems it had been discussed and OK’d with Winston who then backtracked at the last minute leaving Andy hanging out to dry.
        And if Simon does use the Waka hopper legislation to boot Jami out of Parliament, Winston would no doubt claim the legislation was never intended for that purpose (Tui time).

  True, Colmar Brunton was a disgrace, we all know they jettisoned they’re scheduled opinion polls for a more upto date survey. But this is not time consistent, it isn’t double blind either, because the participants were obviously being coached by the supplementary questions. Often these polls have a 5% who are not sure who they would vote for, because many don’t pay attention to politics but when you educate them during the process over JLR they go “Oh can I go back and change my original answer?” Did previous polls have a “What did you think of Jacinda’s costing taxpayer’s $100k for an unnecessary one day round trip to the islands, on a Hercules when she is supposed to care about climate change?” Never, just fake polls from a fake news outlet. Slater and Lusk seemed to have given Jami the high octane fuel then try and blame National for the consequences.   A had a boss many years ago who was of the greenie persuasion. He proclaimed quite loudly that we didn’t need all of our modern appliances and could do without them easily. I knew he had a wife and two teenage daughters (he liked to mention this fact a lot).
  
  Since he was so adamant about not needing all of today’s conveniences, I decided to target the female weakpoint. I said I would get him to remove one modern appliance from his life for a month. I would need to write up a list of tasks he and his household would need to do to substitute for the modern appliance. Not that he knew it, but I decided that the modern washing machine should go (since he had a wife and two daughters) – he apologised and rescinded his attitude an hour afterwards. This was rather wise of him, since after an hour I hadn’t finished compiling the list of things that were required.
  
  You know, fetching the water for the copper, chopping up the firewood to heat the copper, starting the fire an old way (not modern techniques), let alone making the wash powder and so on and so forth.
  
  I deliberately chose this one facet because I suspected that his wife would divorce him over it.
  
  Modern women, as a whole, have no concept how easy their life is compared to yesteryear. Keeping the household running was a full time occupation for the average woman. The luxury of joining the “workforce” simply wasn’t an option.

    Maybe some women, but not all. I can still remember watching my Nana washing the laundry using her old-fashioned roller washing machine – it was definitely not a quick task. Adn even that was apparently a huge improvement over *no* washing machine.
    
    Add to that the automatic dishwasher, dryer and vacuum cleaner – none of which I had when I was younger – when you’ve regularly swept up your carpet on your hands and knees you definitely appreciate modern appliances a lot more.
    
    My life is a lot easier thanks to modern technology, however….. given that as a single working woman I can whip round the house and keep immaculate in approx 15 minutes a day (plus a bit longer on the weekends to clean the bathroom properly) it really does make me wonder what the hell stay-at-home mums do all day, once the kids are at school? I DO understand in the case of pre-schoolers.

    Lusk would be pushing the line that National should have ‘looked after’ Jami. WO said that Lusk advised budding MP’s to ask their parties how they would be ‘looked after’ after leaving politics. I responded on WO that if a budding Nat MP had not ‘made it’ career-wise before considering whether to stand, she or he would not even stand.
    He betrayed his party by leaking the expenses so had to face the consequences (which would be obvious to anyone in that position). He could have done ‘damage control’ but chose not to (his ‘mentors’ should have advised that).
    So National should have ‘looked after’ him by hitting him with a wet bus ticket and telling him not to do it again. You must be joking!

      The irony of all this is, of course, that for weeks a certain blogger was telling National they had to “rinse” the person who leaked Bridges’ travel expenses. How do we know he has any mental health problems at all? The Nats leadership says he has, but JLR may have claimed that to them as the reason he has so many complaints.

The reason for my cynicism is that in today’s media, the only way out for a man with a history of years of abusing people and exploiting women is to claim it’s a mental health issue.

    Release of JRL by the hospital yesterday & his talking to the media via his friends should be a clear indication that he & his friends are trying to manage a story for news consumption. Rather than there being anything wrong with him in a clinical sense.

Regardless of whether we think 43% is a good result for National, the issue remains that they are a party on their own in Parliament and until a viable center-right partnership party comes along the chances of regaining the Treasury benches are slim in an MMP environment – especially when electorate seats can be gerry-mandered to suit.

What is even more concerning is that 46% of those polled would vote Labour if an election was held today, despite and environment of rising costs, rising unemployment and business confidence (and therefore employment investment) at a long-time low.

  Next election it’s back to first past the post. Greens have made it clear they won’t go with National. NZ first, who have previously gained unhappy national supporters votes, has made it clear they won’t go with National. Although when asked directly he hummed and haaad but Winston’s hatred for National is clear. So next election there is two choices, National or the COL. National doesn’t need a coalition partner. National needs to make it absolutely clear, that only a vote for National is a vote for change. If the economy sucks there is only one change vote. Anything else is a vote for a Labour led govt.

After watching last nights taxpayer funded Colmar Brunton poll on TVNZ,some results would ensure there would be no sleep last night for NZs Megalomaniac Peters. His party certainly got a wake up call. NZF just sneaked into the MMP threshold of 5%. Peters himself got 4% or third out of three people polled as NZs leader.

So no new regional fuel taxes while Jacinda is PM. Interesting. Are we to then take it:

1) The Auckland fuel tax will be repealed out on the grounds of equity?
2) That the Govt is just going to underwrite other council’s largesse with the tax revenue collected from Auckland, but expects Auckland to keep paying for Auckland?
3) That, if no other Council needed it, the regional fuel tax can be attributed as a ‘help a brother out’/’get out of debt drawdown issues free’ card for long-time stalwart Goff?
4) That the benefit adjustments that Labour made instead of tax cuts to all NZers have resulted in Government-driven inequality in Auckland relative to the rest of the country – again, underwitten by Aucklanders?
5) That the whole thing is a captain’s call bugger’s muddle and further legislative changes they campaigned on will just be abandoned once the Nats start to score points with them, regardless of the merits they so breathlessly blubbed on about in opposition?

Or, you know, like, whatever.

    They should report him to NZTA. Someone with his mental health should not be driving.
    
    Someone should offer his wife good legal advice. If he gets sued for defamation before they have a property separation agreement it will cost her.

      Good points, Chuck. As soon as this story broke it brought to mind Peters’ forecast that Bridges’ days were numbered. I would not be remotely surprised if Slater/Ross/Lusk were keeping Peters briefed. Too much of a coincidence, otherwise.
      Bridges came through this with honour intact, unlike Ross and, especially, Slater. Peters will be livid that he was fed a pack of lies and has ended up looking like the twat crying wolf as per usual.
