  Given the CoL are publishing their bill today (the one they wanted consensus on, but see fit to only give the Nats a briefing on later this morning. Strange form of consensus), more times than I really want to is the answer to your question.
  
  Interesting listening to Bill English & a “poverdee campaigner” on Moaning Report”, sounds like the CoL solution is to throw money at incomes of poor parents, considered the easy part. But they are looking to hide behind all fig leaf of having fighting child poverdee legislated, while running away from the hard tasks of measuring, understanding & fixing the true underlying causes of child poverty.
  
  So, my bet is we will hear the term far too often, but as usual not much will be done or achieved in addressing the perceived problem.

    Fatherlessness pays a huge role in that and in the next generation, but English won’t say anything on the matter as he is speaking out against ‘equality’ and ‘wimmin’.
    But the reality is that men and women aren’t equal — as mothers clearly make useless fathers, as the jails are full of the fatherless.
    
    Like Key I don’t think English really cares about the truth and he’ll keep running away from it.

      Talk for yourself but if you breed it is your responsibility and if you don’t have the same rights as your husband in your marriage don’t blame others for your predicament. I have been married for 44years and raised a family and have seven Grandchildren and we have done everything together including working together in management for over 35 years. It is not Bill English telling lies and it is not all males fault if you can’t work together to raise a family why bother to bring children into this world because they have no chance with the attitudes of people like you.

        One word: welfare.
        
        Without welfare, children are a drain on resources, therefore a woman needs a quality man who will bring in an income and be there for her and be a quality father.
        
        There are consequences for making a bad choice, so people learn not to make them.
        
        With welfare, children become a source of revenue. No need to choose a quality man, no need for a quality father. Just select a bloke based on his rooting excitement value and not on other qualities. Heck why stop at one? Have a different father for each kid!
        
        There are no consequences for poor choices. In fact there are even subsidies!
        
        The flow on from that is that there is diminishing reason to be a quality man. May as well be a shithead because they get laid more.
        
        Ladies, your most important job in how you influence society is in the bloke you choose to partner with. You are responsible for quality control.
        
        You should be choosing men based on who is going to be the best father for your kids, not just on who spins your hormones.

        I agree with you about the responsibility belonging across the gender divide, but parents of girls need to be strong on teaching to discern. I am sure you have talked about that with the young women in your family.
        These screeching banshees who want power power for wimmin fail to recognise how much power women already have. It just needs to be combined with better judgement in a tragically large number of cases.

        Quality control is in the hands of the women because they have the eggs and the relative cost for conception is high for women and low for men. It’s not “fair”, it is just basic biology.
        
        Good men (I like to put myself in that category) can get very disillusioned if the girls go for the bastards all the time and there seems little reward in being a Good Man (besides following your own moral compass).
        
        As a friend-zone girl at uni put to me: “There are the marrying kind and the fucking kind. You’re the marrying kind.” They want the fucking kind for fun, but then wanted a Good Man to settle down with for marriage and kids.
        
        The welfare state means they can just have the fucking kind their whole life and not have to settle down and find a Good Man.
        
        If that happens, then Good Men are bred out of existence and Good Men are just seen as losers.
        
        Why be a Good Man? Might as well just join the legion of dickheads?
        
        I hope you’re guiding your daughter towards quality rather than hedonism.

    It could be, of course, that “child poverdy” is simply made-up with no factual basis and therefore measuring, understanding and fixing the underlying causes is impossible.
    
    It could be that this action is simply yet another way to redistribute workers’ income to non-workers.
    
    It certainly appears to be that to me.

        Poverdy is an industry resulting in lots of well paid people holding inquiries, committees, employing countless but basically rearranging the deckchairs to justify their own existence.

Even though I find it difficultly to comprehend their nature and substance I take it upon myself to unreservedly apologise to you for any hurt or offensiveness I may have caused you .

Dotcom was facing claims of criminal copyright violation, something which was later found not to be a crime in New Zealand.
But still a US crime for which the USA has requested his extradition.
So what technical glitch is currently holding that up? The 2020 Election?

“They terrorised my family and arrested me like I’m Osama bin Laden for nothing more than a civil copyright claim.”
No, they didn’t arrest bin Laden, they killed him – as far as we know.

Dotcom and his former wife late last year accepted a confidential settlement from police over the raid.
So, why is he now saying he is suing the New Zealand Government for “billions”.

“I’m happy for New Zealand’s future and anything that would come from my damages claim would go towards good causes in New Zealand. I’m also open to come to a reasonable settlement with the new Government.
“I’m sure the taxpayers would welcome a less costly and peaceful resolution of the matter, after six years of unnecessary drama.”
So Dotcom might sue the New Zealand Government for billions – only taxpayer money – and then charitably give some of it back to us taxpayers?

And “… a reasonable settlement with the new Government” ?
If they allow me to stay.

Kim Dotcom has spoken of his “fairytale” wedding day – but revealed poor health has forced him and his new wife to delay their planned move to Queenstown.
Does that foreshadow the wisdom of staying near to a hospital with an adequate sized MRI scanner, or heart facilities, or something else that may cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars for a non-citizen?

And why has the Government not told us yet about Dotcom suing for damages?
If he is.
And, in particular, for how much?
And does this extend the time Dotcom can remain in the country, to take us for billions and give some back?
And is the Government with-holding any information on this, so they can drop it in as a great diversion – like “the Waitangi wedding”, and “What will Jacinda’s baby daughter really be called, because ‘Eight’ is a silly name just to commemorate the founding of Ratana?” – the next time they screw up and need some distraction.

Next big New Zealand First / Labour ( … and the Greens) coalition stuff up, like –
• the only land Shane Jones can find to plant his trees is below the high tide mark
• anything below high tide is to be covered with a water tax, increasing with global warming :o)
• the whole 100m tree thing is cancelled because they can’t find an appropriate Maori name to call the project – one that makes any sense.

  Yvette, sorry no more to f a diversion than it was in early 2012 when all kicked off. Truth, it was a screw up at a political & govt level in 2012 & should never have been sanctioned by the Key govt. Now the taxpayer will end up footing a bill needlessly. Bill on TV this morning saying National will challenge the COL after they abandoned National’s work to lift 88,000 out of social disfunction. National intended to help those who don’t have the ability to make good personal and spending choices to break their self-destructive cycle. Bill said National will hold the COL accountable.

      CYPS/CYFS no matter what they are called have never functioned as intended. My partner and I had an argument one night and my daughter went to school the next day and one of the teachers asked her what was wrong as she was a bit down. Next thing we have social workers banging on our doors demanding meetings and counselling and threatening us with government department interference all over an argument. Amount of children saved from the threat of family violence? Zero. I told them to get fucked, an argument doesnt warrant that sort of response.

  But they did not “sell” them to the electorate.
  Treasury came up with the ideas, National went with them, but we were never told who they were working on, and what results they were having.
  The first we really heard about it was from Bill on the tv debates.

Trying to discuss politics with a socialist is like playing chess with a pigeon – no matter how brilliant you are the pigeon is going wander aimlessly about knocking random pieces off the board – strutting like a winner.
  
  Bill has to go rent a pair and start playing hard ball. Vote against P&CTPP. Oppose Labour everytime NZF or the Greens go rogue. Show how unstable the coalition is. Put pressure on them.

    If National voted against the PCTTP, they would be ridiculed and punished by the voters, because it would be seen as political petulance.
    
    It’s far better for every National speaker in every debate on the PCTPP legislation to remind the House and have it written forever in Hansard that Labour, NZF and the Greens opposed the TPP, and that only the Greens have not done a massive, hypocritical u-turn.

    Vote against UNTIL the CoL agree publicly that it is the same agreement they opposed when in Opposition, that a new name has not changed anything, and IF it has changed, document clearly the substantive changes which have been made which they now find have rendered it acceptable.
    
    At the least, it will force the Greens to alienate their lefty supporters and vote in favour. But at best it will force a grovelling acknowledgment that Labour really is all about them, and fuck the rest of the country – at our expense.

    The report said they are recovering in India and have called in independent medical experts as to why toxin was not discovered in the investigation.
    
    If reports are true the meat had not been refrigerated for some time by the people who ate it, perhaps the lab couldn’t isolate which toxin was responsible out of numerous possibilities.

      The friends who cleaned up the house for the affected folk before they returned from hospital found the 30-day old cooked meat. It was not eaten at that stage.
      
      What is still unclear is the condition/treatment of the boar meat when first cooked and eaten.
      We have variously been told that is was fresh wild kill, and later that it meat given to them, and even that it had been in the freezer for some time prior to cooking.

Stay away from the rental market, all you are going to do is cause an increase in rents you fools.

People are already selling up which is causing a shortage in stock. If I owned a rental I would sell now before their socialist agenda kicks in fully.

  In November I was told by an agent to wait until February before looking for housing in Auckland. He stated that landlords were quitting stock, and this would lead to a greater selection at better pricing. So if his analysis was correct then now should be the time for those wanting to start out in the Auckland market to start hunting !!

  Best thing for Landlords would be Labour setting up a ‘Commission’ to approve rental increases.
  Having every new cost rubber stamped by an 18 year old clerk would be fun for all.
  I remember the infamous Price freeze of the 1980’s – the Company I worked for sent in weekly cost increases that justified a price increase. Unfortunately the market was a more effective constraint and we were never able to actually charge the official price approved by Dept of Trade and Industry.

“It’s like déjà vu for Clarksville, to say ‘how can this be happening twice to us,’” the city’s mayor, Kim McMillan, told Reuters.
She said that the city government was scrambling to help the South Korean manufacturer accelerate its production launch by ensuring that utilities and infrastructure are quickly put in place at the factory site and expediting approvals.
“We’ve got to do whatever we can to make sure that LG is able to still open their facility and hire people,” McMillan added. “We don’t want to see a repeat of what happened with Hemlock where they can’t open the plant.”
At stake is an appliance manufacturing complex that could eventually employ thousands of workers and which the state of Tennessee and the local community supported with some $23 million in grants. The 310-acre (1.25 square kilometer) site an hour north of Nashville has room for three additional buildings identical to the plant’s $250 million, 600-job first phase.
Trump’s decision to impose 20 percent to 50 percent tariffs on washer imports and parts has local officials asking what his “America First” stands for: supporting all U.S. manufacturing jobs or just favoring traditional American brands over foreign rivals. Hmmm, Deputy Director of the FBI Andrew McCabe isn’t hanging on until March to collect his full pension rights but has been forced out as of now.

Once director Wray saw the still classified memo held by Congress it appears that McCabe had to go as a safety measure – if he remained in office he could be compelled to testify whereas once retired he can “take the fifth” with relative impunity.

This could also be related to a story that has been revealed that McCabe contacted Rince Priebus when he was CoS at the White House to advise Priebus that a story just released in the NYT about Trump campaign collusion (said to be sourced from anonymous high placed officials) was in fact fake and untrue. Priebus then asked if the FBI could publicly say that the story was false, and McCabe said he would have to check and get back to Priebus. He later called saying that they couldn’t say so in public – and then a new story based on more “anonymous high placed officials” claimed that Priebus had called and pressured the FBI to denounce these stories – which would be unethical and improper. Unfortunately for McCabe records appear to exist of his first call to Priebus initiating the exchange and revealing his part in a conspiracy to commit sedition.

    MCos, however the NYT is very partisan on this issue, and they’re the only outlet saying this was “expected”. Whereas until today the story was that McCabe would retire in March with no mention of leaving early and taking leave until his pension rights accrue.
    
    I do think this is a real development and unexpected despite the NYT’s attempt to pretend otherwise. He did have a potentially significant conflict of interest with his wife’s political campaign taking almost all it’s funding from Clinton loyalists while he was nominally heading the email investigation. He did rescues himself eventually but only in late October/early November way after the investigation had been thoroughly whitewashed. After listening carefully to the excellent radio interview with Eddie Hearn re the upcoming Parker/Joshua fight I believe the fix is in. Parker will win narrowly on points at Cardiff and there will be a rematch at Wembley in the UK summer. Parker will be punched to oblivion. If there is still juice to be squeezed out of the orange provision has been made for a third bout. Enjoy it suckers.

  TBH Digimen1, we shouldn’t be mocking someone with slight speech impediments. This is a bit uncalled for in my opinion, although I must be fair and admit I do find this slightly funny, and smile at the way many satirise her speech. I rationalise this by acknowleging that it is about what she says, rather than how she pronounces it.     I would agree with your general comment about mocking people’s speech, marcw. But to my ear Ms Ardern does not have a “slight speech impediment” in the commonly-accepted sense of that term. Rather, hers is a sloppy speech habit which has become quite common among young New Zealanders of her generation and younger. Perhaps more so among young females?
    
    Their pronunciation of the letter ‘t’ as a ‘d’ is a careless habit, not an affliction incapable of correction through proper application to the task on the part of the speaker herself / himself.

I noted with delight that the fortress of evil that is Lancaster park/Jade Stadium is soon to be demolished.
Given the rampant cheating, vicious acts of violence and outright thuggery that has occurred on that ground in the name of Canterbury rugby its demise is something to celebrate.
The only down side is that the bloody tax payer is being forced to pay for a replacement stadium.

Re-Maorification of geographic names continues, led by the Maori-dominated Geographic Place Names Board.

The latest changes include the northern South Island’s Clarence River, to “Waiau Toa/Clarence River”, and the Waiau River is renamed the Waiau Uwha River.

There were 11 objections to the name changes, made at the request of the South Island’s rich Ngai Tahu tribe.

It will be interesting to see whether bureaucracy and Maori activists can reverse customary use of names. Even whether it will contribute to a reaction against the drive to bring Maori language into more common use.

What was reported as, and is generally still known as, the Geographic Place Names Board, has a recently mangled title of its own: New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa.

The board web site says members are nominated by:

– The Federated Mountain Clubs.
– Ngai Tahu.
– The Minister of Maori Development.
– The Minister for Land Information.
– Local Government NZ.

Present members are:
– Mark Dyer, the Surveyor-General, who is board chairman.
– David Barnes, the mountain club’s nominee, who is a claims executive at ACC.
– Jenni Vernon, nominee of the Land Information Minister. She is a Waikato local body councillor.
– Rikirangi Gage, a member of the Maori TV board. He is the nominee of the Minister of Maori Affairs.
– Michael Roche, a Massey geography professor, nominated by the Geographical Society.
– Matanuku Mahuika, a former president of the Maori Law Society and the chairman of the Ngati Porou company that overseas the tribe’s commercial interests. A nominee of the Minister of Maori Affairs.
– Adam Greenland, the national hydrographer, of LINZ.
– Merata Kawharu, director of the James Henare Māori Research Centre at Auckland University. She is a nominee of the Minister of Land Information.
– Adrienne Staples, a local government politician nominated by Local Government NZ.
– Paulette Tamati-Elliffe, nominated by Ngai Tahu. She has been an activist in promotion of Maori language.

      I was making the point that the names are getting used more often in many cases. I think it will depend on the connections people make. Naming physical features is a pretty political act – it was very much so when the European explorers and colonists named things according to their own sense of ownership and propriety. It is the same now – the balance just swings back a little the other way.

      Aorangi isn’t make much of a dent in the common usage – Mount Cook. “Aorangi” can be useful for firms supplying services to the alpine region when “Mount Cook” is already in use for that type of business. Not much other impact.
      
      There’s a PC push on for use of “Otautahi” instead of Christchurch. It’s making little impact. The full name for the huts on the site of what is now Christchurch was Te Whenua o Te Potiki-Tautahi, later shortened to O Te Potiki Tautahi and then to Otautahi.

China is introducing visas for ethnic Chinese. The applicant only needs to have one parent, grandparent, or ancestor who is or was a Chinese citizen.

According to the South China Morning Post:

Foreigners of Chinese origin will be allowed to apply for visas from this Thursday that permit them to stay in China for five years or enter the country multiple times over that period, provided they meet set criteria.

The criteria seem to entail proof of origin, including copies of the applicant’s or their relatives’ Chinese passports or identity cards.

It isn’t a wine snob thing at all – I find it a little sad when an iconic Kiwi company is acquired by a large multinational and they up their profits by using cheaper products to produce what was a great value product.
