      Interesting that. The US Navy had to ‘retire’ the name ‘Arizona’ after the Japs sank it in Pearl Harbor, hence probably how the name ‘Phoenix’ came into being. It too was sunk.

  Sir Rex Hunt was Governor of the Falkland Islands at the time. The British Labour Government was preparing to hand the Falklands over to the Argies which would have been catastrophic for the Falklands people who would have effectively become stateless and homeless. Sir Rex’s appointed task was to facilitate the handover to the Argies. After settling into the job Sir Rex became convinced that there was no way the UK should allow the Islanders to be subject to Argentinian rule and successfully persuaded the newly elected Maggie Thatcher to defend the Falklands against Argentina. All those people who spout off that the UK should have surrendered the Falklands to the Argies would have been whistling a different tune if they actually lived there.

  It described the perpetrator as “part maori”.
  
  It jumped out at me as I haven’t seen the description here for many many years, even though it could be accurate so certainly not racist.

    Every Maori is a part Maori, so in addition to “maori Samoan” we have: European Maori, Irish Maori, Scots Maori, Yugoslav Maori…I’m getting tired, there must be lots more.
    
    Perhaps interesting to try to identify which grouping prominent Maori fit. No doubt most activist Maori won’t want to admit to any association, nevertheless they all have one. Given whakapapa is so important I expect much self-identification.

        The legal definition of Aboriginal includes that of Maori not just as accepted of the Australian natives.
        But of course the difference is that most Australian Aboriginals are 100%, whereas there are no pure 100% Maori.

  I am observing high amounts of zealotry when it comes to alcohol and the enforcement of regulations. We are seeing calls for high tax rates along the lines of tobacco in an effort to target problem drinkers by controlling all drinkers.
  
  Of course what will happen is what has happened with tobacco. A rise in crime and a thriving Black Market.
  
  Eventually, if the trend continues, we will see some dodgy spirits on the black market, and there will be devastating consequences for those who consume this hooch.
  
  For what its worth, as far as booze is concerned, we should do the following.
  
  Educate as much as you can.
  
  Raise the Off License Purchase age to 21.
  
  Retain the on license age at 18, so young people are more likely to start drinking in a supervised environment.

    It would be ludicrous to raise tax on alcohol. I just hope people that share that belief with me are also willing to acknowledge that the way we tax cigarettes in=s appalling.
    
    I don’t smoke, but punishing (or, more accurately, taking advantage of to generate revenue) people for their vices is completely beyond the mandate of any reasonable government.

        Although now that it is cheaper to purchase cannabis than cigarettes, we may begin to see a shift away from those supermarket purchases into the black economy.
        
        I’m a smoker, and am presently contributing over $1000 each month in cigarette taxes – and that’s only one pack a day. I’m seriously considering switching, at least in part, to cannabis because I have seen what $1000 can buy. I have no desire to smoke cannabis, but am being pushed in that direction by the ever increasing taxes on this single product !

      Like many I used smoke but gave up 15 years ago. Price had nothing to do with it. The people who continue to smoke are the people who can least afford it. I see folk in shops buying cigarettes and some of them look half dead. If they are not quitting with cigarettes at 30 dollars they are not going to stop when they are 50 dollars. How many children are in “poverty” because of the cost of cigarettes?

        Stop/go woman smoking cigarette as she clung on to her sign. Did not look too classy.

” PEPANZ ORAL SUBMISSION TO THE ENVIRONMENT SELECT COMMITTEE
18th October 2018

Thank you to the Committee for the opportunity to make an oral submission. I’ll leave most of the detailed objections in our written submission.
It’s a privilege to speak. It is a privilege that has been denied to the many voices of affected workers. And the speed with which the law is being passed means that there is no time to reflect on what is being said.
It has been touted that this transition will take decades. This seems at odds with the decision to take just weeks to pass legislation.
In the past two days at this committee hearing I’ve heard a lot of wishful thinking, and a lot of hopes expressed as certainties.
It is time for a reality check. Time for some cold hard facts to enter the debate.
It is a fact that oil and gas supply 60% of NZ’s energy needs. Ending that use will take a lot of incredibly expensive investment plus the development of several new technologies to succeed.
It is a fact that NZ is part of a global energy and petrochemical market – just as climate change is a global problem. What we don’t produce here will simply be produced by others – usually with higher emissions, and then imported here, again with higher emissions in its transport.
It is a fact that these expensive changes will absorb resources and reduce government revenues that have other socially beneficial uses. Like health, education and housing, which is why managing the transition to a lower carbon world as pragmatically as possible is so vital.
It is a fact that other nations will not look to NZ’s example with admiration and awe.
We would all like them to, but the reality is that nations make their own decisions based on their own circumstances and own best interests. Always have done, will always do so.
Reality is that the lower carbon transition will be difficult and expensive enough, without badly thought-out policy frolics like this ban.
Time is short – in summary:
The policy process has been abysmal. Submitters and constitutional experts have said that, even some who support the intent of the ban.
Such an incredibly poor process cannot be expected to produce anything other than an incredibly poor outcome. There has been:
• no clearly articulated problem definition,
• no ‘intervention logic’ to demonstrate how the policy would achieve the stated goal of “addressing climate change,
• no options analysis,
• no analysis to show that the benefits outweigh the costs,
• no assessment of the parties to bear costs and the expected beneficiaries,
• no consideration of unintended consequences.
We reject that this Bill needed to be rushed through in the very short time-frame. No sound reason that stands up to scrutiny has been given.
We urge the Committee to ask for more time.
If you are truly proud of this decision. You will be prepared to hold it up to scrutiny.
That you attempt to rush it through, gives the impression you are not proud of what you are doing.
Proper scrutiny requires a reasonable amount of time and with just 10 days until the Committee is due to report back it is difficult to see how it will have time to adequately consider the 2283 written submissions and the 100 or so oral submissions that have been able to be heard, seek any advice from officials as well as undertake members’ other Parliamentary duties
Indeed it is hard to avoid the conclusion that the shortened select committee process was designed specifically to ensure a lack of scrutiny.
“There is a low likelihood of the Bill achieving its stated intent”
The Parliamentary website states that the “Bill aims to reduce fossil fuel use” however: this bill does not in any way address:
• this bill does not address how demand will be reduced (i.e. the reduction in the “use” of those fuels);
• this bill does not address the highest emitting of those fuels used in NZ’s energy system (coal);
• this bill does not address the contribution of NZ’s fuels to displacing higher emitting fuels here and overseas
• this bill does not address the non-energy emissions (e.g. methane from agriculture) – almost half of NZ’s emissions.
The reason the Bill does not address those issues is that the Crown Minerals Act is a resource allocation regime, not an emissions reduction regime.
The ETS and the proposed Zero Carbon Bill are designed as emissions reduction regimes and are accordingly more appropriate
“Climate change is a global issue”
We have our part to play, but we must design our policy in the global context, New Zealand is NOT a closed system.
It is the reduction of emissions here and globally that needs to be the focus and the role that NZ can play in that.
Fuels are not the same as emissions, with oil and gas being the feedstock for many other products with low or no emissions in their creation or use:
• medical equipment, fertilisers, packaging, clothing, digital devices, medical equipment, detergents and tyres are integral to modern life;
• petrochemicals are key components of a modern energy system and are found in solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, thermal insulation for buildings, and parts for electric vehicles.
Energy Security
The Bill will reduce the resilience of New Zealand’s energy supply and increase overall costs.
The RIS states that “The reduction in the availability of a reliable and flexible source of energy may have a negative impact on both energy security and affordability”
This means the policy can directly harm the 395,000 industrial, commercial and residential users of natural gas and LPG and every New Zealand household who uses electricity.
The current gas supply constraints offer a view of a future without gas in the energy system. Energy prices will increase and the cost of living for New Zealanders will increase.
It is noteworthy that Genesis Energy has recently stated that the Government’s policy introduces “significant uncertainty over gas supplies in the 2030’s and it becomes much harder to remove coal from the electricity system”.
Government sovereign
But I recognise that the Government has a right to govern. So here are our constructive ideas to improve this law:
• Talk to the people of Taranaki directly affected by this bill and give them a meaningful opportunity to engage in the discussion
• Extend the select committee report back and consultation to the more standard 6-9 months and 6 weeks respectively;
• Seek a mandate from the House, Business Committee or other relevant authority to transfer the consideration of this Bill to the Economic Development, Science and Innovation Committee, being that the Standing Orders (188) state that Crown minerals are a specific subject area of that committee or at the very least seek the opinion from that Committee in accordance with Standing Orders (293)
• Prior to progressing the Bill, ask the Interim Climate Change Committee and the Electricity Authority to report on the role of the oil and gas sector in a lower emissions environment.
This would bring an assurance that the decision is made with full knowledge – not on a whim. Again if you believe in your policy – put it up for scrutiny.
Give the oil and gas sector the opportunity to demonstrate the steps it is taking to lower emissions and provide assistance for it to do so;
I’ll leave a copy of our soon to be released report on this – “The future of oil and gas in a lower carbon world” – with the clerk for you to consider in your deliberations.
Concluding remarks
Nearly every submitter on this Bill, including our industry, strongly agrees with the need to reduce net emissions and the impacts of those on a changing climate. That is not in dispute.
The problem is this Bill is the wrong tool. It will have major economic and social costs on New Zealanders and more than likely increase global net emissions.
As a society we don’t have unlimited resources to tackle the changing climate. We have to carefully choose the best policy options that will deliver the greatest benefits at least cost. This bill clearly does not meet that”

  Very good submission but I would say that the problem is that this government views oil and gas as the enemy and puts environmental concerns and thoughts about global warming above every other consideration.
  
  The good people of Taranaki are under attack by this government which is doing everything they can to drive them into recession by stopping oil and gas exploration and also their negative view of the dairy industry.
  
  But that’s what you get when you have a government that views climate change as far more important than jobs for ordinary New Zealand workers.
  
  Over in the United States they have opened up the energy sector and have in a very short time become the leading producer of petroleum in the world. The United States economy is booming. There were over 300,000 new jobs created in December alone.
  
  Over here this government is cracking down on oil and gas, is against coal, is increasing regulations, increase in government spending and looking for ways to increase taxation. All of these things will hurt economic growth.
  
  Unfortunately I think these things cannot be solved until the next election when this government should summarily be ejected from office.

Yesterday in a fiery exchange presidential spokesperson Kelly Anne Conway tore into CNN “reporter” Jim Acosta. She called him a smart arse to his face! I love it when Trump and his administration call out the press. The news media for years and years have got away with their leftist propaganda. Trump and his associates are the only ones who stand up to the out-of-control press. If we only had politicians here on the right who would do the same!
Some people say this is unpresidential. Well George Bush 43 never retaliated to the press, was always a perfect gentleman with them and what did he get? He was vilified every day and he never hit back. That cost him a lot in his public standing and his presidency. And it never helped because the press just piled on more and more and more. The only time they will ever say something decent about him will be at his funeral.
So I am pleased that Trump is hitting back and his associates are hitting back. We need centre-right politicians here to do the same. But that will take courage. Will our centre-right politicians have it? We can only hope and pray that they will. Because right now we need centre-right voices that will speak with courage and conviction against this coalition which is taking us in a very very wrong direction.

Given the efforts to stamp out tobacco products, and that cannabis smoke has many of the same carcinogenic substances as tobacco, and often more of them, and that people supposedly inhale cannabis more deeply, hold smoke in longer, and generally smoke a joint to the end, where residual tar is concentrated – when will Government agencies commence an educational programme on both recreational and medicinal cannabis, the considerable differences between the two, the side-effects of both, including collateral health issues, and driving and other occupational implications, and how will they put all this in one simple reeferendum question, that will fuck the nation up less than the vote on MMP?

  I know of a young ”recreational” cannabis user who thinks it’s better not to work – despite being offered jobs – so he can stay at a home to play video games day and night. He gets whacked on weed given to him by his ”mates”and ignores the kids and his wife works 12-14 hours a day in miserable jobs to put food on the table. She won’t leave, not because she loves him, but to try, somehow, to protect the kids.

    Yes one of my own family members smoked marijuana. I would say that it had a big effect on his drive and ambition. Unfortunately he lost his job as a cook and was unemployed for many years before his death.
    
    Marijuana appears to harm short-term memory, dampened down drive and ambition, often eads to reduced mental health including neuroses and schizophrenia. Mike King talks about this in his talks to youth.
    
    Why we would allow another other intoxicant to be legal in our nation doesn’t make a lot of sense to me?

    ie another 1.4% tax

I posted this in the GD late yesterday, but am not sure how long it took to appear, so apologies in advance for repeating myself.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has hired a security firm to increase staff skills in using fake social media profiles to gather intelligence.

Among the modules offered are harvesting information from social networks, creating back-stories for false online personae and creating dossiers on people and groups.

When informed of the training by the Herald, Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones said senior ministers would be briefed on the issue when they returned to work at the end of the month.

“Kiwis should be able to go about their daily business without the fear of bureaucrats peering into their social media,” he said.

17 December 2017 – that’s a couple of months AFTER the Labour-led government took over; you know, the one that was going to be “the most open and transparent government ever”. Yes, Labour was going to teach public servants to set up fake socmed profiles to spy on other New Zealanders.

Serious questions need to be asked of the government over this. Unfortunately, as Jones notes, they’re all on holiday until the end of this month, by which time he hopes the issue will have died a natural death. It’s up to us, the humble taxpayers, to ensure that this doesn’t, and that this duplicitous behaviour by a governmment department has a bright light shone on it.

  While not a user of “Social Media” I have the understanding that the whole idea of this thing is to put everything you do online so that those with no life at all can get pleasure (?) by perusing it.
  
  The simple fact that it is “Social Media” means it is open to all, which includes bureaucrats.
  
  Surely if people want to keep something private or simply quiet the last thing they would do was to put it online.

        This is no more, in comparative terms, than your local CCTV camera.

    Promising open, transparent, kindness would mean that any policy contrary to that would/should be brought to the attention of the minister in charge. If not, the the SSC should be involved.
    
    Perhaps they did and the “minister” was too busy counting baubles to read the brief or listen at the briefing.

For all my life I have gone to the dentist on a regular basis (usually 6 monthly, latterly annually). It is only within the last 5 years that I have not needed some fillings/crowns/teeth removed… possibly because there is bugga all natural tooth left exposed above my (receding) gums.

The hubby, in contrast, has been to the Dentist once in our 40 years of marriage….. 35 years ago.
Today he is in pain with toothache…Appointment at noon…
I expect to get a blow-by-blow account of the oral assault he endured (as a brave wee man) all afternoon/evening.

I had to be on the motorway at around 7am yesterday (a while since I’ve driven on it that early) and couldn’t get over the amount of trucks on the road. They also seemed to totally ignore the traffic-control on ramp lights and just drove straight through the red lights. I know the old ad “trucks bring good stuff” but they can also be a PITA.

A full height two thousand mile long wall with accompanying access road would be wildly expensive. That $5.7bln would hardly cover the drawings.

  The actions of Chuck and Nancy are enlightening are they not?
  
  It can be summarised as being: ‘America be damned; we hate the guy that much that we will willingly, deliberately, sacrifice our nation to destroy him’!
  
  All played out on national TV to a wondering audience. Unintentionally, Chuck and Nancy have reveiled their true colours (not helped by throw-away lines about the morality or otherwise of wall ownership), a situation that has not helped their case.
  
  The fact that the President has also made attempts to ‘accommodate’ their unreasonable demands only serves to emphasise the point. Two people (and ONLY two people) are literally holding a nation to ransom!
  
  Whatever the Dem’s reaction, the President will not however ‘do nothing’. He is one those rare creations in the Twentyfirst century; a fervent nationalist, who is in a position to literally put money where his mouth is and is beholden to no-one. In precis’ his mantra is ‘If it is good enough for America it’s good enough for me’, and he will literally do ANYTHING to achieve that end. People will deride him, but they will never stop him.
  
  It’s also worth recalling that he (Mr Trump) has the backing of 63 million people and very, very rarely loses at anything he tries; something that his detractors / enemies forget at their peril.
  
  He is first and foremost a ‘Businessman’, and makes his decisions on that basis. America is the better for that fact.
  
  It has been suggested that the necessary monies be given to the Border Patrol as they would best know how to use it, and where, and this may perhaps be the ‘compromise’ that you mention. If the Dems decline to take the opportunity (as seems to be the case) then a ‘State of Emergency’ becomes a viable option and the use of the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Seebees will certainly get things underway.
  
  The wall WILL be built, and it won’t be for want of trying on the President’s part…

      I speak as someone who has studied at the complete files. These are available to the judges but I believe no material was requested beyond the written submissions and supplementary material from Steve Bustin. A vital part of the case was won by the defence, and this works its way to the supreme court.
      I think you may divine an issue here.
      Rest assured KS, I do have another life like all of us, but this case is a permanent stain on New Zealand, and nothing will prevent the complete story of the investigation being presented. It is far worse than Arthur Thomas or Teina Pora.

      Last year another lady had to accept in a nearby supermarket car park, that those “others” had greater needs as they loaded her shopping bags into their car, and then off.
      
      The worst part I also see is the little nests that are quietly being created in some towns.
      However I see, hear enough, to know of the intimidation, strong-arm factors and all done with a smile, hand-signal, or a bark.
      
      The problem with the journalists is the childish logic of feelings, that they have installed with the “trained journalist” media degree.
      “there, there, Mummy will kiss it better” and so they believe, and the feelings now feel great.
      So they never grow up in universities.
      
      Centralization of police, health and safety, lack of numbers, serve but not protect, means that often one can be a number of hours away from the police.

I see the blog guardian Pete George is doing a victory lap because yesterday (for the first time ever since I started commenting at Kiwiblog in 2005) DPF deleted part of my comment. Pete George has said that I’m lying several times. That’s a false accusation. So I’m going to correct the record.

1. DPF deleted part of the text – because Pete George complained.
2. I have a private email from DPF (that I won’t quote out of respect for DPF). In general terms, though, DPF and I are both aligned in thinking that Pete George needs to lighten up.
3. The deleted text was, and was intended to be, satire. Saying “In a post-election interview, Pete George said to an empty room that the election result was “disappointing”” isn’t a personal attack. It’s clearly satire. And saying “In his post-election interview, Pete George told the empty room that after “intense self-reflection” he’d appointed himself as a blog guardian and would work “tirelessly and selflessly” to make all blogs a better place for everyone” isn’t a personal attack. It’s clearly satire.
4. Pete George has yet to show a statement where I “lied” about him.
5. All of the facts in my comment were substantiated with links. The rest of the comment was satire. Perhaps next time (for Pete George’s benefit) I’ll put around it. Or perhaps I won’t. I really don’t care what Pete George thinks.

      I think I do fairly well on this. It’s not possible feasible to pre-check every comment, and it’s not good practice to ban people who you think could abuse some time in the future. That certainly doesn’t happen here, nor on other blogs like The Standard.
      
      There are a lot more abusers here who seem to not give a toss for the rules going by the Strikes list.
      
      And while in respect your choice to stop commenting after 3 strikes at Your NZ, you are still commenting here – are you up to 1 or 2 strikes? Or do you cut DPF more slack?

  If you are referring to a scientist facing the death penalty for conducting work that has not intentionally harmed/killed anyone… then, of course, I am appalled.
  
  I have a bias toward scientists/researchers that attempt to save the life of individuals carrying mutant genes or are being harmed by chemicals/viruses/antibodies from the parent.
  
  I’m a Rh baby – I would have died if I hadn’t received full blood transfusion at birth.
  Not sure how common that practice was in W(h)anganui 65 years ago.
  
  I don’t see much wrong with CRISPR technology and would happily munch CRISPR apples and plant CRISPR trees.
  
  I imagine if I hadn’t spat out healthy babies as easily as I did, I would have tried ANY (pain-free) technology available.

      I’m all in favour of scientists working within established protocols and having open and transparent methodologies.
      
      It seems Professor He has jumped the gun.
      
      If I read things correctly, he has performed a genetic modification that was not essential for the survival of the embryos (i.e. he has tried to confer resistance to a possible infection with Aids).
      
      In that case he and his research team need their work to be scrutinised/monitored…
      
      2. CRISPR – modification of mutant human embryos seems a real possibility in the very near future.. I’m not opposed to the correction of genetic problems at embryonic levels..

    My grandfather was horrified when he was told of my full blood transfusion. He thought I might have been given Maori blood and end up as a darkie.
    
    My younger brother had to have a full transfusion while still in the womb at National womans in Auckland. Apart from being a dipstick, I suppose he turned out ok.

Vegans blow up over Aussie cafe’s refusal to serve ‘highly-processed’ soy milk

Angry vegans have let rip at an Australian cafe on social media because it refuses to serve soy milk for health reasons.

Healthy food specialists Rough & Bare — which has cafes at Mona Vale in northern Sydney and St Leonards on the city’s north shore — stoked one plant-lover’s fury when she read the establishment’s menu.

“We choose not to serve soy milk and people often ask why,” the menu reads. It then lists a number of reasons for the omission. “Soy is a very highly processed product,” the cafe’s owners claim. “It contains phytates which bind minerals like zinc, calcium, iron and magnesium making them unavailable to you. “Isoflavones in soy is plant based oestrogen and this mimics the body’s actual oestrogen levels.”

The menu then goes on to describe how the establishment offers “better” alternatives such as coconut and almond milk — which it claims are “free from any preservatives or additives”.

I thought that the way things work is a retailer offers something and people choose whether to buy or not. But, no, the vegan community vents on social media. Instead of just choosing to eat eleswhere, they want to trash the cafe’s reputation and take it down. How charming.

Kiwiblog doesn’t have a comment count anymore, but from memory, Mikenmild was ahead of the pack (some 40,000 comments), followed closely by Stephieboy.         The discussion the other day about the size of airline staff was pretty disgusting, but par for the Kiwiblog course. But Nostradamus is probably not the most blatant hypocrite here. Lots of commenters pretend to be outrage by comments about them, or about topics or personages they hold dear, but never once protest when the ‘other side’ (however defined) is similarly abused.

Last week I commented on Organise Aotearoa’s illegal occupation of the Brazilian embassy in Wellington. Here’s a follow-up media release from them:

The New Zealand-based socialist organisation, Organise Aotearoa (OA), has gone viral and drawn the ire of the Brazilian far-right, following its occupation of the Brazilian Embassy in Wellington yesterday in a protest against its new far-right, fascist President.

Thousands of homophobic insults, death threats, and rape threats have been sent to OA’s supporters and members by supporters of the new Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who’s government came into power this week.

I doubt they’ve received one – let alone “[t]housands”. And how would people in Brazil know who the Organise Aotearoa supporters and members are, given that the only person quoted is Kat Buissink?

I read a migrant is one who moves within a country to find work whereas an immigrant is one who moves from one country to another to find work etc
the source was not impeccable or impeachable. – so Heralds heading is wrong ?

  An ‘immigrant’ is someone who has moved from another country.
  An ’emigrant’ is someone who has moved to another country.
  A ‘wall’ was something Mexico was supposed to be paying for, although someone now wants it to be funded by US taxpayers now that the Trump party has lost control of the legislature that would need to appropriate such funds.

Diplomatic missions warned before suspicious packages found in Melbourne consulates, DFAT says

All diplomatic missions in Australia were warned to be on the lookout for suspicious packages before envelopes appearing to contain asbestos were found at consulates in Melbourne, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) says. The US, Pakistani, New Zealand and Swiss consulates confirmed they received the suspicious packages on Wednesday. Emergency services workers were also seen at the Greek, French, Italian, Indian, Spanish and South Korean consulates.

DFAT said three similar incidents recently occurred in Sydney and Canberra, and the ABC understands that the Argentinian consulate in Sydney was sent three bags containing asbestos and fibreglass on Monday.

There’s no obvious connection between those countries, as far as I can see, so I wonder what the motive is for targeting their Australian-based consulates.
