Shane Jones is counting Forestry’s commercial replanting in his goal to reach 1 billion trees in a decade.

Jones said the rate of commercial replanting over the next 10 years would have a “significant impact” on the 1b trees total.
“For example, if the recent 95 per cent replanting rate was maintained over the next decade, this would equate to 770m trees.”

There appears to be about a 5% difference between what Forestry harvests each year and what they re-plant.

If the replanting rate is 95%, as reported above, it means for the roughly 50 million trees Forestry fells each year, 47.5 million are re-planted.
That’s 2.5 million less per year.

Shane’s figures are as wonky as Twyford’s numbers on houses.

  Hang on – I was led to believe that Jones was crowing about 1 billion trees over and above the normal BAU occuring prior to this initiative.

        Make sure you take the side branches off to make them into a tree and then they will count, unlike some of the pine trees that the nephs will be too tired to delimb and thin as the trees grow.

    Forest Nursery Growers Association president Kevin Haine said its member nurseries would grow 100 million tree seedlings this year, almost double the 54m trees grown two years ago.

    So 54 million seedlings grown and presumably planted in 2016,
    before Shane was involved.
    If Forestry still re-plants about 50m, that is half of the 100 million tree seedlings to be grown this year.
    Which leaves Shane with 50m
    And that is 50m less than the 100m a year goal.
    
    And Shane can’t count Forestry’s 50m re-planting – because that is what it is: RE-planting, to RE-place the rough 50m they will chop down.
    Net difference, perhaps about 2.5 million.
    That’s what Forestry does, Shane – they re-plant trees where they have already chopped down roughly the same number. Excess of trees: about zilch.
    
    Shane’s figures are as wonky as Twyford’s numbers on houses.
    
    Shane’s Davy Crockett backwoodsman-come-politician orator act is becoming self-fulfilling.

  I suspect that after fires in recent days there will be considerably less overall tree numbers now in the Nelson district.
  
  On the other hand, vast swathes of land have now been cleared, and with minimal effort will be ready for planting in a month or so. Shame Jones had better start lining up his bro’s with their shovels – yeah right !

  Jones always made it clear that the 1 billion trees included commercial planting, which is about 50 million per year. I am pretty sure the commenters in this site actually know that since it has been said so many times.
  It has always seemed to me you shouldn’t just invent facts to suit ones own narrative. People see through it.
  So the issue is whether the govt will plant an additional 50 million this year on top of the commercial planting.

    As I recall Wayne, Liebour initially said they would plant 1B trees over 10 years, and there were no caveats. It was only after the election when people started pointing out this was going to be a mammoth task and that forestry already plants 50M a year that they prevaricated and started saying their numbers included what forestry were planting. We should be holding them to account for their original, pre-election promise.

    Vain Shane certainly never made it clear in all his huffing and puffing about the 1 billion that the annual 50 million would form half the eventual total. His chest swelled, his good eye and his index finger lifted towards Heaven, and he declaimed and decreed and boasted without ever once, in my recollection, mentioning the existing commercial contribution. It only started to be slipped furtively into his narrative when it became clear that the 1 billion was mere wishful thinking.

      Yeah I get the mocking, but there are wayvbetter targets than Shane and his trees. Kiwi build being the obvious, but also Willie Jackson.
      However Shane’s over the top rhetoric does attract as per the comments here.
      But I reckon by the end of three years he will probably have quite a lot to show in his portfolios. Unlike some others in government he has a solid business record and knows how to deliver.

        I think you underestimate our ability to mock the COL over many things at once. While Kiwibuild is a doozy, the PGF is getting close to that level of absurdity. I’m in no way convinced that Jones will have much to show for his efforts, even as a blatant vote bribe he’s proving a bit of a loser.

        Wayne, Jones’ over the top rhetoric, are you trying to be ironic with an understatement? This morning, yet again we get Jones telling us that someone he disagrees with is past it and should move on. In this instance it is the the Chairman of the Northland Regional Council.
        
        The circumstances was the ceremony for the sod turning for a roundabout south of Whangarei, that is estimated to cost the taxpayers $27mill from the PGF (how many permanent jobs will that create in Northland?). Anyhow Jones took a verbal swipe at the Chairman because he had the temerity to question the value of the roundabout in favour of a 4 lane highway to Auckland. Jones took a swipe at the Chairman saying he was out of touch with what people want. However, it is Jones running away with his mouth & it is him who is out of step with what the north wants, because last year ALL of Northland’s senior politicians went to Wellington to lobby Twyford for the 4 lane express way.
        
        So, may be it is Jones who should move on, because it is he who is out of step with what the people want?

Disappointing to hear former TVNZ news reader Peter Williams singing the praises of Michael ‘I’m going to get stuck into them’ Cullen for:

A: Paying down NZ’s debt and

B: Setting up Kiwisaver / Cullen Fund.

Can Mr Williams seriously be that vapid?

A: Cullen paid down debt by arse-pounding the long-suffering NZ taxpayer. That’s all he did. What a genius. I am more impressed with politicians who are able to grow the economy, not tax it to death. Instead of growing the NZ economy in the biggest global boom since WW2, Cullen’s government had it in recession before the GFC hit. Skills!

B: Kiwisaver – again all Cullen did was bribe NZers to save by using their own aforementioned Taxes as an ongoing incentive.
So: that’s low and middle income NZers who need to save, because they’re not saving any money, because Labour makes them impoverished in the first place. LOL.
Kiwisaver is not Government guaranteed, it is difficult to access your own savings if you really need it, and Cullen’s about to recommend taxing those funds AGAIN with his CGT.

However, in the interests of fairness, I have to admit that, in stark contrast to such mindless autocue readers as Simon Dallow, Hillary Barry, Susan Wood and Simon Shepherd, Peter Williams occasionally showed he had a brain and a conscience. On one memorable occasion in 2014, at the height of that year’s Gaza massacre, Peter Williams grimaced and looked very unhappy after reading out a piece of low propaganda that might have been written by someone at the Israeli consulate.

      I predict that Dowie will survive this, and the good folk of Invercargill will forgive her indiscretion. They will understand that Ross lured her into being his “Wellington wife”, and even though it takes two to tango, she will pull through this.       There are no bright lines on morality in the modern world. She has two avenues of redemption in the coming year. Firstly she can convince her electorate especially National members that she is worthy to continue being their MP after 2020. Secondly she can convince her leader, caucus and list selectors that she is worthy to retain her #17 position or similar and not be downgraded to an impossibly low position.
      Jami and MSM would dearly love Simon to ‘bite’ their bait on this business. Various statements have been made about some police investigation with vague assertions being treated as ‘fact’. They can be taken with a pinch of salt. Simon from his previous work experience would be quite capable of forming a view on what seems to be gong on and whether any charge (if it came to that) would fly. There are two possible charges that could be laid, a jury trial can be elected for either and a conviction for either means she is out of Parliament. In either case the prosecution would need to prove the charge ‘beyond reasonable doubt’.
      A reaction from Simon at the moment would play into Jami’s hands. Simon may already have his hand on the Whka Hopper lever ready to pull it at an appropriate time when he has his ducks in a row.

        I think he’s very wise to keep a low profile… not because Ardern is making a fool of herself, but because he is a rather insignificant little squirt with an extremely irritating speech defect and he puts people off rather than turning them on, frankly.
        
        Bridges is totally unsuited to be leading the ‘opposition’ to this pack of mongrels that is destroying our country. What National needs is a dynamic leader who stands for something and is capable of grabbing his listeners’ attention and inspiring them with a vision for a better New Zealand. So far this simply hasn’t happened.
        
        If you think this guy is playing a clever game of cat-and-mouse, then I suggest you think again. Also ask yourself which of Ardern & Co’s disastrous policies Bridges has pledged to reverse. Oil & Gas? Immigration? Refugees? Back-to-the-seventies union extortion? KiwiBuild? Drug dealer friends of the PM? PGF corruption and incompetence? Wholesale release of dangerous prisoners? Labour party sex camp? The list goes on and on and several commenters have listed them at length here in KB and good on them for doing so.
        
        The only definitive statement from Bridges that I can think of has been on the CGT – and even his opposition to that was weakly worded and delivered almost in undertones.
        
        Up to now the only real opposition to this quasi communist scum has come from blogs like this. But the MSM worm is now beginning to turn so hopefully the public will soon start to see through the teeth, the baybee, the serious frowny face and the sheer incompetence of this dangerous government.

      Jack5 totally agree that immigration is a huge issue dividing NZ first and Labour. Labour promised to cut back immigration. Reports are they have not cut back immigration at all. Indeed they are going the extra mile to bring in refugees from 3rd world countries that no one else wants!
      NZ first identity is built around restricting immigration and looking after NZers first.
      
      We do need a party or leader that will actually put NZ first and not try and replace us with hundreds of thousands of foreigners.
      
      I’m praying for a leader like that but if anyone has any other suggestions I’m sure we’d love to hear them ?

  If what Hooton writes is true, then are several things that can be read into matters:
  1. As it is early in the electoral cycle (not even halfway), NZF are reading the tea leaves as to the future of the CoL and are prepared to shoot the govt to save their own butts. Which says no party can trust going into govt with them;
  2. The mismanagement of the Economic Provincial Growth Fund means they will not buy a seat;
  3. If there is politics in killing an agreed govt initiative, politics wins. So, they are unreliable;
  4. They have had 16 months as part of the government and working relationships between ministers is happening via intermediaries? What of the next 20 months, is this what NZ and Kiwis deserve from our government?;
  5. If Peter’s & co are looking for a signal from National, a few come to mind, none polite and there is only one option for Bridges and that is to say “NO WAY”, & work to see Peters et al out of Parliament next year. National must remind voters at every opportunity that a vote for NZF is a vote for Labour;
  6. This early in the 2nd year of this parliament & hints of issues within the CoL, suggests the SLG & her mates will be dead men walking to the next election aka the Palmer govt. With 20 months to go, things can only get toxic;
  7. Expect the Greens to eat into Labour’s support base, making JA a bigger liability.
  
  This promises for the next 20 months to get interesting, and Peters only plan now needs to be securing his baubles for his retirement!

  Just read MH’s article, cripes there is so much in there that is incredibly interesting and worth commenting about (hopefully DPF will make a separate posting later for wider discussion etc).
  
  But my question is why is NZF so concerned about Labour (i.e. distancing themselves from them/not working closely with them)? Despite Labour’s high polling? Are NZF privy to information about Labour that eventually the MSM will start to report on that will be quite unfavorable?
  
  Or is it just a con job to attract more supporters, that they have been hemorrhaging after selling NZ out on the Oil and Gas ban, plastic shopping bag ban, and UN migration compact etc?
  
  If so, sorry NZF, you made your bed with Labour and the Greens on these issues and there is no way the public will forget NZF stood in solidarity with LabGreens to fuck over Kiwi’s prosperity (O&G ban/future higher cost imports hitting Kiwi’s pockets), being inconvenienced at every shop Kiwi’s shop at by having to either carry goods home in their hands, or pay more for non-degradable plastic bags and having the UN dictate Kiwi immigration policy. 🙁

  Labour cannot gift a seat to NZ First- it wouldn’t work. The only Labour held seat that NZ First Polls over 10% is the West Coast. West Coasters do not let anyone tell them what to do- and the party vote there is firmly National who should win it but have an F**** useless list MP.   I know quite a bit about Drever and his activities. Frankly, he should be sharing a cell with the likes of Karel Sroubek. He sold a package of bowling club land to a company owned by his aunt for around $300k, and on the same day, it was onsold to a property developer for $870k. His foray into the grocery trade was an absolute disaster, and creditors are tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket after the business went belly-up.

    Becuse there is no suitable site in NZ that is both close to the largest consumer (Auckland) and safe in the event of a malfunction.
    
    It’s a long story, but put simply the old NZED did a very thorough analysis of this around 1964 and concluded it simply wasn’t going to fly.

      Not quite true, Kaipara North Head is a suitable site to provide nuclear generation for the largest concentration of population in NZ. And with modern designs you can have designs that auto-shutdown in the event of a major failure.
      
      Kaipara would be vulnerable to a 100-150 metre Tsunami, but if something like that occurred then as bad as a nuclear accident could be I don’t think it would be a major concern after that wave rolls almost unimpeded through the Auckland Isthmus with just the higher Volcanic cones remaining above the surge.

        The problem wasn’t the tsunamis etc, but the consequences of a Chenobyll (sp?)-type failure and the dispersal of a radio-active cloud over either (perhaps both) Auckland and Northland (NZ’s most heavily poulated areas BTW) with Whangarei city being in a direct line for such an event if the wind was from the SW (Antarctic / Tasman Sea) and Auckland if the winds were from the NE (from the Pacific). It depended on the season.
        
        And should the winds change direction during such an event (not an unknown occurence)…
        
        The NZED carried out numerous tests and finally concluded it simply wasn’t worth it.

Because they have no connection with these communities, the “gypsies” are unaffected by the social norms, and feel free to do as they please.

Last evening I came into the room where out television is and looked and thought it must be the US Oscars.
But on further appraisal it was some woman in a state of total apoplexy not quite spitting but waving her arms around like Ardern does.
I thought she must be auditioning for a job with our Princess.
She was screaming like a demented harridan.
I hope she looks at the clip when she may be sober because if that is the best she can do she will not get the job or a Labour List seat.
What her husband (assuming she still has one) must think would be interesting. Understand he may be involved in the media so will be alright.

      The problem in 2020 is he will still be remembered as the poisoned chalice.
      
      While Key’s 2008 decision to exclude WinstonFirst was brilliant, it became obvious that it was a millstone for National in the 2017 election. I believe Key fundamentally resigned so that National could form government with WinstonFirst due to that 2008 decision; I think it was obvious from the outset that neither ACT nor Dunne were enough to cross the line.
      
      If Bridges does eliminate WinstonFirst as a coalition partner in 2020, it might come back to bite him in future elections. Unlike others, I’m not convinced this is Winston’s last hurrah. I believe he loves power and baubles far too much to ever willingly resign from parliament.

    Brett, I am in total agreement. There is only one electoral strategy for National for next year and it is as follows.
    
    1. Win 45 to 47% of the vote (including picking up circa 2% from NZF);
    2. Electoral annihilation of Peters & NZF. National must rule out doing business with Peters & NZF;
    3. Keep Seymour/ACT in Epsom;
    4. Let Labour & the Greens fight over the left of centre vote. Labour must not be allowed on to the centre ground.
    
    By a process of mathematics, the above will ensure a National government. So the next 12 months will be about cranking up the pressure on the CoL, particularly if their failures & problems become as apparent as they have while they are on holiday!

      While I’d love to be proven wrong and you correct, there are plenty of opportunities coming up for Peters to get up in the polls. For example, when Shaw brings his Zero Carbon Act into Parliament Peters can just say NZF wants nothing to do with it. He can say to the Greens that Bridges has already indicated bi-partisan support for it so they do need NZF. He can stand up on immigration (even if he was the front person on the UN agreement). etc. etc.

An illustration with Stuff’s report today implies Christchurch ratepayers should celebrate with a beer because instead of a 5.5 per cent rise in rates, they will be up 4.98 per cent. For a $500,000 home, the householder will pay an extra $131 rather than $145.

The council has been struggling with quake recovery but has been splashing out on things including a $100 million library building, and its organisation has become bloated.

The council is clinging to full ownership of assets that could be partly sold, and keeping the elite’s priorities served with street art and bike lanes.

    The new library is much grander and bigger than the central library damaged in the earthquake. If it was of similar proportions, surely insurance would have covered most of the cost.
    
    No doubt, the new central library is a splendid building for a city the size of Christchurch. But the city isn’t yet fully on its feet after earthquake, and rates inflicted on home owners are soaring.
    
    Reports of costs have varied, but the latest I noticed was $85 million. Given the council’s reluctance to release the cost of the library’s $1 million-plus wall it’s not unreasonable to be sceptical about the declared total cost of the libary.
    
    Christchurch has a successful spoke and hub library service, with good use of suburban libraries with books being moved between libraries and a central book store. The central library seemed to be evolving into a resource facility.
    
    The new building is five storeys, and is 9850 square metres. Here’s a preview that was printed on Stuff before it was opened:
    
    ”A light-filled central atrium would lead people up through the different levels of the library. The first floor, with its extended height, would be one of the most impressive spaces within the library and would house a 200-seat community arena, exhibition space, and areas for families, children and youth.”
    
    The library employs 180 people, with 45 new assistants hired. I have no beef with rates money being spent on books, and on librarians’ salaries, but that doesn’t justify the scale of the new library building.

I see in today’s NZ Herald, that there is a concerning article on Venezuela “Venezuela blocks aid from entering from Colombian border” which details the socialist Venezuelan government’s effort to block desperately needed humanitarian aid entering the country.

In addition to detailing recent developments taking place there the article also covers some well worn ground in describing the economic crisis in Venezuela as well as attributing a cause but at no time does the word socialist, or socialism appear and neither is the blame for the current crisis in Venezuela attributed to the well known socialist policies of the Maduro government.

Why has the NZ Herald not allowed any use of the word socialism or socialist in this article?

Why has the paper not allowed any linkage between socialism and the current failings of Venezuela’s economy and the misery of its people as being the cause?

Why is the NZHerald protecting the reputation of socialism over its role in the Venezuelan crisis?

Why is the Herald not allowing any criticism of socilasim at all in this article?

    Don’t be asinine. The Moriori were a Maori tribe (or more likely the remnants of a tribe) who fled persecution and ended up at the Chathams where they were able to settle. As a result of their formative experience they adopted some significantly different cultural norms. The DNA that we have makes that pretty clear.
    
    As for the red-headed people, there are similar myths across Polynesia including Easter Island so it is older than the settlement of NZ and probably just remembered historical mythology from some time back. There’s no real evidence of any such human inhabitants in NZ before the Maori arrived in the 12-13th century. Not that we might not find evidence at some point, but nothing of consequence exists now.

    Apart from the heat-loving kumara, the Maori didn’t have any other sources of carbohydrate (bracken fern is very hard to process). As a result, they depended on fats and proteins for their energy (like the Eskimo).
    If the Maori obtained the kumara from South America, pity they didn’t obtain the cooler-climate-tolerant potatoe. If they had, then the Maori population might have been higher.

        I’d go along with that T1845. Maori in WW2 were brave fighters but the Geneva Conventions didn’t seem to bother them greatly.
        
        Most of the returned NZ servicemen didn’t talk much about what they had seen but I was privileged to know two who had fought in the Italian campaign, particularly Cassino.
        
        Neither knew the other but both spoke of Germans taken prisoner by Maori as having a poor life expectancy. Many were “escorted” back towards HQ as prisoners but few reached there to attain PoW status.
        
        One old soldier thought it a good idea, the other considered it barbaric yet the height of battle is never a good time to make judgements.

        Thanks Nasska. Yes, there is always an interesting debate between ‘heat of the battle’ incidents and cold-blooded murder. One of the incidents I referred to, at San Silvestro in Italy, involved the German POWs being crucified with their own bayonets.
        
        What is also interesting is that Maori in other units (and there were more of them than fought in the MB) didn’t get into trouble as often as the MB lads did.
        
        The Official History of HQ 2NZEF records that soldiers from the Maori Battalion committed about half of 2 Div’s disciplinary breaches during WW2 — despite the fact that the MB comprised less than 4% of the Division’s total personnel.

Last November, the Catholic Church’s global organisation for nuns denounced the “culture of silence and secrecy” that prevented them from speaking out. The Pope’s comments come amid long-running cases of sexual abuse of children and young men by priests at the Church. …

The female congregation dissolved in 2005 under Pope Benedict was the Community of St Jean, which was based in France, Alessandro Gisotti of the Vatican press office told CBS News. In 2013, the Community of St Jean admitted that priests had behaved “in ways that went against chastity” with several women in the order, according to the French Roman Catholic newspaper La Croix.

In a separate case in India last year, a bishop was arrested over allegations that he raped a nun 13 times between 2014 and 2016. Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who headed the diocese in Jalandhar in the northern state of Punjab, has denied the accusations.

In Chile, reports of abuse of nuns carried out by priests led the Vatican to launch an investigation last year. The women were reportedly removed from the order after highlighting the abuse.

    I went to a talk by a Hamish Campbell at Kawhia after there had been an International geology Symposium in Napier I think it was. he theorised that when Lake Taupo erupted that it was able to be seen from a very long way away and that Maori possibly? came and investigated the long white cloud?
    I am very sure that he said that there were no signs of human activity prior to the eruption, so far discovered I guess, as science is forever discovering.

Czech drug smuggler Karel Sroubek has now obtained a passport in his real identity – that could see him try to apply for residency again.

However, the significance of the travel document depends on the outcome of Sroubek’s appeal to the Immigration Protection Tribunal (IPT).

It is unclear what grounds Sroubek, who is an excluded person and subject to deportation liability, is appealing.
