  I use UBER all of the time.
  Only once gave a driver a poor review – because he refused to turn on his air-conditioning and had all the windows locked.
  I actually got a nice response from UBER.
  
  Half the price of taxis, no need to worry about cash/mucking around with payment, in and out easily and always a car available within 5 mins.

    I have found uber very average late in the night. Drivers are busy cancel at the drop of a hat and the rates are the same as a taxi.

    Your post prompted me to look at circulation stats for Newspapers ? and Magazines. Overall Magazines have declined, some significantly and those stable or increasing ones demonstrate what their readers actually value to pay for them. News papers generally were in decline though some regional ones showed increases which means there is still interest in local news. The message for the mainstream ones appears to be keep misreporting your opinions as facts and fail to ensure spelling and grammar are correct and the evident loss of trust in you product will continue to decline into closure through circulation and advertising revenue loss. Bankruptcy occurs slowly at first and then all of sudden!

So Susan Burdett had a bad night, she was raped by Malcolm Rewa as her son drove from Whangerei to kill her for insurance all within about 20 minutes of her arriving home.

The point here is the disgusting gamesmanship the system requires lawyers to engage in to get to a verdict. I don’t criticise Paul Chambers for this but I hold the judiciary in deep contempt for sanctioning this nonsense. We saw the same in Lundy and Ewan MacDonald.

The world needs to grow up and drive straight for the truth in these vile murders.

Google – Light Rail capacity
90 passengers per vehicle * 3 vehicles per train * 15 vehicle sets per hour = 4,050 passengers per hour.

So, 11,000 commuters an hour would be 122 vehicles, or 40 trains per hour on each line?
Up and down Dominion Road?
And, similar to the phenomena of 200+ working committees now needing a little time to report back – like, unload – Light Rail vehicles, 122 per line, will need to stop long enough either end or en route for 11,000 passengers an hour to get on and off, perhaps in occasional torrential Auckland rain.

Well, that’s Light Rail well on the way to suffering a Kiwibuild demise
Why doesn’t Jacinda get her shit together and do a re-shuffle now –
leave Twyford to fix his Monopoly house problems and appoint someone else to screw up Light Rail?

Yesterday it appeared that Labour MP’s were late for a Select Committee meeting and National MP’s walked away resulting in the meeting being cancelled. It is apparent that if the National MP’s had waited a bit longer the meeting would have got underway although a bit late. It seemed fair enough that National MP’s should stage a protest to make the point that Labour MP’s could not just waltz in when they felt like it.

However the purpose of the meeting was to hear from submitters of 15 submissions. They had put the time and effort in preparing the submissions then travelled to Parliament (perhaps some a long distance) only to find the meeting had been called off. It was unfair that these submitters were unnecessarily inconvenienced by National’s protest action. The National MP’s should have recognised this and done what they could to help get the meeting underway, in this case by waiting another five to ten minutes. They should have marked their displeasure in some other way, for example targeting a meeting where no submitters would be present. Such behaviour might not be unexpected from Labour MP’s but surely National MP’s can behave better than this.

    For the sake of the submitters. They are the guests of Parliament, invited to assist with the functioning of Parliament. In return they deserve to be treated with due respect and dignity, and not regarded as lobbyists or other lower forms of life. It is incumbent on all MP’s to work together to ensure invited guests of Parliament are appropriately treated.
    In this instance, although Labour MP’s were negligent with their attendance, it was National MP’s who deliberately took action resulting in the meeting failing to convene leaving the submitters high and dry. They should have known better.

    Another reason – “the overarching objective of a political party is to get into power and if in power stay in power”. There should be a flashing neon sign saying this in Nats caucus room to help keep them focussed. They were not focussed when planning their little protest – If I were one of the submitters submitters and a Nat member I would seriously consider chucking the membership renewal in the bin and advising my mates to do likewise.       If I can get out of bed in time to make an appointment then I expect that they should particularity as they set the time and once there one usually waits half a day for the lazy arses to give you your say. A say which generally they ignore.

Have they whitewashed (?) his dodgy past? His previous job as a self-claimed “comedian” was peppered with controversy, and his ugly style revealed his derogatory aggressive and abusive nature for all to see. He was guest speaker at a function I attended a few years back, and his foul spiel was so racist and sexist to the point where people were groaning, interjecting complaints, and some members of the audience got up and left the room. (Edit – and I’m no snowflake or prude).

If he is NZer of the Year, the bar must be set so low the award is worthless.

Conference attendees’ employers pay fancy prices for them to attend such conferences promising commercial benefits, networking opportunities, etc. Organisers can also get sponsorships. Organising such conferences can be quite profitable.

    Few weeks ago at the annual Waihopai spy base protest, Marama Davidson and a few others of the Green cult held up signs declaring that the “Don’s domes” at the base were “working for Trump” – as though this was a bad thing.

However credit where credits due, they have been working on the Mental Health system and have already achieved stunning results.
In 2017 7 out of 100 voters supported NZF.
By 2018 they’d reduced the illness to 5 out of 100 voters and by January 2019 to little more than 2 out of 100 voters.

  Musculature, stature, heart and lung capacity and even social conditioning don’t seem to matter.

    One: denial of diplomatic implication by The Prinzess herself. Bullshit. You don’t dispatch a Dreamliner without authorization from the receiving aviation authority between International Terminals. This is international practice since 9/11 when some commenters here were in Grade school. Fact.
    Five hours until the Dreamliner was given the order to turn around. That was a big window. Ninety minutes would have sufficed.
    Once the administrative error was flogged to death, the parties involved have another layer to resort to. That China is flexing its muscle and enforcing incoming flight path documents to scratch any references to Taiwan that could be taken as foreign countries viewing Taiwan as an Independent State. Convoluted to say the least. This has been picked up on by the Enquirer and the Guardian.

I am assuming that National would vote against it at its first reading, maybe due in the House next week, but have seen no media reports.

  Good morning.
  As you will be aware, on 31 October last year, the Canterbury Regional Council announced its intention to promote a Local Bill that would authorise Ngai Tahu to appoint its own two members to ECan as from the 2019 Local Body Elections, these in addition to the 14 elected members and with the same status as elected members.
  Democracy Matters (Canterbury) was formed as a means of co-ordinating resistance to this move. Many of you who are receiving this message wrote to ECan expressing your opposition to the Bill, and many signed our initial petition calling on ECan to drop the Bill. The campaign to pressure ECan to drop the Bill was short-lived however, because on 30 November, the Bill was introduced to the House thus effectively taking the future of Canterbury’s democracy out of our hands and making it, as I observed at the time, the “plaything of politicians in Wellington”.
  
  Bill withdrawn?
  In the week before Christmas, I was advised via Jacqui Dean’s office that the Bill had been withdrawn. This was confirmed via a reliable source in NZ First. I then advised our Canterbury supporters to that effect and issued a media statement.
  On 24 December, the situation became confused. Paul Gorman of the Christchurch Press contacted me to enquire as to the reliability of my information. He then contacted Rino Tirikatene who is sponsoring the Bill in the House. Mr Tirikatene confirmed that the Bill had been withdrawn, but added that he intended re-submitting it in the New Year. When Paul Gorman got back to me with this news, I told him that Mr Tirikatene was obviously unaware of Note 3 to the Parliamentary Timetable for the Bill where it is made clear that, if a Bill is withdrawn, the whole process of presenting it to the House has to start again from scratch. By the time Paul Gorman got to share this news with Mr Tirikatene, he had obviously found it out himself, for he now said that the Bill had not been withdrawn; it was being “postponed”. It seems he had got away with withdrawing it and then slipping it back in and “postponing” it.
  Given that this all occurred on Christmas Eve, I chose not to bother you with this tale of confusion, preferring to wait till the MPs came back from their Summer break when it might be possible to pin down what was actually going on.
  
  Clarity at last
  Last Monday, I met with the last of three National MPs with whom I have discussed this Bill – Michael Woodhouse, Jacqui Dean and Andrew Falloon. One of our supporters has a meeting booked with Gerry Brownlee for 22 February.
  The Bill is clearly still before the House and likely to have its First Reading some time around 19 February. With NZ First having declared that they will oppose the Bill, its future will be decided by the way the National Caucus decides to vote. Thus far, National have not made their intentions public in that regard.
  The discussions I have had make it clear that National see serious difficulties with the Bill as it stands, but whether they decide to vote it down at the First Reading or to allow it to proceed to the Select Committee stage remains to be seen.
  If the Bill gets to the Select Committee stage, it will be important to have as many submissions made to it as possible. Select Committee hearings could be held in Canterbury so as to enable Canterbury people to appear in person.
  We would, however, be greatly relieved if the Bill were defeated at the First Reading.
  
  What we can do right now
  The best thing we can all do right now to encourage a First Reading defeat is to write to a National MP urging him/her to ensure that the Bill does not proceed past its First Reading.

  Amy Adams (Selwyn) amy.adams@parliament.govt.nz
  Andrew Falloon (Rangitata) andrew.falloon@parliament.govt.nz

  The sort of things you might mention are::
  As a resident in your (Waitaki) electorate, I am writing to urge you to oppose the ECan Ngai Tahu Representation Bill at its First Reading in the near future.
  This Bill, if passed, will undermine the essential principles of our democracy:
  1. that all members of any level of government with the authority to raise money from residents must be elected by them
  2. that, as required by the Local Electoral Act (2001) the population that each member of a local authority represents must be similar and within a defined range
  3. that all residents have the same level of representation; this Bill would allow people of Ngai Tahu descent double representation (by their elected representative and by their iwi’s appointees)
  A Bill that would establish two standards of citizenship cannot do other than create division and disharmony. I therefore urge you to vote to ensure its defeat at the first opportunity.
  
  It will take a lot more effort to defeat this Bill if it gets to the Select Committee stage than if it can be stopped at the First Reading so please send a message to your electorate MP NOW!!!!! And also, please send this communication on to any family or friends in Canterbury who would share our concerns.
  
  I shall report to you further following the First Reading of the Bill or if there are developments prior to that.

Labour of course has set up a record number of working groups/committees to look into all sorts of things but are any looking into why sections of our motorways have taken so long to complete. Case in point, the Northwestern or 16 around Henderson in AKL, has been under construction for 17 YEARS now. Same with the road from AKL to Hamilton. While obviously a much longer piece than the Henderson section — 17+ YEARS still makes no sense. What other country takes this long to complete something like this? China would have had it done in weeks. I’m surprised there hasn’t been a proper non-political investigation as to why? Or make it political — any party that takes that on, promising a comprehensive review into the ‘hows and whys’ (and it would span all parties in government over the last two decades) would get votes. There must be some serious issues going on for this to be dragged out over 2 decades and have no end in sight still.

  The Waikato Expressway has taken 17 odd years because it has been done in logical sections.
  
  This is because the government doesn’t have the BILLIONS required to build it all at once, nor is there a contractor large enough to complete such a build in one go.
  
  Ditto SH16/20, because while shorter, it’s part of an existing, highly complicated network.
  
  I’ve worked on sections of both Highways from the designer side.

    Yesterday we drove through from Waihi to Tauranga and back over the Kaimai. The cancelled Katikati – Tauranga motorway is long overdue and a serious delay should be extended through to Waihi. Also in desperate need is the extremely busy and somewhat difficult to negotiate rough road down the Waikato side of the Kaimais. The Cambridge motorway section needs to be extended through to Tauranga.

I think we, or I at least do often forget NZ is the size of one small to medium size State in the USA, yet without the help of the Federal gov to help fund these things. That said, there must be some efficiencies in there somewhere. Or maybe lessons from overseas? 17 years on the Henderson bit seems excessive even for little NZ.   How about the never-ending Takanini widening of SH1. Process of adding a lane over 4.5km in a flat low-development suburban/rural area has taken 4 years now with another year to go. Absolutely incredible slowness – vast safety works 1000’s of cones and fuck all work ever in progress. Most bizarre thing is addition of a cycle lane connecting Manurewa to rural South Auckland – talk about worthless infrastructure spend. (Though the Greens are trying to do worse)

    Alaska. After the earthquake last Nov, that off ramp to Anchorage Airport was repaired, sealed and roadmarked in 72 hours. Temporary repair yes, and will have to be done again in summer. But 72 hours?
    Here in NZ the same job would take 3 to 5 years.

    We are not unique. Australia has vast areas of expansive soils just like NZ, UK as well. It is common enough the world over.
    Googling: $268million for Takanini work. $30million per lane km, 3-4x that US price above. Was supposed to be finished in 2018, but now won’t be done until Dec 2019 (lets be honest 2020). Fucking ridiculous. Suspect ost of blame goes with insanely slow work rate created by ridiculously over the top safety end environmental practices (noise, dust, runoff etc) that hugely draw out length of the project and massively elevate overhead costs.
    
    The 5-10minutes extra it has been costing 50000 cars per day amounts to about a million wasted hours per year – about 25 human lifetimes worth of ‘free’ time over the length of the project.

In late 2016 Phil Goff opened up a massive over supply of land to the Auckland region and sections can now be freely developed around every town in the region (except Auckland City, because building close to a city is bad m’kay or something). As a result of the huge over supply of land prices are now declining in Auckland and the city is sprawling outwards twice as fast as it ever has before (because building close to a city is bad m’kay?).

So my question for the day – with Phil Goff building the biggest urban sprawl NZ has ever seen – why does our government think Auckland’s biggest transport challenge is a tram line to the airport?

    Ardern’s problem is also inside her government, because of the accord she struck with the Greens, the Transport Blog, MR Cagney and JAG’s Auckland Council/Transport friends.
    The problem is JAG and her friends at Auckland Council/Transport, the Transport Blog and others assured Ardern the tram project was near ready to go. It wasn’t and still isn’t. NZTA are having to rewrite a business case for a project that doesn’t hold water.
    Now, the SLG and friends have 3 new problems:
    1. Her credibility is eroded further;
    2. She will have problems with the Greens inside her government; and
    3. She is taking money from Aucklanders in the fuel tax for nothing.
    Then there is Twitford and his problems:
    1. He has another failure on his hands;
    2. He was the fool who kept saying Auckland had transport problems and needed this silly project;
    3. He was the fool who gave the soundbite that “Auckland transport is a basket case” – not true by the way;
    4. He is responsible for the fuel tax; and
    5. On Monday, he was telling the road/infrastructure construction industry the government had a bigger pipeline of work planned than the last government….hollow words.
    So, Ardern is not only a liar, but she breaks her promises.
    And to paraphrase the Darleks….
    Twitford will have to….”recalibrate, recalibrate, recalibrate……”

Why was she white? Why wasn’t one indian, chinese or Maori? Why didn’t one have a disability. Why wasn’t one a vegetarian.         Which they done so, quite successfully, now whoever was doing that ad should have taken that into consideration when constructing it.

    What do you think the coalition should we do MMA? I agree China are a problem, pretty much a regime of evil despots with no moral or ethical standards, but they also have the power to wreck our economy on a near-whim. We can’t afford to be too principled in our dealings with them.
    
    But I don’t think Winston and Jacinda have done a good job with their ham-fisted inability to be circumspect when questioned about China related matters. Jacinda because she isn’t up to it intellectually in considering her words when asked to comment, and Winston because he is a fractious curmudgeonly dick with failing faculties who doesn’t care what others think. TVNZ bosses aren’t ruling out looking at buying a stake in Stuff or merging with Radio NZ.

But neither TVNZ board chairwoman Dame Therese Walsh nor TVNZ chief executive Kevin Kenrick talked up either possibility when they appeared before Parliament’s Economic Development, Science and Innovation Committee today.

Made a loiusy 5.1 mill for all the m0ney invested and that’s with NZ on air pouring in the cash.

Better if we sold it to Stuff and they could pal up and go broke together. Appallling people both of them.

Yesterday we made the trek from the Bombay Hills to Puhoi, the truly awful part of the drive to the Far North. Mrs Nasska has pointed out on past trips that new subdivisions in the City of Orcs share the sameness of architecture & colour as Coronation Street.

Instance the relatively new suburbs of Oteha & Silverdale. As far as the eye can see there’s row upon row of houses with grey roofs. Not one other colour to break the monotony.

What’s with the grey? Is red or green unacceptable?

  Given the vast expense tied up in Auckland property these days, there is extreme conservatism in looks. Also a lot of covenants on subdivisions (don’t want to drag down prices of neighbours), coupled with highly proscriptive building regulations that are as finicky as eg dealing with how much your garage door dominates roadside view and dictating 100’s of other minor details. All of which restricts choices a lot. Add to that sky high cost of labour and consenting and you end up with many developers using same designs again and again to save bucks.

Gayford, who had been quiet on Twitter since November, posted on the social network this afternoon that, for Valentine’s Day, he received a load of plain white bread.

      Though I say it myself I can put down a mean hangi. The way I was taught involved cooking the stones in a couple of 44 gallon drums, then tipping them out onto the ground. Then it’s relatively easy to rake out any bits of wood which give the smoked taste no one wants.
      
      No hole involved. Baskets of tucker set on stones covered with old sheets then covered with 200/300mm of soil.
      
      Similar to the way islanders put down an umu. The Maori used similar in the central NI where sulphur in the soil imparted a taste to the food.

      Yes, I didn’t have much problem with the concept of Housing NZ selling and subdividing existing properties to invest in new rental stock. By definition, an ex-state rental should be at the affordable end of the market – had that market not been grossly distorted by letting in too many immigrants over the last thirty years.

      Yeah Nasska, we got one of those in 1974 after they removed the covenant and opened it up to anybody. Double income, no kids, in you go folks.
      The result was we got a dodgy little townhouse which later leaked, paid twice what a decent place would have cost a couple of years prior and the builder smacked his lips and retired to the Gold Coast.

        It was the early 70s I was thinking about Captain. I’ve no doubt whatsoever that there were a few dodgy builders who didn’t stick around.
        
        But most of the houses I remember, of the era, were basic three bedroom boxes. Beazleys, Keith Hay…..you’ll probably recall others, were the builders & the materials used were okay. At least 50yrs later there’s not much gone wrong with them which is more than you can say for the leaky pieces of shit constructed 15-30 years ago.
        
        Universal Smith above has observed that there would be too few honest, pragmatic MPs of any party who would push for the same policies now.

  It’s hard to say, but giving the Chinese government access to our telecoms networks might be a step too far for AUSCA(NZ)UKUS.
  The US were prepared to keep us in our most important defence links (intelligence and science) in the 1980s despite our anti-nuclear nonsense.
  Our close allies might be a trifle disconcerted by National and Labour both selling out so openly to Beijing, but they would have to draw the line at us conniving in Chinese access so obviously through Huawei installing itself as guardian of all our data..

  Isn’t part of the problem the lack of companies able to offer 5G as good as Huawei?
  Perhaps they really should have deferred the Tender untill there was more choice.
  Be too obvious now though.
  The only way I can see really is to take the Chinese up on the offer to inspect the equipment and let our more qualified 5 eyes partners do that.
  There’s no doubt however that Peters and Ardern have miscalculated how big a problem this would become.
