One of our MP’s received an invitation to visit China last week. He was apparently treated like Royalty, travelling everywhere in impressive Government motorcades.

Strange that our MSM has not made even the vaguest mention of this visit – after all they are apparently focused on the inability of our PM to gain either an invitation or a visa to visit China.

But not so strange when you learn that the invitation was to the “wrong” side of the house – perhaps you noticed a front bench opposition member absent from the house last week. It seems the Chinese may be focused on “beyond 2020”.

      @ waikatogirl not his first visit there but no surprise as he will also be very aware of the potential impact on NZ/China trade when the USA conclude their new trade deal. Likewise the expanded deal being set with Vietnam not to mention what might eventuate with North Korea.
      Funny that old Winston First was in Fiji waiving a flag as they signed a new contract for roads there with China. Replacing the previous deal with a NZ company.

      The Chinese have been listening to her speeches and media interviews and, even with a team of fluent English speakers on the task, they simply can’t make out what she’s trying to say.

  Fantastic, Thank you so much, I wish it was in the local newspapers for all the faithful cindystardust friends to read about, they seem the only ones buying the papers these days. My God the list goes on and on and this is only 18 or so months in imagine if they survive the whole 3 year term what the list will be. Is anyone sure that the whole GST saga is not a coverup over the Karl S affair? That and the youth camp have gone quiet.

  There is a defect in this story. Mike Williams has never done a proper days work for anybody in his lifetime including Lime. Look at the guy, he’s not equipped to raise a sweat without the fear of a coronary. He did fruitlessly ferret around in MEL looking for dirt on John Key but that wasn’t work for him, more like a labour of love.

  Until this week we didn’t know that Labourite , champion of the poor , Mike Williams ,was working as a lobbyist for a multinational company that pays little or no tax in NZ and that has little or no concern for the safety of the users of its products or for other footpath users , many of whom are elderly and infirm.
  
  As to conflict of interest , Hosking is wrong . We’ve now had two very senior former Nat politicians convicted in the courts of law .
  
  All these matters need , as so many here are so fond of spouting , the sun light shone on ’em.
  
  BTW , Lime got the NZTA to change the rukes about what is a motor vehicle , so they could use the foot paths . That’s really fucking dodgy .

    Electric scooters below a certain wattage are and have always been allowed to be used on footpaths. Lime scooters comply with that and so do all of the other ones.
    
    So too do NZ Post’s Paxter vehicles, because they got an exemption.
    
    On the tax front, there’s no evidence that lime pays “little or no tax.” They are registered in NZ and accordingly pay GST and all other taxes as applicable.
    
    I assume if they make a profit in this financial year, they’ll pay 28% on that profit like everyone else.

  The amount of small business people that I have talked to about the CGT lately that have been utterly furious about the idea has been staggering. Nobody believes that it will go through but I remind them, look at the polls, it bloody well might. The only optimism I have is Cindy is actually a really terrible campaigner.

      I’m about to hit Gold so I get free entry to Koru. But I wouldn’t pay for it any longer. The food menu has not been changed for a decade. This could be improved at little cost. The Auckland domestic lounge is crowded and noisy. If they can’t get a bigger one, ban guests and kids at peak times. In fact ban kids under 12 at all times.
      
      If a full service airline came on to the Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch routes, they could hoover up business customers. That rap safety video was the final straw.

        My membership was up for renewal today. I am not renewing, it is simply not worth it. It used to be a peaceful place now it’s crammed to bursting and definitely not value for money. May as well find a quiet corner somewhere else or use the Strata lounge for a per use fee.

Capital Gains Tax and cultural usury –

While various media reports suggest Maori may be exempt a capital gains tax, the Tax Working Group “quotes” Maori tikanga principles as “A Pathway towards Wellbeing” – reasons why the rest of us, non-Maori, should pay the tax.

It may be that these Maori tikanga principles will also feature in the new “Wellbeing Budget” heralded by Ardern at the United Nations recently.

Meanwhile – … Labour is in an awkward position. On the one hand, they may say iwi should pay the tax like everyone else.
In doing so, they risk alienating factions of their own party and caucus who will feel strongly that Māori have a good argument for an exemption.

Is that not indeed “looking at the recommendations through a Māori lens?”

Kelvin Davis may be a little biased in this view – or just had a purpose different to Cullen’s – but a question could be: If Maori have the key, the Pathway towards Wellbeing, as suggested in the Tax Working Group’s blatant cultural appropriation above, why are they so much at the wrong end of all Government statistics, as indeed Kelvin Davis observes?

In highlighting the discrepancy between Maori tikanga aspirations and reality, Labour aren’t really solving anything, they are just emphasising the problem.

  Maori are citizens. Many would argue they get more than their share of the Tax Pie. They should contribute on the same basis as Whitey.

  Yvette – interesting comments about exempting Maori from capital gains tax. I can think of no measure more likely to encourage racial disharmony than saying some people have to pay tax because of their race and some people don’t have to pay tax because of their race. Measures like that is where you get rioting in the streets.
  
  Regarding Maori health and welfare around economic status, the Maori people need to look at themselves. We have all shared this country since 1840, it’s no good blaming others for the situation.

      Not many people would say that it is fair for Maoris running a business to not pay tax and people that are not Maori to pay a capital gains tax. That is extremely discriminatory.
      
      Imagine if it was the other way? Imagine if a government said that businesses will be exempt from a capital gains tax except for Maori businesses. Imagine what the reaction would be to that?
      
      It is no good for people with a bit more Maori ancestry to get tax breaks for the business while people who have a bit less Maori ancestry do not.

    Maori never sell their land, so they won’t be paying GST there. And there are hundreds, if not thousands of ‘owners’, none of whom can act for anyone else.
    Which brings me to a thought: Should I put the names of all my children, their children and their various in-laws and their children’s children and cousins on the title of my 6 acres?
    Maybe this multiple ownership of land idea could work –

I thought I would have a look at what a CGT would do to my KiwiSaver. So I applied a 33% tax to the capital gains over the past 3 years. I am in Aon Russell 50% Moderate Fund and 50% Balanced Fund. Average capital gains have been 12.3% pa.

So adjusted the opening and closing balances each year to take account of the CGT.

Guess what. After the 3 years my account was 8.96% down. And that’s only over 3 years. Now yes the past few years have been good both NZ and overseas bourses and some years will be losses and the TWG recommend they be offset against future gains.

But over 30 or 40 years the diminution of a fund is going to be Bigly as The Don would say.

Suggest other KBer do the same exercise and for the young ones scare the bejesus out of you.

      The Mainzeal-Shipley saga had its beginning when Richard Yan as a young man some how was able to leave Maoist China and come to New Zealand to study.
      
      His father had been head of Rotary in China, and you would think that would have had him torn apart by Mao’s mad Red students. The likely story, however, is that Yan senior was a long-time friend of Chou en-Lai, who unlike most of the Communist leaders, came from the Chinese aristocracy.
      
      In NZ, Yan was hosted by senior Auckland business people’s families, thanks to the Rotary connection. Then he finished his studies in America, where the Rotary connection again introduced friends, hosts, and contacts.
      
      Yan formed a company to invest in China, but one of its first activities was a sharemarket raid on Mair Astley, an old NZ agricultural company, big in wool, hides, leather and the like. Thanks to the Wild West takeover rules of the day, Yan and his new mates were able to grab Mair Astley in a way that would not be possible today.
      
      Richina, as the Yan-led company was called, bought the big State-owned tannery in Shanghai, supplying leather to the city that had become the world centre of shoe manufacturing.
      
      How Richina did not make a success of this is a puzzle.
      
      Mainzeal was one of the NZ companies Richina took over.
      
      Jenny Shipley was along for the ride, probably invited because, who, in an international company, wouldn’t want a former Prime Minister aboard.

      Nothing has happened in Taranaki…except your fear mongering. The oil and gas continues to flow, Fitzroy engineering continues on its Australian oil/gas work and doing steel work for large NZ commercial buildings.
      NZ oil/gas work was very small anyway …why ?because the explorers pulled out ages ago when the oil price slumped from 2014-5.

Sounds to me like Espiner has abandoned all pretense of being a journalist and has taken up full time the role of lead activist?

  If you read the whole article, it is actually highly critical of Labour and points out the political expediency that will inevitably undermine any claim that the CGT may have to fairness. He points out in the ultimate sentence that Labour has not lived up to its promises. Journalists always seem to be writing opinion pieces these days, but if your suggestion that this one was somehow pro-Labour, I would disagree.

    The capital gains tax is dead, killed not by National and the bullshit from property developers and landlords, but by Cullen confirming in the media that Maori land would likely be exempt.
    
    It’s bad enough having Ngai Tahu and Waikato Maori exempt from company tax thanks to their businesses being registered as charities. But a non-Maori only capital gains tax is untenable.
    
    A shame really. NZ is one of only of three countries in the 36 in the OECD without a capital gains tax, and it could have been a useful economic tool in stopping the country’s long slide down. It could have done this by redirecting capital and entrepreneurship away from property development.
    
    NZ is down to 48th in the world in GDP per capita, and 114th in the world in growth of GDP adjusted for inflation.
    
    Our decline is underlined by news today of a blow-out in the January trade deficit (it’s getting on for 50 years since our balance of payments have been out of the red).

        I think it was Roger Douglas who pointed out that NZ economy was actually based on internal ‘churn’ – the money went round and round, but very little new money was added to the pool.
        We needed to increase productivity, increase exports and earn more overseas funds.
        The trouble is, we still have plenty of people who churn, but the producers who want to export and earn overseas funds are feeling increasingly oppressed by the social climate being promoted by this government.

      I know the feeling – same as any parent/caregiver pays tax, so has less to spend on their family.

      Oh dear, Maori may take us to court. That won’t play well at Ratana or Waitangi. Best exempt them from our ‘fairness’ tax so only non-Maori pay. That seems fair.
      
      Cullen again…””I think the general non-Māori public needs to understand there are some special cases here and it’s not some particular special deal.”
      
      Right. I think we understand exactly what these special cases are that mean Maori, rich or otherwise, will not pay this tax.

        Marcw, this debate has been on for weeks, and this point has been repeated a number of times: most types of business make profit from revenue, but some make profit from rising asset value rather than revenue.
        
        At the moment cash-flow businesses carry disproportionate share of total taxation compared with those that depend on rising asset value.
        
        Varying tax types are tools for any government to use as it steers its economy. Most developed countries (33 out of 36 in the OECD) have capital gains tax.
        
        NZ doesn’t, and our economic performance is dismal. International comparisons of GDP growth net of inflation and of GDP per capita show the claim that NZ had a rock star economy was a lie and an illusion.
        
        The idea of the tax group was not to increase total tax take, but to change how it was made up.
        
        However, this is all now irrelevant, as the hints that any capital gains tax will NOT apply to Maori assets have torpedoed CGT.

  RNZ has become an echo chamber, FFS even Radio MagicTalk’s has more balance – their weekend show had Don Brash and a Leftie Feminist (sorry name escapes me) as panel guests last weekend and it was quite a good show to listen to. People understood a bit more of each other’s thinking and it wasn’t extreme, (not) surprisingly there was quite a bit of common sense middle-ground between them both when things were unpicked!

    I was forced to listen to Dickison the other day (car radio is a bastard that won’t pick up magic without me sticking my hand out the car and adding myself to the aerial)
    
    Always regarded him as a lefty, more centre than most, but left.
    
    Anyway he was getting a great many calls about CGT and his conclusion was that it simple wasn’t a fair tax, especially as so far small businesses were concerned.

  Huapai is rural Auckland – far out rural Auckland – and these clusters of apartments DO NOT even include an on-site parking space, letalone a carport or garage.
  
  At present cars and bicycles are the only way to get to Huapai, and when you get there you will have to hunt for somewhere to park.

    The other is a maori claiming an exemption because..well.. he’s a maori business so fuck off. He will have the edge in long term budgeting.
    
    When that same maori sells his business he has a higher net price, all things being equal…but they’re not equal are they?

Yesterday I read a few Australian opinion pieces about the Pell verdict. It seems conservatives, particularly Catholics, generally agree there’s been a terrible miscarriage of justice.
A couple of ex PMs, amongst others, have provided good character references, which are meaningless except to show Pell has fallen from a lofty height in their eyes.
Whatever all these people might have said was severely shaken when Pell’s lawyer, Robert Richter described Pell’s offences as a “plain vanilla sexual penetration case where the child is not actively participating.”

Further, its pretty unfair that the actual complainant has his identity suppressed, we aren’t allowed to know anything about him and he can waltz off into the sunset without the microscope being placed on him like has been for Pell.
      
      Even Pell’s enemies in the Vatican don’t think he did it. They just wanted him off the financial case he was on. And finally, its not like the Aussie cops and judiciary have ever been caught stitching someone up is it?

    Not sure which city you refer to, alloytoo, but it’s certainly the case in Christchurch, where kilometres of almost completely unused cycle lanes have totally messed up traffic flow all over the place.
    
    Lots of intersections have long cycle/pedestrian light phases on the left turn, whether there are cyclists/pedestrians present or not, followed by a teensy tiny car phase. Two, three or four cars at most. I’m watching motorists simply ignore the red arrow if there are no cyclists, and just go. I do it myself now. Otherwise if you’re a few cars back you have to wait two or more traffic light cycles to get around – without a single cyclist going by!

What does “too complex” mean?
