For those who following with horror the energy transition to the unreliables, they will have noted that the advocates use the IEA as their authority. That organisation’s “expertise” isn’t there. Their latest report on batteries show the IEA doesn’t know what it is talking about.
To quote Francis Merton:
“In my self-designated role critiquing various schemes for total transformation of the world energy system, I get to review large amounts of poor, shoddy, and incompetent work. When people get into advocating for this “energy transition,” the stars regularly align to bring forth the most extreme levels of ineptitude. Start with the fact that the “smartest” people are filled with arrogance and hubris, but are not actually very smart. Add that many innumerate Politics and English majors have flooded into a field that cries out for engineering calculations. Add too that groupthink and orthodoxy enforcement prevent anyone from pointing out obvious flaws. And then throw in a strong dose of religious zealotry that obstructs the intrusion of anything resembling critical thinking. All in all, it’s a prescription for catastrophe.

And yes, I know that Francis is a lawyer. But he doesn’t proclaim false expertise. He just talks to and reads engineers, many from industry rather than academics, who do know what they are talking about. Then he writes eloquently about what they prove to him.
Remember that next time you hear some no-nothing proclaim that the wind/solar is the cheapest form of generation and cheap electricity is just around the corner. California and South Australia are the counter-factuals.

        soft tail: Musk has two degrees. One in economics and the other is some sort of teacher’s diploma for teaching physics at school.
        
        No he is not an engineer, but does call himself Chief Engineer of Space X.
        
        He didn’t found Telsa (although they airbrushed the company history to say that he did).
        
        Jealous: nope. I have accomplished sufficient that I don’t need to feel any jealousy.
        
        What is currently happening with Musk looks almost exactly the same as what happened with the other amazing darling of tech: Elizabeth Holmes.

        University credentials matter for the first few years of an engineers career, but you pick up most of what you know and use (and real expertise) for elite technical fields on the job from peers.
        
        Musk is an extremely capable technical engineering leader, and understanding physics to a high level is highly enabling in the fields he deals with. SpaceX came from nowhere to quickly surpass the biggest and oldest and most experienced space launch companies. And also founded the modern EV industry and remains the only profitable EV maker. He no doubt lacks some engineering basics it obviously doesn’t matter in leading engineering teams to get the job done to the highest standards.

        For someone who has acquired a degree you place a lot of emphasis on a tertiary qualification.
        
        The qualification means diddly squad when it comes to innovative, creative and physical outcomes. A tertiary qualification opens a door, but one then needs to walk through the door and your success defines you.
        
        I am glad to hear that you believe that you have been successful in life, that memory provides life satisfaction.
        
        Many very successful people did not need that crutch, good on them.

  Thanks CJ, I always enjoy your posts but due to work commitments i do not get the chance to reply.
  The IEA has been taken over by Climate Change zealots and has changed its own Mandates / policies it was originally set up for.
  I see they have “updated” there Mission statement recently too.

  Like a lot of these “International Organisations” have been captured “Funded” by oblique “Think Tanks” and / or other Nefarious Organisations.
  So this leads us too a broader issue which lays at the heart of a functioning Democracy. Mainly Mis / Dis information and Free Speech.
  An example would be if a NIWA scientist released a statement along the lines of ” Co2 May not be responsible for Climate Change”.
  I am sure there are scientists there who would believe something similar ?
  Would he be cancelled / Told no longer to come back etc ?
  All roads lead to Rome.
  And as a few commentators state ” Follow the Money”.
  Recently the German politicians have overstated the costs of keeping Nuclear Power.

  First difficult question, how to provide electricity for the evening peak in winter, when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind has stopped blowing.
  Second, how to provide electricity in a dry year, when the dams are empty and the wind doesn’t blow much.
  Answers include more geothermal and SMR, if coal and gas are to be banned.
  Any solar or wind installation should have to pay for energy storage, essentially additional generators at existing dams, and likely minimum and maximum flows on rivers will need broadening.
  Onslow is unaffordable, and won’t work as a “battery” with Lake Roxborough having virtually no capacity.

Kiwibank are the latest bank being accused of not doing enough to interrogate their customers as to what they are doing with there money.

“It’s alleged the manager processed the payment without questioning the victim about the nature of the transfer, the legitimacy of the recipient or whether the transaction could be subject to fraud.”

Do we really want to live in a society where the bank questions you as to what you are doing with every financial transaction you make?

How friggin stupid can people be? Sending off $300k to some outfit that they got an email from.

  I see the Banking Ombudsman and a lawyer is involved. I guess we will see the results of the investigations.
  
  Stupid, cmm? Yes, but for many financial literacy is lacking, and first port of call when things go wrong is ‘find someone else to blame’. Still, one would think that personal responsibility still counts for something.

  Someone, or a group of someones were slack at their job.
  Kiwibank once rang me at 4am on a Sunday morning regarding a payment of $6000 from my EFTPOS/DEBIT card account. That account is not an everyday account so I only keep less than $200 in it. So the payment was to an online gambling outfit in New York. I do not do gambling so the Bank quickly cancelled my card.
  Why would I be gambling at 4am in the morning? I thank Kiwibank for that.

    That was a very large transaction, to an account I’d not paid into prior. I expected a phone call or a text at least but nothing.

      The bank may well have checked the transaction and OKd it. Large real estate, vehicles and business transactions happen all the time. Like checked the receiving account was legit, no red or pink flags. Most are legit.

  Reading on nzh about those people who have been scammed out of large of amounts of money and now saying it’s the banks fault. They are very sad stories but I don’t think banks should be made liable for a fraudulent action where they have fulfilled all their obligations from a compliance point of view.
  
  These scammed people were clearly chasing above average returns. Ie a free lunch, when there is none when it comes to investment returns.
  
  When they should have just walked into their local bank and asked for advice on investing large lump sums face to face with people whom they can verify as to their credentials. Goodness knows the FMA has imposed so many restrictions and processes on the banks, the banks can’t possibly quiz every single large transaction.
  
  Alternatively there needs to be more education in schools about safe investing and the fact that if it’s too good to be true, then it is too good to be true.

    Scamee has no money. Scammers are hard to get to.

    Trouble is, we all end up paying for these fuckwits. First through banks being less profitable and second through the financial system becoming increasingly unresponsive and burdened with vast amounts of risk mitigation.

  It was a fraud that all banks had been warned about months prior to this negligent manager assisting the transfer of funds to another Kiwibank mule account.
  People who have no understanding of how financial markets work should not be making these decisions, but neither should a state owned bank be harbouring
  an illegal mule account and assisting transfer of funds into that account.
  It wasn’t just an email there had been a number of phone calls prior to the transfer. Banks know full well that there is a plague of fraudsters targeting their customers, NZ banking is years behind with their slack security it would not be acceptable in any other advanced economy.

And this shows the issues with our justice system, where you get discounts for pleading guilty or because you were raised badly. You still did the crime, why get a reduced sentence if you plead guilty?

The younger Doctor’s lawyer, Jennifer Holden, sought discounts for youth and for his upbringing. Despite that, he showed up in court and had taken responsibility, she said.”

The judge said he had done well to stay out of jail for 10 years. So what, I have stayed out for 5 times that and not looking for any praise…

  I have managed to stay out of court for 77 years and 10 days.
  
  In fact I have only ever been in a court during proceedings twice.
  The first time in Nausori Fiji where I was a witness for the prosecution in a fraud case.
  
  The second time in Gisborne where a workmate and I were sent along to have a look at a defendant in a case because no one at our workplace had seen him face to face. To our embarrassment the prosecutor saw us and asked us to clarify a point he was making. We did so from the public gallery.

      I have sort of rescued a few. More often than not, they run out of fuel! No fuel pumps out by the Mokes so I tow them. Found a bigger boat heading to Whangarei so they took over.

  IMO the Metservice does an excellent job in warning of severe weather. Sure they deal in probabilities. However if, for example, they issue a severe wind warning for a location, severe wind almost always happens.
  
  Have you evidence that that the metservice habitually exaggerates the threat of severe weather in its forecasts?

      Can you point to any time the Metservice has drawn such a link in issuing its severe weather warnings? I have not seen any. All their weather warnings are purely factual, and at least so far, written entirely in the English language.

Regarding banks scams: ‘the bank is missing obvious red flags’….how about the plonkers who are getting scammed? The romance scams work the same as these finance scams…..gullible people being taken in by scenarios that seem ‘too good to be true’ but they plow on regardless because they have a psychological flaw that the scammer can exploit. I come back to an example I read where a couple demanded the bank staffer send through the money – “or we will miss this opportunity” – despite her warnings, then eventually stormed off to another banks branch in high dudgeon only to have it confirmed there that the account they wanted to send it to was a scammers account. Some people need saving from themselves because they are stupid / gullible / reckless but putting the responsibility / blame on the banks all the time is totally disingenuous.

Clearly what we have in the hopefully soon to be renamed back to Housing New Zealand is broken.

Why must law abiding, decent people be subject to scumbags?

I think one of the things that is broken is that under the law HNZ is treated as a landlord and must act through the Tenancy Tribunal (if the wusses even choose to do so).

Clearly a first step in the right direction is for them to actually start to use what tools they have on scumbags (ie. the Tenancy Tribunal) to evict.

But HNZ is not a normal tenant/landlord situation any more than Corrections is a hotel. HNZ have to deal with scum that normal landlords could turn away. I think therefore they should operate under a different framework and not be subject to the Tenancy Tribunal.

Still, they could do a lot better with the broken tools they have.

  If the Tenancy Tribunal is part of the problem in getting rid of this tenant (and it is), then why should it only be a problem for private landlords but not Kainga Ora?
  
  Making the government suffer the embarrassment and cost that results from being subject to their own tenancy rules is important. Then they are incentivised to fix the rules for all of us.

    It costs them nothing. It all comes out of our pockets.
    
    There is a difference in that HNZ does not really get to choose who they deal with. If they evict a tenant they are required to find alternative accomodations (or so it seems).
    
    This means they are forced to deal with people that regular landlords could turn away.
    
    BY had some insider’s knowledge and says that a third of tenants are good. I would suspect that in normal tenancy situations, most tenants are good.
    
    Therefore HNZ has a different set of problems to deal with. Trying to use the same tools to deal with both situations seems problematic.

        I think he’s taking about everything the government says or does being examined critically rather than criticising everything.
        
        The problem with “you and your mates” – and nearly everyone else I know “and their mates” – is that most lack an interest in, or ability to think critically. Examples like why would Polly’s say that a vaccine is safe or puberty blockers are safe when anyone with half a brain can see that no quality long term studies can possibly have been carried out. Reducing speed limits because “speed kills” without questioning whether changing the law will change the results or just punish those going 5kmh over the limit. Seeing that allowing men to participate in women’s sport, which they blindly support, has long term implications of (probably) less women participating which affects a much larger % of the population.   A couple of observations.
  
  Firstly Not all state housing tenants are scum. About one third are excellent tenants and another third have only occasional problems.
  
  Secondly, the Tenancy Tribunal is well-equipped to deal with terrible tenants. Kàinga Ora was prohibited by the last government from seeking eviction orders. That has now changed. If Kàinga Ora fails to act, Chris Bishop should be all over them.

        I was grateful for the car drivers that stopped at the pedestrian crossing this morning because the alternative would have been instant death!
        Last year in Onehunga I was approached some green lights in my automobile. I was entitled to the right of way, but a chap on a motorcycle was holding up the traffic while his mates went through the red light.
        They were wearing gang patches so I did my civic duty and forfeited my entitlement because the alternative would have been instant death.

      Last year I fell over through nobody else’s fault, but my own and bust a leg. I had to wait three days in A & E to have it repaired presumably because they were lacking resources to get on to it straight away.
      A lot of people who wait around like that grizzle and grump about the delay.
      Well. Maybe if I’d been more careful I wouldn’t have gone through all that trauma
      A lot of people get taxpayer assistance one way or another. NZ Superannuation, motorways, police assistance . . . . . prison time!

      Probably 98% of these tenants are grateful for the assistance they get from taxpayers.
      Even these 98% are entitled to complain about bad service. (I have met state housing employees and tenants … most are caring others are … best avoided)
      
      Maybe we should match up the 2%ers and create a secondary system. If the bad tenants look after their government provided prefab and demonstrate they have rehabilitated they can be considered for an upgrade.
      
      Something like small footprint low cost government housing estates where government can deploy wrap around services within “confined security” areas.

  Although this comment is about what happened in the UK I believe it’s moral may be of some assistance here in formulating policy around state housing tenants.
  In 1953 my father and mother applied for what is known there as a council house that is a house provided by the local authority rather than the state but it amounted to the same thing. They had to undergo a rigorous interview and vetting process that included references from employers, one essentially current , my fathers military discharge status and have a clean criminal record. That put them on the waiting list. They received their new home and considered themselves blessed. It had two toilets, upstairs and down, a front and back garden a single garage 3 bedrooms kitchen and living room and was theirs if they stuck to the rules for the rest of their lives. They brought up six kids in it. The estate was a fantastic crime free place where everyone looked out for each other’s kids and there was zero burglaries or car breaking. A real community. In the late 70s the Labour government over rode the local authorities and enforced tenancy by need which essentially meant house anyone that presented without a roof over their head. The results were almost immediate as one or two houses became occupied by long term beneficiaries and drop kicks whose kids roamed the estate after dark breaking into sheds and cars of the working people and took their things. The local shops were broken into, well you get the picture. One house was broken into Christmas Eve and all the presents stolen. People who could moved out and more shit bags moved in , the ones who couldn’t get private rentals and the whole estate spiraled into a crime ridden shit hole where you were afraid to walk the streets and old people such as my parents kept their doors locked during the day. Labour, the socialist ideological revolutionaries had succeeded once again in the equal distribution of misery by pulling everyone down. But in their minds it was now fair and equatable. Of course they lived in the private houses on the other side of town.

      Yes, as I have commented on here before I spent the first 10 years of life living in a state house in both Auckland and Wellington.
      My father worked for a government department and in those days the requirement was to be shifted around the country in order to progress up the pay scale and seniority ladder.
      “Stateys” (aka government houses) were made available to these workers to make the shift easier.
      The houses were ok – just basic two bedroom wooden boxes – but we would not have dreamed of vandalising it or getting off side with any neighbours – not when the parent’s job status and prospects could have been impacted.

Mortality Data.

We are continually told the covid response saved lives but still the data is opaque and or missing.

2019 was a high year for deaths (+1171), Then in 2020 it dropped (-1704)

Why did it drop in 2020.
Cancer actually increased (+328)
Ischaemic Heart disease (-374)
Stroke (-199)
Other Heart disease (-41)
Chronic Lower Respiratory (-386)
Diabetes (-40)
Flu/Pneumonia (-430)
Covid (+25)
Motor Vehicle , Suicide, and Assault – (No data given for 2020-)

So major drop in flu respiratory deaths. But we had a problem with cancer.

But we don’t get the full data. The total # of the deaths in 2020, was 32783, but they only give an explanation for 21344 deaths. This is similar to only partial explanation in other years.

Furthermore they don’t give the data for 2020 onwards for Accidents and Assaults. 2019 deaths were Motorvehicle (397) suicide (675) and assault (124)
But for 2020 onwards it is withheld from the Mortality Web tool. How can this data not be available 4 years on.

The website does give more detailed 2021 only data in a full data set which tells us “All external causes of morbidity and mortality ” was 2221. That is double the number of MotorV, Suicide, Assualt deaths (1,196) in 2019.

Why do we not have proper and full data on mortality in NZ!? Why is it only 2/3 of the deaths explained? Especially when the last govt’s biggest claim for breaching our human rights was they are saving lives.

      Perhaps not Ghost but my son also has sleep apnoea and sleeps on a ventilator every night. He spends 2.5 hrs commuting daily to his 8-10 hr a day job as an electrical engineer in NYC. In his spare time he is a master PADI diver and instructor. After working in WA mines he is a fully qualified fireman incl oil rig fires. He still holds every driving licence. He loves technology and became a card carrying Microsoft technician at 16. He loves to ski and surf.
      My son’s father was the same age as Mataaz is now, 46, when he died of bowel cancer.
      If I’m honest, I think Mataaz and his family are having us on.

      Immigration NZ then says it has input including these factors: department policy, credibility, settlement, security, immigration risk, and health.
      
      So it’s the UN that chooses mostly Muslim refugees for NZ.

      Family member had a refugee family move next door – very close to boundary where bedroom located.
      One of them could speak some English.
      One had a job – night shift.
      They kept to themselves except when all their fellow refugee/immigrant friends came round with cars, motor bikes, musical instruments, sound systems and loud voices to dance the night away outside family member’s bedroom window.
      Also included were bouts of car maintenance.
      No attempt was made AFAIK by the local worthies (who were supposed to be looking out for them) to ask them have some consideration for the neighbours.

  That family is from Syria where a civil war has been going on since 2011.
  I ran into a Syrian refugee around 2016. He was delivering windows to a building site I was working on. He told me he loved Syria, it was a beautiful country and he had a house and a business, but he lived in a rebel area. One day the government army came along and destroyed everything and he had to do a runner and eventually came to NZ

British Conservatives are talking about “re-industrialisation” as the path forward for Britain.

The suggestion is made in a report by: Michael Gove, a Cabinet Minister under four Conservative PM’s; Nick Timothy, a former chief of staff to PM Theresa May; and Gavin Rice, of the Conservative think tank, Onward.

They argue that the “existing economic model” is bust.

In an article in the “Telegraph,” Nick Timothy writes:

“Like in many other Western countries, our growth is sluggish, and wages stagnant. Our birth rate is declining, and immigration is rocketing. Investment is low and productivity is poor. We have trade and budget deficits and a large stock of debt. Our exposure to the bond markets means there are no easy shortcuts, so tax cuts without big spending cuts, or debt-fuelled spending sprees, are off the table …

” … We cannot go on consuming and importing more than we produce and export. ”

Timothy also argues the UK needs to end addiction to low-skill, low-paid immigration, and return annual net migration numbers to the tens of thousands.

  Re-industrialisation is a challenge for many reasons.
  
  One of those is that people are addicted to cheap imported goods. Reindustrialisation requires consumers switching back to locally manufactured goods and be prepared to pay for them.
  
  Everyone wants to “Buy American” until they see the price tag.
  
  The use of import duties can tilt the playing field in favour of local industries but it drives consumer costs up. Not generally popular. Again, everyone wants their job protected, but not everyone else’s.
  
  I am not sure there’s really a solution here.

    Local car, whiteware, electronic manufacturing and farming was heavily subsidized.

      On the flip side, TV was probably also worth watching.
      
      But yes, protectionism is a problem – doubly so in a very small country like NZ.
      
      Taking your TV example, you can’t build modern TVs using the old low-cost methods of the 1970s and 1980s when most electronics was built by hand. To build modern electronics requires a lot of very expensive machinery – far more than can be justified for building a few TV sets.
      
      That means one of:
      * TVs costing $5000 each to pay for the fancy equipment.
      * TVs costing $2k each, but still built using old methods so you have blurry old 1980s TVs in the 2020s.
      * Pay the penalties and import because that’s still the bet deal.

        I heard an interview with a guy who headed up such a plant and he said it cost more to import the components than it would have cost to import finished sets, which couldn’t be done due to a need to protect jobs

    still govt subsidised and cheap crap. A cheap Chinese computer controlled laser engraver that I have used is not fit for purpose, it’s replacement American made model at twice the price is working perfectly and is really 10x times better.

  Back when they had industry it tended to be poorly run, use antiquated plant and turn out ratshit product. Industrial relations sucked too.
  
  They had no decent pathway to train skilled workers either – the educationalists were all for teaching people about the Classics.
  
  It led to the crappy English cars we drove for all them years. The 1960’s motorbikes built with 1930’s bits. Fabric covered aeroplanes when the rest of the world had metal ones.
  
  It’s hard to know what they could actually make to “re-industrialise”. The world has moved on since the 1950’s

    The only thing that keeps industries like military supplies going are the massive margins and incentives to keep local production going for strategic reasons.
    
    That is only “susbtainable” because the government contracts keep paying hundreds of thousands for missiles based on 1980s technology that should really be a tenth of the price they are.

By this point unions had morphed from an incredibly effective tool to help the working class to political entities mostly controlled by Marxists aspiring to the Russian model of communism. I remember the discussions complaining about the union reps all calling each other comrade and organising repeated strikes for political reasons. God help you if you spoke out against them. Expect to have your car tyres slashed.
    
    Net result poor quality and expensive manufacturing in Liverpool that disappeared over 20 years as industry fled the region.
    
    Reminds me of the old joke.

    I didn’t realise that Rolls Royce aero engines with their full order books are crap and that they are ‘not training aero apprentices’ . It’s also strange that they now are known for producing the ‘world’s most reliable jet engine’ at the moment.
    I also read that they are making a very popular small nuclear plant, and that their share price has recently ‘gone through the roof’.
    JCB engineering must with their full order books must be telling lies about their ever increasing profits, and apprenticeship scheme. We have some of their machines working on Wgtn to Hutt cycle way, to my untrained eye they look quite good at what they are doing.
    The ‘paper covered wings’all Aerobus planes seem to be holding up quite well considering your claims.
    If you leave your house and walk to the shops you will see many cars which are still made in UK.

So, it appears that the Biden administration may have been responsible for shipping classified information to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida. This development is significant because Trump has previously blamed the GSA for packing the boxes that contained the classified documents, only to later accuse Trump of essentially stealing them and using that as pretext for sending the FBI to raid his Mar-a-Lago home in August 2022.

We visited the above museum, and for those who have not already done so I cannot recommend it highly enough.
It is an extraordinary place, with an immense collection of displays, artifacts, photos , exhibits , models and every imaginable item related to life in “old” NZ.
Best you allocate a couple of days to do it justice !
The Dargaville Museum is another excellent place for those interested in our history.
The hardships some of our forebears endured, the immense physical demands of early colonial life, quite remarkable.

        Mike makes a good point, what if they do jump out in front of you, which is common. Our old postie broke her collarbone when a car backed out a drive as she was going by and got hit. Our neighbours daughter is constantly going up and down the footpath on her scooter, someone backing out could easily miss seeing her as she suddenly appears behind you. Sometimes accidents happen, people don’t see the child suddenly appear behind the vehicle on the drive.

Sad to read of the young man being killed by a head injury while playing rugby.

My son was knocked out cold in about 2011 in a similar event – his head also being hit by another player’s knee.

In my son’s case things were a lot better because he was a goalkeeper and wearing a goalkeeper’s helmet. Even so, he had to give up university for the best part of a year and it took him many years to recover from the concussion.

Head injuries are a bastard and are woefully underestimated.

My condolences to the family.

        If you were even faintly acquainted with the NZ Curriculum, you would realise it is hopeless load of generalised verbiage.
        
        It has meant that Children who frequently change schools miss out complete chunks of knowledge…as the Levels of a subject do not correspond 1:1 with a year level. Hence one school could start introducing a concept in maths to a child at the start of year 5 and another school at the end of year 6. ( Level 3 Maths)
        
        It is also possible for teachers to omit whole chunks of the curriculum when they block a Science subject into a “context”…. So for one term a pupil might be focused on a Biology/Living earth theme, another term on some aspect of the Physical world/ or Material world…and repeat the following year.
        
        Somehow Plant Earth /or the Astronomy theme gets missed …. or the theme that the teacher knows nothing about.
        
        In recent reviews of Primary schools it has been shown that only about 50% of them are doing a good(thorough) job of teaching Science.

  There was anouncement around maori education too.
  
  I’ve been thinking about this for a bit, and have come to the conclusion that Maori should be given co-governance over their schooling.
  
  They can build their own schools, hire maori teachers , and have an entirely maori curriculum.
  
  This will enable other schools to thrive, as they will be able to ditch the woke stuff and finally concentrate on teaching english, maths, and science .

    An “entirely Maori curriculum”? And what happens to these people when they then leave school barely literate? How do they function, much less find meaningful employment, in what will always be an Anglophone country? (At least until China takes over. Either way no one will be speaking Maori to any meaningful extent). You’ll create a whole new generation of a mediocre underclass, thus continuing the cycle of victimology and grievance culture etc. Maorification doesn’t work for anyone – least of all Maori.

The lefty stupidity continues , 15 year old son doing an economics essay now has to make it more maori by changing some words into te reo. His first idea was to just hand in 2 versions , 1 put through google translate. A part maori boy in the class said to the teacher that google will get it wrong and the marking criteria just wants some words changed like : woman , school , first and the likes. This is crazy shit.

  In my day, all schoolwork was relevant and there were no irrelevant aspects to be included for any assessment whatsoever. In history, for example, we needed to know common German words for people, empire, living space, and inferior persons.

    For example, on the TVNZ poll of 1000 folk “Labour could form a coalition with the Greens and Te Pati Maori”.
    
    And the daily report platform for Hipkins. It’s unusual, even unprecedented, for the leader of a defeated NZ government to get daily coverage on State TV.

The latest poll just shows what an ongoing disaster for our democracy the ‘Maori electorates’ are. FPP was criticised for allowing one of the major parties to get less of the popular vote than their rival, yet still win a couple of elections. That was a driver for the push to proportional representation, which gave us MMP. Soon we will the Left bloc get less of the popular vote than the Right, and it will be due to the ludicrous Maori electorates.

You’d think they were on the verge of taking the reins next month! And I wonder how many people in the street were interviewed saying they think the coalition is doing well but the footage was binned.
