        Not sure whether you are just taking the piss or not, but more in the spirit of trivia than anything – we get words like menstruation from the Latin “mensis” meaning month. Similarly, “manufacture” comes from the Latin “manus” meaning hand). Neither family of words has anything to do with gender.

        Very interesting. I have always thought Bain was probably innocent but could never prove it. This is solid new evidence in his favor.

        In the video I watched, investigators exactly replicated the marks shown in the crime scene photo. The marks are distinctive and unusual. You offer no reason to accept your claim that they were “clearly older marks with ingrained dirt.”

        It happens I own a .22 semi-auto, with a slightly different magazine cartridge, but it loads the same way, and I see the point exactly. I have had those marks on my own thumb and index finger.
        They didn’t “try very hard.” They merely demonstrated what happened when they reloaded the magazine after shooting the gun.
        Asserting that something is nonsense does not make it nonsense.

  Having seen his behaviour on two other forums I can confirm he is an awful bitter little man only too happy to accuse people who disagree with him of suffering from mental illness or mock those actually suffering from mental illness is one of the many nasty things he does online.

        That’s a constitutional nicety if the State itself is at fault or is claimed to be at fault. This govt is too hasty and may well fall into traps that more capable administrations would avoid.
        
        The idea of certifying drugs are safe using some quick tests pre-event makes a mockery of the extensive testing expected under the Medicines Act. Some relaxation may be reasonable but that needs to be applied uniformly.

  One would expect that this testing has been thoroughly tested before being used here. The taxpayer doesn’t want to be paying out millions yet again in the future to drug users. The meth testing and consequent evictions, apologies and payments are evidence that this testing needs to be done correctly.

  Good question. I don’t think the charitable trust that test the drugs promote any drug as ‘safe’, though. They are simply testing it to ascertain what is actually in it, versus what the dealer told you it was. Even if you got ‘lucky’ and were sold pure MDMA instead of something cut with rat poison, lighter fluid and tripe, the testers aren’t telling you ‘go ahead, it’s completely safe’.

Hotel and motel owners in Auckland are concerned they will be pinged with a higher bed tax because of the much lower than expected number of Airbnb etc providers paying.

Not unsympathetic but hotels and motels have agitated persistently for a ‘level playing field’ (aka pay less bed tax). How much risk analysis did they do? Did they actually consider that AC might get numbers very wrong?

Roberts said he was concerned that hotels and motels would have to make up the difference by paying more in next year’s rates. “They were looking to collect a set amount per year and the way of collecting that is by simply dividing up the number of targeted properties by that sum.

“The more properties paying, the less each property will pay.”

    it is unlikely though, that anyone arguing agasint the physical realities of climate science is amenable to any method of persuasion. Griff has settled for the amotionally satisfying reponse of pointing out the logical flaws and cherry-picked data relied upon by those wishful thinkers and adding a cherry on the top in terms of well-deserved abuse.
    A better response would probably be to ignore those moons and just concentrate on supporting rational responses to the problem as proposed by an overwhlmingconsensus of those who actually know what they are talking about.

    Griff is learning to stick to addressing the issues rather than attacking people. Not only does it improve the quality of debate it helps make stronger and more credible arguments.
    
    Blog moderation is difficult, but better moderation deters less people from joining in discussions.
    
    I know some people like things as they are here as a virtual free-for-all, but how some abuse the privilege is quite unfair on DPF as it impacts on his reputation (but he chooses too do little about it).

    I’v e heard very similar opinions about John key and National. I’ve argued against them.
    
    In my opinion every leader and every MP and every party does care about people and children, but it is very difficult (impossible) to get policy balances that keep everyone safe. And different parties have different approaches.
    
    Do you think that the Government is entirely responsible for everyone, and everyone’s children and their well being?

How fake images spread racist stereotypes about migrants across the globe

On social media, blogs and in the mouths of certain politicians, migrants are regularly associated with criminality, taking handouts or, even worse, terrorism. Manipulated or fake images are often used to illustrate these racist stereotypes, which are then massively circulated online. The FRANCE 24 Observers team has collaborated on a project aiming to sort and analyse various fake news stories about migrants. Here are our initial results.

Is this what passes for decent political opinion?
– A random quote from a third party
– A linked source called “viridian” that actually just links to another random WOBH page where a German woman is hassled by police for having braids
– A budget-tier meme of a Biblical verse
– A bunch of unproven allegations about the PMs personal beliefs and attitudes about immigration, brown Muslim men and women
– Wild unfounded claims of “skyrocketing rape statistics, Muslim child rape gangs, female genital mutilation, child marriage, polygamy and Sharia law”
– Then a random picture of a bunch of assaulted women (which a Google reverse image search shows the same image used on sites like mormondiscussions, dailystormer, thewhiteresistance, and 4chan archive site 4plebs – where the question “How do we protect ourselves from false rape allegations?” on /pol/ was answered with the same image, including the reply “Murder as many as possible. Those who remain will comply or die.”)
I suppose if you get your information from garbage sources, you’ll end up with garbage opinions as well.
Edit: Oh, I see now. viridian is a commenter on that German braid page. WOBH is making a whole post out of a random commenters reply? Lols. Outstanding alternative media journalism. They should be very proud.

Kiwiblog is very quick to take instances of atrocious or stupid acts by a few as evidence that everybody who shares their ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual preference or political opinion (whichever is least likely to be shared with other Kiwibloggers) must be condemned as if they too were guilty of the same crime.
      
      Unless the perpetrators in a particular instance are white men. Then we are all about individual choices and steadfastly opposed to identity politics and collective responsibility.
      
      Even where we had been arguing the exact opposite before it emerged that a white guy did it and we were assuming that the perpetrators must have been Muslim or Maori.

  Meanwhile, the changed control of the house committees seems likely to spark multiple investigations of Trump and a fair number of his dodgy cronies. None of that will matter to the Trumpkins in the base though.

        Manafort was campaign manager for a brief period during the convention, and has been convicted on crimes that had already been investigated (and not followed up on) from 2013 or so. Crimes that incidentally he was involved with on an equal footing (as partners) with the Podesta brothers, who not at all surprisingly have not been indicted for the exact same crimes because they have the magic “D” after their names.
        
        Flynn, railroaded because of a long standing dispute between him and Andrew McCabe, plus considerable dodgy dealings by the FBI. Did you know that the “302” written statement of the interview between Strzok and Flynn that is the basis for the charges was not written until a number of months after the interview – or at least the one presented to the court was. Andrew Weissman who is the prosecutor has a known history of attempts to pervert justice (the whole prosecution of Arthur Anderson as part of the Enron case collapsed because of his malfeasance) and there more yet to come out about this case.
        
        The whole exercise is a “show me the man and I’ll find you a crime” basis. Only those rules only seem to apply to those without a “D” after their names.

Why National over ACT? I don’t have a stake in it either way, but I’m curious. I do feel a fair criticism of the National Party is that it tends to administer Labour legislation instead of repealing it, and ACT seems less inclined to do so. And yet – National gets far greater support than ACT.

What’re everyone’s thoughts?

    Maybe not quite. It shows the general principle that folks need to be personally prepared for foreseeable curcumstances. An example in Wellington recently was the ‘Long Walk Home’, in which people were encouraged to practice walking home after a major disaster. for many people working in central Wellington, such an endeavour could easily take 2 to 3 days.
    People need to prepare along the lines of knowing where they are most immediately safe, and how can they stay there for up to five days.

      In the event of a major quake along the Fault line that separates the business centre of wellington from points north, the road and rail lines would be hugely damaged and people WOULD have to walk home, and it WOULD take some people 2-3 days to get home, provided that they could scale the debris and fallen cliffs. We knew this back in the ’60s when we bought our first house in the city. So we bought in the Eastern suburbs, on a hill. And a freezer.

    It does indeed provide the most direct route to the airport by bypassing the central city but a more scenic route is by taking the roads round the harbour – and at any time you can divert into the city itself. Or, you could take the ‘back route’ off the motorway and round the southern coast.
    I was listening to Talkback radio last evening, and the dopey presenter didn’t have a clue. Of course, he’s an Aucklander . . . . .

Organise Aotearoa occupies Brazilian Embassy

Today the Brazilian Embassy in Wellington was occupied by Organise Aotearoa, an emerging socialist organisation based in Aotearoa, to protest newly inaugurated far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s first day in office.

Activists occupied the embassy in solidarity with the people of Brazil. Jair Bolsonaro controversially emerged victorious in Brazil’s national elections last year despite huge public outcry. His plans to rollback protections of the Amazon forest and attacks on indigenous and LGBT rights in Brazil threaten working class Brazilians. Organise Aotearoa’s spokesperson Kat Buissink notes “It was important to occupy the embassy today because the Brazilian Embassy in New Zealand represents a fascist government, we want to make it clear to the Brazilian regime that the people of Aotearoa do not accept fascism in any form, including a diplomatic presence.”

These fuckwits could have protested outside the embassy, in which case I’d say it was a misguided protest, but a legitimate one. I assume from the words “occupied the embassy” in the press release that they went inside the embassy as a deliberate form of disruptive protest.

Embassies and consulates operate under international law, and diplomatic staff should be free to go about their lawful business.

  A couple of thoughts from me. First of all this doesn’t seem to be reported in the mainstream media? I just looked on stuff and no mention of it. I would have thought that the illegal occupation of the embassy of a foreign nation on New Zealand soil would be big news?
  
  Secondly Brazil has been run into the ground by raggedy tag leftists for the last decade or so. As in America, as in Brexit, the people are revolting and going for something else – right-wing populist policies.
  
  Thirdly I like the sound of the Brazilian government. Apparently the new president is not afraid to talk about God. Given the problems in Brazil they certainly need divine intervention. He apparently is against the homosexual takeover of society and I say amen to that as well. Who knows he may also free up the market and allow the economy to boom for the benefit of everyone?

They claim there is more damage than the Developers are admitting, including the apartments on the upper levels. Beyond safety issues, owners are worried the Developers are rushing the repairs, with the cracks being ‘papered over’. “We are suffering. It’s a big weight on our shoulders” they said. “Some of us put all the money we have into this, but everything is destroyed. It’s a lemon!”

A property speculator friend of mine over there was saying he’s “..hoping to pick up a few real cheap apartments once some of the owners panic and look to quit their investments real cheap”.

He’s just not sure whether he’d be better off buying above or below Level Ten.

In 2007, the road toll climbed to 421 people – that figure fell to 253 in 2013 before going back up to 382 last year.

If it will be “many decades” before New Zealand sees a substantial change in the road toll, why was there a 40% drop in deaths 2007 to 2013?
Was not 40% in just six years a substantial reduction?

And suicide – The number of people who have taken their own lives in New Zealand is the highest since records began, with 668 dying by suicide in the past year [July 2017 to June 2018]

If only two of the 2018 road deaths were classified as suicides (“self-intended deaths”) it could be questionable as to whether last year’s road “accidental” deaths were higher, or not, than the year before, and so possibly not the worst in a decade.

Former Prime Minister Bill English has been made a Sir in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. He says it is great to be acknowledged.

In 2008 he became Finance Minister under Sir John Key’s leadership, before taking the reins again in 2016 when Key suddenly baled out.

Though his full name and title is now Sir Simon William English, he told Stuff he hopes people call him plain old ‘Dipper’.

Remember how Labour and the Greens used to berate National about various security breaches? It’ll be interesting then, to see how they handle this:

National says a lost USB drive, containing information on more than 1000 NZTA employees, is a massive security breach and is calling on the Privacy Commissioner to investigate.

The USB drive was misplaced somewhere between Auckland and Wellington late last year, Transport Minister Phil Twyford confirmed in written parliamentary questions a week before Christmas.

He also confirmed the USB drive was not password protected, nor was it encrypted.
It contained the names and email addresses of 1104 NZTA staff.

National’s Data and Cybersecurity spokesman Shane Reti said the misplaced drive constitutes a “significant data privacy breach”.

“It is hard to believe, and completely unacceptable, that NZTA would courier staff identity data without password protection and without encryption.”

It is unclear from the written questions if the drive was recovered, but Twyford admits it was misplaced.

He said he was made aware of the situation by the NZTA’s chair on December 2.

“Transport Minister Phil Twyford is responsible for the NZTA and his lack of transparency over this data loss is another example of NZTA failing under his watch,” Reti said.

    Does depend on Volume. Unless one has very high speed connections, sending TB of data is quicker via a physical courier within NZ anyway.
    
    We don’t have super fast lines, so establishing the first cut of our cloud backup was done this way, copied to a couple of USB-3 portable disks and couriered to our cloud backup host and uploaded, followed by an online synch of the deltas. Total amount was a little short of 8 TB and estimated 2-3 days saturating our link to upload live.
    
    So although the quantity mentioned for the NZTA data would seem to be rather light for this to apply, there are still good reasons to physically transport disks.

    Just to record this event (it’s not a common one), I totally agree with mma here. Have done so once myself (takes quick break to polish halo…) and the police were indeed able to reunite owner with cash (about $500 as I recall) and they sent me a very nice card and a little gift, which was much appreciated.

        Where I go to my beach property the beach changes virtually all the time with sand being moved around by the storms. Many years ago groins were built to hold the sand in, and now the groins are buried deeply in sand. It is just nature doing its thing

        Actually that part of the coast isn’t being “slowly eroded” – it’s being rather quickly eroded. It’s unreinforced sedimentary fill from the rivers and very vulnerable to storms washing it away.
        
        Also really not helped by the significant mining of aggregate from the coast just a little further towards Napier.
        
        The coast further South from Waimarama down is also being eaten back at a reasonable rate. Very soft sediments of very recent origin. Higher sea levels would encourage erosion, but a properly constructed sea-wall would stop it dead as well.

    I wonder how the ‘climate changers’ rationalise the continual (like hundreds of years) erosion of large parts of the coast of Yorkshire and the loss of dozens of towns, many of which are now several miles out in the North Sea. Much of this has been caused by natural erosion and nobody would have claimed ‘climate change’ until the last few years . Exactly the same situation applies in Hawkes Bay and other pars of the NZ coast. It is just what happens and if you want to build/buy on the beach front, you must be ready for your front yard to slowly disappear. If mankind stopped all fossil fuel use and put plus in the bums of sheep and cattle it would make not one iota of difference to the erosion patterns.
    Read ‘The lost towns of the Yorkshire coast and other chapters bearing upon the geography of the district’ by Thomas Sheppard and published in 1912.

      I once worked with an engineer specialising in NZ coastal hydrology. No one owns the tides, sand or coasts. Any control is brief as ocean currents move around whatever is concerning them. A small change in the distant sea floor can ravage an area of coast.

      mma, you’re almost right on that, oddly enough. But good to know that you trust the insurance companies not to take advantage of irrational panics to increase their profit margins.
      
      Independent analysis (not conducted by Insurance companies with vested interests) show that rising insurance losses are caused by rising investment in vulnerable areas. Just as an example, the hurricane vulnerable coastal areas of the US were very thinly populated 80-100 years ago, but have been very significantly developed since then. Hence any landfalling hurricanes inevitably cause more losses to property because there’s more there to be damaged. the actual increase in losses very closely tracks the increased investments; so about 100% of the increase in losses can be attributed to that, and 0% to any changes in climate.
      
      Fire damage (in California for example) has a similar pattern, until relatively recently no one was building whole suburbs in significantly forested areas; and where there were patches of housing home owners largely cleared fire hazard growth from close proximity to their houses. Neither of those conditions holds now, so a major fire will again inevitably cause far more significant losses because of human actions unrelated to climate. Australia has had exactly the same issue.

    No stephie correlation is not causation. Increasing insurance disasters are caused by people being allowed to build in places that are flood prone. That is why the new part of Edgecombe flooded – it wasn’t bigger river flows. Same with the Brisbane floods, though that was sort of climate change related – the council held back water in the upstream dam until too late as they had been told droughts were getting worse. New Zealand isn’t being hit by more bad weather, just bigger effects from inappropriate development.
    As others have noted, insurance companies have a vested interest in talking up disasters. That allows them to increases premiums and profits.

    There was a plan to build groynes at Haumoana but it was a very expensive exercise and the main beneficiaries were those near the beach in the small settlement.
    They thought the wider community should fund the groynes but that raised problems with funding other schemes.

      I’d largely go along with that JB. As you know I chauffeured livestock for many a year & you get a fair idea of what to watch out for. IMO the consistently best drivers were reps…..they drove fast but competently & had good cars. The very worst were the nervous nellies who only ventured away from the carport on fine summer days which backs up your observation of the value of practise rather than theory.
      
      The good ol’days of 32 ton all up, an overheating Cummins, one gear left (reverse) & the chicky babes flashing from the passenger’s seat when you let their wanky, petrolhead boyfriends pass. 🙂

  Yeah, those photos don’t show any dangerous driving, just someone breaking the rules, which is a different thing altogether. I’ve done this plenty of times when I had a good view of the road ahead, because the more you can straighten the road out the more comfortable ride your passengers get.
  
  I still remember a hair-raising drive from Blenheim to Christchurch in my brother-in-law’s Mk III Cortina, in which he made the road as straight as possible at every opportunity so he could go as fast as possible. Made me nervous, but it wasn’t any more risky than the speed I would have driven at.

The road toll for ten day in NZ from Dec 24 was 9 deaths.
The road toll in Thailand for seven days from Dec 27 was 463 deaths.
Thailand has about fifteen times the population of NZ so extrapolated to seven days our toll would equate to not much more than 20% of the rate over there.

        I happened to be in Carterton one morning in the lead up to an election a few years back Maggy. This big black bus swings in & parks under the town’s clock.
        
        After a few minutes the door opens & out steps an immaculately dressed dwarf. He stands on some sort of box provided by a flunky & addresses an assembled crowd of mostly old ladies.
        
        It was worth watching. He had them eating out of his hands. I fully expected the old dears to rip their bloomers off & throw them to him but decorum won out & he re-alighted the bus & took off.
        
        Faults he has galore but lack of personal charisma is not one of them.

        A couple of mates and I were called in to track a bloke (presumed dead) who had murdered another bloke on Wyatt’s place in Martinborough and, I was told, with Wyatt’s shotgun – through a toilet door. Some sort of gay love triangle gone wrong, we were told.
        
        Got to have a good look round the Riddiford block.
        
        Found his getaway stepthrough. At that point we were called off as it was clear he hadn’t topped himself as thought but had doubled back into town and was later found there.
        
        The cop accompanying us gave us the shits – walked behind us constantly working the bolt of his .222 – until my mate suggested that he desist.
        
        Summer 1990/91. True story. Came across quite a bit of pot too.

        He rolled under a house to try to get some cover but the piece of crap shot him at pretty much point blank range. Afterwards he was crippled with a fucked arm.

All good things come to an end….. the missus is busy cleaning up and getting things packed for the trip back to the Big-Smoke tomorrow. Would have to say that weather-wise, this has been the best 10 days we’ve had at the beach for a long time.

What amazes me, is just how much trash two people actually accumulate in such a short period. Unfortunately, we missed the Council Rubbish-Collection last week, and the next one isn’t till Monday. We’ve ended up with 5 of those big black Kleen Saks stuffed with bottles, thai takeaway containers, cling-film, polythene trays….you name it. I can’t leave it out on the kerb, because we won’t be back until the 25th to bring the bins in. So I’m going to chuck it in the back of the boat shortly, and head out just behind Tiri. There’s a spot there marked on the GPS showing a 40mtr drop-off. Might even have time for a fish.
