The NZ Herald and Newshub have named Jami-Lee Ross’ mistress MP.

It’s been three months since this was breaking news. Why have they chosen to do this now? They steadfastly refused to name her at the time, even bleeping out Ross naming her.

The purported reason is that the infamous “you deserve to die” text message is being investigated by police. That doesn’t make much sense.

  Because Jami said he had complained to the cops presumably about the death wish.
  Presumably s179(2) of the Crimes Act seems to be in play here:
  “A person commits an offence who incites, counsels, or procures another
  person to commit suicide, even if that other person does not commit or
  attempt to commit suicide in consequence of that conduct.” (maximum penalty three years).
  So the issue is – is ‘wishing someone was dead’ amount to inciting or procuring suicide. It seems a long stretch but the Police will probably gather the facts and pass the file to Crown Law.
  I wonder if any media person bothered to ascertain which law was supposed to apply. Quoting the relevant enactment would have help readers to assess the situation better, but then would spoil a good story. Jami / media indicated a three year jail term and this is the only suicide related one with three years – the other ones have seven or more years jail.

    No peterwn – Ross denies having complained to the police, and it is being reported today that there was an anonymous call to Crimestoppers.
    
    I have no doubt whatsoever that some shadowy figure in the background is pulling Ross’ strings, with a bigger agenda at play. I have strong suspicions as to the identity of that person, but will keep those to myself. Whatever, no one seems to have thought of the likely effect this will have on Ms Dowie’s children and family, who have no skin in the game.
    
    PS – I look forward to MP’s such as Marama Davidson, Golriz Ghahraman and Jan Logie coming to Ms Dowie’s defence #MeToo

    Bottom line, JLR:

I realise people have affairs, but it’s not very classy and puts her in the same boat as lechers like Mallard.   Poor woman. The text was sent at 1.30am approx. You can imagine what led up to it, a huge emotional fight between former lovers who now loath each other. Was JLR thinking the same thing about her at the time? For JLR to blame this cry of anguish as a death threat and then months later blame it for his erratic behaviour is FAR fetched.   Only the Police know who contacted them though.

      S179(2) of the Crimes Act makes it illegal to urge someone to suicide. As I earlier indicated it is pushing it to suggest that a wish someone was dead (via a digital communication) infringes S179(2). There would seem to be a similar problem invoking the Harmful Digital Communication Act in this instance.

  Especially how David Fisher and Barry Soper understand the context of the text message (which isn’t “controversial”) and the timelines involved, and they probably expect (like most of us) that the Police investigation won’t find anything too concerning at the end of the day.
  
  So if the Police end up concluding it isn’t worth pursuing any further, how despicable of Fisher and Soper to be denigrating a “victim” of JLR’s narcissism? (Gee, how about waiting until the outcome of the Police investigation first)??
  
  Just so they (and NZME) can be “first” to get the story out there, making it fair game for the rest of the MSM to follow up and do the same?
  
  And for Soper especially, it is another (feeble) opportunity to attack National with, meanwhile his NZF and Labour “mates” can carry on screwing over NZ (with barely any criticism)!

Aaargh – I hear on the box this morning, someone talking about visitors coming down (from EU countries) to visit ‘Our beautiful country’ !
I guess this is the beautiful country where they will not be able to find a beach in the greater Auckland area in which to swim (in our glorious summer weather)
NZ needs to stop lying to visitors, and sort out the fundamental issues, dragging us down to 3rd world status.

  previous to the last election National used to be in coalition with the Māori Party. They didn’t do enough to help prop them up and now they’re out of office.
  If the Nats had stayed away from Ratana their influence with Māori in general would have continued to slip slide away and if they want to return to what they see as their rightful place as leaders of the country they can’t afford to alienate them any further.

      Tariana Turia never dominated the party after the style of Winston.
      Back in 2008 when they first went into coalition with National they had five seats, but their support dwindling away at successive elections.
      Five seats would have made a big difference last election.
      The Māori Party may have fell apart by itself, but not without help from the Labour Party.

There is an interesting article at The Spinoff about carbon taxes. (As an aside, it’s written by Jeanette Fitzsimons, which makes me nostalgic for the days when the Greens were a genuine environmental party.)

A key quote;

To be effective in changing behaviour the price needs to be high and steadily rising, but any government which places an effective price on carbon commits political suicide. Citizens don’t see that they get anything for what they have to pay and view it as just another tax grab.

This is because, to be blunt, we don’t get anything for it. The whole point of a carbon tax is to massively reduce the amount of carbon we use, which pretty much automatically means a massive reduction in our lifestyle. That is the harsh reality.

Reducing our carbon use may be an unfortunate necessity, but anybody trying to claim it will be a benefit is effectively lying. You can say it has the “benefit” of preventing climate change, but that just means we get to keep the climate we currently have. We are going to have to accept significant lifestyle reductions just to maintain the status quo. You can hardly expect people to be happy about this.

Trying to compensate for a carbon tax with tax cuts elsewhere (or a “citizens dividend”, which sounds very much like a UBI) is simply not possible, because most things people want to do/buy unavoidably require emissions. Either the tax cut/dividend is enough that people can still do all the same things at the carbon-adjusted prices (in which case it’s just tweaking the book-keeping and won’t alter behaviour), or it isn’t. If it isn’t, then people’s effective carbon-adjusted buying power is reduced and they’re worse off, no matter what the number in their bank account says.

      FWIW: The whole ‘nuclear’ thing was carefully examined by the then-NZED during the mid-1960′ and ultimately found to be potentially too dangerous.
      
      Without going into much detail, the best site was on the Kaipara Harbour, on the spot where the RNZAF live weapons range currently is, as it satisfied the criteria of a ‘relatively’ short distance to the main consumer (Auckland city).
      
      However, seasonal (and prevailing) wind patterns from either the SW (Tasman) or NE (Pacific) would have been problematical if the dreaded meltdown occured, as Auckland, Whangarei and most of Northland would have been badly contaminated by fall-out.
      
      It ws fully investigated but then shelved as being too dangerous (and ‘politically’ untennable for whomever authorised its construction).
      
      Nothing has changed since .

    Nukes are currently way too expensive to build – 5-10x price of fossil fuel plants. Takes 10-15 years, armies of lawyers, and a huge group of highly skilled specialised construction workers moved to a typically shitty remote location with their families.
    
    Only way they might become cheap enough is small modular or larger floating units built in factories and transported to site. But there is nothing like that available yet, and probably not for 10-20 years. So it’s not a viable option for planning.

  Climate change may or may not be greatly influenced by human activity as huge climate changes to and from ice ages in the past pre date humans so my guess is the Sun is the big driver. So by concentrating efforts to adapting and not arguing about cause humans are more likely to survive the change whilst still reducing carbon use and measuring the results.

Yet appears to ignore the impression that I get about McDowie’s situation which clearly shows a breakdown. Could it be she realised she’d been used for her sex, and was informed by JLR he was going public?

  I would start with all the texts from her phone those from JLR. Then mention of his sexual prowess or lack thereof not a bad way to go. Anyone else she can drag into the “party” all the better.
  Loyalty seems not to exist any more. Loyalty is not a one sided or one way street. There will be none for Ms McDowie, so is any required from her.
  Did National start her downfall with the hints from Bennett relating to JLR’s infidelities.
  She should cleanse her soul so to speak, Tell all about everyone, cleanse the swamp of parliament and the press gallery. Then in the future maybe people might think twice before they cast a stone – the stone on human frailty, on extra marital affairs that have been going on since time immemorial, rightly or wrongly.
  Imagine the media scrambling for the story to ensure they can leave their names out. Big dollars in that I would think, but only in NZ, because in reality who gives a toss – apart from the stupid media who think they are important.

    We could go back to merit as a principle? So women’s cricket would get coverage if the crowd numbers and interest merited it. Let the public decide what they want to watch.
    
    In terms of $$$, I think that you can make a reasonable argument that athletes’ pay should reflect the income that they generate for the sport. (That said, there are a few odd things that go on – I think the US national women’s football team are better earners than the men’s, but get paid less to play for their country – that probably needs to be fact checked though, tbh).
    There is another aspect to this, of course. Women’s and girls’ participation and interest in rugby, football and cricket is growing while men’s/boys’ is declining. From the perspective of the sports’ governing bodies, it might be in their long-term interest to foster the women’s games. Just a thought.

“Beggars” in Lambton Quay in Wellington are now common place. I occasionally buy a coffee for them but rarely give them money.

Anyway, a couple of days ago, I stopped in my tracks. A young Maori woman had a box containing a wide variety of solvents, glues, and gibstop cartridges. Like she had gone on a glue binge at Mitre 10. She was pouring this into a plastic bag (not single use) and madly inhaling.

Now she was at obvious risk of sudden death but everyone just walked by. So I called 111. But they said they were already on to it. Next thing 2 cops turn up and persuade her to accompany them.

Sad.

The two senate votes this afternoon (US time) are not a good sign for Trump getting a bill that funds his border wall. Six Republican senators crossed the floor to vote for the Democrats version of the bill. The Republican version of the bill only had a single Democrat vote for it, plus two Republicans voting against. That echos the trend in house votes on various funding bills, where far more Republicans than Democrats have crossed the floor.

And importantly, all of the bills put up to vote so far have been essentially political posturing, containing no genuine attempts at compromise. The latest Democrat funding bill reportedly contains $5.7 billion extra for border security (but explicitly not for the wall). That’s going to cause a dilemma for Republicans. Democrats have clearly decided that negotiating with Trump is pointless, so they’re going around him instead.

So turns out there have been MASSIVE errors in official net immigration numbers that have likely been going on for years – eg updated figure is just 45000 for year vs 60000 I saw reported a few weeks back.

How on earth they have managed to screw up counting passports at airports so badly I don’t know, but someone needs to front up and explain in detail what the error is, how far back it goes and what impacts it has on our economic picture. Eg maybe our population figure is way off and our ‘housing crisis’ isn’t.

Not that a belief system has anything to do with race, but the left are a pretty confused lot.

Anyway, many women and those of various sexual and identity persuasions can be got onside if the right assert a libertarian frame on these social issues (be who you like so long as you’re not hurting anyone else) and position against totalitarianism in all its forms, including religious, and against tolerating violent behaviour from anyone, especially the imported variety.

It won’t be lost on the women of Sweden what might happen if ongoing attacks on women are tolerated by the political left in the name of diversity.

I suspect many of these women are “shy tories” and growing in number.

This is what a GSA is. It is against the law for parents to be informed their child has been made to join a GSA. It is illegal to tell a parent any of their kids GSA activities.

A kid was taken by a ‘facilitator’ off school grounds. The facilitator wasn’t a parent, or staff. Just a gay individual. They took the kid to their private residence, and to other GSA kids.

A 13 year old was given a 50 page book with homosexual sex instructions. 153 condoms. He was made to put condoms on banana. He was given materials with a giant spaceship shaped like a dick and told to ‘explore his anus’.

The lawyers for the child were appealing a ruling by a purple haired judge against an interim injunction allowing principals to tell parents their kids were being taken away from school to homes to be sexually groomed. They also wanted an injunction against the homosexual minister of education defunding or de-accrediting schools who told parents their kids weren’t in school or were forced into GSAs.

The GSA’s are also coming to New York, where they just ruled that abortions can be conducted on a baby at 9 months, 1 minute before it’s breached the canal.

This is why I actually like Polynesians. Polys have a clear sense of right and wrong as it pertains to these issues. The promise of their extremely violent opposition to this being done to their kids is the only thing preventing the roll out of the GSA framework here. And I haven’t even go to the Transgender part of this – where the Trannies within the GSA can administer to your kids hormone drugs and puberty blockers and it’s illegal for you to know. And it’s especially illegal for parents to intervene.

Right – so within that web, what is a man to do, exactly? Nothing – except kill everyone he can and then open his veins at home like the Roman patricians did. And that is what will happen, and the gays will screech about bigotry when they are running an industrial national level scale child grooming operation in Canada using the law to prevent any opposition.

Police have released an online tool to enable the public to report lost property and intentional property damage on Police’s website.

Assistant Commissioner Service Jevon McSkimming says online reporting is part of a drive by police to bring real change to the way we deliver our services to the public.

He says police want people to be able to contact us anywhere, anytime and through a variety of ways.

“Online reporting is being run as a trial and since it went live on November 22 2018, police has received more than 3,700 reports online,” says Jevon.

“We plan to expand the online service this year so people can report general theft, theft from a car and shoplifting.
The new Police Digital Services Centre is up and running in Kapiti with staff answering non-emergency calls and processing online reports.

“Furthermore, a single non-emergency number, on track to be delivered this year, will give people a national number to get in contact with Police about non-emergency matters.

    You’ve been terribly misinformed. They were a piece of unmitigated Pommie garbage built & designed by unionised British “tradesmen”. They cracked heads, overheated, first gear life was measured in hours (bearings from memory) & they rusted so badly that after a couple of years you could kick holes in the sills & guards with bare feet. They were underpowered, thirsty & less reliable than a 10 0’clock shit.

      Very well said Nasska, they were a disaster of a car with a very suspect motor and rust around the body. Never heard of the first gear problem but that doesn’t surprise me at all.
      The only thing good about the piece of shit was never hearing the diffs packing up (maybe NZs kept piling the banana skin in).

        Pommy crap was about all you could buy when I was a young bugger stigie. I had a 105E Anglia, one Mini & two Cortinas before the boss’s brother wanted to sell his ’63 Chrysler Valiant in a hurry.
        
        Quite a chick magnet. Wide ovals, a Coby muffler but other than that stock standard. Replaced the front suspension joints a few times, fully reconned the motor once, a couple of clutches but I was still towing the kids pony float with it fifteen years later.

        Shit we are getting back a bit Nasska, my first was a 105E with the 997cc motor and then by putting 1200 crank and rods in made a huge difference then 1340cc rods and crank out of the 315 Classic was even better.
        After that of course was moving to the cross flow motors 1300 0r 1600. Of course you cant pull the chicks like you can with the Valiant !~

        Paid $3000.00 for a brand new 73 Chrysler car. Also had a 72 Chrysler station wagon. Put that on Natural gas and could go from Tga to Auckland for about 10.50 up and the fill with the gas from Auckland and cost $12.00 back. Less calorific value in the Auckland stuff.

      Family had a brand new 62 Plymouth with a V8 Automatic 3 speed box Two tone Yellow and white. twin headlamps. Towed trailers back and forth over the old Rimatuka rd when it was not a highway like it is now. Supplied I think be Mansells Moters. Only thing that wet wrong was the brakes failed one day. Came over the hill going like bat shit crazy as my dad did because he could. Toddelled down through Upper Hutt, went to use the brakes at Silverstream and no one home, so he left turned very quickly and went over the crossing. In those days the cops used to sit on the shingle patch just there. Cop fires off after us but had to wait for the train. Kinda a close call.

US President Donald Trump has announced a new deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government for three weeks.

Trump made the announcement on Friday (Saturday NZ time) at the White House, where he thanked Americans for their patience.

Late Thursday, Trump said he’d consider a “reasonable agreement” worked out by Senate leaders in exchange for a “down payment” on a wall along the US Mexico border.
