“KiwiBuild has become Housing Minister Phil Twyford’s tar baby”

And Kiwibuild is a ‘bewildered beast’. So says Bryce Wilkinson in his new research note on housing affordability from the NZ Initiative published yesterday. (It is on their website.)

Next question. Will Ms Ardern’s upcoming Cabinet reshuffle extricate Mr Twyford from the clutches of his very own tar baby. Or will his predicament continue to be a source of much amusement to those of us in the industry (and not in a good way).

    Why bother – today Tauranga, the housing capital of New Zealand ??, has on Trade Me 333 houses for sale at under $550,000.
    Many are brand new.
    There is enough approved house sections in Tauranga to build 5,000 new houses.

      The affordability calc used is median house price to median household income. The latter will be skewed in Tauranga because of the higher than usual proportion of the retired. Most of whom own their own homes anyway.

  We may all down tick Hugh, but Hugh and his friend have helped put the spotlight on the failures that are Phil Twitford and his housing policy.
  
  After yesterday’s post poor efforts by Chippie, Twitford was on Red Radio giving us gems like the target of 1000 KiwiBuild homes by July is dropped and that he can’t reconcile 267 signed up buyers for SlimBuild versus 46,000 people clicking the website.
  
  The gem was him trying to explain that we really do have a housing crisis and that it it is not manufactured.
  
  In summary it would have been best had he avoided going on Red Radio this morning. Because Espiner helped prove that Twyford really lives down to being called Twitford.

  Twyford’s interview with Hosking on Newstalk ZB this morning (just after 7am) was a complete and utter train-wreck. Hosking went for the jugular early on, and wouldn’t take any of Twyford’s bluff and bluster.
  
  If Jacinda Ardern wants to save Kiwibuild, she needs to reallocate the portfolio immediately, as it will never succeed with Twyford at the helm. Then again, who could she give the “bewildered beast: to?

    It is Twyford’s propensity to speak pompously and condescendingly which really irritates me! His tones really are a veneer to cover his incompetence and the futility that is Kiwibuild. For Twyford to say “it was never going to be easy” is absurd given Labour spouted the ease with which they were out to solve the alleged “housing crisis” yet now….different and sad stories abound.

      Let’s not forget that Labour’s original plan was to build 10,000 houses a year for ten years. Then that got pared back to 1000 by July this year, and 5000 more by July 2020.
      
      He’s clearly not going to hit this year’s target, and almost certainly will miss out on next year as well. That means we will head into the 2020 election with, to used Twyford’s own words “a generation locked out of the housing market”.

    I don’t think many will be fooled. We all know that those happy wedding photos can hide a lot of family discontent.

    Ardern will have no idea of what’s happening back in NZ, until she gets home and turns on the tv, and by then today’s events will have become last week’s news as far as the MSM are concerned.

  Do not forget Gore was one of the first foreigners to ring up Ardern when she was made PM. Roped her in “nice and early”.
  About 6 months ago I said to a friend that I thought NZ was about 10+years behind the rest of the world in this climate debate debacle. By that I meant other countries have gone down the political road on it and are now realising it is a sham and are quietly moving away from it (eg. Germany has been building new coal fired power stations in recent years –their transition failed. Japan is also doing the same etc.)
  This year could prove me right or wrong, with regard NZ.

Hollywood has outdone itself with the Virtue Signalling-Black Panther and Black Klansman both nominated for Academy Award Best Picture.

  Black Panther was a great movie which I enjoyed immensely, but in no way is it worthy of a best picture nomination.
  
  I have not seen Black Klansman, so cannot pass judgement.
  
  That being said, I watched and enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody, and Rami Malek was brilliant, but Best pic at Golden Globes was a bit of a stretch.

    I have seen all the Marvel movies and think the quality has been plummeting since they went all Virtue Signalling and Political.
    Remember way back when the first Iron Man movie had a Black Sabbath/AC/DC soundtrack and was 100% pure action and entertainment? (And Tony Stark was a mad rooter?)
    Compare that to the utter PC crap the franchise is spewing out now…

  Been hijacked Longknives by #metoo, radical feminists and the virtue signalling left. And not just the Oscars, basically ANY award ceremony. Look at NZ sports awards, for years now we have separate Maori sportsperson of the year and Maori team of the year (even although these same Maori winners are also in the ‘regular’ award picks) it’s basically the left infiltrating every day aspects of life and if anything doesn’t seem ‘fair’ it’s lambasted in social media, the Oscars had it’s lowest viewing figures last year, I have no doubt they will slide year after year as movies/actors/directors are given Oscars for bad acting, bad movies but the recipient is black/gay/female etc etc.

  There is no intention that the traditional coal fired units be a permanent part of NZ’s power generation ‘base’. The intention is to use them only if there is shortfall with other generation – less water or wind than average. Genesis was going to scrap them – they were no longer needed to meet Genesis’s needs. It was Meridian who needed some contingency generation and it was more economic to retain the Huntly machines for this purpose than for Meridian to provide contingency generation (most provably low capital cost high running cost gas turbine).
  The situation is attracting attention as they are actually needed at the moment because of low inflows. Otherwise they would be sitting idle but un-noticed.

    The problem with energy needs is dynamic and immediate Also electricity has to be produced to demand. It’s not like water in a continuous stream from the generator but is pulsing at 50 cycles a second. That’s the critical bit which the devices using it expect. The demand and the instantaneous supply have to be tightly matched to keep that AC frequency constant within narrow limits. Backup capacity in big chunks is tough to manage.

  It is partially factored into dividends already. After being previously screwed by the Electricity Authority when offering power to the market at a very high price during a planned transmission line shutdown south of Huntly, Genesis announced plans to scrap the remaining two machines since they were uneconomic to keep if they were going to be screwed by the Electricity Authority again. So Meridian and the Electricity Authority were forced to do a deal with Genesis paying Genesis to keep the machines available for the market. Genesis played a cool game with this.

  It’s one thing to have a sensible policy around reform, for example age limits, impaired driving, etc. It’s another to just say “you can now use marijuana as and when you like”. We’re still in the stage of Labour not knowing what to do and quite rightly, if the referendum came up tomorrow sensible people would vote against it. Not because they don’t want to push ahead, but because pushing ahead without a sensible framework in place is foolish.
  
  And Bennet is rightly pointing out the government policy on this is confused as they’re trying to be both smoke-free, low taxes on alcohol and legalising marijuana at the same time.
  
  All three those things should be treated the same.

    On Twitter he described Bridges and Bennett’s attitude as “petty partisan”. I disagree; the referendum will be an individual conscience vite, and I would expect every MP to vote with the conscience, not blindly follow the party line. If you want “petty partisan”, look at the way that the government rammed through its decriminalisation by stealth medicinal cannabis legislation, whilst voting down all amendments put forward by Dr Shane Reti who had spent the best part of a year researching the issue, and had come up with an alternative Bill that was far superior to the legislation in front of the Parliament.

    The referendum isn’t coming up tomorrow. It’s towards the end of next year.
    In my opinion legislation should be prepared beforehand so that the voters know exactly what they’re letting themselves in for.
    Two recent examples show how to run or not run a referendum.
    In the case of the flag when we were asked did we want a new one we knew what it would be.
    In the case of Brexit the voters didn’t and now that the campaigning is shown to have been vastly different to the reality it’s too late. As with our flag they should have had a final vote after the house had agreed on the withdrawal agreement.
    Personally I don’t think we need a referendum at all. The house can decide. Then if they fuck it up they can make major changes themselves without another referendum.
    Public polling would suggest that legal marijuana is coming, but a point of contention is going to be age.
    So if the referendum says 18 and it soon becomes obvious it should have been higher, does Parliament have the right to overule the people?

It’s getting worse year by year, and we can’t effectively test for it at check points as we can for alcohol and so can’t effectively police it.     Yes, this is what happened during the GFC where financing for developers, and buyers, dried up even though interest rates were very low. So not only the usual new housing stock were massively reduced but it also created pent up demand. Especially when the NZ economy recovered from the GFC very well with many returning Kiwis and also new immigrants arriving into the country.
    
    IMO, the GFC and the consequence of ineffective monetary policies such as quantitative easing are the main contributors the “housing crisis” we see now.

      But does the MSM want to acknowledge that the ‘majority’ opinion is wrong? No – as demonstrated by STUFF’s comment policy on its recent ‘opinion’ pieces, and by the total absence of ANY reporting of these alternate views by qualified professionals.
      What is even more terrifying is the silence of the MSM around the financial fraud being imposed on us all by the climate change fraternity. I have seen elsewhere a story about the origin of the UN climate forum and the influence of the Club of Rome from the 1960s, where the clearly stated intent was to work towards global domination – for which funding was needed. How to get that funding? Make populations – ie, governments – believe that this manufactured crisis can only be addressed by poring billions of dollars into the UN’s coffers. Ask yourselves, what do we in NZ get from our contribution to global climate funds? As far as I can ascertain, the answer is absolutely nothing.

I’d like to address a line of argument used on this blog by the likes of Stephieboy, Morrissey et. al whenever it comes to discussions of racial differences. We have seen a bit of it recently with their attacks on James Watson and it is along the lines of:

“I know a Black person (usually Neil Degrasse Tyson) who is incredibly smart so your racist nonsense is wrong”.

Yesterday it was the turn of Classic Liberal when he said:

“I know people of various races that are totally into Western culture and in fact support it better than many Caucasians I know.”

This muddying of the waters by these disingenuous folk is a emotional argument but does not stand up to any proper analysis. Differences between the races only truly reveal themselves at the macro level in the differences in the averages between groups.

They seem to think that the existence of one cultured and intelligent black person disproves James Watson’s point but they are wrong.

Outliers do not disprove averages, they are already included within them. The fact that some people are on the right hand side of the bell curve does not disprove the existence of the bell curve. The bell curve could not be accurate without them. Similarly, there are many low IQ or badly socialised whites, but these are already included within the averages. They do not disprove them.

Everything always regresses to the mean. Import enough of the 3rd world and eventually you will become the 3rd world.

  Example NZ’s energy situation, we are not 100% self sufficient in energy, but she puts in place steps that will slow down investment, that while not having immediate effect, there will be fall out in the near term. Meanwhile 2 mums Shaw and others are all banging on about the use of electric cars and other modes requiring electricity, but nothing has been done to guarantee future supply.

I see that TV3 have reopened the Lee-Ross affair with a written three page apology for the attempted phuck up he made last year.
I am sure that his very special friend Tova O’Brien remains up to her armpits in this again.
I would not more trust either of them than fly to the moon.
His sort of apology is insincere in an attempt to try and let people know that he is no longer sick and is really a nice guy.

From what I hear, and Tova will have, that if this goes forward and prosecution takes place it could well backfire seriously as others come forward to his connivance, suggested blackmail, and hit him in the face.
So he, and Tova, are still going to try and get Simon despite the hypocrisy of his statement.
Sad desperate ???man – seems he should still be under long term treatment in his best interest.

Heard the ‘Comical’ Chic Comrade Ardern ranting on about the myth of Climate Change. She knows alot about myths. Like how she got selected to be NZs PM by the renegade Peters.
A few easily checked facts on the Climate Change myth. Like how about the massive Hurricane that struck Galveston in 1900. Circa Ten Thousand people died. Another event of temperature and still a record in Australia. In 1960 a temperature of 50 degrees celcius was recorded.Just a couple of facts conveniently completely ignored. Reason dosen’t comply with the myth of Climate Change.
Yet over in Europe we have a small town twerp Ardern telling lies about the myth. Thanks to Peters selection of her as NZs PM. The same lies are a daily occurence by her when she struts the country of NZ big noting and making out How Great she is. Yet is reality just like the myth of Climate Change a joke.

You have the Show Pony on Brexit and Climate change, Andrew Little trying to make out NZ is a third world Country that treat Woman badly and Justice System is broken with other minor discriminations happening, then we have Pike River and the recovery that our Police have decided not to participate in until it is pronounced as safe when other from mines safety group will enter this week. So it seems with the Kiwibuild problem also hitting the news that these story’s have been orchestrated by Labour and the coalition to hide or take the air out of something major happening in NZ Politics.

…. The first incident occurred at the firm’s offices during its Friday night drinks, the committee’s decision reads. The drunk partner touched the leg a female solicitor near him and told her: “You are very attractive.” Upset, the female lawyer left but wanted the firm’s partners to be made aware of the incident while not wishing to lay a formal complaint.
Senior lawyers at the firm, including the female solicitor’s supervising partner, an employment partner, and the managing partner, then talked with the man about his behaviour. He didn’t deny his actions but said he had no recollection of them, understood by the partners to mean he had suffered an alcohol-induced blackout, the decision reads. The offending partner was rebuked by the firm and warned against any further inappropriate behaviour. He was also told to stay away from staff drinks in the near future.
But the partner’s harassment reoccurred – this time at the firm’s end-of-year party. On this occasion, the man directed his unwanted attention towards a female employee of the firm, who was not a lawyer. He approached the woman on the dance floor and pinched her bottom, leaving a bruise, the decision reads. The partner was told to stop but he pinched her bottom again later in the evening.
After the bus ride back from the function venue, he also propositioned the employee, asking her, “Are you coming with me?” The partner, the decision reads, was “visibly intoxicated” during the events, slurring his speech and walking unsteadily.
During the course of the same evening he also grabbed the woman’s wrist and forcibly squeezed her hand against his groin. He told her: “This is for you.” She immediately withdrew her hand, while another male colleague intervened to remove the drunk partner, the decision reads.
The second incident was reported by the female employee on the following Monday before the rogue partner met with the firm’s other partners as part of an internal disciplinary process.
Again, he did not deny the events but said he had no memory of them. ….

Police investigate incident after Young Nats event

Police are investigating an incident following a Young Nationals event in central Auckland last week in which a teenage woman reported inappropriate touching and behaviour by a male Young Nats member.
The incident occurred after the group’s Christmas drinks at the Brew on Quay bar last Tuesday. At least two MPs attended the event.
It is understood the woman, aged 17, and some friends went to the young man’s apartment near the bar as they were moving to another karaoke venue. They say he had told them he was a wealthy political party donor and there were drinks at his place.

The woman was taken to a room where he allegedly grabbed her face, tried to kiss her and keep her from her friends, at one stage pulling her away from them by her wrists. When she got out of the room and left the flat she was pursued across a road and to a fast food outlet’s toilet area as the man allegedly continued to try to grope her.
She reported the matter to police, who involved detectives who took a statement from her over one and a half hours – and then took her to tell her parents what had happened.

  Is it possible that the situation has been dealt with appropriately by all concerned, and that they consider it a private matter.
  The young woman has possibly learnt to be more selective in choosing her social intimates, and the young man has possibly learnt that his sexual advances may not be acceptable to just any casual female acquaintance.
  Using this case as some sort of defence against the Labour youth camp allegations doesn’t hold water – the camp was held under the jurisdiction of a group that assumed responsibility for the well-being/safety of minors.

Pike River re-entry: Police won’t be among first inside mine after risk assessment raised safety concerns

Pike River widow Anna Osborne said on Tuesday she understood police would go in eventually, but not until it was made safe. A police spokesman said discussions with the agencies were “ongoing”

Andrew Little, Minister in charge for Pike River Re-Entry, needs to explain how the investment the tax-paying public has, and their trust in a genuine investigation will indeed not be compromised, considering the substantial conflict of interests some of those involved do have.

Unless there is a police presence right from the moment of re-entry, many could see the entire inquiry aspect, to determine the tragedy’s causes, as a mockery.

It is widely accepted that this pattern is linked to the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), a natural reoccurring cycle of temperature changes in the sea surface temperatures.
    
    A database of global hurricanes is kept, with data going back to 1970. This shows an increase in the number of major hurricanes and their accumulated energy between 1970 and 1993. This is associated with the AMO cycle too. Since 1993, there has been a decline in the frequency of all hurricanes, major hurricanes and accumulated energy.
    
    In summary, there is little evidence that global warming has resulted in more hurricanes, or more intense ones in recent years. On the contrary, available evidence confirms that hurricane and major hurricane frequency has been similar in many prior periods.

David Attenborough tells Davos: ‘The Garden of Eden is no more’

Human activity has created a new era yet climate change can be stopped, says naturalist

“ Sir David Attenborough has warned that “the Garden of Eden is no more”, as he urged political and business leaders from around the world to make a renewed push to tackle climate change before the damage is irreparable.

Speaking at the start of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, the 92-year-old naturalist and broadcaster warned that human activity has taken the world into a new era, threatening to undermine civilisation.

“I am quite literally from another age,” Attenborough told an audience of business leaders, politicians and other delegates. “I was born during the Holocene – the 12,000 [year] period of climatic stability that allowed humans to settle, farm, and create civilisations.” That led to trade in ideas and goods, and made us the “globally connected species we are today”.

That stability allowed businesses to grow, nations to co-operate and people to share ideas, Attenborough explained, before warning sombrely: “In the space of my lifetime, all that has changed.

“The Holocene has ended. The Garden of Eden is no more. We have changed the world so much that scientists say we are in a new geological age: the Anthropocene, the age of humans,” he declared.
In a stark warning to the world leaders and business chiefs flocking to the WEF this week, Attenborough warned that the only conditions that humans have known are changing fast.

“We need to move beyond guilt or blame, and get on with the practical tasks at hand.”….”

If Global warming is really that close then pussy footing around with CO2 reduction by 1% and tax credits wont cut it.

A dramatic and immediate cut in something would be needed.

Starting with all the cloaf fired power statsion in India and Cghina.

Then an immediate introduction of a one child per woman policy to greatly reduce the world’s population from a projected 11 billion by 2050 to say 4 or 5 billion.

Littles ultimate goal.

Watched the TV clip about Pike mine last night and have been left wondering whats going on here.
Is the goal to reopen the mine for production?
Is it to prove that the mine was not dangerous as he said way back in those days when he was collecting union fees?

They appear to be drilling holes into the mine in a way the wasn’t allowed previously. Are the Greens complicit in this backdoor operation.

Your favourite TV presenter was there enthusing about all this, telling us about the miles of pipe being flown in by helicopter and so on.

The people on the ground were enthusing over how the mine had got down to almost no methane. (in a coal mine?.)

The police have determined that they will not be entering the mine as it is. Either a wise decision or Labour telling them not to bother. (one never knows these days of political police).

how long before we see an open cut operation suggested?

This is the WEST COAST. They need help with work.

Given the Jim Bolger was without doubt the worst minister of Labour we have ever had the national Party need to up their act very quickly.

The working group on fair pay agreements, headed by former National Prime Minister Jim Bolger has delivered its report to Workplace Relations Minister Iain Lees-Galloway.

National Awards are foremost in the concerns with that know liar Ardern saying there will be only one or two negotiated in this term.

Back to the future for NZ.

  Just an associate, and no actual spokesman.

Now we have Smith coming out and wanting to stop foreign donations. I guess that hoirse has long gone.

One of the few things I agreed with Findlayson, even if his effort ,like Smiths, was bit belated.
