The TV1 poll was pretty much the same as the TV3 one, and I think these polls reflect the high point of the CoL.
Consider this:
1. NZF is history.
2. The Greens in elections never get more than two thirds of the support the polls give them. Therefore they are good for 4% at best.
3. The holiday stardust has gone, and reality is really going to set in this year regarding Labour’s lying, obfuscation and general incompetence.
4. Their tax policy is going to rub salt into the wound, the economy will tank and the Sroubek affair won’t go away.
It will be a National vs Labour race and at 42% National is coming from a position of strength against a failing Government.
Bridges will be replaced in late 2019 and there will be no stopping them.

  I honestly believe that if an Election was held tomorrow the Nats would come very close to Governing alone.

    The real issue is that journalism appeals to left-of-centre young people so there’s no need for any kind of controls. They’re self-selecting and already skewed, the govt doesn’t need to flex its muscles at all.

      I spoke to a contact who works in Media and asked him why they are avoiding the ‘Elephant in the Room’ re the Karel Sroubek affair?
      His answer?- “That’s more than my job’s worth”
      
      Now imagine (hypothetically) for one moment what the Media would have done had Sroubek been an associate of say…Max Key?
      
      Labour control the Media in this Country.
      Why do you think Curran was having secret meetings? It sure as hell wasn’t to encourage them to be ‘fair and impartial’…

        Durden makes a very good point. Parliamentary privelige was created for exactly this purpose…. to enable any MP to give voice to things within our parliament which would otherwise be too risky to say for fear of legal action. It’s one of the most basic founding principles of our democracy.
        
        Why the hell hasn’t the top been ripped off this stinking barrel of shit in our parliament? Please don’t tell me that, just as the Chinese have bought their way into both major parties, the drug cartels have done the same?

      As someone who has had a bit to do with “the media” over a fair number of years, the only thing that I found ever had much influence over them (print media at least) was the advertisers.
      Piss off the advertisers resulting in a decline in advertising revenue was sure to send your average editor into a real spin.
      Don’t see this happening at the moment because the CoL stuff ups cannot compete with the Jacinda effect.

    When I see these polls I am reminded of the US polls that had Hillary Clinton at 90% Plus certainty to become the US President.
    With maps and buttons they demonstrated on their fake news shows as to how Trump was a loser before starting.
    All the smooth talkers agreed with stars of TV and movies that Trump was goneburger..

      There were NO polls that said Clinton would win by 90% .
      The nationwide polls said she would win by 2% – which she did. trouble is the popular vote doesnt elect President , the electoral college does.
      
      The 90% was an ‘algorithm’ , not a poll , used by some analysts ( not pollsters) on who would win which states to get the 270 votes to win.
      With Clinton ahead in the polls the algorithm was skewed to her, but Trump won a few states with small margins ( below margin of error) and winner take all to become President.
      The electoral college is only roughly representative of the whole electorate as its skewed to small states with low populations ( they should take away the 2 votes per state added because they have 2 Senators each and just have it on numbers in Congress)

      An interesting aspect of poll rigging is the assumption the result benefits one party. In this case if the poll has been rigged or skewed and does not reflect accurate public opinion is that it has provided Jacinderella with more confidence, perhaps to go full Monty on the TWG CGT which will provide National with so much ammunition to blitz the COLL with. Simon missed a great opportunity to confirm that National would re instate the $200m to Pharmac when interviewed by Duncan Garnner on AM, instead he waffled which gives the impression National would not re instate. Its just this kind of response that leads to a public perception that Simon cannot be trusted to do what the public clearly want – so disappointing.

    I believe the media are to be congratulated in their decision to totally support Ardern over the last year and continuing.
    It is what they have always wanted despite what approximately half the voters want – but that is another story.
    Bradford said that despite what they all in the Press Gallery did it did not work.
    There is no doubt that the ladies particularly will continue to praise Ardern and condemn Bridges and National right up to the next election.
    I do not believe that the Peters Party is dead – they have the agreement with Ardern to keep her in power by donating a Labour electorate – up north.

    6% – no answer
    10% – didn’t know/undecided
    What difference might these 16% make in an election?

  Simon’s popularity rating is basically what the media wants it to be. And that will be the situation for most of 2019. Similarly the media could nosedive Jacinda’s popularity rating if it wants to.

      Simon Bridges is operating like the prosecutor he used to be, and is building a case. However, he is trying his case in the court of public opinion, and he needs to present his case with that in mind?

    In my mind, who leads the party is not relevant as it will be a policy vs policy election, at least I hope it will be.
    
    The media is flogging ardern the liar feelz to the max and also undermining Simon Bridges at every opportunity.
    
    Regardless of who the National leader is, the media will be running a campaign of destruction while pushing ardern the liar to the max.
    
    I believe policies will emerge from National the will start to capture the 16% “non committed” and when that starts, expect the wheels on the coalition to wobble.

        It might be worse now, but it has been there for a long time now. Muldoon had a personal following, Social Credit’s brief successes were largely on the back of Beetham’s personal appeal, Rowling didn’t inspire people much.
        Policy can be hard and confusing – personality politics much more accessible. Look at general public political blogs in NZ – how much time on KB (for example) is devoted to personal slights, insults, and conspiracy theories compared to policy analysis.

      The trouble with the policy over personality argument is labour went from low 20’s to almost 40% over night without any change in policy. They simply replaced Little with Ardern and suddenly they were in the hunt. Ironically it was then the National voters who wanted to have a Winston 1st influence on National that arguable led the way for the CoL we now have.
      
      Perhaps policy can become the more influential aspect of the next election and I hope it does but the Jacinda effect still seems to have its grasp firmly on a great deal of voters.

        Wait until the impact of the CGT hits home. Wait until many people find they will be caught not just the rick pricks but the middle pricks as well.
        
        Winston is between a rock and a hard place. If he supports the CGT bang goes the rest of his support oldies who are asset rich and cash poor with kids who own small businesses that will be taxed when they sell.
        
        His only hope is the free pass of a Labour seat and he has to win that first.
        
        If Winston doesn’t support the CGT it wont pass into legislation and Labour/Greens will cut him loose with no free seat and no 5% support.
        
        IMHO 2020 is all going to rest on tax. Its the hip pocket that decides who to tick in the polling booth.

      I don’t believe you understand how politics works with that statement. The ancient Greeks figured this out long ago. Facts (policies) count for nothing. Logic has a little effect but it is rhetoric that is king.
      
      Ultimately, it comes down to who can persuade the masses best. Sure, Bridges is handicapped with a Left-sympathetic media but other National politicians have succeeded.
      
      Simon Bridges needs to:
      1. Master rhetoric. He could take elocution lessons for example. He also needs to change his argument style in public; so that is appeals to audiences.
      
      2. Engage the masses. This has never been easier with the prevalence of social media. The “All sizzle, no sausage” is an example of this in play. Collins is quite witty on Twitter (and possibly why she is known in the preferred leader polls).
      
      3. Carefully court the controversial line. This is similar to the previous point but he needs to get known. The so-called “sexist” narrative of “All sizzle, no sausage” is an example of courting controversy. NPCs/SJWs are easy to trigger and as such will provide easy advertising. However, Bridges needs to be the one courting it. If nothing else, it will appeal to the masses if he’s prepared to “fight political correctness” head on. If the US poll is valid for NZ, only 8% of the people are for political correctness, so there is potentially a huge amount of fallowed ground in play.
      
      4. Be bold. Bridges needs to be firm in his convictions. Elocution lessons should help him appear bold.

        I agree, people have a PC facade but behind the scenes will roll their eyes at the SJW’s getting all upset at perceived discriminatory acts or being offended by anything that they want to blow out of context.
        
        A classic one is letting trans people compete in sport with the sex they weren’t born as. I think the majority would say that trans people can be trans if they want but a weightlifter born a man competing with women is just not right.
        
        Coming out and saying that would go ballistic from the media point of view but what % of the silent majority would think to themselves…. he’s right, a man without a wang is still a man when it comes to lifting weights..

        Twitter is nothing. Elocution is nothing (J Key has a pronounced accent, quite a pleasant one I thought; J Ardern has a shocker of an accent, somethink we all notice) and Soimon’s accent is, IMHO, not an issue.

        Twitter is not nothing. Trump has proved that it is a useful tool for bypassing the media to get his message out. I won’t say it’s the be-all and end-all but it is nonetheless a tool that can be used effectively.
        
        Elocution is actually extremely important and has nothing to do with accent of the general population. Ardern’s “shocker” style is memorable as was Key’s. Elocution is about “the skill of clear and expressive speech, especially of distinct pronunciation and articulation.” Say what you will about Ardern, but she ticks those boxes.
        
        I haven’t “whined about the polls or put interpretations on what the REAL numbers must be”. I’ve actually accepted the polls and have suggested ways of turning them around. I am concerned the “16%” mentioned on GD today is equivalent to the pre-2017 Left’s “missing million” whining OTOH.

        I’m not 100% convinced that a “fully explained” CGT will be poison. I think it could become a millstone around their necks, especially with carefully crafted rhetoric.
        
        Initially I thought “Winston has his Super sorted, do you?” was clever, but on further reflection I think it’s worthless. Why? Most people will think “Great, good on Winston for sorting his out”. It lacks the punch to illustrate that Winston has rorted the system to his advantage.
        
        I don’t know if “Simon is the man to lead at this time”. Right now, he lacks charisma or “fairy dust” as you pointed out. I’m suggesting ways he may develop that skill or at least the appearance of it.

    The MSM has become fixated on his personal rating, but I have never seen a ballot paper yet that asks for personal preference as PM.
    This becomes self-fulfilling.
    The MSM piles on Bridges, poll after poll, and thus the perception is created that he is useless and unpopular.
    I know there are plenty of Nats who think others could do a better job, but he has started the year fairly well.
    But I accept if the pile-on continues, MPs might get restless and opt for someone else.

      I changed my mind about Simon for the leader. Initially, I wanted Judith as leader but Simon has proved to have the goods. His elocution is a little difficult but he is articulate and intelligent. He can see the bigger picture with the economy and NZ. Hold firm Simon.         ….I agree Waikato girl…..Simon certainly does have the “goods” and can run rings around Ms Ed….he has serious “business” to discuss etc…..but needs to find some of that “silly fairy dust” that SLG spreads around the media with her “concerned frowny face” over matters like the insanitary motels etc….this is where she gets the people that don’t understand the bigger picture…..frowny concerned face and everyone thinks she is marvelous and yet she does nothing…..I think Simon should find some “people” stories of how the changes this government has wrought…. has badly affected them…..for instance in my line of work as a counselor ….with a background in psychology…..I meet people from all walks of life….I have not met one single person this year that is enamored of this Col…..just yesterday I had a client that I was sure would be left leaning…..on a benefit…..severely disabled child…..housing corp tenant etc…..she is disgusted ….whilst she got a small increase due to the WFF…..they took it back with a rent increase and she has ended up with less in her pocket……Simon needs more of these stories to go along with the more serious matters such as CGT and Pharmac etc…..as it is these personal stories that she gets the attention for….

      …..listening to Bridges in the house …..I think he is extremely capable as leader…..he is by far their best orator etc……my heart fell as this latest poll came out…..this man cannot get an even break with the MSM…..and I think it would be the same if they decided to replace him…..I am hoping that the Party will have the patience for the “long game” and leave Simon there….

      Last night when Pete George posted the figures for the poll he said 6% would not answer and 10% did not know/ undecided.
      I asked if the percentages given for each party are just the fraction of those who did answer. If that is correct then the poll results, as they have been reported for a number of years now are rubbish –the 16%, in this case, should be reported as part of the result.
      I can remember how, years ago, journalists like Soper used to zero in on the undecided figure like a hawk..

        I am sure some ( maybe a majority of the 16%) would vote for Labour, the Greens or NZF. All I am saying is the poll results reported should be more correct and reflect the answers of ALL those polled/questioned.

        The old make the statistics tell you what you want them to tell you. I personally know people who voted labour and are now frightfully embarrassed they did so and I also know traditional national voters who are fawning over Jacinda.
        
        I could well imagine there is a 16% swing given 35% actually voted for Labour last election and a good 2% or 3% of NZ1st voters were National enclosed voters. Are we to believe that Winston is bleeding voters to the left. Or is the stats more like 40% labour 38% National 16% undecided and the balance distributed between the rest.

    Listening to Bryce Edwards last night his key comment was that the Greens will also be uncomfortable on 6%. The only place for them to take support from is the hard left of the Labour party, so expect Labour to bleed some support as the Greens appeal to their core.
    
    However, what we need to see is National going after the late shipping woman of Auckland Central, Epsom and Tamaki too.

  If we actually had an honest media in this country they’d be exposing that very long list of Coalition failures and polling would actually be on a level playing field.

      I think we might be surprised. Agreed that the referendum will get some out to vote but on both sides, despite my views on media bias, they seem to be reporting adverse studies on marijuana.
      
      I imagine employers won’t vote for it, conservatives won’t vote for it, I assume there will be a legalisation v decriminalisation question.

        I have a relative who is a retired Psych Nurse and has seen the damage that Cannabis can do at first hand. Some would argue that this is no different to alcohol.
        
        I have also met a number of cannabis users, and for the most part, they are harmless. But heavy use can lead to psychiatric disorders, which I have seen.
        
        It just seems incongruous that while the left fall over themselves in trying to reduce alcohol harm, they seem intent to unleash this genie out of the bottle.

  To answer some of your points which look hopeful rather that enduring: last weeks poll according to many KB’s was a hiccup because of the Christmas break, a biased pollster and numerous other reasons which haven’t endured. The Greens bounced and I recall reading here many times that the Greens do better on election night than in the polls because of off shore votes. I also don’t think a falling party vote can be predicted as stable. The Sroubek ‘affair’ has been corrected, Kiwi Build looks a worse prospect and should be dropped. The col gets credit for not ripping into personal politics over the problems some National MPs have caused or experienced, no attack dogs. The tax policy proposed changes will become more moderate to get them over the line. The situation with China is a difficult one politically for the Nats and Labour, traditional allies, new allies, or independence to trade in a free market. Many associate high house prices with Chinese money and property purchase something ignored by the last Government. Any surge for Labour should have happened a year ago according to most here and be heading the other way by now, the fact the reverse has happened could indicate the support is solid.

  Whoever the leader is they will be hammered by the media. The caucus are in the arena and know this. A swap will not produce a different result, just portray an unsettled party that lacks unity. Leadership races tear parties apart. At present no obvious replacements exist. Judith has failed to more than a single vote in her two previous attempts, and that vote was hers. Mark is a good guy but the dog handler would struggle with the big job. Both Judith and Mitchell have been very close to Slater which would bother the majority of the caucus

    You raise some very valid points Annie. Whilst Collins as National leader would provide the media with plenty of fodder and entertainment, National’s poll numbers would suffer. That said, I have been impressed with the vigour with which she has held Twyford to account for Kiwibuild and transport issues, and it significant that it is she and not Nick Smith who is working on National’s policy for RMA reform. She’s certainly a pivotal member of Bridges’ front bench team.

This doesn’t relate to polling as no one watches the debates other than the hardcore. What is shown is cherry picked. As in overseas a couple of good debates can swing an election.

  I would have though the real “news” about last week’s TV3 and this week’s TV1 polls is that NZ First is yet again polling under the 5% threshold and I’m surprised the MSM isn’t making a big deal about it, asking why does NZF still have so much power in Govt when Labour are stilling polling into the 40’s and NZF is around 3%?
  
  I mean if it were a National/Act coalition Govt and ACT were polling as so badly imagine the MSM outcry, their constant commentary would be why does a minor party that is effectively dead with very little public support have so much control?
  
  Gee for the MSM it must be as hard as the Greens’ have it in terms of pretending the NZF elephant-in-the-room polling-disaster situation is not happening!

  1. Winston is a political Lazarus – he’ll be scheming. He’s also shrewd enough to wait for 2020 to campaign. He might struggle but never count him out.
  2. The Greens can distance themselves from Labour more easily than NZ First.
  3. Labour’s lack of talent will be more apparent this year when Ministers who screw up get away with it as there are no replacements available. This could kill Labour’s popularity.
  4. Labour’s CGT will be torpedoed by NZ1. If there is a CGT it will be so limited that few will be caught by it.
  
  I agree that 2020 will be National vs Labour. Bridges will remain, as historically opposition leaders only get traction in election campaigns. At the moment its JLR holding National back. Time to amputate the rotten limb from Parliament.

Following National MPs’ walkout from the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee last week, National MP David Carter in justification of the walkout said “It’s the government’s job to maintain a quorum and be organised. They called the meeting. They are expected to get out of bed and start at 8am.” See:

He and the other National MPs have got their priorities wrong. It was a narrow, inward looking action that signalled to me that the National Caucus is probably getting its priorities wrong in many other areas. I perceive this walkout as a potential vote loser. In what other areas is Caucus deciding to settle scores etc regardless of whether it could lose or win votes. This is where self control is necessary – they have to refrain from packing sads if it is not going to help meet the major objective of winning votes. The wider implication is if the Caucus is not totally focussed on winning support and votes, then why should Party members, volunteer and donors bother supporting the Party? Simon Bridges needs to deliver Caucus a pep talk on this.

List MP David Carter’s political career is in his twilight years and he may have been in the game so long that he is forgetting what it is all about. It seems the time has come to take a well earned retirement at the next election.

He is right in a sense, but he made no acknowledgement that 15 submitters had been unnecessarily inconvenienced. Hopefully National MP’s have apologised to the 15 submitters although I have not seen any such apology. I consider he and other National MP’s have got their priorities wrong over this. They wanted to teach the Labour MP’s a lesson but completely overlooked the wider implications. It seemed they just overlooked how voters, party members and party donors would feel about this. Some of the 15 submitters would be National supporters or potential supporters. Their future support may become lukewarm or non existent. Worse still they will go out and tell their friends and associates of their negative experience. The National MPs’ have also brassed off their supporters who are aware of this incident.

It isn’t good enough and it was right that they were shown up for their shoddy lack of respect and work ethic. They are meant to be running the country, not a cake stall.

      I’m not sure committees can work that way, in that the opposition can just take over and do what they want. Not to mention that usurping the system would reflect just as poorly.
      
      I think they followed the correct procedure, but have done poorly in explaining what that is and why it was important not to continue, and how many times the government members have been lees than punctual.

    It would all depend where the submitters’ sympathies lay. If they were Labour sympathisers, they would blame National MPs for collapsing the meeting. If National sympathisers, they would blame MPs from both sides (probably more so the National MPs).
    Some Labour oriented person suggested the probable reason for lateness was that Labour backbench MP’s had heavy Select Committee workloads and that is why they run late. However I doubt there would be as much sympathy if an aeroplane took off late because the pilots and cabin crew had a busy workload and slept in.

  I don’t think a country should be able to deny entry to one of its own citizens. She has almost certainly committed crimes in Syria. I’d recommend the UK ask the Syrians to charge her with those crimes and send her to a Syrian prison for a good long time, even if the UK have to pay for it. The child will not be a UK citizen so will have to remain in Syria and her family can go there and care for it if they wish or it can go to an orphanage.

Right of way is Way of Right

In the leadup to the last election, the labour Party realised that under Andrew Little, they were not going to get the traction they needed to compete at the polls. In a display of pragmatism, they took action. Look where they are now.

They took an uninspiring and awkward leader, and replaced him with a new face. Personally, I didn’t think she was up for the job, still don’t, but look who is sitting on the treasury benches.

Simon Bridges may be a very capable politician, and a very affable bloke, but, to be blunt, he comes across as a bit of a dick. He’s not the sort of leader that National needs right now, and he’s dragging the party down with him. Judith Collins might be polarising, but in a head to head with Taxcinda and Winston, I’d back her any day!

Politics is all about making the hard calls. National needs to make one now. Seriously, Simon Bridges makes Don Brash look good!

        Bullshit. I know plenty of women, including myself, who recognise the fact that any 16 year old can have a baby, and it doesn’t take any special talent at all.
        
        What is important (and what differentiates the average 16 year old mum from say, a 26 or 36 year old) is the ability to care and nurture for that child. I’m not sure how well Jacinda can do that if the baby is shipped off to babysitters every single day, most women are still on maternity leave for the first 12 months (longer if possible, as babies early years are so formative).

      No, it’s not just about a baby.
      I hear people frequently saying that they support Jacinda because she has provided a “breath of fresh air” to a dull, male dominated political scene.
      They say they trust her and agree that “things have to change”.
      Many women in particular, are prepared to wait a while for that societal change to happen – and they see Jacinda as their guiding light.
      Jacinda is a figure head who has captured a voter market – baby or no baby.

  I fully support Simon as leader but I am not a party member so my opinion makes no difference.
  
  Whoever is the leader, I would support as I look at policies not personalities.
  
  I fully accept that I am in the minority here but I just hope that more people will realise that this is not a pissing contest, it about who will make the right decisions for our country.

A bad poll for National again. Yes, it is after a good summer etc. But is that too rag JLR and his presence doing National collateral damage that is not need? Yes, in all likelihood Ross will be defeated in Botany next year, but does National need the twin risks of Ross the distraction for the next 18 months and losing a safe seat because of a split vote? As we have seen in the past two weeks the soft blue votes are soft, and although NZF is bleeding support, that support is going to the SLG and Labour.

Professor Jordan Peterson was able to speak to his audience last night without interference from Iris and her/his mates at Peace Action who claimed Jordan Peterson threatened our way of life in NZ. He spoke about the importance of a hierarchy for a society to function.
Nice to see there was no attempt to shut down his talk – guess they could not find a reason to do so.

I disagree with the “Bridges to be rolled’ story. It has been a media meme since day one. It is as if they feel they only need repeat it to make it true.
But that is the media.
Why is it people disregard the slanted partisan hackery of the media in every other regard, and yet, when the media flogs its fabricated narrative about Bridges, for some reason that is accepted as Gospel?
Toughen up people.

I saw Bridges speech to Parliament (ridiculed by Claire Trevett in the Herald) it was a blistering indictment of the Labour Party, Green and NZFist’s lamentable record so far.
Was it reported as such? Did it make it onto the evening news?
Of course not.
I would advise National to speak over the heads of the media as they recently did with ‘all sizzle, no sausage’.

Get a soap box stand on it and make ‘unscripted’ appearances to address current issues.
The only begrudging respect I ever had for Little was that he stuck in the job despite media ridicule. True he was ousted by Jacinda but consider this:
Winston Peters chose her as PM. If Andrew Little had stayed in pole position he would have been appointed by Winston too.
My point being that people respect conviction, and Andrew Little threw it all away – because ‘the polls said so’. Idiot.
Stick with Bridges. Don’t fold to the media’s mischief, speak directly to the voters.
It is the voters who should be running this country not the journalists.

    Simon – I am a card-carrying National Party member, who campaigned vigorously for both the party and our local candidate in 2017. I am glad that Bill English did not give ground to Peters, and believe, as I have stated here on many occasions that National dodged not so much a bullet but a thermo-nuclear missile.
    
    I would like Bridges to rule out any accommodation with NZF after the 2020 election. Bridges stated last week that National will make its position clear at the beginning of next year, which is fine by me.
    
    Peters claims he negotiated in good faith with both National and Labour. That’s patently bullshit. How can you negotiate “in good faith” with someone against whom you lodged legal documents the day before the election?

  Fully agree Lee C, Andrew Little (and the Labour Party hierarchy) panicked about his poll results, mainly because (like this week and last week) the MSM had about 2-3 polls within a week or so.
  
  If he stuck in there he potentially could have been PM Selected by the Poisoned Dwarf and at least NZ wouldn’t be the laughing stock that it is under Jacinda (plus I couldn’t see former EPMU head Little virtue signalling alongside beside the Greens destroying Taranaki’s oil and gas industry etc).
  
  Which goes to show, the MSM are up to it again with both TV stations polling within a week after each other. Who doesn’t think that TV1’s poll participants weren’t affected by last week’s TV3 poll results?

  Thanks Lee C again illustrated by the Media party targeting only that aspect of the latest poll as they continue their narrative. Unfortunately they struggled to get any traction from any National team member who had a mic in their face today. The consensus from them was any figure over 40% was fine at this stage while being eager to get on with their work. Good leadership is instrumental in getting results from the whole team with the ultimate target a team win as opposed to an individual star performance.
  Conversely the constant failures of the “stars” in the COL are building a fast growing list of team failures making it a challenge to find a single “win” on their score card. GCSB is assessing Spark’s proposal which includes Huawei’s participation and it has asked Spark to address some concerns about aspects of their proposal that touch on security. The media have misled the public, China has made threats against our interests and some National Party politicians have come out of the closet as China’s lickspittles as a consequence. Their is time for the worm to turn and you only have to look at Labours polling over the last six year the only time they were over 30% in the polls was leading into the month before a election or when David Shearer was the leader so it is still not that bigger problem yet especially when you have been polling in the 40% plus bracket for so long. Winston is bleeding votes ,so are the Greens and the female voter is firmly behind Jacinda and whether you like it or not it is the same trend as John Key. National need to make something stick to the Labour Leader to change people’s opinion and as long as the media carry on trying to crucify Simon Bridges and not hold the Coalition to account the harder it will get.

  This is how the MSM and left wing groups attempt to mislead the public. We know the size of the supposed “Russian” campaign to influence the US elections, they spent something like $100K in total and over half of that was after the election. The pushed “hot button” issues on both sides, promoting BLM for example.
  
  If you think a $100K spend in a campaign whee the losing side spent somewhere between $1-2B is the slightest bit consequential then you literally need your head read.
  
  Funnily enough there was a far more consequential and deliberately partisan campaign run in the Alabama special senate race after the election (Sessions resigned to become AG) and that was run by Democrat party interests who spent significant sums in the context of that campaign pushing false “Russian interests” that appeared to support the (losing) GOP candidate. That campaign could certainly do with some investigation as at least some of what was done was outside the election law – but as it benefited the Democrats the Guardian for one has no interest in pursuing it.
  
  What the small Russian effort in 2016 seems to have been aimed at doing was to encourage distrust between groupings in the US – to divide the people against one another. And thanks to their very willing assistants in the MSM and the left generally, they have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. There’s your Russian collusion.

A very interesting interview on Bolt last night with a man who became a woman for eight years and then returned to being a man. He said he eventually realised that his transgenderism was a mental disease so he read widely about the psychology of it. He firmly believes that it is biologically impossible to change genders and that most, if not all, transgender people need psychological treatment, not pandering to their desire to change sex. He believes that the deep seated cause of it is sexual abuse as a child, which happened to him, and that it is a subliminal desire to protect yourself from being abused that causes you to want to get rid of your sex organs. He now counsels people who want to change sex not to. Since reverting to his birth sex he got married to a woman and has been happily married for 21 years. To think that children are being encouraged to change sex, it’s a shocking state of affairs.

Newshub / Reid poll, if their integrity and honesty rate anything, have stated that they do not offer names with the question on Preferred Prime Minister, but rather ask “What Member would you prefer as Prime Minister?”
In their poll there was no mention of Winston Peters.

In yesterday evening’s TV1 / Colmar poll Winston was 3%
Why all the fuss over Simon Bridges rating of 6% when Winston is half that.

While Winston “bullied” Simon so much in Parliament last week over Simon’s poll result, that most media commented on it, Why did people or the media not ask what was Winston’s score – he is usually in the Preferred Prime Minister stakes too.

That is, Winston being the political leader who in fact selected the Government we have, decides apparently what our foreign policy is without consultation with Ardern, and cancels future gas exploration to get the Greens support to pass his paranoid waka-jumping law which does not even trump Standing Orders when it comes to mentally-ill members of Parliament like Jami-Lee Ross.

Why is the media not all over Winston?

I think having had two poll results in the last couple of weeks that a trend has emerged. The good news is that Peters party is on the rocks which is a delight to me.

The bad news is that National have & are continuing to lose ground. If we see a poll with National in the 30’s I predict a change of leader. At that point there will be no option.

Simon just doesn’t resonate with people, he may be a nice man I don’t know, but on that basis he is not right for the job. Unfortunately I see another term for Labour which will cause all sorts of damage

There’s been little debate in the transgression of democracy at the Canterbury Regional Council.

A Parliamentary bill will give two seats on the council to Ngai Tahu. This will apply when the council is returned to elected representatives in October.

Currently, Ngai Tahu nominates one of the seven unelected councillors. In submissions on the change back to elected members, the tribe asked for inclusion of three tribe-chosen, unelected councillors.

The appointed, rather than elected, present council has promoted the legislation that includes the inclusion of unelected Ngai Tahu councillors.

Electioneering Thai style

Thailand has a huge military. There is an aircraft carrier that is too expensive to put to sea, several submarines on order that are basically window dressing and a half million person army. There are army bases all over the countryside.
To the left is Myanmar, no threat, to the right Cambodia, no threat, to the north Laos, no threat.
One of the major parties campaigning for the upcoming election wants to cut the military budget by 10%. The Chief of the Army has thrown a wobbly and directed all the main TV channels to play patriotic music etc.
The other main party is led by the current junta PM and is stacked with generals.

My wife, who has always been reticent about expressing her views on Thai politics in case someone is listening at the keyhole – even in NZ, is giving me an earful every morning.
Still keeps quiet down at the temple, though.

  Perhaps Arden realises the USA is trying to boss NZ around and the GCSB advice has more to do with international politics than science.
  Simon Moutter, Spark’s chief said a little while back that the Brits were looking at Huawei 5G site equipment (as opposed to backbone equipment) and considered it could be properly audited for ‘backdoors’ etc. Now this seems to have been confirmed. So if Huawei is in the running again for site equipment, they will be very happy and that may help mend relationships with China. Heawei has acknowledged the concerns with backbone equipment (where auditing for ‘backdoors’ etc may be impossible) and therefore is not too fussed if NZ, UK etc declines to buy this equipment.

Vernon Tava made an interesting point on TV last night when discussing whether the electoral threshold should be lowered to 4%.
He said no new (de novo) political party had made it into Parliament. The ones that had were break-aways from existing parties.

While Labour has the 7 Maori seats firmly back in their generous grip, National will struggle to win the Government benches.

As Mana and the Maori Party are all but extinct, I think the 7 Maori Electorate MPs are sitting on a gold mine.

      Yup, I grew up in Mangere Bridge in the 70’s. Like anywhere there are good and bad pockets. Been many years since I was last there, but Kiwi Esplanade used to be VERY nice. Coronation Road was very much a dividing line – in general West = good, East = bad.

  I first saw them in big numbers coinciding with footy tournaments, but now they’re out all the time – permanently in fact.
  
  Seems a bit odd. It’s presumably to display some sort of pride in being Tongan. The obvious question is then; if the place is so fucken great then what are you doing here?

    It started with the rugby league World Cup and carried on when Tonga played Oz at Mt Smart last year.
    My son lives in Onehunga and a lot of houses around his way were decorated with Tongan flags and some Aussie ones. Still are.
    If you question why they are here you could ask the same thing of the Indians at the cricket or the kiwis at AB games in Australia or the poms that scoff bangers & mash at ye olde pubs all over the world.

Interesting piece of squirrel throwing by Taxcinda yesterday afternoon.

First the background:
This week, the CoL are due to release the TWG recommendations.

But before the release of the TWG recommendations, we get:

The CoL are considering a 2% turnover tax on multinationals earning revenue on transactions that originate in NZ. The estimate is the trade is $2.5bn annually and the tax will raise circa $80mill. The announcement was that govt want the IRD to produce an options paper and put it out for consultation in May.

The reasoning being:
1. The OECD has yet to come up with an agreed position on tax treatment for multinationals with operations in multiple jurisidications (chances of that happening are close to nil); and
2. In the interim other countries are looking at a turnover tax.

Given events and circumstances in NZ, yesterday’s announcement raises more questions about what is going on at the heart of our government than there are answers.

Questions I have:
1. Why, the announcement yesterday, was this a squirrel for what is coming later this week?
2. Who did this piece of work, surely it should have been within the remit of the TWG?
3. Who came up with the numbers?
Because apparently, 1% of New Zealand’s GDP is digital transactions of multinational companies – personally, I dont believe that statistic.
4. Is the government playing politics with the tax system, ie trying to appear tough on the big foreign multinationals for local consumption?
5. Is going unilateral the right move? Will this result on pressure being applied to NZ or local companies trading abroad?
6. What has happened to the OECD work on a tax regime for multinationals, is this lost or bogged down?

So, what is this about?

    There may be a PR campaign from IRD as a bit of softening up. I have encountered a flood of paper and emails. These are rare and occur when the govt is concerned about IRD/Public relations.
    
    IRD are indirectly announcing that all employees will have their incomes reported payday by payday so IRD will be more in control–automated refunds and bills. I suspect also that processing systems are a concern because they have intimated that they will not be able to accept negative numbers for adjustments. IRD may be again encountering severe stress.
    
    I’m sure IRD staff will be delighted to have to digest another 5cm of printed legislation to add to the present 20cm+ stack.

And now for a slight diversion.
My son just told me that he and his family tried to change doctors for one closer to where they live. They were told that no medical practices in Lower Hutt can accept new patients at the moment.
Funny that we had the same problem when we moved here in 2007, but this does not seem to have been an issue over the last ten years (until now).

Out fishing today & I accidentally dropped a plastic bag in the sea. Despite my best efforts to retrieve the object I was forced to watch it sink from sight.

No doubt a turtle or two are dining on it now & will die horrible deaths. I seek atonement.

Anyone know of any prayers or sacrifices to Gaia I can make to assuage my guilt? ?

  You can relax with a medical toke before preparing your paleodinner.
  Don’t forget to take your oestrogen drink before you retire.

  I was going into my local smkt and opened the boot to get some of my plastic bags, and the wind blew them away. I was unable to catch them.

    The interviewer seems to have repeated what Shipley said for the December article and popped her name on the completed article. Shipley hasn’t denied the accuracy of the reporting.
    
    The Herald explains:
    
    She was interviewed by the state-run newspaper in December for a feature article which has run already and was surprised to learn a new piece had been published under her name.
    
    Shipley has been on the NZ board of a Chinese bank, and has served as chair of ill-fated Mainzeal and as a director of Mainzeal’s owner, Chinese company Richina Pacific.
