Over on WhaleOil, Cam Slater is promising another revelation in the Jami-Lee Ross saga today at 11 that will prove that Simon Bridges is a liar who tried to kill Ross (or something like that).

The taped Bridges-Ross phone call was supposed to prove that Bridges knew about illegal donation splitting.
Ross’ texts with Greg Hamilton were supposed to prove that National’s party secretary was covering it up.
The text Ross received from his MP mistress was supposed to prove that Ross was actually the victim.

Forgive me for being skeptical about Slater’s latest big claim…

I see zero evidence to support Slater’s theory that Ross was set up. And the theory has a big unexplained hole — motive: why on earth would National do this?

If anyone is setting Ross up and ignoring his mental health, it’s his so-called friends like Slater. It’s sad. I feel sorry for Ross, as he is just being used to further their vendetta against National’s leadership. I just want to see the end of this sorry saga. (Apologies for commenting about it.)

    What a ridiculous rant. If Slater has the evidence he claims to have, why hasn’t he used it? And, are we really supposed to believe that Bridges is a liar based on (a) what Slater claims Bridges said and (b) Slater’s secret evidence to the contrary.

      Slater is free to speak or, rather, blog. I just don’t agree with his vendetta politics. I try not to read WhaleOil, but I’ve revisited the site because the Jami-Lee Ross saga has briefly made it relevant and I am reminded of why I stopped reading.

  Interesting to the revelation of the man behind much of this saga (had to be one somewhere) -close friend of Slater as well and called second father of Ross – named as Paul Honnor with whom both Ross and Slater attended his Seventh Day Adventist Church in Manukau.
  He is a multi millionaire who lives in Paratai Drive and has had apparently a very close personal association with both of them.
  They are “looking after” Ross somewhere. Paratai Drive possibly.
  It is understood that all of them have copies of all Ross’s conversations and texts.
  Lusk should not be left out of this also.
  Looks as though Tova O’Brien has been taken in and appears to be absent currently from her usual TV front spot with her pedantic diatribe.

  If Jami was so smart he would not have been led by the nose and would have thought for himself. Assuming he had a brain fart and hence leaked that information he would have known he was potentially in trouble and should have damage controlled it (reading Dale Carniegie’s ‘How to Stop Worrying and Start Living’ would have been a good start). He should have ‘fessed up and accepted the probable consequence of a 20 place demotion in the House and re-allocation of spokesperson duties. His big asset is being an electorate MP with a decent majority, so he a list demotion would not have affected his chances. He would then have had two years to redeem himself and show that that the leak was a momentary lack of judgment. If Simon Lusk is all he is cracked up to be as a candidate adviser, that is the advice Simon should have given him. Instead he chose to tough it out, then chose to lash out at Simon Bridges and National when he realised the game was probably up (seems PWC could not come up with complete proof, but Jami was not to know this at the time – if you are interrogated by the police you are at a disadvantage since you do not know what the Police may know).
  Therefore I do not feel sorry for Jami. He should have had the human interactive skille and political skills and instinct to have sorted this out. In particular he should have thought for himself and not be led by the nose by those with ‘other’ agendas.
  He is in a similar situation to this woman who lost her house because she was advised by a ‘mentor’ she did not need to pay her rates. I felt a bit sorry for her, but not Jami. He should have known better.
  Interesting Winston Peters commented he received similar treatment from National. They were both well placed in the National Party and showed promise, with Winston being thought to be a future leader. But both got impatient and were not prepared to work within the Party framework. A bit of tolerance and patience on Winston’s part could have seen him as a legitimate Prime Minister, then knighthood, etc and a place in NZ history. Similar with Jami – he would at the very least been placed 4th or better in Cabinet with important portfolios or even in the top job.

    Peterwn I would say if MP’s haven’t learn’t by now that blubber is toxic and their is no place for any of them if they want to feed him information then they shouldn’t be in the National Party. From before 2014 blubber has caused so much damage to himself through Dirty Politics and now this that it not hard to see that some members will leave National through the media’s continually pushing his association with National.

      Surely he realises that weakening National just makes it harder for the person he wants to be leader to actually win an election. These sorts of allegations do long term brand damage. If National made Collins leader tomorrow we all know the CoL are going to hammer Collins day in day out about Oravida and “Dirty Politics” nonsense. And when they aren’t doing it their puppets in the media will be doing it. So Collins will have all that and the JLR fiasco to deal with. Slater is a disloyal moron.

    That was a painfully self-righteous article to read. Hager is trying to tie Collins to this mess on the grounds that she might benefit. However, I don’t see this as beneficial to anyone in National.
    
    I don’t know if Collins has any involvement in this. I am inclined to believe that she has nothing to do with it until I see evidence to the contrary.

The Government has a announced that the planned expressway from Otaki to North of Levin will not proceed. Instead, it will construct a new two lane road.

This is shortsighted. Along the same lines as the 1977 decision to build one Terrace tunnel instead of two as planned.

The article is also another example of poor journalsim. When I saw the headline referring to the road getting the “green light” I assumed that the expressway as originally planned was to proceed. In fact when I read the article and it referred to a “two lane” road I thought it was an error. But no.

  Srylands, a 2 lane will NOT help with congestion that is the Otaki chokepoint. I see they are also saying we will build a 2 lane extension but could add an extra 2 lanes at a later date if needed, well what a waste of bloody tax payer money as the extra 2 lanes WILL be needed very soon after it’s completed and will cost the same to add the 2 extra lanes as the original 2 lane one proposed. If these MP’s that voted for this had ever ran a business or any experience of working outside government they would see it’s a terrible decision to just have 2 lanes…sheesh, what a bad decision!

    Yes. An anecdote. In 1928 when plans for the Sydney Harbour Bridge were released, it was for 8 lanes of traffic, two rail lines and two footpaths. Many politicians at the time tried to have it downgraded as the Depression hit a year into construction. After all the capacity was way in excess of what was needed right through to the 1960s..
    
    Anyway the NSW Premier won the argument. If only we had more leaders with that foresight.
    
    If this road is built with two lanes that will be it for the next 50 years.

      Auckland Harbour Bridge was origonally intended to have 4/5 lanes, 2 footpaths and 2 rail lines.
      
      Hesitance to fund the full cost resulted in a 4 lane bridge… Typical short-sighted NZ.

        It wasn’t just the Bridge that was going to cost a lot more in 8 lanes, but the entire approach infrastructure. I don’t think there were very many km’s of road anywhere in NZ with more than 2 lanes in both directions at the time, in fact possibly none.
        
        But it was short sighted and the bridge and the approaches had to be scaled up pretty quickly.

    Otaki bypass already under construction. They’re not going ahead with the piece between Otaki & Levin. I’m ok with that. Levin will be the first traffic lights after the Terrace tunnel going north & at least has side roads.

    Labour has a long history of short sighted, cheap infrastructure. The Nash Government sold all of NZs gold reserves to build the incompetently small Auckland Harbour bridge. Several billions worth for something now worth nothing. The last Clark Government spent like half a billion on Chch Women’s hospital and it was instantly too small and poorly laid out.

  Having just done a month behind the wheel in Italy, over there a 2nd class highway, strada statale (sp?) is a 2 lane each way road with a concrete divider and no power poles on the edges. Not always that flat but still its 140 km/hr.
  That is the minimum we should be aiming for from Kaitaia to Bluff.

  I am told that there have been 19 road deaths (1/3rd of Auckland total) on SH1 between Puhoi and Wellsford in the last year. That is 35km of road (.04% of NZ road network) responsible for about 5% of all NZ road deaths.
  
  There is an 18km motorway extension Puhoi to Warkworth to be completed in 2021. But the govt has just cancelled plans to extend the motorway to Wellsford (about $1billion) so they can spend up on cycleways and trams etc. #Murderousgreenfuckwits.

        And electric trains in Auckland, plus they gave in to Brown and provided early funding to CRL (a monumental waste of money). CRL is already forecast to be over $6bn and they have yet to let the contract for the tunneling machine and the additional rail cars for when the tunnel opens.
        
        Oh to be able to waste money in such a fashion without being held accountable.

Well…well, letter bombs containing ‘suspicious white powder’ sent to prominent Democrats, ex-President Obama and Soro’s, Just 2 weeks out from a hotly contested mid-term election that both sides are predicting a Red wave/Blue wave of support and if is a blue wave it would see the Democrats retake the house.

Perhaps I’m being overly sceptical, but if the person(s) who sent these letter bombs are far right extremists and hate the Democrats and the left in general…why would they do this so close to the mid-terms and in doing so have boosted the Democrats chances greatly and at the same time as bolster the lefts rhetoric of ‘the right is out to get us and destroy democracy’.

It very well maybe some disgruntled far right splinter group (that obviously have no idea of how politics work)
It very well maybe some outside the USA group looking to disrupt American politics (Russia, China, Iran….too obvious and not in their immediate interest)
It very well maybe a left/Democratic ploy by some antifa group to swing mid-terms to sway Democratic sympathies their way (getting them to send one to Soro’s was a nice touch, I’m sure he was perfectly safe)

Either way I’m sure whomever perpetrated this campaign will have a suitable scapegoat already tied to the stake, but I guarantee the investigation (and headlines) will drag on past the mid-term elections that will boost Democrats and not Republicans. And, as usual, Trump will be blamed because of his rhetoric he ‘made’ the perpetrators do this! CNN and Hillary Clinton/Obama will make this into a rally cry for Democrats to vote in 2 weeks to get rid of right wing terrorist groups in USA. Even although no-one will have been arrested/identified by the mid-terms but it will fit their narrative….coincidence???

Something about the timing and Democrats fearing not winning enough seats at the mid-terms to retake the house smells very fishy to me….perhaps I’m reading too much into it as I have a basic distrust of how low the left in America will go.

  I thought these were supposed to be explosives that were sent. At least some (and probably all) are hoax pipe bomb like devices that contain no actual explosive material.
  
  There are a lot of little mysteries about the deliveries such as the fact that they appear to be courier delivered (or at least that was the initial claim) byut they don’t appear to have been processed by a courier company. That is the stamps aren’t marked as they would be in a normal delivery.
  
  There’s a suspicion, and in some quarters a very strong feeling, that these are a deliberate PR stunt by some faction in the Democrats to raise sympathy and to give a counterweight to the almost exclusively leftist origination of violence at this election cycle.
  
  I can see the thinking behind this and agree that there’s a lot of suspicious “facts” in these deliveries. But there’s a lot of surveillance of deliveries and any genuine courier packages will have been pre-screened and will have sender details recorded. So it’s a wait and see, but that hasn’t stopped the MSM from accusing Trump and the GOP of complicity.

      Unless there’s been a further update, all of the “devices” were intercepted prior to final delivery; and my understanding (though there’s no apparent full official notification) is that these are hoax devices, that is not bombs but intended to look like they are.
      
      They may contain something that could be explosive but have no functional trigger. They also appear to be “obvious”, that is designed to be easily detected, but that may just be because that’s the material the makers had to hand.
      
      I certainly hope they find who sent these, and why. If it is a “Right Wing Nutter” that will at least break the solid lock-in that the left have on political violence so far this election season.

The article goes on to suggest other ways of avoiding the tragedy, such as barrier arms but it is only towards the end that someone has the courage to state the obvious: if you play on the tracks and get in the way of a train going about its lawful business you have only yourself to blame if you can’t get out of the way in time.

As the Government claims there is a planned transition away from an economy based on fossil fuels that largely contribute to climate change, what does the Government see as being the percentage of electric power production being used by electric powered vehicles as they encourage the public to use them in place of petrol powered vehicles?

What power usage will electric cars require, considering Genesis’s proposal to import coal for extra power generation needs at Huntly?

Or is there really no actual plan in the “planned” transition?

No more planning, I would think, than the thought and consultation that went into Ardern’s statement –
“I can give this guarantee to this House and to consumers: there will be no other regional fuel taxes while I’m Prime Minister – which at the moment feels like it might be for a while”
– so no specific fuel tax related to an exactly defined period.

    Having read the comments from people like Prince Charles, Al Gore and so forth, I think the rich want this. They want to be able to go on holiday without the riffraff being there. They deplore things like cheap flights and are delighted with the prospects that flights will become expensive as it will stop the hoi polloi going on holiday.
    
    I suspect they want to see the end of the middle class and return to the days of the aristocracy, the priesthood (re-branded as Gaia worshippers) and the 98% living on subsistence.
    
    When you have people like Al Bore and Leonardo the Crapio flying on their personal aircrafts to destinations to give speeches that people shouldn’t fly anymore, it’s hard not to come to that conclusion: “travel is for me, but not for thee”. This includes getting rid of private transport in lieu of the plague-ridden public transport abominations like rail.

  Yvette, there is no plan nor thought for the consequences of their decisions which are gestures based solely on sentiment. We are now importing coal to keep the lights on. It’s going to be much worse when the gas runs out in a decade, especially if more people start using electric vehicles (whose construction and disposal involve an enormous carbon footprint in any case). The oil and gas offshore exploration ban will increase carbon emissions and will be disastrous for the less well off as energy prices skyrocket.

    Did you see the cleanup has begun by burning the logs and forestry waste washed down into Tolaga Bay during the storm in June clogging the streets and beach.
    The logs and wood waste are being piled into a huge bonfire on the beach and set alight. The waste will take weeks to burn. Not to worry about the CO2 being released in the smoke as they have made the fire as ‘green’ friendly as possible with a large forced fan to heat the fire and reduce the smoke output, which is being monitored. However, yesterday they had to stop burning as the smoke output was too high. //

In the farrago of nonsense deployed to boost the lottery payout the victim did ask one interesting if rhetorical question: ‘Can you imagine the reaction if the races had been reversed?’ Indeed we can Gayle. The police and media would react in the way they did to the ‘Asian’ grooming gangs. They’d look the other way.

The “Caravan” is interesting, you wouldn’t know from the press reports, but the “caravan” people are not walking to the US border, they’re being transported by Truck mostly and only walking for PR shots.

So who is paying for and arranging the transport – it would be a far from insignificant cost. And who is supplying food and the means to cook; who is supplying water, and very importantly, sanitation services. One very much doubts that there are public facilities readily available or that the thousands of caravan people are just using the roadside as a toilet.

This march is organized and well funded; and well promoted through the media. Who is doing this ?

        Cha, about a quarter of the British Indian Army troops were Muslim. The Indians fought bravely in World War 2, though some joined the Japanese side during the Burma campaign.
        
        The Muslims in the British Indian Army were actively recruited by the British. The formation of the Muslim unit of the SS would have been influenced by the friendship between Hitler and the Mufti of Jerusalem. I don’t think the SS knew what to do with the Muslim unit, and I don’t think it saw any hard fighting, unlike the Baltic, Scandinavian, French, Belgian and Dutch SS units.
        
        I’m not sure what you mean about the “Muslim irregulars” who fought with the Allies in the “SE Asian peninsula.”
        
        The guerrillas in Malaya resisting the Japanese were overwhelmingly ethnic Chinese and communist, and they continued on after the war, then fighting the British.
        
        There may have been support for the British in Burma from an ethnic Muslim group, as there was from ethnic people who were mainly Christian, but I am not aware of it.

        They fought as both irregulars and in units such as the Americans’ 3200-strong Kachin Rangers. Recruiting these ethnic minorities was facilitated by their contacts with Christian missionaries.
        
        Towards the end of the war, the Americans formed four Battalions from a 3,000-man guerrilla force of Kachin, Karen, Ghurka, Shan, Chinese, and Burmese forces.

  Bewildered Morrisey, why would you say that ? I want to to imagine 7-10,000 people marching in a column with no organization to wards a destination many weeks travel away. They walk through ordinary countryside and small towns.
  
  How are they fed, a lot of food is required to keep them nourished, far more than is easily purchased locally and far more than is easily prepared. In the conditions little could be preserved and kept edible. Where do they get clean enough water ? What are the sanitation arrangements ?
  
  I have some familiarity with route marches and the organization it takes to enable relatively large numbers of people to move in this way through a country – not that dissimilar to how an army (or at least a significant military force if not quite of an army size) would march through another country that wasn’t actively hostile. Unless you forage, considerable organization is necessary to ensure feeding and water is available.
  
  Now it is apparent that it a little easier than it sounds, they aren’t marching as such but are being transported. And bugger the “hitching a ride” guff, you don’t move that number by hitching rides. It is therefore almost certainly being organized and paid for by someone.
  
  If you really think this is spontaneously happening, I have this bridge, correction, these bridges, that I think you would be interested in buying.

The Telegraph has, behind its pay wall, an obituary of Air Vice-Marshal Charles Gibbs, a New Zealander who had a long career in the RAF, and who, the newspaper says, on his return to New Zealand on retirement was an active member of the ACT Party.

And Stuff has quite a detailed obituary, but I didn’t notice any mention of any Gibbs ACT connection.

Just read a huff post article on how NZ may be the most progressive country in the world. Obviously written by a young and naive fanperson.

Anyway a disturbing revelation in the article related to the new Domestic Violence Victim Protection bill which passed on 26 July and comes into force from 1 April next year.

It appears to grant people the right to an additional 2 weeks annual leave on some fairly tenuous circumstances.

If you at any stage in your life resided (in a hostel?) with a child who was domestically abused, then for the rest of your life you can claim an additional 2 weeks leave. The bill doesn’t require you to take any steps during the leave to deal with the issue, doesn’t prevent you from claiming the leave in any 12 month period for any previously claimed incident, and doesn’t limit the amount of time that may have occurred since the thing happened.

And this isn’t like parental leave, it has to be paid for by the employer, who is therefore paying for the deeds of the abuser. You don’t have to have been abused to claim it, you don’t have to be related to or a guardian of a child who was abused (you just need to have resided with), and hell that doesn’t even need to be the primary place the kid resides.

They really missed an opportunity to do this properly and achieve some good for people who are abused. As it stands it looks like now it will be another factor that employers use to exclude potential employees (are they likely to claim the leave) and therefore contribute to the glass ceiling. What a pig’s breakfast of a bill.

  At first I thought it was that they were talking to their Friends in Taranaki Oil&Gas industry (and we all know how well that worked out!) then 2/3rds of the way through the article, we find out most of the change in price was after operational data was released. So it wasn’t Cindy being fearsome, it was the market reacting to lost market share. Talk about shoddy journalism.

Shit..I just realised… I hope that the beautiful Jacinda doesn’t think we need an inquiry into the electricity generators! 🙂 ……Everything’s fine there darling…my divi’s have been excellent….all the folk are getting a fair deal…etc..etc… 🙂
