      Just for the record, I agree that climate change is a serous problem. I recognise that I am in a minority amongst regular commentators here. However I do not insult them. They hold a different view.
      
      What annoys me is that “action” to reduce greenhouse emissions is frequently ruinously expensive and misdirected. The recent decision to ban offshore oil and gas exploration being an excellent example. All that does is impoverish New Zealand and deprive us of about 30 billion dollars, much of which could be devoted to adaptation. Poor countries cannot adapt.
      
      And when the striking kids today pledge, seriously, to stop being driven to school in large petrol powered vehicles, well I will applaud and respect them. That is happening right?

        Srylands, what exactly do you mean by climate change, if it’s the weather, well this summer was the same as it was when I was a kid. We have weather patterns which are just that – repetitive patterns over the centuries. I’m sorry but I just don’t buy “Climate Change”. I get the pollution which has improved a lot in some areas, but not in others, but climate change a big NO from me.

        I’m also of the view that the climate is changing and that man has a part to play in it – how much is debatable of course. So you’re not alone.
        
        Buuuut… I don’t care and I’ll never care. We are a fantastic species and we will overcome any obstacles that come our way.
        
        For example the CC alarmists are quick enough to tell us how much land we’ll lose to rising sea-levels but very, very slow to tell us about the marginal land that will similarly become habitable as the same time.

        I’ve never found this a compelling argument. It’s rather like a young smoker dismissing its risk because we’ll have a cure for cancer by the time it is a problem for them (and forty years ago, I knew fellow smokers [at the time] who would say things like that).
        If significant climate change does occur, then humanity may well survive, but things would, I think, get very ugly.

        The history of humanity is mainly ugly with a very brief (current) relative period of niceness.
        
        As for the smoking. So what? That’s a personal (and informed) choice – does anyone now think it’s harmless? Of course they don’t, so if you really do want to use that as an analogy then those that are successful (eg the non-smokers in your argument) will adapt using their abilities and assets to overcome the challenges.
        
        Again, simply stated I don’t care. Mankind will survive, some people will die, but then they were going to die anyway (BTW, those smokers were also going to die and if you want to use statistics rather than emotive headlines, doing away with smoking won’t save a single life or reduce the annual number of deaths). I’ll choose my comfortable, modern, civilised and massively extended (by historic standards) life thanks.

        Sure, I understand you don’t care, and humanity may well weather it in some way or another if it eventuates. I can also understand that others are concerned for what it might mean for their children and grandchildren. People have different focuses.
        
        Smoking, informed choice – not sure that’s my point. I find the “she’ll be right”, “technology will protect us”, “we’ve got big brains” arguments a little facile. But that’s just me.

        Ultimately, me and mine will be OK, and that’s really what matters to me. Sorry and all that but I really don’t give a flying fuck about some islanders who really should have moved on from their marginal subsistence-level way of life and not been subsidised to remain as some quaint cultural relic for the aesthetic benefit of do-gooding white people.

        Hard to say – if there are effects of climate change on our civilisation, then I would guess it’s the less direct ones that are likely to cause a quicker impact. For example, a lot of the world’s food is produced in a latitude band in the northern hemisphere. If that was seriously disrupted how would countries (e.g., China, USA, Europe) react? Would it be the sort of thing countries would go to war over?
        I’m just thinking out loud as much as anything. I’d like to think you were right about change being slow, but events easily cascade.

      The use of children to score political points pisses me off. As a society we recognise that children are not equipped to make political decisions so we don’t let them vote. So why do these teachers think it is appropriate to take their kids on political protest marches.
      
      Are the kids given a chance to form their own opinions on the matter? Are the ones who decide they are skeptics allowed to sit the protest out? Of course not because the notion that a primary school child might consider the evidence and decide that they are a climate skeptic is absurd. They don’t know enough to evaluate the evidence and form their own opinions and at that age they’ll believe anything their teachers tell them. That is precisely why we don’t let the little buggers vote.
      
      This is political indoctrination and child abuse. Keep politics out of school, especially primary school and kindergarten.

  I heard Cindy is off to Taranaki. She left her visit long enough for the anger of those whose life has been turned upside down to cool down, after she cancelled the oil and gas industry. I hope Cindy has some real answers to their questions or is it just the airy fairy platitudes about green energy projects that are still to be thought of.   As someone who comes from Taranaki I must protest! Our Prime Minister in a captain’s call decided to end future oil and gas exploration without consultation with anyone.
  The coalition partners the greens are hostile to dairy farming –

    Calendar girl – those are excellent questions! One of the problems we have is that we have such a compliant left-wing media that basically upticks everything that the left-wing Labour Party and Greens party wants to do.
    
    Given such a major decision there should have been outrage in the media. But basically most of the left-wing types that are journalist nowadays believe in the same kind of things. So they see climate change as such an existential threat that closing down oil and gas exploration is a small price to pay. So they basically go along with it.
    
    Whereas when the National party dips their toe in the water and opens a few charter schools then there is outrage from the media. The charter schools are always labelled as “controversial” by the media. And when labour gets into power and immediately shuts down those very successful charter schools well no problem. Because the media mainly agrees with this.
    
    We need a disruptor who will come in and pursue sensible centre-right policies and hit back at the media as hard as they hit him or her. I believe it is working in another country that is well known to us? 🙂

  Casual observation from behind the wheel of a petrol-driven motor vehicle in the central Waikato, indicates that while there are quite a few non-uniform wearing ‘teenage’ females roaming the streets, there are very, very few males of that age bracket doing the same.

    Whaleoil is at it again this morning – “Is Simon facing a ‘Come to Jusus’ moment” – by some writer called Suze – probably using a feed from Simon Lusk.
    The line being taken is Simon is facing a SFO investigation despite by all accounts that Simon has no involvement with the donations business. It would be too inconvenient if writers admitted that the buck stops at the Party’s General Manager’s desk, not the leaders desk. Anyway the sole source of what is happening seems to be from Jami’s mouth so the impression of what is going on may be different from the hard facts.
    I doubt that Simon could be rolled over this – he is the one who could be calling for other heads to roll.

    Seriously, I happened to be driving past Queen Margaret College at 0830 one day this week. It was a chaotic scene of dozens of high end SUVs disgorging children. I know parents who take turns leaving work at 3pm to pick up the kids, take them home, and then come back to work. No wonder we have traffic issues.
    
    That’s why I am contemptuous of efforts to fix transport problems by encouraging cycling and walking. These parents are addicted to large petrol powered vehicles. And so are their kids. These very same kids who will today “strike” for action on climate change, fauned over by the media.

  It would be interesting ask the girl if she knew that when her grandparents (and in some cases her parents generation) went to school most schools had huge bike sheds and each kid had their designated bike rack.   Depends what you value in the garden.
  
  I’d keep the tiger slugs if you have lots of smaller grey and brown garden slugs (Derocerus), as the tiger slugs will chomp on these.
  
  However if you’ve got lots of seedlings, leafy greens in your garden, then it might pay to clean out the Tiger slugs along with the smaller ones.
  
  (I don’t think I’d enjoy encountering an 8 inch/ 20cm- long Tiger slug)

    Yes but we need to agree on the findings first and only allow review by those who already agree with the findings. Otherwise how will we get a consensus?
    
    Climate science is very structured. You first determine what the finding is, then build a hypothesis to support it. Except its called a fact and not an hypothesis, in this arena of science. Debate is limited to screaming DENIER!!! in peoples faces.
    
    It’s really pretty simple once you get the hang of it and the money is outstanding. No scratching around begging for grants and a place to work.

We saw this when our Parliament refused the will of 92% in the anti smacking issue.

But the UK situation is much worse. Democracy in the UK is now dead. It has been on its deathbed for some decades as bit by bit the Elites have taken back the democratic rights of the citizens.

We will see the same in NZ unless enough of us stand up and fight for the democratic rights that our forebears went to war and died for.

Free speech is under attack by the Left. The right to hold an opinion that differs from the Ruling Elite is under attack.

It will get worse unless KBer individually and collectively stand against the Left and defeat them.

    This law change fixes up a silly error. Imagine if a very wealthy horse breeder and Rangitoto went 90% 10% in a yearling colt. The extremely wealthy horse breeder could claim 75% depreciation on his 90% of the horse, but Rangitoto could not claim any depreciation on his 10% because he had not been a horse breeder. If you cannot understand that then don’t worry. Nathan Guy couldn’t either and John Key so hated the horse racing fraternity he foisted that waste of space upon them as the Minister of Racing. Give some marks to Winnie; he has had that silly error fixed up, much to the concern of Inland Revenue Department head office wallahs, who had been very unco-operative on this matter over the past 10 years.

The must be a way to get rid of incompetent judges.

Dear Solicitor General

I wrote to you by email on 28 Jan 2019 requesting an appeal of sentence of Grant Hannis to be considered. I did not receive a reply and the sentence was not appealed. The judge believed it was an isolated incident from an otherwise blameless man. It turned out afterwards that there had been another complainant from the rest home.

I hope I am not wasting my time with this latest complaint. The link in the case I refer to is below.

Regarding the attack on James Shaw yesterday, there were a lot of people in the thread calling for more protection of ministers to avoid this sort of carry on.
I disagree. Ministers should be made to live among the fruit their policies bear. If that means they’re belted by idiots because their policies make the country a less safe place, so be it.

While I am on the subject, any politician that goes to Waitangi to appease the special peoples know what they are letting themselves in for. There should be no special protection for any minister that puts him/herself in dangers way.

  It seems an assumption is being made that this was a politically motivated attack. I have no idea, but I doubt it. Lots of people, who are not politicians, get punched on a daily basis. Statistically it is highly unlikely this was about politics.

The Lime scooter classification affair is putting the heat on Mike Williams, former Labour Party president (from 2000 to 2009) and campaign manager. He has also been a political commentator on Radio NZ’s Red Radio.

Lime has admitted it hired Williams as a consultant in Lime’s campaign to have the the NZ Transport Agency re-classify the electric scooters as non motor-vehicles ahead of their launch in Auckland and Christchurch. Williams is a former director of the agency.

Just a couple of general comments on articles like this which I think are relevant.
1.They keep referring to the attack as unprovoked as though it would really be anything else.
I mean did Steven Joyce provoke his attacker, did Nick Smith provoke his attacker and so on unless you subscribe to the twisted point of view that just being a politician qualifies you for being attacked.
2.The article goes on to quote former MP Sue Bradford and her opinions on what needs to be done security wise and the like.
Well excuse me for raining on your parade but this is the same Sue Bradford who came out in defence of the Green Party guy caught vandalising opposition politicians billboards by saying as far as she is concerned it is a legitimate form of protest.
Well yes vandalising billboards and assault are two different things but ultimately they all feed into the same thing which is lawlessness and the feeling you are justified in doing whatever you are going to do because you are right and they deserved it.
So maybe time for some reflection now Sue that in your own little way you are part of the problem that we are seeing manifest itself at present.

Can someone help me. I hear this morning much angst over the abuse of children in State care. What I want to know is why the organisation (Orangi Tamariki) is carrying the blame and not the care-givers who actually had the kids in their care? Has any care-giver been prosecuted? If what I hear is correct, most of the abuse is surely a criminal offence.
Once again ‘the State’ is being hammered for things that are actually personal responsibility.

Many have commented here on various occasions that our police, justice and corrections processes will not improve until politicians and judges etc are forced to live with the same realities that members of the public experience in terms of personal, familial and property security.
I am inclined to agree.

But the attack on Shaw was not the same.
It wasn’t ‘just crime’ as experienced by ordinary New Zealanders all too frequently, it was a targetted political attack involving violence.
As such it was disgusting, and will do nothing to clarify the thinking of decision-makers.

  Note the weird (but no doubt deliberate) use of language “a crack in path caught wheel”. In this sentence, the path’s role is active, and his role is passive. It must the path’s fault, and therefore someone else’s fault; he is a passive victim.
  
  What they should have said, by all rules of language and integrity: “his wheel caught a crack in the path”. His wheel is now active, the path is passive (as an inanimate object should be). There may be problems with the way the path was laid, but his actions (riding a bike) led to the accident (and it may have been avoided by different actions e.g. taking care where he steered, watching where he was going, choosing a different angle of approach).

Part of me wishes that the Government would take decisive action to reduce carbon emissions. Because it would actually show the dreamers what it would take. We could probably reduce emissions materially. A carbon tax to take petrol to $4.00. (Sorry kids. Walk to school. But you wanted action, right?). Quickly move to 100 percent renewables electricity. Sure some days there will be no power. Put another jumper on.

Btw I liked the fleet of diesel buses that was waiting to take the kids back to school for the afternoon.

I have never really believed in re-incarnation. The prospect that one might well return as a dung beetle or some other equally inauspicious being is not really one to which I aspire. Mind you, I have come across people who clearly started as dung beetles but some how morphed into human form —or partially so.o
This week, I have had cause to reconsider.
I read somewhere that in the early 1800s, Collingwood was considered as a potential capital of NZ. The colonising luminaries at the time designated a wandering neanderthal to be the official traffic engineer for Collingwood and locked kim in a dungeon with a map and quill and told him to prepare a street plan for Collingwood. So, he did. Some of the streets, I am told, involved near vertical graddient and others were equally impassable.
It was, in short, a complete disaster.

I mention it because it seems that said traffic engineer has been re-incarnated as, believe it or not, a traffic engineer. AND he has been let loose on Wanaka [very likely working from the same dungeon in UK].
Why would anyone ever direct the flow of traffic so that the queue to enter a roundabout at one end of an arterial road starts beyond the other end. It takes maybe 10-15 minutes to walk the length of Brownston Street. It now takes up to 15-20 minutes to drive it.
The only other explanation is that QLDC has engaged a traffic engineer from Auckland and that person has become so homesick as to set about duplicating Auckland’s traffic congestion in Wanaka.

An appalling rape – of a woman in hospital recovering from surgery.

The rapist, in addition to prison got “a warning under the three strikes legislation.”

In case, like me, you don’t know the detail of the three strikes legislation, this is from the Justice Department web site:

A first warning is issued when an offender aged 18 or over at the time of a qualifying offence, and who does not have any previous warnings, is convicted of that offence. Once an offender has received a first ‘strike’ warning, it stays on their record for good unless their conviction is overturned.

If that offender is subsequently convicted of another qualifying offence they receive a final warning and, if sentenced to imprisonment, will serve that sentence in full without the possibility of parole. The first and final warnings will stay on the offender’s record.

On conviction of a third qualifying offence the court must impose the maximum penalty for the offence. The court must also order that the sentence be served without parole, unless the court considers that would be manifestly unjust.

Europe leaning Right?

The European Parliament president, Italian Antonio Tajani, has apologised after defending Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, and saying the dictator did some “positive things”.

Tajani, in his apology, said the remarks were “in no way intended to justify or minimise an anti-democratic and totalitarian regime.”

Tajani said earlier that Mussolini had done some “positive things” such as building roads and bridges before imprisoning political opponents, implementing draconian discrimination laws against Italian Jews, allying with Hitler and plunging Italy into war.

“You don’t have to agree with his methods… but let’s be honest, Mussolini built roads, bridges, buildings, sports installations, he remade many parts of our Italy,” he said during a radio interview.

“Generally speaking I don’t think his government action was positive. But things were done,” he added.

    The Article 50 extension can only occur if all 27 EU countries agree to it. The EU elite have already said they will not agree to an extension unless there is a plan in place from the UK. May’s plan has already been voted out so there is no plan. Will the EU elite allow themselves to effectively lose face by changing their mind?
    The exit on 29 March is part of UK law –can you see them getting their act together in the 14 days to change the law in time?
