Christmas Eve has just started here in CA. Can Kiwibloggers in NZ grant us migrant Kiwis one wish for Christmas? A description of the tastes of what you are having for Xmas dinner. And how’s the weather?

  Bloody sad down ticker, I have decided to boycott my family who have already had three early xmases as if one isn’t expensive enough and one of my ex husbands is turning up there and as no-one else much will be there to talk to., I will have more fun on my own lol.
  
  However, one has to have ham, so ham and cheese toasties it will be, a jelly made with fruit salad, the obligatory pav. and trifle, paced out and hand picked frozen blueberries.
  
  I am not so sure of this ‘good will to all men’ bit in the season’s greetings lol, I am sure that ex’s can be excluded.
  
  Anyway, one and all, we all know that the coming political year will be full of outrage, thanks Winston, but it could be worse, we could be bagging our own side. Merry Xmas everyone, salutations for the New Year can wait until closer to the time.

    Hahaha. Thanks RM for that and I was thinking the same about the cretinous downticker without a life. I’ve got free range eggs at hand to make a Pav or two to treat my American friends. And Kiwifruit and strawberries. I remember my Nan making the best trifle on Christmas Day. I must have the recipie somewhere but I think from memory it included sponge broken into chunks, Edmonds Custard, Whipped Cream and a can of Watties Fruit Salad. It was all come, all served but a relaxed buffet style affair in Waitara.

      Monique: Re the trifle recipe, my mother’s was similar…but you forgot two things: the half cup of sherry over the broken up sponge bits, and then the jelly over the sponge/sherry mix. After that has set, then it’s fruit salad and custard. Whipped cream and strawberries on top.

        I’ve just snuck into the fridge to have a nibble of the drenched-jellied sponge. It’s going to be ok.
        I was too scared to give it an entire chocolate liqueur drench, so I diluted the liqueur with orange juice, then hubby located the sherry (and some port and some other liqueurs and an unopened bottle of vodka), so I had to add a splash or three of sherry to the mix.
        
        I’m using the classic recipe DG describes above… the soaked sponge has been set in an orange jelly.
        
        For the topping, I’ll grate dark chocolate over the whipped cream (instead of strawberries).
        
        Then I remembered some of the guests at my neighbour’s place are vegetarian…. so I’ve set some sponge in a green agar jelly and I’ll assemble them a separate trifle.

        That’s it! Edmonds Cook Book maybe. I think that was the only time I ever went near alcohol and the only alcohol on Christmas Day except for wine cooler for the Aunties.
        My Nan was a real Lady. Same dishes every year and everyone gathered at her place. A diminutive Bach at the beach.

        It might be sacrilege to say but I was never a trifle fan. All that custard and jelly and sweet fruit. Ugh. So I changed the flavours to dark rum, coffee and chocolate. Yum!
        I’m suspecting Maggy’s concoction with the chocolate liqueur will have a similar result. Bravo!
        
        As the cuddly cook says, never apologise for the food you serve. Bon Appetite ?

      Have fun Cantabrians! Enjoy the good weather! I can see it’s 21deg in Queenstown where Hubby is from.
      All my extended family is in Wellington though. Last Christmas I spent there was the one after the Rugby World Cup. Really hot and spent one last perfect Summer Christmas in Karori.

  Good morning to you Monique and a Merry Christmas to you and to my fellow KBers. It’s 5am here in Auckland on Christmas morning and the weather is much improved after a very soggy Christmas Eve with campers washed out and homes flooded in Waihi Beach. Like so many Kiwis a part of of our family is overseas and we missed them at our traditional Christmas Eve family dinner but toasted them with copious drafts of good Central Otago pinot noir and recalled the Christmases when our kids were small and the cash was scarce. This morning will see a big casual brunch with the family and maybe a lonely neighbour or two.
  
  Happy Christmas one and all and a special Kiwi wish to all of our expat KBers. May 2019 smile upon you all.

  We are having a reduced numbers family Christmas, as half of us are meeting our overseas obligations. However, we shall have lunch indoors (sit down at 1-pm, give or take an hour), because it’s raining, and it will be the usual communally cooked affair – ham, turkey with all the accompaniment , new potatoes and home grown salads, and I’m told a bottle or two of NZ finest fizz will be offered.
  My own contribution of pavlova with sweetened whipped cream and topped with an assortment of fresh berries, plus a trifle laced with sherry – there’s no escaping whipped cream on Christmas Day.
  And then we shall have our Secret Santa Lucky Dip Sack – nothing to cost more than $20, and approval ratings given according to creativeness of the gift. People can swap –
  But I have to go – the food is packed, and I have a 2 hour drive –
  I hope everyone has a Happy Day, and God Bless Each and Every One.

  Used to holiday there as a youngster and went there for our honeymoon. We used to feast The local seafood ? and fish and including Scallops which would twinkle in the nets under our balcony at night.
  My two sisters are going there in Jan with their families!
  Lived there during Cyclone Bola. That was something else. Shouls of fish coming into shore for days afterwards.

Moreover. having once met Schultz at his Santa Rosa Ca. ice rink and studio, I have a special affection for his creations. Most kids and young at heart older folks love Snoopy, Charlie, Lucy, Linus et al. Schultz is sadly missed, so old fellow, a Merry Christmas to you, wherever you are.
And Merry Christmas to you DG…… but less of the cream and treble sherry makes the trifle better. 🙂

Merry Christmas everyone. Four generations of the Toby family gathering here later in the morning.

The wife and daughter spent yesterday preparing food for lunch. I contributed with my famous Alpine pork and cashew meatloaf – the first item on everyone’s list when we are sitting out the lunch menu. Happy to share the recipe if anyone is interested.

DPF: all the best to you and yours. I’m sure most of us will raise a silent toast later.

    With pleasure.
    
    12-18 fresh (ie, never been frozen) Alpine Pork sausages
    150-200 gms unsalted cashews, roughly chopped
    Juice of 1 lime
    
    Set oven to 175 degrees
    
    Peel skins off sausages. Mix sausage meat, cashews and lime juice together.
    
    Form into meatloaf, and place in roasting tray or cake/bread tin. Cover with tinfoil.
    
    Cook in oven for 25-30 minutes, or until juices run clear. Remove tinfoil cover for the last few minutes to lightly brown outer layer.
    
    Cool and refrigerate. Best eaten cold.
    
    Cut into slices just before serving.
    
    (An alternative is to roll into small meatballs, and cook uncovered.)
    
    Good luck.

Although surrounded by swollen rivers we are safe. I intend to relax over a nice whisky or two with my dear wife who enjoys a bubbly. This will be followed by glazed ham, chicken & lamb. For desert it’s the good old Pav, trifle and fruit salad with lashings of cream.

The highlight of the day will be the speech from the throne in Morrinsville. After we prostrate ourselves during the speech it will then be a ritual sticking pins in our eyes.

The Masterley family has completed the present opening frenzy, the nintendo switch has been fired up for Mr 11, Mr 13 is reading in bed, Mrs M is pottering around and I am wearing my new Ren & Stimpy shirt.
We can’t be bothered with cooking so it is off out for lunch where someone else cooks and cleans up.

The 536632456236456356 poses we’ll need to affect before it is agreed that the 53663245623645635th pose produced a 2018 photograph that managed to ‘catch the family mood beautifully’ and should be the one saved for posterity

Dud ‘Trivial Pursuit’ partners. I dunno, I really expect a better standard of General Knowledge from an 11-year-old who has no problems setting up I-Expensives (Kidding again!)

Critiques of Her Madge’s Christmas Address. ‘Isn’t she looking old these days?’. ‘Did you notice that there was no pic of Kate on the table behind her. There’s problems there, I just know!’ ‘Too many shots of (name of Royal littlie). I’d rather have seen Neve…’

Any political talk. (Oops!)

Negativity in our traditional dinner-table impromptu individual speeches from everyone (even 11-year-olds eagerly anticipating a monetary gift for setting up my I-Expensive) that include:
‘What I Most Liked About 2018’
‘What I Am Most Grateful For Right Now’
and
‘What I Want To Achieve In 2019’

All that aside, I trust Kiwibloggers everywhere have a safe, peaceful day and that the whitebait fritter platter and the Baileys bottle still have enough left for you each time you approach them!

Today I thank DPF for the best Blog in NZ. A place we can enjoy, and slag off trolls without getting banned (you know who you are) Merry Christmas to all.
No travelling for us, leaving it until mid Jan. Mangawhai, caravan and boat, can’t wait. Go easy on the food and alcohol all.

  The sad thing is that the emaciated Corporal
  really believed (his writings suggest) that Germany “wus robbed” at the Armistace.
  
  Any way, we should have sent Snoopy after him and the chicken farmer before they finished weaving their wicked ways at Wanasee.

I can remember a snoopy cartoon with him flying an old WW1 aircraft wearing a white head band with the words… ” Devine Wind ” … printed on it.
